BATTLE OF THE SEXES

MOVIE REVIEW The endless competition between men and women was brought to new heights during the rise of the sexual revolution. Taking a step back in 1973, today’s new film “Battle of the Sexes” focuses on the gender conflict between two professional tennis players.

Screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, who was also a screenwriter for Slumdog Millionaire, illustrates the true story of the famous tennis challenge between women’s world champion Billie Jean King and ex-men’s champion Bobby Riggs. This competition was titled the “Battle of the Sexes,” and became one of the most watched televised sports events, setting off a global conversation of gender equality. The cast includes Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs.

career and marriage. Stone plays King as a shy, girly and vulnerable character, who later develops into a highly determined individual. The scene of King’s postgame breakdown in the locker room will trigger viewers’ emotions. Carell adds his own comedic qualities, as he plays the role of a sexist and arrogant serial hustler. In his fight to defeat King, Riggs tussles with his own gambling obsession, similarly risking the loss of his wife and family. The filmmakers incorporate sexist attitudes in this old-school setting to emphasize the perception that society had of women in the past. The continuous struggle for acknowledgement and respect influenced outspoken women like Billie Jean King to spark the rise of the women’s movement.

King was a strong feminist voice for gender equality, and Riggs challenged her to a tennis match that would settle the gender competition. Along with King were other top professional female players, including Rosie Casals, Julie Heldman, Peaches Bartkowicz and others, who created the Virginia Slims women’s pro circuit. In an effort to promote gender equality, these women held press conferences and continued to win tennis matches to gain public support. King embarks on her journey to win equal pay for women in the Virginia Slims circuit and battles to protect her career, all while questioning her own sexuality. As the face of her movement, King has to keep the truth a secret, or else risk her

ALBUM REVIEW

by Jaclyn Ysaquirre

The legacy of rock music continues to roll with time, as bands like the Foo Fighters keep the genre alive and interesting. Former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl lead the group of six (Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shifett and Rami Jaffee) to the top of the Billboard charts with their latest album, “Concrete and Gold.”

ARTIST: Foo Fighters ALBUM: Concrete and Gold RELEASED: Sept. 15, 2017

The American band keeps their new track list consistent with their trademark sound, but they also feature many musical guest appearances, such as Justin Timberlake and Paul McCartney. In their ninth work, the Foo Fighters received musical advice from pop producer Greg Kurstin which helped to incorporate new tones into their anthemic pop-rock, while focusing heavily on their songwriting. One of the album’s songs, “Run,” begins in minimalistic acoustics that then grow into louder, harsh tones that are finally dramatized into raw throated metal. In preparation for their upcoming tour, the Foo Fighters released an animated short film to promote “Concrete and Gold.” The musicians discuss why they selected to work with Kurstin and why they decided to collaborate with other musical celebrities. With their new album outweighing their previous works, some rock and roll lovers are questioning whether it’s possible for a tenth album to live up to the hype.

Stylish Sabi: A Boutique for All “Wear it. Flaunt it. Live it.” - Sabi motto From fashion to home décor, designer jewelry, and shoes, one can’t help but gawk in awe when walking into the Sabi Boutique. The store is a shop-a-holics daydream, with shoes, scarves, glitz and glam lining the walls from floor to ceiling.

6

Now let’s take a look at the three strong willed, inspiring women behind it all. Created by a mother and her two daughters, the Sabi Boutique sets out to alter the status quo of boutique shopping. Janis, Meredith and Natalie set out to change the fashion world of College Station.

An inspiring bible verse inscribed on the store’s main wall, Proverbs 31:25, caught my eye upon my first entering. “She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future.” The rest of the walls are adorned with family photos and a custom-made wooden mural.

“We just felt like there was something missing from the retail world,” Meredith McAuliffe, the eldest of the sisters explained. “Our purpose became to find the things that no one else has, while also staying in tune to style trends. The goal for every day is how can we positively affect someone’s life and put a smile on their face.”

Sabi is an all-inclusive boutique, meaning that they support all differing religions, age demographics, body types, and organizations from philanthropy to non-profits. Every customer, and employee, is valued and treated like family, no matter the differences. Join the Sabi Sisterhood and help to gain grace and confidence through faith and fashion. The Sabi boutique is a place for women to feel comfortable being themselves.

McAuliffe, the primary daughter running the business, sat across from me, her aqua eyes bright and animated as she told me a little about herself. Meredith McAuliffe is the only non-Aggie founder, and an Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist. I found myself quite curious as to what took this woman from a writing career to high-end retail. McAuliffe told me that she was the lead anchor of KBTX for 8 years, and, although she was happy and

MAROON WEEKLY // Sept. 27, 2017 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

thankful for her job, she just felt that there was still a different purpose out there for her. After McAuliffe and her husband, also a professional journalist, found out that they were expecting their first child, Ireland, everything began to change. With her husband traveling across the state and writing for the Texas Bucket List, McAuliffe knew she needed to be there for her family. “Sabi offers a little bit more of a flexible schedule, and I really want to be there to help shape Ireland and Declan’s lives,” McAuliffe, the loving mother, professed with a smile. Now I’m sure you’re all wondering where the name Sabi even comes from? Crinkling her eyes, McAuliffe gave a small chuckle as she explained the story behind it all. McAuliffe’s mother, cofounder “Queen” Janis Stancik, is a seasoned fashionista and has always had a passion for fashion. Stancik used to run a clothing store in La Grange, up until her parents became ill. Faced with hardship, Stancik selflessly chose to leave the store and care for them. Stancik has always had a fierce love of

spicy wasabi peas, and she was never interested in being a regular old “Grandma.” So, when she learned she was going to be a grandmother, Queen Janis Stancik adopted the title of Sabi, in honor of her love of spicing things up. From business to play, Sabi is here to stay. And although she is not running the operations regularly at the store, Queen Sabi does pop in every week to share her warmth. Younger sister Natalie Wood also worked at the store for years, until she got married and moved to Washington. Since the move, Wood has actually started her own jewelry line, Natalie Wood Designs, which is sold at the boutique. When asked about the possibility of expansion, McAuliffe said that the Sabi boutique is unsure of God’s exact plans for them, so they do not know if they will be expanding their storefronts anytime soon. She explained to me that as of right now, they are focusing on putting an emphasis on Sabi’s online store and in-store pickup. Sabi’s current storefront is located in the Wolf Pen Creek retail center. This spunky store merrily welcomes customers from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Although the store is closed on Sundays

for religious reasons, there is still 24/7 access to the online boutique! All online items include free shipping, and Sabi offers free in-store pickup. As of right now, with every in-store pickup, customers will also receive a $5 gift card to use on a different purchase. The online boutique is quite extensive, with so many different on-trend and unique options. Another cool feature of the website is that all of the models displayed in Sabi attire have their sizes listed, so that women can ensure that they find the best fit for them. With hundreds of designers to choose from, the stylish options are seemingly endless. This shop is filled with 20 part-time college women. McAuliffe confided in me that she loves to hire college students, because she knows she can positively influence them and help give back. She hopes to prepare them for the real world, by giving students a flexible schedule, offering guidance and providing them with a home away from home. The family atmosphere is very important to the Sabi Sisterhood, and everyone, whether friend, employee or even stranger, is invited in and treated like family. “We hope Sabi becomes a place of comfort,” McAuliffe proclaimed. “Women need to be empowered and feel good about themselves”.

THE NIGHT CIRCUS BY ERIN MORGENSTERN

In the late years of the 19th century, Le Cirque des Reves appears out of nowhere, always without warning, and open only at sundown. The show travels between Europe and North America, and no one can ever be certain when it will appear next, or for how long. The Circus of Dreams, it is called. The name seems to be a perfect fit for this mysterious and alluring circus, but if only everyone knew how deep the secrets go. Inside of the circus is the secret setting for a contest between two extraordinary illusionists, Marco and Celia. But neither of them knows, at first, who their opponent is, or the exact nature of this challenge that was promised in their childhood. All that has been told to the two is that this contest has been coming for some time. Each grew up in the world of illusions and bewitchment, and each has been branded and bound to one another. As the circus continues to enchant, and tricks continue to fool, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love. But as the consequences of the game become more clear, the two must decide whether or not they can pursue their love without destroying the circus - or each other. Erin Morgenstern’s “The Night Circus” is a rich and dreamy tale of wonder and thwarted love. There is a musicality to the way Morgenstern writes that leaves you with the sensations of the starlight and the intoxicating aroma of caramel apples. It will keep you up at night, wondering if magic is more dangerous than Disney has led you to believe. by Hannah Pena

PAT GREEN AT HURRICAN HARRY’S PAT GREEN SEPT. 29TH DOORS OPEN @ 9PM by Azalea Andrade

We are in Texas, and, naturally, a lot of us love for country music, specifically Texas country. Well, you can feed your country needs with Pat Green at Hurricane Harry’s on Friday, September 29th. The San Antonio native has big shoes to fill if he hopes to live up to his own success. With more than 2 million albums sold, Pat Green has had three Grammy nominations and has toured with huge stars like Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban. Although he had a record label sign him, the pressure of being too perfect was too much. Therefore, he became an independent artist. Green recently released his hit album, “Home,” and the title says it all. It is a tribute to fans that have been with him since the start. Because of his hardship with the record label, Green wanted to go back to his comfort zone, which allowed him to express himself better than he ever thought he could. Green’s new album consists of thirteen touching and loving songs. They are slow country numbers that justify the name of the album. The album itself tells the story of his crazy ride while being among the big names and how he feels so much better to be back “Home.” Pat Green started to love music at a young age, and while at Texas Tech he started performing at bars and other kinds of venues. If he has not sounded impressive enough, while committed to his musical career, Green attracted the attention of Willie Nelson. That’s right, Shotgun Willie loved Green’s sound so much that Green first appeared at his 4th of July picnic. Shortly after, he started getting lots of national recognition. Hurricane Harry’s is the place to be, to hear some of Pat Green’s soothing voice. Doors open at 9 p.m. For more information visit, and to purchase your tickets, visit http://harrys.bcsclubs.com/events/

> INTERSECTIONS AT THE SEAD GALLERY SEAD Gallery and Bookshop, located in Bryan, is presenting a new and exciting art show called “Intersections.” This will be the gallery’s first juried fiber arts show, featuring the best fiber arts that Texas has to offer. SEAD, an acronym standing for Science, Engineering, Art, and Design is a juried art gallery, community space, and events venue featuring regular exhibits by local, state, and international artists. For those of us unfamiliar with the work, fiber art is a medium in which the artist uses natural or synthetic fiber, as well as other

components like yarn or wool, to sew or weave a piece that focuses on a particular memory or idea that is unique to the artist. All it takes is a single fiber material or fiber technique to be present for the piece to fall under the category of fiber art. While there is contemporary fiber art that is associated with materiality and technique, at its core, fiber art is just like any other medium and offers observations, themes, and concepts to explore. For this showing, there will be a guest juror, Amie Adelman, who is an associated professor and fibers coordinator at the University of North Texas. Adelman has been conducting research on textiles in

Q Brothers

by Hannah Pena & Jaclyn Ysaquirre

“O Q Brothers, Q Brothers wherefore art thou, Q Brothers?” Attention all Verona-loving, Shakespeare-adoring classics enthusiasts, the Q Brothers are here and ready to revamp your world with their fresh twist on Shakespeare’s play “The Two Gentlemen of Verona.” There’s nothing like a good Shakespeare play, to remind us all that, even in this modernized day and age, the classics never go out of style. Though they never fade, some classics can be morphed into something a little more fresh, a little more original, and a whole lot more rap-tastic. The Q Brothers have been at work for nearly 20 years writing plays and musicals. They deliver a twist on classic works by portraying them in modern contexts, all while staying true to the original story. Staying true to the original author’s work, but delivering it with a twenty-first century take, is the Q Brothers’ way of making these timeless acts more accessible to audiences today. The co-creators of Q Bros, GQ and JQ, are comedic hip hop actors that direct and star in their original productions of classic plays told through modern day hip hop. The brothers have invented their own genre of what they call, “Add-Rap-Tations,” in which they create plays in rhyme and perform over authentic music played by a deejay.

“Q Gents”

Performances are always better live, and the Q Brothers are no exception. Their role on stage is forever changing, their character never just one, and their script never dull. To truly witness the creative magic that is in every one of their shows, a clip on Youtube is not sufficient. Seeing these two brothers in person is an experience that would not be soon forgotten.

Oct. 4 | 7pm | Rudder Theatre

The brothers will perform their play, “Q Gents,” which is their interpretation of Shakespeare’s work, “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” The two gentlemen in Shakespeare’s play, Proteus and Valentine, are friends that are both in love with the Duke of Milan’s daughter Silvia. Proteus is Julia’s lover at the beginning of the play, until he falls in love with Silvia and attempts to steal her away from Valentine.

The Q Brothers reimagine this play in a high school setting, with allusions to the 80s high school movies that audiences are familiar with. The Q Gents version of the story focuses on a modern Proteus and Valentine, who are football stars at Verona College Prep. Their hip-hop adaptation includes a 75 minute performance of over twenty characters, that are all played by the two brothers. The Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts at Texas A&M University will host the Q Bros on Wednesday, October 4 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Rudder Theatre. All seating is general admission with $5 student tickets and $7 regular tickets for non-students.

This is the inaugural year for this film tour, and organizers hope that it will get big enough to expand to more cities, according to Hillary Pierce, the producer of the films. “We’ve already added two stops to the tour this year that we weren’t originally planning to do and have also received a great deal of interest in cities for the next leg. So we expect to take it to more cities next year,” Pierce said. Filmmaker and conservationist Ben Masters will be hosting the event. Ben Masters has had a long run with conservation, specifically of wild horses. He is an expert in the field, and hearing from him will be a great chance to be well informed. The event will also feature the actors, cameramen and women, photographers, anglers, outdoorsman, and wildlife enthusiasts for those interested in talking to them. These people are professionals and knowledgeable in their field, so they can answer any questions that you might have. Different issues are covered during these films, including the population restoration of the pronghorn and bison, mountain lion predation and populations on private and public land, and how construction of a border wall might affect a variety of species. “Outside of wildlife, the films we are showing also cover land and water conservation efforts. Each short film is specific to an issue, but sometimes they do overlap,” Pierce said. This film tour was started in hopes of creating more awareness of the conservation of wildlife and to reach a broader audience. It is a great and entertaining way to get the message across, and Pierce believes that it will draw more attention to the issues. This attention could hopefully result in more financial and public support of the research and work being done. The profits made from this tour will be used for future film budgets, tour iterations, and conservation efforts that the film team takes part in. For this tour specifically, during the screening, a silent auction will be held in hopes of raising money for Hurricane Harvey. “We know our audiences care deeply about these issues and want to learn more, so we will do our best to continue spreading awareness, while also doing our best to care for our beautiful state and fellow Texans during a tough time,” said Pierce. The event is made possible by YETI, Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation, Stewards of the Wild, Borderlands Research Institute, King Land & Water, and Epic Provisions. If you love film and wildlife, or just want to find out more about what you can do, do not forget to come out to Rudder Theater. Doors open at 6:30pm and screening begins at 7:30pm.

SEE

BANNED BOOKS WEEK by Azalea Andrade

at LARRY J. RINGER LIBRARY

As a kid, you might have read many books that may not have deemed appropriate for your age, without even thinking about it. Well, some of those books have been challenged or banned across the country. Banned Books Week is an annual celebration of the freedom to read. This usually happens the last week of September nationwide, and this year it is from September 24 thru the 30th. This year, the American Library Association will focus on the First Amendment, which guarantees our right to read. The process for challenging or banning a book can be a little tricky and complicated, but Hilary Crowder, an Adult Reference Librarian at Larry J. Ringer Library, broke it down into simpler terms. “A book that is challenged means that someone writes a complaint about a book, but that does not mean that it will be banned. Books that are challenged are taken up by the American Library Association. Usually for libraries, we have more of a fighting chance for that book not to get banned,” Crowder said. Parents are the ones that usually challenge these books. Some of the most common reasons for a challenge being, magic, racism, homosexuality, graphic sex, vulgar language, graphic violence, substance abuse, and religious irreverence. Challenges do not

simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library. Books have been challenged in classrooms or libraries, and our libraries want to make people aware that it happens. The majority of the books being challenged are children’s books or teen books that are not appropriate at the level at which they are marketed. Some of the books on display at Larry J. Ringer Library seem very innocent, such as “Bless Me, Ultima,” “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Anne Frank’s Diary,” “James and the Giant Peach,” and “Captain Underpants.” “Each issue is managed locally, but the American Library Association takes a look at each complaint and goes from there. Each book challenged is taken up locally as well, and, if that book were to be banned, it would just be banned from the specific library and nowhere else,” Crowder said. This year’s motto is “Books Have Power.” Our freedom of speech is threatened when people decide to challenge or ban a book, so let us come together and celebrate the freedom to read. For more information check out http://www.bcslibrary.org/events/?mc_ id=7811 or simply walk into the library closest to you to see the banned books.

HARVESTED ALIVE: by Madison Caldwell

The Ten Year Search For The Truth Behind Organ Harvesting Dissected. Sold. Discarded. Every year, millions of people are exhausted of their every resource, all because of their religious beliefs and the unfair rejection they face from China’s Communist regime. From their corneas to their livers and kidneys, these captured and imprisoned Falun Gong prisoners have their organs harvested, all while they are still breathing. Dr. Zhiyuan Wang tells us their stories in his new film “Harvested Alive.” After ten years of intensive investigation and research, with 95% of the evidence in the film coming directly from China itself, Dr. Wang came to the startling realization that, since the early 2000s, Falun Gong believers have been seized by the Chinese government and used for forced organ harvesting. Falun Gong is a Chinese spiritual practice that combines elements of Buddhism and Taoism, and believers have been persecuted by the Chinese government since 1999. Dr. Wang had a 30-year career in aviation medicine, but it wasn’t until March 9, 2006, when he was watching TV, that his life’s purpose forever became abundantly clear. After watching a report over the supposed organ harvesting, Wang set out to investigate the persecution of Falun Gong believers. He had to figure out the truth, even if revealing everything was seemingly inconceivable.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that certain hospitals operated as part of a chain, connecting the government and police department to the prisoners. Within the past six years alone, the annual liver transplants in China have increased thirty fold. Falun Gong practitioners’ organs are inhumanely harvested, and then these citizens are thrown into the incinerators that are located in most Chinese hospital boiler rooms. Discarded like trash, not a trace of their identity is left to be buried or mourned. All Bryan-College Station residents, community leaders, medical professionals, professors or students, are urged to attend this free documentary screening and participate in an open discussion following the film with the film’s award-winning director Jun Li. Open your mind, let the mist of ignorance and naivety fade, and come learn about the reality of exploitation facing millions. “We are calling all kind-hearted people to attend this event to learn the facts about this 18-plus years of horrific crime against humanity and what we can do to help end it,” stated Jadelin Nguyen, a Biomedical Engineering student at TAMU. Please join us on Thursday Sept. 28th at 7 p.m., in Rudder Tower 301, in respect and remembrance of those fallen to this unjust massacre.

DELI-STYLE

ROAST BEEF SANDWICHES

Poor deli roast beef. Sometimes it seems, of all the cold cuts, poor roast beef is often left out in the…well…cold. But, I’m here to say, you can turn deli roast beef into something truly amazing. First of all, it’s beef. So there’s that. Second of all, beef can stand up to some pretty loud and exciting flavors, meaning we can get pret-ty crazy when it comes to topping our sandwich. In fact, I don’t think it would be too much of a stretch to say this is going to be a bit of a gourmet sandwich, but don’t let that scare you off. It’s the toppings that are going to make it fancy, not the technique.
