Byna drie jaar ná aanval is verkragters tronk toe gestuur “

Die vrou se verkragter, Kenneth Kompi (24), is tot 21 jaar tronkstraf gevonnis. Sy helper, Victor Nono (33), is vir ses jaar tronk toe gestuur. Al twee die mans is van Thabong. Die vrou gaan nou haar voormalige werkgewer, die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD), dagvaar om ook vergoed te word vir die wyse waarop sy ná die verkragting behandel is. Die vrou is op 17 November 2012 in die Welkomse woonbuurt Dagbreek ontvoer, aangerand en na ’n begraafplaas in Thabong gebring. Sy is daar verkrag. Die vrou is nie op die misdaadtoneel deur kollegas bygestaan nie. Selfs ’n kaptein van die Thabong-polisiekantoor wat op die toneel was, het geen hulp aan haar verleen nie. Ook by die Welkom-polisiekantoor is sy nie deur enige van haar kollegas bygestaan nie. In haar getraumatiseerde toestand moes sy, erg beseer en bebloed, ure ná die voorval in geskeurde klere wag om gehelp te word. Geen mediese hulp is aan haar verleen nie. Polisiebeamptes het haar ook tussen die twee polisiekantore rondgestuur om die saak aan te meld. Een polisieman het selfs aan haar gesê sy kan maar die volgende dag eers ’n klag lê, as sy wel ’n saak wil maak. Eers toe die saak deur ao. Juan Jansen van die Welkomse eenheid vir gesinsgeweld, kinderbeskerming en seksuele misdaad oorgeneem is, is geen moeite ontsien om haar aanvallers aan die pen te laat ry nie. Landdros AJ Bosch het in sy uitspraak gesê die slagoffer was emosioneel en ontsteld. Byna drie jaar ná die voorval is sy steeds getraumatiseerd.

DIE Welkomse Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) is in so ’n groot geldelike verknorsing dat die Nasionale Dierebeskermingsvereniging (NDBV) ’n beroep op mense en instansies gedoen het om dringend hulp te verleen. Maria de Wet, wat in Maart vanjaar die leisels hier oorgeneem het, het skuld van meer as R430 000 geërf. Net die agterstallige munisipale rekening is sowat R393 000. Daarby is die agterstallige veeartsrekening sowat R50 000. “Ons het aanmanings van die munisipaliteit gekry. Ek was al by die burgemeester, Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, en wil weer ’n afspraak met hom reël.” Sy sê hulle betaal elke maand ’n bedrag aan die munisipaliteit vir die verskaffing van water, elektrisiteit en ander dienste, maar hoe die agterstallige geld gedelg gaan word, weet nugter. Nog ’n probleem vir die DBV is een van die vereniging se voertuie is in ’n uiters swak toestand. Die enjin moet onder meer vervang word. “Ons bedien nege woongebiede en agt townships. Met een voertuig is dit uiters moeilik om oral uit te kom.” Voorts moet die heining om die perseel herstel word. Dít gaan ook ’n aansienlike bedrag kos. Hoekom kry Bronville nie die volgende soos in ander gemeenskappe in Matjhabeng nie? ) ’n Kuns-en-kultuursentrum; ) Binnenshuise sportsentrum; ) ’n Nuwe biblioteek, die boeke dateer uit die 1980’s, en stel personeel aan van Bronville; ) ’n Ordentlike winkelsentrum. Ons slaggate word elke derde maand heelgemaak. Om die een of ander rede word dit nie 100% reggemaak nie. Ons swembad het 24 uur-sekuriteit. Die persoon sit net daar en kry vir niks-doen ’n salaris. Wat kan daar gesteel word? Daar is net groen water en modder. Omskep eerder daai perseel in iets positief vir die jeug. Behuising kry glad nie voorkeur vir ou Bronvillers nie, mense van Lesotho het al huise gekry. Tenders vir projekte gaan aan kontrakteurs van buite, ons het baie gekwalifiseerde ambagsmanne in Bronville. Die kliniek word elke dag oorval. Ek vra dat alle leiers van Bronville bymekaarkom en die probleem aanpak sodat die mense van Bronville ’n normale lewe kan lei. AANDAG alle jare lange inwoners van Bronville – hiermee vra ek almal se menings en ondersteuning aangaande die probleem rondom Bronville. Ons word almal blootgestel, want die rook hang dag en nag oor Bronville en word deur almal ingeasem. Die kinders en ou mense ly die meeste en dit sal ons op ’n hoër ouderdom affekteer. Hiermee vra ek die inwoners van Bronville wat met my saamstem om op te tree voordat dit te laat is.

Concerning street lights, the ball game stays the same – even if just the bulb has to be replaced. The question now arises: Is our infamous City Engineer’s department in such financial trouble that it cannot even afford a single light bulb on a short-masted streetlight? I reported the light in front of the residence at 20 Dave Fredericks Street almost 18 months ago and nothing has been done. I was requested to respond concerning the defects via the e-mail address supplied by Vista, when these repairs are effected. I do not think there is much chance of that ever happening.

Medicine dumped Alet van der Walt MEDICINE that had not reached its expiration date yet, valued at about R4 000, was found dumped on the outskirts of Thabong at an illegal dumping site. On Monday (17/08), the security services of the Lejweleputswa District Health Services received information from a community member about medication that was found in the vicinity of the Bophelong and Tshepong Clinics. The items were found to be medicine normally supplied by clinics and marked as government medicine.

There were 36 bottles of the anti-retroviral medicine, Atroisa (FDC) which only expires in March 2017. The total value of the medicine is R4 068. This matter was reported to SAPS and a case was opened. Last month Vista reported on an incident where a worker of the Bophelong Clinic, Sonti Elizabeth Monatisa (54), was arrested after medicine to the value of R17 000 had been found at her house in Doorn, Welkom. According to a spokesperson of the Department of Health, Tebogo Oepeng, the department is investigating the possibility that there is a link between the dumped medicine and the case against Monatisa.

THE annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists will be held on 28 and 29 August this year. The recent very successful Mini Expo was held on 11 August at the St Andrew’s School in Welkom. It certainly was a booster injection to the participants, says Anina Nel, chairperson of the expo for the Northern Free State Region. She was full of praise for the Mini Expo. She said that it was an excellent exercise where first-time judges could develop their judging skills. It is at the Mini Expo where the participating chidren also get valuable feedback from the judges. This helps to improve their projects for the regionals, she said. Letitia Reyneke, a committee member for the Northern Free State region, agreed as to the value of this exercise. “The participating children get selfconfidence from this exercise. It helps them to be more assertive, specifically when expressing themselves verbally on their topics to the judges,” said Reyneke. The Mini Expo prepares them excellently for the task ahead at the regionals. There were 48 projects, all from Welkom High, St Dominic’s, Welkom-Gimnasium, Harmony Primary and Lephola Secondary. All indications are that the quality of projects are excellent. The expo runs a special course annually to develop teachers to assist learners in preparing their projects at the participating schools. “This year was as successful as last year and we foresee not only an increase in numbers, but projects of a higher quality. “The input from the region is getting better and more intense each year and shows how seriously we regard this expo,” says Nel. “We thank each teacher, parent and learner for the hard work and preparation so far and we look forward to a bumper expo this year. The competition will be run at the Welkom CUT campus this year.”

Rotary, police bring joy to community Marti Will

AS part of Women’s Day celebrations, the Goldfields Sunset Rotary Club, in partnership with the Thabong

South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), visited informal settlements campaigning against women and child abuse, while identifying homes in desperate need and handing out food parcels. This is the biggest project of its kind in this region and this year was the 12th consecutive year that hundreds of destitute families received assistance. “There is so much poverty in our community, we cannot help or reach all, but we do what we can, and every little bit helps,” says Dulcie Harris, initiator of the project. Four tons of mealie meal plus samp, rice, soya mince, soup, sardines, baked beans, mixed vegetables, tea, bath soap, washing powder, Vaseline, toothpaste and toothbrushes made up the food

parcels that were handed out. Within four policing sectors, specific areas were identified and door-to-door campaigning was done. Before the door-to-door visits, the ensemble of vehicles gathered in an open area, where the sound unit was set up and an SAPS officer first addressed the crowds explaining what was happening, and talking openly about domestic violence. Then all volunteers spread out in three directions doing door-to-door visits, taking note of possible problems and helping the homes in need. “The Sunset Rotary Club and the Thabong SAPS would like to thank Van Jaarsveld Boerdery and Sentrale Rollermeule for their assistance in helping us make this project such a success, helping us help hundreds of families in need by putting food on their tables,” says

NATIONAL COMMON DAY CAMPAIGN FOR UNIVERSITIES SOUTH AFRICA The Central University of Technology, Free State, Welkom Campus held a National Common Day Campaign for Universities South Africa. In his welcome address Dr Maditsane Nkonoane said “The University is hosting this National Common Day Campaign in response to the national call from HESA, now known as Universities South Africa and Ministry of Higher Education for the universities to come up with programmes that are linked to social cohesion and transformational challenges facing higher education and society. The theme for this year: The Constitutional Right to Equality offers interesting focus for universities to respond to issues such as access to higher education, rights to equal participation in education, the scourge of racism in our society, as well as their implications for higher education sector and the country at large. Mrs. Amanda Naidoo an academic, a lawyer, community leader and a human rights activist gave a keynote address on the Theme: The Constitutional Right to Equality. She addressed the audience both students and staff on section 9 of the constitution, the right to equality commonly referred to as the “equality clause”. Section 9 (1) of the Constitution provides that “Everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benet of the law”. She also addressed the question of: How does Section 9 protect affected persons? In answering the above question she said “The Constitution entrenches our rights which were previously nonexistent and there are now mechanisms in place to protect and enforce our rights, such as the new legislation & Equality and Constitutional court” She argued that it is in little things that we can engender the right to equality such as: how we treat each other especially those who are different from us? Respect, kindness, tolerance; what do we say in social groups and on social media that may hurt or offend another? By asking ourselves each time we do or say something to think whether is it true and will it foster unity or will it engender division? In conclusion she emphasized that “our mandate as the CUT FS community is to recognize the right to equality entrenched in our constitution; become visible protectors and upholders of the right; celebrate our diversity at every level; create a zero tolerance culture towards discrimination of any kind”.
