ALBUM: VESSELS ARTIST: Starset Released: January 20, 2017 by Devika Singh
A
s the New Year gets into gear, people start looking for fresh beats to rock to, and new music starts taking the racks. Four-member rock band Starset came out with its second studio album, “Vessels,” on January 20. The group originated in Columbus, Ohio, in 2013 and released its debut album, “Transmissions,” in 2014. They soon began to attract attention from alternative metal and rock listeners; and their latest album is targeted toward pop fans, as well. Rocksound.tv compares “Vessels” to the sci-fi genre, as the songs are based on technical sound effects. The 15-piece album can be compared to the stylings of nu metal band Skillet and alternative rock group Thirty Seconds to Mars. The contemporary tunes certainly reflect a futuristic message from space with a pop twist, including words like “satellite,” “gravity,” and “orbit.” So look at 2017 with futuristic ears and give a listen to “Vessels.” Starset will surely transport you to the stars.

DANI KANA
From the plains of Texas to the rolling hills of California, I sat down with local business owner and my best friend, Dani Kana, for a look inside her journey to being one of the leading retailers in the Brazos Valley. Her ambitious personality and eye for style has brought her a long way since opening the doors to her boutique Merge, with best friend Tara Miller in the spring of 2010. Since the days of being a young business owner, a second boutique by the name of Pine has joined the family. With the ever changing trends in women’s fashion and the fast pace lifestyle, Dani Kana has decided to uproot from her seemingly slower paced lifestyle here in College Station, to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. I sat down with my partner in crime to discuss her big move to LA, what’s next for her retail stores and all things style. CO: Thanks for sitting down with me before the BIG move to Los Angeles! I’m not going to lie, I’m happy you’re pursuing this new journey, however I hate to see you go! Why the decision to leave College Station? DK: I’m just at a point in my life where I want to explore what is out there in the universe. I love traveling and experiencing new cultures, so this move is a reflection of that. College Station will always be a second home to me though, plus I will be back for business and markets often! CO: You and Tara have come a long ways since opening the doors to Merge over 7 years ago. What has been the most exciting part of building your retail brand?
DK: Honestly, my business partner and I genuinely love fashion. So to be able to work in this industry for a living has felt less like a job, and more like a vacation. Outside of being able to have a job that you genuinely love doing everyday, I would say opening our second store Pine has been another exciting moment for us. CO: Both Merge & Pine offer women’s clothing, but can you tell readers how they are different? DK: Absolutely. Both stores have options for any type of women, however Merge offers fashionable clothing and accessories all at a price point under $50! Which is great for the college girl who is wanting to stay on top of trends and still save money. Pine offers premium products and designer brands that you can only get in larger cities such as, Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade, Rachel Zoe and House of Harlow. This is great for the girl who loves her designers, but doesn’t want to drive out of town or wait for it to come in online! CO: How would you define your personal style? DK: That’s a great question. I would have to say my personal style is sort of “high-low” inspired. Meaning I love a good high-end piece like any other girl, but some of my favorite things hanging in my closet are actually vintage finds and things from thrift shops. Those mixed together are usually an accurate definition on my personal style.
CO: Name one item in your closet that you couldn’t live without. DK: Wow that is a tough one and almost impossible for me to answer! However, if I had to pick one item I would probably have to say my Saint Laurent heels. Every girl should own at least one good pair of heels that never go out of style and can be worn with just about anything! CO: Any suggestions for the girls out there looking for some fashion or style advice? DK: Invest in a good pair of denim that fits your body type. You can never go wrong with a pair of jeans that fit good in all the right places! Plus they are a staple items in every woman’s wardrobe and never go out of style. CO: What is the future looking like for Merge & Pine in 2017? DK: Tara and I have some really exciting plans in store for this next year and are looking forward to sharing them all with our awesome and loyal customers very soon! Make sure and stay connected to our instagram accounts in the next few weeks to find out what those are!

asey Donahew Band, led by former Texas A&M student/ UT Arlington graduate Casey Donahew, has carved out a place in the Texas music scene as one of the largest names in their genre. Casey Donahew Band is well-known among a large audience, but to many fans they are irreplaceable. Songs about love, loss, home, and Texas fill their albums, and although the themes are classic to the Texas Country genre, fans feel a certain attachment to the way Casey Donahew Band captures the truth behind Texas Country music. Their most recent album release “All Night Party” dropped in August of last year and sold 11,000 copies in the first week. Casey Donahew Band has gained popularity in recent years while staying true to their roots. The band has performed in College Station multiple times and they will be back to play at Hurricane Harry’s on January 27, accompanied by fellow country music artist Josh Ward. Ward, a Houston native, has had multiple #1 singles and brought home the Texas Regional Radio Music Awards Song of the Year in 2016 for “Whiskey & Whitley.” He will be a name to continue to pay attention to in the future and someone we can expect big things from in the Texas music scene. Country music fans everywhere rave about the live performances they experience from these two artists. An engaging atmosphere helps bring the music to life and gets the audience on their feet to dance the night away. These powerhouse musicians are expected to make this a concert full of some the best music that Texas country has to offer. Texas Country fans that are not familiar with Casey Donahew Band or Josh Ward could compare the music to Cody Johnson, Kyle Park, Stoney LaRue, or William Clark Green. Tickets for this event can be purchased online, at Cavender’s Boot City, or Aggieland Outfitters on University Dr. for $10 each. Hurricane Harry’s will open it’s doors at 9pm on January 27.

SCULPTURAL CANVASES:
The Heavens Bend to Meet Us by Luke Murray
A
rchitecture is commonly seen as an art-form, creating structures of material into large – often glamorous – works of art. It’s not too often that the two mediums are switched in their roles, bringing the architecture into the art instead of the other way around. However, Texas Tech educator David Chapman Lindsay has done just that. With his latest architectural art gallery, “The Heavens Bend to Meet Us,” Lindsay focuses on the relationship between his canvases and the human elements depicted on them. Lindsay spent some time living in Northern Italy, it was there that he first became inspired to begin constructed these elaborate pieces of art. “I had the opportunity to live in northern Italy for an extended period” said Lindsay. “This time was not devoted to the creation of artwork, or even for viewing the art of that country. But living there, I could not help but be transformed. I was given a view of how perception of ourselves may be molded by the shape and structure of the space that surrounds us. I became enamored with architectural space; not with architecture as a thing in itself, but the space as a tool to tell us something about ourselves.” Originally, Lindsay focused on paintings that had elements referencing those of stained-glass windows. Eventually, the canvases he constructed became larger and more elaborate. The depictions began to cross planes of space and into more three-dimensional forms, creating an architectural element between the viewer and the piece.

MAROON WEEKLY • Jan. 25, 2017 • MAROONWEEKLY.COM
“My work has developed to focus on the interaction between painted images of the human form and the structured surfaces upon which the figures are depicted,” said Lindsay. “The architectural space of the canvas is used as a metaphor for those cultural, social, religious, etc. influences that manipulate the way we perceive ourselves and others. This structure also coaxes the viewer into a dance with the imagery, a dance in which the imagery is understood not just by the eyes, but also by the body; moving in space around the painting.” You can view this gallery yourself at The Reynolds Gallery on the second floor of Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center. The exhibit will remain at Reynolds until February 25th and is open to the public Tuesday – Friday from 9:00am – 8:00pm, and Saturday – Sunday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. Admission is free.

A&M OFF TO ROUGH START IN SEC PLAY BY CHRIS SHEPPERD
C
lose games. That is the modus operandi for the Aggie Men’s Basketball Team. The Aggies (10-8) are just 3-6 this season in games decided by 10 points or less. Three of those losses are in SEC play where the Aggies are off to a pedestrian 2-5 start. Let’s be honest, it hasn’t been pretty for the Aggies who came into the season as the defending SEC regular season champions. But this is clearly a different team. Household names like Danuel House, Jalen Jones, and Alex Caruso are no longer on the roster. All moving on to pursue the NBA. But maybe the tides are turning. A&M is on a 1 game winning streak. OK, one game isn’t a streak, but we will take what we can get. That win comes in somewhat controversial fashion. Georgia was at Reed Arena last saturday with a 10 point lead and two minutes remaining in the game. Then the Aggies took over. The Aggies took the lead with 16.5 seconds left. On the next possession Georgia brought the ball up the court and set up for the final shot.
AGGIE BASKETBALL
But then the clock malfunctioned with 5.6 seconds remaining, except no one noticed. Play continued, a foul was called on A&M sending Georgia to the line with a chance to take the lead. It was at this point that the officials went back and checked the clock. They determined too much time had run off the clock prior to the foul being called. Just like that, the game was over. Aggies win. “Our kid (Frazier) looks up and thinks he has time to make a play, but he doesn’t. I don’t know who stopped the clock; I’d like to know, Georgia Coach Mark Fox said after the game. A&M has a midweek game against Ole Miss (Jan. 25) before heading to #7 West Virginia. If the Aggies want to even think about being in the discussion for March Madness, they need to get the job done on the court. A win on the road over a top 10 team would be a great place to start. “I have seen them win and I have seen them lose, but I have never seen them quit. We shall soon see.

Hello Savv ::Handmade Jewelry by Savannah::
S
avannah Griffin comes from a long line of Longhorn fans, but she didn’t let that keep her from attending school at Texas A&M. That free spirit and sense of adventure has been a prerequisite as she enters into a new space crafting custom jewelry for any girl on the go. We had the chance to sit down with Savannah and talk about where her inspiration comes from. We have a feeling you won’t be able to get her out of your head. MW: Where did you get the idea to start making jewelry?
@MAROONWEEKLY
SG: I got the idea to start making jewelry from my mom. She is really creative and makes lots of things like keychains, home decor, and charm bracelets. we were out shopping for her business and I told her that she should make different types of necklaces to appeal to a younger audience, and she told me that I should be the one to make them. So she got me started and has taught me so much. MW: Do you make all of your pieces by hand? What is that process like? SG: Yes everything is handmade by me. Every bead, stone, and chain is hand picked. I spend my free time shopping on Harwin st in Houston to gather all of the supplies that I need, and then I start from scratch. I turn on some music and just go. What I love about the process is that each necklace is different so they are each unique to you.
MW: We love it. Who comes up with the designs for the jewelry? Where do you get your inspiration? SG: I also design each necklace. I have a huge love for Shawn Mendes! (I’m basically a 13 year old girl) And that’s where I get most of my inspiration from. I will listen to his music and a design will just come so easily, and it’s awesome to kind of bring that song to life. Some necklaces have that edgy feel for a night out, and some are fun and colorful for the beach, and some you can wear with an everyday outfit and never get tired of it. Just like listening to your favorite song over and over. I really hope I can bring that kind of vibe to people when they wear my designs. MW: If you could describe your design style in 3 words, what would they be? SG: Fun, unique, chic. MW: Do you have a favorite piece from your current collection? What makes it so special? SG: I really love the Mercy necklace because it’s so different and there’s so much detail that goes into it. Each bead and stone are so unique. But my favorite piece from my collection would be the Patience Y necklace because it’s so simple and it’s one of those that you can wear everyday for any event.

RUSSIAN BALLET
by Linley Stringer
@ RUDDER AUDITORIUM
T
he world-renowned Russian Ballet is spreading its magic in College Station on February 1 in Rudder Auditorium performing the Spanish classic, “Don Quixote.” After its formation in Moscow in 1989, the Russian Ballet has quickly risen in global esteem as one of the top ballet companies in the world. With 50 of the best ballerinas Russia has to offer, they are sure to dazzle audiences with their grace and talent. Despite the youth of this company, Russian Ballet groups have formed a distinguishable niche in the world of high-class entertainment. The Russian style of ballet is distinct in its form and is rich in Russian tradition. Among their many accolades, the company boasts an impressive repertoire of all of the major ballet shows from “the father of classical ballet,” Marius Pepita. In addition to choreographing the ballet version of “Don Quixote,” he also choreographed “The Sleeping Beauty” and “The Nutcracker.” The story of “Don Quixote” is a narrative of deep romance and chivalry. In its original form, “Don Quixote” is a book written in 1605 during the Spanish Golden Age. It was altered to be put in a ballet medium in 1869 by the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the predecessor to this Russian Ballet company. The tale involves a man by the name of Don Quixote who is so saddened by the death of chivalry–and slightly deluded by all the romance stories he’s read–he sets out to right the wrongs of the world. The performance takes major scenes from the book to form into a ballet. You can expect dazzling scenes that display the expertise of the artists, it would be no surprise to see this performance do justice to “Don Quixote” because of the rich history with Russian ballets. Runtime for the ballet is two hours, which includes a twenty minute intermission. Ticket prices range from $13 to $45 depending on location and the show starts at 7:30pm on February 1. Take a break from the week and step into another world with the Russian Ballet.

B
aked Chicken. People are always looking for something different to do with baked chicken. Why? Because it just so happens to be a total snooze-fest. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are boring on their own, no matter how perfectly you cook them. Facts are facts: chicken needs a little love when it comes to the flavor department. Like most things that require a little sprucing up, accessories don’t typically hurt one bit. In this case, we will be dressing up our chicken breasts with sautéed onions and melty Colby Jack cheese. Yes, please. The real beauty of it is that it’s not going to require that much more effort or mess. The onions are sautéed in the same pan that the chicken breasts are seared and baked in, and beyond that, all that’s left is to grate some cheese to top it all off. It’s delicious, it’s easy and it’s anything but boring. Please, enjoy. For more exciting ways to spruce up your chicken breasts, go to TheAnthonyKitchen.com and click the “Chicken” category. 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 tablespoon + ¼ cup Canola oil, separated 4 teaspoons TAK House Seasoning (recipe at TheAnthonyKitchen.com) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 yellow onions, halved and thinly sliced 1 1/3 cups Colby Jack cheese, freshly grated Preheat oven to 350° and have ready a baking dish just large enough to house the chicken breasts.
Add two chicken breasts to a gallon-sized, freezer-safe zip top bag. Press air out of the bag, seal it and using the smooth end of a meat mallet, or a rolling pin, pound out the the chicken breast until it is a ½” thick and of uniform thickness. Remove from the bag, set aside and repeat with remaining chicken breasts. Remove any loose flaps of chicken with a sharp knife and discard, or reserve for another use. Pat chicken breasts dry with a paper towel and drizzle with 1 tablespoon of Canola oil. Season both sides of each breast with a 1/2 teaspoon of TAK House Seasoning and pat to adhere. In a large, oven-safe sauté pan, heat a ¼ cup of oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil has come to temperature, add the butter. Immediately after the foaming has resided, add chicken breasts, taking care not to overcrowd the pan. Sear 5-6 minutes, without moving or jostling, until it has developed a golden-brown color. Turn and allow to sear on opposite side for about 4-5 minutes more until golden in color as well. Remove from the pan, place chicken in a baking dish and repeat with the two remaining chicken breasts. Add the onions to the pan and sauté, gently scraping up any browned bits left over from the chicken. Allow to cook for 10-15 minutes, until they begin to take on a dark caramel color. Remove from heat and spoon onions over the chicken breasts. Top each breast with a 1/3 of a cup of cheese, slightly pinching it together as you place it on top. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Allow to cool slightly and serve.
