GEOSTORM
by Justin Walker
I tMOVIE REVIEW is ironic when a film dubbed as a “disaster film” ends up being an utter disaster. While “Geostorm” does not quite reach that level of disappointment, it fails to live up to its potential, as the Dean Devlin directed film relies too heavily on the special effects and lacks depth in many facets. After a series of natural disasters, several nations come together to create a satellite system to control climate across the globe, led by architect Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler). After being sacked for not following orders, Lawson leaves the project, only to return three years later when the satellite begins to cause worse weather-related disasters than it was created to prevent. Now, he is tasked with not only fixing the satellite, but also discovering who or what is causing the malfunction. The film is flawed from the start due to the lackluster script, including corny dialogue and unrealistic situations, even after taking the eccentric plot into consideration. Most of the movie is spent watching characters watch TVs and computer monitors. And, while some characters deliver hilarious one-liners, most of the script centers on unnecessary personal drama that results in zero character development. “Geostorm” promises global destruction scenes in its trailers, yet those scenes in the film are bland at best. Every shot is up close, with almost no panorama views of wiped out cities. After watching “2012,” where we see Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. be completely wiped out, it is disappointing to have the chaos limited to a street market in Mumbai and an alleyway in Rio. We all know that the movie will have a relatively happy ending (name one disaster movie that doesn’t), so watch the trailer on YouTube and save yourself the ticket price.
ALBUM REVIEW Seven albums into his music career, Chris Young introduces his
latest compilation “Losing Sleep.” As an established country artist, Young takes his career to a new level by co-producing and co-writing every song in his new album.
by Jaclyn Ysaquirre
Some of his past works include country hits “Tomorrow” and “I’m Comin’ Over.” With love being the most popular topic in his songs, Young has dug deep into his emotions with “Losing Sleep.” The album’s title track and lead single starts with a simple guitar note that leads into Young’s tender and tangy vocals.
ARTIST: Chris Young ALBUM: Losing Sleep RELEASED: Oct. 20, 2017
Overall, the album incorporates a mellow and relaxed tempo without losing Young’s voice in the lyrics. With singles like “Woke Up Like This” and “Hangin’ On,” Young follows the melody while instilling his passionate emotions, instead of over emphasizing the colorful rhythm. The album closer “Blacked Out” is one of Young’s powerful ballads, in which the lyrics match heartache and loss to various ways one can be “blacked out.”

BRI bagwell is coming to the tap College Station will be the hot spot for live music on November 7, as Bri Bagwell and the Banned performs at the Tap at 9 p.m., immediately following the conclusion of the Chilifest Battle of the Bands. Bagwell appeared on the country music singing competition CMT’s Next Superstar in 2011, finishing in seventh place and launching quite a successful career in the Texas country music industry. The Las Cruces, New Mexico native has been named Texas Female Vocalist of the Year four times and released two albums, “Banned from Santa Fe” in 2011 and “When a Heart Breaks” in 2015, as well as a self-titled EP in 2013, all with no manager or record contract. Bagwell has the ideal voice for Texas Country. Her Southern twang is pleasantly accompanied by an earthy tone. Her songs range from the fun, party type to heartfelt lyrics that soothe the soul. Her album, “When a Heart Breaks,” is a healthy mix of both, elevated by her feisty attitude and Southern charm.
6
Bagwell’s charismatic yet strong stage presence has won over fans from across the country. Her flirty and tough charm attracts audiences, allowing her to connect with them on a personal level and letting her vulnerability shine through the lyrics. Fans react to Bagwell, whether by dancing across the floor or on a more spiritual and emotional level. Listening to Bagwell sing brings back fond memories of trucks gathered around a back-pasture fire, tailgates down and cold ones cracked open. Someone breaks out a guitar and starts strumming away. The air is crisp and the sky dark, but everyone is warm and lit up by the flames dancing to the melody, surrounded by friends and having a good ole time. Attending a live performance by Bri Bagwell and the Banned is an experience you won’t forget. Whether you have been a fan for years or are just looking to hear some new songs, it is sure to be a good time. Grab your boots, call your friends and show up early to catch both events for a great evening of live music.

DAY OF THE DEAD at MUSA Studio
They’re everywhere on Halloween night- faces painted like skulls. What are those kids trying to be? The answer lies in four short words: Day of the Dead. Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that combines ancient Aztec customs with All Souls’ Day, a holiday Spanish colonizers brought into Mexico in the early 1500s.
FREE ADMISSION FOR TAMU AND BLINN STUDENTS (with valid ID)
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated throughout Mexico on Nov. 1-2. It is seen as a sort of family reunion, only, in this case, the dead are the guests of honor. The first step is setting up a candlelit altar in their homes, so that spirits may find their way back to their loved ones. The altar is an offering of some of the favorite foods of the deceased, just in case they find themselves hungry after their journey. Items that were held near and dear to the deceased when they were alive, things like a book or a photograph, are also placed on the altar.

Once the altar is complete, the family will take off to the graveyard for a party. Families will cook grand feasts that will be eaten while tombstones are cleaned, song sung, and whispers fill the night as conversations take place with ancestors. On some occasions, parents might even bring their baby, to introduce them to a grandparent who passed before a hello could be said.

Chasing Tails is a mobile veterinary clinic that has been serving pets in the BCS area for a few years now.
You will see a bunch of friendly faces in scrubs. The staff is extremely patient and kind, and they are very knowledgeable and patient with all of the questions asked regarding the necessary shots and vaccinations. They also give little science lessons over the dangers of heartworms, rabies and other common communicable diseases, so that pet owners are able to get their animals the protection they need.
Families, college students and kids can all benefit from this awesome discounted service, which is being offered twice monthly. Helping to raise awareness and keep your pets safe, Chasing Tails is dedicated to both your and your pet’s needs. The customer service was great, and they even had big bowls full of fresh water lining their sectioned-off portion of the parking lot to the waiting dogs from getting dehydrated and uncomfortable. The staff cleverly thought to provide the option to preregister online, which makes the already efficient process all that more seamless. However, don’t fret if you forgot
While getting my fluffy kitty weighed and her temp taken, I was able to talk with the friendly vet technician who was handling Stella. “Chasing tails holds these clinics to provide the community with low cost alternatives, so that everyone can afford to keep their pet safe,” Amanda Eickery said. “We do this in hopes to reach out to the community, interact with potential clients, and get our name and brand out there.”

drew holcomb at rudder auditorium by Shelbi Polk It is always a good time in the Bryan-College Station area when a recognized band comes to town. Country seems to be the scene in this area, because great artists just keep passing through. This time around, on November 5, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors will be performing at Texas A&M’s Rudder Auditorium. Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors was formed in 2006 by Drew Holcomb, who is the lead singer. Along with Holcomb, there are three others, Nathan Dugger on guitar, Jonathan Womble on the drums, and Rich Brinsfield on bass. When the band was formed, all four lived in the same zip code in Tennessee, so they were quite literally neighbors. The band has drawn their influence from Americana music like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Holcomb had began his career as a solo artist, and he released his first full length album, “Washed In Blue,” in 2005. The album earned multiple television placements in shows like “Army Wives,” “The Cleaner,” and “United States of Tara.” While attending the University of Tennessee, Holcomb met Ellie Bannister, the daughter of producer-songwriter Brown Bannister.
Holcomb and Ellie eventually married in 2006, and she joined the band. About two years ago, she stopped touring with the band, but she still has great input when it comes to the song writing. After this great exposure, the rest of the members started coming along for the ride. With more than 100,00 albums sold and 1,800 concerts played, the Memphis and Nashville natives have also had their songs featured on popular shows such as “How I Met Your Mother,” “House M.D.,” and “Parenthood.” The band’s latest studio record, “Souvenir,” was released on March 24, 2017. Their album is a reminder of all the good memories that we often forget in this fast-paced world. It is truly an album to listen to if you enjoy country music with a little touch of serenity. The band’s upcoming show is a reserved seating event at Rudder Tower, and tickets can be purchased at the MSC Box Office, located inside Rudder Tower. If groups want to sit together, the tickets need to be purchased in the same transaction to make sure they are seated together.

BOOK REVIEW
TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN BY JOHN GREEN
Fans of John Green, author of “Fault In Our Stars” and “Paper Towns,” will be delighted to know that he’s back again, ready to delight readers with yet another bestseller. This new novel is sure to remind readers that Green writes with a magic particular to him. Green’s latest novel “Turtles All the Way Down” is sure to be on nightstands everywhere. Aza and Daisy are best friends. And like many best friends, one girl can’t do something without the other joining in too. Daisy is fearless. She is brave. She totally convinces Aza to investigate the billionaire turned fugitive Russell Pickett. There is a one-hundred thousand dollar reward at stake, and the pursuit of this mystery begins. Together, the two girls begin to unravel the answers and secrets that are somehow tied up with Russell Pickett’s son, Davis. Inside the book, we see Aza as she tries to be good. She tries to make the grades, while being a good daughter and a good detective. We also see her thoughts as they begin to spiral in multiple directions all at once, all too fast. “Turtles All the Way Down,” Green’s first book since “The Fault In Our Stars,” is darker than I could have imagined. Before there were bits and pieces of humor in his books, but those bits and pieces have rusted. At times throughout the book, the story will follow Aza down, delivering you a sense of hopelessness and an authentic fear of tunneling into “the spiral” as Green calls it. “Turtles All the Way Down” is his most mature book, and it can be hard to read at times. But only because what he writes is true. This book is real. It is frightening, but only because it is human. Aza is not alone in her story. We are all in this story.

casa hosts 2017 superhero fun run RANDY ROGERS & TURNPIKE TROUBADOURS by Azalea Andrade
Everyone needs a hero, but there are some who need Superheroes. The Bat signal has been activated and the need for flying capes is higher than ever, with the first Annual BCS Superhero Run coming up on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Lake Walk Town Center. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was created back in 1977 by Washington Judge David W. Soukup, who oversaw cases involving child abuse/neglect. These children were often taken from their home and put into the system. Beginning with an all-volunteer team, Soukup recruited and trained people from the community to step into a courtroom and fight on a child’s behalf. These volunteers soon became the Court Appointed Special Advocates, and they laid the foundation to what would later become known as National CASA. Overall, there are over 1,000 CASA programs nationwide, and there are 71 CASA programs here in our very own state of Texas. CASA came to the Brazos Valley in 2000, with the first group of volunteers completing their

training in July of 2001. In the seventeen years since, 100% of children in the Brazos Valley are being served. The Superhero run is a chance to have fun, dress up, and let these children know that they are important. The world needs superheroes. It needs us. The race calls for dressing up in your favorite superhero or villain costume, to run either a 5k or a 1k. You can enjoy a post-race dance party, food trucks, a silent auction, and a costume contest. If you want to get more involved, the bat signal is also calling for sponsors. Your sponsorship will provide a trained advocate for every child here in the Brazos Valley that has ties to the child welfare system. Some circumstances in life may have us believing that the world has no good left in it. Here is our chance to change that. Be a superhero for a night. Put on your cape, and answer the signal. There are children out there who need you.

bart alan woytek live at la salle hotel by Azalea Andrade

sound of his voice is not mixed with pop sounds, as many new country singers’ are. Woytek’s music also has a ring of authenticity that makes the music really relate to the listeners. His amazing country voice is so relaxing, which gives for an excellent country experience.
The Katy, Texas native grew up listening to classic country music, which ignited his love for singing and songwriting. During the 90s, Woytek’s career started taking off, and he performed with artists such as Kenny Chesney, Roger Creager, Gary Allan and Charlie Robison, among others.
Woytek took a break from the music scene in 2001 to focus on his family, but now he is coming back stronger than ever. If wholehearted country music is to your liking, come out and have a great time with Woytek. He will be singing some old school country music from his first big break, as well as his new single “You Can’t Leave Here with My Heart.”
Bart recorded his first album, “Reckless Hearts,” and, soon after, he released his first major-market radio single, “Tapestry Heartaches.” He co-wrote the song with Joe Diffie and Lonnie Wilson. Country music fans received the song very well, and it even made it to the top 20 in March of 2000. Woytek’s voice is like no other. brussels sprouts
Growing up, I had only ever heard of Brussels sprouts being used as torture devices to get unruly children to mind their manners. Brainwashed by their terrible reputation, the thought of eating them seemed borderline despicable. It wasn’t until adulthood that I began to give those teensy little cabbages even a moment of consideration. Maybe they deserved a second look after all. So, I looked into the matter a little further, and after a tidbit of recipe research decided I would give them a try. I might have had Brussels sprouts wrongfully pegged after all. The first cooking method I ever used for Brussels sprouts was a simple pan-sear, followed by a quick roast in the oven. They caramelized beautifully, and while somewhat bitter in nature, there was also a natural sweetness to them.

Remove from the pan using a slotted spoon, leaving behind the bacon grease, and set aside atop the paper towel. Add the sliced Brussels sprouts and shallots to the pan and sauté about 3 minutes, just until slightly wilted. Drizzle in apple cider vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Stir in cranberries, walnuts and bacon. Remove from the heat and serve right away. Makes 6-8 Servings
My husband and I actually really enjoyed them, and my daughter even ate them too. As it turned out, I wouldn’t be able to use them as a torture device after all. Bummer. My Brussels sprout game has evolved and I’ve come to enjoy them in a number of ways…even raw. How’s that for a one-eighty? But, probably my favorite way to enjoy them these days is in this easy and delicious salad, perfect for fall and winter eating. The salad features Brussels sprouts, bacon (now you see why I love it so much, right?), cranberries and walnuts. It is the perfect mix of savory, sweet and tangy. Enjoy it all on its own or serve it alongside roasted chicken, turkey or pan-seared pork chops. Please, enjoy. Ingredients 28 ounces (about 3 cups) Brussels sprouts 6 slices cold, thick-cut bacon, diced 2 shallots, thinly sliced 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/3 cup dried cranberries 1/3 cup roughly chopped walnuts Instructions Remove the outer layer and the stems of the Brussels spouts. Have ready the food processor fitted the slicer attachment. Feed in Brussels sprouts through the feed tube. Alternatively, thinly slice the Brussels sprouts by hand. Set aside until ready to use. Have ready a small plate lined with a paper towel. In a large saute pan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, saute the bacon, stirring often, until crisp.
