What if I told you that you can get paid for walking? Walking is an everyday thing. We walk around the house while doing chores. We walk from class to class. Depending on your job, sometimes it requires walking. Regardless of what you are doing during the day, walking is probably incorporated somehow. That’s right! By downloading Sweat coins, you are eligible for different monetary rewards. The app counts your steps while it is running in the background. Make sure you do not force quit the app, because it will not count your steps. The app works on a precise algorithm that works through GPS, so it only counts steps that are taken outside. The rewards you get from walking include getting paid directly on PayPal or gift cards to different places like Amazon, Forever 21, or Apple. It can be literally rewarding to be more active, even if that means just walking. Next time you are dreading walking your dog or taking the trash out, make sure you have this app, and you can turn walking into money.

Murder on the Orient Express by Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW

Movies rarely live up to their book counterparts, and, unfortunately, that is the case with “Murder on the Orient Express.” The Kenneth Branagh directed film seems overproduced and lacks depth in every other facet, which is especially disappointing considering the star-studded cast in the fourth adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel of the same name. The movie also stars Branagh as Hercule Poirot, a famous Belgian detective who is taking a break from solving crime while traveling to his next case aboard the Orient Express. However, when an avalanche derails the train engine and a murder occurs on the second night of the trip, Poirot must figure out who did it, all while he and the other passengers await help.

lacking in that department. Several moments of the movie feature very little of the visual elements coupled with a bland script and soundtrack, which resulted in a snooze-fest for the audience. As a huge fan of Christie’s novel, I was deeply disappointed with this rendition. There are few films or series of films that have captured the essence of the book, but it seems that “Murder on the Orient Express” made no attempt to do so. Instead, they relied too heavily on the visual elements and not enough on the breath-taking mystery that made Christie’s book so successful.

The film has all the fixings for a Grade-A mystery movie, but it falls short. While the production is beyond that of any previous adaptation, it is almost overkill. There is a fine line between CGI that appears real and CGI that looks almost like a cartoon. All too often in this film, it was the latter. Getting beyond the overproduced graphics, we find an underdeveloped script. There was next to no character development in this film. The audience knows nothing about the other passengers or the victim, so when the truth is revealed in a dramatic manner meant to shock the audience, it fails to do so. It is very difficult to shock someone with a revelation when there is no preconceived perception of the character. To top it all off, the soundtrack is bland at best. From the trailers, you would expect a pretty powerful lineup of songs for the film, but the excitement was

can’t help but incorporate some heartfelt tunes in their newly produced works. Lee Brice is one to follow this trend in his self-titled fourth studio album.

by Jaclyn Ysaquirre

The country star’s new record follows his three gold certified albums “Love Like Crazy” (2010), “Hard2Love” (2012) and “I Don’t Dance” (2014), and features 15 new songs, including his latest single “Boy.” Many of the songs on this album focus on Brice’s perspective of how important life is.

ARTIST: Lee Brice ALBUM: Little Things RELEASED: Nov. 3, 2017

“Little Things” seems like a party-type song from the outside in, but, even on this song about the pleasures of having your girl, your dog and a cold beer, there seems to be a sense of being content in the moment. Brice shifts to a more serious tone in “Boy,” with a bold chord that relates to anyone who has ever raised a son. Brice delivers many meaningful messages through his soulful lyrics, to emphasize that everyone has a past experience and we have to accept, move on, and appreciate life’s blessings.

HOLIDAY

MERRY MARKETPLACE EMBASSY SUITES DEC 2 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. by Azalea Andrade

If your heart starts to beat really fast at the sight of Christmas lights being put up, you can’t wait till it is socially acceptable to wear your Christmas sweaters, and you play holiday music as loud as you want, I’d say you love Christmas. And if that’s true, then you’ll love to know about an event with the name Merry Marketplace, since just the word “merry” gets your candy canes shaking. This year, the Embassy Suites in Bryan-College Station will be hosting the Merry Marketplace, a Christmas market full of vendors and holiday cheer, on Saturday, Dec. 2nd. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the market will be the perfect place for you to find unique gifts that might have you questioning who you’re buying for… you, or the person you should be shopping for? If you want to shop for yourself too, then by all means, who knows what you want better than yourself. The vendors at the Merry Marketplace are all local businesses gathering together for a beautiful Christmas market you’ll want to stay open year round. There is

something for everyone here, so get your Christmas shopping done early and get excited about all the amazing gifts you found at the Christmas market. Since Christmas shopping can be a tad bit stressful and you can never go to just one store, come to Merry Marketplace. The gifts you’ll find here won’t be things you’ll find anywhere else, and it’s all in one location. The 20+ vendors that will be in attendance are crafty, and their prices won’t make your wallet weep. We know that’s something every Christmas fanatic or Scrooge wants to hear, so come out to support the local businesses and get your Christmas spirit singing. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, and what could be better than to get all your holiday shopping early and in one place? We have all heard about the Nutcracker market, well here is something a bit more local. Get your friends, drag your significant other, don your most festive sweater, sing along to Frosty the Snowman, and make it a date at Merry Marketplace.

On Saturday December 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Shelby Tsika Photography will be hosting a brunch style workshop called Sips and Tips for anyone interested in improving their photography and styling skills. The workshop will provide visual and hands-on tutorials that will introduce beginners to photography and lighting tips for iPhone and DSLR. We got the chance to talk with Shelby Tsika herself to get an insight of her business and this fun and educational event! MW: Why did you create the event Sips and Tips? ST: I am a food and brands photographer here in College Station, and I am very active on my Instagram and Facebook accounts. I get a lot of questions of how I style foods and brands. I decided to hold a workshop in person, instead of answering questions online all the time. I wanted to do the event in a fun way! There is going to be a mimosa bar, and you can hang out with your friends. It’ll be a laidback atmosphere. We are going to go over some iPhone and photography basics, how to style foods, and learn how to style your tables for hosting. MW: Why did you chose photography as your career path? ST: I knew that I wanted to be a photographer since I was a sophomore in high school. I truly believed that God had this plan for me when I graduated high school and started my business as soon as I moved to College Station out of my hometown. My biggest passion is food and brand, and I kind of got into that later in my business, that I’ve been doing for two years now. MW: Are any of your works featured in advertisements and magazines? ST: I travel throughout Texas, have been featured in San Antonio’s Wedding magazines. I recently photographed a cookbook for the Texas A&M’s AgriLife Extension Dinner Tonight group. MW: Since you started your business after high school, how did you begin the development? Was it basically just you and your camera?

SIPS AND TIPS with Shelby Tsika Photography

ST: Yeah pretty much, I am completely self taught. I was on the yearbook staff in high school, so I guess that gave me the basics of photography. Everyone in this community is so welcoming and so nice. There have been a couple of photographers here that I reached out to, and they were more than willing to share some information and kind of help me get ready on the business side of things. Sips and Tips will take place at Studio 12 in College Station, and tickets can be purchased through www.shelbytsikaphotography.com. As a Black Friday special, tickets for the workshop will be 20% off regular price. As part of Tsika’s mission to give back to the community, 3% of the event will be donated to Imani Collective, an organization that sells sustainably and ethically sourced home décor that is handmade by over 50 empowered women in Kenya.

King of

cheesesteaks opens brick and mortar by Azalea Andrade

Blake Zeitman started off his dream of running a food business with a food truck. Five years later, he is finally opening up a brick and mortar version of Blake’s Steaks right off University Drive in College Station. He has many plans for the business, and the future’s looking bright. “I have always loved food. My passion has evolved over the years and turned itself into a business,” Zeitman said. He knew he wanted to fill a gap in the food industry here in BCS, so he went on an adventure. “I went on a road trip, ate lots of sandwiches, asked lots of questions, and tried to get as many people to let me in their kitchens as possible,” he said. Zeitman’s food truck has been a hit since the start. With over 1,000 likes on Facebook, there are nothing but good comments on his page. He is very open about his business and what goes on behind the scenes. Blake constantly posts live videos to show his followers the love he has for his business.

Zeitman is known for the delicious cheesesteaks that he’s been producing out of his food truck. His slogan “The Texas King of Cheesesteaks” really rings well with his success. Prior to opening a fixed establishment, he would station his food truck at different locations around town in order to get the most business.

Blake’s Steaks will have its official soft opening on December 1, starting at 11 a.m. For details and information, you can follow Blake’s Steaks social media. He is very active on them, and it is always great to support local businesses.

Zeitman said, “Brick and Mortar has always been the goal. We love the truck and I will continue to operate the truck, but my goal has always been multiple fixed locations.” Blake’s Steak’s menu is full of delicious options that will satisfy any hungry person looking for a great meal. From his signature cheesesteaks to wings to something more daring, Zeitman offers some interesting specialties as well as food that is more common. “Blake’s Steaks is the best Cheesesteak outside of Philly. We use Amoroso rolls that we get in from the bakery right outside of Philly. We cook em the way they do in Philly. That’s a fact,” Zeitman said. LIVE SHOW

CHASE INMAN BAND at CAVALRY COURT

The Tristan Inman Band will perform at Calvary Court on Thursday, November 30, beginning at 6 p.m. The group is a self-described “high energy band,” known for playing Texas Country music at its finest. Cleburne-native Tristan Inman is the lead singer and acoustic guitarist for the band, Springtown-native Bryan Tidwell is lead guitarist, Paluxy-native Dillen Haywood is bassist, and Glen Rose-native Justin Bullard is drummer. Together, the group writes and produces Texas country music with a passion that cannot be rivaled. The band’s success has been outstanding, considering the time they have been in the industry. Inman discovered his passion for music at the age of 15 but did not perform for a live audience until August 20, 2016, at Hollywood and Vine in Glen Rose. Eight months later, Tidwell, Haywood and Bullard joined Inman on the journey to create quality Texas Country music. Inman has that traditional, deep Southern voice that is perfect for Texas County. His strong lower register is pleasantly accompanied by an ability to hit the high notes without straining. He has that Southern twang that rattles your bones and energizes your heart. The production sound is a mix of rock and country that brings new life to an already flourishing genre. Listening to Inman sing is an experience. It is comforting and hopeful. It is energetic and soothing at the same time. We all have that one friend that breaks out a guitar and starts to sing his heart out, but only for you and your friends. You get that same feeling hearing Inman, as if you are hanging out in the living room of your buddies’ place or around a campfire, listening to a good friend play great music. The Tristan Inman Band has one goal, to bring their style of Texas County and deliver a sound that makes people feel something, and it is happening. Be the next to experience the finest Texas Country music has to offer and purchase your tickets to their show today.

Laura wilson book signing Gather around on December 5 at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station to witness and learn from a literary wonder. Laura Wilson, the renowned photographer and author, who has lectured at Harvard and the University of Texas, will be hosting a free discussion and book signing for anyone who wants to join. You will have the opportunity to meet and learn from Wilson this Christmas season, as she talks about her book “Watt Matthews of Lambshead,” which is a photographic essay about one of the longestliving great Texas cattlemen. Watt Matthews was 90 years-old and still in charge of the entire farm. Except for the four years that this man spent at Princeton University, Matthews spent his whole life ruling his ranch. This man was among one of last of the Great Texas Cattlemen. A die-hard Texas fan, the amazingly talented Wilson is currently happily married and raising a family in good ol’ Dallas, Texas. Although she has her hands full raising her three sons, Wilson has still managed to accomplish a lot in both her photography and writing career. She has completed a total of five books of photography and text. Amazingly, this woman has appeared in “The New York Times,” “The New Yorker,” “Vanity Fair,” “GQ Magazine,” “The Washington Post” and many others. She is an inspiration to artists out there, striving to tell their story and convey their passions through their work.

“Watt Matthews of Lambshead” was originally released in 1989 by the Texas State Historical Association. However, the book was recently re-released in its third edition. This piece of art is filled with strikingly beautiful images that capture the very essence of the Wild West. In Matthews’s obituary, the New York Times even wrote that this book has become, “a classic of Texas history.” Wilson is able to capture and single out a specific moment in time with incredible clarity. She pictures a memory that embodies and evokes the emotions she is trying to convey. Her images showcase the American West, and you can tell that every photograph is rich with passion. This book has been credited with many different titles and awards, including The San Antonio Conservation Society Citation and the Southwestern Booksellers Association Best Non-Fiction Book. It also won Best Art Book from both the Rocky Mountain Book Publishers Association and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame Western Heritage Wrangler. So come on out between 7 and 9 p.m. on December 5, to learn about the Wild West and hear from this truly inspirational woman. This event is completely free, however it is suggested that you make a reservation on the Library’s website, so that your spot is reserved! Also make sure to keep in mind that only books purchased at the event will be eligible to be signed. Hope to see you all there!

ASA J. Harris

Alabama roots grow in Aggieland by Justin Walker

The Brazos Valley is now home to an up-and-coming musician with a flare for southern folk and a story to tell. Asa J. Harris, or Jackson, as his friends call him, recently moved to the Bryan/College Station area for his work with the National Wild Turkey Federation. But the Eufaula, Alabama native and University of Alabama graduate is a hit with most due to his music. Harris began singing and playing the guitar at a young age, surrounded by friends and family. He spent time covering a wide range of classic country artists, including the likes of Willie Nelson and Loretta Lynn. His passion for southern folk music began in this circle, and many of his life experiences have served as a muse for his musical endeavors. From serving as a national officer for the National FFA Association to studying community development at Alabama, Harris has managed to find inspiration everywhere he looks.

Harris has a raspy quality to his voice that adds depth to his Southern folk twang. Rugged yet delicate, Harris captivates audiences with a wide range of vocal emotions, from playful and funny in his song “Pop and Rattle,” to slow and emotional in songs like like “Don’t Need This Body.” His lyrics match his vocals. From fun loving and creative to soft and heartfelt, Harris pulls audiences in with his words and takes them on a roller coaster ride of emotions during a set. With a unique perspective on life, Harris shares his life with the world without holding back. While his lyrics are very entertaining, some are definitely for an older audience. While he hasn’t booked his next gig in the Brazos Valley just yet, you can follow Harris on his Facebook account, Asa J. Harris, to see his upcoming shows. And download his soon-to-be-released album, “Naked Asa J. Harris,” on Spotify.

Deanna wendolyn at pebble creek Pebble Creek Country Club is proud to announce that singer/songwriter DeAnna Wendolyn is coming Dec. 1, so get your tickets and enjoy the show. Wendolyn is a versatile artist, in that she does everything from Americana music to island and country originals. However, she also throws some fan favorite covers into her set. Wendolyn can perform as either a solo acoustic act, duet with lead guitar, trio, or as a full four piece band. Headlining or opening for everything from wineries and country clubs to hoedowns, DeAnna Wendolyn is not someone you want to miss. Music came early to Wendolyn, and it has always been a piece of her life. What began as hearing her father playing the piano or strumming his guitar turned into DeAnna taking piano lessons and teaching herself to play guitar. She started singing regularly at the Jonnie High Show in Arlington TX, the Fort Worth Stockyards Opry and at Billy Bob’s Texas. From there, she took off and began her life as an artist. Many of Wendolyn’s songs are about loss, death, hope, love and faith. Much of that inspiration came from her father’s passing in August of 2003, after which the clouds of ashes and loss of faith

stayed with DeAnn for five years. It wasn’t until October of 2009 that she began to heal. In October of 2009, DeAnna Wednolyn walked into a studio and recorded her first album, “From the Ashes,” in just two days. All twelve songs on the album, plus the bonus track, were written and performed by DeAnna. Her first album was released in December of that same year. In 2011, a new album, “Untethered,” was recorded, but this time with guitarist Ron Geida of Villain Vanguard (a popular Fort Worth band) who now performs with DeAnna at most shows. The duo performs everything from country, easy listening, and folk to rock, but they mainly play original compositions. Showing everywhere from local coffee shops to wineries, DeAnna Wendolyn is not someone you want to miss. Her music speaks to all of us who have in some way experienced pain and heartbreak but have also learned to smile again. Go to Pebble Creek Country Club December 1 at 7 p.m. I’ll see you there.

CHOCOLATE

IN THE KITCHEN

With KELLY

Every year, when the cold weather would finally mosey on into Texas, we could count on the fact that hot chocolate would most definitely be served that day. The packages would come out, the cups full of water would go into the microwave, and in no-time flat, my brother and I would be burning our lips without any hesitation on a mug full of cocoa. While the packaged cocoa of my youth brings back nostalgic memories of my childhood days, the excitement for a sip of pre-packaged hot chocolate infiltrated with freeze-dried marshmallows will likely stay in the past. You see, after you’ve tried real, homemade hot chocolate made with pure vanilla extract and milk, I suspect you too will leave those cravings behind. Homemade hot chocolate is special, and there isn’t a mix out there that could hold a candle to it. Ingredients matter and quality can make all the difference in the world. Homemade hot chocolate is rich and decadent. A treat that warms your soul and satisfies every sweet-tooth Christmas-y craving in the book. Ingredients 1 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt 1 cup water 5 cups milk 1 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Instructions In a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and water and whisk to combine. Allow mixture to come to a rapid simmer, and pour in milk and cream. Stir often until heated through. Add the vanilla, and stir once more. Ladle into a mug, top with marshmallows (if desired), serve and enjoy.
