MOVIE REVIEW: RED SPARROW MOVIE REVIEW

by Ashali Chimata

Spy thriller “Red Sparrow” was released earlier this month with a less than impressive performance in the box offices. Director Francis Lawrence, who also directed “The Hunger Games” movies, cast Jennifer Lawrence to play Dominika Egorova, a sexy Russian ballerina turned spy. Lawrence’s character begins the movie as a ballerina struggling with a careerending injury and an ill mother. She is convinced by her uncle to work for Russian intelligence as a sparrow, or a spy that uses the tools of seduction, and she is eventually tasked with getting close to American CIA operative Nate Nash, played by Joel Edgerton. The film seemingly has all the ingredients for the perfect sexy spy thriller. However, it relies heavily on graphic violence, gratuitous sex scenes and dated Cold War-esque Russian stereotypes. While the screenplay is based on a novel written by former CIA officer Jason Matthews, the plot seems out of touch with the present-day reality. With today’s news of cyber-security attacks and Vladimir Putin’s government, this film feels like it was set in the 1960s. Additionally, it perpetuated generalizations about Russian people that are antiquated. I was very excited to see the movie, because it seemed to be an empowering thriller about a female spy, like the 2010 film “Salt.” However, the film was more about the shock value of the gory atrocities Lawrence’s character is forced to endure, rather than the character herself. The film got mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike. Rotten Tomatoes rated it 47%, while IMDB gave it a 6.8 out of 10. The plot felt overall formulaic, however, if you are looking for a thriller with a few twists at the end, it is a decent movie.

ALBUM REVIEW The British bombshell George Ezra is back with another album that is sure to entertain fans.

by Justin Walker

“Staying at Tamara’s” is Ezra’s second studio album, and it’s his first since his debut album, “Wanted on Voyage,” dropped in 2014. There are big shoes to fill after his initial success, but Ezra has flexed his talents yet again.

ARTIST: George Ezra ALBUM: Staying at Tamara’s RELEASED: March 23, 2018

The first single off the new album, “Don’t Matter Now,” offers a reassuring message to listeners through a vibrant and addicting sound. The music feels like Ezra, relaxed and confident. “Paradise,” the album’s second single, is definitive of Ezra’s sound to date, with low, growling vocals

followed by high notes that show off his range and control. The beat is something any listener can groove to, whether that be at a concert or on the car ride home. His latest single, “Hold My Girl,” slows down in tempo and showcases his voice in a way previous songs have not. Ezra captivates listeners with a modern day love song. They lyrics are the highlight here, complimented by Ezra’s vocal control and power. “Staying at Tamara’s” dropped March 23, so be sure to check out the rest of the album on Spotify, iTunes or the platform of your choice. If you were impressed with Ezra’s early works, you will not be disappointed.

GLOW IN THE DARK EGG HUNT

by Justin Walker

> EASTER EGG HUNT Every year, kids all across the country stumble through fields searching. They check under rocks, up trees and in bushes, all for the pursuit of an Easter egg. Inside, wonders. It could be candy. Maybe even a toy. In some cases, maybe even cold, hard cash. Yes, kids get all the fun around this time of year. But the City of College Station wants to extend the fun in 2018. College Station will be hosting a glow-in-the-dark egg hunt on Friday, March 30, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Wolf Pen Creek Park. Guests can enjoy a variety of attractions at the event, from a selfie booth to joy jumps, as well as numerous lawn games. Guests will be allowed to bring refreshments and coolers no larger than 48 quarts, but alcohol, glass containers and pets are prohibited from the event. The egg hunt begins at 9 p.m., but there will be plenty to do before then, so go early and enjoy the opportunity to be a kid again. Speaking of kids, College Station did not forget about them. Join the city

earlier in the day for the annual Easter egg hunt from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Recreation Center. The Easter Bunny will be in attendance, and kids will have the opportunity to take pictures with him. Take the children on a ride on Paw Paw’s Party Train or take part in craft projects that will surely entertain the kids. The kids’ egg hunt is restricted to children ages 10 and under. Guests are encouraged to park in the Wayne Smith Baseball Field parking lot at 107 Holleman Drive. A shuttle service will begin one hour before the event and will conclude one hour after the event ends. Interested in helping out? The City of College Station is looking for volunteers to help with both events. Sign-ups for the glow-in-the-dark event include event set up from 5 to 7 p.m., during event activities from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and during event activities and clean up from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The annual Easter egg hunt is looking for interested volunteers to help run the craft projects, which include face painting, a tattoo station and a coloring station, just to name a few. So grab your kids or grab your friends and find those eggs. Those prizes are waiting. Happy hunting!

OFF FLAVORS: A BEER SENSORY EVENT Beer. It’s a pretty popular item in the Bryan/College Station area. It’s a hot commodity at pretty much every business on Northgate and can be found at a number of restaurants across town. But how much does the average consumer truly know about beer? That’s where a local organization is stepping in. The Bryan/College Station chapter of Girls Pint Out, a national craft beer organization for women, is sponsoring Off Flavors, a beer sensory event designed to educate people on the beverage. Off Flavors will take place at Brew Supply Haus in College Station on Tuesday, April 3. The event starts at 7 p.m. and will likely run until 10 p.m. Attendees of the event will learn the proper procedures for tasting beer, as well as what “off” flavors consist of and how they get there. Once they cover those topics, those in attendance will get to try them for themselves. Off Flavors will be sure to expand one’s tasting vocabulary and help those who brew at home to elevate their craft. The event is for ladies only (sorry fellas, I’m sure the Chicken will be open). Participants must be 21 years of age and have a valid form of

government-issued identification. Originating in 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Girls Pint Out has quickly grown to consist of more than 90 chapters in 40 states and Washington, D.C. The group serves as a place of discussion, education and fun. While most events are girls only, such as Off Flavors, men are sometimes invited to the party. Brew Supply Haus serves as a one-stop shop for beer in College Station. Learn how to make beer, wine, mead, cider and more, or get all the equipment and supplies for home brewing, fermenting, grilling and chilling. Similar to Off Flavors, Brew Supply Haus hosts several classes and demonstrations year round. Tickets for Off Flavors can be purchased at the event’s Eventbrite link, which can be found on Off Flavors’ Facebook page. The cost of the event is $15 and no refund is available. So if you are a female in the Bryan/College Station interested in learning more about beer, we highly suggest you attend. Tickets are on sale until April 3 or until sold out.

Texas A&M University has produced several generations of successful Aggies in various disciplines, and these notable alumni all have stories behind their careers. Rusty Burson, author and current Director of Membership and Communications at Miramount Country Club, set out to tell the stories of 12 Aggie entrepreneurs and highlight the common thread between them in his book “The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Aggieland.” Burson attended Sam Houston State University, but Texas A&M has always held a special place in his heart. After beginning his career in journalism at newspapers in Galveston and Forth Worth, he wrote for numerous business publications in the Dallas/Forth Worth area. He went on to spend 16 years as an associate editor of the “12th Man Magazine.” In 2004, Burson wrote his first book of a 22 book series about Reveille. “I wanted to connect students with the inspiring entrepreneurs I met through the 12th Man Foundation,” Burson said, as he explained his motivation to write “The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Aggieland.”

Burson learned about Startup Aggieland, a business accelerator and job creation program organized by the McFerrin Center For Entrepreneurship at Mays Business School. The program helps neophyte entrepreneurs break into the business with mentorship, pro bono legal services, rentfree office spaces, and many other services. “After reading about Startup Aggieland, I decided to find 12 entrepreneurs and learn about their careers, obstacles, advice, and stories.” Burson stated. The book features 12 former students with successful businesses, some of which had very humble beginnings. Fadi Kalaouze, a student living out of his van, began what is

Terrence Murphy, a football player who sustained a significant neck injury, went on to find success in residential real estate. Larry Hodges opened a copying and printing shop near the A&M campus and stood firm when industry giant Kinko’s Graphics Corporation filed a civil suit against him. Michelle Lilie broke stereotypes by working in typically male-dominated industries such as the oil field and housing authorities. Neal Adams survived personal bankruptcy because of his law firm’s real estate ventures and rebuilt the firm by shifting his focus to education. These are just a few of the phenomenal stories inside Burson’s book. When asked what he found to be the overarching theme between all these Aggies’ stories, Burson replied that “they prepared for dealing with adversity, which is key if you want to be successful. Grit and resilience were a component of each person’s story.” The best aspect of “The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Aggieland” is that all the proceeds go to supporting Startup Aggieland, which is located near Research Park. This roadmap to career success is filled with invaluable advice for students. To learn more about Rusty Burson or to purchase the book please visit, http://entspirit.com/

DEANNA WHEELER

Utah’s most established institution for contemporary dance

Everyone has a story, but what you do it is what matters. Some people write biographies of their life and some create subjective paintings of their troubled upbringing. Well, singer/songwriter Deanna Wheeler turned her pain into music and travels the state of Texas telling stories of her life through song. Often described as a Texas Tornado, Wheeler is Florida born and California raised with a fiery personality. Both on and off stage, she masters the classic sounds of country icons like Reba and Martina McBride, the smoky voice of Stevie Nicks, and the fierce contemporary pop/country sound. Wheeler’s personal and brash lyrics come straight from her soul. They weave together stories of heartache, hard-living and hopeless romanticism. Her songs take audiences on a journey between leather and lace, wild weather and grace. Deanna demands the listeners’ attention, armed with a powerhouse voice and brutally honest lyrics about her movie-scripted dramatic past. Before making her musical dreams come true, Wheeler was an active member of the United States Air Force. She has experience many tests and trials throughout her personal life as a mother, wife and veteran, all of which transcend into her music. Deanna has a fight-or-flight attitude and showcases a musical revival of song, dance, motherhood and romance for all. Some of her biggest hits include her 2017 singles “Never Be the Same,” “I Can Lie,” and “Anywhere From Here” from CMT’s American drama, Nashville. Wheeler is a Texas force to be reckoned with that kicks butt and takes names. She is currently on tour and will playing a show in the Bryan-College Station area on March 31, at Cavalry Court. Located in the heart of Century Square, Cavalry Court incorporates the rich Texas A&M traditions of heritage and hard work. TV SHOW REVIEW: DARK NETFLIX GERMAN

THE MOUNTAINTOP at RUDDER THEATER History plays a major role in our everyday lives, whether it is being repeated or recreated. There are several historical events and leaders that have left a distinct impact on our culture . For example, you have the horrific events of the the Holocaust and the assassination of John F. Kennedy or the women’s suffrage and the Civil Rights Movements. Well, playwright Katori Hall has brought one of the most important American historical events and leaders back to life in her play “The Mountaintop.” “The Mountaintop” will be performed at Rudder Theater on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death. On the evening of April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside room 306 of The Lorraine Motel in Memphis. What happened inside room 306 the night before the killing remains a mystery. In her internationally acclaimed play, Hall imagines what may have transpired in the hours between the legendary civil rights leader and a seemingly inconsequential hotel maid. After delivering his famous “I’ve been to the mountaintop” speech on behalf of the sanitation workers in Memphis, Dr. King goes to the Lorraine Motel to rest before another long day of campaigning. His world is changed when he meets Camae, a beautiful maid, who delivers his room service. When Camae reveals that she is an angel that has come to prepare him for the coming afterlife, Dr. King must confront his fears and face his own mortality. Hours after his famed final speech, the celebrated Reverend reveals his hopes, regrets and fears, creating a masterful bridge between mortality and immortality. The Mountaintop shows the audience a different side of Martin Luther King: a man who is tired, flawed, yet -despite everything - is an inspiration. “The Mountaintop” will be in Texas A&M University’s Rudder Theatre on April 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. For more information, contact the MSC Box Office by email tickets@masc. tamu.edu or phone 979-845-1234.

Tired of the same old “American Dream” tv-series that depicts life as comedic and a little more glamorous than it actually is? Getting bored of your channel queue and looking for something new to watch? Or are you just tired of waiting for the new season of “Stranger Things” to come out? Well my friends, whatever your troubles may be, Germany has created quite the brain teaser for all of your viewing needs. “Dark” is a crime drama and mystery thriller with a sci-fi twist. This unique German show debuted in late December 2017. However, here in the States, it has rapidly started to grow in popularity. This is the first German series to be streamed internationally. The show is much like its foreboding one-word title. However, this isn’t just your everyday abducted children doom and gloom story. Two children disappear, as if through thin air. Four families are shaken, forced to investigate and deal with these shocking changes. A huge mystery that no one can seem to solve. If you can get past the part where the actors’ lip movements don’t perfectly line up with the English translated version (shout out to you type-A people), this series really is a hit. This inquisitive storyline really engages the audience by drawing them in and messing with social perceptions regarding time traveling, interpersonal connections and the unknown. “Dark” is a family saga thriller with a supernatural twist. There are 10 hour long episodes, with each one raising more questions and curiosity. Follow four families as the disappearance of two children threatens to expose and break them all. The whole town is twisted into these mysterious disappearances and the secrets that surround them. Each episode will make you think harder than the one before. Have fun going down the wormhole. So far, this series only has this one seat-grabbing initial season. However, due to its popularity both here and in its homeland over in Europe, the show is likely soon to unravel soon as the season has been renewed for another year.
