Judges scrutinised the winners for their quality of workmanship, degree of construction difficulty, external appeal, siting and aspect, and amenities and aesthetics. The winners exceeded our expectations in all of these criteria.

It is a promising sign for our industry to have so many quality winners. Each winner has put their business, product and workmanship under the microscope as part of an extremely competitive process. And for their clients, this competitive edge ensures they also build trust and respect.

Set in the stunning surrounds of Port Douglas on a steep slope overlooking Four Mile Beach and surrounded by tropical rainforest, this masterpiece is the epitome of exemplary construction at the forefront of the building industry.

The home is made entirely of concrete and steel, with structural elements inside the home to create focal points of interest as well as maximising ventilation.

Internal walls have been constructed so that they don’t quite reach the ceiling, which allows light and air to flow freely.

Built in legacy of the owner’s husband, La Spina Homes have created a visionary home at the peak of incredible construction in Far North Queensland.

Lend Lease Building have amazed people with their renewal and additions to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, bringing together highly specialised paediatric and children’s health services, comprising of more than 74 specialist clinical departments.

This extensive and innovative architecture, engineering and construction have ensured that the hospital is a welcoming, safe and environmentally sustainable place for patients, families and staff alike.

It was an intricate and lengthy process for Lend Lease and their team of consultants and subcontractors, however the project has given patients the opportunity for the best possible outcomes.

The team were able to establish strong relationships with external stakeholders, all of whom contributed to the massive success of the project.

Lauren Cockburn Hutchinson Builders

With broad experience across a wide range of commercial projects, Lauren is nearing completion of her apprenticeship with flying colours and well ahead of time.

Lauren has demonstrated great commitment, enthusiasm and energy in undertaking her work role. Her current supervisor considers her reliable, conscientious, eager and honest, with leadership potential. Lauren finds all types of construction interesting – however her predominant experience has been in heavy commercial building which she believes to be very complex and unique.

Lauren is looking forward to 2016 as her apprenticeship will be completed and she will work towards a leading role at Hutchinson’s.

The future of the building industry looks very bright with young apprentices like Lauren progressing through the ranks.

Lee-ann Pitcher

RECS Consulting Engineers

Holding a double degree in Built Environment and Architecture, Lee-ann is amassing an impressive resume during her time in the industry. She has experience in interior design, contracts, safety and master planning, and has won numerous accolades within her field. She has a special passion for common title residential developments.

Lee-ann is well regarded for her strong work ethic and for her dedication to the industry as a whole. She is currently project managing 23 proposed modern villas in Niramaya at Port Douglas. With a natural flair for understanding and interpreting clients’ needs into her designs, the new Signature Villas reflect everything that is magical about their unique tropical setting, and still manages to deliver that same luxury and contemporary features owners enjoy at home in Melbourne or Sydney.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact that Lee-ann continues to make on the building industry.

An intricate, floral design of glass mosaic tiles installed with the most careful attention to detail has earned Jack Boyd Pools the Residential Trade Contractor of the Year Award. With attention to the smallest detail, including the painstaking use of grouts that match the colour of each tile, this pool is a standout in a house that is full of memorable features. The artistry of the tiling has created a pool that is truly unique and Jack Boyd Pools is a most deserving winner of this prestigious award.

Committed to delivering client’s needs Jack is extremely versatile completing jobs on both a client consultation basis or in some cases, taking control of the project and design of the pool from start to finish.

Employing six full-time staff and, depending on the job, working alongside various contractors, Jack is an extremely proficient businessman.

Being recognised as the Residential Trade Contractor of the Year is testament to the impeccable attention to detail and first-class workmanship of his team.

Cameron McDouall

Acute Builders Pty Ltd

Within four years of completing his apprenticeship, this young man had obtained his Low Rise Builders Licence. Partnered with his brother they have established their own building company. Concentrating predominantly on the remodelling and restoration of Queenslander style homes, they have expanded the business to five tradesmen and two apprentices.

Cameron’s role is to look after all aspects of the business from client liaison, planning jobs, managing staff and even the occasional stint on the tools. As well as building new homes and undertaking large renovations, their business has also branched to major maintenance. Their client base encompasses large regional centres as well as rural communities.

Cameron takes out the Rising Star Award in recognition of his hard work and commitment to his profession. In an industry where versatility and hard work is imperative to business success, it is no surprise that Cameron McDouall’s career is thriving. This year’s Rising Star recipient is sure to be a leader in the industry for many years to come.

AMAGNETIC new builder has entered the island market by taking out two awards for their troppo-styled homes.

Austart Homes, established in the Townsville market since 2006 by father and daughter team John Matthews and Leah Haar, won two categories in the 2015 Master Builder’s Housing & Construction Awards for a pair of Horseshoe Bay houses on Magnetic Island built across the road from each other.

Mr Matthews’s own property took out the Best Individual Home $451,000-$500,000 category.

Magnetic 296 was the first house ever built on the island by Austart Homes Townsville.

“John wanted to design something so you could sit back and relax in true island style,” Leach Haar said.

“It’s a very open pavilion design centred on the main living area with the master bedroom, ensuite, walk-in robe and private deck all under one roof and the guest wing, with two bedrooms with their own decks and a shared

bathroom, are in their own separate bungalow connected underroof by a walkway.”

It has tropical finishes like high ceilings and featured external cladding, timber Kwila in the custom kitchen cabinetry with stone tops, louvers, decking and feature posts, with a neutral colour palette.

The home obviously made an impression on the island with neighbours across the road asking for Austart Homes Townsville team to build their new house.

Magnetic 188 which won the Best Individual Home $301,000-$350,000 category, is a compact three bedroom, 2 bathroom 188.99m² version of the first, but all in one pavilion for the clients.

“We specialise in custom builds and owner designs in Townsville but it’s been wonderful to branch out into a new market on Magnetic Island,” Ms Haar said.

“Two awards are proof we got it right, they showcase our capabilities with the niche tropical design but also overcoming the logistical difficulties between the island and the mainland – we’ve already started quoting on other jobs over there now.”

The Master Builders Awards ceremony is one of the most prestigious industry events and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the leaders in the construction field for their commitment to impeccable workmanship and first-class quality.

Taking out the winning title at this year’s 2015 State Housing & Construction Awards in the Individual Home up to $250,000 category was LA & MM Hancock Builders for their project ‘Marsden’.

‘Marsden’ has many standout features however, the most notable would have to be the high-set, raked portico, solid kwila posts and

craft-stone exterior and interior.

This award-winning kitchen (top left) was designed to meet the client’s exacting specifications, combining classic joinery in a modern, open-plan setting to complement their modern colonial home. By incorporating the basic principles of the working triangle, function is maximised without creating traffic around the kitchen. Manorgale Builders also offer custom designed plans, such as the winning entry in the Master Builders Queensland Burnett Wide Bay Awards $401,000 - $500,000 category, which overlooks a lovely chain of ponds and natural parkland.

This home boasts large windows and stacker doors to ensure maximum light and air flow.

The designer kitchen is complete with stone bench tops, 9 foot ceilings, a large butler’s pantry which boasts a stainless steel sink and abundant drawer space and so much more.

The butler’s pantry itself is almost as large as the kitchen, providing the perfect space to prepare for large dinner parties and family functions.

Manorgale Builders

Butler’s pantries constructed by Manograle Builders often incorporate a wall oven and microwave for maximum functionality. It is these special inclusions and added attention to detail that has seen Manorgale Builders’ success continually grow.

And whilst many may think being a woman in the building trade would have its obstacles, Trish hasn’t found that to be the case.

“Being a woman in a male dominated industry has been a help, not a hindrance,” she said.

With her clients mainly being mature-aged people who have built homes in the past, the quality of workmanship offered by Manorgale Builders is thoroughly appreciated by Trish’s clientele, as is the trustworthy relationships formed with her tradespeople and suppliers who have worked alongside one another since day one.

Women in particular enjoy working with Trish as they feel comfortable enough to liaise with her throughout the entire process, discussing everything from colour schemes through to their particular choice of kitchen.

Trish’s strong relationships with her clients is testament to her business ethos.

One such relationship is that which she shares with clients Margaret and Bryan Hurley, who took the time to share their elation at Manorgale Builders’ recent awards success.
