HOME AGAIN
by Shelbi Polk
Alice’s issues are interrupted, or exacerbated, by a night of partying, which somehow leads us all through some almost romance and into three twentyseven year old starving artist types moving into her guest house. The guys, we hesitate to call at least two of them men, are completely broke, but they are desperately trying to get a movie finished and sold. They are, incidentally, a bit hard to tell apart, as they are all very clearly unnaturally tanned and coiffed. There’s a pretty baffling subplot where the guys fight over their film and whether or not they should have other jobs. The men in this film are taken more seriously than they really deserve to be, and only one of them even puts in the work necessary to create a film.
MOVIE REVIEW “Home Again,” writer and director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s newest film, follows the struggles of Alice Kinney, played by Reese Witherspoon, and her two daughters, as they move to L.A. Alice is happy to be home (again), where she grew up with a famous director for a father. She’s also sad to be home again, because she left her husband in New York… for some reason.
The almost romance does turn into a relationship, and that’s where things almost get interesting. Alice starts seeing one of her tenants, and it is pretty awkward. The love story is not convincing at all, but it does serve to highlight the issues inherent in an unequal relationship. It was interesting that the film tried to invert the genders of the classic ‘divorcé meets a much younger new person,’ but the relationship was overall pretty flat and uncomfortable. Luckily, that relationship is far from the focus of the movie. Although the film doesn’t quite succeed in what it is trying to do, it does end with a sugary answer for a family.
ALBUM REVIEW
by Madison Caldwell
Gather around, my new age hippies and garage rocker fans. Cage the Elephant has unleashed a new album that is unlike any other. “Unpeeled,” the band’s fifth album, was released in July by RCA Records. It is a perfect collaboration of old and new, as all of the tracks were recorded live and include percussion and a full string quartet. This rad album carries twenty-one tracks, with eighteen of them being curated songs from their previous albums. This live collection was recorded over a series of intimate shows played across the United States. From glamorous LA to rowdy Nashville and DC, these live tracks prove to be both inspirational and soothing. Contrary to what many may think, the live audience in no way disturbs the integrity of the piece, instead adding a nice aesthetic to the overall sound. ARTIST: Cage the Elephant ALBUM: Unpeeled RELEASED: July 28, 2017
So what makes this album so good, you ask? Well, my fellow music lovers, this remastered blast from the past not only shows the vulnerability of lead singer, Matt Shultz, in his original songs, but it raises the stakes higher as the band has chosen to incorporate strings, an uncommon feat for a rock band. Shultz commented on their newest album in an interview with Billboard.com. “We’re going to push ourselves in as many directions as we possibly can. At this stage in your life, [what you do] becomes a testimony to the greater picture,” Shultz said. Cage the Elephant’s music translates beautifully into an acoustic setting, and the implementation of string instruments truly adds a whole new level of depth to the pieces.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: CULT CLASSIC FILMS Tired of the typical new Transformers action movie or fifty shades of whatever rom-com? Wishing you could just go back to the good ol’ days? Well go grab your parachute pants from the attic and head on over to downtown Bryan, because boy, are you in for a treat. The Grand Stafford Theater presents (drumroll, please): Cult Classic Night! The theater will be showing a featured movie of the audience’s choosing, filled with nostalgic fun, handpicked for you, and by you.
by Madison Caldwell
Come on in, and cozy up in one of Bryan’s most prominent historical entertainment venues. This awesome theater dates back to the early 1910s, and was originally coined the Dixie Theater. Over the years, this theater has hosted hundreds of events, and, in an effort to tailor to the community’s wants and needs, the staff at the historical Grand Stafford Theater developed the Cult Classic Film Series. When asked what is actually considered a cult classic, Cynthia, a manager at the Stafford, simply stated that she and the rest of the staff hope to provide the audience with some bittersweet nostalgia from their past, that they can quote, laugh, and sing along to. Their goal is to keep the vibe fun, weird and comical. Every month, four “cult classic” film choices are provided for the audience and taken to a vote on the Grand Stafford’s Facebook page. Anyone and everyone is welcomed to both vote and give suggestions for future cult classic options. The winning “classic” is then displayed as a separate event on the Facebook page, detailing all of the necessary information while also providing a link to reserve tickets. The winner of this month’s poll is a quotable, action-packed film that has won the hearts of many: Pulp Fiction! These awesome flicks have been premiering since May, and the first two shows even sold out! Whether you grew up with these films or are just seeing them for the first time, come on out to see what it was like “back in the day” and watch some classic films in a theater, the way they were meant to be seen. You can catch good old Pulp Fiction on the big screen of the Stafford on September 17. The historic theater doors will open promptly at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased through the Grand Stafford Theater Facebook page.

cody johnson at wolf pen creek CODY JOHNSON SEPTEMBER 17 DOORS OPEN AT 3PM by Hannah Pena
Attention Aggieland: Get ready to put on your pearl snap shirts and twirl in your skirts, because Cody Johnson is coming back to College Station. Cody Johnson is a big deal in the country scene, and he’s back in town to kick off the school year at Wolf Pen Creek on September 17.
Johnson just yet. Being the swoony cowboy that he is, in “With You I Am,” Johnson expresses his woman’s influence on his work, creating a song that will more than likely have your significant other dragging you out onto the dance floor.
Johnson is no stranger to the spotlight or adoring fans, having six self-released albums. His sixth album, “Gotta Be Me,” was released back in 2016 and debuted at number two on the Billboard’s Country Albums chart.
Seeing Cody Johnson live in concert is a night you won’t forget. Even if you haven’t yet heard his work, you can’t help but fall for the way Johnson truly becomes his music. Johnson lives inside his words, and he recreates the emotion within those lyrics, laying himself bare to the audience. When Cody Johnson steps up to that microphone, he leaves everything else behind him. He is living in that moment and he’ll make you live it, too.
Johnson’s delivery of confidence and charm leaves you wanting to be a cowboy raised in outlaw country. His voice is undeniably unique, similar to country kings Jason Aldean or Tim McGraw. In the beginning of his “Gotta Be Me,” Johnson’s melodies paint a story of a rueful cowboy who drinks too much, fights too much, and is unapologetic about his opinions. For those of you who aren’t sold on the renegade style, don’t discard

PAINT YOUR PET AT PINOT’S PALETTE PINOT’S PALETTE SEPTEMBER 14 16X20 CANVAS by Azalea Andrade
Moms and dads of furry four-legged pets are welcome to attend the “Paint Your Own Pet” theme night at Pinot’s Palette in College Station. This paint and sip studio invites pet lovers on to learn how to paint a portrait of their furry loved one on Thursday, September 14. Formally named Pinot and Picasso, the first Pinot’s Palette affiliated studio opened up in the spring of 2009, in the unique and creative Montrose neighborhood of Houston, Texas. Just a year later, the company grew into a franchise, and it now has studios all across the country, including a location here in the Brazos Valley. Pinot’s Palette offers in-studio painting lessons and private parties for those 21 years or older. Customers are allowed to bring their own wine or cocktails and socialize while they are taught step-by-step how to canvas paint. The local art studio has partnered with Long Way Home Adoptables to host their most popular fundraising event, “Project Pet: Paint Your Pet.” Long Way Home Adoptables is a nonprofit organization that works solely with animal shelters to help save the lives of
small cats and dogs from euthanasia. This organization is a group of animal loving volunteers, who rescue and foster pets that are at risk of being “put down.” They take on animals that are at risk due to lack of space in shelters or because the animal has serious health conditions. Long Way Adoptables believes that all shelter animals should have a chance at a loving home. Fully funded by donations, the organization often teams up with other local businesses to promote the awareness of needy shelter animals, and they hope to gain more support from the community. For this event, the artists at Pinot Palette ask participants to send the photo they would like to paint in advance. The staff will sketch the portrait on a 16”X20” canvas to prepare you for a sip and paint experience. Pinot’s Palette will generously donate $22 per painting at the “Project Pet: Paint Your Pet” event to help Long Way Adoptables continue saving shelter pets’ lives.

Hurricane Harvey Was Strong, But Texas Is Stronger by Jaclyn Ysaquirre
Hurricane Harvey, which was a major story in both national and global news, has left the world grieving over its devastating aftermath in cities along the Texas coast. In our neighboring communities of the greater Houston area, Rockport, Port Aransas, Wharton, Freeport, Galveston and Lake Conroe, countless families, some that we may know, have experienced loss or damage to their homes, vehicles and personal belongings. Nearly 30,000 people have been evacuated from the intense flooding and sheltered in refuges across Texas.
Celebrity comedian Kevin Hart started a movement aimed to encourage other Hollywood superstars like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Steve Harvey, Justin Timberlake, and Jerry Seinfeld to donate $25,000 or more and continue the chain to fund emergency supplies for Harvey victims. Local Houston celebrity J.J. Watt has gone above and beyond as an NFL athlete, taking to social media to encourage fans to donate to his “Houston Flood Relief Fund.” Watt’s passion to give back to his community has gained admiration throughout the United States, and he raised more than $17 million, in less than a week, for the flood relief. Now, the majority of us are not as famous and wealthy as Kevin Hart or J.J. Watt, but everyone is capable of dedicating their time or money to help support our fellow Texans. Lots of former students jumped at the chance to raise funds. One of those was former Maroon Weekly employee Bekah Skinner. She designed a shirt with the Texas Strong icon on the previous page. She raised over $13,000 for flood victims. We have provided a list below of local businesses and organizations throughout the Brazos Valley that are coordinating donation drives to support shelters that are in need of supplies. You can also check out bcshelps.org. How to Help Infant and Child Victims: The Texas Diaper Bank, a nonprofit organization, aims to fill the diaper gap for families in a crisis. Your monetary support can be donated on their website,
www.texasdiaperbank.org. These funds are used to purchase diapers, baby items and incontinence supplies that are distributed throughout their 26 nonprofit partner organizations in counties across Texas. How to Help Elderly and Disabled Victims: Portlight Strategies, a nonprofit disaster relief organization, is collecting monetary donations to help with elderly and disability accommodations, medical equipment and assistive technology that could be an issue for shelters housing these disaster survivors. Please visit their website at www. portlight.org to donate. To Help Victims Located in Rockport and Port Aransas: Anytime Fitness will be collecting donations during their daily operation hours, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the 951 William D. Fitch Parkway, College Station, Texas. To Help With Patients in Need of Medical Assistance: The Blood Center of Brazos Valley is currently behind in their blood supply. They need blood donors to help replenish their supply, so that local healthcare facilities are able to provide the proper medical attention to patients. To Help Farmers and Ranchers Rebuild: The State of Texas Agricultural Relief Fund (STAR Fund) is collecting private monetary donations to aid in the recovery of Texas farms, ranches, producers and agribusiness owners. You can visit their website at texasagriculture.gov to give whatever dollar amount that you can.

austin english at lakeside icehouse AUSTIN ENGLISH SEPTEMBER 17 DOORS OPEN @ 6PM by Azalea Andrade Lakeside Icehouse, one of the ‘go to’ places for live music in the BCS area, will host College Station native Austin English on September 17. English has performed around College Station a number of times, and he is a popular performer at local venue Smitty K’s. English is known for his mix of Country, Americana and Blues. Austin’s debut EP “Crazy” is now available on Spotify. It consist of fives songs, and the single, also titled “Crazy,” is the most listened to song of the album. English’s music has a fast beat and really gets you wanting to two-step. At first listen, it sounds like straightforward Texas country. That wouldn’t be a wrong way to describe English’s music, but it also has a touch of alternative sound to it. Since English does mix up some genres, his sound is not like your ordinary country music. The more you listen to it, the more you can hear his natural talent. His songs are romantic, the kind of song you would dedicate to a significant other. English gets inspiration from some country artists, such as Bruce Springsteen, but also from diverse artists like Tom Petty, The Eagles and Stevie Ray Vaughan. His influences are from different genres, and you can really hear that in his music. Although one of his songs, “High Times and Low,” is a slower number, the other four are great dancing songs. There will be drinks at the show, and the environment will be one you cannot miss. Come out to Lake Bryan for a great time, while taking advantage of the beautiful sunset by the lake and some great live music. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and there is no charge for the show.

hurricane harvey benefit concert
No one could have predicted the mass amount of damage that would come with Hurricane Harvey. No one could have foreseen that one of the most populated cities in the U.S. would have been nearly submerged. There was nothing anyone could do, but now there is. The Grand Stafford Theater in Bryan, Texas is hosting a “Hurricane Harvey Relief Benefit Concert on Sunday, September 17 at 7pm. The concert will feature four bands from the Bryan/College Station area, whose members all have ties to greater Houston. Performers include The Ex-optimists, an indie/noise rock band influenced by the likes of Nirvana and Sonic Youth; Mutant Love, a punk/pop band; Electric Astronaut, a psych grunge band with rock roots influenced by Game of Thrones; and LUCA, an indie rock band.
A minimum $5 donation is requested at the door in order to attend, but concert attendees may donate more to the fund if they wish to do so. All proceeds collected will benefit the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, which was created by Houston mayor Sylvester Turner, and the Greater Houston Community Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to extending philanthropic impact with donors. The foundation fully supports their donors in a variety of ways, including offering solutions for the most complex of needs. Hurricane Harvey left behind devastation when it left behind broken homes and broken hearts. You may not be able to rebuild a house, but you are capable of restoring some hope back into the hearts of Houstonians by supporting some local music.

LIVE
Laughter is the best medicine, and an evening of comedy is a perfect way to take a break from the chaos of life. K9s4COPs, a Texas nonprofit organization, is bringing comedians Steve ‘Mudflap’ McGrew and Chad Prather to Texas A&M University’s Rudder Theater on September 15, 2017. K9s4COPs is an organization that is dedicated to ensuring that every law enforcement officer in need of a police dog, or “K9,” has one that is well trained and ready for action. This local nonprofit pays for the dog’s training, as well as for the dog itself. The founder, Kristi Schiller, was touched by a story she had seen in the Houston news, where a K9 had been dramatically killed in the line of duty. The department in this story unfortunately did not have the funds to replace the K9. Therefore, Schiller took action and decided to start this foundation.
K9s4COPs puts on many events in order to raise money for their cause. “Our tireless fundraising efforts are through events like the K9s4COPs UNLEASHED gala, Klays 4 K9s Sporting Clays Shoot, Paw 4 The Course Golf Tournament and the Minnesota Vikings NFL Football player Brian Robison’s annual Reel ‘Em In Foundation Fishing Tournaments,” said Executive Director Pam Mahoney. Although putting on events is the main way to promote this organization and to raise money, the organization also works through direct partnerships with donors. “We also write grants, as well as seek corporate donations and sponsorships,” Mahoney said. K9s4COPS has reason to be proud of the work they are doing. “200 million

LIVE in contraband is removed from the streets by K9s4COPs gifted K9 Officers,” Mahoney said. This specific event was sought out by the founder herself. She thought the comedians would be a great fit for a show in a college town. They were easy to reach out to, since both Prather and McGrew are always wanting to give back. Chad Prather is known as the ‘Political Cowboy,’ who never shies away from new challenges. His entertainment goes farther than just comedy. Prather mixes motivation and opinionated segments into his shows. His influence is seen mostly through social media, and he is the host of Ride Television Network’s “It’s My Backyard.” Steve ‘Mudflap’ McGrew, a nationally recognized comedian, is also known as “The Hellbent Southern Gent.” He has been featured on Comedy Central and recently released “One Sick Puppy,” the latest of many comedy CD’s on iTunes. McGrew also hosts two popular podcasts, “Remasculate” and “Wrinkled.” As if that is not enough success, McGrew has opened shows for many rock and country artists and holds 3 Country Music Awards. Do not miss out on this fundraiser that will have you laughing until you fall off your chair as well as benefit the purchase and training of K9 officers that, in the long run, can save lots of lives. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at boxoffice.tamu.edu or K9s4Cops.org.

oatmeal cookies
Football season is back, and it is time, once again, for Aggieland to come together and show some support for our favorite football team. I’ll admit, I’m no football aficionado. I have an attention span that lasts about as long as my three year old daughter’s, and I was never really the “sporty” type to begin with. But never-the-less, I sure do love football season.
Maybe it has something to do with the time of year, when Texas transitions out of the heat of the summer and into the cool fall months. Maybe it’s the fact that I live in a college town, the home of the Fight’n Texas Aggies, and, as the new season nears, a buzz of excitement begins to circulate through the city. The whole town paints itself in spirit, garbed in our alma mater’s colors -- maroon and white. This year, I am excited to present football friends with my newest rendition of an oatmeal cookie. As I said before, the whole town is garbed in maroon and white, and the baked goods should serve as no exception. In true Texas A&M spirit, these Aggie cookies are speckled with white chocolate and tart cranberries. Not only are they dressed the part for an Aggie game day, they are a full-on touchdown dessert. The cookie is just the right amount of sweet, with an almost salty-type finish. They are soft, chewy and everything an oatmeal cookie was meant to be. These oatmeal cookies are the perfect game day treat for any football party, but they were especially made for those cheering on the fight’n Texas Aggies! INGREDIENTS 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon fine sea salt 2/3 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs, room temperature 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats 1 cup white chocolate chips 1/2 cup dried cranberries
