RAF helps to bury cousins Teboho Setena THE Road Accident Fund (RAF) has offered to assist the bereaved families of the two boys tragically killed during an alleged drag racing incident in Thabong, Welkom, on Monday, 7 December. The grief-stricken families have been in despair after the tragic death of the two boys, Zukisa Ngogelo and Anenjongo Madlolo, who are cousins. The families also do not have money to cover the funeral costs since both parents are jobless. The RAF’s offering relieves the families’ financial part of the unbearable burden. Suzan Lebona, RAF’s regional consultant in Lejweleputswa, said the assistance will include burial expenses and transporting the deceased, while the family will have to seek additional help elsewhere for expenses relating to tradition or custom. She said as the families had arranged, the two boys will be laid to rest on 26 December in Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape, which is about 385 km from Welkom. Lebona said the RAF will also cover the medical and general costs of the third victim, the pensioner Joseph Pheko, who was severely injured during the fatal alleged drag-racing incident. This incident reminded scores of people of a similar incident in which hip-hop artist, Molemo Jub Jub Maarohanye and a friend, Themba Tshabalala, killed four learners and severely injured two others in Soweto in 2012.

Flippie (7) het Dinsdagmiddag (08/12) in die Bongani-hospitaal se waakeenheid gesterf ná hy byna ’n dag lank in ’n koma was. Hoewel dokters gesê het hy kan breinskade opdoen, het Lucille nooit gedink hy gaan sterf nie. Flippie is in 2011 met tipe 1-diabetes gediagnoseer. Sy bloedsuiker was altyd onder beheer en al het hy soms saam met sy maats verkeerd geëet, het hy by die huis gesond en reg geëet. Hy was eintlik baie gesond en het byna nooit siek geword nie, vertel die Delports. Sondag het Flippie begin naar word en het gebraak. Maandagoggend het die dokter gesê hy het voedselvergiftiging en het medisyne voorgeskryf. Maandagmiddag het Lucille en Flippie gesê hul seun moet ’n bietjie opstaan en sy bene rek. Ná hy ’n entjie gestap het, het Flippie op sy bed gaan sit, sy hande het inmekaargetrek en hy

het agteroor geval en sy bewussyn verloor. Lucille-hulle het besef iets ernstig is fout. Die Delports het met hul seun na die Mediclinic Welkom gejaag waar klein Flippie gestabiliseer is en noodbehandeling op hom toegepas is. Omdat die gesin nie tot ’n siekefonds behoort nie, is Flippie na die Bongani-hospitaal oorgeplaas waar hy in die waakeenheid opgeneem is. Dokters het alles moontlik gedoen. Net soos by die Mediclinic was die dokters en verpleegpersoneel by die Bongani-hospitaal uitstekend, maar hul seun het nie beter geword nie, sê Lucille. Dinsdag om 14:30 is hulle na die waakeenheid ontbied. Flippie se toestand het vinnig versleg en dokters het gespook om sy hart aan die gang te kry. Sy organe het begin ingee. Die woorde “I am sorry” toe een van die dokters by hulle kom, sal Lucille altyd bybly. Pa Flippie sê sy seun was ’n uitstekende sportman. Op vierjarige ouderdom het grootmense hulle aan sy vernuf op

’n muurbalbaan verstom. Hy was hierdie jaar in gr. 1 aan die Laerskool Hennenman en het reeds in al wat sport is, uitgeblink en ’n klomp medaljes huis toe gebring. Sonder die besige mannetjie wat altyd gelag het, graag poetse kon bak en grappies maak, is die huis nou stil. Kleinboet Arlo (2) en ouboet SP (14) is nog daar, maar Flippie se plekkie is leeg. Kersfees sal nooit weer dieselfde kan wees nie, sê Lucille. “Die mense se gebede dra ons deur die moeilike tyd,” sê die Delport-egpaar. “Selfs mense wat ons nie ken nie, maar wat vir Flippie geken het, bel ons,” vertel Lucille. Flippie het baie mense se lewe aangeraak. Hy was baie lief vir maatjies en sou in Februarie agt geword het. Hy het reeds ’n lysie begin maak van wie almal sy verjaardag sou bywoon. DIE polisie het Donderdag 3 Desember op ’n groot hoeveelheid kitskos van ’n hoenderwegneemete-onderneming, wat vir onwettige myners bestem was, beslag gelê. Die polisie het tydens roetine-patrolliewerk in die Reaholanedersetting ’n minibus deursoek. Die bestuurder van die bus kon nie aan die polisie verduidelik waarheen hy met so ’n groot klomp kos op pad is nie. Hy is in hegtenis geneem. Ao. Jerome Classen en sy span het verlede week vyf mans met pakke kitspap, bier, koeldrank, biltong, blikkies vleis en grondboontjiebotter in hegtenis geneem. Dit was ook glo vir die onwettige mynwerkers bestem. Die verdagtes word van sameswering tot misdaad aangekla. Man rapes granny A YOUNG man, who is 19 years old, was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in Welkom, after he was found guilty of raping his 73-year-old grandmother. After the ordeal the rapist asked his victim for money and cigarettes, which she handed over to him. He also instructed the victim not to tell anyone, otherwise he will kill her. The incident happened on 31 May at about 03:45. The elderly woman was asleep in her house in Hoopstad when the man broke into her house and raped her. The victim realised it was her grandson. The suspect was arrested and brought to court in the Welkom Regional Court. He was sentenced for four years for house breaking and ten years for rape. Elma Niekerk prosecuted, while Tiloshni Ramdeyal, magistrate of the dedicated sexual offences court, was the presiding officer.

Man in huis geskiet Aletta van der Walt BEN SCHEEPERS, ’n oudleerling van die Hoër Tegniese Skool (HTS) in Welkom, is op Vrydag 4 Desember in sy huis in Fochville vermoor toe gewapende rowers hom doodgeskiet het. Scheepers (46) was in 1987 in matriek aan die HTS Welkom. Talle Goudvelders het hul skok en medelye met sy dood uitgespreek. Scheepers was onder sy vriende as Skiepa bekend en was ook lid van die valskermbataljon. Gewapende rowers – na bewering drie van hulle – het net voor 08:00 in die Scheeperse se huis in Olienstraat,

Fochville, ingebars. Scheepers het kans gehad om die noodknoppie van sy alarm te druk voor hy noodlottig geskiet is. Sy gestremde seun, Devin, was in die vertrek toe hy vermoor is. Scheepers word deur sy vrou, Corna, sy pa, Ben, broers Martiens en Henk, en twee seuns, Devin en Stefan oorleef. Hy is Donderdag (10/12) in Fochville te ruste gelê.

Thabong-hoof groet ná 41 jaar Alet van der Walt

“DAAR is net een manier om ’n ding te doen, en dit is die regte manier.” Só sê brig. Cois Muller, die man aan die stuur van Suid-Afrika se beste polisiekantoor. Muller sê die Thabong-polisiekantoor se aanwysing as Suid-Afrika se beste polisiekantoor span die kroon op sy loopbaan in die polisiediens. Boonop het die polisiekantoor twee jaar ná mekaar, in 2014 en 2015, dié gesogte titel as beste polisiekantoor in die land verwerf. Dit is ook vyf keer as die beste polisiekantoor in die Vrystaat aangewys. Die eerste nasionale eerbewys was vir hom baie spesiaal en emosioneel, sê Muller wat einde Desember aftree. Hy was nie ’n maklike man om mee saam te werk nie, maar hy en die 316 mense onder hom het oor die jare heen ’n gedugte span geword. “In Thabong kon ek my drome en ideale uitleef om ’n verskil te maak,” sê Muller. Aanvanklik was dit moeilik om aanvaar te word, maar hy is iemand wat daarvan hou om mense te bemagtig en te ontwikkel en eindelik het dit vrugte afgewerp. “Mense moet trots in hul werk hê en in hulself glo,” sê hy. Thabong is een van 14 woonbuurte in die land wat weens erge misdaad, werkloosheid en armoede tot ’n presidensiële gebied verklaar is. Dit is dié township waarheen Muller in 2009 op eie versoek verplaas is. Ná jare se diens in die provinsiale afdeling van die polisiediens wou hy weer op grondvlak werk en ’n verskil maak. Hy het verskeie besonderse benaderings na Thabong gebring om misdaad te bekamp. Die messe- en kruiseprojek is twee

van die veldtogte wat Thabong se gemeenskap in die stryd teen misdaad saamgesnoer het. Mense is aangemoedig om messe en gevaarlike wapens by die polisie in te dien. Die messe is aanmekaargesweis om ’n besonderse beeld te vorm. Die messebeeld is net soveel ’n standbeeld teen misdaad as wat dit Muller se bydrae aan Thabong se mense simboliseer. Letterlik duisende messe is deur mense ingedien en dit word steeds gedoen. Sy kruiseprojek, waarin rooi kruise buite die polisiekantoor opgerig word om elke moord te verteenwoordig en wit kruise om die vorige jaar se moordslagoffers te gedenk, het ook gehelp op die township se inwoners agter hom te verenig. “Om Thabong se kantoor tot ’n suksesvolle polisiekantoor op te bou het harde werk van baie mense geverg. “Thabong se gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (GPF) onder leiding van oudburgemeester Serake Leeu het ook ’n groot bydrae gelewer,” sê Muller. By die polisiekantoor het Muller sy eie eerbewyse ingestel om erkenning vir goeie werk te gee. Uitblinkers ontvang eerbewyse vir hul prestasies. Hy sê hiermee maak hy seker dat samehorigheid en spangees in die kantoor seëvier. Een keer ’n week, op Maandae, hou hy ’n vrywillige kerkparade en op Woensdae is daar ’n verpligte uniformparade. Dan sing almal saam die Volkslied. Oor netheid is hy baie streng. Wanneer die kantoor slordig en vuil lyk, spring almal in en maak dit van hoek tot kant skoon. Hy sê ná 41 jaar diens kan hy met trots sê hy sal weer ’n loopbaan in die polisiediens kies. Dit is al wat hy van kleins af wou doen en hy kan nie glo sy loopbaan is

In 1974 het hy in die Oos-Kaap sy blou polisiedrag aangetrek. Hy was nog nie 18 jaar oud nie toe hy reeds sy sersant-eksamen geslaag het. Ook as sportman het hy sy bydrae in die polisie gelewer. In 1999 het hy sy nasionale kleure as Springbokskut in die afdeling vir

diensgewere verwerf. Hy het verder ’n groot bydrae gelewer om Bobbiespark, die polisie se sportterrein in Bloemfontein, tot ’n volwaardige sportkompleks op te bou. Hy sê sy BMW-motorfiets, ’n woonwa, drie volwasse kinders en ’n laatlam, twee kleinkinders en sy vrou, kapt. Magda Muller, sal seker maak sy lewe ná aftrede bly vol bedrywighede.

Rapists sent to jail JUSTICE has prevailed for two rape victims, a 11-year-old girl from Wesselsbron and a woman from Welkom, following the sentencing of their rapists by the Welkom Court for Sexual Offences. The accused were sentenced recently for the two separate incidents. The court found the trio, Hluphekile “Quinta” Maile, Teboho “Mtshetshe” Pitsi and Lebohang Makhanya, guilty of raping the Welkom woman in July this year. Maile and Pitsi were sentenced to 24 years and 14 years imprisonment respectively, while Makhanya received five years. The court ruled that the sentences would run concurrently. The trio gang raped the woman, from Thabong, this year in July after threatening the victim with a knife. They forcedly took the woman to an open field in Orange

Groove, where they undressed her and then took turns at raping her without protection, the court heard. The rapists confronted the woman in Mangosuthu Buthelezi Street on her way home at about 17:30. Two men demanded a cellphone and money from the victim. Both men verbally abused her after she had replied that she neither had money nor a mobile phone. In a separate case of rape, the court sentenced Tau Abram Moshane (32) to 15 years imprisonment for raping a minor in Wesselsbron in March this year. The accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will also be placed on the national register for sex offenders. Magistrate Thiloshni Ramdeyal handed down the sentencing, while Ramontsheng Lekgetho prosecuted the cases.

Skoolhoof lê tuig neer ’n n BEKENDE onderwyser, Shorty van Rooyen, skoolhoof van die Laerskool Riebeeckstad, het afgetree. Hiermee kom sy loopbaan van 37 jaar tot ’n einde. Hy het in 1978 as onderwyser by die destydse Laerskool Frank van der Merwe in Virginia begin. Daar was hy departementshoof en in 1993 is hy as adjunkhoof van Riebieland aangestel. In 1997 is hy as skoolhoof aangestel en nou ná 18 jaar as skoolhoof lê hy die tuig neer. Van Rooyen is ook ’n ware rugbyman en was eers sekretaris en die afgelope 16 jaar voorsitter van die Griffons-laerskole-rugbyvereniging. Riebieland is baie hartseer om ’n wonderlike skoolhoof in Van Rooyen te verloor. Sy vrou, Annemarie, tree ook ná ’n ongelooflike 41 jaar in die onderwys af.

SHORTY VAN ROOYEN

ONE initiate has died and four others were admitted to the Bongani Regional Hospital for septic infections after the police had rescued them from an illegal circumcision school in Welkom. The incident took place on Tuesday, 8 December. This comes in the wake of government’s strong warning and instruction that initiations be suspended for this season, citing the crippling drought and the health risk arising from the severe drought as reasons for this. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Welkom police spokesperson, said the deceased initiate was a 34-year-old man, whose body was found covered with a blanket under a tree within the vicinity of initiation school, near the suburb of Riebeeckstad in Welkom.

School ends year on a high note THE TLB Singing School raised the bar this year at the traditionally themed Proudly South African show held recently. The group’s performance was impressive in the different categories. The group put on a good display in the opening scene, the singing of the National Anthem and a show of vocal flair, as well as in the personality category. This impressive performance was the perfect end to a highly successful year for the singing school. During this year, the school received major titles,

among them the Best Singing School Award during the Talent Africa’s Regional competition. The TLB Singing School also received the provincial Battle of the Singing Schools Award. In this competition, all the top schools in the Free State took part. The TLB individual singers also took numerous solo first place awards in various competitions. Tyrell Bazley and Arina Bosch, teachers of the TLB Singing School, set goals to develop an elite competition team to compete for more titles in 2016.

THE significance of improving children’s reading ability took centre stage at the Nal’ibali’s network of clubs’ fun-filled programme held at Bronville in Welkom on 5 December. The educational initiative’s slogan was Celebrating 365 days of Sparking Children’s Potential Through Reading and Storytelling. The children from different Nal’ibali reading clubs, were hosted at the Literacy Mentor to celebrate a year of reading and sharing stories together. “When children read for enjoyment, not only is their emotional well-being enhanced, but their chances of success at school are greatly improved, irrespective of their social or economic backgrounds,” explained Marilyn Cupido, the Nal’ibali literacy mentor who oversees Nal’ibali’s network of clubs in the area. “We took a moment to acknowledge the committed team of adults who have made this year of literacy learning possible for our young members, as well as the children themselves who have not only taken their first steps towards becoming lifelong readers, but are now reading role models for others.” The Nal’ibali reading clubs offer children and their caregivers a relaxed and safe environment where they can read, tell stories, talk about what they are reading and get tips on how to read and share stories at home. While an opportunity to meet and bond with others in the area, the clubs also support children on

their journeys of becoming strong and powerful readers by sharing stories and literacy material in both English and their home languages. The educational initiative started in 2014, with just one club with Cupido running it from home. “But as support for the club and the campaign grew, we saw an opportunity to extend the reach of the Nal’ibali campaign further into the community through a partnership with the Bronville Public Library and the support of the Golden Park Primary School,” said Cupido. Now, together with the library which is running the Nal’ibali reading clubs supported by Cupido and the campaign, the partners have grown the Welkom club’s base to 13, reaching as many as 1 015 children each week. Run in schools, Early Childhood Development Centres and the library, the clubs form part of Nal’ibali’s network of over 700 reading clubs across the country. However, Cupido has emphasised the importance of continued support of reading club leaders, volunteers, parents, caregivers and partner organisation staff so that the children in the community are really able to benefit. “The benefit of the clubs is evident not only in their popularity, but in the children’s positive shift towards reading and writing, their behaviour and performance at school, and now insatiable love for stories.”

Tienermeisie tweede maal in roofdrama Aletta van der Walt ’n TIENERMEISIE van Virginia was vir die tweede keer vanjaar die heldin in ’n plaasaanval. Cironka (18), die dogter van Ronnie (66) en Ciska Nel (51), eienaars van die bekende hengeloord, Ron se Gat, het gesê sy moes Donderdagoggend kophou om weer gewapende rowers se planne te fnuik. Twee mans het Donderdagoggend voorgegee dat hulle werk op die Nel-gesin se plaas buite Virginia soek. Haar pa, Ronnie, het hulle weggewys maar die volgende oomblik het hulle hom oorrompel en met ’n pistool gedreig. Hy is die huis in gedwing waar die

gesin se huiswerker met die pistool oor die kop geslaan is. Ronnie is vasgebind en in die sitkamer aangehou terwyl die ander rower vir Ciska na die slaapkamer gedwing het om die kluis oop te sluit. Nog mans het blykbaar die huis ingekom om die gesin te beroof. Cironka was in haar slaapkamer en het gesien hoe die een man met haar ma in die gang af stap. Sy het haar kamerdeur saggies gesluit en onmiddellik haar selfoon gebruik om hulp op ’n WhatsApp-groep te ontbied en ook die polisie te bel. Cironka het gesê sy wou met alle mag uitgaan om haar ouers te gaan help, maar het besef sy moet eers kalm bly en hulp

ontbied. Een van die rowers het intussen aan Ciska gesê sy moet vir hulle koffie maak. Volgens Cironka het boere, die polisie en ander lede van die gemeenskap baie vinnig op haar noodroep gereageer en binne minute was daar tientalle voertuie op die plaaswerf. Cironka sê sy het uit die kamer gegaan en haar susterskind van twee jaar gegryp en weer in die kamer gewag omdat sy nie geweet het of daar ’n skietery gaan plaasvind nie. Die rowers het met R300 en ’n selfoon op die vlug geslaan en een is in sy kuit gewond. Op 25 Februarie vanjaar is die Nel-gesin in die nag deur ’n bende gewapende rowers

oorval. Cironka het gehoor hoe die rowers in haar kamer in en uit beweeg en sy het gemaak of sy slaap. Sy het haar selfoon se battery stilletjies uitgehaal omdat sy bang was hulle hoor as haar wekker lui. Sy sou baie vroeg die oggend opstaan om aan ’n atletiekbyeenkoms deel te neem. Toe sy seker was die rowers het pad gegee, het sy haar foon weer aanmekaar gesit en hulp ontbied. Die Nel-egpaar is met elektriese koorde vasgebind voordat die rowers gevlug het. Vuurwapens, kontant, selfone, ’n Playstation, ’n rekenaartablet en Cironka se energie-aanvullings wat sy vir sport gebruik, is gebuit.

Team assists reintegration THE social reintegration unit of the Odendaalsrus Department of Correctional Services continues to ensure that offenders receive the management and supervision they require. In line with this, a task team made up of representatives from the department and the South African Police Services (SAPS) recently conducted supervision of offenders on parole in Nyakallong, in Allanridge. This was to ensure that offenders on parole changed their lives, become law abiding and are supported by their families. Thapelo Ralile of the Department of Correctional Services, said the supervision and monitoring programme helped to ensure that offenders on parole complied with the terms and conditions prescribed by the courts and the department. Ralile said the involvement of the police as stakeholders in this programme was

critical, as the police assisted to ensure that offenders on parole complied with the conditions. The police also assisted to make sure the offenders followed the reintegration programme.

This was part of a campaign held to mark World Aids Day on 4 December at the Kutlwanong LoveLife Youth Centre. The participants included the Kutlwanong LoveLife Youth Centre, Kutlwanong Women’s Forum, Department of Health and the police as well as church leaders. They all encouraged the public to fight

Sello Mathafeng, programme coordinator of LoveLife Kutlwanong, said the joint initiative was aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle with about 300 people taking part. He said in line with the theme, members of the public had been encouraged to get tested for HIV/Aids, STIs and undergo cancer screenings with men encouraged to undergo medical male circumcision.

“We encouraged people to know their status and start treatment as early as possible should they test positive. “HIV is real. Our society should start to act responsibly and always use protection when engaging into sexual activities. “Life is too short to risk it. “Let us all be responsible citizens and go to local clinics and test centres. “This should be done regularly and not only during Aids Day commemoration events,” Mathafeng said.

Pad met projek gestap ALTESAAM 15 jaar nadat die GoudveldHoërskool by Projek Voetspore betrokke geraak het, skenk leerlinge, veral matrieks, steeds hul ou skoolskoene aan kinders wat dit nodig het. Dié gemeenskapsprojek is deur Betsi Greyvenstein, wat toe voorsitter van die ATKV-Dames in die Goudveld was, begin. Die uiteindelike doelwit van die projek was om skoene in goeie toestand, wat mettertyd te klein geword het, bymekaar te maak en aan minder bevoorregte kinders te skenk. In daardie stadium het net die Laerskool St. Helena en die Goudveld-Hoërskool op die versoek van die ATKV gereageer. Die Goudveld-Hoërskool het voorheen skoene aan die Hou Aan-plaasskool, Bo-Vaal-plaasskool en die Laerskool Hani-Park gegee. Die matrieks van 2015 het aan die einde van dié skooljaar met skoolskoene skool toe gekom en kaalvoet huis toe gegaan. Van die skoene wat by die skool gelos is, sal tussen die skool se klerebank en Hani-Park verdeel word. Van 2014 af het die Gouties ook begin om skooltasse en skoolklere vir die skool se klerebank te bring. “In soverre dit aan ons bekend is, is die Goudveld-Hoërskool die enigste skool wat steeds by Projek Voetspoor betrokke is,” sê Karin Fourie, bemarker van die skool.

THE Concordia High School in the Free State town of Theunissen is not short on talented football players. The proof that there is an abundance of football talent was the inclusion of three players from the school in the 26-member squad of u.19 players that attended an assessment training camp, hosted by premiership giants, Mamelodi Sundowns. The trio are Motite Pule, Thato Lesenyeho and Matsidiso Likebe. They were chosen after impressing at this year’s provincial and national finals of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup u.19 boys tournament. These learners from Concordia were part of the team that surprisingly eliminated the most successful football school in the Free State, Harmony High

School, at the regional finals. This win saw Concordia reach the tournament provincial final, staged in Bloemfontein, where talent scouts saw the trio X Pule, Lesenyeho and Likebe X in action, representing their school. The 26 players scouted during the provincial and national finals this year were selected on their skills and potential. Football talent scouts believe the training camp would benefit the players substantially from the experience of being in a Sundowns camp. The 26 players were monitored by some of the top and most knowledgeable coaches in the country. Following assessment done by the coaches for the duration of the training camp, more work and focus were needed to ensure the

players reached their potential. The challenges identified were that the players were at different levels of development and the coaches guiding the players have different approaches and styles to groom them. “Getting them to adapt to new techniques was a challenge. “It was our mission to train them so they can become better soccer players and to get them to adapt to different environments,” said Mandla Mazibuko, talent scout of Sundowns. Free State had six players in the squad of 26 players. The other FS learners were Keamogetswe Mokalake of Grey College in Bloemfontein, Jerry Motsoneng of Dr Cingo High School from Kroonstad and Tshepo Mokhabi of Thatogauta in Welkom.
