Dating is hard. Online dating was supposed to help, but honestly, it’s made things more complicated. Enter a new and unique dating app: Waving. In the app, users upload audio recordings of themselves instead of selfies and professional headshots. You can talk about yourself in a way that fits your personality. It’s often hard to portray yourself through the written word, mostly because tone is decided often decided by the reader and not the writer. Waving also enforces the old saying of “don’t judge a book by its cover.” With those other apps, you can design the perfect cover for your book, but those pages may be shallow and underwhelming. On the flip side, one bad photo and you pages may never be read. With Waving, users get the story first, then the cover. While both play an important role in attraction, we often overlook personality when physical attributes don’t meet our standards. Waving is pretty straightforward and easy to use. The same basic principles apply for approving other users; swipe left for no and right for yes. But getting to hear and understand someone will probably create more rewarding relationships in the long run, which sets Waving apart from the other apps.

MOVIE REVIEW: A QUIET PLACE by Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW

Silence can be deafening. In today’s society, noise is a fact of life. We take for granted the ability to take a step without fear of a creaky floor. The most troubling aspect of dropping a glass object is, and should be, the shattered glass, not the piercing sound it makes. And if we so happen to step on a nail, by all means, we have the luxury of screaming out in agony. So what if you lived in a world of silence, unable to make even the slightest noise? “A Quiet Place” answers that for us, and the response is horrifying.

Based in the not-so-distant future, a family lives in complete silence, communicating through American Sign Language (ASL). The world around them is empty, and it’s not until the youngest of the family activates the sound from a toy that the audience is introduced to the true horror of the film: sightless, man-eating creatures that hunt by sound. As the movie progresses, the audience experiences what life would be like without the simplicities of kitchen appliances, vehicles and verbal communication. Instead, the family is reduced to near muteness in fear of death. John Krasinski directs and stars in the film, playing the survivalist father bent on protecting his family at all costs. Krasinski’s real-life wife, Emily Blunt, plays his on-screen wife, which creates a level of chemistry between the two characters that is almost impossible to replicate. The use of a deaf actress to play the role of the deaf daughter is also key to the movie’s success. ASL is used as the primary source of communication. In fact, the first word spoken comes almost 45 minutes into the 90-minute film. Having an actress who understands the role so personally helps portray the character to the audience in an extremely authentic way. “A Quiet Place” is terrifying. It will scare you. It will disgust you. It will most likely make you tear up. But one thing it won’t do is disappoint you. This film has all the makings of the best film of 2018. My advice? See it as soon as you can. ALBUM REVIEW Rapper Cardi B’s debut studio album, “Invasion of Privacy,” hit hard last week. I was initially skeptical. Albums that generate dramatic tabloid headlines often offer more flash than substance, and I really wasn’t too interested in an album that needed a catfight with Nicki Minaj to get attention. But Cardi B proves herself over and over again on this album, which is, probably not coincidentally, one of the album’s overarching themes.

“Bodak Yellow,” “I Like It,” and “Bartier Cardi” are some of the standout songs from this album. These tracks perfectly encapsulate Cardi’s understandably brazen attitude, but there are also tracks like “Ring” and “Be Careful” where she changes the mood a little, slowing down the music and letting listeners in a little. The album draws from Cardi B’s own rags-to-riches story. Lines like “I been broke my whole life, I have no clue what to do with these racks,” from “Money Bags,” aren’t hyperbole. Cardi worked her way from poverty and domestic violence in the Bronx to international acclaim as an artist at the age of 25. Of course her lyrics mostly celebrate her victories. There have been many. And I think it’s safe to bet that she has many more to come.

2018 wine & roses festival

There are some iconic scenes in television history that revolve around grape stomping. Look back to the episode of “I Love Lucy,” where Lucy tries to prepare for a movie role by visiting an Italian vineyard, stomping (and falling) into the grapes with all her might. Or more recently, when an Atlanta television reporter covering a local wine event fell several feet from the platform, becoming an overnight internet sensation.

There will be plenty of other exciting aspects to this year’s festival, beginning with food and drinks. Guests can take advantage of a day-long wine tasting, sampling the many wines Messina Hof has to offer. Wine and chocolate pairing classes are available as well, where attendees will try a variety of gourmet chocolates paired with award-winning wines. Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy a family-style Italian feast, which includes a smorgasbord of fantastic Italian foods.

While you may not make it on television, here’s your chance to experience the joy that is grape stomping.

The arts will also be on display at the festival. Live music will take place at the Rose Garden and the Lakeside Deck periodically throughout the day. Guests will also get to vote on wine labels designed by Texas artists. The winner will have their art featured on a Messina Hof wine bottle.

“The 2018 Wine & Roses Festival” will take place on Saturday, April 21, as Messina Hof celebrates the 34th anniversary of the budding of the vines and the blooming of the roses at their winery and resort. The event begins at 11 a.m., and wraps up around 8 p.m. that evening. The highlight of the event is the grape stomp competition. Teams ranging from two to four members will compete in two-minute heats, trying to fill bottles with juice. The team with the most juice in the bottle advances to the next round of heats. Prizes will be awarded for the top three teams, so start practicing!

For those looking to extend the party another day, the Wine & Roses half marathon and 5K races will take place on Sunday, April 22, starting at 7 a.m. The path leads runners through the vines of Messina Hof Winery and Resort, with wine tasting stations throughout the course. So enjoy a wine-filled weekend with Messina Hof and celebrate 34 years of great wine from the Brazos Valley.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: KENNDALL LEWIS Oftentimes when we have goals that we hope to accomplish, we are told that “the sky’s the limit.” Well for amateur MMA Fighter, Kenndall Lewis, that’s turning out to be true. We were able to catch up with Lewis before his MMA Title Fight on April 21.

After three years and countless hours of training, Lewis has fought and worked his way to fighting in the “Brazos Throwdown 4” on April 21. When asked about how he has trained for this fight, Lewis was sure to keep it simple and not give away too much.

A Former Rudder Ranger, Lewis grew up right in the backyard of Texas A&M University in Bryan, TX. Lewis started training for MMA after graduating from Rudder High School in 2013.

“My training camp has been great, and I’m excited to show everyone what I have learned,” Lewis said. “I’m very excited for my first ever title match.”

“I got started in fighting right after I graduated high school,” Lewis said. “One of my best friends, Chris, was training at Windy Sports and Fitness [where] he introduced me to Bobby Powers and Jermaine. I’ve been in love with the sport ever since.” After putting in many hours of hard work in and out of the training ring, Lewis had his first fight in 2015. When asked to recollect that day and the emotions he felt, this is what he had to say. “My first MMA, I was nervous but excited. The very first round, I went out there and the guy picked me up, slammed me and I felt a pop in my jaw.” Lewis said. “The round ends, I go back to my corner, tell my coaches and they tell me that I’m okay. We continue fighting, and I end up winning the fight with a broken jaw.”

Winning the Title Fight would be a huge accomplishment for Lewis, and he is looking forward to adding those credentials to his MMA resume. However, aside from training and matches, Lewis enjoys spending time with his family.

FIGHT At just 22-years-old, Lewis is a full-time father and husband to his daughter Aliyah and wife Lanie, while also working fulltime and pursing his MMA career. “They are my biggest inspirations. The motivate me to work harder inside and outside of the gym to be the best husband, father and fighter I can be,” Lewis said. He finds that balancing it all can be tough, but with the constant support and help from family and friends he simply considers himself to be “blessed.” “It feels hectic at times, but I know God wouldn’t put anything on me that I couldn’t bear,” Lewis said. When Lewis isn’t in the gym training, he enjoys going to the park with his family, hanging with his friends at the shooting range, playing quite a bit of Xbox and attending Two42 College Ministry at

Brazos Fellowship Church. As a local of Bryan-College Station, Lewis had a lot to prove to the Brazos Valley, but he has been received well. “I cannot even explain, but it is a great feeling,” Lewis said. “The love and support that I have gotten from everyone has been outstanding.” Lewis hopes to take his career as an amateur MMA fighter to the next level buy going pro and hopefully being a competitor in the UFC in the next 10 to 15 years. In the meantime, audiences can see him go toe-to-toe with his competitor Benacour at the “Brazos Showdown 4” on April 21. Tickets are going fast, and it’s a show you don’t want to miss. Make the Brazos Valley proud, Kenndall.

Country music artist Steve Moakler carved his own path and built his career through consistency, hard work and miles on the road. The past ten years have proven that Moakler is here to stay. As he worked to make a name for himself in Nashville, Moakler released three studio albums that each made their way onto country music charts. His next album has been announced and is scheduled to release later this year, but two tracks are already available in on music streaming services.

Moakler’s most recent release, “Breaking New Ground,” became available this March and is the second single, after the title track, from his next album “Born Ready.” His previous album “Steel Town” was inspired by Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Moakler is originally from western Pennsylvania, and his love for the state is what led to the honoring of his home in the best way possible.

2014, White was selected for season eight of The Voice in 2015. He performed as part of Blake Shelton’s team and made it into the top ten on that season. This 23 year old performer is too unique and wildly talented to miss out on. Moakler is still considered an up and coming artist in Nashville, but he definitely deserves the same recognition of other Nashville country artists. Although this will be his first time in College Station, he is bound to bring down the house just like he does in the Country Music Capital of the World. The show opener, Corey Kent White, stands out by taking traditional country music and adding contemporary pop influences in terms of melodies and production styles. White began singing at the age of three, playing the guitar at the age of eight and performing at the age of eleven. After the release of his first album in

MUSTER AT TEXAS A&M

It is the time of year, once again, when Aggies all over the world come together to remember and honor fellow Aggies who have passed away in the previous year. This long-standing tradition of Texas A&M University allows former, current and future students to celebrate the lives of fallen Aggies and reminisce on memories, share stories and bond over their love for Aggieland. As the roll of Aggies who have passed in the last year is called, a representative for each will answer “here,” and the Texas A&M Class of 1968, celebrating their 50th class reunion, will sit in rows of chairs on the floor of Reed Arena. Each candle will be lit, and those who lost loved ones may weep. This is a special year for one of Texas A&M’s most beloved traditions. There is a strong possibility that there will be a special mention of Lt. Col. William A. Hamilton, Jr., from the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 1940. Hamilton was the last Aggie survivor of 1942’s legendary “Muster on the Rock” at Corregidor in the Philippines. The tradition of Muster was made famous at the renowned “Muster on the Rock,” where Aggie soldiers gathered during WWII to honor the Aggies they’d lost during the fighting. Hamilton passed away at the age of 99 on January 4, 2018, and he will forever be one of the brave Aggies we remember for their unfailing loyalty to their country and their school. The history of Muster is a story nearly every Aggie holds in their heart, and it helps ensure that we never forget Hamilton and his fellow Aggies who risked their lives for us all. The Association of Former Students works hard each year to host the best possible Muster. This year, they will hold the first live reading of the entire 2018 Worldwide Roll Call of about 1,700 names. Information on where to watch the live stream is on The Association’s website. The keynote address with be delivered by the second woman to ever be chosen to speak at Muster, Kathleen Gibson ’81. Gibson is the president and CEO of the Southwestern Medical Foundation, serves as a trustee of the Texas A&M Foundation and previously served as chair of The Association of Former Students board in 2014. She was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M this year, which is known as the highest honor a former student can receive from Texas A&M. The Muster Ceremony and Roll Call for the Absent takes place April 21 at 7 p.m. in Reed Arena. Parking is often difficult to find rear Reed Arena on this night, so consider arriving early, carpooling or parking elsewhere on campus. Take a look at the Association of Former Students website to find details on Muster-related events taking place throughout the week such as the “Camaraderie Barbecue” Friday, April 20, 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the “Reflections Display” that will be in the Memorial Student Center Flag Room throughout the week leading up to Muster.

The Bubba Blackwell Stunt Show will be taking place on Saturday April 21. This fast and furious event is being hosted by the Ranch Harley-Davidson, the only authorized Harley Davidson dealership in Aggieland. This day-long unique and exhilarating event will take place right off of State Highway 6 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Bubba Blackwell is a well-known American stunt performer and motorcycle bike jumper, who also happens to be a world record holder! This death defying daredevil is known for his insane stunts and crazy long jumps. However, as a stuntman turned movie star, Blackwell has also starred on “The Tonight Show” in 1999 and on Discovery Channel’s reality TV series titled, “Heirs to the Dare.” Blackwell rose to fame in his thirties by breaking his childhood idol’s 19 car motorcycle jump record. As you can see, since the very start this man has been performing above par. Blackwell has been wowing his fans for the past three decades. Blackwell is actively traveling on the circuit, performing all across the country. This talented man has been proudly sponsored by Harley Davidson for years now. However, prior to his current sponsorship, Blackwell was supported by now-defunct Buell Motorcycle Company. Luckily, Buell conveniently partnered with Harley Davidson Motorcycles before closing in 2009. Blackwell is most widely known for breaking Evel Knievel’s famous jump record. Knievel jumped 19 carson a motorcycle This set a record in 1971, which lasted until Blackwell came along in 1998. Blackwelll later also beat Knievel’s last remaining jump record by jumping 52 stacked cars on October 4, 20018 using a Harley Davidson XR-750 flat-track racing motorcycle. Talk about tricks to definentaly not try at home! Watch this wonder come out and show us all his tricks of the trade. This unique show is sure to be one worth viewing. So come on out and give this legend a whirl. Alabama’s most famous stuntman is sure to give everyone the ride of their lives! As if I haven’t already sold you, this event will also be providing free adult beverages (while they last), rockin’ live entertaining music, various vendors, snack-worthy food and door prizes. I mean seriously, what more could you ask for?! It’s time to take a ride with Bubba.

Netflix regularly produces quality tv shows that are often even more popular than the shows found on regular tv networks. “The End of the F***ing World” is a comedy that follows two lost teenagers through their journey toward finding themselves and what they believe is love. The main character, James, grew up getting a thrill out of killing small animals. His father attempts to manage James’ strange hobby, but he has no idea 17-year-old James is busy planning his first real murder. Alyssa, a girl without any real guidance, is unaware and uninterested in James’ plan, although she may be more involved in the plan than she wants to be. Only one season of “The End of the F***ing World” is currently available on Netflix, but it is a season worth watching. Kids who never believed in themselves run away from home and learn about life, love, family, truth and tragedy. This show takes a shot at turning a potential murder into a comedy about a boy finding himself. “The End of the F***ing World” received a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and according to the Rotten Tomatoes critics, “Misanthropy and humor pair perfectly in this romantically nihilistic show that proves that falling in love can feel like ‘The End of the F***ing World.’” As the title would indicate, this show is a story about high schoolers that might not necessarily be for younger audiences. Each episode is a wild ride, but prepare yourself for an ending that will leave you speechless and on the edge of your seat.

This family event will welcome anyone and everyone to join in on the magical fun. Boys and girls of all ages are encouraged to open their hearts and minds towards the innocent fun created by the imagination. The Princess Ball will be held Saturday April 21 at the ballroom in the Brazos County Expo Complex. This is the first “My Magical Memory Annual Ball” to be hosted in the Bryan-College Station area. This two hour-long event will be filled to the bibbity bobbity brim of magical fun! My Magic Memories official website proudly states, “We promote Intelligence, Curiosity, Hope, Kindness, Faith, Adventure and Dreams in ALL our Princes & Princesses! We are more than just a picture, we are a real life example of pure magic.” Their sparkly definition of magic is simply pure, and uncontainable joy. Magic is not age specific or picky, as it can be experienced by anyone from young to old! The Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts at Texas A&M University aims to increase resources to existing TAMU performing and visual arts departments and supplement existing campus arts offerings by producing diverse, innovative and prominent performing and visual artists. The AVPA supports practice-based research, and the development of performing and visual arts projects. In the past, AVPA has hosted orchestras, plays, and art exhibits.

The Bryan-College Station area is always buzzing with cultural events and activities, and this week is no different. The Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts at Texas A&M University is hosting “Sin Barreras,” a Spanish flamenco dancing show. Flamenco is a professional dance style which originated in Southern Spain, but is thought to be influenced by various cultures. The dance is also well-known in many different parts of the world now. Originally, flamenco dancing was not done to music, but rather, hand clapping

The La Juerga Flamenco Ensemble presents “Sin Barreras.” This show unites artists from various points of origin, including France, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela and The U.S. La Juerga presents a playful take on a traditional form of flamenco from southern Spain. “Sin Barreras” will feature Illeana Gomez, a dancer for La Juerga Flamenco Ensemble. The show is on Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. in Rudder Theatre. Tickets can be bought online at the MSC Box Office. Student tickets are $5, and non-student tickets are $7. Don’t miss out on seeing authentic flamenco dancing, and be on the lookout for other events hosted by the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts.

the ultimate bbq weekend at the stella hotel by Tyler Lewis

If you are a barbecue lover, then this event is for you! The Stella Hotel, in collaboration with 44 Farms and Black’s BBQ, will be hosting their first “Ultimate Barbecue Weekend.” Spanning three days, April 20 through 22, the barbecue-filled weekend will feature an array of opportunities to learn about and enjoy barbeque, including an educational Texas brisket class led by fourth-generation pitmaster Barrett Black of Black’s BBQ at 44 Farms. The weekend will also feature the “Barbecue, Brews and Bourbon” event at The Stella Hotel, which will have live music, food stations, local brews and bourbon. Day one of the event will kick off with a welcome dinner at The Stella’s on-site restaurant Campfire, featuring creative barbecue dishes, served alfresco on the expansive patio with fire pits and panoramic views of the nearby lake. Day two will start with coffee and breakfast on-the-go from The Stella’s on-site coffee shop, P.O.V., as guests are shuttled to 44 Farms. At the farm, guests will work alongside Barret Black, learning his tips and tricks for preparing great brisket. Class will be followed by a lunch where guests can chow down on Black’s BBQ’s famous brisket

and some classic barbecue sides from Campfire. Later that evening, guests will gather at The Back Yard, The Stella’s outdoor lawn, for “Barbecue, Brews and Bourbon.” The evening will feature live music and stations with food, local brews and bourbon for all to enjoy. On day three, the weekend wraps up on Sunday morning with a Barbecue Brunch at Campfire. The Stella’s culinary team and Barrett Black will team up to present a variety of breakfast-centric dishes that incorporate barbecue, Bloody Marys and brisket. The “Ultimate Barbecue Weekend” Package is $150 per person (plus tax and gratuity), and overnight accommodations are available for an additional price. A limited number of spots are available.
