Music Reviews Randy Rogers Band Album:

Nothing Shines Like Neon Release Date: January 15, 2016

By Jordyn Smith

The Randy Rogers Band is back with “Nothing Shines Like Neon.” The 11-track album kicks off with the nostalgic tune “San Antone.” The song hits home to any lover of the great Alamo City, a great lead-in to the rest of the album. The album moves flawlessly with “Rain and the Radio,” “Neon Blues,” and “Things I Need to Quit.” Rogers brings in bluegrass stars Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski on the track “Look Out Yonder.” The collaborations do not stop there. Jerry Jeff Walker lends his talents to “Takin’ It as It Comes,” where the rocking beat coupled with excellent fiddle and guitar riffs merges Texas country and classic rock themes into one. Singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson sings with Rogers in “Actin’ Crazy,” a laid-back track about dialing it down a notch or two. The Randy Rogers Band has done it once again, proving why they are some of Texas Country’s brightest stars.

“Blackstar” by the late David Bowie will go down as one of 2016’s most bittersweet albums. Released on his 69th birthday, this became Bowie’s first number one album. The 8-track record provides fans a last chapter in the illustrious career that Bowie had over many years.

David Bowie

The album kicks off with the title track “Blackstar,” a funky, ominous sounding track. The intricate rhythms backed by a great brass sections is complimented by Bowie’s vocals. “Lazarus” has a very somber, almost dirge-like quality that highlights the pain and passion that Bowie sings about in the lyrics. “Dollar Days” digs deeper into Bowie’s experimentation of different sounds and styles. Overall, the album has a very somber feel to it. “Blackstar” gives fans a great final chapter to the legend’s career and life.

Release Date: January 8, 2016

Album: Blackstar

Panic! At the Disco roared back into the music scene with “Death of a Bachelor.” The album is lead off with the up-tempo, funky “Victorious.” The hooks bring home the lyrics to the song and engage the listener well. “Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time,” sounds like a classic Panic! At the Disco track from the early 2000’s with a new modern twists. The band is able to bridge a gap in their music, by showing fans they remain the same lovable band but push their limits. They set up the rest of the album well, putting together a solid track list without fail. From the title track to “LA Devotee,” Panic! At the Disco has released a real winner.

Panic! At the Disco

Ricky Dillon has released his latest project, “Gold.” The 10-track album brings a different sound to the pop genre. In the Justin Bieber and One Direction dominated genre, Dillon has carved out his own niche. The album includes several great collaborations including one with Snoop Dogg himself. “Don’t Wanna Fall in Love” takes the listener to various states through Dillon’s perspective. “Problematic” featuring Snoop is a funky track that pushes the pop boundary and ventures into more of a rap/hip-hop feel. Snoop’s collaboration drives the song home. “Lottery” just belongs in a club, it is a great up-tempo track that brings balance to the album. “Gold” is a great next step for Ricky Dillon, by not conforming to current pop trends, he is able to stand out well.

COLORFUL DRAWER DIVIDERS Every house has at least one junk drawer crammed to the brim with random odds and ends. It’s time to wave goodbye and clean it out. Go through and figure out what you want to keep and get rid of what’s not needed by donating it, recycling it, or throwing it away if it is trash. When that’s all said and done, organize it. Making your own colorful drawer dividers instead of buying a plastic tray is a creative way to add personality to your home, even if it is just the inside of a drawer. But the great thing about this DIY project from “iHeart Organizing” is that it can be applied for multiple uses. Categorize the office supplies in your desk. Tidy up the drawers in your bathroom. Use larger boxes to create more storage for your closet.

LET’S GET ORGANIZED W elcome 2016! Per tradition, January is the month for writing a list of New Year’s resolutions and making changes. Whether it’s reducing clutter and organizing your home, choosing to eat healthier, or dedicating more time to spend with friends and family, everyone

Empty Food Boxes Box Cutters Decorative Paper Scissors

• Pencil • Ruler • Double-Sided Tape

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Gather up empty food boxes and using the drawer you want to place them in, mark the height around each edge of the box. 2. Then cut the boxes with the box cutter to the desired height. 3. The next few steps involve cutting and adding the decorative paper. Start by using a thin strip across the bottom, attaching it to the box with double sided tape. Use the eraser end of a pencil to push in the creases around the inside edges.

4. Repeat step 3 in the opposite direction. Again, push in the inside edges with a pencil eraser and tape it down. 5. With the paper applied to the sides and inside of the box, you’re all done! If you’d like, you can tape a strip of paper to the bottom of the box, but it’s not necessary since it won’t be seen. 6. Now just take your newly decorated, colorful boxes and start organizing!

WELCOME TO

2016 By Annabeth Reeb

A lot of things can change from year to year, even if that transition is only a few weeks of winter break. We can’t be sure exactly what 2016 will look like, but we can guess on a few key things. Hover-mania: Santa brought a lot of hover boards to a lot of different houses this year, so their presence on campus this year will be no surprise. Not only will there be an influx in the number of hover board-clad students, but now they come with a new twist: they explode! According to multiple news sources, the new toy has a trick that purchasers were not expecting: they catch on fire. So if you see smoking wheels on campus, be sure to run for cover. Campus Carry: Starting on the first day of the spring semesters students will be packing more than just their homework on Texas A&M campus. Whether you’re for or against the policy, 2016 is bringing a lot of heat. Post-Powerball Depression: Admit it, you thought about what your new year would be like with $1.5 billion at least once – regardless of how bad the odds were. No school, no job, maybe no more College Station. Even though we all knew the odds were slim-to-none, it still hurts when a dream that big dies. Apple Watches: These definitely aren’t new, but we guarantee quite a few people will be returning from break with new bling on their wrist. The question is, when will teachers start requiring you take off your watch during tests, quizzes, or even class? This trend is sure to bring some changes in classroom policy in 2016. The Last American Idol: With ratings down, American Idol has announced its last season. Does that make the last winner THE American Idol? We’re hoping for another Philip Philips to finish the show up right. Adele and Justin Bieber World Takeover: Hello, It’s me, is it too late to say sorry for taking over the world? Leo Dicaprio’s Last Hope: Okay, so it’s not his last hope, but things are going to get weird if he doesn’t finally win an Oscar this year. Star Wars Relevance: You can finally talk about Star Wars again without sounding like you’re stuck in the past. It’s been ten years since Revenge of the Sith released, but rest assured, with Disney making the calls we won’t have to wait another decade for the next one. Dabbing: This is the newest internet dance trend, making an impressive presence after the Nae Nae and the Wobble. Who knows what could come next. All in all, 2016 should be a good year if you stick to your resolutions and stay away from exploding hover boards.

ELI YOUNG BAND @ HURRICANE HARRY’S By Jordyn Smith

Eli Young Band is bringing their winter tour to Hurricane Harry’s on Wednesday January 20. The Texas-natives began their career while at the University of North Texas. Releasing their self-titled album in 2002, the band was quickly signed by Carnival Music. As they built their fan base, they played anywhere and everywhere that they could in the great state of Texas. In 2005, EYB released their sophomore album, “Level.” They continued to gain popularity as they toured with fellow-Texan Miranda Lambert. The band began to gain exposure not only in Texas but also in Nashville.

While working with producer Frank Liddell, the band began to work on their third album “Jet Black & Jealous.” The album was released in 2008. The lead-off single “When It Rains” peaked at number 34 on the charts. Their next single “Always the Love Songs,” a tune co-written by David Lee Murphy and George Ducas, proved to be their best-performing single todate. It peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Country charts. As their fan base continued to grow, EYB was able to tour outside of Texas.

After several years at Carnival Music, the band changed gears and signed to Big Machine Records on the Republic Nashville label. This move seemed small at first, but the release of “Crazy Girl” launched the band They earned air time on CMT and GAC, which propelled them to a national to a whole new level. The single became their first number one hit and audience. The increasing popularity of the band landed them opening their first platinum-selling single. Their next single was “Even If It Breaks gigs on Texas Country great’s tours. The Eli Young Band began to open Your Heart,” debuting as their next number one hit and platinum-selling for Pat Green, Robert Earl Keen, and Jack Ingram. single. After that, the nominations came rolling in. EYB received three

nominations for the Academy of Country Music Awards: Song of the Year, Top Vocal Group of the Year, and Single Record of the Year – they would go on to win the 2012 ACM for Song of the Year. EYB also had nominations in 2012 from Music Row Awards for Breakthrough Artist, CMT Music Awards Video of the Year, and CMA Award nominations for Vocal Group of the Year and Song of the Year. They even received their first Grammy nomination for “Even if It Breaks Your Heart.” Since 2012, the group has released “10,000 Towns,” “Turn It on EP,” and “Honey, I’m Good.” In between the success of their next releases, EYB has solidified their stay. In 2013, they joined Kenny Chesney as an opener for his No Shoes Nation Tour, have toured mid-sized venues as headliners, and have landed several number one hits. EYB is a proven success. From their humble beginnings in tiny Texas clubs and venues to stadium shows with Kenny Chesney, they have given their heart and soul to the road and to their fans. Their show at Hurricane Harry’s on Wednesday will be a can’t-miss show. Make sure to get your tickets early. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

By Luke Murray

J

errett Zoch and the OSR Band is a 4-piece band from Huntsville, specializing in high energy, down home Texas Music. Their style of music comes from various musical inspirations ranging from traditional country to southern rock, blues and Americana, and pure Red Dirt variety. The group has been rocking crowds from all over Texas and Louisiana since 2012. Their first record, self-titled “Jerrett Zoch and the OSR Band” was released at the end 2013 and enjoyed moderate success. The first record afforded them the opportunity to get out on the road and learn more about music while forming some incredible friendships with other professionals in the business. During early 2015, they were fortunate enough to be introduced to Rosewood Studios in Tyler, where they were pleased to enlist the talents of Phil Mosley on producing their new record. With Phil’s technical expertise and the hard work put in over the previous years, they were able to spend the summer of 2015 producing their new release “Kings and Queens.” Hands down, the pinnacle of their efforts so far. We sat down with the group to discuss the new record, what lies on the horizon, and how Aggieland’s Texas music scene can benefit from this new sound on the radio waves. MW: Your new album, “Kings & Queens,” just released and is already climbing the Texas Country charts; what types of

pg 12 • MAROON WEEKLY • Jan. 20, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

influence went into developing the sound and track list for the record? OSR: This track list has a lot of variety as compared to our previous works. We have traditional country sounds, gritty rock tunes, waltzes and slow ballads. We wanted to provide a vast variety of tones on this record in order to display a new and more developed sound to The OSR Band. The great people at Rosewood Studios provided us with an amazing studio and staff. We were also able to do production with our buddy Phil Mosley (from the East Texas Rock Group “Blacktop Mojo”), and he did an outstanding job with pre-production as well. So many great writers and musicians also collaborated in the studio with us and we are extremely thankful for their contributions. This is by far the best product we have been able to produce for our fans to date. We really look forward to the feedback from the media, friends, and fans. MW: How has the group’s style and character as artists evolved since the 2014 debut of your self-titled album? OSR: It’s really night and day from our 2014 release. We have grown, not only professionally as musicians, but also as businessmen as well. The road has been both kind and unkind to us over the past four plus years, but we take each day as a learning experience and we try to build off of previous successes and lessons. We have been fortunate enough to share the stage with some of the best acts in this scene and we seek advice and mentorship from those who have been doing this much longer than we have. We try to incorporate new business strategies and are constantly looking for ways to upgrade our gear, merchandise, and our live show experience in order to provide the best possible product to our customers. We really feel that “Kings and Queens” will be well-received and as stated above, we are always open to constructive feedback. MW: How does JZ & the OSR Band expect to influence the rich Red Dirt music scene in Bryan-College Station? OSR: Bryan-College Station has a thriving community that loves live music. Anyone who has spent a minute in this town has been witness to some of the amazing live music that is present there. Some of our fondest memories as a band were on the stage at Harry’s with our friend Clayton Gardner or rocking out with our buddies at The Tap. We currently are working several dates at various venues in the area, and we can’t wait to get back out here to see our fans. When in BCS, Layne’s and Fuego are a few of our favorite places to stop. We always tune in to our favorite Aggie radio stations while on the commute as well. While out on the road we are always meeting Aggies and we love hearing their input on the local music scene. MW: Now that you’re looking to blow open country radio in 2016, with a full year of shows already booked, what’s on the horizon for you guys?

OSR: We currently have dates scheduled for every month in 2016, and at this point we are just filling in the holes and scheduling any off time we are taking in the next year. The radio DJ’s and production directors/ managers have been nothing but upfront and professional to us over the years and we hope to keep that trend going into the future. Up ahead for the OSR Band is more working, grinding, and clawing to get to the top of the mountain. We have been so blessed with the support of fans, friends/family, and the professionals in this industry and we consider it a privilege to be able to perform for them on a consistent basis. We make it a habit to follow our fans rather than our fans following us, because as cliché as it sounds, they are the ones that make our dream of playing “Live, Loud and Local” Texas Music possible. We have already started writing the next record and are lining up several talented artists to come in and collaborate with us on that venture. Much like the image we portrayed on our new album “Kings and Queens”, this industry is a gamble, but we are willing to take the challenges head on in order to live out our dreams. Thanks for the Support, and we will see ya’ll down the road! Check out “Kings and Queens” on iTunes, Spotify, and Google. Ride Along 2 (PG-13)

By Luke Murray Historically, Hollywood has a way of botching sequels to the point of ruining the original – hence Hangover 2, Speed 2, Jaws 2, etc. However, we were taken by surprise with the return of Ice Cube and funnyman Kevin Hart for the second chapter of Ride Along. The movie begins with a focus on Hart’s upcoming wedding to Ice Cube’s sister. Hart, who recently graduated from the police academy, is itching at the opportunity to prove himself to his new to-be brother-in-law. Thus, opening plot opportunity. The movie’s antagonist, played by Benjamin Bratt, owns a large shipping company that operates out of the Port of Miami. With that type of money comes the buy-in of power, power leads to privilege – and the ability to hire muscle to conduct your dirty deeds – including but not limited to the murder of the port commissioner in an effort to buy political amnesty as a mechanism for covering up a multi-billiondollar black market operation. A mouthful, yes. But a seemingly well-developed plot for an action comedy. With that type of drama, there has to be some comedic relief to bring balance to the movie. That’s where Kevin Hart does what he does best, cause the audience to bust a gut at his seemingly effortless comedic mannerisms. From perfectly-time quips to over-the-top facial expressions, Hart’s delivery is spot-on. Ice Cube and Ken Jeong add a second dimension to the comedy, both delivering serious roles in a humorous way. So, how does the story play out? Here’s where the writers danced with the line of becoming a mirror of the original move. Fans of the original remember that Hart’s dumb luck is what leads to the absolving of the plot. It’s implied that heroically ending the mayhem in the first movie is what drives Hart’s decision to enter the police academy. For the sequel, you might expect there to be less luck and more skill, right? Well actually yes, and no. At the end of the day, it’s still a Kevin Hart movie, and his fans won’t be disappointed. However, we give compliments to the writers for pulling off a risky sequel in well-executed fashion; this movie is better than most comedy sequels.

The Mysteries of Laura NETFLIX By Adrianna Zampieri If you’re a fan of crime shows, then you’ve probably dedicated a few hours of your life to watching “Law and Order,” “NCIS,” and “Criminal Minds.” Let us introduce you to your next obsession, “The Mysteries of Laura.” A light-hearted take on what is normally a drama-filled genre, “The Mysteries of Laura” revolves around Laura Diamond – a NYPD homicide detective with a messy car, messy desk, and messy life. Sometimes she has trouble wrangling her two wild boys into behaving, and dealing with her ex-husband (now her boss) is no walk in the park either. But she’s an expert at solving crimes and catching criminals. This show is a breath of fresh air in the television world of cops and bad guys. Rather than swimming in drama and angst, it approaches the crime genre from a different angle using comedy to incite laughter from its viewers. While it still brings the element of mystery to the table, there’s more to it than just the satisfaction of closing cases. The characters exchange banter, quips, and sassy remarks on a regular basis, and relatable, humorous moments fill each episode. Clearly not every homicide detective has an easy time being an adult. Clear your schedule, because episode one will reel you in, and it’s not going to let you go.
