to lobby hard for our members and their customers when it comes to easing the pressure around these issues, as well as detangling red tape, and ensuring there’s a visible pipeline of work, with our eyes firmly fixed on the long game for both the residential and commercial sectors.
Ian Langer Regional Manager – Wide Bay Burnett Master Builders QueenslandSince the pandemic first sank its teeth in, our members have excelled in the face of adversity, and are continuing to amaze us with their never-say-die attitude. That spirit of determination and exceptional quality of workmanship they’re renowned for provided the inspiration for our 2021 Housing & Construction Awards program – Built to rise above.
It is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2021 Wide Bay Burnett Awards winners’ magazine.
aspired to by our members across their careers. Whether they build houses or revel in renovations, are a specialised tradie, or work on big commercial projects like highrises, health, retail, industrial or community facilities and beyond, there’s a category for everyone to showcase their work and be celebrated. The efforts of individuals are also an important focus, from apprentices, women doing great things in the industry, and builders showing the promise of a long and exciting future ahead.
No matter whether our entrants take an Award away or not, they’re in esteemed company, and a valued part of why Master Builders are so widely trusted and respected.
2021 was hailed as the year we’d say goodbye to COVID-19, leaving all the stress and drama wrought by the pandemic behind us.
As the year has progressed though, it’s become clear the challenges are far from over. While the demand on our industry is a first-class problem to have, the resulting trade and materials shortages and skyrocketing prices haven’t made things easy on anyone. As always, we’re continuing
Our esteemed judges were thrilled to be able to visit hundreds of amazing projects in person this year. Cementing the sterling reputation of the Awards, this year’s field once again surprised and delighted with the calibre, their superb finishes, and degree of difficulty in construction. As always, the judges were on the lookout for external appeal, siting and aspect, as well as amenities and aesthetics, not the styling or interior design.
The judges’ comments reflect this, with accolades such as “very unique,” “seamless,” “excellent use of materials,” “clean finishes,” “difficult site” and “great level of detail” are consistent.
For more than three decades, our Awards program has been and remains the pinnacle
Every Master Builders member is like family, and we pride ourselves on always having their back, whether that means being there in times of need, or celebrating their achievements. With our membership base surging close to 9,000 and growing daily, our experts are dedicated to helping continue to grow and future-proof businesses big and small, who deliver exceptional craftsmanship and service to their customers. It’s our honour and privilege to be a part of their success.
If you are considering building your dream home or diving in to that long-planned renovation, please consider this a showcase of the incredible work that can be achieved when you choose a Master Builder. Thank you for supporting the 2021 Housing & Construction Awards program.
House of the Year celebrates stunning landscape
The 2021 Wide Bay Burnett House of the Year offers a masterclass in unpretentious elegance and carefully considered building design.
Situated in the award-winning environmental estate, Sunrise at 1770, this stunning home, dubbed ‘Our Place’ was completed by Agnes Waters-based Bright Life Homes.
This home has been architecturally designed to make the most of the stunning views over the undisturbed private beach below and embrace the natural setting surrounding the home.
Making you truly feel one with the environment and part of a living canvas, this home’s design capitalises on the perfect yearround climate that Agnes Water has to offer, in particular thanks to the seamless melding of indoor and outdoor living.
Entering the home past a wall of natural stone from the Mornington Peninsula you are instantly greeted by a spectacular view of the ocean.
The same stone has been cleverly used around an electric fireplace which becomes an eye-catching feature of the open planned
living and dining room and meanders to a wellappointed modern kitchen.
The use of the same natural stone both inside and outdoors creates a unique warmth to the home and blends beautifully with the Spotted Gum hardwood floors.
This stone holds a strong emotional connection with the owners, as they hail from the Mornington Peninsula.
Natural light filters through the heart of the home from the huge entertaining decks on both levels, continuing the impressive articulated indoor /outdoor design theme of the home.
The top deck offers two feature timber roofs where Bright Life Homes' carpenters’ craftsmanship is on full display and has been designed to shade the owner’s outdoor kitchen and barbeque area.
This space is truly spectacular and makes for an entertainer’s paradise.
In total the home features five bedrooms, two bathrooms, one ensuite and three powder rooms.
The downstairs ceiling height sits at 2.7 metres high, while upstairs features raking ceilings adding a sharp edge and displaying the high-quality craftsmanship of Bright Life Homes' carpenters and plasters.
The windows feature aluminium hoods to keep the building safe during bush fire season.
These hoods also work aesthetically, giving the home’s exterior a chic, modern finish.
The use of a natural white semi-gloss Dulux paint inside the home reflects the light perfectly, making the timber hardwood floors come to life.
The exterior of the home consists of five cladding materials which ensure ‘Our Place’ is not only modern but also timeless.
The entry features Mornington Peninsula stone and a Merbau timber gable above the garage door.
The front half of the building is covered with scyon cladding which is painted to enhance the appearance of the stone.
The back half of the home is cladded in
Lysaght Enseam, which adds an incredibly modern feel to the exterior with its sharp long lines and seamless join to the roof.
Render has been used on various parts of the blockwork, once again enhancing the modern look.
The architect’s choice of external materials is impressively displayed and seamlessly flow from a modern beach home to a timeless masterpiece which thrusts this home into a league of its own.
A clear testament to the high-end finish and impeccable attention to detail employed by the Bright Life Homes' team, ‘Our Place’ is a property which greatly enhances the landscape in which it sits.
Revitalising an iconic establishment
Delivering on a vision to breathe new life into a much-loved local establishment, the 2021 Project of the Year, Bargara Beach Hotel sets a new standard for sophisticated, coastal-chic design in the Wide Bay Burnett region.
Proudly constructed by Paynters, this stunning build was completed a mere 18 months after a devastating fire ripped through the historical venue.
Today, the completely revamped hotel is a mix of large, functional spaces, calming pastel tones and timber accent features, all working together to create a truly first-class establishment.
The hotel’s revitalisation included two decks, a café and sports bar, beer garden, cocktail bar, gaming room, bistro deck and a back-ofhouse kitchen.
The family bistro is expansive, with cleverly positioned planter boxes and hanging ferns enticing clients through the light and airy space.
When it comes to standout elements, Annie’s Wine Bar kicks the sophistication stakes up a notch thanks to careful planning, high-end materials and a colour palette which is a feature in itself.
The curved seating available in this space adds immense appeal to the bar’s already unique offering.
Given the coastal location of this iconic hotel, the open decks offer alfresco dining, capitalising on the relaxed feel of the space and those all-immersing ocean views.
For the children, the play area is more of an outdoor adventure park and ensures a safe and well-located space for the kids to enjoy.
Paynters have delivered an iconic build for the Bargara region and elevated a much-loved
establishment to soaring new heights.
The Bargara Beach Hotel displays the company’s unfaltering proficiency and meticulous commitment to detail in the most spectacular of fashions and is a build incredibly deserving of the Project of the Year title.
Coastal lifestyle takes centre stage
In addition to achieving top marks in the standard judging criteria, the construction cost must not exceed $350,000, making it a home every Queenslander can aspire to.
Winning the award this year is JRZ Homes with the stunning Lavella Rise Project.
This Hamptons-inspired residence is proudly located in one of Bargara’s pristine estates.
Upon arrival you are met with a magnificently positioned home, boasting a distinctive style and immaculate features.
Designed to make the most of the beautiful coastal Queensland climate, the home is framed by manicured Tropika Blue Cooch green lawns and garden beds.
The property offers four spacious bedrooms, two bathrooms, a home office space which captures the view, luxury finishes and multiple
entertaining areas both inside and out. When it came to considering the home’s layout, the cool ocean breezes and enviable coastal lifestyle offered by the location took centre stage, however maintaining a functional and practical design which made for easy everyday living also needed to be achieved.
The front façade showcases the contrast between painted face bricks, cladding and includes two statement piers supporting a porch which adds a level of understated elegance and elevates the home’s exterior style.
The timber front door creates a contrasting feature to the soft tones of the front entry, with the use of various Scyon products to capture and emphasise the raised gable end and porch.
The President’s Award is special recognition of a home that combines affordability with quality workmanship and innovation. An abundance of natural light and open spacious living areas with cross airways allow the home to absorb the sea breezes from every angle.
Ensuring there was enough space for outdoor entertainment and activities was of the utmost importance to the clients.
To ensure this was achieved, JRZ Homes created a large outdoor area off the main house providing plenty of space to relax and enjoy, as well as a separate outdoor lounge area to make the most of the cooler nights with an open fire pit perfectly completing the space.
The heart of every home is always the kitchen and in this stunning residence, it once again takes centre stage.
The sleek and stylish appearance of the kitchen is apparent from a distance thanks to striking pendant lights which perfectly set the tone.
Boasting a functional walk-in-pantry, breakfast bar with drop ends and Axon feature cladding, this is a low maintenance kitchen which is high in style.
In the master ensuite statement round frameless mirrors sit above his-andher vanity bowls, with sleek cabinetry
incorporating a soft close laundry basket and drawer units.
The floor-to-ceiling walk-in-shower ensures both the luxury and practicality elements are achieved and the addition of a built-in niche elevates the space to resort standards.
Perfectly encapsulating all elements of the President’s Award, JRZ Homes’ tireless efforts on the Lavella Rise Project are to be commended.
They have created a truly breathtaking home which combines quality workmanship and innovation, all while sticking to a budget.

Murchie embrace innovation
Nominating three projects into this year’s Wide Bay Burnett Housing & Construction Awards Program is Murchie Constructions and Adina Designed Interiors.
All three projects illustrate the company’s incredible versatility and reflect their highly regarded reputation in the industry.
Having constructed a number of educational facilities in the past, the Murchie Constructions' name has become synonymous with innovation and expert execution and their latest educational project once again demonstrates this.
The new Waterford Building at Bundaberg’s Shalom College provides state-of-the-art, flexible learning areas, and is a project the Murchie team are incredibly proud to put their name to.
“Murchie Constructions are excited to have constructed a building in which a new age of pedagogical practice will be delivered,” Julie Murchie of Murchie Constructions said.
“We believe this is the first educational building of its kind in the region and feel so honoured to have been involved in the project.”
There is certainly plenty to love about this building, however it is hard to go past a few key standout features amongst the myriad of learning spaces the Waterford Building now houses.
The impressive, tiered learning area takes your focus instantly as you step inside the building and the architectural ingenuity is instantly obvious.
Classrooms, meeting rooms and break out areas offer versatility of space while some are further enhanced by operable walls which allow for separation when required.
Extensive use of glass assists with filtration of natural light and electrically operated highlevel louvres provide ventilation throughout the building.
As principal contractors on the project, Murchie’s team of skilled tradespeople worked tirelessly to carefully stage, plan and deliver this impressive educational facility and the end result is nothing short of spectacular.
The second nominated project, Central Medical, came about when the partners of the business were looking for a new premises to accommodate their busy medical practice.
Working closely with Tomas O’Malley Architect, Murchie Constructions assisted in the management of the design phase of the project.
Designed specifically for the health industry by health professionals, this practice is one of the finest of its kind in the Bundaberg region.
Careful consideration of the building layout was integral to the overall success of the project and was an area in which the project team excelled.
High ceilings, extensive use of glass, screening and landscaping, as well as ample off-street parking stands this medical practice apart from the rest.
Functionality of the practice took centre stage and industry-compliant finishes and fittings were achieved thanks to cohesive cooperation between all parties involved.
Accessibility for both patrons and emergency services has been well catered for.
Future plans for the practice were taken into consideration at the design stage, providing the possibility for potential growth of the practice when required.
The final entry for Murchie Constructions is the skilfully designed, new Bargara Beach Hotel.
Working in with head contractors, Paynters, Adina Designed Interiors helped to deliver a true standout venue which boasts a stylish blend of soft textures and coastal tones, perfectly complementing the venue’s seaside location.
The venue’s interior styling was an integral element of the project and Adina Designed Interiors played a pivotal role.
All four bars and coffee shop were manufactured and installed by Adina.
Extensive use of Tasmanian Oak timber is used throughout, while various mosaic tiles and unique back-of-bar wall displays differentiate the bars from each other.
LED strip backlighting is used in various areas of the bars.
Caesarstone benchtops are used extensively, and blackened recycled Blackbutt was used on the Sports Bar top.
Numerous weatherboard planter boxes with Tasmanian Oak tops decorate the main bistro area, along with custom made banquette seating and screening, all manufactured by Adina Designed Interiors.
As with any project, there is a hero piece, and in the instance of the Bargara Beach Hotel, it has to be the impressive, curved booth seating of Annie’s Wine Bar.
Curved carcasses clad with timber veneer frame the lush blue velour upholstered seating.
Gold plaited rope is used to cover 25mm aluminium rods screening either end of the cocktail bar and the entrance to the gaming area.
In the amenities, numerous oval-shaped vessel-type basins sit on long Caesarstone concrete-look vanity tops with clear finished Tasmanian Oak below.
Matching Tasmanian Oak framed mirrors sit on a wall of subway tiles, backlit with LED strip lighting.
Vanities and mirrors were also manufactured and installed by Adina Designed Interiors.
Reconstructing an iconic Bargara landmark has been an honour and showcases the incredible versatility and quality workmanship produced by the team at Adina Designed Interiors.
When passion and commitment combine
When it comes to completing a home renovation – we all love to indulge in a little DIY.
However, knowing when to put down the DIY badge and call on the experts is imperative to a wholly successful renovation project.
One such trade in which the use of experts is essential is when it comes to undertaking any electrical works.
Entrusting an electrical company to deliver a high-quality outcome for your construction project is a decision not to be taken lightly.
Thankfully, the team at Powersafe Kingaroy boast years of experience which enable them to deliver honest advice, safe practices, and quick results.

Master your dream project
IF there are any positives to come out of the global pandemic, the focus and value we place on ‘home’ is undoubtedly one of them.
Over the last 12 months, a record number of so-called COVID migrants, largely from New South Wales and Victoria, made the decision to pack up their lives and make Queensland home. (What’s not to love?) Government stimulus such as the HomeBuilder grant helped boost the industry at a critical time, putting the great Australian dream of a new home within reach.
Many in the sunshine state have also opted to give their homes a makeover, with the ABS counting over $255 million worth of renovation work approved in the first quarter
of 2021 alone.
With building or renovating your home one of the biggest, most exciting investments you’ll ever make, choosing a builder you can trust should be top of the list in the decisionmaking process.
