MOVIE REVIEW: LOVE, SIMON MOVIE REVIEW

by Justin Walker

The romantic comedy, or rom com, genre is an extremely popular type of film that consists of a love story told in light-hearted and amusing fashion. Often these movies consist of a guy and a girl falling in love while major catastrophes occur in their lives, disrupting the relationship in a humorous way. With a few exceptions, it usually works out in the end. But while rom coms are very trendy, there are few widely known rom coms that focus on same-sex couples. “Love, Simon” follows Simon on his journey of coming out, if you can call it coming out, while also falling for a fellow high school student he has never met. In fact, Simon does not even know his true identity. While online one afternoon, Simon spots an anonymous post from a person claiming to be a student as Simon’s high school. The poster, Blue, claims to be gay, but cannot come out in public. Simon emails Blue under his own code name, and the two bond over their situations, until Simon is discovered and blackmailed. This leads to further complications for both Simon and Blue as Simon’s entire world crashes around him. “Love, Simon” is a truly special movie. Not only does it represent a community that is often underrepresented in this genre, but it is also a beautifully told story. The writing and production is beautifully done. Nick Robinson, who plays Simon, sells his performance, and audiences can feel the emotions of the title character. The Greg Berlanti-directed film didn’t shy away from difficult situations, and they were handled perfectly. I highly recommend watching “Love, Simon.” It’s an entertaining film that can offer a little perspective, which never hurts.

ALBUM REVIEW Jack White: a jack of all trades some would say. Over the years, the world has seen and heard many different sides from this rocker.

by Madison Caldwell

“Boarding House Reach,” the third solo album by Mr. White was released on March 23, 2018. The album was produced by his own successful label Third Man, as well as Columbia and XL Recording. A limited edition vinyl version of the album has been made available to customers of the Third Man Records Vault Service. The exclusive package features strikingly different cover art, a light-up vinyl record, special colored vinyl singles of demos along with all-access photographs taken during the intense recording sessions of the album.

ARTIST: Jack White ALBUM: Boarding House Reach RELEASED: March 23, 2018

There are many different sounds on this album, from gospel choirs to bongos, synthesizers and even organs. I can quite honestly say that these tracks took my ears by surprise, as they definitely weren’t what I was expecting. Even White himself commented in the making of his newest album that it was a “bizarre” record indeed. Some of the tracks have

been released prior to the rest of the album in hopes to draw attention and gain excitement for the album. “Connected Love” was the first song, released on January 10. “Over and Over and Over” was released March 1, and was originally written for the White Stripes back in 2005. If you are looking for some reminiscent White Stripes-like jams, then keep looking elsewhere. After the White Stripes split up, Jack White has become even more unique in both appearance and thought. He has even been compared to the likes of some of Johnny Depp’s more peculiar television characters. This album sounded somewhat devoid of excitement, with only a few of White’s riveting guitar solos thrown in the mix. All in all, this album may be a total hit for all you die-hard Jack White fans, but it was a little too all over the place and random for my liking. I felt somewhat unimpressed, listening to what sounded like any other experimental rock band performance at an outdoor music festival. I guess I just expected more. Better luck next time Mr. White.

LAURA PASKET AT FIRST FRIDAY

by Tyler Lewis

LAURA PASKET

The arts are all around us. We find ourselves are constantly listening to music, watching movies or doodling whatever comes to mind. Many people find that they enjoy spending their free time browsing through record shops and going to art museums. Well for all of you aspiring photographers or photography lovers, “First Friday with Laura Pasket” is quickly approaching. SEAD Gallery and Bookshop is hosting Texas photographer Laura Pasket during April’s “First Friday.” Getting her start with her father’s old film cameras, Pasket is a self-taught photographer who devotes her free time to capturing wildlife, landscape and more. She travels throughout both Texas and Illinois, photographing wildlife as a hobby. She always aims to photograph subjects in their own habitats, without disturbing their natural behaviors and practices. Pasket was born and raised in Rock Island, Illinois and now resides in the small town of Anderson, Texas. Pasket’s childhood vacations to National Parks like Yellowstone National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park and many others inspired her appreciation and love of nature and photography.

Pasket’s mission is to go beyond the knowledge of exposure, pixels, and technology. She aims to simply find the beauty in nature and wildlife. Pasket’s photos have been published in Birdwatching Magazine, and she currently has pieces hanging up at the Navasota City Hall building. Her memberships include the Texas Professional Photographers Association, North American Nature Photography Association, National Audubon Society, Brazos Audubon Society. Pasket also currently holds the position of Secretary/ Treasurer for the Brazos Valley Photo Club. The SEAD Gallery is located in the Federal Building at 216 W. 26th Street in Historic Downtown Bryan, Texas. The SEAD Gallery provides a unique downtown venue for arts and cultural exchange. CHILIFEST 2018

BY Madison Caldwell

Get ready to rumble, stumble and rock this weekend. The annual Chilifest is back and better than ever, with great new performers and artists ready to rage the socks off of Snook, Texas once again. Chilifest is a widely known music festival here in College Station because our beloved college students always whoop, holler and rave about it. This year’s line-up is one of the best yet. The festival is bringing the Turnpike Troubadours to town on Friday and Chris Young on Saturday. Attendees will also be able to see Koe Wetzel, Shotgun Rider, Bri Bagwell and Mason Kleman on Friday and Ryan Bingham, Josh Abbott Band, Casey Donahew and Parker McCollum on Saturday. Chilifest draws in around over 35,000 people over the two fun-filled days each year. Although it might seem like the main purpose of Chilifest might is to have fun and jam out to country and rock bands, the real purpose is a lot more fulfilling. As stated on the Chilifest Official Website, the event’s “main purpose

is to give back to local charities throughout the Brazos Valley and its surroundings areas while providing a unique festival experience to attendees.” The festival formed Chilifest Incorporated, a registered nonprofit, in 1999, and the charity grew from there. In the last 18 years, Chilifest Inc. has raised over $3,000,000 for charities across the Brazos Valley. Recipients of this support include Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Brazos Valley Children’s Museum, Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley, Voices For Children, Kiwanis Club of College Station, Bryan Protection Firemen and many others. 2016 was a landmark year for Chilifest Inc., as they raised over $225,000. That’s some fun you can feel good about. Chilifest is open to all ages, but families and the younger crowd should be aware that Chilifest is an excuse to get rowdy for many attendees. For more information about the festival, camping guidelines and ticket prices, visit http://www.chilifest.org/

CHRIS YOUNG HEADLINES CHILIFEST 2018 Chilifest 2018 is quickly approaching, and the lineup is sure to turn some heads.

In fact, Young is still seeing a lot of success from his first number one album, “I’m Comin’ Over.” It debuted in the top spot on the charts, contained a multi-platinum single and received several accolades from the industry.

With performances by Koe Wetzel, Bri Bagwell, the Josh Abbott Band and Casey Donahew, it’s going to be a great The album produced major hits, including two collaborations that rocked the country music world. “I’m weekend in Snook, Texas. But the headliner for the second night of this year’s festivities is none other than Chris Young. The Tennessee native will take the stage on Saturday, April 7, and he is looking forward to event. “A few of friends who have played there before have told me, ‘Get ready,’” Young said. Young said those friends told him how amazing the crowd could get at Chilifest, and he’s ready to feed off that energy to give them a great show. The trip to the Brazos Valley is coming in the middle of another successful year for Young. His most recent album, “Losing Sleep,” reached number one on the country charts, the second such honor for Young.

Comin’ Over,” “Think of You” with Cassadee Pope, and “Sober Saturday Night” with Vince Gill all reached the top of the charts, with the first two earning platinum or multiplatinum status. Overall, Young has racked up 10 number one singles and earned nominations from the Academy of Country Music, Billboard Music

MUSIC Awards, Country Music Association, and The Recording Academy. Young said having achieving all of this at this stage was amazing, as it is something you can only dream about when entering the business. “It’s huge to have this success,” Young said. “I’ve never wanted to do anything else.” Entering his twelfth year on tour, Young said he is still crossing off arenas and festivals from his bucket list. “I’m really excited to play Bridgestone Arena in September,” Young said. The venue in Nashville can seat up to 20,000 people for concerts and has hosted both the CMA Awards and the CMT Music Awards. Playing at Chilifest will be another bucket list item for Young, who described the festival as a show with its own identity. Chilifest is always a great time, but with Chris Young joining the line-up, this year is going to be one for the books! If you don’t already have your tickets, we highly suggest you find some and head on out to Snook!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:

Chilifest 2018 is quickly approaching, and this year’s lineup is one of the best yet, with the Turnpike Troubadours are returning to headline this year. As a well-known country group, the Turnpike Troubadours are no strangers to College Station. We caught up with one of the band members, R.C. Edwards, to talk about all things Chilifest 2018.

MW: The Turnpike Troubadours are well-known and beloved across Bryan and College Station. Chilifest 2016 was the last time you appeared at the festival, and Texas A&M students couldn’t have been more pleased with the performance. With all of the excitement surrounding the festival, what is the experience like for artists?

R.C. EDWARDS OF TURNPIKE TROUBADOURS

R.C.: It’s definitely excitement. Sometimes you do these shows, and you don’t know what to expect. In that case you definitely can be anxious, but having done it before and having a blast there makes us look forward to it. I’m kind of thinking, “Oh Chilifest, yeah, that one is awesome.” I’m glad you chose to go back to it. MW: Past experience definitely takes away all the nerves in situations like this. Can you recall any fun stories or memories from previous experiences at Chilifest? CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

by Abby Newton

R.C.: I believe we’ve played a couple times, but 2016 was the last year we attended. It was so crazy. There was an overwhelmingly wild and enthusiastic crowd, from what I remember. One year we played with Hank Williams Jr., which was pretty surreal itself, but it is a sea of people at Chilifest. It is one of the cooler festivals we have played. MW: Fans definitely go all out at Chilifest! Students wait for it all year, which creates a high-energy environment. It is even better to know that artists feel the same way. What is it like leading up to Chilifest since you already know what to expect? Are there any nerves?

LA BODEGA is back! BACK WITH OLD FAVORITES AND NEW SOON TO BE LEGENDS

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11

R.C.: Last time, I remember we had to leave. We ended up playing earlier than we were supposed to and then left immediately, so Evan could get back in time for his sister’s wedding. I think he ended up flying out of there, so we really didn’t get to hang out like we would have wanted to. That is what we are looking forward to most, getting to stick around and hang out at the festival more. MW: I’m glad you’ll get a chance to experience more of the festival this year. Having played it before, you guys deserve to enjoy the weekend too. And I assume you will get to play newer material this year, so let’s talk about that. Turnpike Troubadours released a brand new album, “A Long Way From Your Heart” in October of 2017. I’m sure many fans have already checked out the album, but, in your opinion, are there any notable differences compared to previous releases? R.C.: As far as what was new or different, Hank Early joined the band since then. He is our newest member, so that would be the biggest change. We added him on to accordion and in the harmonies, so it was great making a record with Hank and the full band. He added a lot to the band and sound. Also, we used a new producer for the first time. Ryan Hewitt was our producer for this release, and he really brought a lot to the table. MW: Fans can expect a new, redefined sound on “A Long Way From Your Heart” that stays true to the roots of Turnpike Troubadours. For those who aren’t familiar with the band and your music, what do you think is unique about Turnpike Troubadours? What do you hope fans get out of your music and performances? R.C.: We really try to focus on our live show. I always tell people, if you’ve never heard our music before, come see us live. We put on a hell of a show that is high-energy. Come see Turnpike Troubadours live, and we promise to keep it exciting. MW: That is a common opinion about your band. From someone who has witnessed these live performances multiple times, there are few others who measure up to that level of energy onstage. Like I mentioned earlier, Texas A&M students look forward to Chilifest year round. Campus is buzzing as everyone prepares for the fun-filled weekend spent with their friend surrounded by live music. Is there anything you can let us in on about your set at Chilifest this year? What can fans expect and get excited for? R.C.: A good portion of the show will be from the new record. That is probably what is new and different in our show since the last time we were in College Station. We haven’t played our new music in College Station, so a lot of the show will be songs people probably haven’t heard live yet. That is about as much as I know about what to expect. As far as specific songs, we haven’t made the setlist yet. The Turnpike Troubadours are scheduled to perform at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 6. You can purchase general admission tickets up to the day of Chilifest. A one-day general admission pass is $55, and a two-day general admission pass is $80. “Get ready to have a good time,” Edwards said. “We’ll see you at Chilifest.”

AMAZING GRACE at RUDDER THEATER Musicals offer theatre goers a time to sit back, have fun and forget reality for about two and a half hours. Historical plays like “The Mountaintop,” which follows the final days of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and “Hamilton,” the insanely popular Broadway musical that follows the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, are making their way into the spotlight. Well for you historical theatre lovers, the new musical “Amazing Grace” will be in town before you know it. Presented by Texas A&M University’s MSC OPAS, the new musical is inspired by the true story behind the song “Amazing Grace.” It details the story of John Newton, a former slave ship captain who later joined the abolition movement. Newton, a musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father – a slave trader – or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart. Accompanied by his slave, John embarks on a journey and soon finds himself in his darkest hour. Brimming with emotion and adventure, “Amazing Grace” is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom. “Amazing Grace” was written by Christopher Smith (book, music, and lyrics) and Arthur Giron (book). Gabriel Barre, who directed the Broadway production, reunites with choreographer Christopher Gattelli for the national tour. Music direction will be by Keith Levenson. The show debuted on Broadway in June 2015, with a cast led by Josh Young as Newton, Chuck Cooper as Pakuteh, Tom Hewitt as Captain Newtown, and Erin Mackey as Mary Catlett. “Amazing Grace” is a captivating tale of romance, rebellion and redemption in the life of a man whose incredible journey ignited a historic wave of change. “Amazing Grace” will be showing on April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Rudder Theatre. For ticket information visit www.mscopas.org or contact the MSC Box Office at 979-845-1234. This is a show warrants a 10 out 10 review and is a history worth seeing.

TV SHOW REVIEW: HOMELAND SHOWTIME by Ashali Chimata

The Showtime production “Homeland” features Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a Central Intelligence Agency Agent with bipolar disorder. The series begins with Mathison receiving intel that a U.S. Marine Sniper and American hero was held captive by al-Qaeda and convinced to spy for the enemy. The remainder of the show evolves from that premise. Damian Lewis stars as Nicholas Brody, the sniper that Agent Mathison works to figure out. The idea for the show was adapted from the Israeli series “Prisoners of War.” Homeland has run strong for six seasons, and the seventh season was released this spring on Hulu. What I love about “Homeland” is the variety of backdrops, languages, and cultures in which it takes place. There are whole seasons that take place in Beirut, Berlin, Kabul, and Islamabad. Additionally, it shows an imperfect person trying to protect people, do her job, and follow her instincts. The seventh season takes place back in Washington D.C. where Carrie works to dismantle the new President Keane’s administration, after the President orders mass arrests and tramples on civil rights. While this season does not offer the global experience of the previous seasons, it provides the “spy thriller” vibe that the show has promised. While this show is a great one, it may only be suitable for those with the patience to get through some slow-moving episodes, which do lead up to well-written and jarring plot twists. Also, through the depiction of Carrie’s struggle with bipolar disorder, the show gives us the common motif of the tortured protagonist. The current season will end April 29 2018, and the series has been renewed for an eighth season. It has received overall extremely positive reviews since 2011 and garnered several Golden Globe and Emmy awards. If you are looking for an international spy thriller, I highly recommend “Homeland.”

CONFRONTING A NUCLEAR NORTH KOREA by Ashali Chimata

In the past, Wiley Lecture Series has brought Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Secretary of State Dr. Madeline Albright, and Secretary of State Condelezza Rice to Bryan-College Station. This year, the students of Wiley have invited Mr. Christopher Hill, former Ambassador to South Korea, Mr. Nicholas Burns, former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and General Robert Foglesong (Ret.), former Commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe, to discuss the ramifications of the North Korea’s recent nuclear activity. The panel will be moderated by CNN Commentator and Presidential Historian, Mr. Douglas Brinkley.

One of the things that makes living in the Bryan-College Station area so great is the opportunity we have to see all the inspiring speakers and world leaders that come to Texas A&M’s campus each year to share their experiences with our community. This year is no different; The MSC Wiley Lecture Series will be hosting their main program, “Confronting a Nuclear North Korea,” later this week. Wiley Lecture Series is a completely student-run organization that aims to expand the educational experiences of the Texas A&M community by providing thought-provoking programs on national and foreign policy issues. The organization hosts symposia throughout the year, and their program culminates with the annual spring Main Program, featuring world renowned leaders.

The distinguished speakers will discuss the possibility of both diplomatic and military actions to ensure global stability in the wake of the North Korean state’s threats and promises. The panel will also predict the possible routes the Trump Administration will take to accomplish America’s objectives on an international scale. “I look forward to Wiley’s programs every year because it is a chance to see world leaders speak and to discuss very controversial issues in the world” said junior sociology major, Sarah Mckeen. The program will take place April 6, at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online with the MSC Box Office at $10 for student tickets or $15 for non-student tickets.

ROYALTY PECAN FARMS It is said that every American is at most three generations removed from the farm, which explains a lot of the misconceptions that circle around agriculture. Many farmers and ranchers want nothing more than to correct those misunderstandings, so welcoming people out to the farm for a chance to see the real happenings is extremely important. Local wine is in ever-growing demand, and it seems that more and more Texas wines appear on the market daily. Viticulture is rapidly expanding in the Lone Star State, and as long as Texans have pride in their state, these homegrown wines will continue to flourish. That’s what makes opportunities like orchard tours hard to pass up. Royalty Pecan Farms, located off Highway 21 between Bryan-College Station and Caldwell, is a family owned and operated pecan farm that also serves as a tourist attraction for the area. Here, the public has the chance to meet with those in charge of the farm to understand more about pecans and pecan production. Royalty Pecan Farms is hosting an orchard tour and wine tasting on Saturday, April 7. The orchard tour takes the visitor on a historical journey of the farm’s past, from how the farm got started to how grew to its current operation. Tour goers also get the opportunity to crack pecans and taste-test some of the products. The tour begins at 12:30 p.m. and lasts around an hour. Tickets are $5 per person and children ages 4 and younger ride for free. The wine tasting occurs after the orchard tour is complete. Visitors are invited to head over to the gift shop, where those 21 and over can enjoy a complimentary flight of three Texas wines. The gift shop also offers homemade delicacies, gifts and specialty foods in addition to the selection of wines. The tasting begins at 1 p.m. and wraps up at 4 p.m. If you can’t make it on April 7, don’t fret. Tours are offered every Saturday throughout the year, with three tours being offered each weekend in November and December. Special manager’s tours are offered on the second Saturday of the month for no additional cost. Wine tastings are only available on the first Saturday of the month, so plan your future trips accordingly.

by Abby Newton “The 6th Annual Premiere Market,” presented by the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, is the most unique market experience in the Brazos Valley. This year, “The Premiere Market” will feature a great list of participating merchants, and the majority of them are from Texas. Weekend markets are hard to find, so serious market shoppers won't want to miss out. Unlike a traditional farmer's market or artisan market, not all products will be home-made. Merchants at this market will be selling unique specialty items, home accessories, clothing, gourmet foods, jewelry and more. This two-day event is the only upscale market in the area. Although this market only occurs once a year, the higher quality products and extended time frame transforms classic market shopping into something more. On Friday, April 6, the event will kick off with a VIP event, "Muffins, Mimosas & More!,” for those who sent in an RSVP before April 2nd. The breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 11 a.m., so those who would like to enjoy some treats while shopping may do so. Shopping for everyone on Friday is schedule from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, April 7, there is a "Bacon & Bloody Mary's!" special from 10 a.m. to noon, which can be enjoyed by all shoppers. Open shopping on Saturday is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you missed the deadline to RSVP for "Muffins, Mimosas & More!" have no fear. To go along with all of that deliciousness, refreshments will be available to shoppers throughout all scheduled shopping hours. Attending the market gives you the opportunity to get all your spring shopping done, whether it is for Mother's Day, summer birthdays and weddings or simply transitioning into warmer weather. “The Premiere Market” will take place at the Brazos County Expo Center April 9 and 10. Tickets for adult shoppers cost $5, and children ages 10 and under will be admitted for free. Ticket sales support the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra.

BRAZOS VALLEY READS by Madison Caldwell

This year’s “Brazos Valley Reads” will take place on April 10, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event will be held on the Texas A&M Campus at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center. This event is organized by the Texas A&M English Department. However, this event is intended to be a holistic community effort, and it has only been so successful in the past because of the extensive support and group effort from various groups both on and off the Texas A&M Campus. “Brazos Valley Reads” started up back in 2005, with hopes of bridging the gap between members of the TAMU community and the rest of the Brazos Valley community. For the past 13 years, “Brazos Valley Reads” has invited internationally recognized authors to participate in this special event, through public readings and meet and greets with members of the community. “Brazos Valley Reads” plans on bringing back an alumni to be the featured author this Spring. Joy Castro will be joining us here in Aggieland this April 9 to 11. Joy Castro is a professor of English and Ethics at the University of NebraskaLincoln. She is the author of two thriller novels, among other works, and her featured works for this event will be a short story collection paired with an essay collection. Castro’s fiction collection “How Winter Began” and her nonfiction essay collection “Island of Bones” will be featured.

“Island of Bones” is a raw collection of personal essays that show Castro’s experiences growing up as an adopted Latina girl in a land full of Jehovah’s witnesses. “How Winter Began” is a delicate collection of stories all centering around the omnipresent theme of whether to trust someone after the burn of betrayal. Her novels have won awards with the Nebraska Book Award, and Castro was the winner of the International Latino Book Award for Most Inspirational Nonfiction Book. Come on out and support “bridging the gap” between the Aggie community and the residential. This event is also sponsored and organized by Barnes & Noble Bookstore, Blinn College, College of Liberal Arts, Clara B. Mounce Public Library, The Eagle, Larry J. Ringer Public Library, Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research and the Women’s Resource Center. It seems as if the whole community has really come together in support of this educational and unique literary event. Come out and listen to an award-winning teacher and read some award-winning novels that she wrote and published. There will be a meet and greet after Castro’s program, so book fans (or just fellow writers like myself) head on over for an awesome encounter with a professional. For more information about this event or Castro’s visit in particular feel free to contact brv@tamu.edu.
