MOVIE REVIEW:

MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

SNAPSEED

his film, directed by Tim Burton, tells the story of Jake and his adventure to find out more about his grandfather and himself. Burton weaves a creepy narrative of friendship, love, and discovery with stunning special effects and scenes. If you’re a fan of movies like “Harry Potter,” “Alice and Wonderland,” “Percy Jackson,” and other movies involving the impossible, you’ll love Burton’s latest film. “Enders Game’s” Asa Butterfield does a fantastic job playing the awkward yet quirky Jake, who is distraught and loss after the loss of his grandfather. He eventually falls for the beautiful Emma, played by Ella Purnell, who

Snapseed includes tools to alter the quality of the photo and filters to alter the color. Although the filters could be considered one of the app’s weaknesses, the tools make up for this downside. It is equipped with the basic tools such as crop, rotate, and text. But what makes this photoediting app stand out from the countless other apps like it is the “tune image” tool, which is used to adjust the brightness, and the “details” tool which is used to edit the structure, or clarity. The “brush” tool is also extremely helpful when wanting to whiten or add more saturation to a specific part of the photo. Overall, Snapseed is a great app for editing and producing high quality photos.

Based on the novel by Ransom Riggs, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Particular Children” builds a fantastic world that makes any viewer feel like they could belong. The movie follows the wonderful setup of misfit children finding a place among each other–a dream we’ve all had at one time or another. The film features grotesque monsters and situations even for Tim Burton, but that only added to its charm. We could have used a little less eyeball-eating on screen, though. The only other criticism we have is we wish we could have found out a little more about the other peculiar children, but the movie did have a lot of information to pack into two hours. The film is does a nice job building up the story line and then allowing the action to carry the story for the majority of the duration. Overall, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Particular Children” is definitely worth the trip to the theater, if not only to watch the skeleton vs. tentacle monster fight. by Linley Stringer

ou might remember him as local band Votary’s frontman, but Jack Thweatt has broken out into a solo career in the singer-songwriter department with his first full-length album. “You Take Me Back” is a soulful album with a bluesy feel, each song echoing with his distinct clear voice.

Jack Thweatt Album:

You Take Me Back Release Date: September 09, 2016

Thweatt’s sound is similar to other popular singersongwriters like Matt Wertz and Ben Rector, emulating their light sounds and meaningful lyrics, but also very much taking on a voice of his own. This would be the ideal album to snuggle up and read a book to or cruise to with the windows down. The easy feel of the album makes it worth listening to and is guaranteed to put you in a good mood. With only seven songs, it’s a quick but enjoyable listen that will make you long for easier days or match any optimistic mood.

n October 14, College Station favorite Josh Abbott Band will be performing at Hurricane Harry’s with special guest, Parker McCollum.

Josh Abbott Band is a regular to the College Station music scene and an unquestionable fan favorite. While they spend most of their time touring in Texas, they have also acquired a larger fan base that extends to Nashville, Chicago, Washington D.C., Denver, and Los Angeles. The relatability of their songs has grown their audience, with topics ranging from relationships, to heartbreak, to finding yourself.

pg 6 • MAROON WEEKLY • April 30, 2014 • maroonweekly.com pg 6 • MAROON WEEKLY • Oct. 12, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

Their newest album, “Front Row Seat,” released in 2015, is an extremely personal look at Abbott’s own life, with an in depth look at his personal romantic relationship, from beginning to end, with his now ex-wife. Breaking the album up into five acts, with three songs in each act, the album tells the all too relatable story of meeting, falling in love, getting married, getting divorced, and dealing with the outcome. Although this is not how the album was intended to be, Abbott says that the album has become a “sense of closure” for him. Not straying from his roots, the album still gives the Texas country music feel that people love, while treating his fans like friends and letting them in to a personal space.

Opening for Josh Abbott Band is Parker McCollum, a 24-year-old new to the Texas music industry. Although he may be young, the singer-songwriter has already been compared to artists such as John Mayer and Ryan Bingham. His first full-length album, “The Limestone Kid,” was released in February 2015 with a good reception. Whether it’s happy or sad, each song tells a story with a mixture of blues, country, and rock roots. His sound is easy, enjoyable, and sure to delight the Aggieland audience. Grab a friend and drink for an evening of excellent live music at one of College Station’s favorite places with some of its favorite artists. The show will be on October 14. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through the Hurricane Harry’s website, Cavenders Boot City in College Station, Aggieland Outfitters on University, and Southern Jewlz Boutique on Harvey Road. Doors open at 9pm.

I

t’s finally October and Halloween is right around the corner, which means pumpkin carving is upon us. “Better Homes and Gardens” broke down exactly what to do for a successful pumpkin carve.

1. PICK YOUR PUMPKIN WITH A PURPOSE Know your design before you go to the store to pick your pumpkin. This way you will know what size and shape your pumpkin needs to be. Also, make sure to avoid pumpkins with any soft spots or surface rotting. These will hinder carving. No one wants a Jack-O-Lantern with a caved in face. 2. DON’T CUT YOUR PUMPKIN RIGHT AWAY. Wait to carve your pumpkin until two or three days before Halloween. Pumpkins soften quickly and the more that is cut into the surface, the faster this process is. Waiting will allow the pumpkin to still look nice on the actual holiday. 3. CUTTING AND SCRAPING

NOW LEASING FALL 2017

f

Before starting the carving process, rinse off the pumpkin. After rinsing, cut a round lid on the top of the pumpkin. When cutting this lid, “Better Homes and Gardens” recommends leaving a small triangular notch to help with putting the lid back on after carving is done. Use a large spoon in the sink to remove the pumpkin seeds and pulp to make clean up easier. Avoid digging into the walls too much and never send pumpkin pulp down the garbage disposal.

979.314.1900 | live-thelofts.com

4. TIME TO DESIGN Draw the design on the pumpkin with a washable marker before carving. This will make carving easier and the washable marker comes off easily with a damp cloth once carving is done. Use a filet knife to carve and push the pieces out from the inside to avoid further damage to the pumpkin. Follow these four simple steps and this pumpkin carve is sure to be a successful one! Happy Halloween!

ggie football is tearing it up over at Kyle Field, but they aren’t the only ones. Take a walk over to Reed Arena or Ellis Field to watch Aggie volleyball and soccer in the midst of another successful season.

Aggie volleyball is coming off an SEC championship season last year, finishing last season 24-7, 16-2 in conference play. The ladies in maroon and white look to defend that title this season, currently sitting at 9-6, 3-1 in conference. Five starters return to the court for Texas A&M, including some big names such as juniors Ashlie Reasor and Stephanie Alpie and senior Jazzmin Babers. Alpie is the reigning SEC Player of the Year and Babers was a member of the

All-SEC team last season. Babers was also named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on October 3 after racking up a career best 10 blocks against conference rival LSU. It was the sixth time Babers has received this honor in her career. She also notched her 1,000 career kill against Arkansas earlier in October. Reasor was a member of the 2014 All-SEC freshmen team and continues to light up the court as a third-year starter. The team also welcomes eight freshmen for the 2016 campaign through the season. If you haven’t attended an Aggie volleyball game, be sure to get to Reed this season to check them out. On October 16, the team will #DigPink giving free pink volleyball shirts to the first 300 fans to arrive at the game against Florida.

Over on Ellis Field, Aggie soccer is off to yet another strong start. The team returns ten starters from last year’s 17-7-2 season and welcomes eight freshmen to the team. The ladies are currently 7-5 overall, 2-3 in conference play. This team continues to get better as they have advanced into the NCAA tournament since 1996, breaking the Sweet Sixteen every year since joining the SEC in 2012. Earlier in the season, senior goalkeeper Danielle Rice was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for her outstanding performance against LSU as she notched her fourth career shutout in goal. In other Aggie soccer news, former players Shea Groom and Merritt Mathias earned roster spots on the United States Women’s National Team. The Aggie soccer team is notorious for a good time and lots of promotional giveaways, so make sure to get to Ellis Field and keep an eye on the Aggie Soccer Twitter account for information on those giveaways. The team will return to Ellis Field on October 20 against Kentucky.

THE ILLUSIONISTS @ RUDDER

traight from the Broadway stage, famous magician act The Illusionists are coming to Rudder Theatre on October 18 and 19 to dazzle the Brazos Valley.

The Illusionists, a Broadway magic show, is comprised of eight illusionists that are blowing minds and shattering box office records all over the country and they are dropping by College Station. Each illusionist has his or her own “thing” that they are a master in, so this won’t be your typical birthday party slight-of-hand deal. The Anti-Conjuror, Dan Sperry, specializes in shock illusions. His tricks have landed him on many hit television shows and he is currently one of the top ten most Googled people in the world. He combines magic with the macabre to consistently amaze audiences.

“one of the greatest thought readers of all time” by famous mind reader Uri Geller. His talents are mind-blowing as he reads people like a book, guessing what they had lunch for the day, the PIN code to their phone, and just about anything else. The Futurist, Adam Trent, specializes in technology illusions. He enjoys taking classic magic techniques and mixing them up with technology, comedy, and even some dancing. He shatters stereotypes every night when he takes the stage. The Trickster, Jeff Hobson, specializes in comedy magic. He is known for his glamour and showmanship and always leaves the audience laughing all night long. So at least you’ll be enjoying not knowing how he does what he does.

The Inventor, Kevin James, specializes in magic innovation. James is extremely original in his performances and as a result, his ideas have made their way into the shows of other famous magicians.

The Escapologist, Andrew Basso, specializes in death defying acts that include escapes everywhere from underwater to 150 feet in the air. He escapes within seconds and leaves the audience in utter disbelief.

The Weapon Master, Ben Blaque, is exactly what one would expect him to be: a master of weapons. He consistently performs acts that are as dangerous as they are mind-blowing. His signature performance includes the use of a crossbow to shoot objects supported by his assistant.

Finally, the Manipulator, Yu Ho-Jin, has been dubbed the manipulator of mystery and wonder. He is the epitome of the phrase “now you see it, now you don’t.” He was the 2014 Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts and continues to amaze every time he takes the stage.

The Deductionist, Colin Cloud, is seemingly all knowing. He has been dubbed

HOP CITY: A LOCAL BREW PROFILE

any are surprised by College Station’s great beer scene, whether from College Station breweries or from a couple of miles out on the shelves of HEB. While we may not have as many breweries as bigger Texas cities, the one’s we do have are all about quality. We tasted a few from New Republic, Blackwater Draw, and Karbach to create a beginners profile to the local brews in Aggieland. NEW REPUBLIC BREWERY Whipsaw Third Coast Double IPA 8% ABV This beer is thick and citrusy with a good amount of hops. If you’re a fan of Karbach’s Weekend Warrior, you’ll love Whipsaw.

Kadigan Complicated Blonde 5.8% ABV The Kadign has a delicious champagne color with a light and crisp profile. This blonde has a nice yeast taste that is subtle enough to still feel like a lighter beer.

Skylight Dunkelweizen 5.6% ABV Skylight is a beautiful dark colored beer with a light and crisp taste. This bubbly beer goes down easy and features a variety of flavors like vanilla, banana, and wheat.

Dammit Jim American Amber 5.2% ABV Dammit Jim is perfect for those just getting into craft beer. It’s heavy enough that you can really appreciate the craft, yet it’s still easy enough to drink for those new to beer with hops. Dammit Jim has a great amber taste with a sharp finish.

Windlass Sweet Potato Porter 6.6 ABV This is another really dark colored beer that takes your tongue off guard. It has a unique, spicy taste from the sweet potato that leaves a coffee-like finish.

pg 16 • MAROON WEEKLY • Oct. 12, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

Plumcot Table Beer Belgian Pale Ale 4% ABV Plumcot Table Beer has a great amber color and crisp taste. This beer goes down really easy, mixing its great yeast taste with a little bit of tartness. Marlinspike Moreish Porter 5.8 ABV Marlinspike is a perfect gateway into more robust beers, with a toasty malt taste and bitter finish. The beer has a smooth and dark color and a delicious nose. BLACKWATER DRAW Mulligan Kölsch 5.25 ABV This is one of our favorite beers because it is perfect for people new to craft beers as well as those who have been around them. It has a great yeasty taste with a smooth taste that goes down easy. Border Town Mexican Style Lager 4.8 ABV This beer has the same great yeasty taste as the Mulligan but with a little more of a bite. It has a great mix of hops and malt to make it extra crisp.

Contract Killer Coffee Porter 6.4 ABV This is another great coffee brew in College Station. Blackwater was spot on with this one—it tastes like it came straight out of a Keurig. This beer has a beautiful coffee brown color with a tasty caramel and wheat flavor. The coffee is subtle enough in the after taste that it still feels like beer. Timber Snake American IPA 6.8 ABV This is a great beer for anyone who loves hops and malts. Timber Snake has the same great bitter crispness as Karbach’s Weekend Warrior and New Republic’s Whipsaw. Brewjeria American Brown Ale 6.9 ABV The Brewjeria is like the Extra Pale Ale, but much more amplified. This beer features an intense blend of malt and spice. IPL India Pale Lager 5.7 ABV This lager features subtle malts under the citrusy hops, making it both refreshing and robust. The light gold beer has an amazing aroma and tasty cashmere hops.

Gringo IPA American IPA 5.25 ABV Tart and citrusy, this IPA has a little bit deeper color than BWD’s IPL. Wheat malts make up the bold taste of this IPA. KARBACH (HOUSTON) Zee German Pills German Pilsner 4.9 ABV This beer is crisp and light, leaving you happy with not too much bloat. It features a nice amber color with a wheat base and a little bit of a bite. Love Street Kölsch 4.9 ABV This crisp beer is perfect for a summer day by the pool. It is light enough to not slow you down but delicious enough to still carry the craft feel. This is a great choice for novice drinkers–with a clean malt base mixed with the perfect, subtle amount of hops. Hopadillo American IPA 6.6% ABV Hopadillo takes the bitterness from Weekend Warrior and turns it up two notches. This crisp beer goes down surprisingly easy for such a hop forward brew.

CANCER by Abby Newton

@ GRAND STAFFORD

T

he 5th annual Beat The Hell Out Of Breast Cancer Festival presented by F13 Music, Come and Take It Productions, and Rock 979 will be held at the Grand Stafford Theater in Downtown Bryan on October 14. For five years, Seneca Homeyer has hosted the festival to raise money for a breast cancer victim in need. The donations from this event have increased with every passing year, and this year doesn’t appear to be any different. The festival supports a cause that Homeyer has always been passionate about after being raised by a woman who battled and ultimately survived breast cancer. Two years after losing a loved one to breast cancer, Homeyer decided to do his part in helping those in need which led to the birth of the Beat the Heal Out of Breast Cancer festival. This year, there will be eight metal/rock bands playing the festival including Hindsight, Second Runner Up, Isonomist, Sol, Three33, Distance Here, Frame the Artist, and Voyage to Conquer. Many of these bands have played in Downtown Bryan before and are excited to come together to be a part of this great cause at one of Bryan’s most beloved music venues. The Grand Stafford is the perfect venue for this event with its smaller setting that brings the crowd together under the flag of music. But particularly for this event, the desire to unite together under one roof for a cause and great music is real. If you enjoy venues that embody the close-knit vibe of Downtown Bryan and a have laid-back yet fun atmosphere that all music lovers will enjoy, then you won’t want to miss this event. The doors of the Grand Stafford will open at 6:30pm on October 14 with performances beginning at 7pm. The event will welcome all ages with tickets costing $10 at the door. Donations are being accepted at a link that is available on the events’ Facebook page. Head on out to Downtown Bryan October 14, make a donation, enjoy great live performances, and help Beat the Hell Out of Breast Cancer!

PARKER HEIGHTS @ LAKESIDE ICEHOUSE

his Friday, Lake Bryan welcomes Texas country band Parker Heights as a part of their latest tour. The College Station group formerly known as The FM 2865 Band will be performing on October 14 at Lakeside Icehouse to promote their latest album, “Living The Dream,” that was released in February of this year. Parker Heights, the local band that consists of four siblings and a close friend, began its journey in 2008 with their debut album, “Dream Big.” They formed the group in 2001 as a six-member family with the name Cool Water Country and in 2006, changed it to The FM 2865 Band. Since then, the band has added new styles and the members have experimented with various instruments; however, they have stayed grounded in the genre of Texas country with an occasional contemporary twist. Every member has shaped the band’s music and image with his or her own personal style and sense of rhythm, making their sound always unique and

colorful. The songs bring out each member’s unique personality, from bass and lyrics to their personality on stage. The now five-member band has performed at various sites within Texas and has shared the stage with and opened for artists like Kevin Fowler, Cody Johnson, and Jason Allen. It has evolved into a well-known Texas country group that is continuing to grow because of loyal, spirited fans. The Friday concert is the last one they have planned for this tour and performing in Bryan is like performing in their own backyard, which is bound to make it a special show. Tickets are available for purchase at the Lake Bryan website and at the door for $7. The concert begins at 8pm and doors open at 6:30pm. The Lake Bryan website recommends making table and seat reservations online and in advance, as you will not be able to reserve seats the night of the show. Come out to a fall evening on the lake and support local artists.
