KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE by Madison Caldwell
MOVIE REVIEW
“Kingsman: The Golden Circle” is a typical comedic action flick, in that it contains all of the elements that would be expected: drugs, nudity, and language, as well as a handful of sexual, political, and just plane strange innuendos thrown into the mix. This movie was fast paced, action packed, somewhat emotionally abrupt and random.
The surprisingly well-received first “Kingsman” movie, which came out in 2015, was based off of the Kingsman comic book. The sequel does show more empathy towards loss of human life than its predecessor. However, this slick, violent and hilariously unrealistic film still toyed with themes such as excessive drinking, infidelity and recreational drug use.
This sequel deals with familiar action spy movie themes. There is an independent international intelligence agency that operates with a deadly level of discretion, keeping the world safe or something. This storyline develops as two spy agencies, the Kingsman and Statesman, are forced to work together to stop drug queen pin Poppy, who has poisoned a mass supply of recreational drugs. She threatens to kill millions if she doesn’t get her way: the legalization of all drugs.
Big names such as Halle Berry, Julianna Moore, and Channing Tatum make appearances. However, the use of Tatum as a male ingenue in the production is pathetically obvious, as they try to sexualize him in his cowboy boots and tight wife beater. I’ll admit, he made a distracting cowboy (well played producers). However, his character in general was quite dense, and no amount of muscle could hide that. This goofily imaginative movie contains some ludicrous scenes, subplots that go nowhere, and proves to be unnecessarily long, with the closing credits finally rolling after about two and a half hours. The film was entertaining, cheeky and even got a few good chuckles out of me. But all in all, it’s still the same old save the earth plot and rescue the damsel in distress (who, in this case, is the pot smoking Princess Tilde). Sheepishly, I would still give this film a thumbs up because, even though it lacked emotional depth, the flick was still thoroughly entertaining, even for a silly and over the top comedy. “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” has been in theaters since Sep. 22, so if you’re in the mood to laugh at some dry humor and occasionally nasty wit, or watch a lot of spies, robo-dogs and meat grinders cause destruction, then this is the film for you.
ALBUM REVIEW The next SoundCloud breakout artist Sabrina Claudio released her debut full-length
digital mixtape “About Time” on October 5, 2017. Claudio immerses her soul into rhythm and blues with her unique ability to stretch the lyrics in her slow tempo ballads.
by Jaclyn Ysaquirre
“About Time” sets the laid back and late-night mood with her passionate and soothing voice. The 10-track project features her hit songs “Frozen” and “Unravel Me,” which best exemplify her slow but radiant melodies. Claudio offers a tasteful and refreshing style of afrobeat grooves that distinguish her work from other mainstream music.
ARTIST: Sabrina Claudio ALBUM: About Time RELEASED: Oct. 5, 2017
Claudio incorporates modern instrumentals with an upbeat energy to enlighten the setting of her songs. She continues to expand this retro-trip-R&B vibe throughout her album. In this combination, her listeners can detect her classic and romantic attitude in the deep-loving lyrics. Claudio’s bonus song “Belong to You” features rapper 6LACK, who she will join on his “Free 6LACK TOUR,” which runs from October through November.

All 5 Living Former Presidents Coming Together For A Great Cause In celebration of the 20th birthday of the George H. W. Bush Library, Bush Sr. decided not to hold back. He gathered the other four living former presidents, Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, to hold a hurricane relief concert titled “Deep From The Heart: The One America Appeal Concert. The show will take place on October 21, 2017, and it will benefit areas which have been affected by the recent hurricanes. The One America Appeal is an organization formed by the five former presidents in order to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Since the devastation did not stop with one hurricane, the organization has expanded to include areas affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria. This amazing act of kindness will hopefully lead them to raise enough to help many of those in need. The concert will feature various country artists such as Alabama, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen and Cassadee Pope,

among others. Ticket prices range from $30 to $600. MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER
It is officially October, and, while most of us turn our minds to pumpkin spice lattes and putting together last minute costumes, it’s important to remember that October isn’t all spooks and pumpkins. It is also a month of pink ribbons. Throughout the month of October, people are wearing pink ribbons to raise awareness of breast cancer and to stand with the women fighting it. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer type in women, after skin cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that, in 2017 alone, roughly 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed, as well as 63,410 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer, which is the earliest sign of cancer. Join in with The American Cancer Society at the Making Strides Against Cancer walk to help make a difference, as they work to help women detect the earliest stages of cancer. Making Strides Against Cancer walks raise awareness and funds, in order to save lives. The American Cancer Society puts on these walks across the country. Each event is a noncompetitive 3 to 5 mile walk that brings people together, in an effort to make a difference in the life of every woman who has been touched by breast cancer. The event raises money in order to fund research, provide free information and support, and to help women reduce their breast cancer risk or detect it early on. An opening ceremony begins each walk, and there is always post-walk entertainment. The Making Strides event is a celebration of survivors and a chance to remember loved ones. It is a day that is not so easily forgotten. A Making Strides event is happening right here in the Brazos Valley. Come out to Lake Walk Town Center Sunday, Oct. 22, to take part in a monumental and inspiring walk. Registration begins that same day at 12:30 p.m., while the walk takes place at 2 p.m. October is a wonderful month. It is a month of spirit and hayrides, a month of making pies and wearing your coziest sweaters. It is also a month to raise awareness of breast cancer, remember lost loved ones, and to cheer on survivors. It is a month of determination, Autumn scents and pink ribbons.

WEINER FEST at wolf pen creek in college station by Justin Walker
Who is top dog? Aggieland Humane Society will be answering the ageold question on Sunday, October 22, as they host the 2017 Wiener Fest at Wolf Pen Creek in College Station.
ways for man’s best friend to compete, including with man himself in the “Look-a-Like” owner and pet category. Others include “Couples” or dog pairs, “Most Creative” and “Best Dressed Formal.”
Wiener Fest, which started 11 years ago to help raise funds to benefit local homeless pets, serves as Aggieland Humane Society’s largest community event. Kathy Bice, executive director for Aggieland Humane Society, believes Wiener Fest has been a success due to the companionship locals have with their dogs.
Bice believes this year’s event will continue to grow, as in years past.
“I think people really love their pets, and this event solidifies the human-pet bond,” Bice said. This year’s festivities include the fan favorite wiener races. The dachshund-only race of speed and adorableness will headline the day’s events. Dachshunds of all ages, experiences and abilities will have the opportunity to compete. Of course, the wiener dogs will not be the only breed that will battle it out on the race track. The Wanna-Be-A-Wiener race gives every dog a chance to take home the gold, granted they pick on someone their own size in the four weight divisions. Don’t forget to suit up for the canine costume contest! There are four
“People are really proud to compete with their dogs,” Bice said. Wiener Fest attendees, both man and canine, can enjoy music, vendors and a kid zone while soaking in the races. Bice is excited about the live entertainment performing this year. “We will have some unique artists performing,” Bice said. “Some have been seen at livestock shows and rodeos around the state so it’s great to have them here for this event.” Between the live entertainment and the dog races, attendees can visit the vendors for food, treats, and vet services. There will even be a station where the first 100 visitors can get free microchips for their pets. EXCLUSIVE Interview:
AGGIE SURVIVES VEGAS SHOOTING
When a time full of joy, laughter, and good tunes turns into a nightmare, what does one do? How does one react in the face of tragedy? The Route 91 Festival shooting will never be forgotten. The statistics have already been forever ingrained into our minds, and our hearts are already heavy with grief. Our country was shaken by the horrifying events that took place on October 1 the at 4th annual Route 91 Country Music Festival.
everything changed. Some loud popping was heard, but most festival-goers assumed the noise was just random fireworks and continued to enjoy their music-filled evening. But then the screen on the right hand side of the stage suddenly went black, and the lights then all powered out.
Country music lovers showed up in Las Vegas to attend what was supposed to be an awesome festival in a famous city full of wonder and fun. But in Sin City, where anything is possible, a true nightmare was made reality. The deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history shattered the festivities, forever changing the lives of many.
Stephen Paddock, 64, had opened rapid fire from his hotel room on the 32nd floor on a crowd of 22,000 people. Gonzales showed me a map, explaining that the festival was set up like a maze, and that one of the main exits was in direct line of the rapid fire. It seemed to take the crowd about half a minute to register what was happening. Everything turned to slow motion. Caught in the moment, unable to process it all, Gonzales froze. A man ran straight towards her, nearly mowing her over as he knocked past her in a panic. One of her coworkers yelled Gonzales’ name, urging her to come with him. Gonzales dropped her bag and followed the man, acting on instinct and leaving behind all of her personal belongings in the process.
Rachel Gonzales, 21, walked up to me as I was bartending at the Wine Lounge at Austin City Limits this Saturday, looking radiant in her straw sunflower hat and black romper. I was 15 customers deep, wanting to try some of the wine bars’ specialty refreshing frozen sangria or chilled rosé. Rachel patiently waited off to the side until I could break away from the crowd. Appreciative of her patience and out of breath from bartending all day, I smiled at her and dove into the interview, beginning with the obvious: What actually happened out there? Gonzales has been working as a brand ambassador for a multitude of companies since she graduated from Texas A&M in 2017. She was hired for her fourth gig with Budweiser to be a brand ambassador for the Route 91 Festival. On Sunday evening, Oct. 1, her assigned Budweiser station was about 20 yards from the stage. Her job was to take pictures of people in front of a Budweiser sign and to also give out free bandanas. Around 10:08 PM, during the festival’s headlining concert, Jason Aldean,
“Tut-tut-tut-tut-tut-tut-tut-tut-tut”
She was herded into the storage unit of the Budweiser bar on wheels, along with some of the other brand ambassadors. The trailer driver locked them in from the inside, and the six terrified adults sat in darkness and silence, squished amongst the storage unit’s contents, as they listened to the terrifying events unfold just outside. “Those were the longest 20 minutes of my life. We heard screaming just outside, and there was nothing we could do. People were screaming for help, and I remember one woman just sobbing, begging for someone to help her husband who had been shot,” Gonzales said, shuddering. “It just seemed to go on and on and on, until someone nearby the trailer screamed that it was coming this way…”
None of the group shed a tear, as they sat in shock, bracing for the shooting to strike the trailer. Gonzales admitted to me that she was sitting right next to a propane tank, and that she was afraid of what would happen if a bullet were to strike the tank. After what seemed like an eternity, the shooting finally ceased. The group silently unlocked the trailer door and stepped into the aftermath of one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history. Moving fast and trying to keep her eyes down, Gonzales followed the rest of the group, as they made their way out of the U-shaped maze festival, avoiding people stretched out on the ground. Ambulances and stretchers filled with bodies lined the streets on either side of the exit, and Gonzales even recounted seeing a man with a sniper rifle walking past her. The group made their way to a nearby hotel, running into other festival survivors along the way. Gonzales and the Budweiser crew shared an elevator with a couple who had been at the front of the crowd, near the stage. The couple swapped stories with Gonzales and crew, recounting how they made friends with the people around them during the concert. “The enormity of it all didn’t fully hit me until we got

off the Strip and into that elevator,” Gonzales said. “I realized I was surrounded by complete strangers who were so much like myself, because of this lifechanging experience we all shared. The man next to me told me that he had blood on his boots from the couple standing next to them that they had started chatting it up with while waiting for the concert to start. After looking at his boots, I just felt so sick.” This event has forever shaped the way Gonzales plans to live her life, because she feels like she truly understands now how blessed and fortunate she is to even be here. “Life is too short and needs to be lived to the fullest. And, as cliché as it sounds, you never know if your next day will be your last, so live it up” Gonzales said adamantly. “If there’s something that you have a passion for, or something that you want to do, then just do it. The time to live is now.” Although she has been working quite a few shows and festivals since graduation, Gonzales plans to take some time off after Austin City Limits and focus on herself and her passions. Living up to her mantra of life being too short, Gonzales plans to not let this experience bring her down with negative energy and emotions.
The gun control debate is now hotter than ever, and this event has spurred heated arguments about cracking down on gun safety laws around the country. Gonzales even stated that she plans on taking a gun and safety class in the future for precautionary measures. Paddock killed at least 58 people and injured another 546. All the local hospitals early Monday morning were flooded with trauma patients. The fast working first responders and Las Vegas police department deserve put their lives at risk to save wounded victims. Without them, the aftermath and mortality rate would have been much more devastating. The courageous doctors and nurses should also be thanked for their acts of valor and bravery in the face of trauma and tragedy. The nation is in shock, rightfully confused by this pre-orchestrated senseless mass murder. Even the shooter’s family is bewildered, unable to comprehend what happened. As a nation, it is necessary to mourn. But we must also rise from the ashes of this tragedy and learn to stand together. One way to honor the lives lost is to go past our hurt and beyond our hate to come together and support the regrowth of our country.

Aggie Habitat, the Texas A&M chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and Faith in Action are teaming up to bring multiple pumpkin patches to the Bryan/College Station area. The two groups sponsor the patches as an effort to raise funds to build homes for families in the area. The Aggie Habitat Pumpkin Patch sells more than 3,000 pumpkins each year. They offer several services to the community, including the opportunity for pumpkin carving socials and field trips.
Stuhrenberg said. “It was a really beautiful setting for that. Once we were done, the bigs and littles would pick out pumpkins together and continue the fun that evening.”
Pumpkin Patch Carnival, scheduled this year for Saturday, October 21, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Stuhrenberg is looking forward to attending the carnival for the first time.
The pumpkin patch is located at 220 Rock Prairie Rd. in College Station, on the Covenant Presbyterian Church grounds. It’s open September 30 to October 31, Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to dark, Saturday from 8 a.m. to dark and Sunday from 10 a.m. to dark.
“I’m really excited about it,” Stuhrenberg said. “I love fall, I love pumpkins and I love carnivals, so this should be a great time.”
Paige Stuhrenberg, a graduate of Texas A&M University and a Delta Zeta alumnus, said her sorority enjoyed attending the pumpkin patch in years past.
The Faith in Action Pumpkin Patch is the second location the groups are sponsoring in the area. This pumpkin patch is located at 2301 E. 29th St. in Bryan, next to Hillier Funeral Home.
“We would all get dressed up nice and take group photos in the pumpkin patch,”
In addition to the daily pumpkin patch, this location is also home to the Faith in Action

Taco soup is a quick and easy Tex-Mex style soup that takes very little time to put together, and offers great reward for only a small amount of effort. It’s a dish in which flavor is built quickly, and slow-cooking is not a requirement, making this stove top soup perfect for any weeknight dinner. This version of taco soup is beefed up with a generous portion of seasoned ground beef, that is browned, and then removed from the pot and set aside to be strained. Fresh jalapeños, corn and onions go in, and are sautéed until just softened. In goes a can of fire roasted tomatoes, better enabling us to build big flavors in very little time. A happy helping of creamy red kidney beans, and the cooked ground beef are added back to the pot. The whole chi-bang is covered by low-sodium vegetable broth, and then simmers for about 30 minutes, allowing all of those wonderful, big and bright flavors to come together. The juice of a lime adds just the right amount of acidity, and the end result is a perfectly balanced soup that both the grownups and the kids will enjoy. A weeknight meal you can count on to provide your family with smiling faces, empty bowls and happy bellies. Enjoy. Ingredients: 3 corn cobs (or 2 1/4 cup of cooked corn kernels) 2 pounds (80/20) ground beef 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons TAK’s Tex-Mex Spice Blend, separated (or 1 packet of store-bought taco seasoning) 1 tablespoon Canola oil 1 yellow onion, diced 6 jalapeños, stemmed, seeded and diced 2 cloves of garlic, minced 2 (14.5 ounce) cans fire roasted diced tomatoes, drained 1 (16 ounce) can dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 6 cups low-sodium vegetable broth 2 teaspoons Kosher salt Juice of half a lime Optional Toppings: Freshly grated cheddar cheese Sour cream Chopped black olives Minced cilantro
Method: If using corn cobs, remove the husks from the corn, along with any remaining silk and rinse briefly under running water. Using a sharp knife cut off the shank end of the corn, creating a solid base to stand it right-side up. Cut off the kernels and set aside until ready to use. Discard of the cobs. Add ground beef and a 1/4 cup of the Tex-Mex Spice Blend (or 1 packet of taco seasoning) to a Dutch oven, or large pot, over medium-high heat. Break apart the ground beef and continue to cook until all of the pink is gone, about 6-8 minutes. Remove from the heat. Carefully, transfer the ground beef to a strainer, use the back of a wooden spoon to press out as much grease as possible. Set aside until ready to use. Wipe the Dutch oven clean and add to it the Canola oil. Place over medium heat. Add the onion and jalapeños and sauté 6 minutes. Add the corn, cover and cook 3 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 1 minute more. Add tomatoes and kidney beans, along with the ground beef and stir. Add vegetable broth, salt and 2 tablespoons of the Tex-Mex Spice Blend (disregard if using storebought taco seasoning, and use salt and pepper to taste). Stir once more and raise the heat to medium-high, just until the soup comes to a rapid boil. Reduce the heat to mediumlow and gently simmer 30 minutes. Finish with the lime juice, stir and serve with favored toppings. Serves 6-8. FOR MORE RECIPES, GO TO WWW.THEANTHONYKITCHEN.COM, AND CLICK THE “WEEKEND DINNERS” CATEGORY.
