Music Reviews Eric Church
Album: Mr. Misunderstood Release Date: November 6, 2015
By Jordyn Smith
Eric Church, country music’s favorite rebel, unexpectedly dropped “Mr. Misunderstood” after the CMA awards on November 4. The album shocked many, and it takes a step away from Church’s previous release – hard-rocking album “The Outsiders” – and shows a different side of the artist. This is most shown in “Three Year Old,” a song about his son Boone. It’s a touching song that tugs at the heart strings. The title track kicks off the album, a true rebel-anthem that shows the progression of Church. The album is full of tracks that stand out, from “Knives of New Orleans,” to “Round Here Buzz,” to “Mixed Drinks About Feelings,” Church is not afraid to cover any topic. The album, produced by Jay Joyce, pushes the limits. It also opens Church up in a way that fans won’t be used to. Each song has meticulous detail, from the careful instrumentals to the powerful back-up vocals of Joanna Cotten. This album was a great surprise for fans of country music and of Eric Church.
Sam Smith has released “In the Lonely Hour (Drowning Shadows Edition),” a 23-track album that features John Legend, Naughty Boy, and Mary J. Blige. Smith showcases his talent on each track and puts his heart and soul into this album. For those who have never listened to Smith, now is the time. The album shows why he is rising to superstardom. He mixes in up-beat tracks like “Money on My Mind,” “Like I Can,” and “Restart” with ballads like the hit “Stay With Me.” In many of the tracks, Smith brings out some serious soul. Included on the album are two collaborations with Mary J. Blige in a rendition of “Stay With Me” and John Legend in “Lay Me Down.” This is a great pickup for any pop fan.
Seal is back with “7.” The incredibly talented singer has released the 11-track album that showcases who he is as an artist. The soul he puts into this album is unreal. His great vocals, paired with the accompaniment of the music, make this album stand out. There are a few tracks that will make you want to turn the volume up to 11. The club-sounding anthem of “Life On the Dancefloor” will make you dancing as intended. With the more up-beat tracks, he does bring a new flavor of soul with “The Big Love Has Died” and “Do You Ever.” These tracks really help balance the album. For this release, he reunited with the famous producer Trevor Horn – the mastermind behind hits like “Crazy” and “Kiss From A Rose.”
Billy Gibbons, best known for his involvement in ZZ Top, has released his solo album “Perfecatmundo.” The 11-track rock album is a gritty, funky, rocking album that brings a new mix into the modern rock genre – including some heavy rock riffs there are unmistakable attributes from older classic rock. The piano in “Treat Her Right” brings a new element to the track. The funky feel to “You’re What’s Happenin’, Baby” brings balance to the album. Each track is expertly crafted. “Sal Y Pimiento” is a fun, hook-filled track with a Latin vibe to it that he continues to showcase throughout “Hombre Sin Nombre,” Quiero Mas Dinero,” “Piedras Negras,” and the title-track “Perfectamundo.” It may not be “La Grange” or “Tush” but ZZ Top fans will be impressed.

FUN WITH FALL FOLIAGE
By Adrianna Zampieri
With the temperature cooling down and the leaves beginning to change color, fall is finally in the air. It brings to mind apple picking, hay bale climbing, and giant piles of leaves – but leaves aren’t just for jumping in. Here are a few leaf-décor tutorials to jumpstart your fall decorating in time for Thanksgiving. PRESERVING LEAVES Leaves are transforming into the brightest of colors right before your eyes: burgundy reds, amber oranges, and even dark purples. Here’s a simple trick you can do to preserve these vibrant bits of nature and use them in decorating. Hang them on the wall with a little bit of double-sided mounting tape; cover your dining table or mantle with a selection of these leaves in the spirit of fall festivity, or place in a glass vase to be displayed.

What You Need: • 1/2 cup of water • 1/4 cup of vegetable glycerin
• Colorful leaves • Gallon Ziploc bag
How to Do It: 1. Gather colorful leaves. Be sure to selects ones that are not browning or brittle, still have the stem attached, and have no signs that insects have gnawed on them for a meal. 2. Place the leaves in the bag, laying them flat and not bunched up. 3. Mix up the solution of 1/2 cup of water and 1/4 cup of vegetable glycerin and pour into the bag. You only need enough of the solution to cover the leaves. 4. Seal the bag, pressing out the excess air. Let the leaves soak in the mixture for three to four days. 5. Remove the leaves from the solution and pat dry with a paper towel. Do not rinse. 6. Decorate to your heart’s content. PAINTING WITH LEAVES Looking for a fun craft to do with your kids or younger sibling? Look no further: painting with leaves is an activity that will capture their imagination. Use fall colors or neon colors or Aggie colors. Do a single-leaf print or cover the canvas in a multitude of different shapes and sizes and color patterns. Let their creativity run wild. What You Need: • Leaves in various shapes in sizes • Paper or canvas • Paintbrushes • Paint in the desired colors
LEAF CANDLE HOLDER The fall season is the season for candles. Create your own autumn-inspired candle jar with this tutorial from “Spark & Chemistry.” Things might get a little sticky, but the end result is worth it. Place a small votive candle, tea light, or battery-operated candle inside the finished jar for a glowing effect. What You Need: • Clear glass jar • Fake or real leaves • Mod Podge
• Sponge brush • Rafia, twine, or ribbon
How to Do It: 1. First, clean the outside of your jar with rubbing alcohol because the leaves won’t stick if the jar is oily or dirty. 2. If you’re using fabric leaves, iron them first to loosen the fibers. This makes them more pliable, and they will easily bend around the curves of the jar. For real leaves, dampen them slightly to unstiffen them. 3. Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge on the outside of the jar, and when it becomes sticky, place your leaves on top. Make sure to smooth out the leaves against the jar to get rid of any air bubbles. 4. Layer the jar with as many leaves as you want until the desired look is achieved. 5. Finish with a thin layer of Mod Podge over the leaves. This will seal everything together.
How to Do It: 1. Coat a side of leaf with a thin layer of paint in the colors desired. 2. Lightly press the paint-covered side of the leaf down onto the canvas or paper. 6. Once dry, tie some rafia, twine, or ribbon around the top of the jar for a 3. Pull back the leaf slowly as to not smear the print left behind. finishing touch. 4. Hang the finished products on the wall as part of your fall decoration.

A day after Veterans Day, the free event will celebrate mental health, hope, and recovery. Veterans are largely affected by mental illness, making up close to 20% of all national suicides. Celebrating mental health is the perfect way to honor our veterans that have been plagued by PTSD and other mental illnesses. The event isn’t only about veterans, though: it is about educating the community about all kinds of mental illnesses. Jody Shultz, the executive director of NAMI BV hopes that attendees will learn a few key things about mental illnesses. “I want attendees to take away this: mental illnesses are normal,” said Schultz. “One of every two people will have a mental health issue over their life. I want attendees – and the public - to know that NAMI is working very hard to end stigma around mental illnesses, provide quality education programs to the public and bring support our peers and our families through all the stages of mental health.” Jody got involved with NAMI because she experienced first hand the harm that mental illness stigma can cause.
A CELEBRATION OF HOPE By Annabeth Reeb
Mental Illness is something that is often overlooked and almost always stigmatized. One in five adults experience a serious mental illness in their lifetime. That statistics stays the same for children, as well. That’s a large number, and an even bigger reason to attend the National Alliance on Mental Illness Brazos Valley’s event this Thursday, November 12.
“I got involved as a mom whose son was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but as he grew up I thought he was just a bad kid… I got involved because if I only knew now what I knew then my son may have had a better outcome,” Schultz said. “He didn’t ask to have mental illness any more than someone asks to have a physical illness. But the ugly stigma surrounding being judged as ‘crazy’ kept him from coming to me with his symptoms. That has to change.” And indeed, the organization is working very hard to change just that. They raise money to be able to provide free and vital programs that support those suffering with mental illnesses. Without these programs, many sufferers would go unnoticed.
An organization with such a powerful purpose requires strong leadership. The “I love to see the public, peers and volunteers, our heroes, get their time to men and women who volunteer for NAMI BV give so much of their time to shine for all of the hard work that they do,” said Marcus Overstreet, Volunteer ensure the recovery of people struggling right here in Brazos Valley. Brazos Valley crisis and recovery,” Overstreet said. “My personal heroes like Marsha Linehan, Brian Cuban, Jayson Floyd and Tyler Grey have overcome mental illnesses to achieve wellness. I am equally inspired by family, friends and the heroes whose fight ended with their passing, along with the 22 American Veterans we lose every day to suicide in the United States.” NAMI is always looking for help, no matter what form it comes in. We asked Schultz for the best ways for members of the Brazos Valley Community to support the NAMI cause. “As a nonprofit, we depend on the community we serve,” Schultz said. “Anyone can make a difference to our community’s mental health by volunteering,
helping NAMI spread the message of hope and health, or by making a donation. Memberships begin at only $35 and can be made via phone at 979-774-4713 or on our website, www.namibv.org.” A generous donor will match every penny donated to NAMI. Head to the Greenbranch in Bryan this Thursday at 6pm to learn more about this inspiring organization, their members, and their cause.

JOSH ABBOTT BAND @ HURRICANE HARRY’S By Jordyn Smith
Texas Country favorites, Josh Abbott Band, will make their return to Hurricane Harry’s on Friday November 13. The band is a mainstay in College Station, having played all over town, including multiple times at Hurricane Harry’s and Chilifest. The band’s front-man, Josh Abbott, wowed the 2015 Chilifest crowd when he rode in on a camel. Needless to say, the band has been impressing since their inception in 2006.
has toured all over and has spent some time in Nashville writing and recording. The band has seen their music evolve over the past few years. From traditional Texas country to slightly more modern country, there is one thing that remains: they put on one heck of a show. The Josh Abbott Band has an extensive music catalog. They released their first demo, “Taste,” in 2007 and quickly followed that release with a tour. In 2009, the band released their first full album “Scapegoat.” As they continued to tour, the band dropped “She’s Like Texas” in 2010. The same year, they played for their first sold-out crowd at the historic Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. Included on the album was the hit “Oh, Tonight” which featured rising country star Kacey Musgraves.
The band was formed by Abbott when the members were all in school at Texas Tech University. At the time, Abbott was part of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was just a thesis away from his master’s degree when he decided to form his band and pursue music full-time. Since then, the band has been lighting up the Texas country music scene. They have played all over the state of Texas, but the past couple of years, they have expanded their horizons to the rest of the United States. The Josh Abbott Band The single was released in early 2011, it peaking at number 42 on the

Billboard Country Chart. The track would later be featured in the 2015 movie “The Longest Ride” starring Scott Eastwood. The album “She’s Like Texas” peeked at number 28 on the Billboard Country Albums Charts. The Josh Abbott Band’s third album “Small Town Family Dream” was released in April of 2012. It climbed to the number five spot on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. The second single “Touch” quickly became a fan favorite. The Josh Abbott Band just released their latest album “Front Row Seat” on November 6. “Front Row Seat” is a concept album, inspired by recent personal events. It promises to produce even more fan-favorites. The first single “Amnesia” was released in August. The 16-track album is the most emotionally-charged and challenging album yet for the band. The raw emotion and brutal honesty connect with a wider audience. Including Billy Bob’s, the Josh Abbott Band has played other historic venues like Nashville’s Exit/In, Chicago’s Joe’s Bar, Denver’s Grizzly Rose, and Los Angeles’ Troubadour. Combined with their success in Texas, the band is looking to continue to grow their fan base. This will be a cannot-miss show. Doors open at 9pm. Get your tickets before they run out at Cavenders, Aggieland Outfitters (University Drive location), or Southern Jewlz Boutique.

Our Brand Is Crisis (R) Political Satire By Linley McCord
If you’re expecting a political thriller, you will be fairly disappointed. “Our Brand Is Crisis” was marketed as a South American presidential drama but it’s more of a hyped-up and slightly overdone presidential candidacy. The marketing also makes zero allusions to the fact that this film is a satire of presidential campaigns, which was an interesting twist. The plot follows an American campaign strategist who is convinced to go help a South American candidate be elected president. The plot itself is solid. There’s an obvious leader in the polls, some tangled history between two American campaign managers, an underdog, and some mudslinging. While predictable, it’s entertaining. If you don’t realize it’s a satire going in, it just seems like a miss in terms of political movies. It still feels like a little bit of a miss even with that realization.

The satire bit was a nice angle, but overall not executed well. Not a must-see, but a decent movie if you’re just looking to be entertained. Divided into two parts, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” runs for a total two hours and thirteen minutes. It’s well worth the time. “Our Brand Is Crisis” gleans itself 5/10 stars for a solid attempt at political satire.
