MOVIE REVIEW: GAME NIGHT

by Ashali Chimata

MOVIE REVIEW

For competitive people such as myself, game nights are a chance to prove your worth. From trivia to Pictionary, only the strongest can survive. But what happens when a friendly game night turns not so friendly, and a simple murder mystery party turns deadly? “Game Night” follows Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams), husband, wife and game night extraordinaires. The duo is joined by close friends and married couple Kevin (Lamorne Morris) and Michelle (Kylie Bunbury), and Ryan (Billy Magnussen) and his newest date Sarah (Sharon Horgan) for their weekly game night. However, this time the evening is hosted by Max’s older brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler), who is in trouble for his actions within the black market. What was meant to be a fun evening of Scrabble and charades quickly turns into a manhunt, as Max and his friends attempt to save his brother’s life. The writers are the real MVPs in “Game Night.” From hilarious one liners to an incredibly funny series of events, the audience is laughing from start to finish. The entire cast delivered exception performances, making for great chemistry on screen and adding depth to the film. Production levels were out of this world, adding to the experience unfolding on the screen. This movie is by far one of the funniest you will see this year. While “Game Night” is rated R, it’s mostly for language, sexual references and some violence, all of which is used as comedic relief. I highly encourage you to head to the movie theater as soon as possible.

ALBUM REVIEW Raw vocals and painfully honest lyrics set Camp Cope above the rest. This all female rock trio has been around since 2015, and their second studio album “How to Socialise & Make Friends” is real and empowering. Camp Cope is a representative of the original #MeToo movement, and it has been speculated that this album could empower and inspire women to tell their stories, no matter the context or magnitude.

ARTIST: Camp Cope ALBUM: How to Socialise & Make Friends RELEASED: March 2, 2018

“How to Socialise & Make Friends” explores themes of loss, heartbreak, equality, sexual assault and personal discovery. The opening track, actually called “The Opener,” is about the injustices that lead singer Georgia “Maq” McDonald feels women experience each day, both in male-dominated fields and in relationships. McDonald is always real, but this track

is full of real-life experiences that are bound to hit home with many women. The third track, “The Face of God,” is a powerful song about the lonely aftermath of sexual assault. The victim struggles with believing what happened was her fault and that the man who assaulted her “didn’t seem like that kind of guy.” It’s a heart-wrenching story that is all too real to male and female victims all over the world. Every song on this album packs an emotional punch without over-dramatizing serious issues. Camp Cope is an exception to all the mindless lyrical content being released in this day and age. With one of the most unique voices in the scene, this is an unforgettable album for the band and for listeners.

Campus Bike Sharing at Texas A&M Imagine a process as simple as pulling out your phone, scanning a QR code, riding off on a bike you don’t actually own and getting to class on time. Texas A&M is working hard to improve their campus this semester seemingly more than ever. Construction forces students to change their routes to get around closed sidewalks and roads. Also, bus route changes have made it more of a hassle to navigate campus. Getting to class on time is crucial to a successful semester, so TAMU Transportation Services has come up with the perfect solution. TAMU has partnered with ofo, a Beijing-based bicycle sharing company, to bring bright yellow bikes to campus that can be used by students going to class or anyone on campus just visiting. Cities and campuses all over the country use a variety of bike sharing services that have proven to be convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly. As opposed to the previous bike

sharing service at TAMU, ofo offers more bikes and is as userfriendly as it gets. To use the bikes, simply download the ofo app. Each bike features a built in lock that can only be opened by scanning the QR code or entering the number on the bike within the application. After it is unlocked, you can use it for as long as you like. Once you are done with the bike, park it in any bike rack on campus and re-lock the bike to end your session. This bike sharing service costs $0.50 per hour, making it an affordable way to get around campus quickly. Longer term options are available including, bike usage for $9.95 a month or $34.95 a semester. If you choose to purchase the longer-term options, you are able to use ofo bikes as often as you like during the paid time period. This service has already began at TAMU, so save your money on buying a bike, avoid campus traffic and pick up an ofo bike instead.

Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts presents

HASAN MINHAJ

One of the things that makes living in the Bryan-College Station area so great are the notable speakers that come to Texas A&M’s campus each year, from all the living presidents to Mikhail Gorbachev, Condelezza Rice and Lady Gaga. This year is no different; The MSC L.T. Jordan Institute for International Awareness, in partnership with MSC OPAS, Muslim Students’ Association and International Student Association is hosting their program, “Made in America: An International Experience.”

Utah’s most established institution for contemporary dance

The event will feature famous comedian Hasan Minhaj, a senior correspondent for Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” He is also the star of his own Netflix special, “Homecoming King,” which highlights stories from Minhaj’s life as a first-generation Indian-American Muslim, and he was a speaker at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Minhaj effortlessly weaves political and social commentary with witty and relatable humor. Minhaj’s opening act will be popular comedian Azhar Usman, who is returning to Texas A&M after performing on campus in 2016. He has done comedy tours around the United States in the past, collaborated with comedian Dave Chappelle and performed at comedy festivals, including “Allah Made Me Funny.” His show in 2016 dispelled many preconceived notions about American muslims. Both performers often question stereotypes and misconceptions about immigration and Muslims and tell their story about growing up in America. This event is big for several communities on campus. “The purpose of our committee is to provide our campus and community with exposure to cultures and issues around the world, so with this program, we decided to focus on the experiences of Third Culture Kids, or people who were raised in a culture different from that of their parents,” said Janie Davis, Vice Chair of the MSC L.T. Jordan Institute. “Other Texas universities have large South Asian organizations on campus that regularly host events like this,” said Mihir Kulkarni, Texas A&M junior. “Hasan Minhaj has already performed at those universities. This is the first time there is an event like this on campus. He highlights experiences that are relatable for many students on campus.” Both comedians will also participate in a Q&A session with the audience. The program will take place on March 27 at 7 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium, but ticket are on sale at the MSC Box Office, or online at boxoffice.tamu.edu.

TV SHOW REVIEW: FLINT TOWN NETFLIX

UNBOUND BENEFIT at PALACE THEATER The complex and terrifying issue of human trafficking is the focus of UnBound. This nonprofit organization is combating the issue by activating communities to fight human trafficking. According to their Facebook page, “there are over 30 million slaves in the world today.” UnBound believes they can make a difference, and they believe the Bryan and College Station communities can help. Unfortunately, BCS is a prime target for trafficking because it is right in the middle of the most heavily trafficked route in Texas. UnBound focuses on preventing trafficking by raising awareness, conducting professional trainings and facilitating survivor advocacy. This is an important cause that affects us all, and you can help by attending the UnBound Benefit Concert with Zach Winters and Jason Barrows this month at the Palace Theater. Tickets are being sold through Antioch Community Church, and all proceeds go directly to UnBound College Station’s efforts to combat slavery and ignite hope in communities across the country. Zach Winters, a folk-pop artist, travels across the country with his family to play music. Winters is known for putting on concerts benefiting different causes and people groups, including Syrian refugees and laboring mothers and orphans in Mexico. Paste Magazine calls Winters’ songs “perfect for a hushed afternoon in the season that bears his name.” Jason Barrows, who just released his debut album, plays Christian/gospel music that enlightens listeners and speaks of redemption through stunning lyrics and 80s new wave guitars. Both artists are bound to please all who attend with their varying styles and passionate musical styles. The Palace Theater, located in Downtown Bryan, is a staple music venue in the area. The large stage and outdoor seating is unlike any other venues in the area. The UnBound Benefit Concert will take place March 25th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Palace Theater. Tickets can be purchased at www.antiochs.org/concert for $30 each. This is an all ages event that will support survivors of human trafficking and prevent future damage in the Brazos Valley.

Flint, Michigan is a city you probably wouldn’t vacation in, although the name has become widely recognized since the 2014 water contamination crisis. Flint is a city which ranks among the most violent places in America based on FBI data. The once robust middle class city was an example of “the American Dream.” However, it has eroded into a city plagued by civil unrest, crime, and poverty. A new Netflix docuseries, “Flint Town,” is showing the daily challenges of Flint citizens and police officers, exploring race and class issues, and taking an in-depth look at tensions between a police force and the community. This series being filmed on the heels of the 2016 election and a changing political climate makes the show even more insightful. Directors and cinematographers Zackary Canepari, Jessica Dimmock, and Drea Cooper spent a year embedded within the police department of Flint. The city is struggling after repeated blows; General Motors, the largest employer, closed down and relocated. Up next, the water crisis exposed over 100,000 residents to lead poisoning. There are less than 100 officers serving 100,000 citizens. One of the officers featured in the show, Brian Willingham, wrote a New York Times article with a revealing title. It simply asked “How can citizens in Flint trust the police to protect them when they can’t even trust their government to provide them with clean water?” The filmmakers do not sugarcoat the realities facing Flint. The “us versus them” attitude and racial tensions are ongoing debates, not only in every city’s local community but also nationally. The show does an amazing job of tackling these sensitive issues through the lens of the Flint community. Additionally, the show features beautiful photography and cinematography all over the city. Although Netflix skipped the fanfare for this release, it is a profoundly immersive show that is a must-watch.

CRAIG MARSHALL

IN THE DRIVE THRU! Bring this ad in to redeem this incredible offer.

at The George

College Station will once again host a quality musician as Craig Marshall comes to town to play at The George on Saturday, March 24. Marshall, a singer/songwriter out of Austin, has been performing and releasing albums since the early 2000’s. He serves as the lead vocalist for the band, as well as playing the guitar and writing the songs. He is joined by Patterson Barrett on the electric, steel and baritone guitars and the mandolin, Bob Hoffnar on the steel guitar, Michael St. Clair on the bass, Mark Henne on drums, Rich Baur with percussion and Betty Soo adding harmony vocals. After releasing four albums in the early 2000’s, Marshall and his band took some time away from creating music. But they returned in 2013 with the release of “Hiding in the Doorway.” 2015 saw a second album, “After All,” under their new producer Robert Harrison, leader of the band Cotton Mather. Marshall has a pleasant and comforting vibe to him. From the moment he begins to sing, a bond is formed between Marshall and the audience, and it feels as if you are listening to a close friend around a campfire. His songwriting is heartfelt and timeless, which is a result of crafting songs for more than 30 years. The impression from the songs and the band’s performances rival that of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, but sometimes stretch over to Tom Petty or the Beatles. If the band doesn’t get you going (but we sure they will), the venue is bound to excite you. The George, located across from the Texas A&M University campus in the Century Square development, is a luxury hotel that offers many amenities for the locals to enjoy. From a craft cocktail bar to its 5,000 square foot ballroom connecting to the main plaza, the atmosphere at The George is one to experience. The modern, abstract aesthetic and art is matched with the classic southern hospitality Texas A&M and Bryan/College Station is known for. We highly encourage everyone to head out to The George on Saturday, March 24, for what will be a great night of entertainment. Marshall will take the stage at 8 p.m., but get there early to soak up the culture of the venue!

With lips of an angel and a voice like a bird, country belle Leslie Tom will be soulfully singing her heart out for all of Aggieland to hear later this March.

However, don’t fret if you have to miss this specific event, live music plays at Calvary Court every week from Thursday to Sunday. Over the weekend the bar stays open just as late as all those Northgate pubs and clubs. Drink and dance until 2 a.m., and, when that’s all said and done, grab yourself some snacks at Calvary Court’s upcoming food trailer.

Tom has been known to win the hearts of country music lovers everywhere, and she has been compared to the likes of Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. Her style is sassy and sweet, with a ton of southern charm.

Coming (extremely) soon this food truck will offer a quick bite to eat, at any and all times of the day (and night).

Her performance will be located at Calvary Court, a brand spanking new hotel filled with all of the amenities (and more) that one could need. Swim

The Big Event:

Say Thank you to aggieland by Madison Caldwell

The Big Event is a well-known, loved and cherished community service act that tens of thousands of Texas A&M students participate in each Spring semester. Each year, over 22,000 motivated Aggie students, faculty and staff unite to serve the Bryan-College Station community. Beginning in 1982, this one-day student-run service project is the largest of its kind throughout the entire nation. Talk about school spirit, Whoop! As a recognized student organization and proud member of the Student Government Association at Texas A&M, this years 36th Annual Big Event will take place on March 24, 2018 . The message and overall mission of this “Big Event” has continuously stayed the same over the past couple of decades. The motto is so simple that you’ll almost not believe how big of an impact two seemingly powerless words have had the influence to make. Our goal for this day is to just spread our appreciation and say, “thank you” to the outlying community and residents who do so much to support us students (and our rowdy school spirit). All local resident requests this upcoming event have already been taken into account, as the waitlist for this 2018 year has even been filled to the brim. Obviously, both the residents and community businesses love

and appreciate the efforts they are being offered on this special day. Last year alone, over 2,400 residents were helped. So far there are 125 Big Events taking place across the country, and since 1982 over 877,048 total community service hours have been served and given. Students participate in this annual event in order to share and spread their appreciation for the community with which they live, thrive and attend school. Our futures are made possible through the generosity others have shown us and our school, so The Big Event is our way of giving back and making sure everyone knows how thankful we really are. Whether doing yard work, car or window washing, painting or even some custodial labor, anything that we can do to give back to those that have given so much to us already. The Big Event is based off of some of the core values that all Aggies are known to honor and uphold: unity through service. This event’s extensive and emotional impact is not based off of the number of jobs completed by Aggie students within the specified day each year. Instead, this day is about the positive, inspiring and generous interactions these students have with their community neighboring residents.
