APP REVIEW

$3.99

There really is an app for everything. With the release of “Little Kitten Adventures,” users can care for a virtual cat, dressing it up for parties, mending cuts and bruises, and taking funny photos of the furry friend.

There are several side games that go with the app. Users can help guide Little Kitten through various mazes, help return fallen presents to their trays, while also learning shapes, and play memory games to earn bonus items for Little Kitten. While this app is clearly a learning-and-entertainment app intended for younger audiences, you have to ask yourself if it’s worth it. “Little Kitten Adventures” definitely has the special effects to keep the little one’s attention, which is useful when educating them. However, with an initial cost of $3.99, and several in-app purchases that become necessities for further use, you have to wonder if there are other free apps that wouldn’t do the trick. If you are looking for an app that will keep your child engaged while also teaching them, and you are fine with spending the money, this app is great. Otherwise, download another game for free.

MOVIE REVIEW

If you plan on seeing this film at the theatres, be sure to take some tissues, because this faith-themed movie will tug your heart and your emotions. This tearjerker film is based on an autobiographical memoir written by Ron Hall, Alexander Foard and Michael Carney. “Same Kind of Different as Me” is about a wealthy Texas couple, Ron and Debbie Hall, who have a call to befriend Denver, a violent homeless man. Greg Kinnear stars as Ron Hall, a Texas art dealer, whose perspective on life is changed significantly by his wife. In a deteriorating marriage, Debbie convinces Ron to commit acts of selfless service to their community. She convinces him to accompany her in volunteering at an inner-city shelter to feed the homeless. At the shelter they meet Denver (Djimon Hounsou), a former sharecropper, who teaches the privileged couple the meaning of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. “Same Kind of Different as Me” highlights the humble acts of charity, kindness, and forgiveness. The relationship between Ron, Debbie and Denver is unusual and creates a strong juxtaposition between their different social and economic statuses. Although the story is true and inspirational in it’s own way, it is also very sad. You would expect that the characters are able to achieve more than they sought to do. However, in reality, life doesn’t always work in your favor, and this movie relays that message through the personal development of Ron and Denver. Guess you can say it’s another one of those typical cliché old-fashioned Christian film.

ALBUM REVIEW American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson has come a long way since

her days on America’s most popular reality television singing competition. She has traded her pop-rock attitude for a soulful 14-track album with Atlantic Records Label.

by Jaclyn Ysaquirre

Overall, it seems that her new album, “Meaning of Life,” is overproduced in parts, but it is still probably her best album to date. Her song “Love So Soft” is that perfect confident-woman-attitude classic, and “Cruel” is the new lip sync hit to be sung by an audience at a live concert.

ARTIST: Kelly Clarkson ALBUM: Meaning of Life RELEASED: Oct. 27, 2017

Clarkson expresses her individuality in “Whole Lotta Woman,” which is an ode to confident Texan women. Her “I Don’t Think About You” is a ballad that was inspired by artist Mariah Carey, while “Didn’t I” brings out her confidence as a strong independent woman. Unlike any other of her songs, “Slow Dance” has a blend of a sensual country rhythm. This production is set to open new doors to Clarkson in her professional music career.

Roommate Tips for a Better Living Situation As college students, we look for people to live with in order to make rent cheaper because, well, school takes all our money. In the process of looking for a roommate, we want to make sure that their characteristics match with our expectations, but sometimes things do not always work out as planned. Here are a few tips in order to make your living situation go as smooth as possible. If something bothers you, tell them. Do not be the petty roommate who passive aggressively makes moves but never says anything bluntly. This will save your time and energy because whatever is bothering you will get fixed faster. Own up to your own mistakes. If you did not wash the dishes for a week, or you left your laundry in the dryer for too long, do not make excuses. Just pick up after yourself and go on. Your roommate is not your mother. Of course there is nothing wrong with asking for a favor when it comes to chores ever once in a while, but do not over do it. Do not eat food that is not yours without permission. You see something you like in the fridge, but it is your roommates, ask to have it or simply do not eat it. If you have guests, make sure you let them know which food they can and cannot eat, because nothing is more annoying than coming home starving and

6

realizing your leftovers are gone because your roommate’s boyfriend ate them. Think twice before rooming with your best friend. As good as that sounds, sometimes roommate issues lead to the friendship breaking up. You might not realize that you have completely different expectations, and your perfect apartment turns into somewhere you do not even want to live. If things are not working out, move out before you end an important friendship. If you have a pet, make sure to always clean up after them. Be considerate of your roommate/s, because no one wants their house smelling like animal feces. Take turns doing chores around the house. A good organization plan is having a calendar on the fridge that says who’s turn it is to take out the trash, to sweep and mop, or to vacuum. Whether you are a good or terrible roommate, hopefully these tips will help in making life easier. It is tough to find a roommate that meets the expectations you desire, but if you do, appreciate it. If your living situation is more than you can handle, talk to your roommate in a mature way, to see how things can be resolved. Do not let something that can be fixed today wait until tomorrow.

From Cramped to Cozy A Student Living Guide

From diva to dorm, here are some tips on how to make your new placebygoDaly fromWitt grungy to glamorous all without breaking the bank! Alright college kiddos, it’s time to decorate YOUR pad. That home away from home that every rebellious teen has dreamt about at least once or (cough) a million times? I know that when it was time for me to leave the nest and venture out into the big “scary” world on my own, I was more than ready. Or so I thought. Your apartment is your home. Your home away from what’s probably the only home you’ve ever known. It’s the first place that is all yours—minus random roommates or obese cats. But other than that, it’s your domain, the first actual place in your life where you get to make the rules, right? Therefore, this is a pretty important place, and, from sleeping and studying to partying and lounging, you want to make sure your place is chic, cozy and inviting. Growing up, I feel like most of us live with the motto that more is better. This is so not true. Quality over quantity people. As much as you think you need all those heels (that realistically only work for exactly one outfit), or all those free t-shirts that you got as a freshman year from different organizations, you don’t. Just get rid of it. And just because your friend gifts you with yet another Bath and Body Works lotion set, it’s okay. You’re not a bad

friend. Just do it, throw it all away. Seriously. When living on your own, you will discover the glory and power of simplicity. The less dishes you have to eat off of and clothes you have to wear, the less crap you have to wash, fold, dry, or put away! Yes, it’s nice to have everything from old Halloween costumes to your high school shorts and dresses, why realistically neither fit nor should you be still wearing. Trust me, you don’t really need your old middle school memorabilia at your new place. Just put it in the Parents’ attic and wait until you get married to look at it again. Don’t go crazy at Home Goods, Tuesdays, or Bed Bath and Beyond either. Yes, I know they have the cutest stuff ever. But make sure you have room and space for the essentials, such as a bed and dresser, before you start adding all that extra (and yes, surprisingly unnecessary) fluff. Although all those cute candles, throw pillows, and random desk decorations look nice, they are just going to create clutter, mess, and possibly hazardous situations. Fake plants are your best friend. I know succulents are cool and all, but Pinterest is lying to you. They aren’t as easy to take care of as you think. Flowers look nice and whatnot, but if you have any pets in your house, just don’t do it. Many types of flowers are very bad if eaten by both canines and felines. So unless you want

to have to deal with extreme bodily functions, possibly expensive emergency vet visits, and the saddening feeling of realizing that you are a bad plant parent, just stick with fake plants. Hobby Lobby and Michaels have every single type of fake plant and hassle free succulent imaginable. They will do wonders towards brightening up your apartment, just without the mess, responsibility, and annoying gnats that seem to always be around plants. Mood lighting is important, as ambiance is everything! Make sure to put lamps and soft lighting throughout your place so that the vibe is always cozy and inviting. You also want to make sure that there is a tasteful amount of color and decoration around the apartment. Just enough to be refined. A few throw pillows, inspirational wall décor, and pictures of the friends, fam, and loved ones will do wonders at opening and brightening up the space. So blast some music, get some candles lit, and hang that inviting school-spirited cute wreath outside your door. It’s time for the world to know that you have moved in and arrived! Disclaimer: Please make sure to consult current roommates or living partners before total home makeover, as their style may differ from your obviously perfect fashion sense. Just be cautious to not step on any toes and cover all bases when decorating.

NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH

>

NaNoWriMo

Writers, on your mark. Get set. Go! Novella November, a whirlwind month full of typing. Each Thanksgiving season, individuals worldwide are invited to participate in National Novel Writing Month, a friendly competition and inspirational movement. This contest is a race against time and yourself! In order to participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), all you have to do is create an easy to setup and completely free account on the official NaNoWriMo website. The end goal is to reach 50,000 words by midnight, at the conclusion of this month. 30 days, and 50,000 words later, you’ll be all that much closer towards a publishable product. Everyone participating in this group is different, and they all have have differing writing aspirations. Whether you simply write as a hobby or you want to have it become a profession (like myself), this competition is here to help you move forward and grow as an experienced writer. The tools provided on this site are unbelievable. Some of the writing templates and tips that they provide have enabled me to get a jump start on my own personal 50,000-word manuscript this month.

Once you sign up you will have endless, and extremely helpful access, to hundreds of forums, helpful tips, and even writing templates to help get you started. Writing a novel never seemed so easy! This program is a great way for like-minded individuals to come together and grow as aspiring writers. Novelists and writers galore, contrary to the introvert hermit image I feel many associate us with, also need a supportive and stimulating community in which they can connect, learn, and grow. Nearly half a million people sign up each year, and this program is inclusive of all ages, as they even have a NaNo Young Writers Program. Now that I’ve gotten you all excited (it’s okay no need to lie) you’re probably wondering how exactly NaNoWriMo works. So let’s go over the breakdown. After creating an account, and gaining access to tons of different sites, it’s time for you to actually title your novel.

This competition is basically a battle against yourself, and the clock. Race against time this November and see what this worldwide movement is all about.

No need to fret however, because if you’re anything like me, who believes the title to be of utmost importance to the embodiment of the book, after you initially announce the title, it can always be changed and edited. The site just makes you do it so that you can update your word count in that specific novel each day.

Creating an account is completely free and only takes a couple of minutes.

Once you announce your masterpiece, you have the option of uploading a

NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH cover and filling out a brief synopsis over your story’s plotline. However, you do not, I repeat, do not actually write your novel on the NaNoWriMo website. This site is just a way for you to keep track of yourself and for others to encourage you and keep tabs on your progress as well. Each day, it is suggested that you update your word count to the current amount. In order to stay on track with the 50,000 word goal, it is estimated that you need to write 1,667 words a day. However, this competition is completely on your time, and you can structure your writing amounts differently than this proposed suggestion. The cool thing about writing is that you are your own boss, so plan your writing schedule around all your other responsibilities! Personally, I have found that it’s really helpful for busier people to break writing into smaller chunks. The website has a word sprint tool, which helps you to set a timer and write uninterrupted for a certain amount before it goes off. No editing or changing, just constant typing or scrawling on paper. I have found this tool helpful, as it makes my daily word goals seem less unreachable. However, (helpful tip time) I also have also learned a nifty trick for keeping track of my somewhat random and fleeting ideas. Instead of letting that split second brilliant idea pass me by, I have just started typing some ideas into my phones notes app, when I don’t have anything else to record on. I record everything, even just a few sentences of dialogue between my characters or a descriptive scene, and then I just email it to myself. That way I don’t loose any ideas, I can access them all the next time I am on my laptop and actually prepared to write, and I find it easier to reach my word count each day because I’m constantly doing it as I go along with my other daily business. As well as being able to connect with writers from around the world, there is also a tab on the website labeled regions, where you can find a NaNoWriMo group that meets up near your town! There are a total of 651 of these Municipal Liasons around the world that get together to help spread the writing fever. And if you’re somewhat of a homebody like myself, these communities also participate in live organized virtual write-ins, where you can get connected from the comfort of your own home. This sort of collaboration helps to get your creative flow moving and helps to keep you accountable and on track. Since I am personally participating in this competition, I located the BCS regions page and was instantly directed to their personal regional lounge. I was able to see each member t near me, and it was

really inspiring to see how many motivated writers there were in my area. I noticed that they were even throwing a celebratory kick-off party on Halloween night that would go until midnight, the start of NaNoWriMo. After reading the encouraging comments on the page, and also just out of sheer curiosity, I decided to RSVP to the event, and see where it took me. On All Hallows Eve, at around 10 p.m., I donned my Daphne costume (shoutout to all you Scooby Doo fans in the house) and went to the Ihop on Highway 6, not really sure what to expect. The night was rainy and cold, however, once I stepped into the sectioned off party room in the restaurant, the warming atmosphere changed to about 20 smiling individuals. They immediately complimented my costume and welcomed both myself and the rest of my Scooby Gang. The ambiance and atmosphere in that brightly decorated room was very supportive and encouraging. Everyone who was gathered around the long connected tables was extremely friendly and chatty. At first I had been nervous that I might not fit in, or that it would be a tight-knit group. However, everyone intermingled with one another, switching from seat to seat as goody bags were passed out to each member. These bags played along with the theme of this year’s NaNoWriMo. Every year, the competition has a different theme, which are not required to be part of your manuscript, but can be helpful suggestions for any artists struggling for ideas or topics. This year’s theme is Superheros, which I found kind of intriguing, since there are so many modern day adaptations of comic classics. The superhero treat bags had a lot of themed goodies inside, some candy, a superhero pencil with a cute cape eraser and a printed out handbook, that gave many helpful tips and was small enough to be brought around everywhere! Ted Boone, one of the three volunteer municipal liaisons for the region of Bryan-College Station, was sitting across from me. Liaisons coordinate events and write-ins, organize the regions site page and serve as knowledgeable mentors and leaders for rookies like myself. As a Mays Business Professor, Boone is also the primary on campus coordinator, hosting weekly meet-ups in the Evans Annex to write, eat yummy treats and share ideas. “You have to learn to turn off your inner editor and just write, even if you think it’s garbage,” Boone,

who has completed 13 NaNoWriMos, explained when asked about helpful tips to success. “You can’t fix something that doesn’t exist.” On November 30, at the end of the month, you are supposed to copy and paste your novel into the NaNoWriMo word processor, where your writing is checked to see if it is over the 50,000-word minimum. After your piece is checked, you join the circle of winners! “It seems overwhelming at first because of the big numbers, but, if you just dedicate less than a couple hours a day, you’ll have a full manuscript by the end of the month,” Boone said. “It’s all about teaching yourself to get the words out.” Winners gain special privileges and access to discounted writing websites, applications, and downloads. This is basically like Mary Poppins’ endless goody bag for Writers. They have everything. Many of the sponsors of this movement offer their services, products, and subscriptions at extremely lowered rates. Some applications even come free after you win. “In the end, this is all about what you personally want to get out of it,” Boone said. “But this is as fun for you as it is for us.” This simple challenge could lead to a lifetime of writing. Do it for yourself, and see where the pages will lead you. Your novel could just change the world.

letters home by Jaclyn Ysaqquire

Do you ever get that giddy feeling when you open your mailbox? It’s especially urgent when you are expecting to receive a package from something that you bought online, isn’t it. We all feel a sense of eagerness, whether it’s a package, invitation or love letter. Well, how would you feel if you were anticipating a letter from a loved one who is serving in the military and stationed across the world? Would you feel that same level of excitement? For most military families, the answer would probably be “no.” A letter like that could cause anxiety, but it could also provide reassurance that their soldier is safe. On Monday November 13, 2017 at 7 p.m., Texas A&M University Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts will host the Griffin Theatre Company’s production “Letters Home” in Rudder Theatre. “Letters Home” is a play that illustrates the life of United States soldiers living in the Middle East. This production brings to life real correspondences between soldiers and their parents. “Letters Home” was originally inspired by the New York Times Op-Ed article “The Things They Wrote.” Along with a nationally recognized publication, author Frank Schaeffer also influenced the production of the play with his nonfiction works related to the life of American soldiers. The Griffin Theatre Company was able to transform these letters and correspondences from various sources into a stage adaptation. The stories are re-created and portrayed from first-person perspective, while images and videos are projected behind the actors. These photos and videos are obtained from actual soldiers’ blogs, websites and social media. This play gives an insight on the daily experiences that an American soldier goes through mentally and physically. It depicts the disorientation of training, deployment to foreign countries, separation from loved ones, war and their occupational responsibilities. These stories reveal the soldiers’ acts of bravery, compassion and social responsibility to their home country that is thousands of miles away. The performance will take place on campus in Rudder Theatre. Tickets can be purchased through the Memorial Student Center Box Office. General Admission is $7, and student tickets are $5.

ART

A Texas A&M University professor and local artist will be announced as the next Artist of the Month at The Village Café & Art979 Gallery on November 16. John Krajicek, an executive professor and assistant director of business communication studies at Texas A&M, is getting his second showcase at The Village. Krajicek will also be performing with his band, Leavenworth, at the opening. Krajicek’s interest in art began at a very early age. After his fascination with abstract art helped him win his elementary art show in the fourth grade, his hobby took a backseat in his life. “I was really juiced by the arts at a really young age,” Krajicek said. “But I never thought about it as a career. I looked at it mainly as fun.” Instead, Krajicek began to focus on school and took up golf, which eventually lead him to North Texas State University in Denton. His golf career gave him a chance to play with greats such as Fred Couples and Steve Johns, but Krajicek eventually realized golf was not meant to be his career either.

A&M Professor, Local Artist by Justin Walker

“When I gave up the dream to play professionally, golf became fun again,” he said. Krajicek would go on to earn a BA and MSA from NTSU, and after the university changed its name to the University of North Texas, he finished his MA in 1993. Three years later, Krajicek joined the faculty of Mays Business School at Texas A&M. Becoming a professor gave Krajicek a similar rush his art gave him. “I like performing,” he said. “I like being on stage, and teaching let me do that. I work really hard to make my students enjoy class. I really care about them, and I think that makes the

ART While his art has become a huge hit in the area, his music career has also flourished. In the summer of 2015, Krajicek decided to start his own band. While he had played in a lot of bands over the years, many of them only played covers and did not fall into the genre of his choice. “I digged it,” he said. “But it was not me.” So he set out to find the perfect guys and he had a list of qualifications they had to meet. “First, do I dig you? Second, do you understand and get my music? Finally, are you good?” In no time, he was able to form the band Leavenworth. difference.” Krajicek labels his teaching style as “edu-tainment,” or a mix between education and entertainment. Whatever it’s called, it works. Krajicek has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including an Association of Former Students Award for Teaching, the Creswell Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Killingsworth Award in Teaching Excellence. Throughout his many successes in the classroom, Krajicek has managed to find the time to get back to his passion of the arts. After initially feeling unable to succeed as an artist, he met with a few local artists and his confidence grew. “It took six months before I had something I would show someone,” Krajicek said. “But after I visited a few art openings, I felt like I could do it.”

“I’d often ask myself, ‘how did this happen so quickly?’ This isn’t Austin. This isn’t New York.” Leavenworth has experienced quite the successful start and they are preparing to release a second album, “Convictions, Vol. 1,” in November 2017. Krajicek stays busy between his art, the band, his teaching and his family. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” he said. Krajicek recommends anyone interested in the arts or songwriting stay true to themselves.

In March of 2016, Krajicek was selected as the Artist of the Month at the Village, and later that summer he was showcased at the SEAD Gallery in Bryan.

“Be authentic at all costs,” he said. “Guard your authenticity. That goes for pretty much any profession. Just do it. I spent too long thinking ‘who am I to do it?’ And perspective. You don’t have to be Jackson Pollock or Adele to be successful. I can be on a level that emotionally feeds and I’m a success.”

“When a painting is going well, I am not thinking,” Krajicek said. “I am not planning. I will come out of it for 10 minutes and see what I have done so far, but then it is right back at it.”

Krajicek’s showcase and Leavenworth’s performance will both begin at 6 p.m. on opening night. Be sure to get there early and enjoy the arts of the Brazos Valley.

BOOK REVIEW

THE RULES OF MAGIC BY ALICE HOFFMAN

Love hardly ever seems like a curse, but for the Owens family, it is one than began in 1620 when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man. Now, a few hundred years later in the city that never sleeps, Susanna Owens knows that her three children Franny, Jet, and Vincent are not like the other New York city kids. There is something off about them, something different. Something that can’t help but draw attention. From the very beginning, Susanna sets down rules for her children that they must never break: no red shoes, no black clothes, no candles, no cats, no crows, no walking in the moonlight, no books about magic. But most importantly: never, under any circumstances, fall in love. Susanna cannot stress this enough to her kids, but will they listen? A visit to the a small town in Massachusetts where the Owen’s family hails from seems like a good idea. At the time. Soon, the children uncover deeply hidden family secrets and the truth about who and what they really are is discovered. Once back in New York, the three begin their own journeys, as they each try to escape the family curse that has chased every Owen since 1620. Unbeknownst to the Owens children, they can never escape the family curse, they can never outrun love, even if they try. After all, the pains of the human heart are not easily outrun. “The Rules Of Magic” by Alice Hoffman is real and thrilling. It is a must read that I wanted to curl up and read for forever. It has a fairy-tale promise with a real-life struggle that is utterly addicting. The background of historical events that went on during the 1960’s only heightens the addiction, because it is real. This book, these characters, they’re like the rest of us. They have to figure out the best way to put their powers to use.

THE BEAR MOUNTAIN HOSTS QUESTIVAL It all began when you were a little kid and your parents took you to an Easter egg hunt. The thrill of finding that oval capsule with pieces of candy trapped inside overwhelmed you. That excitement elevated when you got a little older and participated in scavenger hunts with friends. You and your friends piled in cars and travelled all across the city looking for random objects in a race against the other team. Now, there is a new by Justin Walker and exciting adventure for you and your friends to take part in, right here in College Station: Questival. The Bear Mountain is hosting the 2017 College Station Questival race on November 10-11. Questival is a 24 hour race designed for friends to explore their favorite city and experience the wonders it has to offer. Groups ranging from two to six people will travel across the city and must complete challenges in order to receive points needed to win $10,000 worth of prizes. The challenges range from fitness-based to service and food-based challenges, and they may require participants get out of their comfort zone. Each

challenge is worth either three, six and nine points. Three points are awarded for items such as watching a sunrise, capturing a picture of street art or sending a postcard to a senator. Six points can be earned through actions such as taking a cooking class, dressing up teammates as your parents, and recreating a pivotal memory or crafting a canoe out of cardboard and floating a teammate in it. Earning nine points requires groups to be a bit creative, such as catching a fish with a fly rod, hiking to the nearest waterfall, or donating blood while wearing Dracula teeth. Interested parties should register online at www. cotopaxi.com/products/questival-college-stationtx-2017, download the free Questival app and wait for the list to be emailed out shortly before the race begins. Check in begins at 6 p.m. on November 10 at The Bear Mountain in College Station. if you are not able to make it to the College Station race or just want to explore other cities across the country, visit the website for future race dates.

Choro das Tres

live at Icehouse on Main by Azalea Andrade

We all know that the BCS area is known for its love for country music. Something country is usually going on around town, but this time country is taking a back seat. Instead, the spotlight is on a Brazilian band named Choro Das Tres. Choro Das Tres will be at the Icehouse on Main on November 11. Choro Das Tres is not your typical band. In 2002, three sisters and their father started the group based on their interest in Altamiro Carrilho, a Brazilian musician and composer. Their main focus is instrumental, therefore most of their songs are nonverbal. Corina is on flute, Lia on 7 strings guitar, Elisa on the mandolin, and their father Eduardo is plays the tambourine. In 2003, they won the 1st Adoniran Barbosa Music Festival, a contest among every school in the Brazilian state of SĂŁo Paulo. Five years later, in 2008, Choro das Tres recorded their first album in their own studio titled Meu Brasil Brasileiro. Their albums always include duets with other great Brazilian musicians. In 2012, Choro das Tres released an album called Escorregando with the record

label Macole. With this album, they became internationally known. Their genre is called Choro, which originated in Brazil, specifically Rio de Janeiro, in the 19th century. Choro is Portuguese for cry or lament, and, despite its name, it has a very upbeat rhythm. Choro came the first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music. This music has a way of relaxing while also keeping the mood up. Enjoying it live would give you the full experience, while also musically transporting you to another country. The truly amazing sound of each instrument brings out the historical significance that this genre holds, as well as the family unity this group has. If you are looking for a unique and culturally significant event, Come out to Icehouse on Main, and be ready for an amazing show. Tickets are $15, if bought in advance, and $20 at the door. You can even purchase a high-top table with 4 seats for $100. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and the show will begin at 8:00 p.m.

root vegtables Although we live in a world in which we can access just about any ingredient at any given time, I sure do love cooking along with the seasons. What can I say? I’m just a festive soul that way. However, cooking in harmony with nature’s bounty has more benefit than just sending over the warm and fuzzies, it actually tastes better as well.

KELLY ANTHONY IS A HOME CHEF, BLOGGER AND CREATOR OF THEANTHONYKITCHEN.COM, WHERE SHE SHARES RECIPES AND SPECIALIZES IN REFINED COMFORT FOOD.

IN THE KITCHEN

With KELLY

Transfer to the oven and bake for 30 minutes, carefully turning the vegetables with a spatula halfway through the cooking process. Remove from the heat, serve and enjoy.

Eating seasonally (more times than not) means that you are ingesting natures goodness at peak freshness, and there is a much smaller span of time from when the produce was harvested, to the very moment it is served upon your table. The cliff notes version? It simply tastes better this way. This recipe is a root vegetable medley, featuring two of fall’s sweetest offerings -- carrots and parsnips. If you happen to be whipping up this ditty in the fall, you can count on an extra dose of sweetness from those two lovelies. Throw in some potatoes for good measure, and call it a day. This is the perfect side dish to serve up alongside any savory, roasted protein on any night of the week. Please, enjoy. Ingredients 4 carrots rinsed and peeled 3 parsnips rinsed and peeled 4 standard-sized red potatoes rinsed 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon fresh, minced rosemary 1 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/ 2 teaspoon black pepper Instructions Cut both the carrots and parsnips on a bias into 3/4” pieces. Cut the larger pieces toward the stem in half so that all pieces are roughly the same size. Transfer to the baking sheet and set aside. Cut the potatoes into 1/8’s, and add to the baking sheet. Drizzle the vegetables with oil and sprinkle with rosemary, salt and pepper. Toss to evenly coat. FOR MORE SEASONAL RECIPES, GO TO WWW.THEANTHONYKITCHEN.COM,
