Dead baby boy found

Police investigating case of concealment of birth Alet van der Walt A SHOCKING discovery was made in an open veld in Seemeeupark on Monday (18/05). Welkom resident Alexander Bongani was walking through the park between Lindsay and Starford Road when he saw a transparent plastic bag with what seemed to be the tiny body of a baby inside. Bongani told Vista he had been so shocked and upset, that he had at first fled the scene. But he then stopped and called the police, as well as emergency services. The body of a baby boy with the placenta still intact was found in the plastic bag. Marchant Jacobs, a paramedic with the Department of Health, confirmed to Vista that the baby had already been dead when emergency services arrived at the scene. The police are investigating a case of concealment of birth. It is alleged that a woman and later a man were seen in the area shortly before the body was discovered. The man hurried from the scene when the police and ambulance arrived. ) New-born babies represent

Schools in the dark Dirk Lotriet THE Matjhabeng Municipality has disconnected the electricity supply to 72 public schools in the area because their electricity accounts are in arrears. According to the municipality, a total of 79 public schools in the area owe the municipality about R11 million in overdue fees. “Considering that the municipality owes Eskom R600 million, the R11 million owed by public schools is really minimal,” says David van Vuuren, the DA’s chief whip in the Free State legislature. “The provincial Department of Public Works is responsible for the payment of bulk services to these no-fee schools and it has failed to make timely payments.”

According to Sam Mashinini, Public Works MEC, the department has a shortfall of more than R265 million for the payment of municipal services across the province. Maditse Seoke, head of the Free State Public Works Department, said he was not aware of the electricity supply to the schools being cut. “Until now the municipalities have been patient, because they knew the bills would be paid eventually,” said Leona Kleynhans, member of the provincial legislature (MPL) and member of the portfolio committee on public works. “But their own debt is running into the millions, with the result that they are under pressure to get the money owed to them.”

Eskom accepts payment plan ESKOM Wednesday (20/05) confirmed to the Matjhabeng Ratepayers Organisation that the municipality’s payment plan has been submitted to Eskom and accepted. The debt of R601 million will be paid to Eskom over a period of 30 months, starting this month. Eskom said it would only go ahead with the interruptions if the munici-

pality did not honour the agreement. Although Eskom is aware of the inconvenience caused to individual households, the entity said it could not separate good payers from bad players when electricity was supplied in bulk. Eskom also urged the municipality to avoid such a situation.

Lizette van Niekerk (45), ’n oudleerling van die Goudveld-Hoerskool wat al byna nege jaar in Engeland woon, is nou ’n stadsraadslid vir die Liberale Demokrate in die dorp Eastleigh in Hampshire, Engeland, ná Brittanje se onlangse verkiesing. “Dit is ’n ongelooflike groot voorreg,” sê sy uit die buiteland. Sy meen baie mense hier kry swaar weens die ekonomiese krisis waardeur Europa die afgelope vyf jaar stoei en sy moet hulle nou help. “Daar is nie ’n land in die wêreld wat nie probleme ondervind nie. Mense moenie dink Europa is ’n utopie nie.” Sy het politieke wetenskap in Potchefstroom gestudeer en het nog altyd ’n passie vir politiek gehad. Sowat vyf jaar gelede het sy ’n lid van die Lib-Dems geword en het in plaaslike komitees en die streeksraad gedien voordat sy ’n stadsraadslid geword het. Veranderings onaanvaarbaar SUSAN TALJAARD, VF+-raadslid in die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit: EK spreek hiermee my misnoeë uit met die voorlopige besluit van Matjhabeng se stadsraad om sekere straatname in Welkom te verander. Daar is geen twyfel dat die verandering van plek- en straatname in Suid-Afrika deur ANC-beheerde owerhede ideologie- en verkiesingsgedrewe is nie. Geen van die name wat die munisipaliteit wil verander, gee aanstoot of skep verwarring nie. Te midde van die huidige finansiële krisis wat Matjhabeng beleef, is hierdie voorgestelde naamsverandering absoluut onaanvaarbaar. Die VF+ se standpunt is dat alle strate in die Matjhabengse townships eers straatname moet kry. Die polisie, brandweer en ambulansdienste spreek deurlopend hul kommer uit oor strate wat nie name het nie. Dit bemoeilik hul werk en stel mense se lewe in gevaar omdat hulle nie betyds bereik kan word nie weens ’n gebrek aan straatname. Die gee van name aan hierdie strate moet dus voorkeur geniet bo die verandering van bestaande straatname. Die verandering van straatname en die gepaardgaande uitwerking daarvan op skole, instellings, padaanwysings, huise en ondernemings, gaan miljoene kos. Hierdie koste word gedra deur diegene

wat belasting betaal – dit is daardie deel van die inwoners wat juis nie ten gunste van die naamsverandering is of dit aangevra het nie. Die regering en munisipaliteite is nie in die finansiële posisie om miljoene rande te bestee om bestaande name van plekke en strate te verander nie. Die geld wat aangewend sal moet word vir die beplande naamsveranderinge, kan baie beter aangewend word om dienslewering te verbeter.

Voeg daarby die twee en ’n halwe uur van beurtkrag weens Eskom se gebrek aan leierskap en bestuur, en die inwoners gaan dan vir tien en ’n half uur per dag sonder krag sit. Met ander woorde, amper die helfte van die dag. In ’n onlangse nuusverklaring het ’n munisipale woordvoerder bewerings gemaak dat dit nie sal gebeur nie. Die vraag is dit: Kan ons, die inwoners, op ’n niemandsraad vertrou wat by al hul ander gebreke, nie eens behoorlike vullisverwyderingsdiens kan lewer nie. Ek praat nie eens van die sewe-jaar-oue lekkasies, die 18-maand-oue geblaasde ligte in Dave Frederickstraat of die slaggate in Rianastraat in Naudéville nie. Hoe kan ons vertrou op ’n niemandsraad wat eerder geld wil mors op straatnaamveranderings as om hul skuld van R600 miljoen te betaal? Dit is duidelik dat die spandabelrigheid van die niemandsraad besig is om hom nou in te haal. Vir onnodige dinge is daar altyd geld, maar nooit vir noodsaaklike dinge nie. Wat word van die geld wat deur inwoners vir hul diensterekeninge betaal word? Word

dit net gemors, of wat? Ek sien geen verbeterings aan strate, waterpypleidings of ligte nie. As ons nie op enigiemand van die niemandsraad kan vertrou nie, hoe kan ons staatmaak op hulle om sensitiewe onderhandelings te voer oor hierdie reuse-skuldlas? Waar is ons Belastingbetalersvereniging? Bestaan hulle nog? As Eskom met sy planne voortgaan, sal dit myns insiens neerkom op ’n oortreding van die Grondwet, hoofstuk 2 oor die Handves van Menseregte. Ek is nie ’n regskundige nie, maar ek kan lees. Jy kan nie iemand se diens opskort as daar reeds op ’n gereelde grondslag daarvoor betaal is nie. Ek wonder of die niemandsraad al daaraan gedink het dat as die krag vir die helfte van die dag afgesny word, hul inkomste ook met die helfte gaan verminder. Ek glo nie hulle het nie. Welkom het nie regtig swaarnywerhede nie. As die niemandsraad so aangaan en daar is nie krag nie, dan kan dit net vir die nyweraars ekonomies haalbaar wees om hulle op ’n ander plek te vestig. Dit gaan dan tot verdere werksverliese en ander maatskaplike probleme soos misdaad lei. Ek dink ons, die inwoners, het groter probleme as wat ons regtig besef. (Brief verkort. – Red.)

Child seat a must

THE use of a child car seat for all children under the age of three is compulsory from 1 May. Motorists that have children under the age of three unrestrained in a vehicle will be issued a fine. Several motorists still refuse to take seriously the constant warnings and calls by emergency services and authorities to have children properly restrained in vehicles. On a daily basis while on the road you will find young children jumping on back seats, hanging out of windows and sitting on passengers’ laps. The number of vehicles on the road today has increased drastically. With the number of cars, buses, bikes and other modes of transport we are surrounded by everyday and the number of distractions on the road, there is no better and safer option but to have your child restrained. If your child does not like being restrained, take responsibility and make them understand that it is not up for discussion. The sad truth is ER24 and other emergency services attend to horrific collisions involving children on a weekly basis. The majority of unrestrained children are flung out of vehicles and either sustain critical injuries or die in collisions. For those parents who cannot afford new car seats, remember that there are organisations that sell second-hand car seats or hand them out for an affordable donation. While the law forces parents to use child car seats for children under the age of three, this does not mean that adults should ignore the need to restrain older children. Make sure they are restrained appropriately. Remember you cannot undo death. The choice you make could be the difference between life and death. Make sure your child is appropriately restrained. What is the appropriate restraint for your child? ER24 offers the following advice: ) Infants should ride rear-facing at least until they are a year old. Once they exceed the weight or height limit set by the manufacturer of the infant safety seat, they should continue to ride rear-facing in a convertible safety seat. It is best to keep toddlers rear-facing as long as possible. ) When they have outgrown this seat, they should use a forward-facing safety seat with a full harness. This should be used until they exceed the weight and/or height limit set by the manufacturer of the seat. ) Children who have outgrown a convertible safety seat should use a booster seat until they are at least four feet. ) Children who are tall enough to wear an adult seat belt should still ride in the back seat until they are 13 years old. Adjust the seat belt so the lap belt crosses the child’s upper thighs and the diagonal belt crosses the upper chest at a point between the neck and shoulder. Gert Ferreira, die eienaar van ’n bande-onderneming in Constantiaweg, vertel eienaars van duur voertuie wat nuwe bande wil opsit, sien nie meer kans om deur die watergate voor sy saak te ry nie. Ferreira sê hy is bekommerd dat vragmotors kan wegsink wanneer hulle oor die waterdeurdrenkte stuk pad ry. Die een waterlek is links van sy onderneming en die ander een ’n ent verder weg regs van die onderneming. Die water vloei uit albei lekplekke na mekaar en loop dan in ’n stormwaterdrein byna reg voor sy winkel. Volgens Ferreira het hy al uit pure moedeloosheid opgehou om die probleem aan te meld. Munisipale werkers kom kyk net na die probleem en verdwyn dan weer. Een keer het hulle langs die lekplek gestop, bloot hul kosblikke gevat en middagete geëet voordat hulle gery het. Ferreira sê hy het in ’n stadium oorweeg om ’n private loodgieter te betaal om die probleem op te los. Die munisipaliteit het toe aan hom gesê indien iets sou fout gaan, sal hy verantwoordelik wees vir enige skade.

diate course and are close to completing the advanced course, which is another ten week course. These women will be using their photographic knowledge in their adventures. Kirsty is off to an American Summer Gap as a facilitator, while Tersia is off to work on a cruise ship.

Help police find the killers and relatives of unidentified man THE police are still looking for the relatives and the killers of an unidentified man whose body was found in October last year. A shepherd found the body of a man lying on the R30 road in the bush next to

Jabulani village, Welkom. The body was already decomposed, but a post-mortem established that the man had been shot and his hands had been tied behind his back.

He was wearing black pants and a blue overall jacket. The man’s body is still in the Welkom government mortuary and the police are urgently looking for somebody to identify

’n MYNKAPTEIN se droom om eendag sy eie stukkie grond vir die holte onder sy voet te hê is sowat 11 jaar gelede bewaarheid toe hy ’n klein plasie tussen Odendaalsrus en Riebeeckstad gekoop het. Nou is Inus van Aswegen die eienaar van vyf plasies en het hy ’n groot verskeidenheid wild – van skilpaaie tot kameelperde. Al wat kort is die Groot Vyf. Inus se vrou, Delia, sê die plasie, Del-Ingwe, wat Gees van die Luiperd beteken, is 75 ha groot. “Toe ons dit gekoop het, was dit net ’n stukkie swart afgebrande bos, ’n regte oerwoud.” Sy self het gehelp om takke af te saag om plek vir ’n paadjie te maak. “ ’n Landmeter het die grens afgebaken. Ons het grensdrade gespan en vir water geboor. Ongelukkig is die enigste boorgat

ver van waar ons die huis wou bou. Ons moes water met dromme aanry.” Die eerste wild wat die Van Aswegens gekoop het, was tien springbokke, drie gemsbokke en vyf takbokke. Nou is daar onder meer 15 wildboksoorte, kameelperde, sebras, skilpaaie, ’n nagaap, volstruise, vlakvarke, emoes, ouvolk, ystervarke en plaasdiere. Van die wild moes al uitgedun word. Die eerste boorgat wat naby die huis geboor is, was 84 m diep. Dit is nou ’n netjiese long drop. Aanvanklik is drie rondawels opgesit waar hulle gebly het. “Ons het toe oor ’n huis begin droom. “Ons het alles so ontwerp dat die huis in die somer koel en in die winter warm is. Ons het die huis self gebou.” Die Van Aswegens het later nog vier plase in die omgewing gekoop.

Delia het ’n spogtuin. In haar roostuin is sowat 100 verskillende rose en sy ken elkeen se naam. Sy het ook ’n groentetuin aangelê en daar is verskeie vrugtebome. Die verhitte swembad is ’n aanwins. Ná ’n motorongeluk sukkel Delia met ’n rugprobleem en swem sy gereeld. Inus was van 2007 tot 2009 die Suid-Afrikaanse siertuigkampioen. Twee sebras het hulself al as die oppassers van die klein kameelperdjies aangestel. Die ma’s van die kameelperdjies aanvaar dit maar. Gelukkig laat die sebras darem toe dat die kleintjies aan hul ma’s suip. Inus boer ook met mielies. Iets wat besoekers op die plaas se verbeelding aangryp, is ’n volstruis wat op die tuinier Slow (Joseph Swart) verlief is. Wanneer hy hom sien, voer hy ’n liefdesdans met mening uit.

Clash of choirs starts THE Matjhabeng Publicity Association is hosting this unique choir competition throughout Matjhabeng, something not attempted before in the region. Auditions are held throughout Matjhabeng after which the knock-out rounds will take place. These will all take place at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on 25 and 26 July. The first round of auditions started in Odendaalsrus this past weekend. Those who missed this round still have the chance to audition in Welkom on 13 and 14 June. The public are welcome to attend any

auditions for only a R10 entrance fee. “The Matjhabeng Publicity Association does not want to be seen as an association only interested in the business sector of our region, but rather an association striving to reach and embrace the entire community and business alike,” says Brian Emmenis of the association. “The board also feels that cultural activities, such as Clash of the Choirs, is a positive way to create cohesion and unification among the residents of Matjhabeng. “This is what inspired the Publicity Association to embark on a project like

the Clash of the Choirs competition, in co-ordination with the professional guidance of our theatre manager, Dulcie Harris.” The competition is aimed at schools and adult choirs from Matjhabeng. The winning school choir will walk away with R5 000 in cash and the opportunity to perform at various VIP functions throughout the Northern Free State. The winning adult choir stands the chance of winning R10 000. The winning adult choir will also enjoy major public exposure.

Set to sing stage alight VINCENT BONES, winner of last year’s South African Idols, will be performing at the Goldfields Mall’s Welkom’s Got Talent finals on Saturday (23/05). Bones, who can play piano, drums, bass and saxophone, came to South Africa’s atten tion in the second episode of the historic 10th Idols season – the first time he auditioned as a contestant for a TV show. Vincent Bones’ inspiring life story already touched many South Africans during the au dition phase. After his mom and uncle passed away, Vincent left Eldorado Park on a train at the tender age of 12 to become a street kid in Sunnyside. A stint in Boys Town tur ned his life around. Six months after being crow ned the winner of idols SA season 10, Vincent Bones final ly released his debut offering this week. The 12track album Shaded Soul and is titled was released on Friday, 15 May. The album, which inclu des his popular single Let Me Love You and followup single My Lady,, is being billed as an eclectic mix of house music, bal lads, hip hop, a bit of Afrosoul and elements of rock. “The al bum was inspired by my family who are my pillars of strength and it is dedicated to my late mother, Dorah Bones. Speke sing SES fietsryers van Welkom het gedurende April aan â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n uithouren by Oudtshoorn gaan deelneem. Die roete is 360 km lank en die jaers ry 360Â° reg rondom Oudtshoorn. Met 5 800 m se strawwe klimritte word die fietsryers se stamina behoorlik getoets. Die Welkomiete het almal binne die 36 toegelate ure die wedren voltooi. Louis Stevens het die beste gevaar en die ren in 20 uur 9 minute voltooi. Die ryers is van links Dougie Leech, Cordel Buys, Ernst Safar, Piet du Toit, Erna du Toit en Stevens. Du Toit en Stevens het die wedren al drie keer gery. CLUB HOLDS FUN WALK: On 9 May the Reitzpark Masters Football Club held a fun walk in Reitzpark for the awareness of various forms of crime including xenophobic attacks. The organisers plan to make the fun walk a regular event. The Reitzpark community supported the day in good numbers. Die Putter-broers se pa, Jannie, is vir die vyfde jaar die SuidAfrikaanse veterane-kampioen. Ferreira is ook vereer as die beste nuweling-vergooier.

Tree as eerste wenner uit die stryd DIE Rovers-rugbyklub is die eerste klub wat die Griffons se kroon in die eerste liga van die Uitdaagbeker dra. Die Griffons se nuwe Uitdaagbekertoernooi is vanjaar begin. Rovers en die Kroonstad-rugbyklub se eerste spanne het sake in die eindstryd uitgespook. Teen rustyd was Rovers 7-19 agter, maar die Welkomiete het in die tweede helfte verbete ingeklim en ’n paar keer blitsig punte aangeteken. Rovers het eindelik met 28-19 geseëvier.
