very music lover knows that what’s even better than a new band is an old band making a comeback. Grammy Award winning band and the famous “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” artist Green Day released a new album on October 7, titled “Revolution Radio.” This is the punk rock band’s first album since 2009 to be recorded as a trio and has been in the works since 2014. Apart from some critical reviews, the album is topping charts worldwide in the pop and alternative genre. Some critics say the music does not have a particular direction, much like Green Day’s other albums, but the lead single, “Bang Bang” is becoming quite popular with the younger generation, along with young adults waiting for the group’s return. The music still portrays the rebel teenage attitude, as it did in the popular 2004 album, “American Idiot” and exemplifies the punk rock genre that has been disappearing slowly amidst contemporary artists. To fulfill your nostalgic cravings, pick up Green Day’s latest album, “Revolution Radio.”

ON A BUDGET Source: Living off Love and Coffee, Blog

U

niversally, college students are known for being two things: stressed out and broke. With midterms coming up and Halloween right around the corner, a party is certainly in order to help de-stress. Here are some tips on how to throw a Halloween party on a college student budget. • There is no need to get super fancy. Stick with the basic colors like orange, black, purple, and lime green. Everything that you could need from plates to table clothes can likely be found at your local Dollar Store or Walmart. • Get creative and make things yourself. Pinterest is full of fun do-ityourself ideas for some spooky decorations. For example, an empty water or milk jug can be used for just about anything. Draw faces on them for a jack-o-lantern effect or fill them with water and a glow stick for some extra light. • Amazon is currently selling silicon molds for $6 in all sorts of fun Halloween themed shapes that would be perfect for cookies, ice cubes, Jell-o, and much more. They are a cheap and easy way to get into the Halloween spirit. • Potluck! Have each guest bring a Halloween themed treat for the party. There can even be a prize for the most creative snack brought to the party. • Keep it simple, but fun. Games like ghost bowling are easy. Just pile up some toilet paper rolls and draw a ghost face on each one. Then use a pumpkin to bowl! Costume contests are always a hit and Freeform (aka old ABC Family) will soon be starting 13 Days of Halloween so are movies to be watched. pg 6there • MAROON WEEKLYgalore • April 30, 2014 • maroonweekly.com pg 6 • MAROON WEEKLY • Oct. 19, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

n W h e n a y r you’re in the mood for pizza, B e you can’t go wrong in Downtown Bryan n l with the two local gems Mr. G’s and Rx Pizza. But with w t o t t Ba their proximity and equal tastiness, sometimes it’s hard to n good news is you can’t go wrong. We put together some Dow izza choose. Theinformation to make the decision a little easier. P Mr. G’s Pizzeria is located on West 26th street in Bryan. Since their opening, they have also opened up a second Mr. G’s in College Station on University. Their pizza comes in many different forms, whether you want a calzone, a regular pie, or gluten free. With nine specialty pizzas to choose from, veggie lovers to meat fanatics will find something they love. We love the thick, chewy crust at Mr. G’s, making the crust one of the best parts. The pizzas come in either 14 or 16-inch sizes, which are both big enough to share or take home for leftovers (cold Mr. G’s is the best!). If you go by during lunch hours and aren’t feeling quite as hungry, you can also by pizza by the slice. Be sure to save room for Mr. G’s amazing cheesy garlic bread though. Rx Pizza and bar is right across from Mr. G’s, and is no less delicious. Rx Pizza is made in a brick oven, giving it it’s great charred and toasty taste. We love the atmosphere in the restaurant and can’t get enough of their amazing sides, especially the sunrise tots (tater tots topped with bacon, goat cheese, fried egg, and avocado ranch). With eight delicious specialty pizzas and a “build-your-own” option, Rx is great even for the pickiest of eaters. Rx serves has a one-size-fits-all philosophy, serving only 14 inch pies (8 inch pies are offered during lunch hours). This pizzeria is also known for their specialty cocktails because nothing goes better with pizza than booze (we recommend the classic Moscow mule–$7). Both Mr. G’s and Rx are very similar price wise, so as far as pizza and money go, both are a great option. If you are gluten free, Mr. G’s is for you. But if you’re looking for a cocktail to wash down your dough, then Rx is the go-to. If you are simply looking for some great pizza, then you can’t go wrong in Downtown Bryan!

WAYBACK BURGERS:

AGGIELAND’S NEWEST BURGER STOP

Y

ou find yourself driving down Texas Avenue between George Bush and Harvey…do you smell that? It smells like a delicious burger and fries. It’s Wayback Burgers; the new burger joint in town and it is worth the turnaround. We went in with a mission to try all of the most ordered items on the menu. This menu is big and included patty melts, a burger called the “Rodeo” which has an onion ring on it, and a “Philly” with grilled onions. We tried the “Cheesy” that went all out with 4 pieces of cheese and grilled buttered bread. Let me tell you, the sides are worth a long look because there you will find that they have mac and cheese bites. Yes! They’re worth it.

The milkshake was also suggested as a “must” and we ended up with a chocolate banana, but the menu goes far with items like Oreo Mint and Café Mocha. The service was excellent and we definitely recommend trying this place to celebrate the next Aggie win.

TUSCALOOSA SHOWDOWN

or the first time since joining the SEC, Texas A&M will head into Alabama undefeated. This will be the fifth matchup between the two teams as conference foes, kicking off at 2:30pm on CBS as the Game of the Week. In 2012, Texas A&M joined the SEC. Many expected an absolute flop, but a redshirt freshman quarterback had other ideas. Johnny “Football” Manziel and the Aggie offense were electric throughout the inaugural season and that trend continued during the teams stop in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide, winners of 13 straight games and defending national champions, underestimated the Aggies immensely and were not prepared for the game that lay ahead on November 10, 2012. The Aggies went on to

pg 10 • MAROON WEEKLY • Oct. 19, 2016 • maroonweekly.com

win 29-24 behind a red-hot offense that scored touchdowns on each of their first three scoring drives and a game-sealing interception at the goal line by Deshazor Everett to stop a crimson comeback. The Aggies had pulled off the biggest upset of the season handing the Crimson Tide their only loss of the year, capturing “lightning in a bottle in Tuscaloosa” according to announcer Dave South. Since that fateful November day, the Aggies haven’t been able to replicate that lightning moment. The team was close in 2013, losing a high scoring affair 49-42 at Kyle Field. Alabama gave up a school record 628 to Johnny Manziel and the Aggies, but came out the winners in the end. The difference in that game was a crucial pick six for the Tide. That one stung just a bit, but nothing

like what would happen the following year in Tuscaloosa. In 2014 came the game that no Aggie likes to talk about and every Alabama fan loves to remind them of: the 59-0 crumbling of the Aggies. This was Alabama’s biggest shutout victory since a 62-0 in 1991 against Tulane and A&M’s worse shutout loss since Oklahoma beat them 77-0 in 2003. Texas A&M had a total of 31 rush yards for the game and the Aggie defense had shown that it was less than stellar. In October of 2015, the Crimson Tide returned to Kyle Field to face the Texas A&M Aggies. While not as bad as the previous year, this game stung just as much for every Aggie fan in attendance as the maroon and white came out the losers, 41-23 behind three pick-sixes thrown by quarterback Kyle Allen. On October 22, the Aggies (6-0) will once again head to Tuscaloosa hoping to break a four-year losing streak against the formidable Crimson Tide.

TONE 360 FITNESS STUDIO by Alicia Torres

T

he positive vibes were at an all=time high when we walked in this new fitness facility in College Station. Tone 360 Fitness Studio is revolutionizing how Aggies are getting their steps in! We found ourselves in Nayokia’s 1PM Tone N’ Dance class and we could not be more happy with the results. The energy levels were high and it was no secret that she has a large fan base. Not only did she dance throughout the entire class, but she was constantly motivating us to push ourselves further. The playlist involved upbeat hits with motivational lyrics and a lot of twerking. By the end of the class everyone was cheering “OoohaOooha” which is heard at many of Nayokia’s classes. Tone 360 offers a variety of classes for all levels of fitness! Next we tried out Kaleigh’s 5:30AM TRX class and when we say it was well worth the early alarm, we are serious. TRX Suspension Training is a long time trend that uses your bodyweight to preform a plethora of exercises. Kaleigh explained each workout very thoroughly and showed us how a few simple adjustments can add or decrease resistance. We have a list of classes to try out next including: Cardio Circuit and Barre-lates. Check out the full schedule on their Facebook page. The venue offers an outside seating area for pre or post class breaks and is conveniently close to the Lululemon show room. If you want to be a part of an encouraging and welcoming fitness community, Tone 360 Fitness Studio is for you. maroonweekly.com • Oct. 19, 2016 • MAROON WEEKLY • pg 15

@ WOLF PEN CREEK

D

uring the fall season, many people spend weekend their afternoons watching their favorite football teams hash it out on the gridiron. Football has become more than just a sport for people across the country. American families and friends bond over football games and watch parties, and it has become the highlight of most of our years. College Station Parks & Recreation is bringing families and friends together by showing two different games this season at Wolf Pen Creek, where people can go watch these games outdoors for free. The games will be projected onto a 32-foot inflatable screen, and those who attend will be able to bring in coolers, 48-quarts or smaller, so they can enjoy food and drinks of their choice. The first game Wolf Pen Creek is scheduled to show is the Houston Texans against the Denver Broncos on October 24. They are also scheduled to show the Dallas Cowboys when they play the Philadelphia Eagles on October 30. How could a football watch party get any better than that? This fun evening out is perfect for all ages and is a great outing whether your friends are cheering with you or against you. These events are great for College Station residents to enjoy an evening out without any hassle or cost, and the lack of preparation before the games makes it the perfect place for college students to watch football and relax before heading back to class for another week. College Station Parks & Recreation work tirelessly to bring new and exciting ways for residents to enjoy their city in safe and unique ways. This is why you should head on out to Wolf Pen Creek on October 24 and October 30 to enjoy these fun filled evenings and watch the most beloved NFL teams by Texas football fans in a free and laid-back atmosphere. Admission to the games will be free with the gates being opened at 6pm and both games scheduled for 7:30pm. The best part is, it is a family atmosphere, therefore, pets are permitted and you can bring your own refreshments.

DUNCAN FELLOWS @ GRAND STAFFORD THEATER

ndie Rock is a music scene that has a lively presence in Downtown Bryan that has local music-lovers buzzing. On October 20, indie rock band Duncan Fellows from Austin will be back in College Station performing at the Grand Stafford Theater. Duncan Fellows is a fairly new band with their first release being in 2013 and their most recent single being released this year. The band is made up of five southern men who all have a mutual love for making music. Colin Harman, Cullen Trevino, Jack Malonis, David Stimson, and Tim Hagen came together and were founded under an independent record label in November 2012. Since then, they have had top selling EP’s and sold-out shows. Duncan Fellows often compares their sound to Ben Howard and early Kings of Leon. Their music ranges from mellow and relaxing to driving and jolting. Their most recent single “Coffins” is a soothing yet upbeat track that mixes in beautiful lyrics with unique instrumentals.

Duncan Fellows is currently working on their first full-length record that is said to begin its release this year. Those who have seen this band perform rave about, not only their music, but also their enjoyable stage presence. They are fun and playful on stage, which captures their audience in a way that leaves them wanting more. Joining Duncan Fellows will be Thomas Csorba, a singer/ songwriter from Houston. Csorba is an artist similar to the sound of Duncan Fellow, but he incorporates a folk music sound into his songs. If you enjoy indie and folk music, this is the show for you! Tickets for the event can be purchased from the Grand Stafford online for $8. Take advantage of this early bird deal because tickets will go up to $12 at the door, and this is not a show you will want to miss. KEVIN FOWLER @ HARRY’S

A

ggieland’s favorite dance hall will be letting Kevin Fowler and Josh Ward take the stage on October 21. Kevin Fowler is a Texas Country artist who is not a stranger to College Station. Whether it is Hurricane Harry’s or Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater, Fowler has performed and made himself known to Texas A&M students. Fowler is known as one of the biggest names in Texas country music and his music is often compared to Texas Country artists he has performed with in the past such as Cody Johnson, Randy Rodgers Band, and Rodger Creager. Some of Fowler’s most well known songs include “Hard Man to Love”, “That Girl”, and “Long Line of Losers”. All of these songs are Fowler to the core, and his fans appreciate his way of putting himself into each song he writes. Fowler’s new single, “He Ain’t No Cowboy”, was released September 30 and is about the way country men love the woman in their life. He is telling the woman he loves that her new man will not love her the way he did because “he ain’t no cowboy”. The song is a real cowboy’s anthem, and there is no doubt he will be playing it at the show.

Josh Ward, an artist known for his traditional country sound and strong voice, will also be performing. General admission tickets are being sold online by Hurricane Harry’s for $12 but are also be available for purchase at Cavender’s Boot City on Highway 6 in College Station or the Aggieland Outfitters’ University Drive location.

very Texan knows that the rodeo is the true sport of the state. This week welcomes friends and family to come enjoy the Brazos Valley Fair and Rodeo, with local live music and much more. The 5th annual fair that takes place in Bryan each year consists of rodeo festivities, including mutton bustin’, a livestock show, and carnival. Like other events hosted by the City of Bryan, this weekend was initially created to fund academic grants and scholarships for agricultural research and local educational events. Additional profits fund growth and promotion of the city. The previous two years have brought in more than 500 heads of cattle, various competitions, and an average of 17,000 attendees. The expo offers student and livestock internships each year to promote agricultural awareness and volunteer opportunities. The involvement of friends and family brings the community together to popularize Brazos County. Events began last week with seven days of baked and canned goods contests, followed by performances and livestock exhibits. October 21 launches events like bareback riding, barrel racing, roping, and hay hauling. A mechanical

bull and petting zoo will also be open to attendees, along with the carnival, contests, and shopping venues. Many of the same events will be held on Saturday, so if you miss Friday, it’s not a big deal. There will be a tailgating area for the A&M vs. Alabama game. Concert lineup includes Jason Boland and the Stragglers on Friday and Steve Wariner on Saturday, both hosted by Bud Light Stage Entertainment. The expo provides numerous ways to involve attendees by volunteering and participating in competitions such as the Junior Livestock Show, Youth Western Art Show, and a photography contest. Art and photography from previous winners will be displayed at the galleries. Tickets are available on the Brazos Valley Fair website and from rodeo volunteers. Prices vary for the concerts, carnival, and general admission, and parking is free for general public on the fair grounds. Early bird specials and season tickets are also available online. So gather family and friends for a weekend of true Texan festivities and remember that proceeds benefit the Brazos County communities.
