nlike most musicians, Max Stalling hadn’t known from a young age that he would be creating music. A Texas native, Stalling grew up in south Texas before attending Texas A&M University for his undergraduate and graduate studies. After graduating from Texas A&M in 1991 with a master’s degree in Food Science, Stalling relocated to the Dallas area where he worked for corporate companies like FritoLay. In Dallas, Stalling found a community of American music when he discovered the Three Teardrops Tavern and KNON radio station. It was around this time that Stalling began writing country music songs inspired by artists such as Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, and Townes Van Zandt. He became a well-known presence in the singer/songwriter scene, and it wasn’t long before he took to the stage and began touring with the very artists who inspired his sound. Stalling now even has his own star on the South Texas Music Walk of Fame in Corpus Christi. Stalling has currently released eight albums, two of which are live ones. His debut album, “Comfort in the Curves,” established his sound and style as an artist through its twangy vocals and authenticity. One of his earlier albums from 2010, “Home to You,” was produced by Grammy winner Lloyd Maines, and it went on to earn nominations for Best Album and Best Male Vocal at the 2011 Lonestar Music Awards. Stalling’s latest album, “Home to You,” was released in 2015 and is considered by Country Chart Magazine to be the best recording of his career. In the age of pop culture and dance music, Stalling delivers a sound that is uniquely Texan, enlaced with the fresh roots of classic country. On February 25, Max Stalling will return to play at the Grand Stafford Theatre in Bryan before heading over to Aledo. It’ll be a night of good ole fashioned Texas Country that will keep your fight tapping and introduce you to a few of your new favorite songs. Tickets are $15 and the doors open at 7pm.

SPRING BREAK: Camping Tips & Tricks
S
kipping out the beach trip and opting to camp this spring break? Here’s our guide to staying a happy camper while roughing it in the woods with friends. Regardless if you’ve been camping or not, this tips and ideas should be a good place to start. Since Texas can’t make up it’s mind when it comes to the weather, pack for most or all seasons, because you don’t want to be roughing it the week that Texas decides to freeze over. To save space, pack things in plastic storage boxes–those big ones hiding in your garage can come in handy to stay organized and space savvy. Ziplock bags also come in handy, and you can use your coolers for storage after you’ve eaten all the food inside them. What happens in the woods usually ends up not staying in the woods, so be prepared with a first aid kit stocked with everything you need. It’s also not a bad idea to bring some sunscreen and insect repellant for protection under the sun and by the campfire.
Don’t break the bank on your camping trip: pick up a cheap hanging shoe organizer to keep things off of your table and out of the way. It’s easy access to cooking utensils, sunscreen, and other necessities without having to clutter your already limited table space. Using an old sheet as a tablecover can save time and it won’t blow away like a typical tablecloth does. Water jugs come in handy in many ways. Freeze your water jug instead of using ice that melts quickly in your cooler, and you can drink it later. Once you’re done with your jug, it can double as a lantern if you drop a glow stick or flashlight in it. Camp life can be made easier when exploring simple but effective tips and tricks this Spring Break season. Get creative, use things multiple times, and enjoy the great Texas outdoors.

Texas Beach Guide A
s Spring Break quickly approaches, heading to the beach and blowing off steam crosses everyone’s mind, from young college students to families. Escape the crowds and busy traffic this March in prime locations all across Texas. We’ve come up with a list of cool towns and beaches along the Texas coast great for anyone to enjoy. BOCA CHICA BEACH 6.5 HOURS FROM COLLEGE STATION Tucked away and hidden behind the city of Brownsville, the 1,054 acres of untouched wetland and beach area are owned by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. If you’re searching for a perfect getaway far from noisy hotels and crazy spring breakers, enjoy the coast of Boca Chica Beach. No shoes, no shirt, and no tourists. PORT ARANSAS 4.5 HOURS FROM COLLEGE STATION Located about 180 miles from San Antonio, Port Aransas is a family-friendly coastal location in central Texas. With a rich European past, the town has a number of historical landmarks perfect for exploring. Family excursions on a catamaran, fishing tours, nature adventures, or a simple day at the beach are all activities that can be enjoyed at Port A.
14
ROCKPORT BEACH 3 HOURS 45 MINUTES FROM COLLEGE STATION
PADRE ISLAND 4.5 HOURS FROM COLLEGE STATION
Rockport is located in the Aransas Bay. With playgrounds available for children and a popular 800 foot pier located on the north end of the shore, this is a great location for a day at the beach. If you’re thinking about bringing your pet, keep in mind no animals are allowed here.
Nope, not South Padre Island. This barrier island is located in Corpus Christi and is known as the most underdeveloped beach in the world! With its laid back and relaxing vibes, it won’t be too hard to destress here this spring break. Mini-golf and kayaking are very popular pastimes at Padre, but you could always just kick back on the beach. Remember, you’re on island time.
CRYSTAL BEACH: 3 HOURS FROM COLLEGE STATION Crystal Beach is right by Galveston and falls on the Bolivar Peninsula. Every year, the Texas Crab Festival is hosted here, where lots of, you guessed it, crab is available to attendees. While here, you experience catching a 30 minute ferry to Galveston and soaking up some sunrays on the shining beaches.
SURFSIDE BEACH 2.5 HOURS FROM COLLEGE STATION The locals call it “Surfside.” Located in the Brazoria County, Surfside Beach has a reputation for being one of Texas’ cleanest beaches. Enjoy the free beach-front parking and bonfire building when you visit this gem.
MUSTANG ISLAND 4.5 HOURS FROM COLLEGE STATION
MATAGORDA BAY NATURE PARK 3 HOURS FROM COLLEGE STATION
Stretching from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas, the island is named after the wild horses that roamed the land for hundreds of years. Activities like camping, paddling along the Mustang Island Park Paddling Trail, and enjoying the shoreline are the island’s most popular activities.
Matagorda, Texas holds one of the state’s largest parks, ringing it at about 1,600 acres. This peninsula is where the Texas Colorado River and Gulf of Mexico meet. The park is known as one of the best birding areas in the nation, so don’t forget you binoculars.

Hill Country Spring Break With the temperature on the rise after this mild Texas winter, it’s time to start planning the best spring break yet. And what better place to spend it than the Texas Hill Country? FREDERICKSBURG Complete with gorgeous scenery, wineries, and shopping, it is a great place to take a small road trip to. Best known for being the wine country of Texas, there are many wineries and even a few breweries that are a must to visit. If spring break only consists of a weekend and you’re unable to take the week off, this is a destination to keep in mind! RIO FRIO FEST This is your place for floating and foot tapping. Filled with artists that are dominating the red dirt sector of the country music genre. Big names include: Cody Johnson, Cory Morrow, and William Clark Green–all names we know and love. These three have been around and played their fair share of smaller gigs that have helped propel them to the top. Take on the Frio River and Concan a few months early this March to test the waters. WIMBERLEY ZIPLINE Nestled between San Antonio and Austin lies the town of Wimberley, which is also home to a fifteen mile long zipline. This is a great way to suit the inner adrenaline junky as one soars over the canyons
and creeks that make the hill country as unique as it is. SAN ANTONIO Home of the Alamo, haunted hotels, and the River Walk, San Antonio is sure to have a little bit of entertainment for everyone. Not only are the tourist attractions a must see, but there are also many other world-class attractions. The San Antonio Zoo is historically one of the best zoos in the nation and Fiesta Texas will satisfy all those roller coaster cravings. DRIPPING SPRINGS A cute little town that is definitely a hidden gem with a reputation for incredible stargazing. This is a sure way to spend quality time with your friends or family on the camp ground underneath the big and bright stars that make Texas skies one of a kind. AUSTIN Whether you’re a history buff, an outdoorsman, or a food junkie (or anything in between), Austin will have something for you. Rainey Street is famous for laidback bars and a strong food truck game. The Barton Creek Greenbelt is almost 13 miles of hiking along a natural creek and you can enter at a trailhead minutes from downtown Austin. And, of course, you can always tour the Capitol, explore the Bullock Texas State History Museum, and look on at the Governor’s Mansion.

GRUB BURGER’S MENU REVAMP
hile we were off enjoying holiday break and transitioning into the new semester, Grub Burger Bar was cooking up delicious additions to their menu.
Known for the delicious burgers Grub creates, it is the ideal location for all occasions. Whether you’re going on a first date, combining a burger with business, or need a post-workout pick-me-up Grub is your place to go.
They’ve already put a lot of energy into their loyal menu full of fan-favorites like the Lockhart Legend, Harlem Chicken Tenders (don’t forget the Mississippi Comeback Sauce), and spiked Bourbon & Caramel shake, but they’ve added a few new specialty items to their already stacked menu. If you feel the need to start lunch with a snack or surprise your table during “Happier Hour,” then go for the Chorizo Quezo. Not only is there chorizo in the dip, but also ground beef and it’s topped with homemade guacamole, then served with tortilla chips accented with lime salt.
When searching for a lighter option, Grub has you covered with carefully crafted bowls, a part of the new menu. Whether you are going for California Chicken or Salmon Filet, you will find that eating clean doesn’t have to be boring. The avocado salad brings it all to the table with a black bean and corn medley, Campari tomatoes, sprouts, queso fresco, and a delectable ancho lime vinaigrette.
A quick chicken sandwich is easy to come by, but we all want something freshly made with straightforward simplicity. We found exactly that in the California Chicken Sandwich. For starters, it is on a wheat bun, which Grub bakes fresh every hour! The chicken sandwich comes with the basics: bacon, Swiss, sprouts and avocado, but the chipotle aioli stole the show. Don’t pass up the sides like the Brussels sprouts that are tossed in ancho lime vinaigrette and topped with queso fresco or their popular twist on sweet potato fries. Not only does Grub Burger Bar make eating fresh easy, but they’ve taken care of the ordering as well. Download their App, available for Apple and Android, “Grub Love.” Earn points while you eat, and if you’re on the move, take advantage of their online ordering option. No matter where your day is taking you, it’s always a good time for Grub!

The Clothesline Muse
O
ne of the next performances to grace the stage of Rudder Auditorium brings with it a celebration of family and heritage. The Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts at Texas A&M University welcomes the upcoming show, “The Clothesline Muse on March 1 in Rudder Auditorium at 7pm. “The Clothesline Muse is a play that emerged from an original dance routine created by Dr. Kariami Welsh, and tells the story of laundress Grandma Blu and her granddaughter Mary Mack who aspires to be a screenwriter. Mary has little appreciation for her grandmother’s stories and family culture, and it isn’t until she is handed down Grandma Blu’s laundry memorabilia that she is forced to address her heritage. Mary is then left with the challenge of pursuing her career while trying to uphold her grandmother’s legacy. “The Clothesline Muse examines the dynamic relationship between women and family as it transforms the simple act of hand washing clothes into a moving image of song and dance. Throughout the performance, the clothesline acts as the play’s central metaphor connecting generations of family and values. The play stars six time Grammy award nominee jazz musician and actress Nnenna Freelon with vibrant kinetic tissue paper artwork by Freelon’s daughter, Maya Freelon Asante. The show also features Tyanna West as Mary Mack. This spell-binding production has been performing since 2013 and will soon be visiting College Station before heading over to San Antonio for a performance at Jo Long Theatre. “The Clothesline Muse is a performance that celebrates art, femininity, and family, but above all by Laura Simmons it works to foster in other families the desire to never stop talking about “what happened at the clothesline. Tickets can be bought online through the MSC Box Office and are regularly priced at $12 with $7 for student tickets.

MUSHROOM & ASPARAGUS BAKE
IN THE KITCHEN
W/ KELLY Kelly Anthony is a home chef, blogger and creator of TheAnthonyKitchen .com, where she shares recipes and specializes in refined comfort food .
E
at your vegetables: who didn’t get that one blasted on repeat as a child? I for one heard it many, many times, and can recall sitting alone in timeout at the dining room table, staring down at a mound of green, hanging onto every last bit of resistance within me. Even as a child, the problem was easily identifiable — those vegetables had lived in a can for quite some time, and simply put, they were gross. Growing up, we ate a lot of canned veggies, and it’s no wonder they didn’t excite me. The colors were hum-drum and the texture was mushy. Now, I’m not completely against canned items, but I try to avoid them, especially when it comes to side dishes. The fact is that preparing fresh vegetables doesn’t really take all that much more time, and the flavor and nutrients preserved within them is significant. My asparagus and mushroom bake is a healthy mix, perfect for busy folks, or anyone looking to up their side dish game. The asparagus stays vibrantly green and is cooked just to al dente. The mushrooms add a beautiful, earthy element, and burst with flavor as they absorb the butter and cook down to perfection. Use this dish as side or even as a topper for baked fish. It is versatile in application, and I can guarantee, with flavors like this, vegetables will no longer seem like a punishment. Enjoy. For fresh takes on vegetables, go to TheAnthonyKitchen.com and find the “On the Side” page.
MUSHROOM & ASPARAGUS BAKE INGREDIENTS: • 8 ounces white button mushrooms • 2 bunches asparagus, cut at a 1 1/2” bias • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt • Generous pinch black pepper • 4 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter, cut into tiny cubes METHOD: 1. Preheat oven to 425°. 2. Brush the mushrooms clean with a damp paper towels and cut into quarters. Set aside until ready to use. 3. Lay a large sheet of aluminum foil across a rimmed baking sheet. Add another sheet of aluminum foil to the baking sheet, laying it in the opposite direction. Add the mushrooms, asparagus, olive oil, salt and pepper to the middle of the top foil sheet and toss to combine. Dot the top with butter cubes and enclose in foil, creating a little package and wrapping tightly. 4. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or just until the mushrooms are cooked through. Toss vegetables in the juices accumulated at the bottom of the packet, serve and enjoy.
