Dead baby boy found
Police investigating case of concealment of birth Alet van der Walt A SHOCKING discovery was made in an open veld in Seemeeupark on Monday (18/05). Welkom resident Alexander Bongani was walking through the park between Lindsay and Starford Road when he saw a transparent plastic bag with what seemed to be the tiny body of a baby inside. Bongani told Vista he had been so shocked and upset, that he had at first fled the scene. But he then stopped and called the police, as well as emergency services. The body of a baby boy with the placenta still intact was found in the plastic bag. Marchant Jacobs, a paramedic with the Department of Health, confirmed to Vista that the baby had already been dead when emergency services arrived at the scene. The police are investigating a case of concealment of birth. It is alleged that a woman and later a man were seen in the area shortly before the body was discovered. The man hurried from the scene when the police and ambulance arrived. ) New-born babies represent
about 65% of the abandoned children in South Africa. Only about a third (of abandoned new-borns) survives being left unprotected in places such as toilets, the open veld, dustbins and even dumping sites. The House of Hope in Stateway, Welkom, offers support to mothers who want to give their babies up for adoption. The Zoe Life Centre and House of Hope also assist mothers in dealing with the trauma of rape, adoption and others issues concerning unwanted pregnancies. “It is heartbreaking that a baby has died in the same vicinity where the Zoe Life Centre offers help to prevent this kind of tragedy,” said Past. Jackie Botes. ) The Zoe Life Centre in Welkom is situated at 226 Stateway. This is Welkom’s centre for pregnant teenagers and women who are distressed due to an unwanted pregnancy. The centre’s goal is to restore the emotional well-being of those traumatised by the effects of an unplanned pregnancy. The centre is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. For more information, do not hesitate to call 072-882-3198.

Residents unite against name changes Marti Will HUNDREDS of residents are planning to meet in North Park on Friday (22/05) afternoon to attend the public hearing about the street name changes which will take place in the TS du Plessis Hall at 16:00. The March Against Crime Facebook page has organised this public gathering, which will start at 14:30, as a gesture of solidarity. The residents will then attend
the public meeting at 16:00. People can read about the proposed event on the Facebook page. The citizens of Welkom and Thabong can sway the pending decision of Mathabo Leeto, MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, to change the street names in Welkom. Irate residents say this is fruitless and wasteful expenditure. Emotions are running high as the real issues X incessant water leaks, potholes causing serious
damage to vehicles and sewage flooding homes X escalate on a daily basis. “Officials at the municipality say there is no money or personnel to attend to the ever-increasing infrastructure collapse,” says one resident who has been reporting a water leak in Rosalind Street, Bedelia, since 2014. Residents say this is an election ploy of the ANC. “Or it is a way of the MEC to take the attention away from the
