Verongeluk nadat motor se band bars Alet van der Walt

’n BEKENDE en geliefde broer en suster van die Goudveld het die afgelope naweek saam in ’n motorongeluk buite Koffiefontein gesterf. “Francois en Amorè was onafskeidbaar in die lewe en nou het hulle saam gesterf,” het die twee se ma, Lourett Kleynhans, aan Vista gesê. Francois (18) en Amorè het Saterdag, op Amorè se 23ste verjaardag, vir hul pa, Arnold, in Koffiefontein gaan kuier. Arnold het onrustig geword toe hy nie sy kinders op hul selfone in die hande kon kry nie en gery om hulle te gaan soek. Hy het 20:00 ongeveer 40 km buite Koffiefontein op die ongelukstoneel afgekom. Die nooddienste was reeds op die toneel. Die motor waarin die twee jong mense gereis het, se voorwiel het gebars en Francois het beheer oor die voertuig verloor. Hy is op die toneel oorlede en Amorè het op pad hospitaal toe gesterf. Francois het vroeër vanjaar erge nierversaking gehad en dokters het aan sy ouers gesê om hulle op die ergste voor te berei. Hy kon nie eksamen skryf nie en het besluit om nie vanjaar verder skool te gaan nie. Hy was die afgelope paar maande heeldag by die huis. Lourett glo die tyd wat hulle saam kon bestee was baie spesiaal en ’n bonus. Francois was ’n belowende sportman en voor sy siekte ’n matriekleerling aan die Hentie Cilliers-sportakademie. Hy en sy vriend Danny Jonker het ook saam vir die Hennenman-rugbyklub uitgedraf. Amorè het haar matriek by die Hoërskool Hennenman geskryf en

Bejaarde (73) vermoor in huis Alet van der Walt SKAARS 300 m van waar ’n oudskoolhoof, Piet van den Heever (65), in 2011 in Wedepohlstraat, Riebeeckstad, vermoor is, is die lyk van nog ’n bejaarde man verlede week gevind. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng, polisiewoordvoerder, het Vrydagmiddag laat bevestig die lyk van Johan Vos (73) is in sy motorhuis in Alanstraat (wat Wedepohlstraat word), Riebeeckstad, gekry. Volgens Johan se oudste seun, Pierre Vos, is niemand seker presies wanneer sy pa vermoor is nie. ’n Vriend wou Donderdag daar gaan kuier, maar niemand was tuis nie. Die vriend het aangeneem Johan het iewers heen gery. Teen Vrydag het Pierre onrustig gevoel en besluit om

te gaan ondersoek instel en het self op sy pa se liggaam in die motorhuis in Alanstraat afgekom. Johan se hande en voete was vasgebind en daar was ook iets om sy nek gebind. Sy gesig en kop was vol kneusplekke en Pierre glo meer as een mens was betrokke by die aanval. Dit is volgens hom ook duidelik dat sy pa in die motorhuis vermoor is. Johan word deur drie seuns, nege kleinkinders en een agterkleinkind oorleef. Lt. Selborne Menyatso het die publiek versoek om 0830348-661 te skakel indien hulle oor enige inligting beskik wat die polisie in die ondersoek sal help. Die troosdiens is op Donderdag 10 September om 11:00 in die NG Kerk se Erfdeel-gemeente.

Vier van die vyf mans wat onder meer van moord en roof met verswarende omstandighede aangekla is, is gister ook verlof tot appèl geweier. Een man het nie om appèl aansoek gedoen nie. Joseph Motsamai, Richard Matea, Limpho Posholi, Thabo Moiloa en Moeketsi Molelekoa is onder meer van moord, roof met verswarende omstandighede, die onwettige besit van vuurwapens en die onwettige besit van ammunisie aangekla. Die aanklagte spruit uit ’n voorval op 30 Oktober verlede jaar op die plaas Nuwejaarsbosch op die Welkom-Kroonstad-pad. Motsamai is aan moord en roof met

verswarende omstandighede skuldig bevind. Hy is tot 12 jaar vir verkragting en 15 jaar vir roof met verswarende omstandighede en lewenslank vir moord gevonnis. Matea en Molelekoa is skuldig bevind aan roof met verswarende omstandighede, moord, asook die onwettige besit van ’n vuurwapen en ammunisie. Hulle is lewenslank tronk toe gestuur. Posholi is aan roof met verswarende omstandighede en moord skuldig bevind. Thabo Moiloa is net op die aanklag van roof skuldig bevind. Posholi en Moiloa is tot 15 jaar vir roof gevonnis en Posholi het ook lewenslank tronkstraf vir die moord ontvang. Adv. Danie Pretorius het vir die staat opgetree, adv. Vasiliki Patrinos vir Motsamai, Dawie Reyneke vir Matea, Posholi en Molelekoa en Peter van der Merwe vir Moiloa. Regter Albert Kruger was die voorsittende beampte.

No justice after attack Alet van der Walt “THE men at the Thabong Police Station didn’t even have respect for the fact that it is Women’s Month. The way my mother was treated is shocking.” So says Violet Ralethohloane, the daughter of Elizabeth Khomari, who was attacked by a cleaner with a mop at the Thabong Police Station on 19 August. Khomari had just attended a meeting organised by the Thabong police to inform recyclers and scrap metal dealers. Elizabeth is a recycler. Khomari wanted to use the public toilet in the police station, but a cleaner told her the floor was still wet and he was still busy there. He directed her to another toilet further down the passage. Khomari obeyed the man’s request, but found the toilet to be locked. She returned to the first bathroom and told the cleaner that she really needed to use the toilet urgently and would walk on the part of the floor which was dry. The next moment the cleaner started attacking Khomari. He hit her so hard with the mop on her head and body that the mop’s stick broke. When the stick broke the man started to strangle her. The terrified woman managed to escape more abuse when two policemen called her and showed her to use the men’s toilet. She says two young men who were at the station witnessed the whole incident and were very shocked about what they saw.

A WEEK after the attack Elizabeth Khomari was still bruised. Photos: Marti Will Khomari laid a charge and the police officer on duty opened a case of common assault. The officer never sent her to get a medical report and she had to return to the police station on Sunday, 23 August, to get a case number. Khomari only went to get a medical report on the assault on Wednesday, 26 August, six days after the attack. Her body still carried obvious scars and bruises of the attack and she was still traumatised. She told Vista that some of the policemen said she had to accept an apology from the attacker, but she decided to lay a charge. Other people also told her this was not the first time the man had attacked members of

As a member of the public she was attacked in a police station by a public servant, yet it seems as if the police were unwilling to help her. To add insult to injury, shortly after Vista had interviewed Khomari, the police informed her that the case had been thrown out of court. ) Upon further enquiry Vista received the following reply from WO Malebo Khosana, senior communications officer: “The station commander of Thabong has issued an instruction for departmental investigation to be instituted against the member. A section leader who is responsible for investigation of this case, said the J88 form (medical examination report) had been received a day after the docket had been withdrawn. As a result the case will be re-opened and sent back to court for a decision whether it will be placed on the court roll again. “According to our records, the member in question does not have a history of previous violent attack. His misconduct cases were not violent in nature. However, sanctions were imposed on him for those misconduct cases and cannot be disclosed in this instance.”

Goud ná 50 jr. TWEE Goudvelders vier hierdie week ’n groot mylpaal wanneer dit 50 jaar sal wees sedert hulle mekaar in Odendaalsrus ewige trou beloof het. Jan en Kotie de Beer is op 4 September 1965 getroud en ’n halfeeu later het dié egpaar steeds net oë vir mekaar. Hulle het drie seuns, Pieter, Danie en Jannie, en is geseënd met sewe kleinkinders en een agterkleinkind. ’n Vriend van Jan, Basie Fouché, het hom een aand saamgenooi na vriende. Daar gekom, het Jan ingestap by ’n sitkamer vol mooi jong meisies. Hy het vir Kotie Krugel dadelik raakgesien en dit was liefde met die eerste oogopslag. Ongeveer ’n jaar later, op 4 September 1965, is die twee in Odendaalsrus getroud. Jan was sy lewe lank werksaam by die President Steynmyn. Ná sy aftrede het hy ook ’n rukkie vir die Prestige-maatskappy gewerk. Jan de Beer is ’n ou-bekende by Vista se lesers. Hy het ná sy aftrede weekliks die Nostalgie-

DANKBAAR VIR HULP: Elize Viljoen, ’n leser van Virginia, het hierdie foto van haar seun se kruis aan Vista gestuur. Twee weke gelede het ’n vleiland in Merriespruit waar die kruis geplant is, gebrand. Die brandweer in Virginia het op die toneel opgedaag en op Elize se versoek het hulle die veld en die kruis natgespuit om te voorkom dat dit verbrand. Elize sê die menslikheid en behulpsaamheid van die brandweermanne sal haar altyd bybly. Haar seun, Henco Viljoen (19), is ses jaar gelede op die toneel in ’n motorfietsongeluk oorlede.

Help needed Woman missing THE Thabong SAPS have embarked on a recruitment drive for additional volunteers who will serve as counsellors for victim empowerment. Community members who are 21 years and older and who are interested in volunteering at the Victim Empowerment Centre will receive the necessary training to counsel victims of crime and will conduct such duties on a voluntary basis. They will not receive any stipend or remuneration. Volunteers will fall under the Matjhabeng Rape Intervention Care-centre (MRICC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) operating inside the Thabong police station premises. THE Thabong police need assistance in finding a 31-year-old woman, Maria Mathejane from Thabong, who was last seen in February 2007. It is alleged that she went to visit her boyfriend in Rustenburg. She was last seen wearing a green T-shirt and white three-quarter pants. She is tall and slim, brown in complexion with short hair. She was reported missing by her mother, Seromo Elizabeth Mathejane of New Stands in Thabong, Extension 13, in July 2015. The mother only opened a missing personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case recently because she thought her daughter was living with her boyfriend in Rustenburg. When she called the boyfriend he did not know the whereabouts of Maria and claimed that they had separated a long time ago. Dogs rescued from fire ANIMALS suffer X that is what happens when people are negligent with cigarettes or matches, and cause veld fires. In the late evening of 22 August, inspector Ernest Khakhau of the Virginia SPCA received a call from the Virginia Fire Department about a young female dog and her seven puppies that were trapped in a veld fire at the corner of Ossewa and Vally Drive South in Virginia. One of the firefighters was concerned about a fire which had been started by an irresponsible person who did not think about the consequences of his actions. Ernest arrived at the fire at about 21:00, immediately after he had received the call. The fire fighters had by this time managed to extinguish some of the flames near the animals, and Ernest was able to approach the mother and her puppies. There were seven puppies of which two had severe burns on their heads and paws. Five puppies were unharmed and with their mother. The mother of the puppies did not leave the side of her babies once, and if not

rescued would have probably died with her babies. The two severely burnt puppies unfortunately died. According to Thea Smit of the Virginia SPCA, the severity of veld fires cannot be over-emphasized. Many little creatures that live in the veld, underground and in the bushes simply have nowhere to go once the flames start blazing. “They die a cruel death that could have been avoided if people were mindful of their actions,” says Smit. The Virginia SPCA would like to thank the firefighters of Virginia: Jan Lebona, Meshack Gxunyana, Edwin Mulle, and Abia Mooi for assisting them with the rescue. “We are grateful that they had the best interests of the animals at heart and fought vigorously to put out the fire so the mother and babies could be saved. Science made fun in Welkom YOUNG and old in the Free State joined in the fun at the Goldfields Shopping Mall in Welkom on 7 August when fun science activities were displayed. Speed Dating for the Brain was brought to Welkom as part of National Science Week. The idea is to popularise science to the broader South African society and to make Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation subjects more appealing to learners. Erna Taljaard, national project coordinator for the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement, says the aim is to get more South African children to consider careers in these fields. Melktande moet uit Molly Green VIER jaar gelede is klein Danie Fourie sonder ’n slukderm gebore. Hy het ’n groot operasie ondergaan waartydens ’n stukkie slukderm bo in sy keel en ook ’n stukkie onder aan sy maag geheg is. Die operasie het twee uur geduur en hy was drie weke in die hospitaal. Danie se slukderm moet nou elke jaar in die Universitas-hospitaal in Bloemfontein met ballonne gerek word. Dit sal waarskynlik gedoen moet word totdat hy 20 jaar of ouer is. Sy pa, ook Danie, is 44 jaar gelede ook sonder ’n slukderm gebore. Die Fouries weet nie of die gebrek oorerflik is nie. Klein Danie is op 15 April 2011 in die Bongani-hospitaal in Welkom gebore. Sy ouers moes aanvanklik elke dag met ’n aangepaste stofsuier die slym uit sy keel suig. Sy kos is met ’n spuitjie toegedien. Danie sr. was vier dae oud toe sy slukderm destyds in die Rooikruis-kinderhospitaal in Kaapstad herstel is. Hy was sowat agt maande in die hospitaal voordat hy die eerste keer huis toe is. Danie en Frances (39) is sowat vyf jaar gelede getroud en klein Danie is hul enigste kind. Hy is ’n klein woelwater wat van speel hou en is baie opgewek. Klein Danie het ’n gesonde eetlus, maar het soos die meeste kleuters, ’n voorliefde vir soetgoed. Die woord lekkergoed mag nie in sy teenwoordigheid genoem word nie, want dit het sy tande beskadig, sê sy pa. Hy het nog nie sy melktande gewissel nie. Dié tandjies is in ’n swak toestand en sy ouers sê hulle is bekommerd dat die permanente tande dalk skeef kan uitkom. Hulle wil baie graag sy tandjies laat trek, maar so ’n operasie sal bykans R5 000 kos. Hulle het nie ’n siekefonds nie.

LEARNERS of participating schools get ready to test their model wind-driven cars. Learners of the same schools had to show their skills in building old-fashioned kites which were expected to take to the air. The Goudveld-Hoërskool won with its wind-driven vehicle and the Oziel Selele High School won in the kite flying.

Schools shine at expo OF the 131 entries received for the Regional Science Fair that was held at the Welkom Campus of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, this year, 16 were awarded gold. A. Nel, director, and her committee had done it again. It was visible on the faces of all the recipients of awards that their months of hard work and preparation had paid off. The expo committee, under the leadership and guidance of Nel, started to prepare for the 2015 Science Fair last year. The past two months have been extremely busy, with first the workshop for judges and then the mini-expo, before the final Regional Expo for Young Scientists took place this weekend. The gold medal winners were: F. Hajat, (Harmony Primary), T. Kholumo (WelkomGimnasium), D. Welthagen (Sentrale Volkskool), A. Ahmed (St Andrew’s Welkom), B. Nel (Sentrale Volkskool), A. Fourie (St Andrews Welkom), T. Kgotule (Welkom Gimnasium), E. Coetzee (Welkom-Gimnasium), C. Pawson (Goudveld-Hoërskool), Z. Rohrs (St Andrew’s Welkom), H. Coetzee (Welkom-Gimnasium), D. Erasmus, (Goudveld Hoërskool), F. Ferreira (Goudveld-Hoërskool), T.K. Majake (Hoërskool Hentie Cilliers), C. Venter (Goudveld-Hoërskool) and J. Schlebush (Welkom-Gimnasium). Technical High School, St Dominic’s College, St Helena Primary, Taliwe Secondary and the Welkom High School. “The regional expo’s success might grow for it to become an even bigger event than nationals for a lot of the participants,” said Nel. Two international expo participants from the Welkom region, Yolanda Zakaza and Mieke Lagendyk were the guest speakers. The St Andrew’s School was the winner of the Life Science Quiz. In the yearly competition, learners of participating schools had to test their model wind-driven cars after assembling the kit provided to them. Learners then had to show their skills in building old-fashioned kites which were expected to take to the air. This part of the expo is growing in stature, as a record-breaking 20 schools took part. Teamwork and good skills are essential for this competition and right through this exercise, the spirit of all the schools was a testimony to sportsmanship and dedication. The Goudveld-Hoërskool won the winddriven vehicle challenge and the Oziel Selele High School won the kite flying. Nel thanked the various stakeholders for their support. “With people like these, we can look forward to greater achievements, stimulating young scientists towards achieving greater success and excellence, becoming disciplined leaders that our future generations need.”

Cansa joins in Pink Trees THE Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) will collaborate with Pink Trees for Pauline for the 2015 project to make this unique drive an even bigger success this year. The aim of Pink Trees for Pauline is to raise funds and awareness about all kinds of cancer and to improve the lives of people living with cancer and their families. During the 2014 project nearly 65 km of material was sold in 101 towns. While one unit of blood can save up to three lives, only one in a hundred eligible South Africans are regular blood donors. In order to meet the demand for blood the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) must collect an average of 3 000 units of blood a day. DIE eerste rugbyspan van Welkom-Gimnasium het vir die eerste keer sedert die 90’s daarin geslaag om as die wenner van die Kovsiestreek se Shimla-liga vir medium skole gekroon te word. Die Gimmies het Diamantveld in ’n harde en opwindende wedstryd geklop. Volksblad,, moederkoerant van Vista, is ’n medeborg van dié kompetisie. Gimmies is as die nuwe kampioen gekroon nadat hulle Diamantveld met 18-16 in ’n aanskoulike wedstryd op Shimlapark geklop het. Diamantveld het in die eerste helfte van die wedstryd die bo-toon gevoer en in ’n stadium met 10-0 voorgeloop. Die Gimmies het later in die wedstryd ál meer balbesit begin kry en gapings in Diamantveld se verdediging gevind. Veral die vleuel Richman Gora en die heelagter, Ezrick Alexander, het uitgeblink. Gora het vroeg van vleuel na die

middelveld geskuif nadat die binnesenter, Danie Hendricks, weens ’n besering die veld verlaat het. Die plaasvervanger-vleuel, Benji Muller, het die deurslaggewende drie met nog sowat 15 minute se spel gedruk. Hy het ’n steekskoppie van die skrumskakel, Jason Olivier, opgevolg wat reg in Muller se hande beland het. Gimmies se Luan James het hom goed van sy taak gekwyt en die agterlyn seepglad weggestuur. Sy suksesvolle strafdoel het Gimmies se sege verseker. Diamonds het voor die strafdoel met 16-15 voorgeloop Jason Olivier, wat lid was van die Suid-Afrikaanse skole-A-span, is as die speler van die wedstryd aangewys.
