Runner makes top 10 JOSEPH MPHUTI of Sibanye Beatrix Operations made his employer and colleagues proud when he came sixth in this year’s Comrades Ultra Marathon. Mphuti said he had to work hard to do so well in the “race of courage” and he trained rigorously throughout the year. He completed the 90 km race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in 5:54:29, beating 13 006 other participants. “I entered the Mielie Marathon and took second place, I won the Vaal Marathon, I came second in the Loskop and in the Wilge Marathon (42 km) I came third,” said Mphuti. Karel de Lange, vice president of Beatrix Mining Operations, congratulated Mphuti for his outstanding achievement and thanked him for putting the company and the Free State on the map. Mphuti was supported by Daniel Mokhathi, his coach, the Sibanye sports team, Simosakhe Hafula, sports officer, and Benji Monyane, superintendent of sport, throughout the race.

Headmistress passes away Aurora Primary

Marti Will IT is with tremendous sadness that Welkom says goodbye to one of its legacies, Alice Seiderer, headmistress of the Aurora Primary School, who passed away over this past (13/06) weekend after a short illness. Alice was born to Joe and Patsy-May Seiderer on 16 February 1952 in Johannesburg. She completed her schooling at the Claredon High School in East London, and her teaching qualifications in Johannesburg. On completion of her teaching qualifications, Alice came to Welkom and started teaching at the Aurora Primary School in 1974. She first lived with her parents and then stayed with Clive and Sally Ulyate. Dearly loved by every learner she taught English to over the years, Alice will not be forgotten. “Our Alice was always bubbly, giving the most amazing humorous comments. She was always positive and inspirational in her outlook on life. She was a very compassionate and a precious friend to all. Alice was unique. “We know God’s timing is perfect in His will and because Jesus Christ is our Lord, we will see each other again in heaven. Her passing

ALICE KATHLEEN SEIDERER completed her TT HD in 1973. She started her teaching career at the Aurora Primary School in 1974, completing her BA degree at the end of that year at the University of South Africa (Unisa), with English and Psychology as majors. As an authority in her subject, she was awarded merits from the Department of Education in 1982 and 1984. She was promoted to head of department (HOD) in 1987, with the promotion to deputy principal in 1998. The highlight of her career came when she was appointed as principal at the Aurora Primary School in 2000, making her the first female principal in the Goldfields of a former model C school. During her illustrious teaching career spanning 42 years, she served on various educational committees and spearheaded a large variety of innovative projects. These

altered the preset ideas and customs in education and transformed her school, which was her passion, into one of the leading English primary schools in the Goldfields. Her teaching career and leadership can be defined by a quote from Nelson Mandela, one of her personal icons: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” She will be dearly missed by her Aurora family, past and present.

Die eienaars van die woongebiede en nywerheidsgebiede is eintlik die werkgewers en die raad die werknemers. Daarom is dit die werkgewer se reg om alle dokumentasie aangaande die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit se finansiële posisie te kan inspekteer, wat nie gedoen word nie. Dit is hoog tyd dat alle politieke partye uit die raad verwyder word, en die belastingbetaler weer die stad oorneem. Dit is hul eiendomme wat ter sprake is. Die politieke raadslede kyk net na hul sak en sien net hoeveel hulle bymekaar kan maak. As daar ’n ondersoek gedoen word, word die betrokke ondersoekbeampte wat dit waag om die ondersoek te begin geskors, want hulle dink hulle is bo die wet. Dan ’n vraag aan die agbare burgemeester. Is dit net die Kamer van Koophandel en besigheidsmense wat van belang is? Wat van die eienaars van die wooneenhede, is hulle nie ook belangrik nie? Is dit te veel gevra dat daar wykvergaderings gehou word, en dat die inwoners ingelig word? Hoe gaan die raad die slegste verslag wat nog deur die ouditeur-generaal se kantoor oor ’n munisipaliteit se finansiële posisie

Bid farewell THE Welkom SAPS Flying Squad re cently bid farewell to one of its longest serving members, Sgt Stanere Petrus Nhlapo, who recent ly retired and was at work for the last ti me on 5 June. LOST IN FIRE: A 29yearold man, Sibusiso Wili, last week ap peared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court for arson after he had burnt down the house of his girlfriend. He visited his girl friend’s house in Thabong and started to argue with her fami ly. Wili allegedly left the house with his twomonthold son. He returned with a sword and broke down the kitchen door. He also threw bricks through the windows. He left but again returned and set the house alight. A fouryearold boy suffered burns. The police managed to arrest the arsonist soon after. Const. Ntombenhle Monnaruri was at the burntdown house. The police have asked the community to help the family who lost all their possessions during the incident. THE body of a newborn baby boy was found by a passer-by in the open veld adjacent to Linsdsay and Starford Road in Seemeeupark, Welkom, on 18 May. The passer-by found the baby wrapped in a transparent plastic bag. He contacted the Welkom police and Emergency services. The baby was certified dead at the scene. Haar een buurvrou se kat is in die straat doodgeskiet gevind. ’n Buurman se kat het ook ’n koeëlwond opgedoen, terwyl ander katte net verdwyn het. Tania het een middag, net toe sy haar kat in die tuin wou optel, gevoel hoe ’n dwaalkoeël uit ’n windbuks op haar voet te lande kom. Tania se mannetjieskat, Ty, is die skieter van Steynstraat se jongste slagoffer. Sy vertel hoe Ty een aand uit die huis gegaan het – minute later het die kat verskrik die huis ingestorm en sy kon sien sy been bloei. Ty het baie pyn verduur en die spiere in die been het by die skietwond uitgepeul. Sy het Ty veearts toe gevat en dié het x-strale geneem om te sien wat fout is. ’n Windbuks-koeël is deur Ty se been en die kat sal nou skroewe in sy been moet kry. Tania sê die veeartskoste beloop al duisende rande en haar kat verduur steeds baie pyn. Sy het die Hennenman-polisie-

Mphuti ies the Sibanye ag high at the Comrades Marathon

Joseph Mphuti, 38, from Frankfort in the Free State put Sibanye’s Beatrix Operations on the map when he came out 6 in this year’s Comrades Marathon. He conquered the “race of courage” when he completed the 90km race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in 5:54:29, beating 13006 other participants. “My preparations for the Comrades included rigorous training and participating in races. I entered the Millie marathon (42km), where I nished second in 2:19:07, the Vaal marathon (42km) in 2:30:12 and in the rst position, the Loskop (50km) in 2:52:03 and in second positon and lastly the Wilge marathon (42 km) where I nished in third position in 2:28:12.” Karel de Lange, Vice President: Beatrix Mining Operations, congratulated Joseph for his outstanding achievement and thanked him for putting the Company and the Free State province on the map. Joseph was supported throughout the race by his coach, Daniel Mokhathi and the Sibanye`s sports team; sports ofcer Simosakhe Hafula and superintendent of sports, Benji Monyane.

Jong ma draai by die dood om Molly Green AS daar nie genoeg bloed beskikbaar was met die geboorte van haar seuntjie, Sion, nie, was Christine vandag nie meer hier nie. Sy het onder meer 34 eenhede bloed ontvang, asook 20 eenhede bloedplaatjies en 26 eenhede bevrore plasma. Haar chirurg, dr. Johan Spangenberg, het die eerste nag by haar in ’n bedjie in die teater geslaap en die volgende aand in die waakeenheid. In ’n stadium wou die bloedverskaffer weet of die pasiënt vir al die bloed sou kon betaal. Die rekening het toe reeds op meer as R500 000 gestaan. Die dokter se antwoord was: Haar lewe móét gered word. Dié jong vrou ly aan placenta praevia, ’n toestand waarin die plasenta baie laag in die uterus is en naby die serviks en dit selfs kan bedek. Dit kan erge bloeding in die geboorteproses veroorsaak. Toe ’n keisersnit gedoen is, het die plasenta losgeskeur en ernstige bloeding veroorsaak. Die plasenta was ook aan haar blaas vasgegroei. Christine het van die begin van haar tweede swangerskap probleme ondervind. Sedert sy vyf weke swanger was, moes sy kort-kort in die hospitaal opgeneem word. “Terwyl ek in die hospitaal was, kon ek darem so twee keer per week met ’n rolstoel na die kafeteria ry.” Frans (39), haar man, het elke dag voor werk hul dogtertjie, Milana (2), hospitaal toe gebring sodat sy haar ma voor kleuterskool kon groet. Smiddae het Frans en Milana saam met Christine middagete in die Mediclinic Welkom geëet. Saans was pa en dogter weer daar en is Milana in die hospitaal gebad. Christine was altesaam 62 dae in die hospitaal.

Kort-kort kontraksies gekry Van 1 Julie 2014 het sy kort-kort kontraksies gekry. Die dokters wou nie kanse waag nie. Op 17 Julie is ’n noodkeisersnit uitgevoer. Sy was toe 32 weke swanger en die baba het 2 kg geweeg. Frans sê hy was by tot met die laaste sny. “Toe spuit die bloed. Ek was nie soveel bloed te wagte nie. Ek het eers na die naaste stoel gegryp toe ek hoor ons baba is buite gevaar. Sy longontwikkeling was twee uit vier en daar was nie werklik rede tot kommer nie. “Ek was báie bekommerd oor Christine. Sy het twee keer totaal en al uitgebloei.” Die gemiddelde mens se liggaam bevat tussen vyf en sewe liter bloed. Sy was meer as agt uur in die teater. “Daar was net twee eenhede bloed in die teater en vyf in die hospitaal.” Bloed is van Bloemfontein aangevra. Die eerste aand het Christine reeds 17 eenhede bloed ontvang. Sy was tien dae lank in die waakeenheid van die hospitaal. “Ek was baie swak en het aanvanklik gedink my baba is dood. Eers toe die verpleegsters vir my kaartjies met afdrukke van sy handjies en voetjies bring, het ek besef my kind leef. Foto’s het ook gehelp.” Spesiale oomblik met Sion Christine het Sion die eerste keer ontmoet toe hy tien dae oud was. “Die verpleegkundige het hom na my toe gebring, hom kaal uitgetrek en teen my bors neergesit,” vertel sy. “Daardie gevoel sal ek nooit vergeet nie. Dit was ’n baie spesiale oomblik. Daar was onmiddellik ’n sterk band tussen ons. “Ek was baie swak. Soms het ek gevoel soos ’n 80-jarige in ’n 30-jarige se liggaam. “Dit het my lank gevat om my kragte te herwin.

Frans sê hulle is baie deur familie en vriende ondersteun. “Sonder hulle weet ek nie hoe ons die mas sou opkom nie.” Christine sê hul lewensuitkyk en waardes het heeltemal verander. “Ons is baie nader aan mekaar.” Nóg ’n skok wat Frans beleef het, was toe sy vrou ’n hartstilstand gekry het. “Ek het rustig by haar gesit en gesels toe sy skielik stuiptrekkings begin kry.” Spangenberg was binne drie minute daar. “Die vyf minute wat ek buite gewag het, het soos ’n leeftyd gevoel.”

Christine se hart het teen alle verwagting in self en spontaan weer aan die klop gegaan. Sy is twee keer weer teater toe om seker te maak die bloeding is ten volle gestop. Sy moes egter weer bloed en bloedplaatjies ontvang. Christine is op 2 Augustus 2014 ontslaan. Frans is ’n toegewyde bloedskenker. En dit is juis danksy onbaatsugtige bloedskenkers soos hy dat Christine se lewe gered kon word. Frans en Christine, wat albei rekenmeesters is, het in die Goudveld grootgeword. Frans het van 2000 tot 2004 stut vir die Griffons gespeel.

SPREADING HOPE: The Wesley Guild, a youth organisation of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Welkom Circuit 604, visited the Merafong Youth Centre in Seemeeupark on Saturday (13/06). This is a youth centre for orphans in Welkom and it depends entirely on donations received from the public. They spent the whole day with the orphans, playing with them, teaching them about drugs and substance abuse and giving them hope as siblings in Christ. The youth group also handed out food parcels and clothes to the centre.

THE Good News Centre in Thabong gave food parcels to needy people in the community. Three families received these parcels, while other residents also received clothes. Past. THE Charity Cup Tournament took place on Workers' Day. The tournament benefitted 168 farm children who live at the Harmony Hostel. The event took place at the Unitas Secondary School's sports grounds. Six soccer teams of government departments and three college teams took part in the event. Sport was used to help fight poverty and the teams supported the idea. Schools supported A NUMBER of schools and groups in the region were supported financially by the Goldfields Casino in Welkom in recent months. The Edmund Rice School received bursaries to the value of approximately R25 000 per month for 20 learners. In addition, the learners were also given uniforms and textbooks. Friends start tutoring business in Welkom TWO young entrepreneurs from Welkom have started a special tutoring business in the city. These lifelong friends, Peace Nthunya and Tshepang Mogorosi, founded the Enim Tutors. Nthunya, a former English teacher, decided to turn to tutoring after reuniting with childhood friend, Mogorosi, in 2013. Mogorosi had recently returned from Pretoria and was privately tutoring gr. 10s to gr. 12s in Mathematics and Accounting.

It wasn’t always an easy ride and the two entrepreneurs struggled to secure funding for their business. In the end, the Goldfields Prayer Network helped the two men with enough capital to start their venture. “We will be forever thankful for their help. I guess in a way God did provide,” Nthunya said. Enim Tutors finally opened its doors on 5 May. It is housed at Star House in Mooi Street, Wel-

kom. According to Nthunya, the business has already created a few employment opportunities for contract tutors. Enim Tutors is a tutoring service that tutors learners from gr. 7 to gr. 12 in English, Mathematics, Accounting and Physical Sciences. MAFANTIRI SOUNDS AND DJs host ed Fantas the DJ’s third annual Birth day Charity Tournament on Tuesday (16/05). The main objective of the event was to issue food hampers (to needy households), blankets (to needy households), school uniforms (to different Allanridge and Nya kallong learners) and school shoes to the needy. “We also raised funds by hosting a car wash. The funds re ceived from the car wash will be do nated to charities. I am the main force behind Guaranna Park, which takes place on 16 and 31 December yearly and also the 057 Home Coming on 26 December every year for giving back to the community of my home town Allanridge,” says Fantas. “I was able to collect food hampers, school uni forms and 100 pairs of school shoes in a week. This is not possible for one man to do, but by the grace of God all things are possible,” says Fantas.

MISS EARTH SOUTH AFRICA regional final ist, Mapitso Thaisi, visited the Welkom SPCA as part of her green journey. This is in line with the projects finalists are re quired to do in the community. Upon her visit, she met Dot McLeod, who supervises at the SPCA, and Catherine Ramaime, who is a qualified animal welfare inspector. It was an educational afternoon, which in cluded learning about the role which the SPCA plays in preserving the lives of aban doned, abused and neglected animals. “In return, the SPCA plays a key role in preserv ing our biodiversity,” says Thaisi. As an NGO, the SPCA is kept very neat by its staff members and primarily relies on donations from the public and private sectors to keep it afloat. They also rely on the services they provide at the centre to generate an income. This includes their boarding centre where owners can board their dogs for a low fee when planning to go on vacation and the adoption of the animals.

Sangers vir oudisies genooi OUDISIES vir die Showcase-konsert vind op 26 Junie by die Goldfields Mall in Welkom plaas (winkel oorkant Eish and Reggies). Dit bied ’n opwindende geleentheid aan plaaslike sangers om hul talent aan die paneel bekend te stel. Hierdie kompetisie vorm deel van die Vrystaat Kunstefees wat van 13 tot 18 Julie in Bloemfontein gehou word. Wonderlike pryse is op die spel. Four acts, one stage THE Goldfields Casino is gearing up for a show to remember, featuring a line-up of South Africa’s hottest acts all on one stage on 4 July. Music lovers in the Welkom area can look forward to seeing Snotkop, Lianie May, Joe Foster and Johnny Apple in concert. Sibongile Tantsi, Goldfields marketing manager, says hosting these four acts on one stage is incredibly exciting and fans cannot afford to miss this live one-night-only show. Francois Henning, better known by his stage name, Snotkop, previously known as Lekgoa, is a well-known Afrikaans and Sotho singer and rapper. He started his music career at age 15 and in the late 1990s adopted the stage name Lekgoa, singing in the South African kwaito genre of music. By 2012, he became one of the top-selling South African artists in Africa in Afrikaans. Snotkop has been nominated for nine MK, Tempo and Vonk Awards, notably for the best Afrikaans pop album. In 2009 he was nominated for the South African Music Awards in the category Best Afrikaans DVD. In 2012 Snotkop won the Best Sokkie Dance Album Award for his album Ek Laaik Van Jol during the 18th South African Music Awards. Rovers in the lead WELKOM’S rugby derby between Rovers and the Welkom Club was comfortably won by Rovers. Rovers’ first team won by 46-0 while their second team won by 13-5. Welkom put up a brave fight, but the team of Rovers First was more composed and overall stronger. Rovers never allowed Welkom to get into the game. Another win for brilliant Luca MOTORSPORT SOUTH AFRICA regional races returned to Phakisa the first weekend of June. Being the winner during the previous round at Phakisa put Welkom’s Luca Coccioni (13) under massive pressure in the super junior GP class. The competitors at the Motorsport SA Regionals knew Luca was the man to beat, and he was hounded by his competitors. Luca’s dad, Robbi, says it became a mind game from the Friday during the practice sessions.

Luca had to pit every now and again, so that whoever was following close behind him, would not be able to work out his gear changes. Having qualified fourth in the first heat he had to work very hard. He then dropped to sixth place and had to fight his way back into the first heat. In the end he finished third. In heat 2, Luca secured the fastest lap time and had to come from seventh place to win the heat. Luca ended up winning the competition for the day, showing he has the guts and skill to beat the best in Gauteng.

Die swemafstand is 28 m en die rivier is in dié stadium 1,2 m op sy diepste. Buiten die groot ysswem, sal die gewone vierwielbedrywighede weer deel van die dag wees.
