Music Reviews The 1975 Album:

I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it Release Date: February 26, 2016

By Jordyn Smith

Breakout band The 1975 are back with the release of their second album “I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it” (yes that is really the title). The album kicks off with a track called “The 1975,” which serves as a great introduction to the album and sets up the 17-track album well. Rolling along, the band follows “The 1975” with the funky “Love Me,” bringing a great infusion of funk and rock. The band harnesses their uniqueness in this album, shown in “UGH,” “If I believe You,” “Lostmyhead,” and “This Must Be My Dream.” The 1975’s unique style is what has launched their career with their smooth blending of styles hooking listeners. On top of their great music, the songwriting is top-notch. Though out the album, The 1975 really showcases their talents, and these guys have big things waiting for them.

Album: This Unruly Mess I’ve Made

Album: Hello, I Must Be Going

Release Date: February 26, 2016

Release Date: February 26, 2016

Release Date: February 26, 2016

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are back with “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made.” This is their follow up to their platinum-selling, Grammy-winning, mega-hit record “The Heist.” This 13-track album features a wide variety of superstar collaborations, styles, songwriting, and beats. They enlist Ed Sheeran on “Growing Up,” Idris Elba & Anderson .Paak on “Dance Off,” and many more artists.

The legendary Phil Collins is continuing to re-release of some of his greatest work with re-release of “Hello, I Must Be Going.” The album includes tracks that have been remastered, live versions, and a combination of the two. Collins has nailed it again, bringing his classic music back to the top. For those who are long-time fans, this is a special treat. For those who may be new fans, this is a great introduction to one of the greats.

Country artist Chuck Wicks is back with “Turning Point.” Wicks has faded from the fore-front of Nashville country as an artist, but his tenacity and determination have kept him around the Music City enough to keep him relevant. His new album serves as a great turning point (all pun intended) for Wicks. The 11-track album is a wellwritten, well-produced, and well thought-out album.

“The Unruly Mess I’ve Made” shows a great progression in Macklemore’s and Ryan Lewis’ music. The entire album is full of great tracks that will have fans of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis begging for more and they have once again proved their dominance in this industry.

Remastering has been a semi-controversial subject for the greats: some are for it, some are against, and some do it and realize it has not been remastered properly. Collins, on the other hand, has perfected the remastering process. He brings great modern vibes to his classic tracks in a subtle way that elevates the tracks. For anyone who likes Phil Collins, this is worth a listen.

It kicks off with the up-beat “She’s Gone,” a great modern, Top 40 country track. Next is “Fix Me,” lyrically and stylistically, which is arguably the best track on the album. Wicks does a great job with this track with his vocals on point. Hopefully, for Wicks, this album will launch him back into the country spotlight.

Rec Class Rundown

W

ith classes, work, and studying, sometimes it’s hard to stay fit. The University makes it easier by providing low-cost and free classes for students and rec members in the community. Rec classes allow you to switch things up and keep your workout interesting, rather than stagnant running on a treadmill. You can pay $3 for each class individually, or buy a $70 pass for the entire semester. Here are just a few of the many classes the rec offers: BODY BLASTER 45 MINUTES This is a great workout for those who aren’t looking for a ton of cardio. Body blaster works to redefine your muscles in a fun, upbeat way. It includes stepping with a lot of interval strength training using weights, balls, and other fitness paraphernalia. Body blaster is a great workout to pair with a few minutes of the elliptical or treadmill. PILOXING 45 MINUTES Get ready to sweat in this high-intensity workout. Piloxing combines a lot of body movement with different punches from boxing and closes out the class with some Pilates-inspired strength training. Piloxing combines cardio and muscle toning for the perfect workout. CARDIO WATER (FREE) 1 HOUR Cardio water is great for beginners or workout fanatics. It is fun and feels like less of a workout since you are in the water. The class combines jumps and water resistance exercise to get your heart rate up and keep it up the whole hour. Working out in the water allows you to go harder and longer in your workout because gravity isn’t working against you.

CYCLE EXPRESS, CYCLE 45, AND HARD-CORE CYCLE 30 MINUTE, 45 MINUTE, AND 50 MINUTE WORKOUTS With adjustable, pace, resistance, and stance, the cycling classes at A&M’s rec are completely customizable. The classes take place with the lights out and music playing; creating a really great environment that makes you feel like you’re the only one in the room.

CORE CHALLENGE (FREE) 30 MINUTES The core challenge is great for days when you only have a couple of minutes to squeeze in a workout. The class is designed to define your stomach and back in short increments for 30 minutes. ZUMBA 45 MINUTES This workout is a great way to have fun and dance while sweating and losing calories. Zumba is just what it sounds like: fun dance moves that get your heart rate up while burning calories and toning muscles. The teachers are always upbeat, fun, and helpful when it comes to learning the moves. PILATES 1 HOUR Pilates is an amazing way to strengthen your core and body, all while de-stressing. The instructor takes you through a series of stretches and slow, controlled resistance workouts using gravity as the main equipment. Beginner moves can be made more difficult with the use of the Pilates ball. This is a great way to relax and workout! ZOOMBOX 45 MINUTES Similar to Piloxing, Zoombox combines the dance fitness from Zumba with basic boxing moves to create this fun workout. Boxing is a great exercise to strengthen your arms and core, and when combined with the extra cardio from Zumba, the class is a great all around body toning workout.

THE ROTISSERIE CHICKENS The Rotisserie Chickens is a ska band made up of a variety of talented artists, each with their own specialty that came together in a northern suburb of Dallas, TX. The band consists of previous indie folk band members, metal band artists, and then two instrumentalists that play trumpet and trombone. The diverse elements of the band make a unique sound unmatched by any other band, showing that the mixture of indie, metal and traditional instrumental music may be taking a risk, but offers an exciting and new type of music.

Black Box Speaks – currently in its second year at Texas A&M – is a unique creative writing residency program. Held over the course of six weeks, participants hone their craft in creative writing. Participants work revisions of old work, developing new work, and learn key performance strategies. The participants learn from professors, professional authors, and University Writing Center consultants. The six-week program provides one-on-one workshops to participants. Any major is eligible to apply, which adds to the uniqueness of the program. The residency program reaches far and wide. Participants are not limited to just English majors, showcasing talents from majors in Philosophy to Computer Science. The program was created by former writing center consultants, Madison Mae Parker and Emily Sturrock. They saw a need for a creative writing program that also had an emphasis on the performance aspect. The program really came to fruition under Florence Davies. Davies has worked furiously on this project, she herself is an alumni of the Texas A&M Creative Writing program. “I feel personally committed to this project because I know how much that existing program influenced me, and gave me a voice, and also a sense of community,” said Davies.

BLACK BOX SPEAKS: THE VOICE BEHIND THE WORDS

The program gets its name from the black box space they use to host their residency workshops. It is located in the new Northside Commons at Hullaballo Hall. Davies credits Dr. Craig Rotter, Assistant Director of Living Learning Programs from the Texas A&M Department of Residence Life.

By Jordyn Smith

“We really couldn’t have secured [the space] without [him],” said Davies. “He’s been really encouraging of the program since day one and also the use of the black box space.”

Along with Dr. Ritter, the program is heavily supported by the Executive Director of the University Writing Center, Dr. Valerie Balestar and the Associate Director, Dr. Candace Hastings.

or those who are interested in creative writing, listen up. On Saturday March 5 at the LaSalle Hotel in Downtown Bryan, the Texas A&M University Writing Center will be presenting Black Box Speaks. The reading will feature eight undergraduate writers from the Black Box Speaks program as well as several professional writers who instructed the undergraduates during their residency. Among the professional writers are Daniel Peña, Christian Bancroft, and Lowell Mick White – all are Texas A&M Former Students. The event is designed to shine a local spotlight on this unique program.

“Without their support, this program would simply not exist,” Davies said. All involved are looking forward to the March 5 reading at the La Salle Hotel. The Black Box Speaks event will be held in the Brazos room starting at 7pm.

WHAT YOU NEED: • Leather (or any other fabric you having lying around) • Hair bands

• Scissors • Ruler • Twist ties

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Using your ruler cut a strip of the leather that’s 15 inches in length and 1/2 inch in width. Make sure the piece you cut is the proper length and as even as possible. 2. Trim both ends so that they come to a gradual point. 3. Place the piece of leather on top of the hair band and secure them together by using the twist tie. Make sure the leather is lined up so you’re left with two equal lengths. 4. Put your hair up in a ponytail. Make sure the twist tie you secured is at the top.

LEATHER HAIR TIE Dress up an everyday ponytail or bun with a chic leather hair band. This tutorial from “cupcakes and cashmere” is easily customizable, so make them in multiple colors and patterns to mix and match with your outfits.

5. Take both ends of your leather strip and wrap them in opposite ways under the ponytail, covering up the hair band. Then tie them in a double knot above the twist tie, securing it.

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Print a design on regular printer paper. Be sure to inverse your design before printing, otherwise it will come out backwards.

PERSONALIZED TOTE BAG Tote bags: the fashionable way to haul things from Point A to Point B. This DIY from “The Crafted Life” shows you a way to customize a canvas bag to suit your personal taste. It’s a useful accessory that will never go out of style.

2. Trace over your design with the transfer pen. Make the text a different color than your pen, so you can make sure that you traced the entire design.

WHAT YOU NEED: • Canvas tote • Iron

• Paper • Iron transfer pen

3. Place design ink side down on the canvas tote and iron for 1-3 minutes. Be sure not to move your paper mid way, or your design will print twice. It also helps to have something flat inside your tote so the ink doesn’t bleed through to the otherwise. Lift your paper and you’re done!

Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic

iamonds & Dirt is the richest barrel racing event in Texas, the third richest furturity barrel racing event in the country. Sponsored by Schiller Ranch in Milican, the event benefits the K9s4Cops chairty in Houston among several local Brazos Valley charities as well. This year’s event will take place at the Brazos County Expo Center from March 7 - 13. The event is free to the public and will host special event nights as well as food, drinks, and vendors for the public in addition to the barrel racing competition. Entering its fifth year of operation, the Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic (DDBHC) is and has become one of the nation’s premier barrel horse competitions. In its inaugural year, the DDBHC purse was more than $100,000 altogether in cash and prizes. This year, the event will award almost $1,000,000 altogether. The Futurity Race and Slot Race will each award over $100,000 in cash to the winners.

pg 12 • MAROON WEEKLY • Mar. 02, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

In 2015, DDBHC boasted more than 1,200 participants in the event and expects to exceed that number again this year. The event is the largest horse competition event all year for the Brazos County Expo Center – both in size and prize dollar value. The Expo Center offers just over 550 stalls on its campus. DDBHC not only occupies each stall on site, but will also bring in portable stalls housed in the practice arena and parking lots. In comparison, the next largest event uses approximately 300 - 350 stalls. DDBHC donates its proceeds to charity. Their main benefiting charity is K9s4Cops based out of Houston, working to replace K9 officers lost in the line of duty. This year, they will also be working locally by benefitting the Children’s Museum of Brazos Valley and the area Ronald McDonald House Charity.

In order to expand their reach into the local community of spectators, they have developed several events that will take place outside the arena. They will be hosting a Chamber Business Recognition night, College Date Night and a youth day, with each offering fun activities for public participation all while enjoying the DDBHC experience. The Chamber night has a theme of All Things Texan, spotlighting chamber members along with food, beverages and wears all crafted within the local area. College Date Night will focus on recognizing the area’s college population. Upon showing their student ID, DDBHC will give each attendee an arm band valued at $10 to use towards food and drinks. On this night, they will also have a competitive stick horse relay race in the main arena. These teams will be made up of area college groups and they will have the opportunity to win money for their charity of choice. K9s4Cops will be on hand for K9 exhibitions during the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday hours of the event. The event will also host approximately 40 local area vendors who will be showcasing their goods and wares for public purchase. Local area sponsors include Kristen Distributing, the City of College Station, the City of Bryan, the BryanCollege Station CVB, Capital Farm Credit (Bryan location), Cavender’s, Texas Rose, and RV Source.

ne of the most enduring shows of all time, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is coming to College Station for two magical nights at Texas A&M’s MSC OPAS stage. The show’s national tour is directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blankenbuehler. “Joseph” will be performed on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 8 and 9 in Rudder Auditorium. Tickets range in price from $31-$105 with special prices for students. They are on sale now at MSC Box Office or MSCOPAS.org. The irresistible family musical about the trials and triumphs of Joseph, Israel’s favorite son. The first collaboration of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Cats) and lyricist Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King).

In the summer of 1967, Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.

“This new production of Joseph is an exuberant success that stays true to all of the original’s joyfulness, humor and fantastic songs while subtly updating it for a [new] audience.” pg 16 • MAROON WEEKLY • Mar. 02, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

- The Cleveland Plain Dealer

Webber immediately approached Rice, his friend, to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007’s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph. The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith. After the successes of “Joseph,” Webber and Rice then went on to write “Jesus Christ Superstar.” It was the success of “Jesus Christ Superstar” that enabled “Joseph” to continue to grow. The album of “Jesus Christ Superstar” was a massive success in America and when “Joseph” was released there, with a marketing campaign implying it was the follow-up to “Superstar,” the “Joseph” album stayed in the charts for three months. After the nationwide success, the production of “Joseph” was finally moved to Broadway in January 1982. From there, the rest is history.

Race

Fuller House

(PG-13)

NETFLIX

By Linley McCord

By Adrianna Zampieri

With the 2016 Summer Olympics coming this August in Rio de Janeiro, it’s fitting that Hollywood produces a film centering on the Olympics. “Race” is the inspirational story of Jesse Owens, an African American track star bent on racing in Germany in the 1936 Olympics. It’s filled with drama around the social issues of a segregated United States coupled with Hitler’s rise to power in Germany. The name of the movie is twofold: focusing both on the track race Jesse Owens (Stephan James) is intent on winning on the world’s stage, as well as the issue of race on a global scale. It balances both well when it deals with tense social issues surrounding an African American man competing for a country that does not allow him to go in certain restaurants in his own country. And add all that pressure to a trip to Germany on the brink of WWII where Hitler is trying to install his Aryan regime. Obviously, Owens makes it to the Olympics, but it’s not without great trial. The NAACP requests that he not go so it does not seem that he’s supporting the US attending the Olympics held by Hitler. On the other hand, it would be huge if he did in fact go to prove to the US that he is someone who can represent Americans well. The plot is intense and watchers will be sucked in almost immediately with the excitement and suspense of social issues when the world is watching. Owens’ character is both someone you want to cheer for and someone who will break your heart. Being faced with fame—both good and bad—and the chance to do something amazing wears on him and, like anyone, he cracks under the pressure at times. But the constant encouragement (and tough love) from his coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudikeis) propels Owens to greatness. Their dynamic makes the movie so strong and compelling. While it may not be entirely historically accurate, it does depict a struggling Germany, global dynamics, and the problem of racism well. “Race” gets 8/10 stars and will be loved by anyone looking for a good sports or history story.

When the first notes of the “Full House” theme song starts to play at the beginning of “Fuller House,” it’s a rush of nostalgia. From its debut in 1987 to its conclusion in 1995, “Full House” captured the hearts of families all across America. Now it’s time for the next generation to shine. The Tanner sisters have all grown up. D.J. is a single mother of three. Stephanie travels the world as a DJ, and Michelle is off running her fashion empire in New York (unfortunately, Mary-Kate and Ashley do not make an appearance). The eccentric best friend Kimmy Gibbler returns with her signature dramatic entrance, and together with Stephanie, moves into the Tanner home to help D.J. take care of her three young boys. Sound familiar? The sequel is filled with touching moments reminiscent of the original seasons that will have you taking a stroll down memory lane. It’s a new generation of family meetings, group hugs, and life lessons. And of course it wouldn’t be complete without an adorable golden retriever, Cosmo. Although “Fuller House” does appeal to your sense of nostalgia, it’s not quite as charismatic as the original. It’s corny and perhaps a bit too cheesy. There are innuendos and other behavior that’s a tad too racy to be considered a family-friendly show like the original. But if you’re watching “Fuller House” to see your favorite characters return to the screen rather than focusing on the content, you’re as golden as Cosmo. Otherwise, you might be disappointed.
