Policeman mourned Wife amongst the four suspects in custody for the murder Teboho Setena NOMALANGA PAULINA CONCOSHI, the wife of slain policeman, const. Mbuyisela James Concoshi, will not attend his funeral as she and three male suspects in the murder case remain in custody. She was a notable absentee at her husband’s memorial service held at the Welkom police station yesterday (27/01). The late Concoshi (34) will be buried on Saturday in his hometown of Fauresmith. The deceased officer’s wife and co-accused Kopano Samuel Mojanago, Basie Stephen Ndude and Papiki James Mateisi will remain behind bars until their next appearance on 2 February when they are expected to apply for bail. The foursome appeared briefly in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (26/01), facing a charge of murder. On their appearance they were informed of their rights, including bail application and the right to seek state or private legal representation. They were also informed of the possibilities of the state adding two charges, perjury and armed robbery, to the murder charge to increase the charges to three. None of the accused, Concoshi, Mateisi, Ndude and Mojanago were asked to plead to the charge of murder. South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), known as the Hawks, said the suspects were arrested last Sunday, hardly six days after Concoshi’s murder. The arrest followed intensive investigation into the mystery surrounding the officer’s murder. He had a severe open wound on the head and was strangled to death, the police reported. Robert Netshiunda, spokesperson of the Hawks, said the suspects were taken into custody after finding possible incriminating evidence linking them with Concoshi’s murder. The late officer’s body was discovered placed on the rear seat of his private vehicle, a Polo Classic, with the key still in the ignition. The vehicle was parked on the side of the M4 road, which borders the Riebeeckstad suburb and Thandanani, a residential settlement (commonly known as 2010). It is still not clear where the assailants murdered Concoshi. The victim’s colleagues and family paid tribute at a memorial service yesterday (27/01). One after another, they expressed

I NORMALLY write letters to the paper in Afrikaans. This one is in English to show my support for Councillor Toy Beneke. His letter yet again shows the incompetence of the council, which I have dubbed “the niemandsraad.” Yes, it shows the sheer insanity of creating a rubbish dump near an electrical substation. How is it possible that the office of the city engineer was unaware of this? How is it possible that no safety inspections were carried out in this area? Or, was it perhaps done, and, as is customary with this council, nothing has been done about it. When one has been asking for almost two years for a globe to be replaced in a short streetlight, about two and a half metres high, that can easily be reached with an ordinary ladder; and for water leaks to be fixed that have wasted megalitres of water for years on end, in

spite of the drought, one can quite believe that nothing about this has been POSBUS /P.O. BOX 1027 said, reported or done. WELKOM 9460 I call upon all businesses in this area to ensure that their insurance are up to date, especially the fire insurance. Experience has shown that only one in three businesses reopens after being destroyed by fire. The fact that the mayor wants to shake the tree so that all the bad apples fall off is a disgrace. Municipality may not cut off supply PAPI MABELE, Welkom: THE past week it has come to my attention that the accounts of people who are in arrears and whose municipal services have been terminated have been made public. A close family friend of mine told me how officials and a sub-contractor from the Matjhabeng Municipality had completely terminated her water supply after she missed a month’s payment of R1 280. Is the municipality allowed to cut off any resident’s water supply? What residents do not know is that there is a Municipal System Act with its accompanying bylaws in place to make sure municipalities and residents are well protected and the correct procedures are followed. According to the Act (Act 32 of 2000), a municipality may consolidate accounts where an account has not been settled in full and the resident may not elect how the outstanding amount is to be paid off. A municipality has the right to restrict or disconnect electricity, and this right

shall prevail notwithstanding the fact that payment has been made in respect of any specified service. With regards to water supply, Regulation 3 of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 stipulates that a minimum quantity of potable water, of 25 liters per person per day, or six kiloliters per household per month must be provided. Section 27(1)(b) of the constitution stipulates that everyone has the right to have access to sufficient food and water. South African courts have further ruled that no person can be denied the basic 6000 liters of water per household per month, irrespective of the status of their account. So, this would mean Matjhabeng Municipality is contravening the National Water Act and constitutional rights of residents by completely terminating water supply to their homes. ) Information supplied by Lavern Gounden, an associate in ENSafrica’s Property and Real Estate department as appeared on The Times newspaper.

They set the rubbish and litter alight which caused the pump station and electrical sub-station to catch fire. Thousands of rands of the tax payers’ money are being wasted by their “don’t care attitude.”

Five to appear in court FIVE of the six men X including a police sergeant X accused of robbing and murdering Messiah Mlambo in January 2014, will appear in the Circuit High Court in Kroonstad in March. The suspects are Pule Molelekoa, former Sergeant Ezekiel Matlokotsi, Lucky Marotholi, Petrus Ntema and Jacob Sekonyela. The sixth accused Emmanuel Skosana reportedly died last November. The suspects last appeared in the Welkom Regional Court in October. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Welkom police spokesperson, said investigations were ongoing to link a seventh suspect with

Mlambo’s murder and robbery at his house in Dagbreek. He said the suspects posed as policemen, drove police vehicles and wore police reflective jackets at the time of the incident. They allegedly demanded to search Mlambo’s house. During the incident one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the deceased and demanded money. They apparently suffocated the deceased with a plastic bag until he died. This was done in the presence of his wife and ten-year-old child. The suspects took R70 000 in cash and drove off in state vehicles. Investigation by the Hawks in Welkom led to the arrest of six suspects.

Wonderwerkvrou sien weer Molly Green LYNETTE OLIVIER (57) het geen probleme met die hart wat op 5 November 2011 op haar oorgeplant is nie. Dit was die hart van ’n jong man en dié hart klop sterk. Al waarmee sy nou sukkel is haar oë. In ’n stadium was sy heeltemal blind. Sy het egter positief gebly en al wat sy van die Here gevra het, is dat Sy woord haar mond moet vul. Haar blindheid het sy aanvaar. “Ek het vir die Here gesê as dit Sy wil is dat ek blind moet wees, dan berus ek daarin. “Skielik het my een oog begin verbeter. Aanvanklik kon ek rooi en blou sien. Nou is my sig heelwat beter.” Tot verlede Maandag (25/01) was haar ander oog nog heeltemal blind. “Toe ek opstaan kon ek sien. Ek kon dit nie glo nie. Ek kan selfs nou my motor bestuur.” Lynette sê haar probleme met haar oë het sowat ’n jaar nadat sy die hartoorplanting gehad het, begin. “Ek het in die tuin gewerk. Ek vermoed ek het ontwater en ek het in ’n koma gegaan. “Toe ek bykom, kon ek niks onthou nie. Dit was verskriklik toe ek besef ek kan niks sien nie. “Ek het gedink ek was besig om dood te gaan.” Toetse is gedoen en twee oogspesialiste, die een ’n professor, het gesê my oë is permanent beskadig.” Sy was baie swak en moes weer leer loop. AT the ripe old age of 100 years, granny Adelinah Thelingoane from Thabong is still going strong. Her eyesight is still good and her mind is clear. Last Saturday (23/01) everything possible was done to make this milestone in her life a memorable occasion Her only son, Pheko Pau (68), says although his mother’s eyesight is still good, her hearing is not perfect anymore. “She is still healthy and her favourite food is porridge and milk and chicken wings.” Granny Adelinah went to school in Thaba Nchu near Bloemfontein. She and her late husband moved to Thabong in 1963. They were in the coal business. Granny Aselinah also has three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Vrou se HART klop vir diere Molly Green KAREN FERREIRA wat van ongedissiplineerde honde, gehoorsame, liefdevolle diere maak, is nou betrokke by die Helping Animals Recover from Trauma (HART). Sy is die enigste persoon in die Goudveld wat opgelei is om wilde diere te rehabiliteer sodat hulle weer in die natuur vrygelaat kan word. Sy het drie kursusse – beginners, gevorderd en gespesialiseerd – by HART geslaag. HART is sowat 14 jaar gelede deur Yvette Volter op ’n plaas naby Kroonstad begin. Sy het ’n doktorsgraad in kliniese sielkunde. Volgens haar is HART die enigste sentrum van sy soort in die land. By dié sentrum word alle wilde diere, soos onder meer uile, ander voëlsoorte, aardvarke, slange, krimpvarkies, bokke, ape, roofvoëls en bobbejane, gehelp. “Ons missie is om alle diere weer vry te laat.” HART bedien die hele Vrystaat. Yvette sê talle van die diere en voëls loop die gevaar om uitgewis te word. Sy het drie heeltydse helpers, maar maak ook van vrywilligers gebruik. HART, wat van donasies afhanklik is, probeer om ’n stewige netwerk op te bou. ’n Groot probleem waarmee HART worstel, is die talle uile wat raakgery word,

veral naby Sasolburg. Die gaskunstenaar vanjaar is Jak de Priester, wat op 5 Maart op dié geleentheid onder die sterrehemel sal optree. Die Vrystaatstreek se SANParke-ereveldwagters reël die konsert in die bos, die tweede ná die sukses van Chris Chameleon se optrede in April verlede jaar in dié park. Die opbrengs gaan vir bewaringsprojekte in Mokala en om die park, wat ’n tuiste vir baie bedreigde spesies is, te bemark. Dié jongste nasionale park in die land is 70 km suid van Kimberley. Elsa van Staden, ereveldwagter en hooforganiseerder van die konsert, sê die konsert word onder die sterrehemel in die ongerepte veld in ’n besonderse deel van die wildpark aangebied. “Mense wat verlede jaar se geleentheid bygewoon het, kan getuig hoe besonders dié ervaring in die pragtige natuur is,” sê Van Staden. Kaartjies vir die konsert word as deel van ’n pakket verkoop. Dit sluit twee nagte se verblyf en twee aandetes vir twee mense in. Kaartjiepryse hang af van die ruskamp waar gaste wil tuisgaan. The members in this group are Thato Noka, Nyaredi Buyane, Mofokeng Lehlohonolo and Mogunye Fusi. Their music, which is mostly in the Afro-Soul style, consists of existing songs along with original material. Their music is defined by their own arrangement style, tight vocal harmonies, deep and steady vocal bass lines, and a diverse range of vocal percussions. Immortal Voices was formed in 2014 and came to prominence in 2015 after recording an original song titled “Nontsikalle”. It was listed on Welkom’s community station The Rock FM and the group competed in a local talent show, Welkom’s Got Talent. From then the group has performed at various events, including weddings, graduations, matric dances, and numerous other big events. Immortal Voices, which started as Uxula De Song, started out with fourteen members, but towards the end of 2014 the group was left with only three members. Thato Noka, Mogunye Fusi and Paul Mpeta (who is now the group’s manager), started performing at their school, Lekga-

rietse Secondary, and they were received very well by their fellow schoolmates and teachers. They then decided to go and perform outside their school – that’s when they met Nyaredi Boyane and Mofokeng Lehlohonolo. Mofokeng Lehlohonolo is the soprano, backing vocalist and a song writer; Nyaredi Boyane is the counter tenor (lead) and backing vocalist; Thato Noka is the tenor (lead), baritone (backing) and Mogunye Fusi is the vocal bass and vocal percussionist. Early in 2015 the group changed its name to Immortal Voices and competed in the Welkom’s Got Talent show. Although they didn’t win the competition, they became very popular in Welkom. In 2015 they met a producer named Sojane Leballo, popularly known as Earl Bea Beats, who became their arranger and sound engineer. The group went on to record seven songs and released two singles – “Thank you Mama”, which was also played at the QwaQwa community radio station, and “Nontsikalle”. The tracks were well received by the people of Welkom and QwaQwa. This feat has seen the group being mentioned amongst the best in the Free State a capella circles.

WITH an impressive reputation in musical performance, Thembisile Caleni is now looking for his big break. He was one of the top three finalists that vied for the Welkom’s Got Talent crown in 2015. He went by the stage name Osama Bin Singing in the music talent search competition. He was up against Raga Muffin and Goodness Makau, who was crowned as the winner. Since the competition, Caleni has gone a step further. He completed a single track to launch his promising musical career. Titled “Turn Up”, this is a self-composed single featuring his vocals. He teamed up with a pair of local DJ’s known as 2 Point 1 in producing the single house genre track. “It is a different genre than what is expected of me. I decided on the house beat because of its influence. Music is something I love,” said Caleni. The hard work to produce the single began last year, and it is set to be promoted it in 2016. Caleni is hopeful that the single will see him live up to expectations in the tough music industry. He said the title of the single was taken from language party lovers often use. “People who like partying ‘turn up’ at an occasion, they don’ show up. So the title originates there,” said Caleni. Caleni’s ability in and love for music has resulted in interest to do cover versions of talented local boy and nationally established singer, songwriter and producer, Presss, real name Preston Sihlangu. He believes exploration will be fitting to his mission to launch his music career. The cover version of the inspiring song is from Presss’ latest double album, Black. Originating from Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus, Caleni is no novice in music. During 2011 and 2012, he worked and performed with local group Afro Related that performed as an in-house band on the Thursday Night Show at the Coobah Club in Welkom. “Interest and love for music has always been there. I used to sing different songs by various artists that include Brenda Fassie and Caiphus Semenya. I also sang gospel at primary school, and “Ag Shame Lovey” by Brenda was one of my favourites. Caleni currently works with his manager Nkosana Miya, alias Mokash, to achieve his dream.

Puppy rescued from box A LITTLE pup was found sealed in a box at the Odendaalsrus dumping grounds on Saturday. The box had been taped closed with duct tape. A lady that had gone to dump some rubbish heard his cries and set off to find him. She found the box and rescued him. Together with others at the dumping site, they searched the area to make sure there were no other pups. We would like to thank the lady for rescuing the pup. If anyone can provide us with information regarding

the puppy, we will be extremely grateful. We would like to trace the heartless disgrace to the human race that did this, and charge the person with animal cruelty. Inwoners staan saam Alet van der Walt

DIE gemeenskap van Bronville het hier begin om die strate van hul woonbuurte van misdadigers terug te eis. Inwoners van Hanipark het reeds sedert begin Januarie besluit genoeg is genoeg. Volgens die Bronville-polisiekantoor se stasiebevelvoerder, lt.kol. Theledi Gopane, is daar reeds ’n afname in misdaad. Gemeenskapspatrollies kom gereeld by die ingang van Hanipark byeen en beweeg dan in vier groepe deur die strate van Hanipark. Die afgelope Vrydag het Stoffel Sithole, ’n

leier van die groep mense, gesê die doel is nie om mense te mishandel nie, maar om rus en vrede in die woonbuurt te herstel. Misdaad moet bekamp word. Pat Chabangu, ook een van die groepleiers, het aan die mans gesê hulle kan nie meer met arms gevou sit en verwag die polisie moet alleen misdaad bekamp nie. Dit is die gemeenskap se plig om ook te help om misdaad uit die woonbuurte te hou. Gopane het ook aan ander woonbuurte in Bronville ’n versoek gerig om soos Hanipark met hul eie teenmisdaadveldtogte te begin.

Seized food for Zama-Zamas ON Tuesday (26/01) at 12:20 the Welkom Cluster task team members received a tip-off about a house in Flamingo park, Welkom, where food parcels meant for Zama-Zamas were being packed. Upon arrival the police searched the house and the garage. Inside the garage they found biltong packed inside plastic containers and sealed with masking tape. The owner of the house, a 45-year-old man, was arrested and the biltong valued at R28 000 was seized. The suspect will soon appear in Welkom Magistrate’s Court. Police firearm found at tow-in Alet van der Walt

POLICE from the Thabong police station found the firearm of a high ranking police officer at a local tow-in company on Monday. Vista received confidential information from an anonymous source on Monday night that the commander of a local police unit lost his police-issue firearm after it was confiscated by the Thabong Police. The source told Vista that the commander used his son’s motor vehicle and forgot his police-issue handgun in the car on Sunday night. On Monday morning, the son was allegedly in a light accident with the car, a VW Golf, and the car was towed in. The police commander in the meantime realised that he left his firearm in the car and phoned the tow-in company. Employees of the company found the weapon and took it to the office. Coincidentally, police officials of the Thabong police station went to the towing company the same morning and saw the firearm. They recognised it as a police-issue handgun and confiscated it. Last year the civil rights group Afriforum revealed that more than 6 000 firearms were

lost by police officials during the period of 2009 to 2014. Of those, 3 576 firearms were stolen and another 3 026 were reported lost. The SAPS said in a media statement that it can confirm that the said firearm was handed in at the Thabong police station and was entered in the SAPS 13 store for safekeeping. Standard procedure with regard to instances of negligent loss of a firearm and also the loss of official SAPS firearms will be followed. A criminal case of Negligent Loss of a Firearm case is opened in accordance with the Firearm Control Act, Act 60 of 2000. Departmentally steps for members of the SAPS are instituted based on misconduct because of the transgression of the said Act as well as in terms of the Code of Conduct of the SAPS. These criminal and departmental cases are then investigated. In terms of Section 102, a person can also be declared unfit to possess a firearm in the future when the person is found guilty in court on a case of negligent loss of a firearm as in this case. These procedures will also be followed in the case of the loss of firearm in the case of the police commander.

Marathon weer ’n sukses Molly Green ALTESAAM 680 atlete het vanjaar aan die gewilde Mielie-marathon in Welkom deelgeneem. Dit was die 38ste keer wat dié marathon oor drie verskillende afstande aangebied is. Die 42 km-marathon is aangedurf oor ’n sirkel roete van Welkom deur Odendaalsrus en terug na Welkom. Die wedlope het begin en geëindig by die sportterrein van die Hoër Tegniese Skool (HTS) Welkom in Volksweg. Uitstaande waterpunte was op die roetes beskikbaar. Daar was vanjaar nuwe roetes vir die 10 km- en 21 km-wedlope. Die bekende langsem Louis Massyn het vanjaar sy 35ste Mielie-marathon voltooi. Hy sê hy het ’n moeilike wedloop gehad. “Ek het van die 32km-merk met krampe gesukkel.” Louis het die marathon in 4:32:45 voltooi. In 1984 het hy die marathon in ’n tyd van 2:40:15 gewen. Die eerste Mielie-Marathon is in 1979 van Wesselsbron na Odendaalsrus gehou. Altesaam 99 atlete het daardie dag die wedloop voltooi. Die Mielie-marathon is die oudste

HAAR droom is om SuidAfrika in 2020 op die Olimpiese Spele te verteenwoordig en sy gaan alles moontlik doen om dié droom te verwesenlik. Só sê Sandra le Grange (22), ’n Protea-pluimbalspeler, wat onlangs ’n Welkomiet geword het. Sy is een van die nuwe onderwysers wat haar kragte by Goudveld-Hoërskool ingewerp het. Sy gee Engels en liggaamsopvoeding (LO). Sandra straal deursettingsvermoë en toewyding uit. Dié enigste kind van Ewald en Tokkie le Grange is in Welkom gebore, maar het in Kimberley grootgeword. Albei haar ouers was geesdriftige pluimbalspelers. “Toe ek drie jaar oud was, kon ek al ’n pluimbalveer raakslaan, maar ek het eers as negejarige amptelik pluimbal begin speel.” Sandra en haar Proteapluimbal-dubbelspelmaat, Jennifer Fry van Johannesburg, het in 2015 die Suid-Afrikaanse dubbels

in Pretoria gewen. Daarna het hulle aan die Statebondspele in Glasgow deelgeneem, waar hulle in die kwarteindronde deur die goue-medaljewenners uitgeskakel is. Sandra en Jennifer het ook in Maart 2015 aan die Wêreldkampioenskappe in China deelgeneem. “Ons het 27ste in die spankompetisie gekom. Dit is die beste wat die Proteas nog gevaar het. Ons het vir twee weke net noodles geeet,” skerts sy. In Maart verlede jaar het sy en Jennifer aan die Afrika-spele in die Kongo deelgeneem. Pluimbalspelers van sowat 40 lande het deelgeneem. “Ons moes met ’n silwermedalje tevrede wees.” Sandra geniet dit in Welkom. Sy beoog om pluimbal in die Goudveld te bevorder en sal graag veral kinders betrokke wil kry. Die man in Sandra se lewe is Andries Malan. Hy is ook ’n Protea-pluimbalspeler en is ’n Bloemfonteiner. Toe sy nog in Bloemfontein was, het sy sowat vyf ure ’n dag geoefen.

SANDRA LE GRANGE se droom is om in 2020 aan die Olimpiese Spele deel te neem.

TALENT spotters of Premiership football giants SuperSport United have found the Harmony Sport Academy a happy hunting ground. The club has enlisted another upcoming player touted as a gem in Felix Noge to strengthen the junior side campaigning in the Diski MultiChoice League. This brings to two the number of players recruited in 2015 by SuperSport from the Free State academy. The other one is Teboho Mokoena. Noge was recruited at the end of December while Mokoena was enlisted in September. Noge, a natural left-footed winger-cum-defender was an integral part of Harmony Sport Academy’s football side under influential coach Pitso Mokoena. The prospective star player, who originates from the tiny town of Ficksburg,

was part of the South African junior men’s national u.17 side that won a silver medal at the 2015 CAF African Youth Championship final in Niamey, Niger. The team also qualified for the 2015 Fifa u.17 World Cup, but faltered. The junior side was guided by coach Molefi Ntseki, who also had a lengthy stint as football coach of the Free State academy. Gilbert Matlokotsi, another protege of the academy, is also on SuperSport’s wantedlist. The left-footed player attended trials last year. The trio of Matlokotsi, Noge and Mokoena were instrumental in the achievement of the Harmony High School, helping to steer the school to win the provincial leg of schools tournaments. These competitions include the Engen Knockout Challenge for u.17 boys and the Sanlam Kay Motsepe u.19 championship.
