THE COMMUTER

by Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW

2018 is projected to be a good year in film. Big names, anticipated sequels and dramatic true stories are all making their way to the big screen this year. In one of the first action movie releases of the season, “The Commuter” both entertains and slightly disappoints. Liam Neeson plays Michael, a middle-class husband and father living an average life. Wake up, get dressed, breakfast with the family, chat/fight with the wife as she drives him to the train station, visit with the regulars aboard the commuter train, then off to another day on the job as a financial advisor. Unfortunately for Michael, he’s let go five years before retirement, with a second mortgage and college tuition both due. As he sits on the train on his way home, Michael is approached by a strange woman with a proposition for him: there’s a person aboard the train that doesn’t belong; find them, and receive $100,000. Before he can decide, she exits the train at the first stop. He must decide if he indeed wants to take up the offer, and if the money is worth the unknown result of the person he finds. If you’ve seen one Liam Neeson movie, you’ve seen them all. Neeson doesn’t disappoint in this film, delivering a strong, believable performance from the start. Unfortunately, he’s the only one. The other actors come across as forced, turning an action film into a drama. And while most of the film is realistic, certain scenes defy logic and the forces of nature, leaving a bad taste in viewers’ mouths. Overall, it’s not a bad movie. Certain lines, especially in the final scenes, are corny and unnecessary, but the writing is strong throughout. “The Commuter” would benefit from better acting, more realistic moments, and maybe an unexpected plot twist. I recommend it, but on the condition that you wait for it to show on television or Netflix. I’m afraid it’s just not worth the price of admission.

ALBUM REVIEW After the explosive hit single “Havana,” Cuban singersongwriter Camila Cabello has released her debut album “Camila.” Cabello was formerly a member of the pop group Fifth Harmony, which came into the limelight after competing in the televised singing competition “The X-Factor” in 2012. But she’s begun her solo career by collaborating with artists such as Shawn Mendes and Machine Gun Kelly.

ARTIST: Camila Cabello ALBUM: Camila RELEASED: Jan. 12, 2018

This pop album features latin and R&B influences, along with themes of heartache, new love, and friendship. Additionally, the songs cover a variety of genres. “She Loves Control” has the same Reggae feel that “Havana” had, while “Real Friends” and “All These Years” are more like acoustic ballads. The album has the feel-good beats that are expected from a pop album, while still talking about heartbreak. The album showcases her versatility and ability to effortlessly switch between styles. It was disappointing to see the lack of artist collaborations in the album, but, nevertheless, Cabello is an artist to watch in 2018.

MUSIC It takes a special type of person to hit it big. It takes patience, drive and skill. Josh Ward has all three. His patience has paid off. His drive has brought him success. His skill is unmatched. What started as killing time between rodeo events has morphed into a chart-topping career. We sat down with Josh to discuss his career, his success and his upcoming trip to Aggieland. MW: So tell me, how’d you get started in music? JW: I played a bunch whenever I was rodeoing, and I’d play for my buddies on the road. That was the first audience that I had. Years later, I kinda did the whole acoustic thing. People told me that I really needed to pursue that. I ended up starting the band. 15 years later, here we are! I mean, there’s a lot of in between there too, but it’s been a wild ride. Started out paying the bar scenes, really whoever would listen. Played all the cover scenes, played a bunch of cover songs. Finally got into some of the “A-list” venues, kinda for some speciality shows. MW: Well you’ve had a lot of success in those 15 years. What do you contribute that to? JW: Oh man, hard work and a no-quit attitude! I mean, I’ve got a great band, we’re writing some really great tunes, and I’ve surrounded myself with some good folks in the business. My writers, my producers, that kind of thing. It takes a village to run a camp like this and to stay on top of this. It ain’t all me, I can tell you that! I write the songs and sing but there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes things that are going on, and it’s working. I’m thankful for all the success that we’ve got. Hopefully there’s more to come with this new record in the spring. We’re gonna be hitting it with both barrels. MW: So you’ve had 9-consecutive #1 hits. What is it like to see your music doing so well? JW: It feels great! It definitely tells me that it’s worth the payoff. The #1s, those are icing on the cake. You get out here, you write the best you can, you run up and down the road and play all these shows. It’s kinda the pat on the back and the “Hey, man. Good job.”

Josh ward EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

by Justin Walker

MW: What would you is the most influential experience you’ve had for your career and for your life? JW: You wanna talk about influential, I grew up on the older music. Haggard, Jones, Willie, stuff like that. I never got to meet any of those guys but they’ve had a lot to do with what I’m doing. Everyone tells us, “Oh man, you’re traditional country.” I think, we might be a little bit, but we’re a little of the other side too. I just wanna be recognized as good country music. Took a little bit from everything I learned from those guys. As far as life changing, when you do this for 15 years, it’s hard to answer that question. I look up to a bunch of those guys as far as being the guys I’ve always listened to. But 15 years, it’s all a blur now! MW: For your new album coming out this year, what can we expect? JW: Well it’s definitely gonna be country! But we are leaning on this record. We are taking an edgier approach with these songs than I’ve cut before. You can tell that the band has grown, the music has grown, and the business has grown. It’s gonna be a great record, I can tell you that. It’s gonna be big time. I worked with a lot of great writers on this one. Josh Ward will be performing at the Tap on Jan. 30. We highly recommend grabbing your friends and heading out to see his show.

ART HISTORY FOR PEOPLE IN A HURRY by Jaclyn Ysaquirre

Sometimes art museums can be downright intimidating.

she continues to produce her own art in addition to working for Texas A&M.

Without years spent studying the context of an artist’s cultural moment or the development of a specific movement in a specific country, it can be difficult to understand the importance of individual works of art.

The SEAD Gallery, located in the Federal Building in Historic Downtown Bryan, regularly hosts lectures and conversation groups through the SEAD After Dark events. Their hope is to engage the community in informative discussions on many topics surrounding art through events led by local experts in their fields.

Luckily, Jenn Korolenko has done all of that homework for you, and she wants to share her notes.

8

Beginning on January 30, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Korolenko will be facilitating an event called “Art History for People in a Hurry,” the latest installment in the SEAD Gallery’s SEAD After Dark series. This ambitious event aims to cover everything from cave paintings to contemporary art in just an hour and a half.

“Art History for People in a Hurry” is only one session of a three-part series on art appreciation, and tickets are $9.50 for individual classes or $25 for access to all three. The evening is more than just a PowerPoint of famous paintings, as the lesson will include interactive discussions, snacks and a BYOB friendly venue. You can register for the event on the SEAD Gallery’s website, at http:// www.seadgallery.com/sead-after-dark/.

Korolenko, though, is particularly equipped for this sprint through art history. She currently serves as the Curator of Education & Public Programs for the Texas A&M University Art Galleries Department and has over a decade’s worth of experience in the art education world. Korolenko studied studio art and art education, and

So if you’re at all curious why the Mona Lisa is so famous, how a urinal ever counted as art, or why you should know the name Kehinde Wiley, here is your chance to get some answers! Hopefully, you will leave the evening feeling a little more equipped for your next trip to the museum.

Haven’t read the books? Don’t stress. Hop online and watch the fourth season of “Game of Thrones,” as all questions will cover content from the television show, not the novels. Cheaters be warned, you will be eliminated. I would assume the consequences would be similar to the Red Wedding, but I can’t say for sure. Players must show up on time. Round 1 begins at 7 p.m. sharp. Late arrivals will not be allowed to compete, nor will their tickets be refunded. Players under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Both will have to purchase tickets to compete. What’s at stake? Pride of course. But there will also be a prize basket full of “Game of Thrones” themed items, to materialize your success. While winter may have already come to Aggieland, leaving the show on a break, “Game of Thrones” fans can still enjoy themselves, thanks to Blackwater Draw Brewing Company. The local favorite is hosting a “Game of Thrones” trivia night on January 24, from 7 to 9 p.m.

It’s hard to name a show that has been as polarizing or captivating as HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” From gifs to memes to Halloween costumes, “Game of Thrones” cultural references have become an interesting and entertaining part of society.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

> Powell Brothers The Powell Brothers, a Houston-based country/Americana band, had quite the year in 2017. They survived making and losing an EP, re-recording it as a full album, and a tour schedule that included stops at several major sporting events and the Texas State Fair. The band is kicking off another busy year with a stop at Hurricane Harry’s on January 26, so you’ve got a chance to see the results of all their hard work! We caught up with The Powell Brothers lead singer Taylor Powell on the road to a show in Austin in this exclusive interview. MW: So y’all are coming off of a really busy year. Tell me about some of the highlights of 2017 for you? TP: I have to say it’s been a blur. It was an incredible year! We were working on our new record, so that was done later in the year, in November I believe. We were in Nashville recording that, so that was very, very exciting. And you know we got to do some big firsts that we’ve been looking forward to for years. We go to do the Texas State Fair. Some big, massive shows with

Pat Green, and that was amazing. We were able to basically be a part of a lot of different sporting events, a lot of baseball games. We got to sing the national anthem for the Astros, who are our home team, the Rangers, the San Diego Padres out in California. We are so thankful we got invited out to Las Vegas to be a part of the Las Vegas Bowl. Not to mention several other bowls, including the Alamo Bowl. There were so many amazing highlights that it’s hard to pinpoint one. My personal favorite is that we got to start really playing consistently at Gruene Hall. Gruene Hall has taken us in and been so kind to us. So we’re probably there once every other month. We were there at the end of the year with Roger Kreager which was fantastic. MW: How long have y’all been playing together and working for this? I’d love to hear about how you got started. TP: The Powell Brothers are about three or four years old. We started the band in 2013 or 2014. Before that, Blake and I were both musicians in several other bands. We’d been touring around Texas and America for the last probably 10 or 12 years. We were always songwriters, so we were playing these other bands.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW we were able to get our foot in the door and meet the people. And we just got along so well, and we’ve been playing there ever since! And we look forward to seeing those people every time. They’re so wonderful! And the same thing can be said for ESPN. You know, ESPN is such a big organization, and it seems so far away from a couple of kids from Houston. But the more people we meet, the more we realize it’s not just an organization. It’s made up of wonderful people! So we are just getting to befriend some amazing people, in a lot of places that we never thought we were going to be able to. It’s just very cool. MW: Tell me some more about this album that’s coming out! What can we be expecting from you guys?

And we kind of decided, after doing it for so long, we think we can give this a run ourselves. So we recorded an acoustic EP, just kind of seeing where it would lead, and we’ve been going ever since. I believe that was 2014, and we just started and never stopped. We pushed forward and opportunity has opened itself up to us. We’re just so thankful that we’ve been busy! MW: So you were both separately doing music? What was the catalyst for you guys coming back together? Also, I’m assuming you are actually brothers? TP: Yes, we are brothers. We played in several bands, kind of criss-crossed throughout the years with different opportunities. Blake had an opportunity to go up to Nashville and get some work up there, and I was getting some different offers from around Texas. So we decided if we were going to officially part ways and move to different states, let’s at least get together, and record and see what happens. So after we recorded that, he turned down his offers, I turned down mine, and we’ve just been going ever since MW: Awesome! So what does 2018 look like for you guys? Got a similarly busy tour schedule lined up?

TP: Well I’ll kind of tell you the story of how the record came about. Obviously, we’re from Houston. We were going to record a five song EP on our own. We kind of decided that we’d played on enough records, we’ve worked with studios, we kind of knew what we’re doing. So we thought we’d record our own record our own way, ourselves. So we were recording it ourselves in our house, and it was coming out great. We were very excited. Then, I think that was September, and Hurricane Harvey came, and we had a little bit of trouble. It kind of wiped out our studio, and we lost our record. We were kind of starting over, and we had some friends who were working very successfully in Nashville, playing for some massive bands. We’ve always wanted to work together, and just on a whim we kind of reached out. We had a four day block of dates that we could go anywhere and record. And all those people we wanted to work with, who were so busy, it turned out they all had those four days. And that does not happen. So we were like “well, I guess we’re gonna go up to them!” So we changed our EP to a full length record, and we went out to Nashville and worked with these people. It was incredible, and we could not be more excited about what’s coming. MW: That’s crazy! TP: Yeah. It was one of those things that was a tough situation going into it, but it almost seems like it was totally on purpose. Because I think this record is turning into something I don’t think we totally could have planned. MW: So did you already have the songs ready? Or how did that work with changing your plans?

MW: Those relationships are a pretty cool element of the music industry that you don’t hear about all that often from the outside, I feel like!

TP: We had had maybe four of the songs ready to go, and you know they were road tested songs. We’ve been playing them, and we know that they worked. And we knew it was enough to build a record off of, and so we just kept writing. And we probably went into that session with 20 songs ready to go and demoed. Certain songs that we’d planned on being on the record got cut, and certain songs that I thought were just extra to have as backups ended up getting put on the record. We all just looked at it, and, once everyone on the team was in the same room, we were able to look at it objectively. And I realized, “Okay, there are some songs on here that I wrote, and I liked,” but they were able to take it to a different place that made it even better. So I think one of the songs we wrote when we first started the band, and we’ve always had it. We played it through the years and never recorded it. We showed it to our friends, and they were just like “yeah this has to go on the record, we can make it amazing.” You know there were songs that were months old, songs that are weeks old, songs that are years old and songs that are currently being tweaked right now.

TP: It’s incredible. We’ve known about Gruene forever, and we’ve been trying to play there since we were in high school. And finally, I think it was two years ago,

MW: So it sounds like it really comes back to that collaboration and those relationships for this album too.

TP: The big thing on our personal radars is finishing the record. We’re gonna be going back to Tennessee here in a couple weeks to just finish off some loose ends. The record we hope will be out in the summer. So that’s where we’re focused! But yeah we’re going from here probably until June. It’s pretty outrageous. The schedule is amazing. We’ll be continuing to play shows at Gruene. We’ve built up some amazing relationships with different sports teams and some amazing folks over at ESPN events, who are the people who brought us up to the Vegas Bowl. Just so many amazing opportunities are on the horizon, so we’re just trying to capitalize on that and do what we can to chase those opportunities. We’re just trying to keep up with everything that’s happening and the best thing is the relationships with these people. They’re really, really wonderful people!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW TP: That is what it’s all about! It is amazing to see these songs that we’ve known and played and loved, and watch them get flipped on their heads. And seeing that they’re even more than we thought they were. And there are certain songs that I was really pumped about that we realized aren’t bad, but there are other songs that are even more and better. So it’s interesting to see how the record is playing out. Because I like to plan things meticulously when it comes to songs, but then, when we were all in the same room, a lot of things got changed. And it is turning out even better than we could have hoped for at the beginning. It is very, very exciting! MW: Are there any themes to the album? Anything to be listening for? What do you hope that people take away from your album? TP: Well, we just put out a single that’s going on the radio right now. It’s going to be on the new record, and the song’s called “Coming Home.” A lot of the theme of the record is travel, coming home, having to leave friends behind and looking forward to the day you get to come back. A lot of it is that. There are plenty of love songs, relationship songs, but a lot of it is travel. So obviously, that is our life. That is something we are very familiar with, so that is one of the all encompassing themes of the record. MW: How would you say that’s shaped you in your music and your journey? I’d love to hear more about how travel is really a defining thing for your music. TP: A lot of it is lyrically. I went to school for songwriting, and I was told that

there’s always room for one more love song. For one more good love song. And I totally agree with that, but, over the last three or four years, we’ve spent our entire lives on the road. And we’ve had less time for other such things. So I believe that you write what you know, and that is what we know, being on the road. Getting to meet amazing people and never getting to know them as well as you wish you could. But learning to embrace that and enjoy it. It is wonderful. I mean it’s an interesting way of living once you can appreciate what it is. There are certain things you just have to give up because you can’t do it. But we are also afforded some amazing opportunities and experiences, and we’re living our dream you know? So learning to appreciate that and accept that it is a beautiful road and way of life. And a lot of that, coming to understand sleeping alone at night, being out on the road away from all your friends and family. Once you can learn to appreciate that it is awesome. A lot of that record is my personal coming to understand that. MW: Have your travels taken you through college station before? TP: Yes! We played Hurricane Harry’s with Kyle Park in October of last year. We love College Station. We’ve played there with tons of other bands, and we are so excited to be coming back next week! It’s one of my favorite towns in the state! MW: I mean I’m definitely a little biased, but I’d have to agree with you. TP: We love it! Every time we go to Hurricane Harry’s they treat us so well, and people are wonderful. I just can’t wait.

MENTORS & MAKERS: Lathe workshop Remember back in elementary school, when the art teacher allowed everyone to play with clay and mold it into whatever their premature brain desired? I personally remember thinking the kiln was such a cool concept. Over the years, we have come to understand that hands on activities such as writing, sewing, playing guitar, and, of course, pottery making are a great way for people of all ages to sit back, relax, lower that blood pressure and relieve some stress. With that being said, using a lathe to create art is an awesome and unique way to have fun, while also learning with either your friend or partner. A lathe is a tool that spins a piece of metal, wood or clay to make it easier to work on. Pottery wheels are one of the most recognizable kinds of lathes, but lathes are also used for practical things like carving furniture legs and smoothing gun barrels. Mentors & Makers, a local space dedicated to making it possible for the community learn new skills they might not otherwise have the equipment for, will be holding lathe classes on January 24, 27 and 30. At these beginners workshops, groups of two will learn about the anatomy of woodworking with a lathe. They will be expertly guided through all the spinning instructions and made aware of all safety

precautions. Talented and knowledgeable staff members are happy to help and assist with any questions or concerns regarding all the projects. Partners will each be given the unique opportunity to work with awesome state of the art equipment. Two people for the price of one! For the cheap price of $35, two individuals (ages 15 and above) will be able to share a spindle and create their own masterpiece. In conclusion to this entertainingly informational class, each participant will personally take home a finished turning. The sky is the limit in these workshops, as anything is possible in their fully equipped woodworking and metalworking shop. All differing types from around the community are welcome at the College Station workshop, where classes are held year-round. For more information check out or to register for this unique lathe workshop please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lathe-workshoptickets-41564828521?aff=efbevent or the Mentors & Makers personal business site.

By prematurely pinpointing diagnosis, scheduling interventions and researching targeted medications, mental illness can be treated effectively. For more information regarding this organization please visit https://namibv.org/eventregistration/?ee=470 and to sign up for the local event occurring later this month.

YOGA

Yoga at market 1023 by Tyler Lewis

Whether you’re looking at getting into meditation, zen and other means of relaxation or just relieve a little stress, yoga at Market 1023 is the place for you. Market 1023 is a little shop located in the heart of Downtown Bryan that specializes in home decor, homemade goods, and vintage finds. Fortunately for you, they will be hosting their first yoga class...inside of the store. Julie Kircher, the instructor for class, is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, and has been practicing yoga since 2014. “I was prompted to get into yoga for fitness and health reasons,” Kircher said. The owners of Market 1023 wanted to find a fun and creative way to build community around the Bryan/College Station area, and, since Kircher was already frequently collaborating with their business, it was practically a perfect match. The class is a beginner’s yoga class meant for anyone to join,

whether you have years of experience or none at all. The class will focus on slower, sustainable movements, learning basic poses that can be done at home, and adjusting the poses to fit the body. There will also be muscle stretching and some all over body relaxation to get the year started off right. Kircher intends for the class to give participants some ideas on how to practice on their own. “Yoga is for everybody, and anyone can benefit from it,” Kircher said. Kircher believes that yoga is beneficial to everyone, whether you need to strengthen and stretch out muscles or find a routine that gets you moving a bit each day. Calming the mind and moving the body have shown to aid in relaxation and stress relief, in addition to improving flexibility and toning muscles. The class will be held on January 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, and space is very limited. You can sign up on their website, www.market1023.com, or in person at the store.

SHINING A LIGHT

in the brazos valley on human trafficking by Ashali Chimata

Human trafficking is an issue that we often associate with large cities. However, many groups are trying to raise awareness of the prevalence of trafficking in the Bryan/College Station area. The Texas A&M College of Nursing, in conjunction with Wake Up, Aggieland, the Brazos Valley Coalition for the Homeless and their subcommittee on Trafficking, Exploitation, Slavery and LGBTQI, will be hosting the first “Coordinating Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking” conference on Friday, January 26. The conference will feature several speakers in the field of human trafficking, such as Kirsta Melton from the Texas Attorney General’s office, Theo Williams from the Houston FBI Office, and Andrea Sparks from the Texas Governor’s Office.

area. The group began when several community members saw a need for resources and awareness for this problem. Calanog is a licensed social worker who worked with the Brazos Valley Sexual Assault Resource Center for several years. She wants people to know that this is not an issue that is unique to metropolitan cities, especially given the large sporting events held here. “The Bryan/College Station area is in the middle of the Texas trafficking triangle, between Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston.” Calanog explained.

Various topics, such as prevention of trafficking in Texas, social services for survivors, and the link between trafficking and pornography, will be discussed. Additionally, there will be resources available for those who would like to become more involved in ending trafficking in the Brazos Valley

Everyone is encouraged to attend the conference, especially law enforcement and medical professionals, educators, social service providers, attorneys, advocates, and students. However, seating is limited to a hundred people. The conference, which will be held at the College of Nursing’s Health Professions Education Building, is from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and registration is $20. The registration fee will also include access to continuing education units across various careers, and a lunch.

Tracey Calanog is one of the founders of Wake Up, Aggieland, a group aimed at bringing awareness to power-based personal violence in the
