MOVIE REVIEW Playing one of the greatest and prominent figures of the Civil Rights Movement, actor Chadwick Boseman leads the role of the first black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court in the new film “Marshall.” After starring in “42” as Jackie Robinson and “Get On Up” as James Brown, Boseman finds himself in his third biographical movie, this time portraying the life of Thurgood Marshall.

starring chadwick boseman by Jaclyn Ysaquirre

Baltimore native and grandson of a former slave, Thurgood Marshall grew up with an appreciation for the United States Constitution and the practice of law. After high school, he followed his brother’s footsteps and attended the historically black Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. To further his higher education, Marshall applied to the University of Maryland Law School, but he was denied admission because of his race. This personal experience of discrimination in education ignited a passion in Marshall that directed him to his professional career. Following law school at Howard University, Marshall became Chief Counsel for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and he began to investigate cases related to racial discrimination. The growth of Marshall’s career began when he landed a significant pre-racialintegration court case that would challenge his judicial skills. This biopic takes place in 1941, when Marshall and attorney partner Sam Friedman, played by Josh Gad, defend a black male chauffeur accused by his white female employer of sexual assault and attempted murder. Film director Reginald Hudlin recreates the courtroom scene with Kate Hudson as the plaintiff, Eleanor Strubing, and Sterling K. Brown as the black chauffeur, Joseph Spell, in this drama of racial injustice.

ALBUM REVIEW

Think powerful, influential, and inspiring. Think the type of music that Morgan Freeman might read your epilogue to. Yeah, that epic.

by Madison Caldwell

This music makes you sway to the rhythm of your own heart. ODESZA’s third album, released Sept. 8, might just be their greatest. “A Moment Apart” fails to disappoint, as this electronic duo from Seattle dazzles listeners once again with sixteen awesome tracks.

ARTIST: Odesza ALBUM: A Moment Apart RELEASED: Sept. 8, 2017

Filled with a multitude of instruments and chilling, melodic women’s vocals, these beautiful songs are the kind of music that has you swaying your head and tapping your foot on instinct. This extremely chill and mellow album really entices you to think (while also kind of making you want to dance around the kitchen). These tracks will tug at your subconscious, a blessing to caress your senses. It is truly an album to cradle your mind. Humor me, and check out ODESZA’s newest album for yourself.

Aggie football season is in full force. We are now into SEC play and I am loving every minute of it! I truly enjoy everything about college football season. The excitement that is brought to campus, the tailgates that bring Aggies and opponents together and the fightin’ Texas Aggie spirit that fills the air when we hear “We are Live. It’s Time” at Kyle Field minutes before kickoff. I also love seeing the game day fashion and how everyone approaches their perfect game day look. Let’s be honest, football is important, but looking our best on game days is essential. I have rounded up some of my favorite game day looks that will leave you with a win: 1 We all know those afternoon games in Texas can be a beating. Looking good in the southern heat is no easy task. Because of this, I sometimes go with a cute Aggie or SEC tee. You can jazz it up by adding some jewelry, wearing it with a skort (which are VERY in this season) or rocking some high waisted shorts and converse. You’ll feel comfortable and look great while tailgating and cheering on your team! I f2 you’re wanting to dress up a little bit, a skirt and cute top is the perfect way to go. I’ve seen so many girls wearing jean skirts and tops to games this season! I love this maroon skirt + lace top combo. Again, it is a great option to keep cool while looking your best. 3

Don’t own a lot of maroon clothing? No worries! When I run out of maroon options, my go-to is something black or white paired with maroon jewelry. Because maroon is a very popular color for the season, finding maroon jewelry shouldn’t be hard. Accessorize your look with maroon earrings or a necklace and you’re good to go. 4

Now that you’re dressed to impress on the field, it’s time to cheer on the Ags as they BTHO Bama this weekend. P.S. - you can always rock a jersey like Maggz and still look fabulous. For more inspiration check out @Maggz_to_Riches on Instagram or MaggztoRiches.com

a tale as old as time:

beauty and the beast It’s a tale as old as time in the Brazos Valley, as “Beauty And The Beast” hits the stage. Get ready to say hello to some of your favorite magical characters and see enchantments come to life, as “Beauty And The Beast” sings its way through Oct. 6 to 22, at The Theater Company, Brazos Valley’s premier home of musical theatre. The Broadway version of the Disney classic first came to life at the Hobby Center in Houston, TX, before it took off to theatres nationwide, becoming a fan favorite. Since then, “Beauty And The Beast” has become an international sensation, playing in 13 countries, for over 35 million people.

by Hannah Pena

Hoffman, this broadway rendition of “Beauty And The Beast” is sure to make Walt Disney and the original creators of the broadway production immensely proud. Get on down to The Theatre Company, and fill your October with pumpkins, Aggie football, and Disney.

Disney’s animated film features an Academy-award winning score, with music written by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman. The creators of this particular Broadway version are aiming for nothing short of spectacular, and they have the team to pull it off. Directed by Adrienne Dobson and produced by John Greene, the show will feature Berkley Jones as our young heroine, Belle, as she begins her tale of adventure. The tale begins with Belle, a young woman trapped in a provincial town, and the Beast, played by Paul Early, who is really a young prince cursed by an enchantress. If the Beast is able to learn how to love and to be loved, the spell will be broken, and he will return to his former self. But time is running out for the Beast. If he does not learn his lesson, then he has doomed himself and his household for eternity. The cast is not complete without favorites like Lumiere (Roger Pine), Mrs. Potts (Amy Henss), and the villain you can’t forget, Gaston (Scott Mills), as well as many more who are joining this talented crew. Choreographed by Ellen Wilcox and with music direction by Chris

BOOK REVIEW

IT BY STEPHEN KING

Welcome to Derry, Maine…Stephen King thrills us once again with his classic and haunting bestseller “It,” which is now showing in theatres. This New York Times bestseller is no children’s bedtime story. It is their nightmare. Seven adults have returned to their hometown after leaving it behind as teenagers. They each have a new city, a new life, and no new terrors. That is, until they are once again home and are faced with the same nameless nightmare they met once before... It. It’s been twenty-eight years since the seven friends made a promise. Twenty-eight years since they each left home to become someone else. Now that very promise is pulling them back to face, once again, the same evil creature who preys on the city’s children. Children are being murdered. Memories the seven had repressed so well are coming back to the surface, threatening to reappear as they prepare for battle yet once more with the monster that dwells in Derry’s sewers. Stephen King is no stranger to thrillers, but I certainly am. Reading “It” is not for the fainthearted. It is disturbing and chilling. It will keep you up at night, terrified to turn the light off. “It” will have you staying clear of all sewers and dark rooms for some time. This kind of book stays with you. It will haunt you. It will leave your heart pumping, dreading the next page. Are the nervous glances around the house worth it? Read “It” and find out. by Hannah Pena

JOSH ABBOTT BAND at WOLF PEN CREEK

JOSH ABBOTT BAND OCT 6TH w/ KOE WETZEL by Azalea Andrade

The entertainment never stops in the BCS area. On October 6th, 2017, Josh Abbott Band will be performing at Wolf Pen Creek with Koe Wetzel for the “Gamma Phi Beta Crescent Classic.” The event is organized by this sorority as their philanthropy event, and all proceeds go to Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that aims to inspire young girls through a creative running curriculum. Originating in Lubbock, TX, in 2006, Josh Abbott Band is a Texas country band made up of five members. Main vocalist Josh Abbott started the band while in college at Texas Tech, and they eventually released their first single “Scapegoat” in 2009. Their most recent album, “Until My Voice Goes Out,” is a raw and heartfelt album, where Josh Abbott opens up about the pain he underwent when his father passed away. Of course, you still have your fun country numbers on this album to get you dancing, but, overall, the album is an open reflection on Abbott’s life so far as well as

meditations on what the future will bring. Koe Wetzel is an East Texas native based out of Stephenville, TX. The group is composed of five members, who pride themselves on their rock ‘n’ roll mixed with Texas country style. Their latest album, “Noise Complaint,” released in February 2016, is an upbeat mix of country and Americana, with a hint of rock ‘n’ roll. You can expect an amazing performance by these two awesome bands, as well as other entertainment. There will be food trucks with plenty of food available for purchase, including Napa Flats, Steel City Pops and Boots Beverages. A silent auction and a raffle will be taking place throughout the event. Come out to the Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater at 6:30 p.m., with some chairs and blankets to lay out, and enjoy an evening of great country. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online

D’Vine cuisine an Aggie owned catering company operating in the Brazos Valley by Hannah Pena

Everyone adores a good love story. You hear about two people meeting, falling for each other, and what follows are all the common little details that begin to blur in your mind. Well, there’s a new love story in town, and this one centers around food. After all, the quickest way to the heart is through the stomach. Billy and Kantessa Castillo have had love in their hearts and food on their minds ever since they can remember. The two met while attending college, right here at Texas A&M, and, even then, cooking was always a focus in their life. Their business, D’Vine Cuisine, is their testament to that. Billy has always been a chef. In college, he would invite his friends over for homework and a meal, and he would end the day surrounded by his closest friends, piles of homework, and memories to add to his vault. Laughter and dreams have always been key elements in the lives of Bill and Kantessa. Plenty of those memories have been made around a dining room table with loved ones, making up plans and creating everlasting bonds. The two began D’Vine Cuisine in an effort to make foods that will inspire friendships, create memories and have a overall memorable impression. D’Vine Cuisine, located in Bryan, Texas, is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will cater just about any event from business to

personal, intimate to luxurious, comfortable to formal. Whatever the event may be, D’Vine Cuisine will bring their spectacular attention to detail and quality. D’Vine Cuisine offers a wide variety of menus and foods for you to pick from. There is a wedding menu, which features anything from a Rustic Caprese Salad to Roasted Pork Loin with Soy Honey Glaze; a Corporate Events menu with your choice of five salads, entrees, including a vegetarian option, vegetables, and desserts; a breakfast-brunch menu with classics such as Chicken and Waffles, as well as Breakfast Tacos; and an hors d’oeuvres menu, with an assortment of mouth watering foods. Also special this month, DC is hosting a supper club. Supper club is the chef’s opportunity to step outside of catering and indulge in a unique dining experience that will be sure to blow minds- and taste buds. This month’s theme is Oktoberfest, a 4 course meal that will take place Friday Oct. 6, 6:30pm-9:30pm. The price for Oktoberfest evening is $50, but the price for a new experience and an evening of laughter and food? Priceless. If you’re looking for your next food sensation, D’Vine Cuisine is the perfect place to try out. Their foods are classic and will have your taste buds yearning for more. And what’s better than two Aggies who fell in love and opened their own business, a catering business no less, because good food makes the world go round and hearts less lonely.

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS

> AUSTIN CITY LIMITS a quick guide to ACL Oh Austin City Limiters, where do I even begin? Well, for the true Rookies, let me first of all welcome you to the self-proclaimed live music capital of the world and to probably one of the most spectacular weekends of your lives. Also allow me to give you a briefing of some of the history of ACL, before I give you (for free might I add) the insider survival tips. The festival, first founded in 2002, began as a one weekend extravaganza. Over the years, as both the city of Austin and the number of music festival attendees grew, the fun has been expanded to the two action packed weekends of Oct. 6-8 and Oct. 13-15! This year, the infamous Zilker Park has even rearranged their staging placements so that they can produce better sound, improve crowd flow and reduce sound bleeding, all while facilitating eight badass stages for over 140 artists to rock out on. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world flock to the city known for breakfast tacos, craft beer, outdoor fun and weirdos to celebrate and honor music performed the way it should be. This year will be no different, with big name headliners such as Jay-Z, Red Hot Chili Peppers,

by Madison Caldwell

Chance the Rapper and Ice Cube, as well as a first ever ACL Silent Disco (trust me it’s rad). Bigger and badder than ever, the fest features a whole new air conditioned merch tent, an additional ACL Eats area (which features gluten and vegan friendly options*) and an all new ACL Wine Tent! From reds and whites to rosés and bubblies, you can come sip, savor, and socialize with wines from around the world. Mark my words, these could be the best three days of your lives, with seemingly endless treats, beats and unexpected meets. Beginning when the Star Wars Anthem is blasted throughout the grounds, the park gates open promptly at 11 a.m. Most people don’t actually start showing up until later in the afternoon, so if you aren’t a big crowd person, or if you just don’t want to have to park miles away, coming early is a great bet for having a chill, full day. Also, whether you are parking, biking, walking, teleporting or carpooling (which I suggest), make sure to have all of that planned out before the actual festival. Traffic is crazy, cell service is spotty, and quite honesty drunk people are everywhere so pick a location to meet up in case anyone gets lost so that you all can stay safe and travel together.

14 MAROON WEEKLY // Oct. 4, 2017 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS s far as survival gear goes, here are the do’s and don’ts of the game. Do bring something to hold liquid in, because dehydration is very common and no fun. Also, no this does not mean a heavy Yeti or non-environment friendly plastic water bottle. Either invest in a Camelbak day pack, which incidentally also works as a lightweight backpack, or bring my personal fav, which are collapsible refillable water bottles. Most of them come with clips attached, they are lightweight, and you can fill them up at any of the complimentary water stations within the park. A small backpack or fanny pack is preferable so that you can store the essentials, such as hand sanitizer, a phone charging cord, pony tail holders, sunscreen (Just do it!), and either a hat or sunglasses. I also always suggest to bring cash. Even though cards are taken almost everywhere, and the fest actually has wristbands that you can hook your card up to so you can go cardless, you should still just take

COLLEGE STA TION 24 10 S Tex as A v e. Nex t t o St ein Mar t ( 9 79 ) 20 4 -6 26 4 OPEN 7 DA YS A W EEK! Sund ay 11-6 Mo nd ay t o Sat ur d ay 10 -9

the precaution. The machines are sometimes sketchy, and coming from someone who has bartended at ACL multiple times, sometimes the cash is just easier. And wear comfortable shoes. Because as much fun as it is to dress like a hipster hippie queen, at the end of the day you are going to be hot, sweaty, and miserable. Save the glitz and glam for when you aren’t rocking out for three solid days. Allergy meds will be your little happy pills for the weekend, and I would suggest bringing some, even if you don’t think you’ll need any. And last but not least, bandanas help with keeping out the dust. Trust me, you’ll thank me later. From jazz to pop, rap, country and rock, the music tinged air of Austin is going to be alive with good vibes these two October weekends. Austin City Limits is designed with anyone and everyone in mind. Come on out and find yourself through music. Keep Austin weird Y’all. Whoop!

The Backyard on Northgate welcomes everyone out to their post-game party, which includes a live performance from The Powell Brothers. This Houston based band is lead by brothers Taylor Powell on vocals Blake Powell on lead guitar. Their songs incorporate a mix of country and Americana, with elements from blues, jazz and rock. The Powell Brothers mold a unique rhythmic blend with their in-depth lyrics. Their originality is best expressed through their well-crafted songwriting, which gets audiences thinking. The Powell Brothers opened shows for some of country music’s biggest stars, including Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakum, Josh Turner, Gary Allen, Granger Smith, and Mark Chesnutt, to name a few. 2017 has been a breakout year for The Powell Brothers. The band partnered with Major League Baseball and ESPN events for a series of stadium performances at some of MLB and NCAA football’s most exciting games, including the 2017 Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma and the 2017 Las Vegas Bowl. The group performs regularly at legendary Texas dance halls Gruene Hall and Luckenbach, and saw its first two radio singles “Four Wheel Hotel” and “Evangeline” both crack the Top 40. The band is currently promoting their latest release ‘Introducing…The Powell Brothers.’ The EP was co-produced by Taylor Powell, Blake Powell, and Dusty Saxton, who is the drummer for Granger Smith, and features five richly constructed, original tracks. The new single “Evangeline” continues to gain popularity as the brothers embark on their Texas music tour. The Powell Brothers’ College Station performance will take place after the Aggie football game, from 9 p.m. to midnight, on Saturday, October 7.

Yoga and hops at Blackwater Draw Brewing Company

If you like yoga and drinking some beer, this is the perfect event for you. Located in Downtown Bryan, the Aggie owned and operated Blackwater Draw Brewing Company holds an event called “Yoga and Hops” every second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. As odd as that sounds, “Yoga and Hops” really does incorporate both yoga and beer. This event is much more than just sharing a beer with people in your community after a yoga session. “Yoga and Hops” likes to invite the community to come together and enjoy a fun and vibrant environment. After breaking a sweat for an hour, the beer is ready to be drank. Beer is also a great post-workout recovery drink because it is naturally high in antioxidants, and hops are rich in healthful anti-inflammatory polyphenols. Before registering online or showing up as a walk-in, there are a few important things to note. You do have to be 21 in order to drink at the event, but you do not have to be 21 to attend. If you are asking yourself whether you have to be experienced in yoga in order to go, the answer is no. The instructors are there to teach everyone at different levels. This is a great way to unwind after a busy day and make some new friends in the process. You will also be supporting a local business, which is always a great thing to do. Who would have thought beer after a yoga session could be so relaxing as well as good for your body? Join Blackwater Draw Brewing Company for an afternoon of relaxation and fun. Any unanswered questions you might still have can be found on the FAQs page of the Yoga and Hops website https://yogaandhops.com/faq/.

Piada Italian Street Food Opening in College Station

by Azalea Andrade

The authentic taste of Italy is coming to College Station, with the opening of Piada Italian Street Food on October 10, 2017, at 10:45 a.m. This restaurant will be featuring great Italian foods that you cannot miss and will be conveniently located on University Drive. What started off as an insignificant idea for two chefs during a visit to Rimini, Italy, soon became a phenomenon of a restaurant that the public grew to love. The exquisite tastes these chefs found while enjoying their food in Italy was indescribable, and it inspired the two to create an entirely new restaurant. The first Piada Italian Street Food opened up in 2010, and the company has grown to include nearly 40 locations. Their vision was to create great Italian food with simplistic cooking, while not sacrificing quality for speed. From piadas, a type of stuffed flatbread, to more familiar pastas and salads, Piada Italian Street Food has a variety of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan friendly options. There is a little bit of everything for everyone.

I am an advocate for “homemade is best,” and this recipe is no exception. Bacon Cheddar Ranch Dip is an addictively delicious dip, and it begins with panseared bacon, so right off the bat, we can be assured, this recipe’s a keeper.

Method: In a medium-sized saute pan over medium heat, saute the bacon until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside on a paper towel to absorb the excess grease.

Using real bacon, rather than minced up, store-bought bacon bits not only gives the dip a great deal more flavor, but also texture. Bacon pan-seared at home still has a little crunch to it, and the quality far exceeds the rubbery, artificial flavors of store-bought bacon bits. On to the cheese: If you have never grated your own cheese, now is a great time to start. You will taste the difference in freshly grated cheese, versus the pre-packaged stuff. Pre-packaged cheese is coated with wax to keep the cheese from clumping and molding, and it affects the flavor. Using block Cheddar cheese, freshly grated, yields a great deal more flavor, and again, texture.

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, minced garlic, chives, vinegar, hot sauce, dill, salt, onion powder and cayenne. Fold in the bacon and Cheddar cheese, reserving a small pinch of each for garnish (if desired). Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish and serve along side your favorite potato chips and enjoy!

The homemade ranch base is easier than one might think: It begins with sour cream and mayonnaise. Dried seasonings like dill and onion powder give it that signature ranch flavor, as well as fresh ingredients like minced garlic and snipped chives. The bacon and Cheddar are folded into the base, and that’s all there is to it! Folks, I kid you not, pulling yourself away from the bowl will prove to be a difficult and arduous task. This Bacon Cheddar Ranch Dip is perfect for game day parties...or pretty much any gathering. Real, fresh ingredients set this version apart from the rest, and you and your guests will taste and love the difference. Please, enjoy. Ingredients: 6 slices thick-cut bacon, diced 1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup mayonnaise 2 cloves of garlic, minced 1 tablespoon freshly minced chives, plus extra for garnish, if desired 1 teaspoon tarragon or white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon hot sauce 1 teaspoon dried dill 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon onion powder Pinch of cayenne pepper 1 1/2 cup freshly grated Cheddar cheese
