Easy ways to reduce risk of cancer
he recent events at the Mulago Cancer Institute yet again thrust cancer and its management into the spotlight and while medical specialists agree that one cannot totally eliminate the risk of catching the disease, there are a few measures a person can take to reduce that:
Do not smoke Tobacco use has been linked to various types of cancer. May be what should be pointed out is that even shisha-smoking which is quite popular is a big risk factor, as well as being around smokers when one is a nonsmoker.
Eat a healthy diet Experts advise that you should seriously limit the amount of proteins you eat, largely gravitating towards vegetables, fruits and other foods from plant sources (such as whole grains and beans). You’re especially advised to eat organic foods that have not been treated with pesticides and other chemicals that can be dangerous to the human body. Experts also say you should drink little or no alcohol, limit processed meats and canned foods, among others.
Maintain a healthy weight Maintaining a healthy weight lowers the risk of various types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney. Physical activity counts, too, as in addition to helping you control your weight it lowers the risk of several types of cancer. Running, walking, playing sports and doing gym are among the activities advised here.
Mind your beauty products Different cosmetics and beauty products used today carry a different risk factor for causing cancer, but the bottom-line is that most of them carry some risk, so you are advised to endeavour to use products that carry the lowest risk, and this you can only do by learning of which chemicals are most dangerous so you shun using cosmetics produced with them. Specialists say it is even better if you use more of natural and organic beauty products.
Avoid risky sexual behavior This is primarily about avoiding behaviours that can lead to
infections which in turn might increase the risk of cancer. It entails watching STDs like HIV/ AIDS by limiting one’s number of sexual partners and practising safe sex. Other STDs that have been associated with cancer include HPV and Hepatitis B and C, all of which have been linked to cancers of the cervix, the anus, the penis, the throat, the vulva and the vagina among others.
Regular medical check-ups Regular self-examination and screenings for various types of cancers — such as cancer of the skin, colon, cervix and breast — can increase your chances of discovering cancer early, when treatment is most likely to be successful. For the breasts, cervix and other parts of the sexual system, regular selfexamination is key. You are also advised to take and recurring body pains seriously and check for their cause.
Go slow on those gadgets The risk posed by most modern gadgets that use electromagnetic radiation (such as mobile phones and TV and radios and computers) is still widely contested in the corridors of science. But some machines have already been proved to increase the risk, such as microwaves and washing machines. Specialists say it is better to avoid them as much as (or use them as little as) possible. Even in the case of things like mobile phones, there’s a school which advises using headsets if you speak on the phone a lot.

Unlocking the matters of the heart
OUTFITS ARE SENDING HIM Your outfits will determine the men who approach you

his is yours if you’re a lady still in the process of getting to know each other with the man in your life; if you’re looking to make the right impression so the relationship can grow to a serious level. Every guy is different and so are his turn-offs. Some turn-offs however cut across, and the fashion inclinations below have been found not to be wellviewed by nearly all guys when rating merits and faults of women.
Constant sky-high heels say “I’m high maintenance.”
Many men appreciate high heels. The heels make legs look longer and bodies more lithe. But if stilettos mean you go balancing on your tippytoes this could lead to the impression you’re high maintenance.
Too many logos say “Let’s go shopping.” Logos can spell class and sophistication. But there are few things that give men go-slow thoughts quicker than a woman with giant designer labels splashed across her chest or back. The message here might be that you only wrap yourself in garments that cost more than a month’s rent in a classy neighbourhood.
Invariable super-skimpy stuff says “I might wear hot pants to your uncle’s funeral.”
While men love to see their women in sexy clothes, dressing up
in extremely-skimpy clothes all the time will only make your man worried about how many men may try to bed you. It will also raise questions about your morality–and whether he might not have to cover you up at an event with his larger family.
Shapeless clothes say ‘I think I’m fat” or “I got no fashion style.”
While men usually don’t like extraskimpy in a woman, they also don’t like shapeless clothes. Men want to always see and show off the fabulous-
ness of their woman’s body, so they’d want to see their lady showing some good and up-to-date style sense.
Overly-traditional clothing says “I’m stuck in time.”
When you are a young woman who sticks to outdated styles, it indicates you are too conservative. It will tell the man that you might turn down a good job offer which uplifts your family status just because you don’t agree with the company director’s religious inclination
... He has a sugar mummy but says it’s for our mutual good I’m a third year university student, years old, who has been with my year old boyfriend since our first year. Together we have made so many plans for the future, from moving into a house together upon graduation, to officially wedding and starting a family. But a few months ago my guy began getting close to a woman in her late thirties who works not so far from our hostel, and soon I discovered they were having something romantic going on. When I tried to confront him about it, he told me to calm down, confessing that indeed he had something with the much older woman but also arguing that he was doing it for our common good because she gave him the money which supported us at hostel. Now I’m confused whether I should begin doubting him, or even walk out on him, or keep him. I love him too much and he loves me too.
Janey, UCU My dear sister, you are dedicating your life and your plans to a male prostitute and you had better walk out
before it’s too late. A man who does what you have described, moreover at his young age, is clearly headed for a lifetime of playing women for financial and material rewards, get out the door like yesterday.
Jamillah, Makerere University You are already making plans for moving in together and starting a family at your ages? It’s just your inexperience with the world disturbing you, but good thing is that incidents like this are beginning to teach you how the real world operates. In a few months’ time, you’ll have known that the phase you are going through with your campus boyfriend was only to school you and make you more mature.
Filly, Ntinda I’m sorry to say, your story is a bit funny because it exposes you as a young girl who is yet to realise that issues of relationships have never been a straight-line.

y Facebook inbox is a mess. You will find all sorts of messages coming in from people from different walks of life. I scroll through sometimes and if there’s a group I pay attention to always, it’s the new mothers. I answer all their queries with the little knowledge and time I have. There’s this disturbing topic that I normally find: inadequate sleep at night. Most parents say they can’t take another sleepless night and are trying to look for a solution. When my children were little, I personally had trouble putting them to sleep. When they were a month old up to when they made three months, I barely slept. My eyes were always heavy; I had a terrible headache every day! I lost my joy and sometimes I found myself crying with them. It’s like colic waited for the most comfortable time of the night to attack. My personal experience has taught a few useful lessons: if your baby is suffering from pain in the stomach try relievers like grip water or a spoon or two of warm
“
“Babies eventually learn to soothe themselves to sleep on their own. As your child grows, encourage them to fall asleep on their own.” water. There’s no specific medicine for colic but there are relievers that a pediatrician can recommend. If your baby is not being sleepless because of colic then look for possible causes of sleep trouble. When your baby wakes up crying, try feeding them. Bottle feed or breastfeed them. If it’s not as a result of hunger that their sleep is get-
ting disturbed, try changing the diapers. This, in my experience, always gives them some comfort. Also, check for ill-fitting sleepwear or a stuffy nose. A bedroom that’s too hot or too cold or dusty will cause trouble in breathing and your baby may find it hard to sleep in this condition. If eliminating these doesn’t help, discuss possible medical causes, such as reflux, food or milk allergies, or ear infections, with the doctor. Babies eventually learn to soothe themselves to sleep. As your child grows, encourage them to fall asleep on their own by putting them in their crib while they are still awake and staying until they nod off. Once your baby sleeps through the night, try increasing the distance between you and her crib, or put her to sleep in her own room. Put your baby to sleep on her stomach. Even when there are sounds like a banging door, your baby will not jump out of sleep.

The benefit your lazy co-workers bring
ďż˝
ating back to school, there were always those classmates or coursemates who were clearly not great at working in groups. Perhaps you were/are that kind of person—the kind that appreciates the concept of hearing others’ ideas, brainstorming, and collaborating with team members, yet the fact that a few unproductive team members get credit for your hard work just doesn’t sit well at all with you. If you consider yourself an efĂ€FLHQW KDUG ZRUNLQJ LQGLYLGXDO you may know exactly what this is about and relate perfectly. In DQ RIĂ€FH Ă€OOHG ZLWK VPDUW DQG ambitious people, there will always be, inevitably, a couple of lazy people, who, presumably, are more than happy to take a backseat while you bust your butt to get the job done. If you were historically not great with working in groups, then combined that with a tendency to view idle co-workers with a VNHSWLFDO H\H WKH Ă€QGLQJV RI D study by one Japanese professor are potentially life-changing for you. Eisuke Hasegawa, a professor in Japan, studied ant colonies to see how the lazy ants impacted the overall dynamic of their colony. What she found is something that’s both surprising and encouraging: “Hasegawa revealed that when a colony had lazy ants, it actually helped contrib-
ute to the colony’s long-term sustainability because they have a ‘reserve workforce’ to replace the tired, actually hardworking ants when necessary.â€? Since no one is 100% motivated all the time, wouldn’t it be highly EHQHĂ€FLDO WR KDYH WKH RIĂ€FH¡V RIten sluggish guys step up to the plate when the typically driven crew needs a break? If you believe that the Japanese professor is onto something— that the work-averse people in WKH RIĂ€FH ZKHUH \RX ZRUN ZLOO get things done when absolutely necessary—then you might be able to start rethinking how you operate, leading to a more satisfying workday. Maybe next time, instead of pulling an all-nighter—or pulling your hair out in deep frustration over your Whatsapp-obsessed co-worker’s abysmal work habits—you let go a little. See what happens when you turn it down a few notches. If the ants’ behavior is any indication, your lazy colleagues may be compelled to carry the suddenly heavy workload. Obviously if you are used to counting on yourself to tackle tasks and meet deadlines, it won’t be an easy transition to trust that your colleagues will do their part, but it’s worth a shot if there’s a chance it will lead to a more balanced work distribution on your team. So embrace the lazy ones, they are excellent to have on the team.
Joseph Mutyaba, ďœłďœ´, is a dental doctor and the CEO of Dental Smiles Clinic
ďż˝
hen did you join the employed ranks? I joined the employed ranks in 2006.
What are your future career plans? I plan to open up dental clinics in different places where patients can get relatively cheap services. I’m also working on a state of the art dental lab where artiďŹ cial teeth and cosmetics dentistry is done.
What was your position, how much were you earning? My position at that time was a junior dentist and it was hard to know how much I was earning since I was being paid a percentage per patient I worked on. When did you start rising through the ranks? In 2008, my boss put the business (dental clinic) up for sale because he wanted to venture into something totally different and I was the ďŹ rst person he contacted about it. I saw this as a massive opportunity for me to rise up so I had to look for the money and buy it which by the way I didn’t have at that time and it was huge sums of money but somehow I hustled. I knew the business had potential of rising to the ranks among the top dental clinics around town. Being young and hardworking with good management skills, here it is attending to a huge number of clients including high proďŹ le people. When exactly did you come to your current rank? I came to my rank after buying the business from my boss in 2008. Here I am as the CEO of Smiles Dental

Who do you look up to? Locally I look up to Dr Mutyabule of Pan-Dental.
Company located in Bugolobi. What have been the greatest challenges you’ve encountered in your career? Firstly, people think dentistry is luxury! They only visit dentists when in pain and that’s totally wrong; people should start taking dentistry seriously and go for checkups more regularly for preventive measures. People are also still green about dentistry; they believe dentistry is all about removing teeth yet in actual sense, we are promoting conservative dentistry. The other challenge is that dental treatments are usually expensive procedures, therefore very many people cannot afford them, so they end up having their teeth removed. Junk foods, to speak a bit for my clients, are the other problem; that explains the increase in dental decay lately. Lastly, taxes on dental consumables are way too expensive.
What motivates you in your work? Career-wise, I’m motivated when my patients or clients get to appreciate my services I render to them and because of that overwhelming support there is a period in the year where I offer dental services at half price as a way of giving back to my ardent clients. What books do you read? I am not so good at reading books other than the Bible. I am more into the internet as I google a lot looking for information. Tell us about yourself. I’m aged 34. I’m married with two children. I am a graduate of the Dental School-Mulago. I grew up in many places including Nyamitanga Mbarara, Ssaza Masaka, Kyebando; but I spent most of my time in Kinoni, Lwengo district. I am the third in a family of eight children born of Joseph Kizza Mutyaba and Mrs Elizabeth Nangendo/ they relocated to Boston, USA with my family.

he last time Aston Villa were any good is more than half a decade back. Then, the Villans even threatened to snatch Arsenal’s fourth place trophy—twice— before settling for sixth place in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 campaigns. Things have gone downhill since, and they hit rock bottom last weekend when Aston Villa were confirmed relegated. With just 16 points after 34 games, Villa were truly bad this season. Going by the numbers, Derby were the worst team to ever play in the Premiership. By the end of March, they had already been relegated—the earliest ever in Premiership history. Their 11 points remains the lowest ever in Premiership history. They only won one match all season, and to cap a truly forgettable season, a sex tape emerged showing manager Paul
Jewell spanking a woman. Sadly, it was the only time anyone from Derby was recorded delivering a spanking of any kind.
Lecce (/, points)
Serie A fans fearing the worst for Lecce didn’t have to wait too long to be vindicated. The newly promoted outfit arrived as favourites to go straight back where they came from, and it was soon obvious that getting relegated is what was going to happen. After 26 defeats in 34 games, it was unsurprising when Lecce scored only 11 points in total, thanks to three wins and five draws.
Catania (/, points)
One win. In 34 games. Catania is a club boasting titles in every division in Italian football except for the Serie A. One of their excursions in Italy’s top division stands out, and that is the 198384 season. Catania might have had Claudio Ranieri as one of their stars, but that did nothing to stop them doing a Derby after they finished the season with just one league win, earning 12

Heracles Almelo (/, points)
SC Heracles Almelo hold an unwanted record in Dutch league football: their -73 goal difference in the Ere Divisie is the worst to date. How they got to that place was by conceding 99 goals in a single season, the same season in which they won just three games, lost 25 and managed a paltry dozen points.
Sporting Gijon (/, points)
Sporting Gijon had been flirting with relegation for seasons prior to the 1997/98 one when they opted to do away with the pretence as to where they felt they belonged. How memorably they did that: just two wins and seven draws explains their 13 points haul. Not surprisingly, they made unwanted history on their way down: 34 consecutive weeks as the bottom-placed team on the table, only managing 19th out of 20 as their highest ranking, and shipping all of 80 goals.

tella Nyanzi is a woman with courage. But that’s all the recognition she will get in my column since she can’t keep her own integrity intact. However, I would like to tap into the same energy she used to strip when it comes to demanding what is ours—those of us in the sports fraternity. You see being a Ugandan sometimes doesn’t just circle around ancestry or holding the passport. Nope! It actually could go as far as reciting all the three stanzas of the anthem plus explaining every detail in the coat of arms. Think about it. If we really claim to love this country and going by the kind of celebrations around the nation when Steven Kiprotich, The Cranes, Dorcus Inzikuru and others win, then why can’t we passionately ask government, especially the Ministry of Sports, to provide what our stars and future hopefuls must have to prosper.
Over the years, we have repeatedly heard the responsible ministers talk about plans to have facilities either built or renovated. How many of the plans have really taken off? Few if not none. We instead have a big basketball venue in the hands of folks who don’t really want good basketball to take place at the same venue, have a person for whatever he gave is destabilising the Nakivubo stadium and we have also read that there is a time The Cranes weren’t
sure if their Afcon game would be held at Namboole. So, of course, we won’t strip like the Makerere University PhD holder you saw on TV, but we are really demanding answers as to why our sports facilities aren’t readily available when needed and in very good shape and publicity?! I hope the government, through you madam minister, does more. We have the talent, please use the taxes collected to provide the facilities and environment.
...Support the hippos this Saturday The Uganda Hippos, the junior Cranes, have a hurdle to negotiate on Saturday against Rwanda in the CAF U-20 qualifiers. We drew 1-all in Kigali. Of course we need to win, make the next round, beat Egypt, make the championship in Lusaka Zambia. But the bigger picture shows competition for places in the future for the senior side, shows more kids being motivated to work hard and generally creates a bigger pool of very competent players which in turn improves
our football. Unknowns like Michael Nantamu, James Aheebwa, Emma Olinga, Yasin Mugume, Onduparaka FC’s Shaban Muhammad and more could all turn into household names in the future. Plus we deny another big regional rival a chance to make a continental competition at our expense. And of course the Hippos setup is again giving more Ugandan coaches a chance to make a mark at a continental level. Kefa Kisala
is the head coach, Daniel Kiwanuka (goalkeeping), Richard Wasswa and Arthur Kyesimira are assistants. I must thank Fufa for doing their work. Doing everything possible to attract and involve young and equally talented Ugandans. It’s good for the future Cranes and for our game in general. Let’s all go to Namboole, this Saturday, and cheer on the lads. Our lads. Our future. Kabuura is a Supersport commentator and Radio City presenter. @andrewkabuura

Arsene Wenger is what happens when leaders stay around too long Arsene Wenger has been in charge at Arsenal for two decades, and that is a freaking long time. Like it is often the case with most leaders who have been around that long, their best attributes, and best years, are a long way behind them. If you are in doubt, you might want to look carefully around you. You might be able to identify at least one very good example… Back to Wenger: the argument might be made that not every one that stays around for a life time turns out to be a disaster as Sir Alex Ferguson illustrated at Manchester United. The counter argument to that would be that Ferguson was the excep tion, not the norm. Fergie in his time showed a matchless ability to mutate; to reinvent himself to PDWFK WKH VSHFLÀF GHPDQGV RI the time. When giving youngsters a chance was the thing en vogue, Fergie was not shy to turn Old Trafford into a nursery establish ment. When the world moved on to stocking big name, big money superstars, Fergie burnt his ÀQJHUV RQ -XDQ 6HEDVWLDQ 9HURQ before getting it right with the likes of Rio Ferdinand. These tricks were the kind Wenger proved to be painfully inept at learning. What Wenger’s tenure at Arsenal betrays about him is the fact that he is a man who, if he bought a shirt at £20 in 1996, would insist on paying £20 for the same shirt in 2016. That atti tude followed him into his coaching style; what served Arsenal well in the early 2000s was supposed to serve Arsenal well in 2011. Or even in 2016. It did not matter that new realities like Chelsea and Manchester City were reshaping the landscape
