BON JOVI Album: This House Is Not For Sale Release Date: November 4, 2016

Unless you have a deep knowledge of Dante’s Inferno, the film is just like any other action film. It is entertaining, but the scholastic spin that they try to push is not well-received. To many, the story is muddled, but with all the chaos and mayhem, the story line is not that big of a deal. The impressive scenery from the actual locations is something to be admired. Places like the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice are among the locations featured in the film. Unfortunately, if you are familiar with the Langdon series (“Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons”) then you will see that the story line is predictable. The character development between the three films is nonexistent. Inferno is rated PG-13 for violence, disturbing images, language, thematic elements, and brief sensuality.

S

ince the band’s last studio album in 2013, Bon Jovi fans have been livin’ on a prayer that the group will release a new album. Prayers answered: their latest album, “This House Is Not for Sale,” was released on November 4 and is comprised of 12 new tracks. This is the first album to be produced without lead guitarist Richie Sambora, who will be replaced by Phil X. Additionally, bassist Hugh McDonald, who has been an unofficial member since 1994 will be presented as an official member. Though Sambora has been a signature guitarist since the beginning of the band’s career, Phil X brings similar musical styling that set Bon Jovi apart from other rock groups. The band will begin touring on February 8, 2017 and three singles have already been released as promotional songs. “Knockout,” “Labor of Love” and “Born Again Tomorrow” have proven that the group has maintained its reputation in the rock world even after three stagnant years between albums.

TEA2GO by Alicia Torres

I

n the last few months, we have watched the Tower Point shopping center bring some great additions to Aggieland, such as a new Spoons Yogurt location and Farmhouse Creamery. We crossed William D. Fitch last week to try out Tea2Go! First off we had no idea a place like this existed. Picture a Starbucks but for tea with free wifi and a good place to study included. We were first met with a bookshelf FULL of tea options. The service was excellent and they were super patient while suggesting the best sellers. Trying something with pumpkin in it was a must so we went with a rooibos tea called Pumpkin Pie served hot with vanilla sugar. They also offer tea latte so we ordered the Madagascar Coconut, which is a white tea, and we added coconut sugar and 2% milk. We heard fruit teas were also best sellers so we chose to have an iced green tea called Raspberry Acai Sencha with lemon sugar. Tea2Go is focused on the health benefits of loose-leaf tea from around the world, and by the end of this taste test, we agree. All of our selections were delicious, but the tea latte (Madagascar Coconut) was the best by far, but we recommend you try them all. With the winter months rolling in, keep in mind that the Relaxing Mint is an herbal tea with honey that is served hot and would be the perfect remedy for a cold. Not only can you order a tea to go, but you can also bring home your own tea to brew. With more than 120 flavors, you are sure to find your perfect match. pg 8 • MAROON WEEKLY • Nov. 09, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: EYB’S CHRIS THOMPSON

li Young Band has taken the country music scene by storm and proven that they are a force to be reckoned with. From sold out shows to number one hits, they have found great success in the world of country music. The band is made up of four original members, Mike Eli, James Young, Jon Jones, and Chris Thompson. The band will soon be revisiting College Station, and we got the chance to sit down with drummer, Chris Thompson, where we discussed their success, the journey, and – of course – music. MW: Eli Young Band will be performing at Hurricane Harry’s on November 16. What is the band’s past with College Station, and what is the experience of playing in College Station like?

CT: Yeah, we’ve played College Station for the majority of our career. We’ve been a band for sixteen years and I think we started playing in College Station about three years in. It has always had fun memories and has held a place in our hearts because it is the first place we ever sold out a show. It is a fun town. It is a great, fun, college town, and I feel like every show we play there, the crowd just has that extra notch of excitement and happiness and they always bring it. It really makes it a lot of fun for us.

pg 12 • MAROON WEEKLY • Nov. 09, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

MW: We’ve have seen you play here and we definitely see the energy you are talking about. The members of Eli Young Band have remained the same since the band started in 2000. What do you think is so special about this band, and what is it that allows you to work so well together? CT: The four of us were friends before we started a band. You know, we’d hang out and play music with each other, like actually play CD’s and talk about music and just hang out. Eventually, we realized that we had the components to make a band and we wanted to play music together. We have always put our friendships first and kind of focused on that. By the time we started having any kind of real success, we had gotten all of the dumb band fights out of the way and we were pretty focused on what the four of us wanted to do, and we were focused on keeping it the four of us. That has made it a pretty easy ride for the most part. MW: It sure is great to see a band with so much success that is so focused on each other in a way that almost forms a family. Starting in Denton, Texas and growing into a band known all over the country with several number one hit and numerous awards, what has the growth of this group been like for you personally? Did you expect it?

CT: No, I didn’t expect it. It has been incredibly rewarding, but I remember for a number of years, in the beginning of the band, I had friends and family coming to me saying, “You know Chris, you gotta have a backup plan.” My mom wanted me to be a doctor or something for the longest time and I just told them this drumming thing was working out. They wanted me to go to this kind of school or that kind of school, part-time. I had my brother once sit me down and be like oh you gotta make a decision, like what do you wanna do, and I was like well the band is really working out and he said, “I don’t see it. I don’t think it’s gonna happen.” It’s been really rewarding because now those people, my family, in particular, are huge fans of the band, and they are very proud of the band. It is just nice to see that the four of us made the right decision. MW: Surely it’s been quite rewarding, and the band has so many songs that we’re sure have different meanings to each of you and connect to each of you differently. Which Eli Young Band song means the most to you? Which song do you enjoy playing live the most? CT: They are probably one in the same right now. I feel like “Even if it Breaks Your Heart” is a song that we can relate to so much, and I feel like it’s a song that the audience can relate to so much. It’s fun to play live because it’s one of those songs that the majority of the people in the crowd know and really enjoy and look forward to hearing and get really excited about. It’s a positive song too, and you can play something that is popular and positive and just kind of makes everybody happy, it’s a good feeling. MW: Definitely! We know a lot of people that relate to that song. Eli Young Band has played all over the country; is there any particular show or experience with the band that stands out as the most memorable for you? CT: There has been so many. I mean, it is really hard to pick one thing. When we are on the road two or three days a week every week and it has been that way for years and years, we’ve been to a lot of places and had a lot of experiences. I would say that any time we play towns like New York City or places that are so far away from where we started, or when we travel abroad and play to foreign crowds. Those are just always these crazy moments because they really make you feel like you’ve actually made it. I would say those are fun experiences, and also whenever we are able to get off the bus and go do something. Whether it be hiking or going to see a historical site or

going to a really great restaurant. That kind of thing we really enjoy doing. MW: It’s good to stop and do something normal while you’re on the road. For our last question, we want to talk about your latest release and future music from Eli Young Band. Your latest release was “Saltwater Gospel” in June of this year; what is different about this release compared to past releases? Is there any new music in the works that we can look forward to? CT: Well “Saltwater Gospel” is the first almost beach song that we have put out in a long, long time, and that was really fun for us because we really haven’t had that kind of song, especially on country radio, but we didn’t want to put out a typical going down to the beach to hang out song. “Saltwater Gospel” has a spiritual aspect to it as well which we all really appreciate and that kind of resonated with the four of us. Lyrically I think it is a different kind of song. If you said that ‘Drunk Last Night” was a drinking song, then you could

definitely say that “Saltwater Gospel” is a beach song although they are both slightly different than what you would expect. And yeah, we finished a new record n February actually, and we are hoping to have it out by the beginning of next year. We are very proud of it. We’re itching for it to come out! MW: We’re excited for it! CT: For the tone of the record, we tried to do sort of what we have done in the past. Some people call it old-school Eli Young Band, and that was a conscious effort on this new record. MW: Well, great! We are looking forward to it, and College Station is excited to welcome you back! CT: Absolutely! Harry’s is always one of those places that we walk in and say, “Here we go again, this is gonna be a good time!” You heard it from Eli Young Band drummer, Chris Thompson, himself! This is going to be another great night with Eli Young Band playing Hurricane Harry’s on November 16. The doors will be opening at 9pm and tickets can be purchased online, at Cavender’s Boot City on Highway 6, or Aggieland Outfitters on University for $20 each. Buy your tickets early and you will be entered to win an Eli Young Band swag bag!

COURT IS IN SESSION

A

s the final step before the regular season, Texas A&M Men’s Basketball topped St. Edwards, 87-69, in an exhibition game on Friday.

overall, mostly upset about some lazy passes that turned into turnovers, but overall thinks that this young team could go places this year.

Coming off an SEC Championship season and a Sweet 16 appearance, expectations are high for Billy Kennedy’s squad this year. The team said goodbye to some big name starters including Alex Caruso, Danuel House, Anthony Collins, and Jalen Jones as well as fan favorite Kyle Dobbins.

Freshman Robert Williams turned heads, shooting five of seven for 16 points. In addition, the youngster racked up nine boards and blocked six shots, which Williams sited as his best attribute during the post-game conference.

Jalen Jones, Alex Caurso, and Danuel House found their way into the NBA after successful collegiate basketball careers. House even made the active roster with the Washington Wizards to kick off the 2016 – 2017 NBA season.

In addition to Williams, the Aggies welcome new comers Eric Vila, JC Hampton, Mark French, Caleb Smith and JJ Caldwell. Caldwell was a very highly sought after prospect, but was deemed ineligible for this season by the NCAA.

Back in Aggieland, the results of the exhibition game seem promising for the Aggies. Without starters DJ Hogg and Tyler Davis playing in the matchup, there were four players in double-digit point totals; Admon Gilder, Tonny Trocha-Morelos, Tavario Miller and freshman Robert Williams.

While football is all the rage this fall in Aggieland, keep an eye on those boys in maroon and white over at Reed Arena. They are poised for another great year as they officially open the season on Friday November 11 against Northwestern State at 8pm at Reed Arena. The Aggies will open SEC play on December 29 against Tennessee at 8pm at Reed as well.

Davis was out with a sprained ankle and the decision on Hogg was made earlier in the summer according to Billy Kennedy during the postgame press conference. Coach Kennedy had a couple of complaints about the game

This team is young, but talented. Go pick up a Reed Rowdies shirt at the MSC Bookstore (it will get you to the game about 15 minutes early) and get to Reed. Let’s show the defending SEC Champions some support from the 12th Man.

VS

the battle for the best meal deal

L

et’s face it; the life of a college student can be a struggle. Trying to balance school, work, a social life, and a budget can be hard on an inexperienced young adult. But, there are two apps that can make the balancing just a little bit easier. Hooked and TasteBud are two apps made to help you save money at restaurants around town. They each help save money in different ways, making them the two must-have apps for college students. Hooked describes itself as “The #1 College Food & Drink App,” and it is clear why. Launched by Tim Rothwell and Brett Berman, Hooked is an app that gives you exclusive deals. Think, “Retail Me Not” but with an hourly time limit. On the app, you log in, and on the “Hooks” page, you find a list of the current promotions that Hooked has to offer at the restaurants near you. Deals such as buy one get one free, 50% and 20% off of the total are their most common. This app is useful for saving money and just for finding new places in your area to try. The catch is, these deals do not last for long. Under each restaurant is a time limit for the promotion, and it is usually within hours or minutes. The good news is, the deals are always changing, so if you don’t see something you like, within the hour there will be new promotions to choose from. TasteBud, on the other hand, uses a different approach to save money. Upon logging in, a list of restaurants will appear with different discounts. From this you pick the one that you want to eat and lock in the discount. The app requires you to put in a debit card, so upon paying for your meal, TasteBud immediately refunds the discount. This method cuts down on awkward coupon scanning and no one knows you are using it. The deals change depending on the restaurant and the time of day, so there is always a different value to choose from! While TasteBud typically has better discounts, Hooked has more restaurant options. Both save money, which is crucial, making them some of the smartest apps you can download!

MOMENTS IN THE WILDERNESS @ REYNOLDS GALLERY

he MSC Visual Arts Committee will soon host a brand new photo exhibition in the Texas A&M Memorial Student Center called “Moments in the Wilderness” by Loyd Sneed. The exhibition will connect you with nature by displaying photos from all facets of the environment. Sneed’s goal was to take you on a journey and allow you to see everything through a camera lens. The exhibit will be a journey through nature with photos of mountain landscapes at sunrise or bright moss colorfully and specifically placed in the rocks by Mother Nature. Sneed appreciates the world around him and that appreciation is displayed in his photographs. The connection that will be made between the photos and the viewer will leave them with a greater appreciation for the environment and photography.

this exhibition, Sneed had a goal to show viewers the order in the chaos of the universe which is an uncommon skill. His view of the world is said to be accredited to his long career in science, but it is truly amazing how gifted he is in both science and the arts.

An Aggie in our midst, Sneed received his doctorate in veterinary microbiology from Texas A&M in 1985. Years of schooling did not distract from his growing passion for photography that began for him at age 12. His talent has grown over the years and he has touched the hearts of many with his astounding representations of the beauty that surrounds him. In

Loyd Sneed’s “Moments in the Wilderness” exhibition began on November 2 and will continue its display through January 14. Admission for the exhibition is free and open to the public. Discover a new love for nature as you form a connection with Sneed’s artwork that portrays nature with great beauty and clarity.

The MSC Visual Arts Committee is a student organization at Texas A&M that attempts to bring art to the MSC to inspire and educate the students and faculty of the university along with College Station residents and visitors. The committee brings in exhibitions that viewers never forget. They display in the Reynolds Gallery located on the second floor of the MSC and are open Tuesday – Sunday.
