MEDIA SHAKEDOWN

$2.99

Everyone has the desire to share those breath-taking photos from that awesome trip they took, but not everyone has the software to do it. Instagram may offer filters, but sometimes you need to highlight certain areas of the photo, and only Photoshop can suffice. Or at least that used to be the case. Afterlight 2 is a photo-editing app right on the phone. No need to import photos to a laptop and purchase a monthly subscription to have brilliantly-edited photos. On Afterlight 2, the user can add artwork and text, play with hue and saturation levels and dabble with double exposure, creating unique combinations of photos. There is even a regularly updated pack of filters that can be edited or fused together. While the app does have a one-time fee of $2.99, the price pales in comparison to other editing software on the market. There are no hidden fees or subscriptions to access the new content added monthly. Afterlight 2 allows users to be the photographer they have always wanted to be.

A Bad mom’s christmas by Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW

Who doesn’t love a good Christmas movie? Holiday-themed movies have become an entire genre, generating classics like “A Christmas Story,” “The Santa Clause” and “Home Alone.” You can add “A Bad Moms Christmas” to that list. While the Scott Moore and Jon Lucas directed film may not be winning the Academy Award for Best Picture, it will certainly entertain audiences with its hilarious cast and naughty humor. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn reprise their roles as three overworked and under-appreciated mothers. While each is planning for a very low-key Christmas with their kids, all three have their own mothers unexpectedly show up, bringing chaos with them. Cheryl Hines, Christine Baranski and Susan Sarandon play the moms, each of them a different type of crazy and overbearing. “A Bad Moms Christmas” relies a lot on crude humor, and that has tanked films in the past. However, the main cast manages to pull it off with their charismatic personalities. While the script is lacking in several areas, most notably when the children are involved in the conversation, it is hard not to laugh seeing three somewhat relatable characters deal with over-obsessed, greedy and dominating mothers. Will this movie win any awards? Absolutely not. Can it still be deeply entertaining? Definitely. Sit back and watch it for the Christmas feeling, the raunchy laughs or to just be thankful that your family isn’t as dysfunctional as they could be. But remember, adult audiences only.

ALBUM REVIEW Weezer’s

by Madison Caldwell

new album, “Pacific Daydream,” has 10 flowing tracks that primarily talk about summer love. That’s a great topic and all, except that we are all deep into the Fall season. Ouch, talk about a buzz kill. This album has me wanting to drive with the top down and music blasting along the western coastline, not have to bundle up to walk to class in the frigid Texas air. I mean come on guys, one of his lyrics states, “and it feels like Summer.” Talk about a tease.

ARTIST: Weezer ALBUM: Pacific Daydream RELEASED: Oct. 27, 2017

to wait until next summer to jam out to it.

This album just feels very innocent, upbeat and light. It tells the story of love, but in a really uplifting manner. Weezer is still as melodic, soothing and just plain cool as they were back in the early 2000s. When vocalist Richard Cuomo sings “I’ll be missing you like oxygen,” on the new song “QB Blitz,” my nostalgic teenage angst-filled self realized that I really missed hearing this artist. Weezer always has a way of connecting and empathizing with the Don’t get me wrong, I’m a total Weezer fan, and audience’s emotions and everyday problems, and this album definitely didn’t disappoint. Weezer, of this album is no exception. course, still records to impress, with their chill vibes and nostalgic vocals. However, my overall rating of Even though it is kind of gloomy and chilly outside, the album did decline when the music didn’t match I think I’m still going to put this album on blast and the dreary tone of the season. Bummer, I’ll just have let Weezer take me on a “Pacific Daydream.”

There are three things you want to surround yourself with during the winter months: friends, food and quilts. You may be wondering why those are the essentials. I’ll tell you why. Those three things are actually the foundation of having a wonderful time during the most wonderful time of the year. Friends to make you laugh and make memories with. Food simply because everyone loves food. And quilts? Well, there is nothing better to drape yourself with, as you pile up your plate with food and fill your heart with the sound of laughter.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, there are a few things to keep in mind. Purchase all materials for class ahead of time. Because of copyright reasons, sharing patterns and books during class is not allowed. Doors will open 30 minutes before the scheduled class begins, and it is encouraged to show up 15 minutes early to set up your workstation, as class will begin promptly at the listed time. Like any class, quilting class will require some prep work before class time. It is advised to review the entire pattern or book before class begins. Basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, rulers, thread, etc.) are required for most classes, and Lonestar Quiltworks asks that you double check that you have your foot pedal and cord for your machine. The shop will rent out machines for $10 if you do not want to bring your own, but they ask to know in advance. Sign up for a quilting class for a charming evening with your friends, significant other, mother, etc. Make the most of the holiday months and get yourself a quilt.

benefiting brazos valley FOOD BANK

by Jaclyn Ysaqquire

In an effort to end the ongoing issue of world hunger, the Brazos Valley is tackling the problem one bowl at a time. On Saturday, November 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Purple Turtle Arts Studio and the Frame Gallery will host their 12th Annual Empty Bowls Event to benefit the Brazos Valley Food Bank at the Parker Astin Arts Center in Downtown Bryan. At this event, guests have the opportunity to make a minimum donation of $20 and choose from a variety of ceramic bowls. These handmade bowls are designed by local potters and artists from U Paint It Pottery Studio, Joy Pottery, Living Water Pottery and Blinn College students enrolled in a ceramics class. After choosing your bowl, you will be served a full meal of soup, along with a side of bread and water, that is provided by local participating restaurants such as The Village Café, Must Be Heaven, and Caffe’ Capri. The original idea for this project was developed by an art teacher in Michigan who wanted students to conduct a fundraising project and make a personal difference in the community. The students made ceramic bowls in their art class, which were later used to raise funds for their local community. Contributing guests then kept the empty bowls. This project gathered the public’s attention and grew into the Empty Bowls Project, which is now a nationally known charitable organization. To take part in the Empty Bowl Project, you can visit the U Paint It Pottery Studio and hand make your own bowl. For $12, you can mold and paint a soup bowl that will be sold at the event. Only one bowl per person is accepted. Each bowl serves as a reminder of all the empty bowls in our community and around the world of people who can’t afford or don’t have access to food. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Brazos Valley Food Bank, to ensure that no one is left hungry in our community.

“We just want to find better ways to reach out to the community and let them know that care is provided to those in need regardless of their age, faith, origin, diagnosis, and financial ability to pay for our services.” Johnson said. Hoping to find a way to branch out closer to campus, relocation was needed so that students could also be included and attracted to their storefront. “We want people to know that we are open to the greater community donating, however a lot of people very personally associate their past loved one’s belongings with grief and pain,” Johnson said. “Our goal is to help them to feel comfortable and knowledgeable that their belongings will be well valued, respected, and received.”

BOOK REVIEW

MIND HUNTER BY JOHN DOUGLAS

For some of us, serial killers are a topic that both chills and fascinates. What were they thinking? How could they do it? What is wrong with them? These are the questions that float around inside our minds. Always floating, never landing on a solid answer. Until now. “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” by John Douglas is our first glimpse into the mind of a serial killer. Douglas spent 25 years with the FBI, and in that time he became a legend. Douglas proves that legends are not born. Rather, they are the ones who test limits and pursue some of the most notorious and sadistic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted sex workers in Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer and Seattle’s Green River killer. Douglas pushed past boundaries and interviewed and confronted the men out of our nightmares: Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein. He examined each crime scene and relived the thoughts and actions of both the killer and the victim, becoming both predator and prey. “Mindhunter” takes us behind closed doors and into some of the most terrifying and challenging cases Douglas faced. We are going behind the scenes and into the depths of our nightmares, and we are simultaneously deadly curious and terribly afraid. I wanted to leave this book alone, but, as I continued reading, I found myself drawn deeper into the world of criminal profiling. It is disturbing; it is not light reading. At the same time, it was incredibly fascinating to see inside the mind of the killers who have haunted generations. If you are someone who is utterly fixed on true crime, this one is for you.

AGGIE BONFIRE by Justin Walker

The Bonfire continues to ignite a unique flame of spirit and tradition in Aggieland. As Aggie football fans prepare for the game against Louisiana State University the day after Thanksgiving, A&M students are eager to unite their undying flame of love for their university. On Tuesday, November 21, the Student Bonfire organization at Texas A&M will host their annual Burn Night that will light up the Texas sky. With Burn Night around the corner, mixed emotions arise in the wake of the event. At one time, student bonfires were remembered as a jubilant ritual in college football. However, the night of November 18, 1999 changed the way that some Aggies view the effort to continue this special tradition. After what is known as the infamous bonfire tragedy that killed 12 Aggies and injured 27, this tradition became a topic of debate over whether A&M should keep this icon alive or let it rest in the ashes of the historic catastrophe. In remembrance of this horrific night, Aggies come together at the Texas A&M Bonfire Memorial located in the Polo Fields on campus to commemorate the 12 lives that were lost on the night of the collapse. The Bonfire Remembrance Ceremony is held on November 18, from midnight to until 3:40 a.m. This night is dedicated to a silent candlelight vigil, giving attendees time to remember those

who passed away. The collapse of the Bonfire remains a significant event that raises different emotions in former and current students. There has not been an “official on-campus bonfire since the collapse. But, there are those who cannot resist the temptation of experiencing a tradition that held such importance to the student body. The Student Bonfire Organization aims to keep the tradition alive to all who share the same love of the university that taught them teamwork and leadership. Each year, these passionate students spend rigorous hours cutting, carrying and stacking logs of wood by hand to recreate the exuberant atmosphere that initially took place as a joyous rally. A few days following the Bonfire Remembrance Ceremony, the organization relights the flame of Aggie Spirit on Burn Night. Burn Night will take place at Stack Site on Old Hearne Rd. Bryan, TX 77807. The cost of Admission ranges from the time that you arrive on site. Admission is charged per vehicle and not per person. From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. it is free, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. it is $10 per car, and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. it is $20 per car.

Cheese platter

KELLY ANTHONY IS A HOME CHEF, BLOGGER AND CREATOR OF THEANTHONYKITCHEN.COM, WHERE SHE SHARES RECIPES AND SPECIALIZES IN REFINED COMFORT FOOD.

IN THE KITCHEN

With KELLY

Whenever I’m composing a cheese and fruit platter, I first-and-foremost take into consideration the occasion at hand, followed by the time of year. In my experience, using seasonal ingredients makes for a more festive platter, and for the fall, I’ve found that apples and pears do nicely.

Jams and dried fruits also make wonderful additions to cheese platters, providing both a vibrance in flavor and a contrast in texture. For this platter in particular, I pulled in quince paste and dried cranberries. If you aren’t down with quince, have no fear — an apple or pumpkin butter, or even a nice spiced pear jam, would make for a lovely substitution. And, regardless of the season, I just can’t seem to resist a scatter of purple grapes, as they pair well with almost all cheeses, and add a great deal of body and height to the platter. So, we’ve considered the season, which lead us to our choices in fresh fruit, now let us consider what cheese will pair well with that fruit. A Gruyere, a nice sharp, aged Cheddar and Wensleydale with Cranberries would be absolute perfection alongside a fruit and cheese platter featuring apples and pears. If you can’t handle the idea of fruit in your cheese, nix the Wensleydale and head on over to a nice Gouda instead. The last element to our platter is the crackers. Your crackers should allow the flavor of your selected cheeses to shine, not cover them up. This is not the time for heavily salted, crazy flavored crackers. Instead, choose an assortment of water or stone ground crackers, serve and enjoy. Ingredients Apples Pears Grapes Dried Cranberries Quince Paste Gruyere Aged White Cheddar Wensleydale with Cranberries Plain Water Crackers Stoneground Wheat Crackers
