Texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to be in a road collision. Statistics like this concerned Texas A&M alumna Marci Corry and motivated her to develop an app to incentivize people to practice safe driving. Safe2Save is an app that allows you to rack up points while you drive, as long as you do not use your cell phone. You can redeem your points for discounts and deals at local restaurants and retail such as Genghis Grill, Cafe Eccell, French Door Salon, Mad Taco, and many more establishments. Worried you won’t remember to open the app? There is now an option for the app to automatically open when you exceed 15 miles per hour. That said, I recommend having your phone on charge in the car, because having GPS on can drain the battery. The app, which motivates users to be responsible, has recently expanded to Odessa, Waco, Midland, Temple, Cypress, and Jersey Village.

MOVIE REVIEW: READY PLAYER ONE by Abby Newton

MOVIE REVIEW

“Ready Player One,” a science fiction/action movie based on the 2011 book by Ernest Cline, takes you out of the current time and into the year 2044. Virtual reality is no longer just fun in “Ready Player One.” It is a way of life and a true escape from reality. Due to a crippling energy crisis, the depletion of fossil fuels, the intense effects of global warming and overpopulation, people in 2044 live in a harsh world. They choose to escape their discouraging realities by turning to the OASIS, a virtual world created by a genius innovator. The vast majority of the population enjoyed the OASIS for years with little pressure, before the creator passed away and a leaked video revealed a secret about the OASIS which changed the game. The main character, Wade Watts, plays the game to avoid his poverty-stricken existence, but he realizes it is much more than just a game when he finds the first key of the secret quest hinted at in the leaked video. This captivating film takes you into a new world, although it is not far from our own world. Drones, virtual reality and greed have transformed innovation into unimaginable power, and Wade knows that power is dangerous in the wrong hands. Although some may find the film to be too far off from the novel, both the book and the film take a new look into the potential of technology and the importance of living in the moment. Ready Player One was released on March 29 and was directed by Steven Spielberg. This is an action-packed film you won’t be able to take your eyes off of.

ALBUM REVIEW Diplo’s new 6 song EP “California” is a testament to how soulful EDM can be. Diplo takes the genre to new levels with different emotions paired with somewhat spirited versions of classic EDM sound duos. It may take you a listen or two to really capture the full sound and meaning of the EP, but, once you fully get into the hype, it’s got a phenomenal sound, chill undertone and even better vibe. Diplo collaborates with artists from the next generation of rappers trying to find their sound. This EP features a lot of popular and trending upcoming rap artists such as Lil Yachty, Desiigner, Lil Xan and more.

ARTIST: Diplo ALBUM: California RELEASED: March 23, 2018

If you’re in a dancing mood, at a party or even just wanting something to pick you up after a long day, turn it on. Push play. It’s a great way to get you out of any slump or bad mood. For some that may not be fans of this particular kind of music, I get it. I’m not either. But this correlation of perfect melodies is just the EP that would change your mind about electronic dance music.

It may not be the music of our parents’ generation, but it’s the music of ours! We should embrace and support this electronic movement. So if you’re bored and looking for something new, or if you’re with friends and in charge of that power chord, put this on. This was a trippy and chill album, with the cover art for each song on Spotify really messing with my brain and imagination. The laid back mood really pervades throughout the entirety of each song, even though these different artists’ original styles and genres are drastically different in range. And hey, only half the songs have an “explicit” label tagged onto them, so that’s cool. “Look Back is definitely my least favorite song of the lot, sorry DRAM too whiny. While “Wish” I would say is my favorite tune, which is weird because although it is repetitive I really liked the emotions the song evoked. As Diplo stated in the song, “Maybe the world is yours” so let’s go out and live it like that!

FIGHT

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: BUBBA BUSH When one door closes, another door opens. But for Bubba Bush, the door was kicked, punched and knocked out from the frame.

At the age of 12, Bush started wrestling competitively and continued to do so through high school. While attending Texas A&M University and serving in the Corps of Cadets, Bush missed the mats and decided to join a mixed martial arts gym. “I started training with Brazos Valley Mixed Martial Arts and Fitness in 2006,” he said. “I loved it. I remembered what it was like to be on the mats.” Nine months later, Bush decided to get paid to, as he put it, “get punched in the face.” On April 27, 2007, Bush competed in his first professional fight, winning in the first round. “I went straight pro because amateur wasn’t really a thing back then,” Bush said. “I figured I’d at least get paid while I’m training.” But fighting wasn’t the goal for his career. Instead, Bush was working toward a life in law enforcement. When that didn’t work out, Bush returned to the cage in 2010 to continue his professional career.

Bush went on to have a successful career in the UFC, finishing with eight wins and three losses. His last fight was a three-round knockout loss in October 2015. With his fighting career behind him, Bush took his passion for the sport back to BVMMA and Fitness as a coach and trainer. “I’m currently running BVMMA and Fitness, were I coach, teach, train coaches and run the back office,” Bush said. He’s also involved with Valor Fight League, a nonprofit, amateur MMA organization that arranges fights in the area. Bush began assisting with the promotion of local fights in April 2016, but

FIGHT the upcoming bouts in April 2018 will be a solo mission for Bush. Bush’s passion for fighting and training has helped with running BVMMA and Fitness. “What we do now is 95 percent commercial,” Bush said. “95 percent of the people in our gym will never step in the cage.” That said, BVMMA and Fitness has a fairly large amateur fight team, including a couple fighters going pro. “But most of the people there are just doing cardio kick boxing or Brazilian jiu-jitsu for exercise or self-defense,” Bush said. “On the side, we train around 15 people who want to be fighters or have fought before to help them push their goals.” Bush acknowledged that while some goals didn’t work out, he’s happy how things played out. “I love what I do,” Bush said. BVMMA and Fitness offers a variety of classes to fit the needs and interests of their clients. A class schedule, as well class overviews and coach bios, can be found at www.bvfit.com.

BV BOOK FESTIVAL:

The “Brazos Valley Book Festival” is finally here. Last fall, Hurricane Harvey hit and made attending some events, such as this one, too dangerous. The local sponsors of the “Brazos Valley Book Festival” decided to postpone their event, but now the wait is over. The Brazos Valley Book Festival was created thanks to Houston based company iQuriousKids Inc. and their passion for helping parents find quality after school activities for children. The event is an opportunity to spend your day meeting authors, celebrating books and supporting literacy for children of all ages.

The Curious Vinyl Re-Opening will take place throughout an entire fun-filled day on Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The official ribbon cutting for the reopening will take place on Friday, April 11 at the Chamber of Commerce. This vinyl store’s new location will be located right behind Brazos Valley Natural Foods on North Rosemary Dr. However, this unique store isn’t just your basic level record shop, as all your record, turntable and musical needs can be attended to here. Curious Collections has even stated on their site that if you don’t see what you’re looking for, just give em’ a call. They will look to see if they have it in storage, and if they don’t the shop will do everything in their power to find it for you! This chic shop has the largest vinyl collection within a hundred mile radius. The whole collection was started when a loving father passed on his personal collection of around 10,000 albums to his daughter. Mary, the funky shop owner and daughter, has been proudly adding to her fathers collection over the years, and her shop has only continued to grow and grow! Mary was able to turn her father’s love for music into a heartwarming career. Curious Collections is more than just simply a music store. It’s a place for one to turn their passion for music into more than just a hobby. This inviting shop offers a wide variety of cute home decor, record players, turntable needles and rare vinyls. From turntable repairs to lessons on how to best care for and maintain your classy collection, there’s a wealth of musical knowledge available in this shop. Come in and get lost in all the different genres and vinyl options. This new and improved location is expected to be even better than the original, with a more expansive music collection (not to mention space to browse). From one fellow music lover to another, this place really is worth checking out. As Dave Berry once said, “the four building blocks of the universe are fire, water, gravel and vinyl.” Submerse yourself in different cultures of music, and learn to embrace and love music from past eras. Since purchasing my record player, I have found a brand new love and appreciation for the oldies. For more information, or just to check out what groovy tracks they have up for grabs, feel free to check out College Station’s only official vinyl record store at curiouscollectionstx.com.

LUBA

TV SHOW REVIEW: AMERICAN IDOL ABC by Justin Walker

by Hannah Payne

opens pop up shop in college station by Abby Newton

Luba by Hannah Payne is a women’s clothing label that was established in 2014. The label was originally based in Colorado, but, as Luba expands, they are placing pop-up shops in various states in order to gauge potential success and reach new customers. The next stop for this high-quality brand is College Station. Luba has partnered with The George to plan an evening of shopping, snacks and more right in Century Square. All of Payne’s clothes are designed and made in New York City and Los Angeles. The label prides themselves on the fact that every level of the clothes-making process takes place in the United States. The pop-up shop will include an array of jackets, dresses and tops that are of the quality and style you might find in your favorite boutique. Luba is a label focused on female empowerment. They use this focus to create quality clothing and promote body positivity, supporting diversity in the industry and keeping the needs of real women in mind at all times. Luba is unlike the numerous brands that subscribe to unattainable beauty standards and are unrealistic for real women. When you attend the pop-up shop, you will enjoy complimentary cocktails and light snacks while you shop. A portion of the proceeds from the pop-up shop will be donated to local nonprofit organization Twin City Mission. This nonprofit has been helping people in the Brazos Valley that are homeless, abused or in need since 1963. They have a reputation of being a group of locals giving their time to other locals, and they are truly making a difference in the lives of Brazos Valley residents. Don’t forget to head to Century Square for this one-day shopping and social experience on April 19 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Luba by Hannah Payne is committed to quality and service. Support your community, have a cocktail and check out American-made clothes made for real women.

It seems television executives have run out of ideas. There are so many revivals of previous hits on the small screen this year, with favorites “Will and Grace” and “Rosanne” being the headlines. There is even talk of “The Office” getting a reboot (please, oh please let this be a thing). But one series showing a true revamp is “American Idol.” Back from the dead on a new network, “American Idol” is looking to be in much better shape than when it left us in 2016. What was once a major source of views for Fox, saw declining ratings over the last few seasons as the original judges left and productions tried to recapture the significance of its early seasons. After 15 seasons and a smorgasbord of high profile judges, the show called it quits. After a year off and a network switch, “American Idol” is back and honestly better than it has been since original judge Simon Cowell left. Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie make up the star-studded panel, with Ryan Seacrest returning as host. For the first time since Cowell’s departure, the judges actually give quality feedback and direction for both those moving on and going home. Even production has gotten their act together. No more three-weeklong episodes covering Hollywood Week. Instead, the three rounds in Los Angeles last just two episodes. While many people enjoyed the hilarious failed auditions in years past, the show now longer gives those performers airtime. In all honesty, that’s probably a good thing, as the mental health of some of those people shouldn’t have been capitalized on to gain views. All in all, “American Idol” seems to be on the upswing. They may still struggle to compete against “The Voice,” but if they keep making the necessary changes, the show could be back for a while.

BAND OF HEATHENS at GRAND STAFFORD introspective effort.

by Ashali Chimata

Their 2016 EP, “Color Me Lucky,” garnered media praise and radio play in the US as well as internationally. The success of Color Me Lucky continued into 2017 with tour dates across the US, UK, and France. In 2013, Band of Heathens released the critically acclaimed album titled “Sunday Morning Record.” The album charted at the number 2 spot on the Americana Charts, and was selected as the number one album by “The Alternative Root.”

One of the great perks about living in the Bryan-College Station area is the abundance of live music performances. This week is no different, as Band of Heathens and Jonathon Tarrell will be performing at the Grand Stafford Theater on Thursday evening. Austin based rock group Band of Heathens includes musicians Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist, Trevor Nealon, Richard Millsap, and Scott Davis. The band’s fifth studio album, “Duende,” marks their tenth anniversary as a group. It is a stylistically diverse effort that takes a leap beyond their last, more acoustic,

A 400-person capacity live music and private event venue, the Grand Stafford Theater offers a full-service bar, mezzanine seating and a secondlevel bar, all with the rich character and accents of a 100-year-old theater in downtown Bryan. The theater closed earlier this past fall for two months, because they were not able to extend the rental agreement when the building was up for sale. When an agreement was reached with the new owners, they were back in business by November. The venue has a long concert history, including being known as Stafford Opera House in the 1990s and later the Dixie Theatre. It reopened as Grand Stafford in 2012 after a renovation. The show is on April 12 at 8 p.m., and the doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets in advance are $15, while tickets at the door cost $18.
