Kip Moore Album: Wild Ones

Release Date: August 21, 2015

By Jordyn Smith

Kip Moore’s sophomore album “Wild Ones” is an eclectic mix of country and rock. The album flows well from track to track, mixing up-beat anthems with several ballads that pull at memories of summers past. Moore has found a sound that connects him better to his audience. The title track “Wild Ones” is a classic rebel anthem and the title would suggest. Similar to Eric Church’s “The Outsiders” track, “Wild Ones” delivers a single that encourages all of us to unleash our wild side. Tracks like “Come And Get It” and “What Ya Got On Tonight” have a Springsteen quality that resonates well with listeners. Kip’s country roots comes through in “Burn The Whole World Down” and “What I Do.” “Backseat” and “Girl Of The Summer” take the listener back in time to young, summer-love. Overall, the album brings a great variety to the season’s country music.

The new 12-track album from Grace Potter expertly showcases her wide range and ability to pull her listeners in for more. “Midnight” is the kind of album that you crank the volume up for and shamelessly sing at the top of your lungs as you’re going down the road. Comprised of up-tempo tracks “Hot to the Touch,” “Alive Tonight,” and “Delirious” are complimented by a funky set—“Your Girl” and “Nobody’s Born With a Broken Heart”—but the emotional highlight of the record goes to “Let You Go.” Grace displays her incredible range in every song on “Midnight”, putting her brilliantly evolved sound on full display.

GRACE POTTER Album: Midnight Release Date: August 14, 2015

Upon hearing the name “Carly Rae Jepsen” most would remember her mega-hit “Call Me Maybe.” Many wondered if Jepsen could evolve and mature her music after 2012’s summer anthem. “Emotion” has exceeded expectations. Jepsen has created a 15-track deluxe album that encompasses all of the pop genre. Several tracks on the album have a great 80’s pop vibe to them with title track leading the way. Jepsen covers a wide variety of topic, including a great job of not sticking to one-dimensional love-songs. From falling in love in “Run Away with Me” to having bigger issues than boy trouble in “Boy Problems” to even being friendzoned in “Your Type.”

CARLY RAE JEPSEN Album: Emotion Release Date: June 23, 2015

For the first time in 16 years, Dr. Dre has dropped a new album with “Compton.” Serving as the soundtrack for the summer blockbuster smash“Straight Outta Compton,” this album is chock-full of hooks, impressive lyrics, and star-studded cameos. Dr. Dre enlists his protégées Kendrick Lamar and Jon Connor, along with friends Snoop Dog, and Xzibit, as well as his former N.W.A members Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella. Dr. Dre and his comrades harness pain, determination, and strength to compose this record, brilliantly illustrating the struggles they faced as well as their hopes and dreams. Dre is back, and in superb fashion.

Kyle Field: The Vision By Luke Murray

The long-standing beacon of pride and comradery in Aggieland has received the most glorious facelift in Texas football…well, football history. Period. There’s likely more than a handful of Texas A&M students that will even tell you that they couldn’t care less about tuition increases to fund the behemoth remodeling of their Saturday home. It seems like only yesterday, we’re sitting in 2011, winding down our last season in the lackluster Big XII Conference, already dreaming of moving day but not knowing if the pasture was truly greener down south.

When Texas A&M first announced their plans to move into the SEC, did anyone really fathom the undertaking and drastic changes that their storied university was about to undergo? It was like the 2008 Presidential Race all over again, Aggies wanted change, but a change of what? We knew that our potential had been eclipsed in the Big XII, our facilities could no longer contain our passion, and our longing for glory couldn’t be matched by a tired list of opponents. We needed more.

President Bowtie helmed a journey into a new era for Texas A&M University, one that would be heavily commercialized and propel the maroon and white to the forefront of collegiate prominence. It all started with the 2012 season, a guy named Sumlin, his faith in a kid from Kerrville, a historic trophy, a blowout bowl game, and an agreement that we would invest in a facility that would hold more than 100,000 of the loudest and proudest fans on any given Saturday. This all falls under the vision of what Kyle Field and Texas A&M Football has become, but what does it mean for you?

Weekly parties with an additional 20,000 of your closest friends to celebrate maroon-clad victories with. Edwin J. Kyle, the immortalized name plastered on the side of the largest collegiate football facility in the state of Texas, could not have known how his original investment into the universe of Texas football would unfold over the years. The original cost of Kyle Field, in 1927, was $345,000. Today, 5 renovations later, the current remodel tipped the scales at a massive $485 million. With everything upgraded, down to the grout and individual blades of grass (and hopefully something to eliminate the bat smell), the new home for the historic 12th Man is destined to stand as a benchmark for athletic facilities for decades to come.

THE PARTY The grand reopening of Kyle Field is scheduled to kick off on September 11, the day before the Aggies’ first home football game this season. The party will continue on through the weekend with fireworks, a free concert, and tours of the newly unveiled facility. Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp has said that Kyle will be the largest collegiate football stadium in Texas and one of the largest in the nation, boasting a suite of unrivaled amenities. “I can’t wait to hear the reactions from every single fan after opening day,” Sharp said. “More restrooms, better cell phone coverage, terrific food – we hope everyone finds the game day experience even better than ever.” The weekend’s festivities will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday the 11th with re-dedication of the relocated statue of the late John David Crow. Texas A&M’s first Heisman Trophy winner will get memoralized with a revamped, larger-than-life bronze statue that has been moved away from the Bright Football Complex to a much more fitting location on the west side of the stadium. A uniquely different combination of entertainment will be present for the free concert to kickoff the entertainment. In typical Texas fashion, Red Dirt favorite Pat Green will bring his storied style to Simpson Drill Field. Green’s new album brings a fresh line of tracks to his repertoire, with the help of Sheryl Crow and famed Texas A&M Former Student Lyle Lovett, among others. Green will be followed by Grammy-nominated rock group Relient K. What is being claimed as the “World’s Largest Tailgate” will begin on Friday night. Fireworks, coinciding with a grand Yell Practice, will ring through the night as the maroon alumni prepare to take on Ball State. The Global Tailgate will begin on September 12, and is promising to be one of the largest social media spectacles in sports history. Wherever you are celebrating Aggie Football, register your tailgate at http:// kylefield.com/global-tailgate, then use #KyleField for all social media posts on gameday to become part of the year’s greatest sports celebration.

With the many things going on in our lives during college, it may seem hard to mix your social life with you’re academic/career life, but being involved in more than just one thing can be a lot more easy and fun than you think. There are countless organizations on campus that are major-focused to not only help you in your career, but also to introduce you to many other students who have similar goals. Any kind of organization that you join is beneficial to your resume because it shows that you can balance both school and extra-curricular activities. Many job recruiters want young men and women who are well-rounded and have different hands-on experience working within their field. Internships should be on everyone’s mind even when you are a freshman or sophomore in college, and most college students should be getting numerous internships and jobs during their junior and senior years. Many employers are looking for quality workers they could potentially hire after an internship is finished, so it is crucial to gain connections and relationships with people who can make you go farther in your career. Your best resources for all of these things are usually right under your nose. For example, the Texas A&M Career Center is hosting an event known as “Resumania” on Monday, September 7 from 9 AM to 6 PM in room 2406 at the MSC. Its exactly how it sounds, any student can bring their resume to get critiqued by Career Center professionals, and they’ll even answer questions about what to wear to an interview and anything else in between. Preparing for life outside of college can be very intimidating but your school is here to help. Aggies are built to succeed, it’s just up to you to get involved.

Jon Wolfe @ Hurricane Harry’s By Jordyn Smith Jon Wolfe is set to make his Hurricane Harry’s return on September 4th. Wolfe, Oklahoma native, has had an interesting path into the world of country music. He began in the oil business, after being transferred to Houston from Chicago. One Alabama concert later, Wolfe found himself in Austin pursuing his dream to become a singer-songwriter. After a self-released album in 2004, Wolfe signed his first record deal with Midas Records Nashville. A few years later, in 2010, Wolfe performed at South by Southwest and released his second studio album “It All Happened in a Honky Tonk.”

his third record. In March of this year, he released “Natural Man.” The album debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Top Country chart.

After his showcase at South by Southwest, he formed his own record label, Fool Hearted Productions. Wolfe was able to sign a record deal with Warner Bros. Nashville. Warner then planned to release “It All Happened in a Honky Tonk” with three new songs.

Wolfe’s most recent release, “Natural Man,” combines his classic country sound with modern, edgy radio style of country. Produced partly by Wolfe himself, the album was recorded at Nashville’s Westwood Studios and Ronnie’s Place. Wolfe refers to the 13-track set as “a concept that I have wanted to record for a few years.”

After the release of the deluxe edition, Wolfe left Warner and signed with Tone Tree Music. He promptly began to work on

In the midst of changing record labels, Wolfe has been lighting up the Texas charts. He’s had six consecutive Top Ten singles: “Let A Country Boy Love You,” “That Girl In Texas,” “I Don’t Dance,” “It All Happened In A Honky Tonk,” “The Only Time You Call” and “What Are You Doing Right Now.” These Top Ten singles have made Wolfe a hot commodity on the Texas and Red Dirt music scenes.

“This album stretches me as an artist and as a vocalist,

while staying true to who I am,” Wolfe says. “I have known how I wanted it to sound, and how I wanted it to look for some time now. I’ve been visualizing this album for such a long time, and it feels great to finally bring it to life!” For the show at Harry’s, special guest Justin Van Sant is also making his return to Aggieland. Van Sant, a native of Houston, was named by the Houston Press as “Best Country Act” in 2012 and then again in 2013. Van Sant has an impressive performing resume, from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Hideout tent to the famous Blue Bird cafe in Nashville. Van Sant has opened for many Texas Country greats, Wade Bowen and Charlie Robison to name a couple. Van Sant released his first single “Destination Me and You” this past June. Doors at Harry’s open at 9 pm on September 4th. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Cavendars, Aggieland Outfitters (on University Dr.), and Southern Jewlz (on Harvey Rd.) or at the door the day of the show.

Whether you’re a Fish or a Super Senior, the first week of classes can be daunting for anyone— and making friends isn’t always easy. Even if it comes naturally for you, it can never hurt to meet some new people, especially if you’re looking for allies in that one class that you may want skip once in a while and need a good-standing note buddy. If your class is located in a building, let’s say Blocker or Heldenfels for instance, chances are you’re in a room with at least 300 other students. That’s a lot of potential friendships waiting to happen. Arrive to class early and find someone to make nice with. It may seem uncomfortable at first, sitting next to a complete stranger, but you’re both in the same situation. And if they have no interest in talking with you, don’t be discouraged; sit by someone different next time until someone returns the pleasantries. Next thought, remember that you’re in college: Spend time on campus rather than hibernating in your room. Go hangout at the MSC or work on assignments in the library. Eat your lunch in the dining hall. Participate in REC Center classes. You may overlook these opportunities or even see them as a tad ridiculous, but chance are that you’ll never be alone. Pro tip: Make sure to put away your phone and take those headphones out of your ears from time to time. If you need to abate your solo life, having distractions won’t help. Pay attention to the person you’re speaking with and engage in the conversation. Aggieland, and the University in particular, boast more than 1,000 clubs that cater to every kind of interest from reading and hunting, to Quidditch and entomology. There’s something for everyone, and it’s a great way to surround yourself with like-minded people. Many of these clubs will be participating in the MSC Open House on September 6. Stop by for an hour or so to browse the tables, find an organization you’re interested in joining, and maybe make a new friend or two while you’re there.

DIY for the (Wannabe) Organized Mind By Adrianna Zampieri Summer is over; the semester has started, and it’s time to get your stuff together. Daily assignments. Quizzes. Exams. Essays. Projects. Your workload will pile up before you know it, and you don’t want it getting out of control. And you definitely don’t want to be that person who misses an exam because you wrote down the wrong date. Being organized is an essential part of your success, so how do you manage the chaos? Enter your new best friend: a simple day-planner. If you’re feeling particularly crafty, take the time to make your own planner. Spending time and money putting it together means you are less likely to abandon it, and planners require commitment. The money spent on a custom planner, however, won’t hit your bank account nearly as hard as a $40 proplanner from Office Max or Lilly Pulitzer. Instructions for a Simple Planner:

1. Acquire a binder in the color and size you desire. Smaller binders can be found at craft stores such as Michael’s. 2. Create a template in Microsoft Word or Adobe InDesign that mimics the pages you would see in a store-bought planner. Don’t have the time? No problem. Free templates are available on Pinterest. Print off as many as you need, and put them in your binder. 3. Use binder tab dividers to separate the months. 4. Add your own personal touch to the pages of your planner. Feeling Redass? Cover it with TAMU stickers and pictures of Rev. Write in maroon ink. Pet parent? Plaster it with photos of your furry, scaly, feathered friends on every page. Or simply just bedazzle the heck out of it—if you prefer things a litte flashy. Point being, the possibilities are endless and you can’t risk falling behind in your studies from the very beginning. Take a little control on the cheap, and have fun with it.

Welcome Back to Aggieland By Annabeth Reeb

With new and returning students flooding into the city of maroon, it is important to remember the dos and do-nots of Aggieland. College Station transforms from a quiet town to a rowdy city practically overnight when fall comes around. That’s right, its time for Aggie football, cold beer, and the loudest group of fans in the world. Welcome home, Ags. DO check out Kyle Field’s makeover. TAMU’s new pride and joy is ready to be admired. Scope it out before the first game because, well, why not. It may be hard to see the actual stadium with 100,000 plus fans screaming on game day. DO NOT forget about school supplies. With all of the excitement and energy of Syllabus Week, it’s easy to forget about the star of the week: your syllabus. Which leads us to another tip. DO go to your first days of class. You never know what your professors are going to throw on you, and it’s best to take them head on. DO splurge a little. You’ve been away from Fuego queso too long my friends, so now is not the time to save pennies during lunch. That will be important next week when you remember what it’s like to live on a college budget. If you’re not worried about burning a hole in your pocket quite yet them go for the gold and switch to Torchy’s queso.

pg 16 • MAROON WEEKLY •Sept. 2, 2015 • maroonweekly.com

DO NOT forget the Emergen-C. With allergies already having everyone in the dumps, the added festivities of syllabus week will not be helping your health. Whether it’s something a little stronger or just a really great collection of herbal teas. You’ll need something to nourish your body during the first few weeks amongst the pollen and the parties. DO get back on that coffee grind. Sure, there are some people who swear that it’s bad for you, but we choose to ignore them and only look at the good: it keeps you up and it keeps you focused. DO NOT wait in line at the MSC bookstore. Order your books ahead of time or scan Amazon for a cheaper find. Whichever way you go, opt for shipping your returned books back at the end of the semester to avoid the hour-long lines. DO take advantage of Snapchat filters. With Snapchat on the rise, filters are popping up everywhere you go, on campus, around town, and even in Hollister at Post Oak. There’s nothing better than making your best snaps better with these fancy filters. Don’t like any of them? Submit your own! DO NOT leave your room for food! You don’t have to! Take advantage of College Station’s delivery services, like Aggiefood, and become the hungry-hermit you’ve always wanted to be. DO have fun. It is college after all! Yes, handle your responsibilities. Do your homework. Study for exams. But set aside some time to kick back or dive in to memory-forging festivities that Aggieland has to offer. Dixie Chicken anyone? However you decide to spend your fall semester, stay safe and smart with these tips and tricks to surviving the migration back to BCS!

A few of Aggieland’s summer galleries are about to make way for fall season. So, whether you are a student just getting into town, on vacation, or simply just hadn’t found the time to go, don’t miss your chance to see these one-of-a-kind exhibits before they’re gone! A Second Look: Interpretations of Works (Forsyth Gallery) The gallery collaborated with local artists to showcase their permanent collection in a new and exciting way. Artists from around the area were asked to interpret and respond to a piece from the collection. The artists came up with new works in various media making viewers take a second look at the original piece the artist’s eyes. The exhibit will make way for a new one September 9. Crystal Clear: The Science of Glass (Forsyth Gallery) Forsyth Gallery is well known for their diverse collection of art glass, both English cameo glass and American glass. “Crystal Clear” exhibits the glass in a new way by not only showing the beauty of the glass, but also telling the scientific process of how the glass was made. They explain how temperature, minerals and processes in nature can affect how the glass turns out and gives it a different look. This exhibit will be up until September 6.

As Above So Below (Reynolds Gallery) The MSC Visual Arts Committee is hosting an exhibition showcasing the mixed media works of Bobbie Molne-Kramer, which combine the worlds of realism and abstraction. The subjects of Molne-Kramer’s work are snow monkeys. In the artwork, she hints at the subjects within what at first glance looks to be an abstract piece. The unique technique is one you shouldn’t miss. Take a look before it goes on September 12. More information on these and future exhibits can be found at the MSC Visual Arts Committee Facebook page (Reynolds Gallery), and uart.tamu.edu/forsyth-exhibitions.

If I Stay

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Action/Adventure (PG-13) By Linley McCord Charming but not overly impressive, this summer’s spy film is a passable effort from cinematographers nationwide. “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” is a spinoff from the 1960’s show that followed a similar plot of espionage and underhand government action, and the movie has a distinct old-fashioned flair. Set during the Cold War, the story weaves through Russian and American tensions, an underdeveloped third-party villain, and a trio of reluctantly cooperative individuals. The villain is boring and unimpressive, with a sole objective of creating a nuclear bomb by way of a kidnapped chemist. Creating an obvious entry point for our reluctant trio comes in to save the day. Henry Cavill, who you probably remember from “Man of Steel,” partners up with “The Social Network’s” Armie Hammer to create two of the film’s three protagonists. CIA agent Napolean Solo (Cavill) and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Hammer) immediately grab attention through their patriotic distrust for one another, which begins with a clever—but too-long—opening action sequence. Beautiful and skeptical, actress Alicia Vikander stars as Gaby Teller, the German daughter of the kidnapped chemist. She completes the trio, and frankly put forth the best acting in the movie. While her accent wavered, she excelled at behaving as the disinclined and underhand fake fiancé of Hammer. Do not be deceived: this is not your typical spy movie. Think “Kingsman” in terms of style with the majority of the cast being able to pull off the tongue-in-cheek humor. While there is not nearly as much expletives or gore, the jokes were much of the same. The movie bounced between fast-paced action and slow conversation, but the script was entertaining and well-written. “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” is worth the watch, but don’t set your expectations too high. The film is rated PG-13 for some violence and language.

Netflix By Linley McCord Netflix recently updated their movie archive with teen heartbreaker “If I Stay,” which hit theaters back in August of 2014. Starring Chloe Grace Mortez as musically talented Mia Hall, the film follows her journey after a tragic car accident in the form of flashbacks and activity in her comatose brain. Based on a novel of the same name, written by Gayle Forman, “If I Stay” as a film is a corny—but just as saddening—resemblance to recent teen blockbusters like “The Fault in Our Stars” or “The Best of Me.” It feels like another tragic Nicholas Sparks love story, but refreshingly does not draw from the same cliché casting pool. The plot bounces between flashbacks and the present with clarity but without smooth transitions, and character development only manifests itself in our unconscious protagonist. Mia experiences events after the car accident as a ghost-like spirit. She maintains her physical form and she isn’t translucent, but she is somehow able to be omnipresent as she wanders around the hospital to check in on her family and mourning friends. You’re able to see her family dynamic, chaotic romantic life, and talent on the cello all through flashbacks. The overarching question throughout the movie is whether Mia will elect to give up and succumb to death in the midst of the trauma surrounding her family’s fate or will herself to live for a second chance at life. Again, her decision will not surprise you.
