Teaching responsibility can be a challenging task to take on. Luckily the mobile app Homey - Chores and Allowance has your back. Homey is an ideal and convenient way to teach your children about the importance of money, completing chores and working toward goals. The mobile app allows parents to demonstrate how money is earned by paying their kids commission for the chores that they complete around the house. With Homey, parents can support their children in reaching long-term goals and saving money. The app will teach kids about financial responsibility and delayed gratification by giving them incentives that differ in value. Children will learn that at times they will need to work longer or harder to earn more money. Not only does Homey teach responsibility, but it also teaches real life financial skills. Homey teaches kids banking and how they can gain interests on their savings. It enables parents to transfer money kids earns directly into their checking or saving account. With Homey, you can set daily, weekly or monthly reminders for recurring or one time chores for the entire family. Other features include managing allowance and extra money reward for each child, and tracking IOU.
MOVIE: maze runner the death cure MOVIE REVIEW
by Ashali Chimata
The final film installment of the “Maze Runner” trilogy was released last month and has proven that young adult dystopian has been phasing out. The novels, written by James Dashner, were written and adapted into films around the time that many other dystopian teen novels were released. However, the common motifs of love triangles, futuristic worlds, nefarious elite, and adolescent heroes has become predictable and generic. “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” was released quite a few years after the sequel, “The Scorch Trials,” to allow Dylan O’Brien, the actor who plays the main character, to recover from an injury. It had quite a few loose ends to tie up, and so those who have not already seen the past films or are not invested in the series may not enjoy it as much. Additionally, much of the plot felt formulaic, for someone who has read and seen “Divergent,” “Hunger Games,” and “The Giver.” The hero, Thomas, is an unbranded typical young adult protagonist. Moreover, the film can make you feel as though you are trapped inside a video game. That said, there are some aspects of this series that proved to be unique. Many other young adult dystopia films depict the wicked government or entity to be evil for the sake of it. However, in “The Maze Runner,” the oppressive corporation is using children in an effort to cure a disease. Overall, the finale of “The Maze Runner” trilogy will provide a fix for those craving young adult dystopia. However, it seems to be one of the last blockbusters in this subgenre for some time.
ALBUM REVIEW The Wombats, an English indie rock/alternative band formed in 2003, nailed it with their latest project. “Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life” is the group’s fourth studio album. Although they put together a track list of individual songs, each unique in lyrical content, The Wombats reached a level of cohesiveness in sound and mood to create an album perfect for casual listening all the way through. It is interesting, smart and occasionally soothing.
by Abby Newton
The Wombats use metaphors and symbolism better and more often than most other bands. Maybe it is due to the genre, but this band’s lyrics often manage to be simple as well as meaningful. “Turn,” the most electronic song on the album, is about recklessness and the need for a little drama. “Ice Cream” and “Dip You in Honey” are harder-hitting rock songs, while “Cheetah Tongue,” “Lemon to a Knife Fight” and “I Only Wear Black” take advantage of more psychedelic sounds and vocals. There are varying styles throughout the record, but the band does each of them so well.
ARTIST: The Wombats ALBUM: Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life RELEASED: Feb. 9, 2018
In comparison to previous music from The Wombats, this album is slightly less synth-driven and electronic. The band focused mainly on rock and psychedelic influences. If you enjoy bands like The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys or The Strokes, this is a new album you need to check out.

SHANE SMITH AT THE TAP
by Justin Walker
>
shane smith
Shane Smith and the Saints are headed back to the Bryan-College Station music scene, performing at the Tap on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
that audiences connect with his work by the powerful reaction their fans experience when hearing their music.
Based in Austin, Shane Smith and the Saints entertain audiences with a mix of folk, rock, country and Americana. The band, comprised of Shane Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica), Chase Satterwhite (bass and harmony vocals), Zach Stover (drums), Tim Allen (lead guitar and harmony vocals) and Bennett Brown (fiddle and harmony vocals), is often compared to big names such as Mumford & Sons, Band of Horses and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
There is a diversity of tempo among their songs, and in some cases, within their songs. “All I See Is You” is a perfect example, as the song starts off soft and slow, before picking up the pace and telling an incredible story. “What a Shame” begins very calmly and stays that way for a majority of the song. However, the momentum slowly builds, with a very uptempo pace that engages the listener. “Lord Bury Me in Texas” offers a consistent tempo coupled with powerful vocals and lyrics that will leave every Texan swelling with pride.
Not only are Shane Smith and the Saints hitting it big in Texas, with sold-out shows in Dallas, Lubbock and Austin, but they have quite the national presence as well. The band has has toured through much of the central portions of the country, from New Mexico to Tennessee and Wyoming to Mississippi. They have even had the opportunity to perform at the Red Dirt Pub Crawl in Dublin, Ireland. The lyrics of their music are very powerful, with rich storytelling accompanied by strong vocals. Shane takes no shortcuts when writing songs, and it is clear
Shane Smith and Saints will be taking part in the Tap’s acoustic series, which has already hosted amazing performances from artists such as Josh Ward and Flatland Cavalry. The Tap will definitely be the place to be when Shane Smith and the Saints show up. Grab your friends and head on over for a performance that will surely entertain everyone in attendance.

TED TALK TUESDAY: can we have it all?
Join the Young Professionals of Aggieland (YPA) for a stimulating conversation that is sure to have your neurons tingling. Taco Tuesday just got a lot more interesting, and intellectual for that matter. On Feb 27, TED Talk Tuesday will take place right here in College Station. This hour long event will begin at 7 p.m. and will be hosted at Aloft, a new hotel in the area. Contrary to popular belief, these TED Talks are somewhat different from traditional ones. There isn’t actually a speaker present like in the original talks, however a stimulating TED talk will be projected and then discussed after the viewing. The Young Professionals of Aggieland is a social and networking service outreach group committed to improving the surrounding community through professional development. This nonprofit organization, located in Bryan, Texas, really seems like a fun-loving group of people who are determined to give back and contribute to society by giving helping those less fortunate than others. This upcoming TED Talk will be featuring public policy expert AnneMarie Slaughter talking about her 2012 article, which made waves shortly after its release, titled “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All.”
8
Slaughter uses her time to expand on her ideologies about the work culture and public policies that could ultimately lead to more equality for both men and women. This is not the first time the YPA has hosted a Ted Talk, as last year there seemed to be quite a few previous events on the local group’s Facebook page! At YPA it seems like there are many different events with which to get involved. Being part of a team has never seemed so painless! This organization was founded in 2010, and its membership is completely free. The group is just composed of young professionals who wish to make an impact in their community all while growing, networking and learning alongside like-minded individuals. Since its foundation, this charitable and educational group has grown to include over 1,200 professionals ranging from their earlier 20s all the way up to professionals in their 40s. This meetup seems like is a great way to promote the growth and sharing of different ideas. Head over to the Aloft later this month to provoke some thoughts, all while giving yourself room to professionally develop.

Joey Kipfer is coming to Aggieland on Thursday, Feb. 22, and he is bringing his mesmerizing vocals and guitar talents along for the ride. Kipfer, a Liberty Hill, Texas native, grew up playing music, but also saw success on the field. He was a two-sport athlete at Liberty Hill High School, performing well at both football and soccer. During his senior season, Kipfer scored nine goals in 23 games played for the Panthers, helping the team to a district title. Still, music was his true passion, and for good reason. Kipfer has a very relaxed quality to his music. Performing comes very naturally to him, and, while he can get into his music and let it take over, it has an effortless feel that is very comforting for the audience. Kipfer performs many of his own songs, accompanying his vocals with his guitar, which is a skill that really adds to the entire show. Kipfer’s single “No Shame” showcases his vocal range while allowing him to show off with his instrument. His song “Bottom of a Glass” is so well written and well performed that you might think it’s already a classic. When he does do a cover, such as “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” by Cage the Elephant, Kipfer knocks it out of the park, proving he can turn tried and true songs into his own. Kipfer’s voice adapts to the needs of the song, fluctuating from smooth and delicate to raspy and aggressive. It is not often that audiences hears an artist with the ability to do this. Kipfer is not only capable of such a feat, he does it with ease, captivating fans throughout any venue he attends.

at THE THEATRE COMPANY Come one, come all and witness the majestic era of kings, queens, knights and more at the Theatre Company’s production of Camelot. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s “Camelot” brings the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table to life with an extraordinary music score and a story that dramatizes the human conflict at the heart of this timeless tale. Based on T.H. White’s novel “The Once and Future King,” “Camelot” tells the story of Arthur, a young squire who becomes King after extracting the sword Excalibur from its legendary rock. The show opens in the midst of the epic battle that destroyed King Arthur’s kingdom and travels back to tell the story of how the battle came to be. The musical follows Arthur from a young, earnest and idealistic king to the despairing and aged king bearing witness to his dream’s demise. Arthur’s dream is inspired by his vivacious Queen Guinevere. Together, they create a kingdom where people work to uphold what is right and the king serves at a round table with no head, symbolizing collaboration and unity. But just as this utopian vision starts to become reality, everything begins to unravel. When Guinevere falls in love with Arthur’s most celebrated, beloved and loyal knight, Lancelot, they begin a romance that is as doomed as it is passionate. Their troubles are compounded when Arthur’s illegitimate son, Mordred, arrives on the scene. The history of the Theatre Company dates back to their first public performance in April 1987, which included the audience and actors both being on stage. Almost 31 years later, the company has produced some of the most elegant, well choreographed and talent filled shows in the Bryan-College Station area. Past seasons have included shows like “Annie,” “The Sound of Music,” “Bye Bye Birdie” and “The Rocky Horror Show.” Alongside “Camelot,” audiences can also see the remains shows on their current season, which includes “Big: The Musical,” “The Threepenny Opera,” and “Rock of Ages.” Performances of Camelot will begin February 23 and will run through March 4, 2018. SKIP HOLLANDSWORTH HOW TO BECOME A STAR WRITER by Azalea Andrade
Many were shocked by Hollandsworth’s first published book, “The Midnight Assassin: Panic, Scandal, and the Hunt for America’s First Serial Killer,” which featured vivid historical detail about a 19th century Austin, TX murderer. Its honesty and compelling nature contributed to his reputation as one of the best storytellers in the country. “Still Life,” another widely-known pieces by Hollandsworth, explores the story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. Hollandsworth followed this story long after in was no longer news. With themes of courage, perseverance and a mother’s love, “Still Life” is moving, and it is representative of the best from Hollandsworth.
by Abby Newton Despite changes in style, context or genre, writers paint pictures using thoughtfully placed words that ignite the imagination and force emotion and interest from readers.
“How to Become a Star Writer” is an opportunity to learn from an awardwinning journalist and author that no writer will want to miss.
Investigative journalist and movie maker Skip Hollandsworth will be bringing his insight and knowledge about the inner workings of the world of journalism all the way to College Station.
Several alternate options for participation are available including interactive video conference, live stream or a free recording of the event to watch at your own convenience. Unfortunately, the deadline to submit questions for the video conference has passed, but join in for an astounding story of a fearless journalist who took the country by storm with his unique writing style and passion for the truth.
Hollandsworth wants to teach you how to be a star writer in the field of journalism, and, as a staff writer at Texas Monthly Magazine since 1989, he is fit for the job.
Either tune in to the live stream or head to the event, as Hollandsworth will be speaking and answering questions from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on February 22 at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center.
