pring has sprung and sunny days call for bright spirits, including the spirit of giving back. This latest app, “Movements,” makes doing so simple and efficient. According to the AppAdvice website, it based on the principle that small acts of kindness, when executed by a large number of people, can make an impact. Upon installation, the app provides users with “movements,” or campaigns in categories like Education, Human Services and International. To donate, users can add a credit or debit card to their account and donate spare change and the app will round the sum to a dollar amount. With every swipe of a user’s card, the spare change can change the course of someone’s life overseas in the form of vaccines, clean water or even a full meal. Movements include campaigns for building homes, raising funds for school supplies and teachers’ wages in developing countries and sponsoring children and orphans in Uganda. Download the app and lead a movement of your own.

MOVIE REVIEW: BEFORE I FALL by Celeste Tamez

B

ased on the novel by Lauren Oliver, “Before I Fall” is a coming of age film that takes a supernatural twist on the saying “live everyday like it’s your last.” The movie follows the typical “it” girl as she continues to relive one of the last days of her life, figuring out how to stop it. Set in the Pacific Northwest, Samantha Kingston, played by actress Zoey Deutch, is a high school senior who dominates the teenage population along with three of her closest friends. She seems to have it all: great friends, a great boyfriend, and a potentially perfect future ahead of her. But Sam’s life and future are jeopardized when her and her friends appear to die in a car accident. The film highlights the common stereotypes seen in a high school setting and the unique interactions between them. At first, the viewer is exposed to these various characters at a glance, only to later realize they are the key individuals who can help Sam stop the living nightmare. The specifics causing the main character to relive the day of her death were not entirely clarified for the viewer. However, for book lovers, the film adaptation closely resembles Oliver’s young-adult novel. Additionally, a forewarning to families heading out to see this film, the dialogue is somewhat strong for children under the age of 14. In this teenage “Groundhog Day,” Sam eventually realizes she needs to seek outside of herself and fix the relationships with family, friends and peers. The character development and overall transformation in the life-and-death journey is truly moving. This well-acted movie delivers a meaningful message on the importance of second chances and redemption.

Album: DIVIDE Artist: ED SHEERAN Released: MARCH 3 by Abby Newton

E

nglish singer/songwriter, Ed Sheeran, released his newest full-length record, “Divide,” on March 3. Previous albums by Sheeran shook the music scene with Sheeran carving out his own place in the industry and becoming one of the most well known artists of the past few years. “Divide” is already the top-selling album of 2017 and sold over 300,000 copies in the first week after the release date. It features a mixture of sounds that are all classic Ed Sheeran. Slow, love ballads like “Happier,” “Perfect,” and “Supermarket Flowers” steal the hearts of listeners, and upbeat tracks like “What do I know?,” “Galway Girl,” and “New Man” are the perfect summer anthems. The album also includes the highly popular and familiar singles “Castle on a Hill” and “Shape of You” that had Sheeran fans anticipating the full album release. Much like past Ed Sheeran releases, “Divide” is an album that we expect to withstand time and hold its place in the industry for years to come.

f you’re looking for a night of true Americana rock infused music, look no further than the latest Grand Stafford event. On March 24, Keeton Coffman will be opening for Micky and the Motorcars at the Downtown Bryan theater.

Keeton Coffman, born and raised in Bryan, is reviving heartland rock and roll with his new music. A songwriter first and foremost, Coffman wants his music to transport his audience and provide them with an escape, if only for an hour or two. His latest album, “Killer Eyes,” was released in September of 2016 and creates an image of an open country road, the carefree southern nostalgia of Coffman’s childhood and youth that he works to recreate. Coffman’s sound is the perfect prelude to Micky and the Motorcars, an alternative Texas country band. The band consists of brothers Micky Braun (vocals, acoustic guitar), Gary Braun (vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica), Mark McCoy (bass), Kris Farrow (guitars, saxophone), and Shane Vannerson (drums, percussion). Micky and the Motorcars have been performing for over eight years and have released five studio albums, three of which were self-released, while the remaining albums were released under the Smith Music Group label. Micky and the Motorcars have described their sound as “a little rough around the edges” but that’s exactly why they have such a strong following. Having faced a myriad of trials and tribulations both as individuals and a collective music group, their sound echoes what it means to have loved and lost in this world. Micky and the Motorcars still write over 90 percent of their songs, producing content that is raw and full of integrity in a way unique to Texas country. Like Coffman, the universal, honest sound of Micky and the Motorcars reaches out and connects to every listener. Doors to the show open at 7pm, and the music starts at 8. Tickets can be bought online for $10 or at the door for $12.

pring break flew by in the blink of an eye, and now it’s back to the grind of everyday life. In the midst of returning to school and work, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. On March 24, the Randy Rogers Band is coming back to College Station. The band, along with guest star Red Shahan, will be performing at Hurricane Harry’s at 9pm. Kicking off their 2017 tour on March 10, the country super stars plan to perform in cities across Texas, California, and Arizona. By the age of six, his great-grandmother taught him to play the piano, and Rogers began writing his own songs and learning chords on the guitar when he was 11 years old. His past experience spent in a backing band led the artist to form his own group as the frontman. Along with some friends from college, the Randy Rogers Band was born. They released their first ever album, “Live at Cheatham St. Warehouse,” named after a bar in San Marcos. In 2002, the Randy Rogers Band recorded and released their first studio album entitled “Like It Used to Be.” After releasing two additional albums, the country group, consisting of Geoffrey Hill on guitar, Jon Richardson on bass, Brady Black and Les Lawless on drums, signed to the major-label Mercury Nashville the next year. In the summer of 2007, Rolling Stones magazine listed the band among artists like U2 and the Stones in the category Top Ten Must-See Artists.

Not all that long ago, my guy and I had ourselves a little Saturday daydate and I found myself mulling over the cocktail list, unable to make up my mind per the usual, until my eye came across a drink entitled “Pimm’s Cup.” Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to give it go, and lucky for me, it was a very enjoyable drink. In fact, I kinda wish I hadn’t enjoyed so many. Whoopsy daisies. Reel it in, Kelly. It had just enough sweet and just the right amount of sour. The cucumber added to it a refreshing feel, along with the bubbles rising up from what I could imagine was likely ginger ale. In fact, this cocktail was so pleasant, that I decided I needed to get the recipe under my belt.

With KELLY

’m one of those people who has to stare at a drink menu for a solid 5-10 minutes before I can make up my mind when it comes to a cocktail. If we’re talking wine, no problem there. Hit me with something dry, red and preferably from Argentina or Italy, and bingbang-boom, I’m a happy gal. However, if the wine selection is scarce, I typically take a gander at the specialty cocktails.

IN THE KITCHEN

I

Before crafting the classic cocktail, I wanted to understand exactly what Pimm’s was. Turns out it’s a liqueur. Ok, good to know, but what in the world is liqueur? Great question, me. Liqueurs still contain alcohol and are usually derived from vodka, gin, whiskey, etc., but are typically enhanced by other flavor components, and (more times than not) aren’t quite as harsh in taste as straight liquor. Pimm’s specifically is a gin-based liqueur with both herbal and fruity notes, and like I said before, a little sweet and surprisingly, well... very pleasant. Please, enjoy. Ingredients: 2 thinly sliced orange slices 3-4 thinly sliced cucumbers rounds 2 strawberries 2 ounces Pimm’s Juice of half a lemon 3-4 ounces ginger beer or ginger ale Sprig of mint for garnish, if desired Method: In a tall collins glass, add orange slices, cucumber rounds and whole strawberries. Top with ice to fill the glass. Pour over Pimms, lemon juice and ginger beer to fill the glass. Stir, garnish with mint and enjoy.
