Music Reviews Weezer

Album:

By Jordyn Smith

The guys from Weezer are back with their new album “Weezer (White Album). The album’s 10 tracks bring a variety of memorable characters and the colorful mess of people shows Weezer’s authenticity. The album kicks off with “California Kids,” a track about a rat pack of heroic slackers.

Weezer (White Album)

Lukas Graham Album: Lukas Graham Release Date: April 1, 2016 A new release this week that is making waves is “Southern Family.” This album, produced by the great Dave Cobb, is a superb concept album. Included on the album is an eclectic mix of artist and songwriters, such as well-known artists like Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, and Jamey Johnson who lent their talents to several tracks. Additionally, some lesser-known singer/ songwriters are on this album as well. Brent Cobb, cousin of Dave Cobb, collaborated with his cousin to write and produce the album. Newcomer Brandy Clark sings the emotional highlight of the album in “I Cried.” She brings a great classic country vibe and sound to the album. The individual talents of each artist are showcased by Dave Cobb’s abilities as a producer. The meticulous care that was put into each song shows us why Dave Cobb has achieved the status he has.

The lyrics drive the track as much as the drums, a testament to the fact that Weezer has always provided fans with a refreshing take on music. Their unique styles are brought out Release Date: in “Wind In Our Sail,” “(Girl We Got A) Good Thing,” and “Jacked Up,” and cranks it up a notch April 1, 2016 with “L.A Girlz.” As the album progresses, we see the maturity of Weezer’s music. These guys still have it going on.

Various Artists

Album: I Saw the Light (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Release Date: March 25, 2016

Ahead of the much-anticipated movie “I Saw the Light,” a movie about the life of country legend Hank Williams, you can check out the soundtrack for a taste of the action. The film stars British heartthrob Tom Hiddleston in a role very different than his Marvel depiction of Loki. Hiddleston’s British accent is nowhere to be heard in the soundtrack and brings Hank William’s to life with his rich vocals. Throughout the 13-song soundtrack, Tom Hiddleston, Jo Stafford, The Delmore Brothers, Eartha Kitt, George Morgan, and Emmett Miller resurrect Hank Williams. The mix of classic tracks from this star-studded cast brings the authenticity of the movie through. Hiddleston’s versions of Hank Williams are solid from “Hey Good Lookin’” to “Honky Tonkin’.” He has really done a great job capturing William’s essence, which makes “I Saw the Light” a mustsee to put the story behind the music.

Explosions in the Sky Album: Letting You In Release Date: April 1, 2016 The Indie band Explosions in the Sky is back with their new album “The Wilderness.” Explosions in the Sky has been around for a while, their latest work before their recent album was a collaboration with Steve Jablonsky to create the soundtrack for the movie “Lone Survivor.” In their new album “The Wilderness,” the eclectic group brings new sounds and vibes and explores different depths of their music. The title track has a laid-back vibe accentuated with techno beats and is balanced by the piano and guitar. As the album flows, the band uses a mix of build-ups and break-downs to add layers to the songs. Without the use of lyrics, this band is able to convey their music in a distinctly different way.

STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT

D

o you enjoy making wishes on stars? Then make a wish on the first star you see at the Mitchell Institute Star Party on April 6. Hosted by the Texas A&M University Astronomy Group, peer through a telescope to gaze at the wonders of the universe from 8 – 10 p.m. at the Simpson Drill Field Review Stand. It’s an opportunity to observe the cosmos with fellow star enthusiasts at no cost, and it’s open to both students and the public. From the famous Italian scientist Galileo Galilei who laid the foundation for modern astronomy in the early 1700s to the historical moment of Viking 1 being the first launcher to successfully land on Mars in 1976, the stars, the planets, and the universe have fascinated humans for centuries. Bring the marvel of space into your own home with a few DIY projects. GALAXY SLIME Hold the galaxy in your hands with this tutorial from “Twodaloo.” With this colorful, sparkly slime, you can squish the universe between your fingers, jumble up constellations, and realign the planets. It’s a captivating sensory toy for young children to enjoy under supervision, or keep it for a day when adulting is hard and you need to release some stress. WHAT YOU NEED: • 1 bottle of Elmer’s Clear School Glue (5 oz) • 1/2 – 3/4 cup Sta-Flo Liquid Starch

• Liquid watercolors • Fine glitter in a variety of colors

HOW TO DO IT: 1. So here’s the skinny on slime-making…you gotta take it slow. You’ll want to put your glue into a bowl first. 2. Then add the liquid watercolors and glitter of your choosing into the bowl. Mix well. 3. Now you can start adding your starch, but only add it in small increments at a time, stirring well to mix after each one to incorporate your starch fully. 4. After the first couple of additions, you’ll need to use your hands to knead the starch in, just like you are making bread dough. 5. Continue to add a little bit of starch at a time and do a “stretch test” after each increment is kneaded in. Once your slime is the consistency you prefer, don’t add any more starch. 6. Congratulations! You’ve just created your very own galaxy. Have you ever seen a more gorgeous bubble of slime?

CONSTELLATION ART Ursa Major, Orion, and Pegasus are all clusters of stars that come to mind when you think of constellations. “Wear The Canvas” transferred the beauty of these clusters to the walls of her home with only a few simple steps that you can follow to create art inspired by your favorite constellation, whether it corresponds with your Zodiac sign or includes the brightest star visible from Earth. WHAT YOU NEED: • Canvas • Black and gold paint • Paint brushes • Gold cardstock • Glue

are happy with their placement, mark a dot on the canvas with a pencil so you know where they go in case your stars accidentally shift or get knock off the canvas. 7. After the marks are made, glue the stars on the canvas one by one. 8. When the glue has dried, use a small, fine tipped paintbrush to connect the stars with gold paint. Use painters tape to help you create smooth, clean lines.

• Pencil • Star template • Scissors • Painters tape

HOW TO DO IT: 1. Buy a canvas, any size of your choice, and paint it black. 2. Find a star template online. You will need at least two different sizes of stars to correspond with your constellation since stars within a constellation are different sizes. Print them and cut them out. 3. Trace the stars onto the back of your gold cardstock. The number you will need depends on what constellation you have chosen. 4. Then cut out the stars. 5. If desired, glue one star on top of another one, forming a 10-pointed star, or leave your star with just five points. 6. Lay out the stars onto your canvas to form your constellation. When you

ocal boy Clayton Gardner is back at The Tap on April 9. Gardner, hailing from Fort Worth, has been a mainstay in the local music scene for several years now. It all began in his dorm room at Texas A&M when Clayton picked up a guitar and found his talent. He gives credit to the great George Strait and Keith Whitley as his musical inspirations. This talented singer-songwriter has come a long way in the time that he has been on the Texas music scene.

CLAYTON GARDNER @ THE TAP

By Jordyn Smith

Early on, Gardner had the opportunity to co-write with many Texas country greats including Pat Green, Jack Ingram, Aaron Watson, and many more. These collaborations with his peers helped shape his music into something that would leave a legacy. He learned from them and began to focus on making his music better and better, motivating him to reach new musical heights. In the short time he’s been on the music scene, he has made a significant impact. Gardner has played all over the state at various music venues, bars, and clubs, and his talents have led him outside the state of Texas as well. Notably, Gardner played at the 2014 CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee. Gardner made his debut in 2012 with the release of his first EP “Here to Stay.” The EP produced two Top 20 spots on iTunes with “Settle Down” and “Happy Ending.” Clayton’s first album “Lucky 7” was released in October of 2013 and the 11-track album, produced by Grammy-winning producer Mack Damon, landed in the iTunes Top 20 Country albums chart. Included on “Lucky 7” is fan-favorite “Table for Two,” which has since gone on to become a weddingfavorite for many. In 2015, Gardner released “Under the Lights,” his most complete work yet. The album reflects a steady progression of Gardner’s music and style. This single “Buy You a Drink” cracked the top 10 in Texas radio. The track “Don’t Miss It,” the lead-off single, serves as a reminder to take your shot, because you only have one. Be sure to get out to The Tap on April 9 at 10pm to see Clayton Gardner, you won’t want to miss it.

T

his dirt path, worn thin from thousands of footsteps, wants to tell us a story. It is a story of men and women and boys and girls who work harder than we can imagine. It is a story of large buckets of water on heads, suffocating sweat on brows, and back breaking labor that never seems to end. It is a story of poverty. Vicious, soul crushing, cyclical, take no prisoners poverty. This path, like much of life, is filled with painful irony and powerful juxtaposition. It is on this path that the people journey to their life source: the lake, where water abounds. And it is on this path that the people journey to the source of their figurative death: the lake, where dreams, and sometimes even people, go to die. But this day is different. Today, today the path tells a new story. You can see it in the smiles on their faces. You can hear it in the clapping and music that floats through the air. You can feel it in the small hand that clings tightly to hope. Today is different. Today, Francis, Comfort, Nice, Winfred, Patience, Kwabena, Amelenyor, a second Francis and a second Nice will walk this worn and tired path for the last time. Today, the path will take them to places they haven’t been in a long time. Today, the path will take them home. Literally. But this is the end of the journey. To really understand how far these feet have come, we need to start all the way back at the beginning. In Ghana, Africa, thousands of children from impoverished families with little food and even less hope are trafficked into the fishing industry where they are forced to work, day after day, on fishing boats. These children have no future—they cannot imagine a world in which they will not have to labor under the merciless sun. Sadly, life is nearly as dire for the men and women who buy them and make them work. Many of these men and women were actually trafficked children themselves. Fisher boys and girls who grew up but couldn’t outgrow the only way they knew how to work and make a living. So here they are, repeating the vicious cycle again. And again. And again.

MERCY PRJOECT IN BCS By Chris Field, Founder & Executive Director, Mercy Project

Mercy Project, a Bryan/College Station based non-profit, walked into Ghana five and a half years ago with the bold and audacious dream of ending child trafficking there forever. Our mission is to rescue children from slavery. We partner with families and communities trapped in the cycle of poverty, empowering them with sustainable economic solutions in order to free children from forced labor. In practical terms, this means we teach them a new and better way to fish (called aquaculture) which effectively replaces the need for the labor of the children. We are literally teaching men how to fish. In doing so, we are helping them experience newfound economic freedom. What about the kids? We are able to reintegrate them back into their families where they can begin attending school and start dreaming about what they want to be when they grow up.

Our fourth village partnership and child rescue took place just a few days ago. Those nine children whose names you read above make a total of 67 children Mercy Project has now rescued and reintegrated. 67 children who now walk dirt roads to school every day instead of dirt paths to a dangerous and futureless lake. But the story, and that dirt path, continues for many other children and families in Ghana. Our work has just begun, and there are thousands more children and hundreds more fishing villages who need our help. So together we say “yes.” We say “yes” to freedom and hope and new life. We say “yes” to new paths that lead to joy and laughter and peace. Opportunities abound for you to say “yes” with us. Just here in Bryan/College Station we host numerous local events throughout the year. These include a casino night, a Guinness World Record event. a mommy/son dig day, and more. We also started the BCS Marathon Race Series, which hosts races throughout the year, as a way to raise funds for our work. So you can attend an event, donate, volunteer, run a race, or even just spread the word. All of these are important “yes’s” on the journey to more freedom. Wherever your path may lead, we hope you will say yes, too. Because the world is changed forever when our desire to take risks and make a difference outgrows our fear of failure. So walk on, friends, walk on. The world needs us all to be more brave.

CHASE GASSAWAY & DBQ BBQ - APRIL 8

At only 29 years old, singer-songwriter Chase Gassaway has more musical experience than most artists twice his age. A lifelong Texan, Gassaway has created works for a wide range of groups from choirs to full orchestras, as well as composing the score to short film Take Two. He is also a talented vocalist and plays a large variety of instruments from guitar to reed organ. Gassaway’s experience as a solo performer and member of groups, such as Canaries in the Coal Mine and the Matchmaker Band, has resulted in a unique multi-textured pop sound he calls his own. Instead of categorizing his music into Americana, folk, or alter-native categories, Gassaway prefers to seek diversity and eclecticism. HIs music is unique and will be appreciated by all categories of music lovers. So come out April 8th to enjoy the uncommon talents of Chase Gassaway.

Brice Woolard Band - April 9 The following day, April 9, enjoy a performance from the Brice Woolard Band, based right here in College Station, TX. With a “Nashiville, Texas country” vibe, what started out as a two-man gig, playing small shows around town, soon turned into The Brice Woolard Band.

THIS WEEKEND @ NEW REPUBLIC BREWERY By Hannah Hardwick

Music has been a part of Brice Woolard’s life since he was a kid. He started singing when he was only five years old, and started learning to play his grandma’s old fender acoustic when he was 14. Woolard is a self-taught artist, and hopes to be recognized as a great songwriter/guitar player. About two years ago he met Issac, the bands lead gui-tarist, and they started to travel around College Station, playing small shows wherever they could and they quickly formed a full band. Their musical background is based in metal & rock, which gives the traditional county sound a rougher edge. Come out on April 9th and enjoy some music from The Brice Woolard Band.

“What class are you, Ag?”

T

his is a question many Texas A&M alums get on a regular basis, whether you’re at a restaurant, in line at the grocery, or in a different country—everyone knows that being an Aggie is being part of a family and wearing that piece of gold is our way of telling the world who we belong to. Being an Aggie is being proud of where you came from. Each ring day, hundreds of students get to become a part of that outward pride and receive their own little band of security that says, “Hey, I’m an Aggie.” The history of the Aggie ring is a long and honored one. The first known Aggie ring was made in 1889, thirteen years after the opening of Texas A&M College. In the years following its inception, the Aggie ring sold for about $10.50 each. Little by little, the design evolved into what it is today: an eagle protected by a shield of thirteen stripes and five stars. Each element on the ring tells a different piece of what it means to fully encompass the spirit of the 12th man. Whether it’s the patriotism of the stripes, the stars atop the shield, or the eagle that represents the limitless heights that Aggies can attain with their instilled knowledge and support of their Aggie family, it’s arguable that the amount of pride pumping through every maroon-clad heart on ring day is superior to even that on graduation day. When you’re wearing your ring, it’s more than just a pretty piece of gold. Instead, it is years of history, honor, and tradition that every Texas A&M student has the privilege of being a part of. If you’re getting your ring this weekend, congratulations, if you already have it, wear it with pride, and finally, if you are still working toward it, remember what you’re working for. For more history on this time-honored tradition, visit Aggienetwork.com.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (PG-13)

By Linley McCord The first of 2016’s superhero showdowns began with DC’s most iconic heroes: Batman and Superman. DC came busting out of the gate with “Man of Steel,” an average film at best. But the battle between Metropolis and Gotham had more impressive everything than its sole predecessor. The film opens at the end of the battle from “Man of Steel” as we see philanthropist billionaire Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) rescuing his employees from the rubble of one of his destroyed buildings. His contemptuous glare to the sky at Superman is the foundation of the story. Superman (Henry Cavill) is just as fed up with Batman because of his archaic ways of handling criminals. This would be the “v” in the film’s title. The movie jumps right into the action, assuming viewers already know the backstory of both heroes. Throw in Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), a grudge match, some kryptonite, a few terrorists, some trippy dreams, allusions of heroes to come, a monster destroying a city, and that’s the gist of the film. It’s complex but not too hard to follow and ends with a bang that will definitely leave you hanging. The two major complaints against it are the bizarre and disorienting flashback dreams Bruce Wayne has and the way Batman and Superman become partners instead of enemies. While no spoilers on those things will be revealed here, those two aspects of the film are disappointing and anticlimactic. Arguably, the best part of the movie were the characters. Affleck kills it as an older Bruce Wayne, jaded by the pain of his city and haunted by his past. Cavill, of course, is the perfect Clark Kent/Superman with his need to be needed. Eisenberg was remarkably reminiscent of Heath Ledger’s Joker—an eerie brilliance and insanity. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) stole the movie—her backstory and feminity mixed with incredible fighting skills makes her a force to be reckoned with in future films. DC did decently well with this one, but here’s to hoping it will only go uphill from here.

The Ranch NETFLIX

By Adrianna Zampieri It’s fitting that Netflix’s new original series “The Ranch” debuted on April 1st. Otherwise known as April Fool’s Day, April 1st is a holiday meant for humor, and this western-based sitcom is a bad joke. Wannabe pro-football player Colt Bennett returns home to tryout for a local team but stays to help his father Beau and brother Rooster run the struggling ranch. He attempts to mend the broken relationship with his father, learns responsibility, and evolves from a 34-year-old child into a functioning adult. With a leading cast of big-name actors such as Sam Elliott, known for his Western roles as the classic American cowboy, Debra Winger, three time Academy Award nominated actress, and of course Danny Masterson and Ashton Kutcher from “That ‘70s Show,” you’d think “The Ranch” would be a hit, but there’s only so much actors can do when the script is a letdown. The majority of jokes fall flat, only a few landing when delivered by Elliott and his signature caterpillar mustache in a deadpan manner (which is also the only reason you should watch this train wreck). Not to mention, you can only hear the recorded laugh track so many times before it starts to echo in your ears. Unlike previous Netflix originals, “The Ranch” is certainly not worthy of binge watching.
