CHRISTMAS BREAK BINGING ON NETFLIX

C

Weekly Media

Shakedown

hristmas Break means many things to many different people. Whether you’re the kind to fully embrace the holidays with decorated Starbucks cups and non-stop Christmas music, or if all Christmas means to you is extra hours of much-needed sleep, there’s one thing we can all agree on: Netflix is a wonderful thing during the break. We all know the guilt that comes with watching twenty hours of your favorite show when you are suppose to be studying, working, or doing anything productive at all. But holiday binges are different. You can binge in peace. Here are a couple to get you started:

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS If you gagged after reading the title, then skip this one. “Pretty Little Liars” isn’t for everyone, but more people found pleasure in this dramatic series than you’d think. Most, however, quit watching after season three, when the liars lost and found “A” for the millionth time. Seasons four, five, and six are mainly the same plot of finding the culprit only to be wrong again, but they are still worth the watch if you enjoy cliché romance, drama, and “Gossip Girl.” The liars are finally coming to a close once season 7B airs in August, letting PLL fans rest once and for all. “Pretty Little

MIRANDA LAMBERT Album: The Weight of These Wings Release Date: November 18, 2016

iranda Lambert fans have anticipated this release since her last album, and it has not disappointed. This two-disc album features 24 songs, each unique and true to the Miranda Lambert we have all known and loved for years. Due to the recent divorce of beloved country music couple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, those anticipating the album expected the themes Lambert focuses on. Although the album never wallows in the pain of heartbreak, there are songs about moving on, flirting, getting drunk, and making plans. Some expect a few throw away songs to be mixed in a 24-track album, but each track is packed full of meaning if listeners take time to find it.

The Weight of These Wings” includes covers as well as co-written songs by Lambert. The album is fresh yet classic, and it is just what we hoped would come from Lambert. You’re guaranteed to root for Lambert as her new album takes you on a journey with her through the cycle of moving on. by Abby Newton

Liars” is the kind of mindless binge that will take you through an entire day without even leaving the comfort of your bed. GREY’S ANATOMY For most people, “Grey’s Anatomy” is a familiar show that is always a safe bet when nothing else is on. However, there is a lot of merit in watching the show from premiere to close. The show does a good job of having individual plots with each episode while also maintaining an overall plot throughout. Fans say you can gain an entire new perspective of the show by starting with season one. While nothing is set in stone yet, rumor has it that season 13 will finally put an end to the second longest medical drama on TV. There’s no better time like the present. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER “How I Met Your Mother” is another show that can be watched episode to

episode or sporadically, but the show’s biggest fans claim the only way to truly get everything out of the series is to watch it from beginning to end. “How I Met Your Mother” is light, funny, and entertaining: perfect for the holidays. Most episodes won’t leave you dragging your feet until you watch another, so this is a good choice if you don’t have hours and hours to lie in bed at one time. NETFLIX ORIGINALS Netflix has been blowing viewers away with their outstanding original series, such as “House of Cards,” “Making a Murderer,” and “Orange is the New Black.” Any of these are great choices for a good old fashion Netflix Binge. However, be warned that none of these shows are necessarily family friendly. If you’re looking for a great movie for the whole family, you can never go wrong with “Christmas with the Kranks” or “Miracle on 24th Street,” which are both available on Netflix.

FIRST FRIDAY @ GRAND STAFFORD

F

irst Friday in Downtown Bryan will take place December 2, and the Grand Stafford has some exciting performances planned. The Stafford will be welcoming Roxy Roca, Keeton Coffman, Joey McGee, Jenna McDaniel, Matt Martinez and the Lonely Wheel. Each of these performances will work together to build a unique atmosphere inside the theatre that is perfectly fit for First Friday.

One of the main performers of the night, Roxy Roca, is a southern soul band based in Austin. This band is heavily influenced by funk/soul legends of the late 60s as well as rock ‘n’ roll pioneers such as Little Richard, and their unique and infectious sound captivates listeners’ spirits. This band began in 2010 and has been described as a powerhouse of their genre. Their sound has been given the name Dynamite Texas Soul for its explosive horn-powered southern soul that Texans are blown away by. Also performing is Keeton Coffman, a small town Texan with a rock and roll soul. His recently released album, “Killer Eyes,” is described as Heartland Rock and Roll and have a variety of songs ranging from upbeat pub songs to gospel infused tracks. Coffman is made for the stage and these two performers will be the highlight of first Friday.

pg 18 • MAROON WEEKLY • Nov. 30, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

Brazos Valley resident Joey McGee is a songwriter native to New Orleans. McGee is another artist with a unique sound. This fusion of soul, country, rock, and blues also features a Creole-Cajun spice that keeps you on your toes. McGee is known for solo work as well as with his band and is spontaneous on stage; you will never predict what he will do next. Another excellent performance will be from Jenna McDaniel. This artist was born to be a performer and has had a passion for music her entire life. Reba, Faith Hill, and Taylor Swift inspired McDaniel at a young age. She picked up a guitar in sixth grade and began her career as she wrote songs inspired by the honesty and reliability she found in Taylor Swift’s early albums. Taylor Swift heavily inspired her, but she has carved out her own path in which her sheer talent separates herself from other country artists. This First Friday, The Grand Stafford will be exactly where you want to be. General admission is free and all ages are welcome at this family friendly event. Other ticket options are available with a premium pass for $7 and reserved tables for $70. Those tickets can be purchased online, but ticket purchase or download is not necessary for entry. The doors to this event will open at 7pm on December 2 at the Grand Stafford Theatre.
