CONCRETING
Making some hard decisions IN THE PAST, THE WORDS 'SEXY' AND CONCRETE WOULD RARELY BE USED IN THE SAME SENTENCE WHEN DESCRIBING A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. BUT TODAY, THE EXTRAORDINARY VARIETY OF CONCRETE FINISHES OFFERS HOMEOWNERS A WEALTH OF CREATIVE OPTIONS WHEN DESIGNING THEIR PROPERTIES AND SURROUNDING ENTERTAINMENT AREAS.
Salt Finish Concrete
been levelled, and troweled.
A salt finish is one you’ll most probably see around pool decks.
The process creates microscopic ridges in the surface that offer better traction control (especially when the concrete is wet).
It may seem an oxymoron to think of concrete as a flexible option, but it offers so much strength and durability that you can’t go past it as a ‘go to’ building material.
Broom Finish Concrete
Here are a few suggestions that may elevate your next project to a new level.
The effect is created by sprinkling rock salt on top of wet concrete and then washing it away. This leaves a rough, subtle texture that is both appealing and, most importantly, skid resistance.
Again, this one is a great option if you’re looking for a slip-resistant surface. Quite simply, a broom is lightly dragged across the top of the concrete after it has
Stamped Concrete Stamped concrete is one of the most popular textured options and is created through including inlaid motifs while the concrete is still curing. Designs can include stone, brick or other decorative patterns which are pressed into the newly levelled concrete (and can even be stained to add an extra layer of colour). Stamped concrete is often the cost-effective option to spruce up driveways, patios and walkways. 6 | MASTER BUILDERS BUILDING RESOURCE GUIDE 2022
Polished Concrete Finish Very popular in modern, urban designs, polished concrete is achieved by literally grinding and polishing the surface with the use of specialised tools and creating distinct textures with the use of a penetrant chemical. The results are spectacular. And don’t forget, stains and special pigments can be added to concrete to create a colored finish that perfectly blends with your home's colour palette.
ELECTRICAL
Look up and live: rise in worksite incidents sparks safety warning AFTER AN ALARMING INCREASE IN HEAVY VEHICLES AND MACHINERY CONTACTING POWERLINES, ERGON ENERGY AND ENERGEX ARE APPEALING TO WORKERS IN HIGH-RISK INDUSTRIES TO LOOK UP AND LIVE AND DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG. There were 432 accidental contacts with powerlines in Queensland last year compared to 360 reported in the previous twelve months. “We are especially concerned that incidents in South East Queensland have more than doubled,” Community Safety Manager Aaron Smith said. “In the last week we’ve seen a truck roll into a power pole and bring down overhead powerlines at Darra, excavators damaging overhead and underground cables, and a survey peg hammered into an underground cable at New Farm. “Fortunately, no one was injured in these incidents, but the next person may not be so
lucky. If you are working around powerlines, whether they are overhead or underground, there are tools and information available to help you reduce the risks. “Use our free Look Up and Live mobile app to plan work near the overhead network and contact Dial Before You Dig to check the location of underground cables on your worksite.” Last year there were marked increases in powerline contacts involving road transport, construction and demolition, earthmoving and agriculture. “We understand that truck drivers have a lot of risks to think about on the road, but anyone who is in control of an oversized vehicle or carrying a high or wide load needs to be aware of power poles and powerlines because their life is on the line,” Mr Smith said. “Contacting powerlines could be lethal, cause serious injuries or destroy your plant and equipment, so please Look Up and Live and
Dial Before you Dig. “We are working together with high-risk industries to make worksites safe because we all agree that any incident is one too many.” In the northern region, accidental powerline contacts increased from 130 in 2020 to 143 in 2021, while in the southern region there was a significant drop from 158 to 132. One incident or injury is one too many and we are working with high-risk industries to keep everyone safe around powerlines by careful planning. The Look Up and Live app is a powerful addition to your toolkit.

INNOVATION
Building concepts gaining steam THE BUILDING INDUSTRY IS ON THE CUSP OF IMMENSE CHANGE AND WITH THIS COMES INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS WHICH ARE REDEFINING THE LANDSCAPE AS WE KNOW IT. In today’s fast-past world, innovation has never been more important. This year, you can expect to see an increase in some key building innovations and advancements which are either freshly bursting onto the scene, or enjoying a new level of uptake never seen before.
Environmentally-friendly materials
as we move to a more environmentallyconscious industry as a whole.
Off-site assembly Pre-fabrication is a popular choice for homebuilders in this day and age, with a reported increase in productivity, decrease in waste associated and generally, a more affordable end result. This has been one of the most popular innovations of recent times which looks as though it will only continue to grow in popularity.
Sustainable building materials are nothing new, however recycled steel, bamboo and precast concrete can expect to be key features of buildings this year and moving forward. And the eco-friendly materials don’t just stop there. When it comes to insulation, plant-based alternatives and even sheep’s wool are proving quite the popular eco-friendly option 8 | MASTER BUILDERS BUILDING RESOURCE GUIDE 2022
Dry fixed roofing While popular in Europe, dry fixed roofing is yet to be hugely established in Australia. Dry fixed roofing is the term used to describe the mechanical fixing of the roof perimeter at the ridge, hip and verge without the use of mortar and pointing. With great ventilation benefits and a far more cost-effective long-term outlook, dry fixed roofing is one innovation we can expect to see more of Down Under in 2022 and in the years ahead.
ROOFING
The sky's the limit with roofing
FROM OUR EARLIEST DAYS, THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN DREAM HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO “PUT A ROOF OVER OUR HEADS” - AND ANY HOMEOWNER WILL TELL YOU THERE ISN’T A BETTER FEELING ONCE WE FINALLY SUCCEED. But when you break that simple aspiration down a little further, you soon realise that there’s nothing more important for your client's home than a quality roof to keep them warm, sheltered and protected from the ravages of our harsh Aussie climate. And there’s plenty to choose from:
Gabled Roofs We all know the traditional gabled design by their peaked triangular shape.
They have long been the staple of shopping centre entrances and coastal apartment blocks due to their architectural appeal and ability to allow towering ceiling heights.
Hipped Roofs Eco-friendly and a great barrier against all types of weather, hipped roofs are a very common addition to many Australian homes. Utilising a variety of angles or planes in the roof design, the hipped roof is especially effective in frosty conditions as it helps distribute the weight of fallen snow. They’re also long lasting with great durability.
Skillion Roofs
It’s a style often found on older homes and lends itself to great storage options above the living areas or can even be transformed into an additional attic bedroom where council regulations allow.
A skillion roof is a popular modern roof that is distinctly pitched at a specific angle and often can be utilised as a smaller addition to a roof already in place. Its universal design regularly sees it placed at a lower height than the roof of the main structure to create an aesthetically pleasant multi-level effect.
Curved Roofs
Flat Roofs
Curved roofs, as you might expect, are so named because of their curved appearance.
A favourite of high-rise designers and commercial property developers, the flat
roof will forever be a popular choice due to its ease of fabrication, accessibility advantages and lower construction costs. Even though a homeowner may have settled on a roofing style with their builder or architect, the next question is: what should it be made from? Are they looking for something contemporary or reflecting more of a classical heritage feel? Thankfully, there’s virtually no end to the many materials out there you can call on to perfectly suit the construction vision, but just a small sample includes terracotta roof tiles, corrugated metal and steel, shingles, thatching, copper, slate or even glass. Will you follow convention? Mix and match? Or step out with a bold interpretation that will wow the neighbourhood? The choice is obviously yours and your client's but, with the broad selection of materials on offer, one thing is very certain - the end result is sure to be a masterpiece.

FLOOD RESILIENCE
Flood resilient design in homes THE RECENT DEVASTATION EXPERIENCED ACROSS QUEENSLAND AND NEW SOUTH WALES AS A RESULT OF CATASTROPHIC FLOODING EVENTS HAS BROUGHT INTO START FOCUS THE NEED FOR ADEQUATE MITIGATION STRATEGIES WHEN IT COMES TO PROTECTING BUILDINGS AND HOMES. While such events are impossible to avoid, understanding which upgrades or inclusions to suggest to new homebuilders and those looking to renovate is a good place to start to ensure you are delivering the best service possible. Flood resilient design is one of the many ways homebuilders can build their resilience to floods. This involves adapting the design, construction and materials incorporated into buildings to minimise damage caused by floodwaters. The Flood Resilient Building Guidance for Queensland Homes provides information about improving the flood resilience of new and existing Queensland homes and from this, we have extracted some key, yet practical building upgrades that go a long way in
helping mitigate the impact of floods:
reduce damage.
Wet-proofing the lower level of a home by installing polished concrete or tiled floors can significantly reduce clean up and recovery efforts following floods.
Widening the stairs from the lower level of your home to allow you to easily move furniture upstairs ahead of a flood to protect your possessions.
Installing louvres in the walls of the lower level of your home to enable water to easily flow through the home during a flood and

GLASS
The countless advantages of glass as a building material
SOME ARGUE IT WAS THE ROMAN EMPIRE WHO INITIALLY EMBRACED THE IDEA, OTHERS CLAIM IT WAS THE EARLY EGYPTIANS WHO FIRST SAW THE MERIT IN USING GLASS IN CONSTRUCTION. No matter who uncovered its many properties, architects have been utilising the versatility and visual appeal of glass ever since. Far more multifaceted than ‘just for adding windows’, glass is now used in everything from skylights to walls to grand roofing designs. Here are some advantages of using glass as the hero in your construction project.
It’s incredibly resilient Whether it be rain, wind, sun or sleet - glass can withstand the effects of most weather conditions (including extreme temperatures) without affecting its appearance or integrity.
It saves energy Glass can make a significant difference to your energy consumption as it allows natural light (and warmth) into your home, even with your doors and windows closed - ultimately saving on your energy bills.
reduces heating and cooling costs as well.
It’s incredibly versatile Glass can be transparent, translucent or even coloured - which can give the exact same room a vast variety of different looks and moods. Don’t think so? Then simply change the style of lightbulb in the room and you’ll soon see how quickly a new atmosphere can be created.
It can be crafted into almost any shape or design No matter what you have planned for your next building project, glass offers a creative and cost-effective solution that is sure to deliver an ultra-modern contemporary finish.
Great for the environment Another wonderful hallmark of glass is that it is recyclable. This means that as old glass surfaces are replaced, the material can then be broken down and reformed into new glass products - ultimately helping reduce the massive loads of construction waste that goes into landfill each year.
Not only does it save on lighting, but it also MASTER BUILDERS BUILDING RESOURCE GUIDE 2022 | 13

IPEX protects project payments
WITH INDUSTRY PAYMENT TIMES AT RECORD HIGHS, THE LAUNCH OF THE FIRST INDUSTRY PAYMENT EXCHANGE COULDN'T HAVE COME AT A BETTER TIME. Under a revolutionary concept called IPEX, funds for construction projects in Queensland are now more protected than ever. Established by an expert founding team with 70 years of construction experience, the Industry Payment Exchange, or IPEX, is designed to keep construction project funds safe. Now only registered subcontractors and suppliers can be paid, adding a new layer of trust in builders. IPEX launched in 2021 and already has more than $400 million in committed projects for 2022. IPEX is unique. Its payments platform instantly helps builders meet their obligations for a simplified trust account framework, now part of the Building Industry Fairness legislation changes here in Queensland. In short, this greater range of payment protection keeps more people safe. Integrating IPEX into your projects will help you stay compliant as project trust account regulations are added to more and more projects over the coming months and years.
IPEX works by offering instant payment capabilities across Australia’s new payment platform – this means we can simplify payments virtually in real-time 24/7. The industry’s first payment exchange stores project data securely in transparent and verifiable records. The power of IPEX can be seen when projects don’t go to plan. Only verified subcontractors and suppliers can be paid. IPEX can be onboarded quickly via a selfservice application, making it easy for all parties to use. It’s unlike any other option as its digital framework collaborates with all parties in real-time – streamlining payment compliance automatically. At the end of the day, it can solve the payment challenges facing subcontractors and suppliers by restoring confidence with new digital payments processes. And according to executive director Mathew Carey, the introduction of a payment exchange removes doubt about industry payments and payment times, providing confidence across the whole project supply chain. “IPEX works with builders to onboard subcontractors and suppliers, specifically
linking them to that project," Mr Carey said. "The builder can only pay those subcontractors and suppliers, and there is no way to indiscriminately use funds to pay other third parties who are not part of the verified project team.” Subcontractors and suppliers receive funds into their accounts instantly, with a notification automatically sent to them. IPEX knows it’s working as builders have already trusted more than $400 million to be paid through the payment exchange to subcontractors and suppliers. And while IPEX is a crucial differentiator for savvy builders wanting to stay fully compliant with evolving legislation, it’s also a key building technology solution that doesn’t ask users to change their current business processes. “It’s easy to track payments and the retention balance on a mobile app," Mr Carey said. The deep industry insights and experience from the IPEX team mean the payment exchange remains user-friendly, costeffective, and can be used on any project.

Are your showers ticking time bombs? Despite builders best efforts, leaking showers are consistently listed in the BSA’s top ten defects. Sadly, sometimes this is due to substandard workmanship, but most of the time it is the design of the shower itself which is creating the potential for disaster. Most contractors are at a complete loss as to why, but detailed testing has shown how, by the action of expansion and contraction, water is “pumped” along glue cavities to escape the shower enclosure, no matter how well it is water-proofed. The best way to prevent the problem is to seal the screen directly to the membrane, and NOT to the tiles. Waterstop Streamline provides: •
Positive connection between screen and membrane
•
Maximises floor area

Provides a template for following trades
