Music Reviews Vince Gill

By Jordyn Smith

Album:

Country legend Vince Gill is back with “Down to My Las Bad Habit.” The Country star’s latest 12-track album brings some serious soul back into the country genre. Gill’s impressive vocal range is showcased on each track. The album kicks off with the up tempo track “Reasons for the Tears I Cry.” This is a great kick-off track that sets the tone for the album. Following “Reasons for the Tears I Cry,” is the title track.

Release Date: February 512 2016

This ballad is a heart-wrenching tune. The honesty and authenticity that has gone into this album is apparent. It drives the album forward. Gill brings in fellow country artists Cam and Little Big Town to collaborate on “I’ll Be Waiting for You,” and “Take Me Down,” respectively. Gill also tips his hat to the late George Jones “Sad One Comin’ On (A Song for George Jones.” Gill has knocked it out of the park once again.

Release Date: February 12, 2016

Rap artist Datin is back with “The Roar.” The 14 track album has a quality about it that is not really heard the first time you listen to it. The lyrics of each track are meticulously written and placed to bring a great flow to the album. Unlike many of the current releases, this album does not get the label of “explicit content.” This brings out something in Datin, his careful thought into his lyrics bring out his points without letting the listeners get lost in the fillers. Datin brings in many fellow rappers Stefan Otto, Sean C. Johnson, Bizzle, Sevin, Franky Bells, and many others and the collaborations bring the tracks to another level. They help bring a different perspective to the record. If you have been wanting to find a great flowing, lyrically inclined rap album, The Roar is for you.

Rocker Lacey Sturm has released “Life Screams.” She brings her own flare to the rock genre with this album. The 11 track album is a collection of tracks with impressive breakdowns, great vocals, and it dabbles with different styles. From “Impossible” to “I’m Not Laughing” to the title track “Life Screams,” you get a real sense of Lacey Sturm as an artist.

Former American Idol winner Lee DeWyze is back with “Oil & Water.” The American Idol alum is reaching new heights with this record. This album has a very singer/songwriter feel to it, coming through in tracks like “Again,” “Stone,” “Learn to Fall,” and “Hollyridge.” The title track encompasses the album as a whole. There is an emotional rawness to the track—and the album.

Her vocal ability is impressive and the music accompaniment backing her is flawless. She has also balanced her album well with a healthy blend of up-tracks and ballads. Included as a treat is a live version of the track “Roxanne.” This track shows Sturm’s live ability and ability as a performer that will accelerate her to new heights.

His ability to reign in this rawness is what accelerates this album to another level. His vocals bring a somber perspective that adds to the emotional rawness and the layering of emotions with the music and the lyrics rounds out the album nicely. DeWyze has really come through in his new record, it will be great to see how he builds on his career moving forward.

Be Our Guest! By Adrianna Zampieri

T

he Messina Hof Winery and Resort invites you to their “Cooking Party with the Chef” on February 21. Featuring succulent French dishes, this is a party at the Vintage House Restaurant you won’t want to miss. Savannah Gaines, PR Coordinator for Messina Hof, promotes this experience as a way for participants to “take home a new understanding and appreciation of the art of cooking and wine while enjoying the company of peers.” Inspired by Messina Hof’s “Vineyard Cuisine Cookbook,” “Cooking Party with the Chef” is all about pairing food with wine. Gaines elaborates, “Every dish in the Vintage House incorporates Messina Hof wine, and at our cooking parties, we do the same thing – focus on wine and food.” So from 1 to 3 p.m., embark on a French culinary adventure and challenge your traditional American palette. A full menu for the event is available online, courses including escargot (otherwise known as snails), foie gras (a food product made from the liver of a fattened goose or duck), steak frites, and a mouthwatering chocolate soufflé. French cuisine may seem intimidating and foreign at first glance, but you’ll be in good hands with Executive Chef Glenn Huggins, who studied at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. During the event, he’ll be demonstrating classic French cooking techniques while providing tips and tricks for establishing the perfect partnership between food and wine. And if French cuisine isn’t your cup of tea, Messina Hof hosts a party every month focusing on a variety of other cuisines and techniques. Are you a fan of brunch? On March 20, learn how to make classic brunch dishes with a special twist. Enjoy traditional Italian cooking in April, or add a little spice in your life in May with Cajun cuisine. Tickets are available online through their website for $69.95 each. Buy one soon for a lesson you won’t forget because a dinner here is never second best!

ith more than 300 types of cheese, more than three-dozen varieties of artisan bread, and at least 16,000 wineries throughout the country, it’s safe to say that France takes their food seriously. They’re renowned for their sophisticated cooking techniques, using only the crème de la crème of ingredients to carefully craft complicated and classic dishes, yet they’re also able to combine just a few ingredients to create a simple yet sophisticated meal. Even though France is on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, America continues to be influenced by their haute cuisine, both in the present and in the past. American-born Julia Child brought French cuisine to the U.S. with her first cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” in 1961, and the movie industry frequently draws on French culture to influence the production of films such as “Julie & Julia” and Disney’s “Ratatouille.” But even if authentic French food is 5,000 miles out of reach, you can pop one of those movies into your TV, choose a delicious recipe, and try your own hand at cooking these traditional culinary dishes. Here are a few to get you started on your exploration of French cuisine. TRADITIONAL FRENCH CHOCOLATE MOUSSE France has a long history with chocolate, having cooked with this sweet ingredient since the early 17th century. This recipe for a creamy and rich traditional chocolate mousse from “Boulder Locavore” will have your taste buds believing they’re in France. WHAT YOU NEED: • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, grated or finely chopped • Unsalted butter to grease jars or ramekins

BON APPÉTIT

pg 8 • MAROON WEEKLY • Feb. 17, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

• 4 Eggs, room temperature and separated • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 1/8 teaspoon lemon juice

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in a metal heat-proof bowl placed over a saucepan of boiling water. Stir as chocolate is melting. Remove from heat when melted to cool slightly. 2. Butter four 3-inch diameter ramekins or 7-8 ounce canning jars. Set aside. 3. In the bowl of a stand mixer (hand mixer may also be used) beat egg whites on high until frothy; add the lemon juice. 4. Continue to beat egg whites, slowly adding the granulated sugar a few

tablespoons at a time (allow to mix in before adding more). Beat eggs until stiff but not dry. 5. Stir egg yolks into the chocolate. Gently stir in a third of the egg white mixture into the chocolate. 6. Combine the chocolate mixture into the bowl with the egg white mixture and gently mixture together completely. Note: Though the eggs are combined with the warmed chocolate they are not fully cooked. Using pasteurized eggs should reduce the risk of contracting Salmonella from eating raw eggs. 7. Spoon the mousse mixture into the prepared ramekins or jars and gently tap the containers on a countertop to release any bubbles. 8. Cover and fully chill before serving. RATATOUILLE’S RATATOUILLE Hailing from present day Nice, France, this healthy and aesthetically pleasing meal started out as a peasant dish, prepared in the summer by farmers when fresh vegetables were abundant. “Smitten Kitchen” adapted this traditional recipe into her own version inspired by Disney’s “Ratatouille.” WHAT YOU NEED: • 1/2 onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, very thinly sliced • 1 cup tomato puree • 1/4 tsp. oregano • 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided

• 1 small eggplant • 1 zucchini • 1 yellow squash • 1 long red bell pepper • Few sprigs of fresh thyme • Salt and pepper

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. 2. Pour tomato puree into bottom of an oval baking dish, approximately 10 inches across the long way. Drop the sliced garlic cloves and chopped onion into the sauce, stir in oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, one tablespoon of the olive oil, and season the sauce generously with salt and pepper. 3. Trim the ends off the eggplant, zucchini, and yellow squash. Trim the top of the red pepper and remove the core. 4. On a mandoline, adjustable-blade slicer, or with a very sharp knife, cut the eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash and red pepper into very thin slices, approximately 1/16-inch thick. 5. Atop the tomato sauce, arrange slices of prepared vegetables concentrically from the outer edge to the inside of the baking dish, overlapping so just a smidgen of each flat surface is visible, alternating vegetables. You may have a handful leftover that do not fit. 6. Drizzle the remaining tablespoon olive oil over the vegetables and season them generously with salt and pepper. Remove the leaves from the thyme sprigs with your fingertips, running them down the stem. Sprinkle the fresh thyme over the dish. 7. Cover the dish with a piece of parchment paper cut to fit inside. 8. Bake for approximately 45 to 55 minutes, until vegetables have released their liquid and are clearly cooked, but with some structure left so they are not totally limp. They should not be brown at the edges, and you should see that the tomato sauce is bubbling up around them. 9. Serve with a dab of soft goat cheese on top, alone, or with some crusty French bread, atop polenta, couscous, or your choice of grain.

Million Dollar Quartet @ Rudder Theater

By Evan Flores

A

re you looking to relive some of Broadway’s greatest hits? Or are you seeking to experience what it was like to see some of music’s greatest hits live? This weekend, MSC OPAS is bringing back some of the most wellknown singers of all time as they relive some of music’s greatest moments with Million Dollar Quartet: The Broadway Musical Inspired by The Greatest Jam Session in History. The event will have impersonators representing a number of musical talents from classical rock and roll, such as Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley altogether. The show Million Dollar Quartet is set on December 4, 1956, when a miraculous twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley together in a match made in heaven. That day, Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, gathered the four legendary musicians at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The resulting evening became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam

sessions in history and influenced generations of artists for years to come. The international musical has gained fame with a number of awards and famous impersonators that make up the show. “Million Dollar Quartet” received three Tony Award nominations in 2010 (Best Musical, Book of a Musical and Actor in a Featured Role). Levi Kreis won the Tony Award for Actor in a Featured Role (“Memphis” won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical). The cast is made up of a number of talented artists, such as Evan Buckley Harris portraying Johnny Cash, Jason Cohen as Jerry Lee Lewis, and Skip Robinson depicting one of the most recognizable rock superstars, Elvis Presley. In addition to the lead singers, supporting roles include Matthew Scott playing the character of Sam Phillips, who discovered this dream team and Jackey Good will portray Dyanne, Elvis’ girlfriend that attended the session. The conglomerate of performers make up the talented cast and will be coming this weekend on Texas A&M’s campus. The performance will be at Rudder Auditorium February 19 and 20, tickets can be found at the MSC OPAS site, along with more information about the event itself.

lip on your cowboy boots and enjoy your Friday night out on February 19 at the Grand Stafford Theater listening to the musical talents of country singer-songwriters Josh Grider, Drew Kennedy, and Sarah Olivia Buss. With a deep voice and a slight twang, Josh Grider was born to sing country music. Grider has been a respected member of the Texas and Red Dirt music scene for years, first introduced to the scene when he moved to Waco from Colorado for college, and he finally landed a big break in 2012 that launched him front and center: a publishing deal with AMP Entertainment. His EP “The Gettin’ There” produced three number one songs on the Texas Regional Radio Report, including “Lone Star Highway,” as well as two number one songs on the Texas Music Chart. Listening to

his music, your feet won’t stop tapping to the rhythm. Drew Kennedy first picked up the guitar at 19 and hasn’t looked back. Since he dropped his first country album “Hillbilly Pilgrim” back in 2003, Kennedy has released six other albums, wrote a companion novel to his album “Fresh Water in the Salton Sea,” and created the Red River Songwriters’ Festival. He’s a man on a mission to write the best songs he can and share them with anyone who is willing to listen, and once you hear his soulful voice, you won’t want to stop listening. A previous performer at the Grand Stafford, Sarah Olivia Buss is returning to the stage. Buss is a talented girl armed with an acoustic guitar, and she knows how to use it. Even though she’s still in high school, Buss has a talent that far exceeds her age. She’s even as comfortable on a stage as a seasoned performer. This emerging singer-songwriter might just be the next Taylor Swift. For a taste of her musical style, her catchy, original singles “Taxi” and “Old Polaroid” are available on iTunes. Doors open at 7 p.m., so arrive early to claim a prime spot by the stage by time the music starts at 8. Tickets starting at $8 are available for purchase online on the Grand Stafford Theater’s website.

NATE GRANT @

NEW REPUBLIC BREWING CO. By Annabeth Reeb

I

t’s that time of year again—the sun is coming out but the temperature is staying just right. With a high of 81 degrees, there’s no better place to be this Friday than New Republic Brewery to see Nate Grant take the stage. Head on out to New Republic’s taproom on February 9th from 5-10 for a guaranteed good time.

Grant’s smooth voice and polished music make the perfect ambiance for any night—especially under the starts with a beer in hand. There’s more to Grant’s music than a pretty voice, though. Grant not only started late in his music career—his mid 30’s—but he also started with nothing. While chasing his new dream he lived out of his car and took showers in whatever gas station sink he could find. An experience like that truly shows itself in music, and Grant isn’t an exception. His lyrics are raw and emotional, and his songs are exactly what you want to hear on calm night out. Grant’s sound is somewhat like that of Graham Colton, the musician who gave him the kick-start he needed in the beginning of his career. The two met when Graham was playing with Green River Ordinance at a club. Grant had arrived early to watch the sound check and ended up talking with Graham. After a couple of phone-recorded demos four years later, Graham produced Grant’s first EP and the rest is history. Grant is continuing to climb in his career, with his EP now gaining radio interest. His EP features five songs, “Everything,” “For You,” “Heart Around,” “Let Me Go,” and “Outshine the Stars.” Each song is slow yet passionate, featuring acoustic guitar and rock layers. Every lyric tells a story in colorful, warm tones. All in all, a night with great craft beer and Nate Grant on the mic is the perfect way to close down the week.

Guitarist John Jeffers says “Staying true to ourselves and to our music has gotten us to the point we’re at. We really want to continue on that same track.” That mantra has been reflected in the group’s music, which has progressively gotten better and better. The group’s debut album “Road of Life” was released in July of 2008. Since then, they have gone on to release two more successful albums. In 2011, the released “Firewater” which peaked at # 26 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums. The album included fan favorites like “Bar, Guitar, and a Honkytonk Crowd” and “Ballad of a Southern Man.” In 2014, they released “Early Morning Shakes.” They enlisted Dave Cobb to produce the album, who has produced for great talent such as Waylon and Shooter Jennings and Jamey Johnson. Cobb’s mastery and Whiskey Myer’s authenticity brought this album to another level. Combining southern rock, rock, and country, they knocked it out of the park. The album was wildly successful, peaking at #10 on the Billboard Top Country Albums. Included on the album was a tremendous cover of David Allen Coe’s “Need a Little Time Off for Bad Behavior.” Between albums, the group released two singles. They released “Summer 2005” in the summer of 2009 and “Home” in October of 2013. It will be worth your while to see Whiskey Myers perform live at Harry’s on February 19 at 9pm. Tickets are $10 and can be bought on Harry’s website, at Cavenders, Aggieland Outfitters, and Southern Jewlz.

Movie Reviews

Hail Caesar! (PG-13) Action & Language By Linley McCord

The Lizzie Borden Chronicles NETFLIX

By Adrianna Zampieri

As far as quirky comedies go, “Hail, Caesar!” is pretty entertaining. A Coen brothers’ film (creators of “The Men Who Stare at Goats” and “Oh Brother Where Art Thou?”) that has the usual oddities, their latest is decently funny with a strong plot, leaning more towards the goat-staring variety of humor. If you’re into that kind of underhand joking, “Hail, Caesar!” is worth the watch. The film centers around a particularly weird day for Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), a higher-up at Capitol Pictures in the mid-1960’s. He bounces from set to set, trying to put out fires and set appointments in the booming Hollywood movie business. The newest feature film, called “Hail, Caesar!” is about a Roman centurion who comes to believe in Jesus Christ. But when the main actor Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) is kidnapped by questionable people, Mannix faces some problems. There is an overwhelming number of things going on in this plot. You’ll follow several different storylines that interweave each other, all with Eddie Mannix in the center trying to fix everything. The humor is distinct in that there isn’t a lot like it, but you will definitely get some good laughs out of it. Character-wise, the film is impressive. The cast is star-studded with George Clooney, Scarlett Johannson, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and many others. All the characters are well rounded and their own individuals—all are fairly unpredictable and very convincing in their roles that range from dopey Hollywood veteran to an unfiltered glamor queen. The movie is longer and more complicated than it needs to be. While each plotline is funny in its own way, each is complex and seems—at times—unnecessary. The first thirty minutes are a tad tedious and slow as they build up to the main plot of the movie. It’s tastefully 1960’s: not so nostalgic that it’s overdone but enough for you to appreciate the culture of the time. If you don’t know that this is going to be quirky when you go in, you probably won’t like it. But if you take the goofy, offhand humor for what it is, “Hail, Caesar!” is a quality film.

Fall River, Massachusetts was the home of Lizzie Borden, the suspected murderess who took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks. Bringing the infamous legend to life, Lifetime Network produced the intriguing movie “Lizzie Borden Took An Ax,” detailing Lizzie’s horrifying crime from her moment of rage to her eventual acquittal by a jury of peers. “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles” is a continuation of the movie, Lizzie and her sister Emma attempting to move on from the dreadful event; however, a number of unfortunate situations are slowing their progress. Lizzie won’t stand for that. She’s a manipulative, assertive, and cold-blooded woman ready to take control of her life, and she won’t let anyone stand in her way. Even if that means getting her hands bloody once more. While the movie draws on known historical facts, the show adopts a purely fictional point of view, creating a path of twists and turns you’ll never expect. Leading you down this path is Christina Ricci, who flawlessly adopts the devious demeanor of the deceptively harmless Lizzie. Her innocent appearance is the perfect mask for the monster hidden inside Lizzie Borden, and she fits right in amongst the blood and death in Fall River, Massachusetts.
