Jenny se ouers, Marie en Ruben, en nog naby-familie, was van Rustenburg op pad na die Wes-Kaap vir ’n vakansie toe hulle Saterdag baie vroeg buite Odendaalsrus in ’n ongeluk was. Nie net het hulle ure langs die pad om hulp gewag nie die erg beseerde Marie het byna drie volle dae sonder enige behandeling met ’n gebreekte femur (bobeen) in die plaaslike Thusanong-hospitaal gelê. Marie se man, Ruben (62), het Maandagoggend met Vista se besoek aan die hospitaal gesê sy vrou ontvang geen behandeling of sorg nie. Sy het soveel pyn dat sy glad nie self met Vista kon praat nie. Geen aarvoeding, pynstillers of roetineondersoeke is ná die ongeluk gedoen nie. Niemand het ooit Marie se bloeddruk gemeet nie en die gesin het self pakkies elektroliete gekoop want Marie was weens die erge hitte so ontwater dat haar lippe begin bars het. Ruben het self ’n handvol glasstukke uit Marie se rug verwyder. Dinsdag het Jenny aan Vista gesê haar ma het Maandagmiddag baie verswak en begin kla dat sy sukkel om asem te haal. Hulle het ingegryp en aangehou baklei en smeek tot hulle ’n ambulans kon kry om haar ma na die Mediclinic Welkom te neem. Hier het x-straalfoto’s bevestig dat Marie vier ribbes gebreek het. Twee ribbes is op meer as een plek gebreek en van die ribbes het in Marie se longe ingesteek. Personeel by die Mediclinic Welkom het ook nog glasstukke uit Marie se sy gehaal. Volgens Jenny het ’n mediese dokter by die Mediclinic aan haar gesê haar ma moes uit die staanspoor in die waakeenheid opgeneem gewees het.

Die dokter by die Mediclinic Welkom het gereël dat Marie in die Bongani-hospitaal opgeneem en gestabiliseer word. Daar is sy onmiddellik aan ’n dreineringspyp gekoppel om die vog uit haar longe te dreineer.

Die gesin wag nou dat Marie per ambulans na Bloemfontein vervoer word. Sy sal na verwagting in die Universitashospitaal opgeneem word waar haar been geopereer moet word. Die provinsiale gesondheidsdepartement het teen druktyd nog nie kommentaar oor die voorval gelewer nie. Ruben het aan Vista gesê die ondersteuning wat hulle van Odendaalsrus se mense gekry het, sal hom altyd bybly.

THE Odendaalsrus police are appealing for the public’s assistance to help solve the murder of two men in Odendaalsrus X Kobus Motsemme and an unidentified man. The two bodies were found in two separate places last Friday (04/12) in the Kutlwanong location and in Odendaalsrus’ central business district (CBD) respectively. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, the Welkom police spokesperson, said members of the public informed the police about the two gruesome incidents. He said the unidentified man’s body, already badly decomposed, was found in a shallow grave in a yard of a resident who resides in Block 4 in Kutlwanong. Thakeng said the shallow grave was behind a toilet outside the house. He said the owner of the house informed the police that he saw a human hand protruding from the ground behind the toilet in his yard. “The police members dug up the shallow grave and found the body of a young man
between the ages of 20 and 30,” said Thakeng. Another horrific incident involves the suspected killing of Motsemme. Thakeng said Motsemme’s body, with severe burns, was found inside an unused building on the corner of Waterkant and President streets in Odendaalsrus’ CBD on 4 December. He said cement bricks, with dried blood stains on them, were found on both legs of the deceased. “The deceased’s body was found facing upwards with burns. Blood was oozing from the back of his head,” said Thakeng. Police found a roll of copper cable lying next to the body at the crime scene. Thakeng said investigations were underway. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects, must contact Investigative Detective Const. Seleke Mahloko of the Welkom Cluster Murder Task Team on 076-759-0534.

Two cousins killed by speeding car Teboho Setena A SPEEDING motorist who tragically killed two young boys and smashed into a pensioner, breaking his leg, has the three victims’ families in despair. The accident that claimed the lives of the two look-alike cousins, Zukisa Ngogelo and Anenjongo Madlolo, and badly injuring pensioner Joseph Pheko, occurred on Monday afternoon (07/12). The accident happened in Joe Slove Street in Orange Grove in Thabong. The two boys’ mothers, who are sisters, are devastated by the tragic death of their sons. The effect of the horrific incident caused Zukisa’s mother to be admitted to the Bongani Regional Hospital for treatment for her shock. The ill-fated incident has the deceased families in despair, not only for their loss, but also for not having money to cover the funeral costs of the two deceased boys, aged 13. Both families are unemployed and make a living by selling items. Grief-stricken mother, Vuyokazi Madlolo, said the two families have decided to bury the deceased boys in Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape, which is about 385 km from Welkom. “Money is our main problem as we are unable to cover the funeral cost. “We are appealing for assistance to give

Happy about correct charges A. HARRISON, Welkom: I LIKE to reconcile my municipal account regularly with the monthly readings to ensure that I am correctly charged. This has recently become difficult for me on a number of levels. Firstly because I do not receive my municipal accounts regularly by post. The last one I received was for June which I got in August and anyway, no rates or readings were recorded on it. Secondly, I do not seem to see the notifications if rates have changed. Thirdly, I do not know when winter tariffs change to summer tariffs (and vice versa) for electricity. Fourthly, because the municipality’s recent on/off relationship with De Jager Technologies means that the meters are not always read monthly. And finally, I used to be able to reconcile my accounts but over the last year, I have battled to do so. Perhaps the calculation system has changed. I have tried to get some clarity on how the water and electricity use is charged to my municipal account. With some intrepidity, I made a visit to the municipal offices. Here is the outcome! Regarding the water, I must have missed the announcement. Water tariffs increased by 4% in the middle of this year and are now R10,014/kilolitre (kl) from 0 to 6 kl, R12,128/kl from 6 to 50 kl and R16,06/kl above 50 kl. However, it is a bit more complicated than that. They calculate what you pay pro rata on the number of days between meter readings. So let us assume a hypothetical 25 days between reading dates and a usage of 80 kl of water over this time period. For your 0 to 6 kl used at the cheapest rate, they will multiply the 6 kl by the number of days between measuring dates (in this case, 25) and divide it by the average days in a month (I make this an average of 30,44 days per month over a four year period). This resulting figure (in this case, 4,93 kl and not 6 kl) is then multiplied by the lowest tariff. The same goes for the 44 kl (6

to 50 kl), which recalculates to 36,14 kl (and not 44 kl) which will apply to the middle rate. The outcome is that instead of paying 80-44-6=30 kl at the highest rate, you will be charged for a usage of 38,93 kl (8036,14-4,93 kl) and not the 30 kl as you might expect (this means an extra R37,37 more to pay that you might have thought). Of course, if the number of days between meter readings is more than the average days per month, you should pay a little less than you expect. The electricity is a similar story. In the same hypothetical case of 25 days between reading dates, the cheapest rate is applied to only 287,45 kWh as opposed to the tariff limit of 350 kWh (again you will benefit with a measuring month longer than the average month). A further complication though, is that there is a winter and summer tariff. As far as I can make out, the winter tariffs run from 1 June to 31 August and the summer tariffs from 1 September to 31 May. The summer tariffs are R1,35/kWh for the first 350 kWh and R1,485 for usage above 350 kWh. The winter tariff is R1,55 for 0 to 350 kWh and R1,65 for kWhs above 350. So for two months of the year, the measuring month straddles the change between winter and summer rate and so these different rates will also have to be applied pro rata for the two months in question. I have reconciled my accounts and am happy that I have been charged correctly. Thanks to Emmah at the municipal offices for her kind help. However, I wish there was more communication from the municipality to the public, so that we can understand the calculation methods, the situation regarding monthly readings and who to send them to. If we were more informed and understood the issues, we would be less critical of the municipality.

I’m raising the alarm because I became a victim of this type of fraud on 21 November. Never think you can’t be a victim. They (the criminals) are very clever and shrewd in defrauding people at ATM’s. They pretend they are talking on their phones or that they standing in a queue to withdraw cash from ATM’s, while in fact they are busy cloning (skimming) your PIN and card, using their phones.

You might think they are just chatting or looking on their phones by the look of things. If successful in cloning your PIN and card, they draw your money using an “SMS send” via their phones. These people are very shrewd; they are clever, so let’s work together and stop the ATM fraud. Together we can all make a difference. The banks are doing their part for our protection, so let us do our part. I tell you, it is a very awful feeling to be a victim of crime committed by the ATM fraudsters. Let us help each other.

Animals in need THE Caring Loving Animal Welfare Society (Claws) in Welkom urgently is appealing for funds and food. “Our cupboards are bare and with the large number of animals we are receiving, Claws is running dangerously low on funds. Course explores solar work Molly Green
THE Goldfields Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College near Welkom is the first TVET college in the country to have entered into a partnership with two colleges in England – the Dudley College and the Bradford College – to offer an internationally recognised qualification in solar photovoltaic systems, accredited by City & Guilds. This course will be implemented in 2016. To be able to present the programme, new equipment had to be purchased. The college approached Ellies, a company that specialises in renewable energy, to assist with the equipment needed for the programme. Ellies donated two 80 W solar panels, a solar charger, a remote meter, a kW bi-directional pure sine wave, a 102 MAH deep cycle battery, two metre cabling, as well as 20 m of solar flex. Four staff members were to have received training from a staff member of the Dudley College from 30 November to 4 December. Among others, qualified electricians will be trained in the installation and maintenance of solar photovoltaic systems. The three-week course, for 12 electricians at a time, will possibly be presented over weekends. “Sunny South Africa is ideally situated and nothing is being done about it. In the Goldfields area 7 000 W per square metre can be generated per solar panel,” says Dr Lynette Fourie, principal of the TVET college. The new programme will be internationally recognised, as the college is also in the process of acquiring accreditation from City & Guilds, a global leader in skills development. A number of programmes, accredited by the Energy Sector Education and Training Authority (Eseta) will follow. Hennie Benade, head of the engineering department, says it is vitally important that the solar systems are correctly installed and maintained. In June this year Fourie, Benade and Lucy Losaba, deputy principal of academic affairs, visited the Dudley College and the Bradford College in England. They shared knowledge and expertise and worked together to develop an innovative international solar photovoltaic programme. This timely international skills partnership project is funded by the British Council. Fourie said governments around the world were investing in renewable energy sources to alleviate energy-supply challenges. With this project, solar energy education and training will be done in Lejweleputswa.

Werksoekers moes elk R2 000 betaal en ná ’n dag of twee is die aansoeker aangesê om nog R2 000 vir sy mediese ondersoek te betaal.
Nadat die eerste slagoffer in November verlede jaar ’n klag by die polisie ingedien het, het dit aan die lig gekom dat minstens nog een werksoeker so bedrieg is. ’n Plaaslike radiostasie het daaroor berig en nog ses mense met soortgelyke klagte het na vore gekom. Die twee mans is in Odendaalsrus in hegtenis geneem en is verlede week op agt aanklagte van bedrog skuldig bevind.
Mans in hegtenis vir roof SES gewapende rowers het Sondagnag op die korrektiewe dienste (DKD) in Virginia se perseel in die dorp toegeslaan. Sers. Mamello Mokhuoane, polisiewoordvoerder, sê die rowers het ’n bewaarder, Johannes Lowe (44), ernstig aangerand. Hulle het geëis dat hy die DKD se voertuigsleutels aan hulle oorhandig. Die mans was swaar gewapen en het klapmusse gedra. Volgens Mokhuane het hulle ’n gat in die heining van die DKD-perseel gesny om toegang tot die goed bewaakte terrein te verkry.
Die mans het in twee van die DKD se Toyota Quantum-minibussies gevlug. Die polisie se taakmag het Maandagmiddag (07/12) twee van die mans in Ficksburg in hegtenis geneem en albei bussies is gevind. Die polisie soek steeds na die ander vier verdagtes. Die vermoede bestaan dat die mans na Lesotho wou vlug. Mokhuane kon nie bevestig of die twee mans wat in hegtenis geneem is, burgers van Lesotho is nie. Die polisie ondersoek ’n saak van roof.

THE Disebo Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organisation, is appealing for the public’s assistance in donating non-perishable food for its Christmas Day charity. The required items include toiletries, toys and clothes. These are being collected in aid of cancer survivors. The items will be donated on Christmas Day (25 December) to chosen beneficiaries in Welkom to enable them to experience a memorable Christmas. The foundation is named after Disebo Mahamane, a nurse who died of breast cancer. This foundation has been involved in charity outreach programmes for over four years. It was founded in 2011 by two daughters of the deceased nurse, Kamohelo and Teboho Mahamane, as well as Mohau Thakeli. The foundation is run by six individuals. The other members serving on the foundation are Mpho Sethojane, Lebohang and Nthabiseng Ramolahloane. The focus is to raise awareness about cancer in the community, to reach out and support people who are less fortunate through initiatives such as the Christmas campaign. Deceased’s family wanted THE Free State Department of Social Development in Welkom is asking for the public’s help in finding the relatives of Nomthandazo Virginia Mengcane (65) who died after a short illness upon admission for treatment to the Bongani Regional Hospital in Welkom. She died on 9 November after being admitted to the hospital on 19 October. The social worker at the department has been unsuccessful in finding the family of the deceased at two residential addresses, 18195 Sunrise Motse-Thabong and 24226 Putswa Stene, which was the latest address she resided at. Join in fun event THE mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, will switch on Christmas lights during a festival at Welkom’s Central Park on Friday (11/12). The event will mark the start of the Christmas celebration. The day’s festivities will start early with live performances by local artists and DJs that will showcase their talent on stage. Activities will continue with live broadcasting on the Lesedi FM afternoon programme from 15:00 until 18:00 with three presenters, DJ Finzo, Twasa and Ba2Cada as the hosts. The highlight of the event will be the switching on of the lights by the mayor at about 18:00. The event is open to all members of the public. Law enforcement officers will be visible to ensure safety and security.

When asking for forgiveness, some threw her faults right in her face, Thoso said. “Despite their negative responses, I felt relieved because I sincerely apologised for doing wrong. I have even asked God to forgive me. Living a life with no purpose happens when we think material things bring you joy and value. This cannot be further from the truth,” Thoso said. “It wasn’t until something stirred in me spiritually that I changed and started to live a life in line with God’s good purpose for me. God doesn’t care about your past, but forgives without reservations.” She said through the power of Christ and prayer she saw herself being freed from every stage of bondage. Now she is happy with the life she’s living. “It has been so fulfilling. I even discovered scriptures to quote to grow spiritually,” said Thoso. She started writing the book in November last year and completed in May this year. She is planning to launch the book in March in 2016.

THE Homeboys sevens rugby team emerged as the winner in this year’s Kasi Sevens Rugby Tournament, after beating W Ballast 24-10 on Saturday (05/12).
LOCAL rugby sevens clubs gave a good display of talent at this year’s edition of the Kasi Sevens Rugby Tournament, staged on Saturday (05/12) at the Kopanong Indoor Sport Centre in Thabong. Seven men’s and two women’s clubs – from selective Free State towns, vied the main trophy in the two categories. This year was the second edition of the tournament that was held over one day. Staged during the off-season, the Kasi Sevens Rugby Tournament is an initiative of local players from different teams, targeting townships to develop and promote the game at grassroots level. The participating players are enlisted with first division and university clubs in the different provinces that
include Gauteng, Free State and North West. The Homeboys, from Thabong, was crowned as the champions for this year. It was a good victory for them as they ended as runners-up last year, taking home silver. This year, the Homeboys took gold as the champions, following a convincing 24-10 win over W Ballast, who took the silver medal for second position. Last year, the Homeboys lost their title to the Chakalaka Rebels who did not show up this year. The final between Homeboys and Ballast was one-way traffic, with the new champions in a dominant position from the start of the match. The team made of legends, Hurricanes, settled for bronze in the third place, after their match against Majita from Kutlwanong.
