pring is in full bloom and everyone is looking for new ways to spend weekends in the sun. A popular activity Texans enjoy is hiking, and the Bryan-College Station area is filled with parks with scenic hiking and biking trails. However, for the outdoor rookies, the app AllTrails provides every piece of information and new ideas for the activity. The app is mainly for hikers to find new trails with reviews, descriptions, and photos. Each trails page allows users to “check in,” receive directions, and save favorites. Trails pages also provide suggested hiking routes, distance, and elevation and can map the user’s trail. This feature also tracks the user’s distance over time and allows them to share with friends and fellow hikers. The elevation graph can also provide flatter routes, based on hiker’s preference. Grab some friends, pack a lunch, and step into hiking shoes to enjoy the sun and spring into the outdoors.

MOVIE REVIEW: LOGAN by Emily Taylor

“L

ogan” hit theaters on March 3 and has made its way to number one in the hearts of many old fans and new ones of the X-Men Series in a short period of time. Director James Mangold pulled inspiration from many old classics as he created what is supposedly the last of the Wolverine movies. No worries: Hugh Jackman is back as the Wolverine, but this film throws a twist on the iconic comic that many have followed through its evolving stages of life on the big screen. Accompanying Jackman for the first time are notable characters such as Professor Charles Xavier and for the first time, a little girl named Laura (Dafne Keen). The girl, who is a mutant with powers like the Wolverine himself, is being hunted, but she can take care of herself, as she continuously tries to prove. Begrudgingly, the Wolverine not only takes care of her, but also the ailing Professor Xavier. Throughout the film, Logan holds to his history of taking care of others, though the odds continuously stack up against him as he hits obstacle after obstacle. Be aware: this movie is gritty, bloody, and explicit in its language, earning it an R rating. Die-hard fans of the franchise will herald this as the Wolverine as he was meant to be, and Jackman delivers an incredible performance of an angry but resilient Logan. “Logan” is definitely one that loyal Wolverine fans will be first in line to see, but don’t fret if you’re not an old fashioned comic book lover: it’s worthy of the screen time regardless of your knowledge of the backstory. While hard to watch in some aspects, the film comes to a satisfying close as the end credits roll.

H

ip-hop/rap artist Drake released his highly anticipated album, “More Life” on March 18. The release is branded as a playlist rather than album, but it quickly soared to the #1 top album on ITunes. The conceptual playlist is different than his previous releases and includes a mix of pop, club trap, and ambient R&B. You might not find all 22 songs on the album to be a hit, but with such a broad range of tunes, you are likely to find a few favorite jams. The opener to the album, “Free Smoke” and the smooth disco song, “Passionfruit” have already proven to be some of the most popular tracks from the playlist. Drake consistently uses global beats and international artists to carry most of the weight throughout “More life.” Drake also employs popular rap artists: 2 Chainz, Kanye West, Young Thug, Sampha, and Travis Scott along with lesser known artists, Jorja Smith and DJ Black Coffee. Yeezus fans will go crazy over his collaboration with Drake in the song, “Glow.” “More Life” provides Drake fans with a conceptual playlist filled with diverse tunes and talented collaborators and won’t be something you’ll want to miss.

ONCE @ RUDDER AUDITORIUM

he award-winning Broadway musical “Once” is an unforgettable tale about following your dreams. The show features an ensemble of actors and musicians playing their own instruments live onstage. This unique story about how the power of music connects us all is coming to Rudder Auditorium. “Once” is a musical adaptation of the independent film under the same name. The story follows an Irish singer/songwriter in Dublin named “Guy,” who fixes vacuums at a shop he runs with his father by day, and performs his own music at local pubs by night. On the verge of giving up on his dreams, a Czech immigrant, “Girl,” walks into the bar, and, captivated by his love songs, urges him to never abandon his guitar or love of music. Coincidentally, she has a broken vacuum cleaner. As he fixes it, Girl pays him back in piano music she plays in a record shop. Guy and Girl work together over the course of a week to create beautiful music and, ultimately, fall in love. Their powerful chemistry takes his music on a journey of new heights, but their connection quickly develops into a deep and complex romance unlike any other.

by Celeste Tamez

At the 2012 Tony Awards, “Once” earned a total of eight accolades including Best Musical, Best Actor to Steve Kazee, and Best Direction of a Musical to John Tiffany. The original Broadway cast included stars such as Cristin Milioti, who starred in the television hit “How I Met Your Mother” as character Tracy Mosby, Ted Mosby’s wife. Additionally, the indie film the Broadway show is based off won an Oscar in 2007 for Best Original Song. This truly original Broadway show is a once in a lifetime experience that is both emotionally and theatrically captivating. The New York Times called it “a love affair with music” and emphasized how the show “uses song and dance in a way” that have yet to be experienced in an American musical. In a story where Guy quite literally meets Girl, “Once” takes viewers on a joy ride of magical music and love. The musical, running approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, will be at Rudder Auditorium on Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12 at 7:30pm. Tickets can be purchased online at boxoffice.tamu.edu. Don’t miss this theatrical experience!

Exclusive Interview: LeAnder’S Logan Rhea

L

eAnder, an American alternative rock band from Nashville, is performing at First Friday, where they will be celebrating their newest EP release. We had the opportunity to talk to the band’s bass player, Logan Rhea, to get all the inside information on their music, passions, and what drives them as a band. MW: In 2015, LeAnder went on a house tour that included College Station. What is the band’s connection to College Station and why was it chosen to be the Texas town for that tour? LR: Right, so our lead singer, Scott Anderle’s parents live out in College Station. They just moved there and his dad is finishing up his degree, so he is actually going to Texas A&M to get his degree. Scott’s dad met a guy named Sam who is involved in Young Life and knows a lot of people. Through him we were able to get the connection to do a house show that was basically like a benefit concert. It was with Young Life and it was a house show with waffles where we were able to raise money, and all the money people paid for waffles went to funding to send people to Young Life, specifically I believe it was for young single moms. So that is our main connection to College Station, and also I know that Scott’s fiance has family that lives in Bryan I think, so that is another connection we have to College Station.

MW: That sounds like a great fundraising concert and a great reason to play in College Station. LeAnder’s website identifies you as an American alternative rock band. How did the band develop its sound and were there any bands that had a significant influence on that? LR: Yeah, definitely, so we have a lot of different influences. Pop influences, rock influences, alternative influences. Our drummer, he is influenced mostly by Paramore, John Mayer, Trio, and Twenty-One Pilots. I am more influenced by Switchfoot, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Amberlin. And then the lead singer, Scott, he is more influenced by Needtobreathe, Relient K, and some of those type of bands. We pretty much just all came together and that’s how we formed our sound. We have songs that are singer/songwriter type songs, our songs range from rock to Christian, almost CCM influenced, and then we have some songs that are more alternative. Whenever I pitch it to people, I always say it is like a combination of Needtobreathe meets 30 Seconds to Mars. We are definitely really influenced by a nostalgic early 2000s rock with some of the pop indie rock bands, like Colony House–they are a huge influence on all of us. MW: Those are all great influences, and after listening to the EPs, I was able to recognize all of those bands’ influences in LeAnder’s unique sound. So,

your first EP released in 2016. What success was found through that EP and how would you say it impacted the growth of the band? LR: Well, we got featured on a Movie Pilot blog. That Ep is called ‘Invictus’ and it has three songs on it, all very different songs. There is a pop song, a rock song, and a singer/songwriter type song. Anyways, we had a music video that went along with “Steakhouse,” the pop song, and that is what was featured on Movie Pilot, which is a huge blog. One of the reasons we were featured is because Scott came up with this amazing idea for a story with the music video. That song is basically a retelling of the prodigal son story through a modern day twist featuring Darth Vader as the father figure and Luke Skywalker as the older brother and the younger brother as Batman because he lost his parents. So it is really a song that features the prodigal son story of acceptance, adoption, grace, and people coming back into your life. It is a song of second chances because Scott had gone through some stuff in his life where he had been shown grace even though he didn’t deserve it and he was given second chances, so it parallels the prodigal son with Scott’s personal life and some events that happened. MW: Very cool. So “The Tension” just dropped this month. How did that new release differ from “Invictus,” and on the other hand, how do you think the band maintained its sound from the first EP to the second? LR: ‘Invictus’ was us stepping out and basically saying, “Hey, we think we are supposed to do this and this is our first step at becoming a band.” Scott had really written all the songs and we just kinda played them on the record. “The Tension” was more of the band’s first official album where we all really contributed to songwriting. The first EP was more of Scott’s solo project featuring us stepping out as a band, but Phase 2 LeAnder featuring “The Tension” was a more mature sound. We have five songs instead of three, we have a wider dynamic, and an edgier modern rock sound that definitely defines us more as a band than Scott’s solo project. This one was more of a collective effort, we were featured on a lot more blogs and what we are really excited about is our music video. With this EP we were taking the step from starting to sustaining, and then our next project is going to be building momentum and carrying the momentum. Also, as far as lyrically, this has a lot more depth in the second EP, so that is why the album is called “The Tension.” Almost all of these songs are very inspired by real life events that the band has been going through. “The Change” was written out of the hardship of losing jobs and losing relationships that we went through, how sometimes there is beauty in the chaos and the surrender is where you find true peace of letting go. The first EP was done by a bunch of grad students and this new project was all mixed, mastered, and produced as a totally self-made project by our drummer Andrew Hall. There is a lot to say about this new record, we are really stoked. We have had these songs for a while, and one we are most excited about that is sort of the anthem of the band is “Feel My Bones.” This songs says life is too short to do what you don’t believe in so despite the chaos right now continue the course, go for your dreams and do what you believe in. MW: One thing I noticed when listening to the tracks was that there were such genuine messages in the lyrics. What are the passions of the band and what does LeAnder want fans and listeners to know about you as a band as well as individuals? Continued on Page 12

Those who adopt ducks and enter the race do not need to present in order to collect a prize. This will be a fun and different way to spend time with loved ones while getting in the competitive spirit with your favorite billed quackers.

LR: We are very passionate about using music as an outlet to explore deeper life questions such as faith, doubt, hope, dreams, things like that. We want to use our music as a platform to inspire others. Specifically we love creatives and dreamers, because Nashville is the land of dreamers, but also we want to invest in the younger generation. We all had musicians and artists above us who invested in our dreams so we try and do that on and off stage at our shows. This is to positively impact people by being authentic with our messages, as well as through our actions and interactions. The band has come up with a mission statement that is “We’re on a journey and an adventure of discovering what it means to be fully alive,” so we really want to invite our audience to join us on this wild adventure of what it means to be fully alive. The more we challenge that question and use songs to relay that message, we are able to see people impacted by it where they have hope again and a positive purpose for living. I don’t think we are only meant to survive in this life, I think we are supposed to thrive. MW: LeAnder will be performing at the Grand Stafford for First Friday along with The New Offenders, The Mammoths, and Honest Men. What can those attending expect from LeAnder at this show? LR: We work hard to make the performance entertaining and high energy. They can expect a lot of crowd involvement, a few anthems that involve different intros and outros, and they can expect at least one cover that will rock your socks off: an Elvis Presley cover of “Can’t Stop Falling in Love.” They can expect to have the most fun they are going to ever have on that Friday. This will be right in the heat of our first tour and our first time playing a real venue in Bryan, so we are stoked for this show. The Grand Stafford offers live music free on First Friday and the doors will open at 7pm. LeAnder as well as the other bands will be rocking out all night and hope you head out to see what they are all about and witness “The Tension” live.

Comeback Tour

KANM T

he Grand Stafford strives to welcome new and exciting performances each month, and April will be no exception. First Friday is a family friendly event in Downtown Bryan on the first Friday of every month. There are free concerts at most venues, art galleries to explore, and plenty of shops and cafes with extended hours. There is a large variety of things to enjoy on first Friday, but the Grand Stafford will be the place to be if you love live music like we do. Four bands, all with a foundation of rock mixed with unique twists and original sounds, will come together to create a stunning overall performance. The New Offenders, The Mammoths, LeAnder and Honest Men each bring something different to the stage but are similar enough to compliment one another. The New Offenders is a southern roots/rock band from Houston that began their journey as a band in August of 2014. The band solidified its membership, found the right line up, and set out to complete their debut album “Stones to Throw.” The album dropped this month and, as expected, the album is eclectic and captures the unique sound and nature of the New Offenders. The Mammoths, from Austin, enjoy blending elements of blues, rock, and psych into each of their songs. An unexpected jam session at SXSW in the Live Music Capitol of the World was all they needed to put all the pieces together, start their journey, and never look back. Honest Men is an indie/alternative rock band from Waco, TX. Their debut album “Okay Dreamer” released in January. Honest Men has been known to take an ordinary and familiar story and tell it in an extraordinary way. This band speaks to the listener’s’ soul and not only will the music replay in your mind days after, but Honest Men also aims to change you and make you question things you already know.

The Grand Stafford offers all of their First Friday events for free and will open its doors for the event at 7pm on Friday. While you are out and about in Downtown Bryan enjoying all our community has to offer, stop at the Grand Stafford to see what these bands are all about. MAROONWEEKLY.COM

ountry music is never short of an up-andcoming performer eager to make their mark on the star-studded industry. With fresh songs and a recent tour under her belt, Morgan Ashley is one of country music’s latest artists. The country singer/songwriter will be in College Station once again promoting her very first album and won’t be someone country music fans will want to ignore. The artist kicked off her music career with her start in the female country duo Morgan and Sara, originating here in College Station. Back in 2015, the two singers released their first album, featuring four original songs, at an EP release party. With their move to Nashville, the duo spread their good ole Texas country music as they performed in various locations and were able to develop their sound in the nation’s country music capital. Since going solo, Morgan Ashley found success while performing around the country’s most famous stage. With the duo no longer creating music together, Ashley is now in pursuit of defining herself as a country solo artist. At the tender age of 19, the singer/songwriter is a seasoned performer. Touring for a year has brought much success to her young career, with performances all over the state of Texas such as the Wildflower Festival in Richardson and the well-known Tootsie’s in Nashville. The singer/songwriter channels classic country artists such as Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill to shape her own sound. Playing her guitar, the artist exemplifies a new era of the country-pop with her young but knowledgeable voice. Her songs are a blend of mellow sounds and small town vibes. Morgan Ashley’s first solo EP will be released on April 6. In conjunction with Maverick 100.9’s Party on the Patio, the country singer’s selftitled album will be debuted this Thursday for eager listening ears. The EP Release Party will be held at Ozona’s Grill and Bar in College Station starting at 6pm, and you can check out her latest songs and new sound with live performances from the artist.

S

pring has sprung and the Brazos Valley is celebrating by adding new colors to the town. The eighth annual Downtown Street and Art Fair will be held in Downtown Bryan on April 8. A featured event of Texas A&M’s Family Weekend, the Fair strives to bring together artists from the area and beyond, and display the rich and lively Historic Downtown Bryan. The Street and Art Fair, held from 10am to 6pm, will feature artists and craftsmen from around the area with their creations on sale. The streets will provide live music and street performers to add to the Fair’s artistic flair. More than 30 artists from the state will have their art, sculptures, and jewelry on display. Interactive areas will be available for attendees to learn by demonstration and create their own art, and activities for children will be located at the Village Café Alley, including a bouncy house, balloon animals, henna tattoos, and face painting. The original pieces will make for memorable souvenirs, too.

On April 8, the George Bush Library will be hosting the annual College Station Easter Egg Hunt. This Easter Celebration is a long-standing tradition that has been held since 1982. Typically hosted by the Police Department, the Easter Celebration has evolved into one of the biggest events of the season, modeled after the famous annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This family fun event will include activities for children of all ages such as games, face painting, an Easter egg hunt, egg roll, egg toss, snacks and refreshments, as well as the chance to take photos with the Easter Bunny. The Fair is also to mean to bring awareness to Downtown Bryan’s renewal project to reconstruct the history in buildings. According to the Downtown Bryan Association, the highlight of the day will be the Steamroller Printmaking event. Teams of artists will be required to create prints on linoleum, which will then be transferred to paper by driving a roller— donated by Redtail Rental— over the design. Cost of admission is free and photos from previous years are available on the Downtown Street and Art Fair Facebook page. Parking and venue maps are available on the Downtown Bryan website. The Facebook page also contains information for volunteer sign-ups for short shifts on the day of the event. The Fair will start at 10am and will run through 6pm, but parking will be tight. Come to enjoy live street performances, spring shopping, and a variety of restaurants. Spend part your day with an artistic and enriching Aggieland Family Weekend in Downtown Bryan.

P

arty or no party, I adore a good ol’ antipasto platter any day of the week. Italian ingredients like marinated fresh Mozzarella and salty, piquant Sopressata have my heart. Not only are they full of tasty little bites, but they’re also beyond easy to make. The ingredients are typically store-bought items arranged on a single platter to come together in one big flavor explosion. As far as I’m concerned, there’s only one thing missing from an antipasto platter, and with zero regard of stating the obvious, I’m going to go ahead and say it: Pasta. Okay, okay...I know that’s kind of the point of the whole antipasto thing, but I just couldn’t help myself. And, if you don’t mind me saying so, the noodles kind of bring the whole thing together. Add a little Italian dressing to the mix, and I’d say we’ve got ourselves a zinger. This pasta salad is beyond easy to make. Since the majority of the ingredients are ready-made, the only work we are truly left with is a tidbit of chopping and boiling the pasta water. Shall I bring another bonus to the table? Gladly. In keeping with the original intent of the antipasto platter, it’s divine for entertaining as it can be made in advance and only gets better overnight. But wait, the goodness doesn’t stop there: No need to pull this recipe out solely for entertaining purposes. This salad rocks atop a bed of vibrant, crisp Romaine lettuce and also makes for a super satisfying lunch box treat. It’s an incredibly easy, quick, and multifunctional dish. Whip up a batch the next time you’re entertaining, or if you’re just in dire need of a lunchbox update, and enjoy.

PASTASALAD IN THE KITCHEN With KELLY

Ingredients: • 12 ounces tri-color Rotini • Jar (12 ounces) of marinated Cigliegine (fresh Mozzarella), drained and diced • Jar (12 ounces) of roasted red bell peppers in water, drained and finely diced • Jar (12 ounces) quartered & marinated artichoke hearts, drained and roughly chopped • 4 ounces Italian cured meat such as Sopressata or Salami, thinly sliced + diced into 1/4” cubes • 1/4 cup drained mild pepper rings, finely diced • 1/4 cup shaved Parmesan • 1/2 cup Italian dressing • 1 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • Generous pinch of Kosher salt Method: Cook the pasta according to package instructions. Transfer to a colander to strain and run cool water over it until the pasta is no longer steaming. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine the pasta, mozzarella, bell peppers, artichokes, cured meat, pepper rings, parmesan, Italian dressing, pepper and salt. Stir to combine and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight to marinate. Serve and enjoy as is, or over a bed of Romaine lettuce.
