Ben Rector Album: Brand New
Release Date: August 28, 2015
By Jordyn Smith
Ben Rector hits the nail on the head with his new album, “Brand New.” The typical Rector mix of upbeat songs—the title track is a good example—with more somber tracks like “Make Something Beautiful” help Rector develop a complete sound for the record. With tracks that encourage self-reflection, living in the moment, and falling in love, Rector has assembled an album that connects with anyone. “Note to Self” reminds us to always be individuals rather than trying to please everyone else. In today’s age, it is so hard to live in the moment something that Rector preaches on in the track “Like the World Is Going to End. Overall, Rector does a superb job with these fan-pleasing ensemble.
Rising country duet Maddie and Tae have released their first full-length album, “Start Here.” The girls have stirred the pot with their controversial hit “Girl In A Country Song.” This girlpower anthem took major jabs at the “brocountry” stereotypes that have recently dominated the country format. “Girl In A Country Song” has led the way for change in modern country, helping bring back a more classy portrayal of women to the world of country music. While the radio smash has been the album’s biggest hit (so far) it is not the only shiningstar on the record. From “Fly” to the twangytrack “Shut Up and Finish,” to “After the Storm Blows Through,” Maddie and Tae display their wideranges and exceptional harmonizing abilities on this inaugural release.
Iration takes a reggae style and makes it their own in “Hotting Up,” an album that provides a great island escape for anyone who’s in the need for it. The title track “Hotting Up” sets the tone for the album by infusing pop and rock sounds with catchy hooks all mixed in with classic reggae rhythms. The track “Reelin’” highlights the hints of the pop and rock sounds that are embedded in this album. “867” sounds more appropriate for a club versus a classic reggae track, but Iration makes it work exceptionally well. The eclectic mixing of styles that they bring forth helps set “Hotting Up” apart from other albums released this week.
R&B singer Andra Day’s newest release “Cheers To The Fall” showcases her wonderful vocal range and brings some serious soul to this week’s music releases. The title track’s funky rhythms along with Day’s incredible range is just one of many refreshing aspects to this album. “Honey or Fire” is one of the few upbeat tracks you’ll find on the record, delivering not only a great vocal performance but a solid music accompaniment with excellent piano riffs. “Let Go Of My Hand” stylistically resembles classic 50’s rock & roll ballads, with a solid bassline, twangy guitar, and classic harmonies, a proverbial hit released 60 years late. Overall an excellent album for any R&B fan.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: VOICEPLAY By Madison Matous
OPAS opens their “Positively Enchanting” season with the a cappella group VoicePlay. VoicePlay made its national debut on the hit show “The Sing-Off,” but their journey didn’t end there. The group has become an internationally-acclaimed touring sensation, and it’s easy to see why. VoicePlay will not only amaze with their musical talent, but with their humor. We got a chance to catch up with Geoff Castellucci, the “bass” man of the group.
MW: How long have you been performing together? What unique things do each of you bring to the group? VP: Believe it or not, VoicePlay has been around since 2001, but this cast has been singing together since 2012. Each member of the cast brings a little something unique to the table. Clearly we all have different voices and skills, but I bet you didn’t know that Layne (our drummer) has a closet full of My Little Ponies, did you?
pg 6 • MAROON WEEKLY • Sept. 9, 2015 • maroonweekly.com
MW: What was it like to be on the show “The SingOff”? What are some favorite memories from that experience? VP: We certainly had some high points and low points on “The Sing-Off”, but we wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. The sheer amount of hard work and sleepless nights that go into creating a show like that just can’t be explained adequately in ink, but when I say 15-17 hour days every day for weeks and
MW: You guys seem to have quite the relationship with “the Mouse,” can we expect any Disney songs to be performed during the show? VP: Living in Orlando certainly affords us a unique opportunity to make some magic and yes, you can absolutely expect a little pixie dust at the show. MW: You obviously have a lot of fun together, how does this silliness come to life in the show? VP: In too many ways to describe. Let’s just say, a VoicePlay performance isn’t just a “Stand-and-sing-at-you” experience. We want you to have FUN and if you have to throw giant marshmallows at us to make that happen, then that’s what we’re going to do. MW: Can you give us a hint as to what surprises you might have in store for Aggieland? VP: Shhhhh…It’s an Aca-Secret. Geoff Castellucci was born in Alexandria, VA and with well over 10,000 professional a cappella performances to his credit, has been singing since he can remember. His earliest musical memories are of playing the piano at his grandfather’s house in upstate NY when he was just five years old and break-dancing for home-movies. Recognizing musical talent and terrible dance skills, Geoff’s parents enrolled him classical and jazz piano training. From that doorway to music, Geoff branched out to vocals and guitar, but still loves to play the keys. Geoff got his first taste of a cappella through singing in the middle school choir, but didn’t really develop as a “bass man” until high school when he co-founded VoicePlay (then 42Five) with Layne, Earl, and former members Scott Porter (yes, THAT Scott Porter) and Michael Kilgore.

weeks, I’m serious. There are way too many favorite moments to share, but I think seeing Home Free crowned the champions of Season 4 was way up there. Those guys are just the best and it was great to see them win it all.

7:00 PM Rudder Theatre
Although Geoff’s first love was music, he married his second in the summer of 2007 and enjoys nothing more than spending time at home with his beautiful and talented wife Kathy— Although she sometimes takes a back seat to his other loves which include an unhealthy addiction to Twinkies, Diet Coke, Alton Brown, Starbucks coffee, South Park, William Shatner, and anything with an Apple logo on it. The brainchild behind many of VoicePlay’s onstage antics, Geoff finds his creative outlet in penning arrangements for the act and coming up with new and innovative ways to embarrass the cast on stage. When not working with VoicePlay, Geoff can be seen making the rounds at Orlando area theme parks, including a very rumbly Frankenstein and Elwood Blues at Universal Studios Florida. The guys can be seen in Rudder Auditorium on Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 pm. This is their only performance in Aggieland, so make sure to get your tickets early, because you won’t want to miss this. Tickets run from $15-$45, with special prices for all area students, and can be purchased through the MSC Box Office or on their website www.MSCOPAS.org.

On Sunday nights, the Revolution Café and Bar turns into a hot spot for spokenword artists. What once started as a small group that got together to share poetry, has turned into a major event boasting a full house of around 50 to 70 people every Sunday. Mic Check started back in 2005, and in 2010 became a non-profit organization hosting open mic, slam poetry events and the Texas Grand Slam Poetry Festival, which brings in poets from all across Texas. Every Sunday, they have open mic where poets, songwriters and actors are given the chance to sign up and perform original work, or cover a favorite piece. Every second Sunday of the month, they host a poetry slam, which focuses specifically on poetry. Three people are randomly selected from the audience to judge, and participants go through three elimination rounds where one person will emerge as the winner. The organization is open to anyone who wants to come out and showcase their work, or just want to check out the scene. Mic Check will host their fifth annual Texas Grand Slam Poetry Festival October 9-10. This year’s lineup will feature approximately 42 poetic competitors and a $1200 Grand Prize.

Curtis Grimes @ Hurricane Harry’s By Jordyn Smith TexasCountry star Curtis Grimes is set to return to BCS on September 11 at Hurricane Harry’s.
opening gig for Chesney helped propel Grimes’ career forward and he began to place himself in front of massive audiences.
Grimes. A Texasnative hailing from Gilmer, Grimes will kick off his run of shows in BCS to coincide with his release of his new EP “Bottom of the Fifth.” This show will also serve as his CD Release party. Make sure to take your ticket to the merchandise table and get your free copy of “Bottom of the Fifth!”
Three years later, in 2011, Grimes was fortunate to receive an invitation to audition for the NBC hit show “The Voice” in Los Angeles. While he did not particularly impress Blake Shelton with his rendition of Shelton’s hit “Hillbilly Bone,” he did strike an interest in another judge. Cee Lo Green saw something special in him and selected Grimes for his team where he would advance to the quarterfinals before being eliminated. This provided even more exposure for Grimes, “The Voice” averaged 15 million viewers weekly.
Grimes is consistently striving to put himself in front of the country music elite. In 2008, country “King of the Road” Kenny Chesney launched his Poets and Pirates tour. For that particular tour, Chesney ran a contest called “The Next Big Star.” It was a competition for local bands to compete against each other in order to win an opening slot for a Chesney show. Grimes won the Austin competition and opened for Kenny Chesney at the Frank Erwin Center in May 2008. Landing this
Since winning “The Next Big Star” competition and competing on “The Voice,” Grimes has had the opportunity to open for many Texas Country greats like Jack Ingram, Eli Young Band, Aaron Watson, and many more. It has also given him the chance to expand his fan-base and play shows outside of Texas. This had led to a few instances where he’s been invited to open for Nashville country artists like Justin Moore
and Leann Rimes. Before he found success in music, Grimes was a star pitcher at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. It was when he transferred to Texas State in 2005 that he began to realize his dream of becoming a country musician. The San Marcos music scene had a lasting impression on Grimes and he has since found great success in the Texas music scene. Grimes’ other musical influences range from country superstars George Strait and Alan Jackson, to Chris Young and Texasnative Clay Walker. The opening act for Grimes will be the group Prophets and Outlaws. They will bring their Southernrock style infused with a little bit of soul and blues to the Harry’s stage. They are nice contrast to Grimes’ vibe. The Prophets and Outlaws released their EP “Texas Home” back in May. Doors at Harry’s open at 9 pm on Friday September, 11th. Football season is well underway in Aggieland and women of all ages are flocking to local boutiques and hair salons to get the perfect look for Aggie game day. In a semi-small town like Bryan/College Station, it’s hard to find good trustworthy places to get your hair done for these special occasions. Lucky for us, the first blow dry bar in the BCS area has opened up on September 4—North Hair Design Studio & Spa. Now what is a blow dry bar you might ask? A blow dry bar’s sole purpose is to style hair while leaving the job of cut and color for regular salons. North’s blow dry bar hair menu will include general and specific hairstyles including ones called “Gig’em,” “Hullabaloo,” “Whoop,” and many others especially made for Aggie girls. North’s blow dry bar aims to mix the fun of tailgating with the glamour that comes with dressing up for an Aggie football game. In thirty minutes or less, customers can have wonderful game day looks for a very affordable price. Not only does North’s blow dry bar want you to leave looking flawless, they also want to educate their clients on how to conquer different types of hairstyles at home with the right products that match your hair type and style. North’s blow dry bar aims to help women feel confident in their hair style, not only on the day of your appointment, but everyday. While standing during games for four to five hours in the Texas heat, it can be hard to find the motivation to look good all day while feeling comfortable the entire time. North’s Hair Design Studio & Spa gives you the opportunity to look and feel great at a game without your hair falling flat during the first yell. North’s blow dry bar gives us the chance to enjoy the game we all know and love in hairstyles we just might love a little bit more.

Revamp Your Tailgate By Adrianna Zampieri
Football season is well upon us, Ags. Put on your game face, and get ready to party. The new and improved Kyle Field is reopening its doors for the Aggies’ home-opener against the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday, September 12. In celebration, Texas A&M is hosting the “world’s largest tailgate,” showcasing Grammy-nominated talent and providing a dazzling exhibition of fireworks along with a historic First Yell. Although the average person may not have the means to throw such an elaborate tailgate party, you can still score big among your friends if you consider the following:
THE FOOD
Every Texan should know how to fire the grill. It’s instinct, and the meat is unquestionably the hero of a tailgate party. A juicy hamburger with the all the works hits the spot, but every hero needs a sidekick. For example, jalapeño poppers, a delectable combination of crispy and creamy, are a perfect accompaniment to any main course. All you need are jalapeños, cream cheese, and bacon. It’s sure to be a hi—need we say more? 1. Select your desired amount of jalapenos, and cut them in half while removing the seeds. (It’s smart to soak these in milk for a couple hours to pull some of the heat out) 2. Fill the jalapeño halves with as much cream cheese as you would like. 3. Slice bacon strips in half. Then wrap them around the cream cheese filled jalapeños and secure with a toothpick. 4. Preheat your lightly-oiled grill to a medium heat 5. Place your jalapeño poppers on the grill and cook until the bacon has browned and the peppers are hot to your liking, about 30 minutes. 6. Serve warm.
THE DECOR
Tailgating isn’t just about the food, atmosphere plays a big part in the party and decorations can help set the mood. To get your Aggie loyals fired up, you need to garnish the event in A&M decor. Serve food on Aggie plates, put out themed tablecloths, paint your cooler in a maroon and white design, even hang a banner from one side of your canopy tent to the other. 1. Create a cardstock triangle template as small or as large as you would like. 2. Using the template, cut out as many burlap pennants as you need. For example, if you want to spell out “Aggies,” you will need six burlap pennants. 3. Use mod podge to seal the frayed edges of your pennants. 4. Decorate each of your pennants how you would like, and allow for any paint or glue you may have used to dry. 5. Turn your pennants over and place them in order from right to left. 6. Using a hot glue gun, glue twine to the burlap pennant by folding the top edge over. Make sure to leave space between each pennant and leave extra string on both sides of the banner. If you don’t have the time to make your own banner, then you can purchase a pre-made burlap pennant garland at Hobby Lobby that you can decorate.
pg 14 • MAROON WEEKLY • Sept. 9, 2015 • maroonweekly.com
THE CLOTHING
Everything about tailgating screams school spirit, and as the host of a tailgate party, you need to look the part. You can purchase your Aggie gear from local stores like Aggieland Outfitters and Maroon U. Ladies can finish off their outfit with a dash of decorative jewelry. But rather than buying some, why not go the extra mile and make your own? Points for originality, right? Transform some old bangles into a cute accessory that matches your game day outfit. 1. Purchase embroidery floss or silk thread in Aggie colors. 2. Apply a dot of E-6000 craft glue, which can be bought at Hobby Lobby, on the inside of your bangle. 3. Begin to wrap your thread around the bangle, starting at the area where you put the glue. 4. Continue wrapping your bangle until about there is about a centimeter left. Then apply another dot of glue to the inside of the bangle. 5. Finish wrapping your bangle and let dry. 6. As evidenced by the photo, you can also do this with many other colors to match many more outfits.

Fight for your Fitness By Annabeth Reeb
Since the emergence of the UFC craze, men have increasingly relied on boxing and MMA-style workouts as new routes to finding peak levels of fitness. However, since Victoria’s Secret models divulged boxing as their workout of choice, gyms have been popping up everywhere with a new-founded interest in the sport by women. Boxing is especially great for former high school athletes that relied on sports to keep them fit. Boxing feels less like a workout and more like a sport. There are multiple boxing/kickboxing choices in College Station, and we were able to try a few out. TITLE Boxing Club: TITLE boxing packs a high-intensity workout into one hour. You alternate punching the bag with other cardio exercises, such as running and jumping. If you’re looking to burn calories and leave feeling fulfilled, TITLE is great. They focus more on exercise and less on actual boxing, which is nice for people new to the sport because there’s no learning curve. TITLE takes the idea of boxing and turns it into a fun, high intensity workout. Another plus, their clubs are opening all over the nation, so you can bring your membership home with you. 9Rounds: 9 Rounds is different than other exercise-class businesses in one very

When you want to work out you simply arrive at the 9rounds gym, scan your membership card, and jump into your first round. The 30-minute workout is exactly what the name suggests, nine rounds of different boxing and kickboxing stations. In between stations the trainers lead a 30 second group exercise, and then it is on to the next round. At least 3 trainers are walking around helping you with each exercise, which gives you a little more insight into the actual technique of the sport.

Both of these gyms are convenient, fun, and high-energy. Boxing is an amazing way to stay fit because the training involved is designed to keep boxers in the ring for extended periods of time. Thank You Mr. President By Madison Matous
The Forsyth Gallery will be showcasing a new exhibit titled “Thank you Mr. President: Gifts of Appreciation from the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum” on September 16th. The exhibit will feature gifts given to President George H.W. Bush, during and after his time in office, including a bowl given to him on his inauguration. The idea came about when collaborating with the Bush Library to see if there was any decorative art or glass they would be open to lend to the exhibit to go with pieces from the Forsyth Gallery’s famous art glass collection. It was then discovered that a lot of the pieces they had were actually given to the president—mainly by foreign dignitaries— and the idea for “Thank you Mr. President,” was born. When a president is in office, they are showered with gifts, some personal and some he accepts on behalf of the nation. These items go into a high-security, climate-controlled storage facility and are cataloged. Then over the course of the years, the National Archive administration will research the objects and they will decide where they should go, whether it be kept by the president, in the White House, or put in the presidential library and museum. Having all of these items put on display at once is not something that happens often. So, go check out a unique part of America’s history before the exhibit closes on December 18th.

Sleepy Hollow
No Escape Action/Thriller (R) By Linley McCord
Going to the movies wouldn’t be the same if there wasn’t an option for an action-thriller somewhere in the lineup, “No Escape” fills that role for movie-goers at the moment. With fast-paced and tense action sequences, the plot itself leaves something to be desired, but you’ll be too preoccupied with not falling off the edge of your seat to really notice. Word to the wise: take deep, calming breaths before entering the theater. Jack Dwyer (Owen Wilson) stars as the All-American dad who moves with his wife and daughters to a country in Southeast Asia to work for a water company. But things quickly go awry—we’re talking within the first 10 minutes—as leaders in the country believe that the company is trying to take over their land. An intense coup ensues as the family tries to escape with their lives. The plot is semi-developed, in that watchers are drawn in and want to know what happens, but the reasons of the coup are not fully explained until deep into the movie. Frankly, a lot of the plot takes some serious inductive reasoning to figure out what exactly is happening. While the action is not necessarily mindless, it is constant, and that makes the film feel completely exhausting. But where the action moves, the characters do not. Wilson pulls off the desperate-father part well, and viewers will definitely start to care for the family due to his portrayal. His only change, though, is when you see him have to go to extremes to protect his family. The only other big name in the film is Pierce Brosnan, who plays Hammond, the mysterious British “tourist.” He pops in and out, rescuing the family and guiding them to safety. He stays fairly unchanged as a well-trained combatant. He’s essentially a less-charming version of his dated Bond character. You could equate “No Escape” to “Taken” without too much trouble—just magnify the action in “Taken” times 20. Similar elements of going the distance to protect your family are present in both films, as is the peak in your stress levels. Overall, “No Escape” is an average movie, worth the watch, but not worth dropping money on the DVD purchase.

Netflix By Adrianna Zampieri
Although it’s only September, it’s never too early to get in the spirit for Halloween. A horror film will give that extra haunted nudge into October. Netflix has added to its collection, the Oscar-winning American horror film “Sleepy Hollow,” which will have you double-checking the door locks before you go to bed. Directed by the talented and eccentric Tim Burton, the movie follows the disturbing adventure of Ichabod Crane, a constable sent to investigate a series of decapitations in Sleepy Hollow. The frightened townspeople believe it to be the work of a vengeful apparition, the Headless Horseman. However, Ichabod works tirelessly to unravel the town’s darkest secrets. In the process, he stumbles on unexpected supernatural forces that threaten the survival of the town. Johnny Depp, as expected in any Burton film, excels in his role as Ichabod, bringing to the screen a fully developed character defined by quirky mannerisms and a dedication to the truth. Christina Ricci is cast as Katrina Van Tassel, Ichabod’s love interest, and she effortlessly captures the young woman’s air of innocence. Together these actors will have you on the edge of your seat as the quest to solve the murders becomes more perilous and the secrets more sinister. Lies are revealed. Loyalties are challenged. And you won’t know who to trust.
