Going on group trips, outings and getaways with your friends and family can be tons of fun. However, getting everyone on one accord concerning details of the trip can be challenging, especially when finances are involved. Well, Yahoo Finance has introduced their new mobile app, Tanda: Saving with Friends to help solve this issue. Tanda is designed to help you save up for the things that you want with the support of those you trust. Tanda allows people to join a group of five to nine members, in which each member undergoes an identity verification. Members contribute a set amount of money into the shared pool and the cycle repeats until everyone receives a payout. If you’re still uneasy about the process, Tanda gives you peace of mind by covering contributions of group members if they stop contributing. With Tanda, you sign up with a valid ID and U.S. bank account. Then you’ll create a savings circle with friends and choose a payout position (certain fees and restrictions may apply). Lastly, you’ll make regular contributions into your shared pool and take your payout when it’s your turn. So what are you waiting for? Grab your crew and start saving today.
fifty shades of fake
A brutally honest movie review of Fifty Shades Freed by Madison Caldwell
MOVIE REVIEW
This movie should be called “Fifty Shades of Fake” if you ask me. Nothing about this film portrayed the reality of actual love, except for the fact that romance is sometimes a complete waste of time, money and energy. I went into this film as unbiased as possible, as I had attempted to read the first novel and had to stop due to the dullness of tone and character development. Needless to say, as the theater grew dark and the Valentines couples and rowdy chick groupies settled in, I hoped for something like a worthwhile experience. I mean hey, the previews of this installment of the “50 Shades” saga looked somewhat suspenseful, as well as less explicit and sexually charged than the previous two. But no, the experience was less than satisfying, to say the least. The plot line was all over the place, over-packed with events. Everything happened way too quickly, and, like the cherry on top of an already melted sundae, even the slow jams playing continuously throughout the film were substandard and mediocre (talk about a bummer). Beginning and ending in dramatic “get down” tunes, this tale had a “Twilight” level cheesy soap opera
storyline (you know, except that there were whole lot less vampiricism and much more of a slippery X-rated undertone.) The ever bubbly Anastasia Steele (or should I say Mrs. Grey?), played by Dakota Johnson, had a nice little personality throughout the film. However, I think that because she is a comedian in real life, that quirky spirit showed through a little too much and didn’t quite fit in this character. Christian Grey, played by Jack Hyde, was just as controlling and chiseled as ever, which is cool, if you’re into stories with no character development. Marriage in reality is a beautiful and messy concept which is portrayed in dramatized truth throughout this dragging two hour long production. But the level to which domination, control, and unequal spousal rights were celebrated is somewhat inexcusable. Disobedience the way punishment is portrayed in this movie is something that quite utterly pissed me off. A man and wife need to respect one another and their boundaries, but subjecting control over your significant other is wrong. To punish your spouse in childish and unnecessary. This disrespects the embodiment of marriage, and for a film to portray control and abuse as otherwise is promoting an abusive culture where violence towards women in deemed as justifiable.
ALBUM REVIEW Vance Joy returns with yet another strong album in “Nation of Two.” The Australian singer-songwriter released his second studio album on Feb. 23, with sure-to-be hits that will rival those of his debut album, “Dream Your Life Away.”
by Justin Walker
“Nation of Two” features a mix of feel-good beats, from songs that are easy to dance along to, like “Saturday Sun,” to songs that emotionally grab you, such as “We’re Going Home.”
ARTIST: Vance Joy ALBUM: Nation of Two RELEASED: Feb. 23, 2018
The album itself tells the journey of two people in love. Joy explains the couple makes sense of life through their love for each other, a point that is driven home in the song “Lay It on Me.” The lyrics “Your love’s always finding me out” speaks to many couples who feel as if they weren’t complete until they found their significant other. Joy managed to turn a set of songs into chapters in a love story. Each one builds on the previous, adds emotional value and is beautifully written. “Nation of Two” is a must, especially for those still riding that Valentine’s Day high.

FIGHTIN’ TEXAS AGGIE BAND
AGGIE BAND
by Justin Walker
>
The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band is known as a distinguished collection of artists and performers, creating beauty through the form of musical sound. This spirited bunch honors Aggie tradition and shares school spirit through the most universal language of all, music!
On March 3, the Texas Aggie Band Association will hold a meeting and breakfast function. It is a little more of an intimate experience for past Band members to meet and greet one another, while all working together to plan a larger reunion happening later this year. The 2018 TABA Membership Meeting over the Aggie Band Reunion will be held Sat. March 3 at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse. The morning’s schedule of events and activities has already been planned out. The schedule will go as follows: breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. when the restaurant door open for the retired band members. BJ’s is providing a splendid breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, good ol’ bacon, scrumptious oatmeal, toast, assorted fruits and of course, fresh piping hot coffee. For those of you who are ready to rumble bright and early in the morning a cash
bar will be provided. Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s and any other weekend luxury your heart desires to get your weekend started off with a band. After breakfast at 8 a.m. the meeting will actually begin and plans over the Aggie Bands 125th Reunion will start being discussed and put in the works. BJ’s will be hosting this event completely free of charge, thanks to the hospitality of the restaurant and Jerry Deitchle ‘73. However, because the staff is volunteering their time early in the morning, we want to be sure to thank them for their gratuity. It’s always good to give back to the community when possible, pay the kindness forward. This event is free for former band members, but registration is required for attendance. For any extra questions about this event and getting involved with the group in general feel free to email taba@tabaonline.com. As well you can learn more about the event on corpsofcadets.org. Also, a list of registered attendees is also provided on the site so that you can make sure to connect with your old band besties.

ART
by Madison Caldwell
Leonardo Da Vinci: Machines in Motion
What do you know about Leonardo Da Vinci?
we Aggies can explore this wondrous exhibit in person.
Most know him best for his art, however, he had a very diverse list of interests, passions and successes that have helped shape our society. Leonardo Da Vinci is well celebrated as a master of a multitude of professions. He was known as a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, anatomist and engineer.
Da Vinci’s machines are grouped into four sections, based upon applications linked to the natural elements, which he has always held a strong affinity for. Da Vinci loved Mother Nature and the four elements associated with her: fire, water, earth and air. His machines all fall under categories such as water machines, machines to do with air, and so forth with both fire and the earth as well.
This coming month, the George Bush Library will open up a special interactive exhibit titled “Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion.” This hands-on interactive experience will be unlike any other brought to the Presidential Library.
This exhibit will feature over 30 machines that are all based off of Da Vinci’s original visionary designs. This feature is intended to help others get their creative wheels spinning both mentally and psychically.
This event is very unique, due to the fact that most of these machines are built fully life size and operational.
This exhibit will open up here soon, and will remain open from March 1, 2018 all the way to January 6, 2019. This hands on experience will be open to all ages during the establishment’s business hours of 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Each specific machine in the exhibit (and boy are there a lot) has been uniquely constructed from Leonardo’s preciously preserved notebooks. Highly qualified craftsmen and modern scientists created these wonders in the very heart of the Renaissance, Florence, Italy. They have been carefully shipped right here to College Station, so that

These materials were crafted by hand using all the tools prescribed by the master himself, and reinforced for this traveling exhibit. So come on out, and see these “Machines in Motion” for yourselves.

the
exclusive interview:
Texas A&M University produces graduates who are qualified to be successful in the field of their choice. The four years each student spends at Texas A&M are crucial to the development of their network and skills. Many local businesses, such as The PlatForum, are committed to improving the experience each Aggie has during and after college. We had the opportunity to talk to Britney Schielack, co-founder of local startup company The PlatForum, to discuss their vision for the BCS job market, their mission to make each student shine based on their own skills and the recognition their project recently received in Silicon Valley.
passionate about making sure everyone is working on what they are best at. The obstacle is that you don’t really know what that is half the time, especially when working with students. We are in real estate and property management, and we have been doing that for over a decade. I kind of bash it into our teams’ heads, and our hashtag is #KnowYourSmart. Your “smart” is being able to identify what you are skilled at and learning to monetize that. You are basically getting your highest return of investment from each team member because everyone is working on what they are most productive at.
MW: What is The PlatForum?
We started to see how this was working, and we wanted to find a way to scale and develop students at a higher level. That is when we decided to develop a product. We are not technology-minded people, so we dove into this and have THE PLATFORUM: been learning very quickly. We were Connecting entrepreneurs but Students with
BS: The Platform is a place that builds communities through the gigeconomy. Our immediate markets right now are students, entrepreneurs and startups. Our mission is to make Texas A&M and Blinn College students shine. It is designed to expose them to skills and passions way before they have actually gotten their degree, so that they understand what it’s like to apply that type of degree and apply that type of skill into the workforce. MW: It is definitely helpful for a student to prepare for the workforce as early as possible. How did the company come to be how it is today? BS: This is how we have operated our businesses for years. We are

LOCAL not technology gurus, so developing a software product was a whole new game. It started during the 2016 election season. That was another inspiration. I think that a lot of people were inspired to do things during that election season. We started to realize there are so many places, like LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter to network, but there wasn’t anywhere to come together to be productive. We watched all the complaining on social media, but where was the place that community members can come together and actually make a change? MW: Your website is targeted at both students and companies. What benefits do each of them gain from using The PlatForum? BS: For the student, it really goes back to what I said about gaining exposure and understanding what your skills are in the workforce, before you go spend thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes, getting a piece of paper. That was feedback we were getting from students who were coming to work for us. For example, they had started a major in agronomical engineering and spent two years working on it but really just wanted to get back to business management. The feedback we hear from companies comes from both ends. From a small business perspective, it allows you to outsource and scale quicker, and like I said, you are getting your highest return of investment because you are just hiring someone to do more of project-based work. The value larger companies that are involved see is being able to create projects and give them to potential applicants and see their work performance before they hire them. It also provides a competitive edge from the internship point of view. Some larger companies, especially in engineering, are really competitive about the students they want to go after at A&M. This helps them get in touch with those students at an earlier age, so instead of having them intern for a short time, they can potentially groom them and intern them for a longer time and build a relationship with them. MW: I’m sure that really helps companies find the right student for them, and allows for a more genuine and respected work relationship, since they have worked with that student throughout their college career. In terms of LinkedIn, which you mentioned earlier, I was wondering, how exactly is The PlatForum different from LinkedIn and other career and networking based social media sites? BS: We see how we could work cohesively with the way LinkedIn operates. The difference is in the core of our company and our mission, which is to learn to insource within your community and offer the opportunity to be productive on the same platform. LinkedIn was mainly a networking system, and it is a fantastic software. The event we last went to was sponsored by them, but the difference is we are very community-focused and task-focused. You are actually hiring someone for a project and paying them on the same platform. Companies can make the hire, rate performance and pay their employee all in the same place. We are creating a virtual résumé for our users. MW: You mentioned your community focus. How does the product serve College Station specifically?
BS: College Station is a unique place because of the University. Texas A&M alumni are a unique group, and they are very loyal to one another. I did not go to Texas A&M, but I have been working here for over a decade, and it is a beautiful thing. I can see how this community of local businesses really wants to assist the students in making their future as successful and beneficial as possible. MW: As a member of the student body at Texas A&M, it is exciting to hear of a local business that recognizes that and is working to assist in the relationship between Texas A&M and the rest of Bryan-College Station. You just got back from California where The PlatForum was selected to exhibit at the Startup Global in Silicon Valley. Tell me about that experience and what it entailed. BS: It was an experience! Silicon Valley is very different from College Station, and it is very different from Austin. It is a different type of atmosphere, a different type of bubble, so the exposure we gained there was fantastic. It proved to us that we are on the right track with our mission. Silicon valley offers opportunities to people in Silicon Valley that are unable to be exposed to the rest of the country. They have these events, but just imagine if there were things like this in places like College Station. There are small innovation hubs all over the country. It just proved that type of community atmosphere needs to be applied all throughout the country. We got a lot of interest from different people and investors. We learned that we want to be local and help our community. If they can’t find a job, we can help them promote their own business. MW: What a rewarding and humbling outcome from your trip. That is very exciting. What do you think is next for this company? BS: Short-term I would say we are going to be very vocal and easy to spot here in College Station. Our goal over the next few months is to make our student tenants shine. I will be meeting with organizations on campus to get them involved in The PlatForum and growing our student ambassador team. We want to see what we can do with the local incubators and local Aggie businesses. Long-term, we see ourselves scaling with universities nationally, but for now we want to make the students here shine. I really would like to dive into getting high school students on board to help them start thinking about their future early. The PlatForum is here to help each student succeed. This free system is beneficial for students of any age, no matter their career goals. Find the perfect company for you or test your entrepreneurial skills by starting a business of your own. DINNER
Dinner, Wine and Murder?: by Justin Walker Ides of March Murder Mystery Dinner at Messina Hof Everyone wants to be a detective. They can deny it, but the proof is in the TV Guide. For decades, television has seen mysteries and dramas centered on criminal justice. From “Murder, She Wrote” to “Criminal Minds,” and “Monk” to “CSI,” these shows have dominated airways. For most, it is the closest they will ever get to solving crime.
This year’s story is set in ancient Rome in the year 50 A.D., with the best by Tyler Lewis Roman athletes, chariot racers and gladiators as potential characters. A medal ceremony will take place to honor the winning athletes and surviving gladiators in addition to a lavish feast, which will be attended by the cream of the crop of Roman society.
But for some, figuring out “who done it” is as simple as pouring another glass of rosé.
Guests in attendance will receive a barbeque dinner and access to an open bar full of award-winning Texas wine. Between dinner and the entertainment, guests will have the ability to interact with each other to try to determine who the murderer is... or to throw suspicion upon someone else.
Messina Hof allows guests to wine and dine while enjoying a classic version of storytelling: murder mystery dinners. The next such event is taking place on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m. At most murder mystery dinners, guests are treated to professionals acting out the scenarios. However, Messina Hof puts its guests right into the performance, having attendees become the actors and storytellers. Before the dinner, each guest receives a character assignment, helping the guest plan their costume and act for the evening.
Tickets are on sale on the Messina Hof website, and can be found by searching for the “Ides of March Murder Mystery Dinner.” Admission costs $69.95 before tax and gratuity, but includes a 3-course meal and the open bar. Again, everyone wants to be a detective. So take your chance. Get all dressed up for a night of Ancient Roman sports, head on out to Messina Hof and answer the question people are dying to figure out: who done it?

Texas Independence Day Celebration They say that everything is bigger in Texas, but we don’t always take time to understand the rich history of the Lonestar State. Well, Washington on the Brazos, known as the place where Texas became Texas, will be hosting their annual Texas Independence Day Celebration on March 3 and 4. Texas Independence Day Celebration, presented by H-E-B and coordinated by the Washington on the Brazos State Park Association, is an annual two-day living history celebration which commemorates the day in 1836 when 59 delegates bravely met to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. After all, there is no better place to celebrate Texas’ independence than on the very spot “Where Texas Became Texas.” The free event features live music, food, traditional crafts, musket and cannon firings, the Texas A&M University Singing Cadets, the Kids History Zone, “The Birth of a Republic” (a historical play about the signers of the declaration), the Brenham Children’s Chorus and other commemorative programs. A new museum exhibit, titled “So Others Could Follow: Four Centuries of Maps That Define Texas,” will open that weekend and will illustrate
the evolution of Texas over four centuries, both geographically and politically. Historical reenactors set up a bonafide 1836 Texas Army camp, where visitors can wander freely to learn how the soldiers and their families lived. Admission fees are waived for the site’s permanent attractions (Independence Hall; Star of the Republic Museum and Barrington Living History Farm) for the weekend celebration. Located on 293 acres of lush park, the picturesque Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site is the core of the Republic of Texas Complex, which also includes Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site—a wonderfully preserved 19th century stagecoach inn located nearby in Anderson, TX. Additionally, you’ll find the nearby Six Flags over Texas Monument in Navasota, TX. A visit to this significant historic site is a must for all Texans and visitors alike! The Texas Independence Day Celebration will take place on March 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Washington, TX. Admission to the grounds, on-site shuttles and parking are free for the event. Emo MOnday at Logie’s Have you been yearning for the tracks that you grew up with? Songs from bands like Blink 182, Fall Out Boy and Death Cab for Cutie? You are in luck, because Logies on Campus will begin hosting “Emo Mondays” on the first Monday of each month. They are looking to fill a common void in the music and nightlife scene. There are always country nights, EDM nights, hip-hop nights, etc. However, there is seldom a night for fans of rock, punk and emo music to enjoy. This event is not an isolated idea but rather, a part of a movement. There has been an overall revival of late 1990s and early 2000s music. Bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Blink 182 are playing sold out shows across America. Spotify also has several curated playlists of nostalgic throwbacks. “Emo Nights” began in Los Angeles, and now are being held in Dallas, Atlanta, Nashville, New Orleans, Seattle and many other venues that have finally tapped into millennial nostalgia. They are even being held internationally in London and Toronto. “Mainstream music is great, but sometimes you really crave the music from back then. It is relatable in a way that today’s music isn’t. Especially when you aren’t feeling your best,” said Texas A&M student Sakshi Goel, who attended an “Emo Night” in Dallas last year. This long-awaited Renaissance is exciting to many people who do not see what they like in the current nightlife music choices. Emo music continues to live on and be an outlet for emotions that can be difficult to articulate. Nothing quite captures the feeling of being 14, angsty, and wanting someone to know. Logie’s on Campus will be hosting the event from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m., and the setlist will be curated by DJ Bear. They will be playing several throwback artists such as My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Cobra Starship, Simple Plan and many more. The next Emo Monday will be held March 5, so don’t forget to take a trip down memory lane.

THE LOCAL at LAKE WALK
The Local, an outdoor market formerly known as the Lake Walk Farmer’s Market, has transformed into the most unique weekly outing experience in Bryan-College Station. Located right off FM 2818 by the Stella Hotel, The Local is a weekly neighborhood artisan market which includes vendors, food trucks and music. Natalie Rosser, marketing coordinator for the market, helped The Local become what it is today. “We knew that the farmer’s market needed to grow and change, and we knew this would be a perfect time to brand it,” Rosser said. “We gave it its own name, put stricter guidelines on participating vendors and helped it blossom, so to speak.” In order to provide the best experience possible for each person who takes the time to check out The Local, products for sale must meet high expectations when it comes to quality. It is rare to see an event in this area that caters so flawlessly to a wide range of people, from young families to students and the retirement community. Bringing the community together each week to a family friendly, unique event requires a lot of work and planning, but this team has done just that. Rosser also let Maroon Weekly in on their focus and commitment to community and small business. “Instead of calling it a farmer’s market, it is now the Local because it isn’t just produce,” Rosser said. “We feel really passionate about the fact that we are able to give the area’s small business owners the opportunity to promote their products and who they are.” The Local updates the list of vendors attending each week online. Some vendors return every week, but new vendors are constantly joining in on the event with fresh ideas and products. Every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Local opens to the public, rain or shine. Similar to the luxurious quality of a big city marketplace, this up and coming area is a place you will want to check out and stay a while. Try it out, and maybe you will find your new favorite spot in BCS.

TELL YOUR STORY LEADERSHIP FORUM by Justin Walker
Everyone has challenges, and how we face them molds us into the people we are. Will you face your problem head on and fists up, ready to fight? Or will you run in fear of the unknown? What if you are fighting for your dream, your career or maybe your life? That is the case for many of the speakers at this year’s “Tell Your Story,” an event intended to help students recognize their own passions. The 2018 “Tell Your Story Leadership Forum” will feature guest speakers Joseph Sohm, Ann Marie Hauser and Elizabeth Ellis. Sohm began as a photographer around 40 years ago, in his late 20s. When he was not teaching American history, Sohm spent his time in a band. Wanting to combine his love for both in a visual representation, Sohm began projecting his photography at musical performances, garnering the attention of an art director. Hauser has served many communications related positions within government entities. She currently serves as the director of the Senate Republican Conference, overseeing communications strategies for Sen. John Thune, of South Dakota. Hauser also handles the development of messages for different politicians and helps Republican senators
communicate with the citizens of the United States, via multiple mediums and platforms. Ellis was born in East Prussia. Ellis’s father was drafted into Hitler’s army, and she was forced out of her home when the Red Army took control of East Prussia. Ellis managed to flee from violence, persecution and starvation to experience a long and prosperous life full of hope, faith and survival. Tell Your Story began in 2010, but the dream started earlier, when founder Paige Smiley-Robinson first attended a leadership conference her freshman year of college. Through various leadership opportunities during her college career, she recognized that cultivating a dream and chasing after it was essential for success, regardless of career goals. Upon hearing from many successful people who sought out their passions in life, Smiley-Robinson felt that future generations of Aggies needed to hear these stories as well, and thus the Tell Your Story Leadership Forum was born. The 2018 edition of “Tell Your Story” is taking place Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rudder Theatre. Tickets are on sale now online. We highly recommend you attend in order to listen to three amazing stories of people chasing their dreams and achieving success.
