Music Reviews George Strait
By Jordyn Smith
King George has done it again. Strait’s “Cold Beer Conversation” is, by far, one of 2015’s best albums. The emotional highlight of the record is “Everything I See,” written by Strait and his son Bubba. The song is about Strait’s father, who passed in 2013, is a musing song about being able to talk to his father from the beyond.
Album:
Cold Beer Conversations
The album provides a great array of tracks like high school love in “It Was Love,” to not holding onto bad vibes in “Let It Go.” A few upbeat, good-timing songs make an appearance on the album in “Going Going Gone,” “Stop And Drink,” and “Wish You Well.” Also on the album is the track “Take Me to Texas,” many will recognize this from the History Channel mini-series Texas Rising.
Release Date: September 24, 2015
Strait hits all the right chords with is new album, further proving his long-reigning claim as the King of Country Music.
Ryan Adams takes a stab at Taylor Swift’s “1989” album and knocks it out of the park. Giving the album a rock-infused and singer/songwriter vibe, Adams has displayed his wide variety talents—specifically his ability to add layers of emotions to the record comes through on almost every track.
Ryan Adams
By stripping down songs like “Blank Space,” “How You Get the Girl,” and “This Love,” Adams brings an aspect of vulnerability to this album. His best cover is “Shake It Off,” stylistically reminiscent of Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.” Adams brings his rocking side out in “Welcome to New York” and “All You Had to Do Was Stay.” If you are a Taylor Swift fan, you can appreciate what Ryan Adams has done with “1989.”

Drake and Future got together and dropped a mixtape. They collaborated to bring fans “What a Time to Be Alive” and for any Drake fan, it is a great time to be alive. This album has everything a typical Drake fan wants: great beats, flowing lyrics, and catchy hooks. Bringing in Future to collaborate on the album was a smart move by Drake, bringing an extra component to this album. The semi-spontaneous mixtape is comprised of 11 tracks that are well varied. Drake and Future do an excellent job of mixing different beats throughout the album. The result is an album that does not sound like it is repeating itself. Each song stands out on its own two feet, refreshing for a modern hip-hop album.
If you are a fan of electronica, get ready. Disclosure has released their new album “Caracal,” enlisting some major superstars to collaborate with them on this album. Sam Smith, Lorde, The Weeknd, and others lend their talents to several songs on the record. The 15-track album will resonate with fans of 80’s pop, bringing dance club vibes to the entire album. Disclosure is able to bring a variety of sounds into their music. “Holding On (featuring Gregory Porter),” “Echoes,” and “Hourglass” are the most upbeat tracks of the album. Disclosure was able to bring the beat down in “Moving Mountains,” bringing balance to the album. The best collaboration goes to “Omen” which features Sam Smith.

The story of H-E-B began in the small Texas town of Kerrville where a woman named Florence Butt invested $60 in the business. After fifteen years of work, she hands the business over to her son Howard E. Butt where he would lead the company to become one of the largest grocery chains in the nation. In the hundred and five years that H-E-B has been in business, the company has had many great leaders, one of those being President and Chief Operating Officer, Craig L. Boyan. Graduating from Harvard (Cum Laude) in Economics and was a member of the Harvard Crew; he then went on to Columbia Business School where he received his MBA. Boyan joined H-E-B in 2005 as Chief Strategic Officer after serving as an advisor with the company for two years before joining. Boyan keeps busy by being a member of the Board of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and the Board of Trustees for Texas Biomedical Research Institute. He serves on the Board of Trinity University, UT Health Science Center and Wellness Coalition along with being Chairman of the Board for Junior Achievement of South Texas and General Campaign Chair for the 2015 United Way Campaign. It comes with no surprise that Boyan will be receiving the McLane Leadership in Business award that is given annually to a man or women who is dedicated, a problem solver, and plays a major role in businesses across the nation.

In March 2012, Zack and Jessica Varner gave birth to their son, Beau. Shortly after birth, Beau was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary disease caused by inheriting two copies of the mutated CF gene. Those living with Cystic Fibrosis must battle constant infections in their lungs, difficulty breathing, and lack of nutrition due to problems in the pancreas.
Battling Cystic Fibrosis: The Beau Means Business Foundation By Annabeth Reeb
“At this time my wife, Jessica, and I noticed the community lacked an organization dedicated to increasing CF awareness and helping those with CF in the Brazos Valley,” Zack explained.” Therefore, Beau Means Business Foundation was established.” Zack thought of the name for the Beau Means Business Foundation while thinking of a team name for The Great Strides event (a walk organized by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that raises funds and increases CF awareness). “When I was brainstorming names of a team that would represent Beau, I kept going back to my childhood and remembering Bo Jackson commercials/posters coining the phrase “Bo Knows,” said Zack. “Since that phrase stuck in my head all these years, I decided to create a similar phrase that people would hopefully remember too, so I came up with ‘Beau Means Business.’ When we established the 501 c3 non profit organization, we decided to use the phrase for the foundation.” The Varners started the Beau Means Business Foundation with the purpose of educating and inspiring the people in the Bryan-College Station community in

addition to raising funds for research and cures for Cystic Fibrosis. In order to do this, the couple came up with the idea of hosting benefit concerts in Downtown Bryan (you may have heard of the Rock Away Cystic Fibrosis event they host in the spring). On October 3rd, the foundation will be hosting the BMBF Dinner Concert Series at the Grand Stafford Theater at 7pm. “BMBF is unique in that all positions are volunteer, therefore all funds can go directly to accomplishing our mission,” Zack said. Attendees can rest assured that all of their donations will go directly to helping those suffering from CF. The event will not only contain food and music, but also information about the disease and those affected. “I want people that attend our events to have a better understanding about the genetic disorder, so they can educate others about Cystic Fibrosis when it comes up in future conversations” Zack said. “Our community does not realize that they might have a close relationship with Cystic Fibrosis and not even know it. 1 in 30 people are carriers for Cystic Fibrosis and this ratio increases to 1 in 25 for the Caucasian population. This means that Bryan-College Station has more 6,500 people that are carriers of the Cystic Fibrosis mutation. The offspring of two carriers have a 25% chance of having Cystic Fibrosis.” Since BMFB is completely volunteer-run, the Varners give an enormous amount of their time to the foundation, while also balancing their son, foster children, and work. Zack explained to us how the main struggle of running a non-profit
is time management. “The late nights I spend functioning in the role as the director of the foundation is fueled by having a son battling a serious disease every day. Beau never gets a day off from Cystic Fibrosis, so neither do I in my service of bringing more awareness to CF and searching for ways to ensure a cure is found for this awful disease.” Beau and other children suffering from CF are inspiration for us all to give back to our community and those who need us. Both Zack and Jessica graduated from Texas A&M, and they feel fortunate to have a community of Aggies who are motivated to make a difference for the CF cause. “We are blessed to live a community where people have embraced our cause and actively want to support BMBF to ensure our events are successful and our mission is accomplished.” Zack said. “During the short duration of BMBF being a nonprofit organization, we have learned no individual can fight CF alone and it is going to take the entire community to come together to prevail over this beatable disease.” So what can you do? The Beau Means Business Foundation is always looking for people to assist them in their mission—whether it’s volunteering at an event, providing a service, or a monetary donation. They are also looking to grow their Chef CF program, where a chef designs a recipe for a CF diet that can be prepared at home. You can contact them at info@bmbfoundation.org for information or to volunteer.

KEOS has their own style, one that is unique because they aren’t pigeon-holed to one genre of music. Their playlist is based off of what volunteers believe the community would like to hear, ranging from rock and roll, blues and country. The station’s talk shows are said to have a more democratic stand, an unusual choice for the conservative town they are based in. They pride themselves on playing music and giving views that you would not normally hear on mainstream radio. The Volunteer Jam is a fun way for listeners to donate so the station can continue. The suggested donation for attending the event is $15, a small price to pay for an afternoon of country music. Be sure to venture out to Lakeside Icehouse to have a beer with your friends, listen to some great music, get out and meet new people, and support the KEOS cause.

Everest Action (PG-13)
By Linley McCord The movie drought is over: theaters are beginning to refill their screens with fall blockbusters, starting with “Everest.” The movie is a gripping story that follows a group of climbers trying to summit the most daunting mountain on earth. It’s based on the 1996 Everest expedition disaster, and you can find a firsthand account of the event in the memoir “Into Thin Air” by journalist Jon Krakauer. Visually beautiful, “Everest” follows a team from all over the world as they come to tackle the mountain. Led by Rob Hall (Jason Clarke—he was in “The Great Gatsby” and “Zero Dark Thirty”), a group of experienced climbers voyages to Nepal and bond together as a team to attempt the hike of a lifetime. They meet up with Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his team at base camp to start the strenuous training on Everest. With a May 10 summit date, the teams decide to partner up to alleviate all the responsibilities of getting a team up the mountain by themselves. Scott Fischer is the stereotypical mountaineer—a bearded and man-bunned hippie—and Rob Hall is the caring New Zealander with an expecting and doting wife at home (played by Keira Knightly). On the way down, a devastating snowstorm crashes on the mountain, dangerously scattering the teams. The most astounding parts of the movie were the shots of the mountain and storm. While you realize the storm is digitally made, it still takes your breath away and makes your stomach clench. Then the shots of Everest itself are incredibly beautiful and you understand why people crave the feeling of being on top of the world. It delves into the mountaineering culture and you’ll feel part of the team for the most part, but there some moments that will make you yell, “No! That’s a bad idea!” and whatever questionable decision is made anyway. You’ll care for the team as a whole, but there isn’t a significant amount of character development except for Rob Hall, which is probably a good thing considering that some of the team doesn’t make it back to base. It’s a heart-pounding experience, and the 3D aspect actually enhances the film for a nice change. If you’re willing to pay the extra cash, it’s worth it.

Gotham Netflix By Adrianna Zampieri
Holy binge-watch Batman, the first season of “Gotham” is now available on Netflix. If you’re a DC fan itching for relief from all of the Marvel hype, then this is a show you do not want to miss. A prequel to Bruce Wayne and his Batman origin story, “Gotham” follows the evolution of James Gordon from rookie detective to commissioner of Gotham City. Of course that evolution has a quite a few hiccups. Gordon is just one player in a never-ending, politically-corrupt chess match to keep the city safe from the mob and other nefarious villains. Ben McKenzie excels as a morally-conflicted James Gordon. He hasn’t aged a day since his role as Ryan Atwood on “The O.C.,” however, his acting skills have most certainly improved over the years. As a result of McKenzie’s convincing and passionate portrayal, you’ll be rooting for Gordon throughout the entire season. During this season, you’ll also encounter the origin stories of other well-known DC characters such as Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin), Selina Kyle (Catwoman), and Edward Nygma (The Riddler). This intriguing cast will have you glued to your screen for the entirety of the 22 episodes.
