TAMU Baseball & Softball by Julia Knight

exas A&M’s baseball and softball seasons are in full swing this season. No pun intended. Each team has had a successful first half of the season, but there are still some big games ahead to test the Aggies swinging skills.
record for most runs scored in a conference game. Their 16-0 win over the Gamecocks is the most runs scored in a SEC game, and the 16 runs ties the school record for most runs scored in a conference game, first set at Oklahoma State on April 12, 2006.
Aggie baseball is 19-10 overall with a 3-6 conference record. Conference play might have gotten off to a rocky start with a few tough losses to Kentucky and Vanderbilt, but the team is working hard to turn that around as they head into some important series against Alabama (April 13-15) and Tennessee (April 21-23). Both of these upcoming series are at home and the team could really use the full support of the 12th Man at Blue Bell Park.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Show has been a driving force behind the team’s solid defense. In the Aggie’s 8-0 win over Ole Miss on March 18, Show struck out nine in five innings and allowed just two hits and two walks. Show allowed only one hit in the team’s 5-1 victory over Texas State and gave up just three hits and two walks against South Carolina. The Aggie softball team is looking solid on both offense and defense and has some great momentum as they head into some tough series against Arkansas and Georgia.
Although conference play has started off slow, that hasn’t stopped some key players from putting on stellar performances and even winning some personal accolades along the way. Junior pitcher Brigham Hill has been a prominent figure thus far in the season. As the Aggies beat No. 8 LSU, 4-0, Hill did not allow a runner to reach second base in his eight innings on the mound. He struck out seven, and only allowed for three hits and two walks. This incredible performance earned him the honor of “SEC Pitcher of the Week” for the week of April 3 and we don’t think we’ve heard the last of him. Currently ranked at number 5 nationally, Aggie softball has had a tremendous first half of the season with a 31-3 overall record and 9-2 conference record. Softball came out of the gates strong, winning their first 4 conference series against Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Mizzou, and South Carolina. Not only did the Aggies run-rule South Carolina in their second game of the series, the Aggies broke the
Both baseball and softball will host home series the weekend of April 22, as the men take on Tennessee and the women face Georgia. Break out the peanuts, Cracker Jack, and Blue Bell, and come out and support your teams as they head into the second half of the season!

oloring isn’t just for the kiddos anymore – in fact, it’s becoming more and more popular among adults who are looking for an outlet to relieve stress. The only downside to the adult coloring fad is that, sometimes, it’s hard to tote around a coloring book and crayons with all of the things one would normally carry to class or work. “Lake Coloring Books: Art Therapy to Reduce Stress” provides resolution to such an issue because you can download it to your mobile device and take it anywhere! “Lake Coloring Books” was created for the purpose of stress relief and is geared more towards adults – rather than children. In addition, there is an array of drawings available that were created by aspiring artists that are predominantly found on Instagram! For someone who is always on the go but needs a small stress relieving distraction at time, this app is for sure you’ll want to download ASAP!
MOVIE REVIEW: BOSS BABY by Devika Singh
D
reamWorks Animation’s “Boss Baby” brings to theaters a new way of looking at infants and what they really do when adults aren’t watching. Director Tom McGrath tells the story of a family’s newborn – who happens to be a secret agent – and his suspicious seven-year-old brother who knows the infant is more than just cute. The older brother, Timothy – voiced by Miles Bakshi – becomes apprehensive of his new baby brother – voiced by Alec Baldwin – who can speak like an adult and carries a briefcase. Baldwin does an excellent job of maintaining a strong voice throughout the film and in-line with the baby’s facial expressions. Because the parents are ignorant of the mysterious acts, Timothy takes it upon himself to unveil the baby’s actions. This family movie provides entertainment for audiences of all ages and shows the world as a creative and inspired place, where even babies go to work. The plot combines suspense with an engaging story about an affectionate family that deals with more than just ordinary sibling feuds. McGrath engrosses audiences with colorful cinematography and animation of scenes that contrast one character as a baby and a boss in a suit and tie. According to the New York Times website, “The Boss Baby” outdid “Beauty and the Beast” in terms of box office profits, which contrasted many viewers’ expectations. Grab a friend or your family and enjoy a couple of hours of solid family entertainment and head over to watch a baby become a boss.
T
he Swedish artist who brought us the hit single, “Never Forget You”, has finally released her long anticipated sophomore studio album. Zara Larsson’s first international album, “So Good” is quickly making itself heard with its eclectic, pure pop sound. Zara Larsson explores the depth of her dynamic pop vibe with songs that range from a gentle, tropical pop to an electronic dance pop. Songs like “So Good” and “Lush Life” express an undeniably twenty-first century sound while songs like “One Mississippi” and “I Can’t Fall in Love With You” remind fans of the familiar vulnerability that accompanies love and heartache. The album features additional collaborations with artists such as MNEK in “Never Forget You”, Wizkid on “Sundown”, Ty Dolla $ign on “So Good”, and Clean Bandit in “Symphony.” Other artists such as Charles Puth Jr and Julia Michaels helped Larson in writing the songs. With a fierce and undeniable new age pop sound, this album is sure to be one of the hottest soundtracks of the year.

It is color coded to a chart of emotions. Then, we take all these collective answers and put them through an algorithm and come up with an experience map of Bryan and College Station. MW: That is quite unique. What maps and events have already been completed? JC: We did a project on campus at A&M in November of 2015 to reach out and see how people would respond there. We did it on the quad outside Langford and the administrative building, and it was really fun because it was like 200300 feet, it was a really big map, and we had people put survey flags on a spot on that map after filling out a questionnaire. We did an initial map with the results of that survey. We did it with a black background with white lines for the streets and then with colored spots that lit up the map like a light bright. That was the initial test, and we began the survey at Brazos Valley Worldfest last fall. Now we are gathering information through the survey and will be doing that through April. MW: I am glad to hear you had a good turnout on campus and at Brazos Valley Worldfest. What inspires you as an artist in all of your endeavors?
Exclusive Interview w/ XYZ Atlas artist Jennifer Chenoweth
X
YZ Atlas, an interactive, community-based art project, is currently working in College Station to create a map of the city based on the people who live here. We talked to the artist and creator of the project, Jennifer Chenoweth, to get all the details on her artistic ability as well as what the project is and why it was created. MW: In your opinion, what is the purpose of the XYZ Atlas project? JC: The purpose of the project is to ask people where they have had experiences that make them call Bryan and College Station home and to help us understand our emotional attachment to a place.
JC: We actually are each others teachers and students and that is really what community is about, that shared connection and growth we get from knowing one another with all our differences and all our similarities. So, it is usually something that I have learned from talking to another person that sparks my interest. The initial creative inspiration for this project was how is it that we are emotionally whole, are we already whole, do we become whole, how do we find happiness, is it happiness or is it all of it? I found through conversations with friends for years and years that it is the acceptance of all of it that makes you a whole person. What is that ‘all of it?’ It is all of those experiences you have in your life that sometime occur in the context or places and people. I think emotional wholeness has been something I’ve been thinking about and talking about my whole life. Really it was the idea of ‘why call a place home?’ that inspired this project. We are all having experiences and we all call it home. Are there common places we go to for these experiences? Do we have this shared notion of what home is? These were my questions are this was a way to ask people those questions about where they were having experiences and see if there were common locations that we all shared as positive or negative or places of despair or places of desperation to see if we could map that and have visualizations that demonstrate what that means.
MW: Can you describe how this community-based project is done?
MW: What goals would you say you are working toward as you map Bryan and College Station?
JC: The main thing we do is we have a survey. We have a lot of other little activities to get people’s’ attention about the project and to explain the project and get them to trust us enough to take the anonymous survey. We are asking some deep questions and even though we aren’t asking for people’s names or contact information, we still need them to trust us with their stories. What really want is for people to take the survey and when they answer a question about where they had their faith in humanity restored, with a place, that place has an XY or latitude and longitude coordinate. So, it is XYZ because we give it an up or down point if it was positive or negative.
JC: Finding out who to reach people closer to their neighborhoods is a goal. It’s an art project, not the U.S. census, it is a little aggressive to go door to door. Not everybody is online, so an online survey is easy for a certain demographic but not everybody. So my goal is to reach people that are not usually the first to participate in things and gain their trust to share their stories. We want to reach as diverse of a population as possible, so one of the things we do is use very basic demographic information, which is gender, age, home zip code and ethnicity so we can see what we are missing and set out to reach other people. We take the data in the spreadsheet
MAROON WEEKLY • Apr. 12, 2017 • MAROONWEEKLY.COM

and see that we are missing people from a certain area so that we can set up in a park in that neighborhood or if we see not many seniors are filling out the survey we can plan to go to some senior programming to make sure we are reaching out to as many people as possible. MW: That is very cool. It seems like XYZ Atlas strives to reach people from every part of the city in order to accurately display the culture of the city. Now we want to know a little more about you. Could you describe yourself as an artists such as your history, style, and passions? JC: I say that I am a visual artist to differentiate what I do from musicians or dancers or other types of artists. I have a pretty active studio practice, which means I make things with my hands, but what I’m making is not a set media. I work in whatever material fits with the idea, so in this case I had to figure out enough about technology to be able to supervise someone, an Aggie, to code the digital program used for XYZ. I did have a lot of input on how it would look, but sometimes an idea or project requires collaboration with a professional in another field, and then sometimes it is doing an interactive drawing with a person. I could have a person pose themselves against a piece of paper and then draw around them so that it is like a portrait of where they have been in space. I am really great with color, proportion, and geometry, and then I apply a lot of those skills whether it is drawing something with my hands or collaborating with someone that is working with design software. I picked art because it was the hardest thing to do because there is no roadmap. There is a lot of different ways to be an artist and I like it because it is freedom which is also the thing that makes it the hardest things. The point of art is to inspire people, and it is more integrated in many people’s lives than they even know. Chenoweth is working hard to learn everything there is to know about our community. If you would like to contribute to XYZ Atlas by sharing your stories about Bryan and College Station, you can submit your survey at survey.xyzatlas.org, volunteer at an event, or attend the final exhibit May 5.

iving with a roommate can be a source of worry and anxiety for college students. When people from different backgrounds and upbringings come together and spend a substantial amount of time together, each is accustomed to their own way of living, and friction can arise as a result. Sharing a small, new space with a random human can be intimidating. On the flipside, rooming with one of your closest friends could potentially cause tension to brew. Whatever the situation may be, being a good roommate is key to a successful semester in any home.
by Celeste Tamez
Set Boundaries Setting boundaries is the first step in being a good roommate. Establishing the rules will lay the foundation for a smooth sailing living experience. Sit down with your roommate(s) and talk about your expectations for the semester. Exchange school and work schedules so you know their general whereabouts in case of emergencies. Additionally, figure out household logistics: divide up the refrigerator shelves, cabinet space, and any other community area in the apartment. Drawing these literal lines will aid in having some sort of structure. This is the time express any specific questions or suggestions you have. Respect Each Other Maintaining mutual respect will make home life so easy. In an ideal world, you and your roommate(s) will become best friends, but that is not always the case. A good roommate respects their living partners’ room, dishes, food, supplies, car, and any other possession of theirs. This especially important if you expect the same kind of treatment. Respect is also applied when using community appliances like the refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, microwave, and washer and dryer. Remember everyone, including you, is entitled to using each of these at whatever time they choose. Being a good roommate means cleaning up after yourself when you use any of these appliances. Leaving a dirty kitchen or living room helps no one and will only create conflict. Communicate Communication is vital in living with another person. Although setting boundaries starts everyone on the same page, problems can and will arise. When they do, it is crucial that you are well equipped with the appropriate way to address the issue. No matter how sticky the situation, keep in mind how you handle it will affect your home life well after it is resolved. To avoid making living together awkward, be honest with your roommate(s), but maintain respect. Let them know how a certain action of theirs makes you feel and work together to make the living environment better for each of you.

If you are looking for a new apartment to live in next year, finding a roommate to live with is half the battle. If you don’t already have a someone in mind, utilizing apartment roommate profiles can aid the worrisome process. Most apartment complexes have whipped up a system of roommate matching. This page-long profile will include basic questions like name, hometown, major, and classification that you can expect to see on a majority of them. They will continue to delve into specific questions such as what times you typically wake up and go to sleep, how often you watch television, exercise, or hang out with friends. At this part of the profile form, it is crucial you are as honest as possible. Don’t feel embarrassed if you wake up late every day or enjoy spending time with your friends. This will allow the apartment complex to get an idea of your ideal home life and match you with someone who either enjoys the same schedule or is content in living with someone who does. You can include any organizations you participate in and hobbies and interests you enjoy on your own time. Important questions in a roommate profile will ask you pertains to smoking and living with pets. Be honest if you do smoke or cannot stand to live with someone who does. Additionally, keep in mind the word “pets” can mean any type of animal from dogs and cats to mice and snakes. Though these apartment complexes have good intentions in making their tenants happy, they are not a matchmaking company. Your roommates may or may not become your best friends or even match half of the recommendations you made. he summer months are going to be here in no time, which means sooner than later for Texas, and it will be almost unavoidable to be seen in a bathing suit. The kids will be chomping at the bit for a little pool time, and I’ll undoubtedly be caught standing next to someone who might be a little leaner than me. I guess it’s time to start pretending like I enjoy eating healthy and disdain the thought of bread. Hilarious. While I know cutting back on the carbs isn’t going to bless me with abs of steel, I guess it’s somewhat on the right track. The problem is, well, I don’t really like the idea of diet food. I mean, I don’t mind eating good-for-you cuisine one little bit, I just really want it to be taste-good-to-me cuisine as well. Now, we all know that nothing truly compares to pasta. Wonderful, delicious, carby pasta. However, we can handle a little noodle sacrifice every now and again, can’t we? Surely, we will be all the better for it. The real treat is when the substitution doesn’t feel like a punishment. I absolutely refuse to allow food to punish my beloved tastebuds. Spaghetti Squash with Fresh Basil and Parmesan Cheese is a far cry from foodie torture. I think you’ll find it savory and complex, but most importantly, you’ll find it satisfying. Serve it with meatballs and marinara, eat it on its own, or use it as a side dish and enjoy. For more healthy recipes, go to www.TheAnthonyKitchen.com and click the “Healthy” category. INGREDIENTS: • 1 (4-6 pound) spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise and seeded • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • Juice of a lemon • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 3 tablespoons finely chopped basil METHOD: Preheat the oven to 375° and have ready a rimmed baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
