FOUNDATION REPAIRS
Built on foundation of trust They say a person’s home is their castle but what do they do when the integrity of their foundation is compromised? Call the team at Foundation Solutions.
- steel piles are screwed into the ground to a depth that will ensure a solid foundation. The piles are then concreted in place and securely integrated with the existing building.
Servicing Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and all of south-east Queensland, Foundation Solutions offer underpinning expertise and care.
Foundation Solutions exclusively use the Australian-made Katana Screw Pile, which offers several unique advantages – it is stronger, faster, neater and cost-effective.
Owned by Jason Edmonds and Nicole Rosenthal, Foundation Solutions pride themselves on providing no-nonsense, trustworthy underpinning services. Jason has been working in the residential building industry for more than 30 years, with a particular focus on foundations and concreting. He understands the heartache that comes with discovering your house might have foundation problems and will happily take the time to talk through clients’ concerns and answer any questions. Nicole has almost 25 years in the engineering and building industry; she is a champion for her clients, making sure they are always
looked after, which is especially important in an industry that can often leave home owners confused. But what is underpinning? It is the process of restoring the integrity of the foundation of a building. Underpinning is required when the existing foundation has failed and as a result the structure begins subsiding, cracking or is compromised in some related way. Underpinning can be done using a few different methods – Foundation Solutions exclusively use Screw Piles. Screw Pile Underpinning is what it sounds like
“At Foundation Solutions we try to make it as easy as possible for people to develop trust with us,” Nicole said. “We are a proud Master Builder member, but we do a whole lot more throughout your journey with us to ensure we retain your trust and give you peace of mind. “We offer detailed discussions on your underpinning and foundation problems free of charge and with no obligation. Our transparent ‘Wunderpinning’ process ensures fixed price quotations, fixed underpinning schedule, regular phone and email communication from friendly and helpful staff, and most importantly reliable screw pile underpinning for the most solid results.”

ROOFING
High performance gutter system offers style and substance The half round gutter has recently evolved, and its newest profile is emerging as the gutter of choice for builders and homeowners in South East Queensland. Responding to repeated extreme weather events, building code changes and increased demand, the Pantex Roofing Systems’ Grand Half Round 150 Gutter, made from COLORBOND® steel offers a modern aesthetic, unparalleled performance with less long-term maintenance. Designed and manufactured by Pantex, the guttering system draws on years of experience in the industry and offers homeowners and builders absolute value for money. “It has taken some time to change perceptions about the half round gutter and to educate our markets around the benefits for builders, roofers and of course, the homeowner,” says Scott Morcombe, Business Manager at Pantex Roofing. “For the homeowner, the benefits are its increased capacity, in-built overflow and contemporary styling, leading to fewer downpipes. "The external brackets mean reduced blockages and low maintenance. 14 | 2019 Master Builders Build Source
"There are very real long-term benefits for the homeowner and this translates to great value in their new home or re-roofing budget.” For the builder, the benefits are also clear. The Pantex Grand Half Round 150 Gutter includes a system with durable cast metal internal and external corner brackets that allows simpler joining of corners on site. Roofers simply fix external brackets to metal or timber fascia before dropping gutter lengths into place. A key design feature of the system is the ability to prevent ingress of water during extreme weather conditions. Builders can be confident recommending this
gutter to prevent rainwater flowing inside walls and internal structures. A 10mm integrated spacer built into cast brackets assures overflow needs. The Pantex Grand Half Round 150 Gutter has the highest water carrying capacity of any 150mm gutter on the market. An effective capacity of 9400sq mm across gutter cross-sectional areas offering peace of mind that rainwater is going exactly where it needs to. It can accommodate roof sheet lengths up to 24 metres in SE Queensland. The result is a strong and visually superior solution on any new build or renovation.

SHOPFITTING
Shaping the way we shop While predictions of the internet bringing retail shopping to an end, the reality is that it’s changing the experience the customer wants. In this competitive and fluid industry, failure to connect with customers and provide a branded, consistent experience could result in financial loss. Shopfitting can be a gamechanger for many retail outlets with the ability to create a good first impression and create a warm and personal in-store experience to complement online shopping elements. Some of the main shopfitting trends for this year include: Offering the same online design elements in the bricks and mortar store Using the same colours, typography and branding in the shop as in the online presence creates a streamlined experience, where the purchase can be started online but the lasting impression made in-store. Using light to create ambience Using a combination of natural and LED light engages the senses and creates ambience for a relaxed shopping experience. Minimalism Less is always more and the contemporary and simple layout trend lets the brand make the statement and navigation around the store easy.

TURF
Keep your turf looking lush Artificial Turf is more popular than ever before. We see it in schools, parks and public areas, all looking greener than its live counterpart, even in the dry season. There are many reasons for it gaining popularity, the advance in fibre technology and manufacturing process creates a product that replicates natural turf so well, it’s hard to tell the difference. The cost and sustainability of our water resources are also factors. Lush, green lawn can be enjoyed all year round without a significant amount of water, fertiliser, pesticides and a lot of time and effort. Making the move to synthetic turf removes the cost and time burden. Green space on rooftops, shaded areas and where natural grass doesn’t grow is also ideal for artificial turf. It is also perfect for pool surrounds as the products are not affected by salt water or chlorinated pool water. Premium quality fibres and multi-layer backing are UV stable to ensure longevity and durability in our harsh climate. The range of premium quality landscaping turf does not require sand or rubber infill. Due to rigorous testing for health, safety and endurance, Lush Turf Solutions' manufacturing partner is a FIFA preferred supplier to 72 countries from the largest and
most technologically advanced factory. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditation ensures a premium quality product that carries an eight-year warranty, with a life expectancy up to 15 years under normal conditions. A critical factor in the longevity of synthetic lawn is a professional install using premium quality turf, base materials, adhesive and installation techniques. With over a decade of experience in the industry Lush Turf Solutions has commercial and residential projects over
South East Queensland. Their team of professional installers have worked with leading construction companies, landscape architects, government departments and homeowners to exacting standards. Set the scene with landscapes
From simple upgrades to meticulous largescale projects, reflecting your sense of creativity in your garden can work wonders for the overall exterior of your home.
There are a number of key elements that you must take into account to ensure you are maximizing your properties potential from a landscaping perspective and ensuring you don’t sell the outside space of your home short. Firstly, set a realistic budget that will ensure you have the garden of your dreams but one that doesn’t leave you out of pocket. When you have a realistic budget set and are ready to begin the planning stages, take into account your lifestyle. Do you have the time to prune roses or are you more suited to an easy-care garden? Will the kids need room to kick the footy around? Have a clear idea of what you want in your garden and what is feasible for your lifestyle before you consult with your landscaping designer.
The home’s exterior will form the backdrop for your garden so take time to carefully consider the architecture of your home and how your chosen plants, trees and other garden features will complement the design. There is nothing worse than a landscape design that does not harmonise with a home. And finally, employ the services of a qualified and well-regarded landscape designer to take care of the major hassles for you.
While the benefits of hiring a professional are quite obvious, you really cannot underestimate the advantages of having someone complete a site analysis, act as a project manager and best of all, offer their innovative, wow-factor ideas. Take your property to the next level with clever and considered landscape design to ensure a relaxed lifestyle in a striking, yet peaceful setting.

The Future of Building is Here
A new selection of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) products is now available in the Sunshine State, thanks to industry heavyweight, Big River Group. Previously, the MaxiWall and MaxiFloor AAC brands were only available in South Australia. The national launch significantly increases the choice of cost-competitive building products in the local market, with distribution outlets available in Townsville, Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Sunshine Coast. The applications of MaxiWall include lowrise external and party wall applications, as well as high-rise external and internal wall systems. MaxiFloor is the equivalent superior flooring solution. The use of these panels leads to faster construction times and decreased site costs, as their light weight makes them safer to work with and easier to install, including cutting, shaving and shaping. An entire MaxiWall exterior could be completed in a fraction of the time compared to rendered brick or block. MaxiWall and MaxiFloor both provide first-rate fire protection, insulation and soundproofing qualities. With an external render finish, MaxiWall is not affected by the harsh Australian climatic conditions. It is fire resistant up to 1,200°C and classified as a 100 per cent non-combustible building material. MaxiFloor is also non-combustible, and has excellent noise transmission properties. It provides a quiet floor without the squeakiness, bounce and flex that you find with particleboard flooring which meets the National Construction Code inter-tenancy
airborne and impact sound insulation requirements. MaxiFloor is available in 75mm and 50mm panels providing an ideal base for almost any floor covering, and is suitable for both internal and external applications such as decks and balconies. It is installed in a similar way to conventional particleboard by existing installers (carpenters), and is not affected by harsh weather conditions during construction eliminating unwanted delays. For example, the use of 75mm MaxiFloor with 19mm Durafloor in a property in Kilburn allowed a 56mm set-down in the wet and balcony areas (before waterproofing and floor finishes). There was therefore no need to provide modified floor trusses with set downs in these areas, which provided a significant cost saving.
amount of energy required to heat or cool is greatly reduced. MaxiWall and Floor also have excellent acoustic insulation – up to seven decibels greater per surface area than other solid building materials of the same weight. This is particularly important in multiresidential housing as well as semi-detached and terraced houses where soundproofing is critical.
The 75mm panels also provide a solid feel under foot – the closest feel to a concrete slab without the substantial cost of concrete, or the ongoing costs of heating and cooling a property concrete has.
They are also pollutant-free materials, sourced from world-class facilities using German technology. They use reduced raw materials to produce around 30 per cent less environmental waste and 50 per cent greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional concrete.
Instead, these AAC panels also have exceptional thermal insulation properties, which provide ongoing savings to homeowners. With four times greater thermal resistance than standard house bricks, the
Maxiwall and Maxifloor both meet current NCC requirements in Australia. The registered brands are wholly owned and exclusively distributed nationwide by Big River Group. 2019 Master Builders Build Source | 23

Power solution on point A builder-turned-entrepreneur has developed a kitchen product that finally solves the problem of insufficient power outlets with a hidden benchtop pop-up unit.
“Point Pod units give functional space when you need power at the bench, without compromising the aesthetics of your bench top.
Simply press the top of the unit, and power points and USB sockets emerge for use.
“I believe so much in this product, that I’ve decided to give up my building business to fully pursue bringing this to the market."
But unlike other power options, it blends seamlessly into your bench top, so it doesn’t comprise the design of your kitchen. Point Pod was designed and developed by Brisbane builder Cameron Singer, who was frustrated with the limited options on the market. “I developed Point Pod two years ago out of my own frustration of the limited power options available,” says Mr Singer, who has been a Master Builders member for more than 10 years. . “After renovating my own house I was disappointed with what was available to improve access to power for my island bench. There were products online, but they looked so cheap and flimsy in a kitchen we’d spent a lot of money renovating.
ELECTRICAL
Point Pod officially launched its first two products – Point Pod Multi and Point Pod Compact –in late August, and already there’s been quite a buzz in the industry. “I’ve started spreading the word at trade shows, and I’ve been quite overwhelmed by the response," Mr Singer said. "I knew there was a need for a product like Point Pod, but it’s become clear that it’s something people have been looking for.” Point Pods can be purchased directly from the website but they have recently signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Häfele Australia and are looking forward to seeing the new product propelled into the Australian and New Zealand market. The units are designed for any space where
you would use power on a bench top, including the kitchen, bathroom, office and boardroom. “Point Pod is waterproof and robust and meets all Australian Standards as well as stringent in-house testing,” Mr Singer said. “Point Pod is a company dedicated to exceptional design; I started Point Pod to deliver products that are driven by what the market wants for functionality, while addressing the aesthetics of the environment.”

TERMITE & PEST CONTROL
Redefining termite barriers An Australian innovation, Greenzone Termite and Insect Repellent Barrier is a unique preconstruction termite management system which seeks to make pest control simple and efficient, not just for pest controllers, but for builders and other trades too. Greenzone combines a compressible foam substrate with bifenthrin (a commonly used termiticide) resulting in a single product that acts as both a termite barrier and an expansion joint foam. This eliminates the need to install two products to all elements of construction, meaning a typically multi-stage process is reduced to a single step. Not only is it time and cost effective, it also reduces the need for chemical sprays on site, in-line with modifications to the Australia Standards AS3660. Where can Greenzone be installed? Greenzone is suitable for use on all types of construction ‑ be it residential, commercial or industrial - and is applied in three ways: around service penetrations; in expansion
and contraction joints; and in concrete infill slab joints. The most common usage of the product includes the protection of infill garages, basement carparks, external perimeters (where pathways and driveways are present), home extensions, service penetrations and large construction projects where infill slabs and multiple slab pours are required. Benefits of Greenzone Greenzone protects against termite entry for up to 50 years in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. The fact that Greenzone is a self-adhesive product means in most building and construction applications it is a simple, one-step process and does not require any specialist tools. Since this termite barrier doubles as expansion foam, there is no need for the concreter, plumber or any other trade to apply expansion foam to the areas that require termite protection. Building Code of Australia compliance
®
In November 2017, Greenzone Termite and Insect Repellent Barrier achieved CodeMark certification, which means the product is fully compliant with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) as a pre-construction termite management system. Greenzone’s innovative design aligns well with the recent changes to the Australian Standards AS3660, which now enforce restrictions on chemical sprays in concealed areas. Who installs Greenzone? As Greenzone is part of a termite management system, it needs to be installed by an accredited pest manager who holds a valid pest control license in their state. Builders interested in using Greenzone Termite and Insect Barrier are urged to chat to their local pest contractor., contact Greenzone directly at info@ greenzonebarrier.com to be put in contact with an accredited Greenzone installer. For any further information on Greenzone, visit www.greenzonebarrier.com.

SHOWER & BATH
A new era for showers Thermostatic showers have been used in the UK and many European countries for nearly 30 years and are by far the most popular type of shower. Therm-oz Showers Pty Ltd have now made that possible here in Australia, as the Australian standard for this type of shower valve (AS4032.4) is now in the WaterMark scope and the AS/NZS3500.4:2018 Plumbing code. The Therm-Oz thermostatic shower valve is fully WaterMark approved, Licence WMK26224 and can be legally installed, with a five-year guarantee. A thermostatic shower mixes water to a set constant temperature, even if other taps, toilets or washing machines are in use. If the cold-water supply to the shower were to fail, the shower will instantly shut off, preventing any chance of scalding. Turn on with a simple twist of the right handle, using a quarter turn ceramic disc valve. Temperature is controlled by rotating the left handle, limited to 38째C as a safety feature by
an override stop button. Depressing this safety button allows the user to rotate to a higher temperature up to 45째C maximum. Rotate handle in the opposite direction for a cooler shower. Cool-Touch technology ensures a low surface temperature of the valve, safe to touch or hold while showering. Surface temperature will not exceed 20째C when operating at 38째C. Ideal for families with young children, the elderly as well as those who require assistive care and still giving that all desired European styling for family bathrooms and ensuites etc. Not only is this a new and safer choice for your home, it is water saving as you do not need to waste water by manually mixing the water temperature each time. No electrics, simply a far more efficient way of mixing hot and cold water. Therm-Oz showers are a WA based company, supplying nationally to the plumbing merchants of Australia.

Goop makes protection easy They say innovation is the key to success and when it comes to thinking outside the box and applying a creative approach to business, you would struggle to find two people who epitomise this model better than Shane and Kirstee Copley of Goop Guys.
Guys strives tirelessly to ensure customer satisfaction in every element of business. “We are a family owned business with products manufactured in Australia,” Kirstee said. “Our business is built on integrity; integrity in our product and our people.
The idea for Goop Guys came about when Shane and Kirstee owned a builders’ cleaning company and saw firsthand the damage being done to surfaces during the construction phase, and the cost of replacing damaged or scratched surfaces.
We also pride ourselves on a quality product that is safe for the environment as it is totally water based, non- toxic and non- hazardous.
We also pride ourselves on a quality product that is safe for the environment as it is totally water based, nontoxic and non- hazardous.
They also recognised the need for the protective coatings to be easy to apply and remove. The couple began to look for ways to help prevent this and it is through this search that Goop Guys was founded. Beginning operation in 2001, Goop Guys achieved immense success in the early years and as a result, franchising of the company began in 2006. Since its inception, Goop Guys has grown to be Australia’s number one temporary protective coating with 15 franchisees in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, whilst also exporting internationally to nine countries. 36 | 2019 Master Builders Build Source
The Goop Guys started with protective films for external windows and soon expanded the product line to include windows, frames, specialised hard-coated glass, Perspex, UPVC joinery, behctops, cupbouards, bathtubs, stainless steel and floors. “Couple that with not having to worry about the homeowners demanding scratched surfaces be replaced and it is a no-brainer – prevention is far cheaper than cure.” With a five-year plan to continue to expand their business both locally and internationally, Shane and Kirstee look forward to displaying their continued commitment to integrity through exceptional customer service and a first-class quality product for years to come.

Cooltone supports crime prevention with Crime Stoppers Crime Stoppers is a community crime solving and prevention service that involves a partnership between the registered charity Crime Stoppers Queensland Limited (Crime Stoppers), the Queensland Police Service, the media and the public. The Crime Stoppers program provides an avenue for the community as a whole to assist police to solve crimes and ultimately make our State a safer place. Crime Stoppers QLD has had a long-standing partnership with businesses throughout the state with products specifically dedicated to preventing crime. Cooltone's range of safety and security films take on the task of preventing intruders from breaking into a business or home through what is normally perceived as the weakest point, glass window and or doors. A window film does not stop an intruder indefinitely, but makes the effort of breaking the glass significantly harder. On average a
standard glass window can be broken within seconds. A glass window that has safety and security film applied can take two to five minutes to totally break through and require a lot more, noise and effort to the point in most cases the intruder is completely deterred from entering the property. The films also have a second and very useful application, safety. The film can contain broken glass so it is not hazardous. This is very useful in terms of public liability and inhome family safety with young children. Glass balustrading has been a point of issue in many construction projects throughout Australia, specifically spontaneous glass breakage from balustrading due to low quality, toughened glass from overseas manufacturers, Cooltone have provided retrofit solutions to this problem by applying a safety and security film to the balustrade encase any broken glass and stop it showering on to people beneath it.
As a crime prevention supporter, Cooltone helps embody the ideals of Crime Stoppers QLD, helping to provide a safer crime-free community. The range of Safety and Security films offered work as a deterrent and help prevent criminal activity in the local community. Cooltone is also committed to increasing the community awareness of Crime Stoppers QLD and the function and services they provide for the local community which support the QLD Police Service.

Get qualified on the job Apprenticeships and traineeships combine training with working in a real job, with a real boss, for a real wage. Apprentices and trainees work towards the completion of a nationally recognised qualification while learning valuable skills at work and under the guidance of a training organisation. Difference between an apprentice and a trainee Apprentices are trained in a skilled trade (e.g. electrical, plumbing, cabinet-making) and, upon successful completion, become a qualified tradesperson. Apprenticeships generally take up to four years to complete. Trainees are trained in vocational areas (e.g. business administration, information technology) and, upon successful completion, receive a qualification in their chosen vocational area. Traineeships generally take between 12 months and three years to complete. Quick facts about apprenticeships and traineeships
train together for a length of time. Employers work with a training organisation and the apprentice or trainee to negotiate a training plan. Training options must be negotiated and outlined in the training plan. Aspects of training that are open to negotiation (subject to training package requirements) include selection, content and sequencing of competency units; timing, location and mode of delivery; and trainer or facilitator. Types of apprenticeships and traineeships Full-time apprentices and trainees work and train an average of 38 hours per week and have ongoing employment.
Commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship is the same for all, no matter what age.
Part-time apprentices and trainees are rostered to work on a regular basis, working and training no less than 15 hours per week, averaged over a four-week cycle.
Older apprentices and trainees may provide maturity, reliability, life experience and knowledge, not only to an employer but to other staff.
Existing workers may be employed as an apprentice or trainee in a full-time or parttime capacity.
A mature age apprentice or trainee’s existing skills and experience (gained from education, training, work and life experience) may provide them with credit and may reduce their training time.
Apprenticeships and traineeships combine work with structured training.
The nominal term of a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship is generally double that of the full-time apprenticeship or traineeship.
Apprenticeships and traineeships can be fulltime, part-time, or school-based - where some training is undertaken while the apprentice or trainee is in high school.
School-based apprentices and trainees undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship as part of their high school studies (generally in years 10, 11 and 12).
However, apprenticeships and traineeships cannot be completed on a casual basis. Existing employees may undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship.
A school-based apprentice or trainee’s employment and/or training arrangements must impact on their school timetable for the program to be considered school-based.
Apprenticeships and traineeships require employers to enter into a training contract with the apprentice or trainee, which is a legally binding agreement to work and
The nominal term of a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship is generally double that of the full-time apprenticeship or traineeship.

EARTHMOVING
Intelligent machines boost productivity and profit The rise of smart construction combining the grunt of traditional machinery with cutting edge technology is set to make earthmoving significantly safer, increasingly precise and productive. Information Communications Technology (ICT) is harnessing the power of constant remote monitoring systems along with analytic and communication tools, allowing customers to access a wide range of data remotely and in one place. How the machines are being used, the overall machine health and future productive capabilities of an entire fleet can be accessed and assessed from thousands of kilometres away. Intelligent machines, including excavation machinery with automated blade control, increase productivity across all operator skill levels. In turn reducing the cost of each metre of material moved.

HIRE
Get the dirt on hiring the right digger Looking to hire an excavator? Here’s what you need to consider first. Licences or certificates – operators will need a Verification of Competency (VOC), as well as a standard excavator’s licence. Often there are options to hire a licenced operator with the machinery. Choosing the right digger for the job –there are several types of excavators of different sizes and capacities to choose from depending on the job parameters. Factors may include:
• Location • Space for the machine • Access to the site • Depth of the dig required • What needs to be moved • Ground composition
Inspect the machine carefully before you hire it – check the condition of the body, the connections and the hydraulics system to make sure everything is working as it should be.

SOFTWARE
BEAMS makes management easy They say necessity is the mother of invention and when it comes to the success story of the construction software, BEAMS – this saying couldn’t ring more true. Founded in Perth by company director Peter Fonte, the concept for the software came about when, working as a builder himself, Peter realised the need for an integrated building package. BEAMS was five years in the making and although initially developed for Peter’s use only, the ease and functionality of the software prompted him to make it available for commercial use in 1994. Since then, BEAMS has enabled a greater understanding of what is required to manage and maintain a profitable business thanks to its coverage of the entire building process. Unique in its offering, BEAMS covers web leads in CRM, estimating with CADIMage, scheduling and accounts, plus the addition of mobile functionality; a service not available through any other software system currently on the market. In addition to this, BEAMS is back by an experienced and dedicated team who are constantly looking for ways to improve the package which is in perpetual development as the market changes and users’ needs evolve. When it comes to setting itself apart from other similar products on the market, BEAMS offers the unparalleled knowledge and understanding of a builder come company director with years of practical, hands-on experience. “BEAMS software was developed by a builder who understands the wants and needs of users within the construction industry,” Peter Fonte said.
“BEAMS customer support is suited to both the east and west coast, resulting in the longest support hours offered compared to other software providers. “We are currently the only software provider that integrates the functions of at least nine separate applications generally required to manage and operate a successful business, such as word processing, document storage, estimating, scheduling, CAD Image Take-off, email monitoring, sccounting, CRM & Beams Mobile to name a few.” 48 | 2019 Master Builders Build Source
And while having a vast offering is a key point of business for BEAMS Software, simplicity and functionality have always been areas in which they endeavour to deliver, time and time again.
“BEAMS keeps up with legislation changes including GST, TPar, Super Stream and the newest one being Single Touch Payroll and provides full financial reporting, including BAS & PAYG.”
“Users are able to prepare quotes quickly and respond to their clients in a timely fashion,” Peter said.
Backed by over 24 years in business and a relentlessly dedicated team, it is easy to see why BEAMS continues to lead the way in the construction software industry and with international expansion plans in the pipeline, it seems the sky is the limit for this innovative company..
“We offer the ability to maintain accurate cost control which results in better profits, including time-line scheduling.

TRANSPORT
Guidelines keep everyone safe Most building contractors rely on heavy vehicle contractors to transport materials and earthmoving equipment to their sites, but many may not have considered all planning and regulations that go into ensuring the loads get from point A to point B safely. But a lot of planning goes into transporting goods by road to ensure the load arrives in one piece, and all road users are kept safe during the transport process.
2004 in January 2018 to ensure it was clear, user friendly and based on the best available evidence on how to safely restrain and transport the majority of loads carried by heavy vehicles in Australia. The Load Restraint Guide 2018 was formally approved by the Transport and Infrastructure Council on 10 November 2017. For more information see www.ntc.gov.au/ heavy-vehicles/safety/load-restraint-guide/ Changes to regulations
The Load Restraint Guide 2018 provides drivers, owners, operators, freight consigners, vehicle manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and suppliers with the basic safety principles that should be followed when designing a load restraint system to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of loads.
The Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Regulation (MDL regulation) prescribes heavy vehicle dimensions, mass and loading requirements.
The NTC completed a major review of the Load Restraint Guide Second Edition
These standards were previously listed in the Load Restraint Guide Second Edition
The MDL regulation was amended on 1 October 2018 to incorporate, among other things, the load restraint performance standards.
2004. The MDL regulations also provide alternative compliance requirements for vehicles where a mass or dimension exemption applies, for example very large loads. These alternative compliance requirements apply if:
• a mass or dimension exemption is in
force for the vehicle for the journey; and
• the vehicle complies with the mass or dimension exemption; and
• an engineer has given a certificate.
The engineer’s certificate must describe the load restraint system and certify that the load restraint system is suitable to safely restrain the load, taking into consideration the nature of the load and the conditions reasonably expected to be experienced during the journey. The driver of the vehicle must keep a copy of the engineer’s certificate in their possession during the journey.

TIMBER PRODUCTS
NCC changes to create new timber opportunities Changes to the 2019 National Construction Code Volume One (NCC) increase the range of buildings, up to an effective height of 25m, in which fire-protected timber construction systems can be used. The new Classes add schools, retail premises, hospitals and aged care facilities to the previously approved multi-residential, hospitality accommodation and office buildings. In 2016, following extensive work and a successful submission by Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA), the company behind the WoodSolutions Program, a Deemed-to-Satisfy solution was introduced to the NCC permitting, for the first time, construction in fire-protected timber building systems to an effective height of 25 metres (typically 8 storeys) for Class 2, 3 and 5 buildings. In the 2019 edition, these concessions will be extended to include all Classes of buildings, enabling the use of timber building systems in aged accommodation, schools, retail and hospitals. Timber building systems include traditional lightweight timber framing and the 52 | 2019 Master Builders Build Source
newer mass timber options, including cross laminated timber (CLT), laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and glue laminated timber (glulam). FWPA National Codes & Standards Manager, Boris Iskra, who lead the submission process for the 2016 and the current 2019 NCC changes, said that due to the new provisions, builders and developers wanting to use timber will no longer have to undertake time-consuming and expensive ‘performance solutions’ to gain building approval, as long as their designs meet the Deemed-to-Satisfy requirements. In effect, it opens the door to a wide range of options and combinations, for example, designers can now create mixed use mid-rise timber buildings, with residential upper levels and lower levels used for office space or retail. Another change to the Code will require all Class 2 and 3 buildings four stories or above in height, to be sprinkler protected. According to Boris Iskra, sprinkler systems will substantially enhance fire safety and the cost of putting sprinklers in will be significantly offset by greater flexibility provided by new
concessions for sprinkler protected Class 2 and 3 buildings. These new concessions include some reductions in fire resistance levels and extended travel distances which will translate to potentially improving lettable space within buildings. Boris provided the example of a building that will now require one fire stairway, whereas it previously might have required two. He pointed out that there are also modifications to hydrant protection that may also deliver cost savings, further offsetting the additional cost of sprinkler protection. If you have a mid-rise project in the pipeline, there’s never been a better time to consider timber and there’s an expert resource to help you explore the most suitable options and realise the many benefits they can deliver. The WoodSolutions Mid-rise Advisory Team pilot program has representation in Melbourne and Brisbane, providing free consultancy services. More information about the team and on designing and building with timber systems, is available at woodsolutions.com.au.
A Class Act. 2019 NCC changes create more opportunities to gain the benefits of building mid-rise timber projects.
From May 1, 2019 changes to the National Construction Code introduce Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions that allow timber building systems for all Class 2-9 buildings with an effective height of up to 25m - typically 8 storeys.
