Music Reviews Pentatonix Album: Pentatonix Release Date: October 16, 2015

By Jordyn Smith

Fan-favorite Pentatonix has released their self-titled album’s deluxe edition. The band’s incredible ability to harmonize shines through, as the album has an eclectic mix of melodies and vibes. From upbeat tracks like “Na Na Na” to bluesy tracks like “Can’t Sleep Love,” their ability to mix it up shows why they have had a spike in popularity. Each singer’s ability is showcased in this 17-track album. They took a creative leap by releasing an album comprised of originals, a risk because Pentatonix is known for the creative covers of hit tracks. With this release, they have taken their same energetic passion and elevated it. To close it out, they included three covers for their faithful listeners.

Carnival Music recording artist Hailey Whitters delivers her first full-length album with the release of “Black Sheep.” In the age of pop-country, Whitters veers in the opposite direction, leaning more towards the styles of Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe. Her 10-track album mixes high-rock country songs with traditional ballads. She kicks it up a notch with “Long Come to Jesus,” “Heartbreaker,” and “Pocket Change.” Then she brings it back level with “Late Bloomer” and “Low All Afternoon.” The title track “Black Sheep” brings out the rebel in us all, and the record as a whole is a nice break from the pop-country format. With great prospects and what looks to be a bright future ahead of her, Hailey Whitters provides a great listen with “Black Sheep.”

Hailey Whitters Album: Black Sheep

Lovato comes straight out of the gate with the title track on this release. This hard-hitting anthem shows a new side to Lovato and helps set the tone and theme for the rest of the album. The 15-track album showcases a great deal of maturity in Lovato’s music.

Demi Lovato

Her passion is unwavering with each track delivering exceptionally well and her incredible vocal talent is at the forefront of this album. The eclectic mix of melodies and instrumentation helps this album come together well, adding to the fact that Lovato has out-done herself with this release.

Release Date: October 16, 2015

Bronze Radio Return releases “Light Me Up,” a 10-track album that showcases the band’s take on the Alternative genre. They have elements of electronic, rock, and funk infused into this record, and the result is a unique collection of tracks. They mix more upbeat tracks with “Light Me Up” with more laid-back tracks like “Nowhere to Be.” Overall, if you have not heard of this band before and are looking for something new, Bronze Radio Return is your answer. Their ability to showcase their talents and connect make this a band you need to listen to.

NAVIGATING THE GROVE

By Annabeth Reeb

For those Aggie Loyalists who will be making the 473-mile journey to Oxford • this weekend to watch Texas A&M take on the Rebels of Ole Miss, we have a few tips for you. The Grove, and Mississippians in general, have a uniquely different culture from what is the norm in College Station. To avoid culture shock, muddy feet, and a mug shot, be sure to keep this guide in mind when you are stumbling through one of the country’s premiere tailgating arenas. • • Let’s go ahead and define The Grove for those of you who have never been to Oxford. The Grove: 10 acres of tailgating glory, coupled with miles and miles of tents, mud, and bodies, located in the center of Ole Miss campus. Yes, it’s just as scary – and awesome – as it sounds. • • Set down the bottle. Whether you are of age or not, this rule is a strict one. Ole Miss police keep an eye out for beer cans, beer bottles, and liquor bottles in unsuspecting game-goers’ hands. If you want to carry a drink around with you: pour it in a plastic cup to avoid trouble.

Ladies, there’s no need to fear high-healed enemies for this game. Unlike the dangerously tall shoes that Alabama girls were sporting last weekend, most Ole Miss students and fans wear boots to save themselves from the famed Mississippi mud. Don’t be afraid to bring your game day kickers to Oxford, although, you better be prepared to clean them. Look out for the new street signs. Tailgaters put signs up in the middle of the Grove to indicate dirt paths toward different tents. You’ll find signs like “our tent is on the left of the Walk of Champions, four tents to the right of the red one.” That being said – be prepared to get a little lost. Pace yourself. The tailgates start bright and early, with no shortage of refreshments. The Grove environment is a rowdy one, and you’ll need all of your strength to cheer on those Aggies.

Bloody Apples

Monster Cookies

Everybody loves a chocolate-covered apple on Halloween. “WonkyWonderful” has added a creepy twist to this classic staple, and it is sure to delight your taste buds while satisfying your vampire-like craving for something just a little bit bloody.

Monster cookies – the treat you better keep an eye on. This odd-looking yet adorable treat created by “Lil’ Luna” is gooey and chewy and everything yummy. Make them green like this recipe, or mix food coloring to produce all sorts of different Halloween colors.

What You Need: • 4 large apples • 12 oz white chocolate melts • 2 tbsp shortening • 4 bamboo apple sticks • Wilton’s red sparkle gel Here’s How to Do It: 1. Thoroughly wash and dry apples. Then insert the bamboo sticks.

What You Need: • 1 box of yellow cake mix • 1/2 cup butter softened • 1/2 tsp vanilla • 1 8 oz. bar cream cheese softened • 1 egg • Green food coloring • Powdered sugar • Candy eyeballs

2. In large measuring cup, microwave chocolate and shortening for 1 minute. Stop and stir vigorously half way through until all chocolate is melted and smooth.

Here’s How to Do It: 1. Beat together butter, vanilla, egg and cream cheese until fluffy.

3. Dip apples in melted chocolate and transfer to baking sheet lined with wax paper. 4. Refrigerate apples 5-10 minutes or until chocolate sets. 5. Drizzle the red sparkle gel on the top of the apples. Use a wooden stick to gently spread gel and manipulate the “blood” drips. 6. Refrigerate the apples to prevent gel from dripping further.

2. Mix in the cake mix. Add green food coloring until it’s the color you want. 3. Chill the dough for 30 minutes. 4. Roll into balls and dip in a bowl of powdered sugar. 5. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. While the cookies are warm and fresh out of the oven, push the candy eyeballs into the center or all over the cookie. 6. Enjoy munching on your monsters!

7. Let sit at room temperature 10-15 minutes before serving to allow chocolate to soften, and enjoy your bloody treat!

NORMA JEAN @ GRAND STAFFORD THEATER By Jordyn Smith

Norma Jean will be playing the Grand Stafford Theater on Friday October 23. Hailing from Atlanta, the band has been busy touring heavily in recent months. This week alone, they will play shows in California and Arizona before heading to BCS. The group was originally founded in 1997 and the evolved from their original ensemble that was dubbed “Luti-Kruss.” The band used Marilyn Monroe’s real name for the name of the band, and the nomenclature took a special meaning when they found out that Norma means “patterns” and Jean means “God’s grace and mercy.” The combined meaning of the name is “Patterns of grace and mercy.” Since their beginning, the band has released six studio albums, with their first album “Bless the

Martyr and Kiss the Child” dropping in 2002. Their next release “O God, the Aftermath,” went on to claim the top spot on the Top Christian albums chart, a release that would earn them a Grammy nomination in 2006. “Redeemer,” the band’s third album was released in 2007, and shortly thereafter, drummer Ross Robinson left the group. The next year, the group went on to play all tour dates for Vans Warped Tour. In 2009, Norma Jean cut ties with their longtime record label Solid State and signed a new record deal with Razor & Tie. They went on to release their fifth album, “Meridonial,” in July 2010. This album showed a darker, heavier side to the band. After touring four a few more years, the band released a sixth album,

“Wrongdoers,” in August 2013. In May 2015, the band announced plans to release a seventh full-length album. In September of 2015, they re-signed with Solid State Records, who will be handling the release of their next album in 2016. They also released plans for the 10th Anniversary of “O God, the Aftermath” Tour. In addition to their extensive studio work, the band has had incredible touring opportunities – including playing Ozzyfest in 2006 with Ozzy Osbourne, Avenged Sevenfold, and others. Norma Jean has headlined, opened, and changed members, but one thing has stayed consistent: the music. They have evolved and matured, but as a band, they have never forgotten their roots.

60x60 Dance @ AVPA By Madison Matous

Sixty minutes. Sixty art pieces. The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts is putting on 60x60, where sixty oneminute musical compositions will be partnered with works by Texas A&M students and faculty from theatre, dance and visual art. That’s right: a new composer, a new choreographer and new actor and/or new artist each minute for sixty minutes. The idea is maddening, overwhelming and most of all exciting at the same time. This kind of performance was first put on in 2003 by Robert Voisey and has grown ever since, with performances taking place everywhere from Germany to Argentina, and now College Station. The idea was first conceived as a way to showcase new composers and their music, which has since presented thousands of composers – not to mention actors, dancers and performers – to the world since it began. Texas A&M plans to put their own spin on the project by presenting the university’s own talent. Mark your calendars for October 27 at 7:00pm. Tickets are on sale and priced at $12 for the public and $7 for students.
