He wants a billion for ‘wrong’ HIV diagnosis that cost him a big job Naguru based hospital The Surgery declared Godfrey Ntaro HIV+ when he underwent a mandatory medical check-up before taking up a lucrative job in Somalia. Tests from two other hospitals indicate he is negative, writes Moses Abeka

G

odfrey Ntaro, an aggrieved man has run to court seeking compensation of over Shs1 billion as a result of a lost job opportunity, psychological torture plus emotional and physical trauma arising from what he sayswas a false HIV diagnosis. In a suit filed in the high court, a copy of which Matooke Republic has seen, Ntaro says he was shortlisted for a job as a security guard in Somalia and was to earn a monthly salary of $1,200 (about Shs4.3m) for a period of two years. However as a prerequisite, the hiring company required that he undergoes a comprehensive medical check-up with their retained hospital, Naguru-based The Surgery. Ntaro says he went to the hospital on February 2 and underwent several tests including one for HIV as was required by the hiring firm. “The results indicated I was HIV positive and without any counseling, I was given a prescription of Anti Retroviral Drugs (ARVs) to start taking with immediate effect,” he says. Through his lawyers M/S Demott Law Advocates & Solicitors, M/S AyenaOdongo Co. Advocates and M/S Falcon Associated Advocates, Ntaro says the HIV results were transmitted to the labour company which found him ineligible for employment in Somalia and as a result, his job offer was cancelled. “The plaintiff (Ntaro) was very dazed with the results and the uncertainty of his future coupled with the attendant loss of substantially gainful employment in Somalia. Since he has always been a person of unsullied and virtuous character, he sought a second opinion from other medical laboratories to ascertain his HIV status,” his lawyers wrote. Ntaro says he went to Ebenezer Clinical Laboratory on February 14 to seek a second opinion and the test results turned out HIV negative. He took his results to The Surgery and was apparently asked for more money to take another HIV test whose results he says were never shown to him, something Ntaro’s lawyers described as a desperate attempt to conceal their (The Surgery’s)“gross negligence”. “The Surgery instead menacingly hoarded him off their premises and insisted that he should just continue taking ARVs,” Ntaro’s lawyers say. Ntaro says that on February 20, he decided to carry out another HIV test at the Joint Clinical Research Centre and the results also indicated he was HIV negative. He then went to the hiring firm, but the job opportunity was no longer available. As a result Ntaro wants court to compel The

Surgery to pay him Shs500,000 as his medical expenses and $28,800 (about Shs103m) as the salary he would have earned over the two-year period. He is also seeking $300,000 (about Shs1.08 billion) as general damages for gross negligence, psychological torture, emotional and physical trauma, severe pain and suffering.

Godfrey Ntaro

“Ntaro is suing The Surgery for loss of an opportunity for gainful employment, gross negligence, psychological torture, plus emotional and physical trauma.”

The Surgery defends itself In their defense filed by BKA Advocates, The Surgery says they carried out three tests including a screening test, a confirmatory test and a “unigold” test which all turned out positive. Unlike what Ntaro says that he was given ARVs before even counseling, The Surgery says the nurses advised him to see Dr. R.J Stockley who counseled him. Ntaro apparently told Dr. Stockley that he had taken an earlier HIV test which had turned out negative and the doctor told him that there wasone in 500 cases where the first test is a false positive so he was advised to take another test. He was also advised to undergo a CD4 count. According to The Surgery, things took a new twist when another man posing Ntaro came with his (Ntaro’s) passport and passport photograph to carry out similar tests

on February 8, but when the details were keyed in the computer, Ntaro’s name came up as he had taken the tests the previous day and the man disappeared. Ntaro apparently returned that afternoon and was told about the man. The hospital says Ntaro told them that there were many applicants staying in one room and someone had taken his passport. Apparently his CD4 count results were ready and indicated “a count of 694 and CD8 718 which is consistent with early infection.” The hospital says they however granted him a “fit for work” certificate because he would carry out his functions normally if he was taking ARVs. Apparently, Ntaro returned on February 15, with results indicating he was HIV negative. He was handed over to one Dr. Ntaate who advised him to carry out a PCR test, the best possible test to determine a person’s HIV status. It costs Shs150,000 at The Surgery but Ntaro who had paid Shs60,000 was given a Shs90,000 waiver. The Surgery says he declined to provide blood samples for the test. In their defence, The Surgery says they cannot be held liable for his loss of prospective employment income because they granted him a “fit for purpose” medical certificate.

Forever Young: The celebrities who look younger than their age

T

hey say never judge a book by its cover! Yes, there are many people out there with deceptive looks that can’t really tell their real age. For those

Ruth Kalibala

For starters, Ruth Kalibbala is that light skinned chic on the Lifeguard condom pack. Lifeguard has spent around 20 years on the market, which means that to be associated with their product, Kalibbala was of legal age of consent then. Recently news surfaced that she wanted to sue the company because she signed the contract when she was young and she is no longer receiving a cent from them.

looking for anti-ageing secrets, kindly contact these adults blessed with youthful looks. Here are some of the top ‘young’ men and women.

Natasha Sinayobye

Dancer, actress, and model Natasha rose to fame in 2001 when she emerged second runner up at the Miss Uganda pageant and was crowned Miss MTN Uganda. She has maintained her looks ever since the pageant and we are not sure how the genes have ‘worked in her favour’ all this time! Perhaps it was the years as a dancer with Obsessions and later Kombat which she formed 12 years ago with her babydaddy Michael Kasaija. Natasha is on the other side of her mid thirties.

Kalibbala started out her acting career in 1994 – 24 years ago with Afri Talent. She was a teenager who was still in secondary school then. Kalibbala has maintained her young looks just like Lifeguard has maintained her photo on their condoms two decades later. She still has that face that gets our hormones in a rush. Women rarely reveal their true age so we can only estimate that she is about 40. Perhaps, she should share the anti-ageing secret.

Calvin the entertainer

Being skinny has kept many TV stars young. UBC TV’s Calvin Da Entertainer has been at UBC for close to a dozen years now but he looks like the first time we saw him on TV. A few things have changed in his life including getting married and becoming a father, but he is still the same skinny lad with a lot of shaggy hair. Calvin is in his early 30s, but looking at him, you could say 30 is the new 20.

Micheal Ross

Michael Ross released his first single “Senorita” in 2002, bringing a fresh urban sound to the airwaves. He was compared to the great RnB stars of the time; Usher Raymond and R. Kelly. His dance moves earned him more flattering comparison. His six-pack got the girls crazy. To date, Micheal Ross still has the good looks that would place him in the late 20s. However, he is reportedly 36 years old.

MC Kats

MC Kats aka Edwin Katamba has maintained the looks of an O-Level teenager but he is old enough to father an O-Level child as his daughter goes to Nabisunsa Girls’ School. It is rumoured that his brood has close to 10 children, not adopted but biological! MC Kats started out as a teenager on WBS Teens show which earned him fame and a following. He is now 32 years old but looks half that age.

Roger Mugisha The legend of Roger Mugisha dates back to the early 1990s. He is one of the pioneer radio presenters and was a celebrity 20 years ago. At the dawn of the new millennium, Roger Mugisha founded the famous ‘Shadow Angels’, a girl’s group that brought erotic dances to Kampala nightlife. The controversy that shrouded the group and later

Bettina Praising Bettina Tumuhaise is a former music scheduler at KFM. She quit her office job, replacing her high heels with gumboots to become a farmer and she is one of the most famous farmers on social media as most of her posts revolve around farming. She could easily pass for a girl in her late 20s but she is 42. While many could be wondering what her secret to youthfulness is, Bettina revealed in a recent interview that she maintains a healthy lifestyle and watches over what she eats. “I stick to small portions because I live by the saying we eat to live not live to eat. Most of my food composes vegetables such as cabbage, nakati but mainly I prefer lettuce. I cook my vegetables for just five minutes so that they retain their nutrients.

Sometimes, when I am not so hungry, I eat vegetables only since they help to speed up the digestion of other foods. To keep my weight in check, I eat boiled foods three times a week. I eat meat once a week and choose to do way with milk and opt for spiced black tea instead. If I get a craving for junk foods, I will treat myself once a month,” she revealed. “I ensure that I drink the required eight glasses of water per day. I carry my water bottle everywhere I go. I do not drink soda and in case I do not take water, then I drink juice without sugar. To keep fit I swim once a week and jog every evening for about four kilometres. After a long tiring day, I make sure I get at least six hour of sleep,” she revealed. The results are clear for all to see.

its disbandment after he became again with claims that he had been a devil worshipper only made Roger Mugisha’s legend bigger. While the ‘Shadow Angels’ appealed to the interests of men, Roger’s looks struck a chord with the women and he has maintained the same ever since. He is currently the lead character in NTV’s Second Chance drama. Roger is in his early 40s.

Douglas Lwanga Just like his copresenter MC Kats, Douglas Lwanga has the looks of a teenager. However, don’t be fooled! He got married eight years ago, though that relationship has since hit the rocks and he is now with club marketer Lindah Lisah Mukasa. Douglas is 32-years old. Thanks to his

sense of fashion, he can easily blend with and engage a much younger audience. He wouldn’t be out of place at the Buzz Teeniez Awards.

ocialite Jack Pemba is doing it again! As he celebrated his 44th birthday last year, the flamboyant moneybags flew in legendary Congolese Lingala star Koffi Olomidde to entertain only 150 invited guests. All one needed to rub shoulders with the ‘Ndombolo ya solo’ star was to get their name on the guest list! However, this time round, Jack Pemba is flying in the star for his wife’s birthday, precisely, his ‘elder’ wife Sheebah! Pemba is the President of Pemba Sports Africa and also President of World Federation of Elite Martial Arts for Africa. Watch this space.!

oodlyfe’s surviving half Weasel has revealed he is forever indebted to his manger Chagga. In a video we received, the singer was speaking to one colleague while on their current trip in London. Weasel stated that most fans may not be aware that his story with Chagga started more than 10 years ago. Weasel revealed that Chagga kick started his life as a singer after he gave him his first album, adding the

album sold out due to Chagga’s direct involvement. Also, he further revealed that Chagga brings a whole different vibe to the studio atmosphere when recording songs in his presence. Reminiscing about the life he and Radio shared, Weasel said: “I am very blessed! When we started out with Radio, people thought we would soon fade away. After ‘Nakudata’ we kept on releasing hit after hit. After 10 years, we still had hit songs,” he stated.

The singer threw in the towel due to unresolved differe nces with the band’s management over performances. A source alleges that Eddy Yaw e has been having conflicting inte rests following the massive suc cess of his hit song ‘Tukigale’ feat uring Carol Nantogo. We have been informed that Eddy Yawe has sev eral bookings to his name thanks to the song. At the same time, it is a public secret that Afrigo Band is one of the most sought after music acts in the land. When the band management sat down with Eddy Yawe to reso lve the conflict, the parties did not rea ch an agreement. Eddy Yawe, who is a brother to singer and legislat or Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Win e, thus thought it wise to pursue a solo journey. Afrigo Band was founded in 1974 and continues to cultivate its legacy of electric live performances and timeless son gs.

hifah Musisi’s music is the kind that one needs to puff a breath of fresh air into a bad day, anytime , anywhere. I spent the entire Easter holiday reclining in thought as I couldn’t get Shifah Musisi’s Ebilowoozo off my playlist. This was just not the audio but the video. Shifah’s music has a rich uniqueness to it in that all her videos just seem to speak the same language as her audios. When you watch and listen to Ebilowoozo, you cannot help but get gripped into a very long stream of thought. The opening shot has Shifah Musisi seated on a bed in yellow bedroom garments in a dimly lit room with a dark golden tinge of what seems to be candlelight. In this same shot, she faces an open window lost in thought as she sings about being bombarded with thoughts of a lost lover who used

to be her comforter. She accompanies these scenes with great lyrical memories of her lover that have her gripped in this deep thought process. Michael Fingers puts a great instrumental harmony on the audio with Shifah’s signature acoustic touch, with a slow piano, hollow drum beats and the most distinct, the local violin (Adungu). This rich instrumental blend greatly compliments the other cinematic shots that follow up with a horse galloping in slow motion across the plains with an aged man playing the Adungu. The most striking being one in which a heavy golden sunset breaks through dark clouds with the horse’s gallop caught mid air. It’s a spectacular video that paints nothing but thought. Put it together with the audio and we have what Shifah Musisi does best, magic!

TREND ALERT!

DUNGAREES

What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? That would be a watch. I believe this is one of those items that every man should have; regardless of whether you are fashion forward or not.

I

recently saw an image of Singer Bebe Cool in a denim man romper and realised how easy it can be lately for you to share some of your wardrobe pieces with your man. Take the dungarees. These vintage pieces can be worn for a great casual look, if paired with a stylish tee and matching shoes. And yes, they are unisex. You can wear your washed out blue denim dungarees with a black tee, and accessorize this with a pair of sneakers and a pair of sunnies. Alternatively, you can opt for the shorter version of this fashion piece, and pair it with a vest and nude coloured of sandals. Please note that this piece is strictly casual and cannot be fitted into a formal ensemble at any point.

What is your worst buy ever? They say money can’t buy you class. Well I once bought bulky clothing and yet I was a little slim and that’s when I learnt that a proper fit is what makes your body look more streamlined. I also have this pair of monk shoes that I bought, but hated after taking a second look at them on my shoe rack. To this day, I haven’t worn them. What styling trick works for you all the time? Always updating my shoe game with selective sneakers, looking classy with a dope watch and fragrance. I try to experiment with different hairstyles that work best with my face shape. I always endeavor to put my personality into what I wear. It is also important to invest in a custom made suit. I discovered that the dark charcoal, grey and navy blue suits are suave and very fashionable. Any item we would not find yin your wardrobe? Mankinis!

ast week, supporters from different camps stormed the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) football pitch to witness the official nomination of their respective candidates. The University’s electoral commission has confirmed the nomination of five aspirants (all male) vying for the position of guild president out of the six that submitted their nomination forms. Among the nominated are include; Bashir Ibanda, Ntende Julius, Katura Brandon, Mugabe

Edson, and Mark Hillary Kayongo. The sixth prospective candidate Eric Mpora was not nominated due to failure to submit all the required documents. The EC gave him Wednesday as the last day to submit all the required papers as his nomination stays pending. The nominated candidates were given an opportunity to speak to their voters but they were not allowed to unveil their manifestoes due to limited time. They launched their manifestos yesterday when the second public rally was held. The first rally featured entertainment where each camp was tasked to send a representative to

entertain revelers as nomination of their candidates went down. It was at the entertainment moment when the MUBS booty queens showed what they got from their mamas by showcasing a couple of killer dance moves. According to the University’s EC, the nominated guild aspirants are expected to hold their rallies between 8am to 7pm around campus premises, whoever is found campaigning beyond the stated time would have initiated his automatic disqualification. -Campus Bee

Five reasons why a cold shower is good for you

M

ost of us have been caught in that cringe-worthy place of having to endure a cold shower. Taking cold showers instead of hot baths provides surprising health benefits — from burning fat to depression relief — for our skin and body. Here are some of them:

Increases alertness

Feeling cold water pour down over the body might be more horrifying than soothing, however, the deep breathing in response to our body’s shock helps us keep warm, as it increases our overall oxygen intake. Thus, our heart rate will also increase, releasing a rush of blood through our entire body, which gives us a natural dose of energy for the day.

Refines hair and skin

When it comes to hair and skin, one of the most natural ways to maintain your appearance is by taking a cold shower. Hot water has the tendency to dry skin, which is why

SCI-FACT

Study reveals the age men find women most attractive Here’s a warning: That old saying about wine getting bet-

it is best to use cold water to tighten your cuticles and pores, which will prevent them from getting clogged.

Stimulates weight loss

Cold showers have been known to aid weight loss in an unexpected way. The human body contains two types of fat tissue; white fat and brown fat. White fat is accumulated when we consume more calories than our body needs to function, and we don’t burn these calories for energy. This body fat piles up at our waist, lower back, neck, and thighs, and is the one we all struggle to eliminate. Brown fat is the good fat, which generates heat to keep our bodies warm, and is activated when exposed to cold conditions. A cold shower can therefore

promote brown fat activity.

Provides stress relief

Jumping into the shower without letting it heat up, or going into the ocean without slowly acclimating to it, can help promote hardening, increasing tolerance to stress, and even disease—a 1994 study found —and all this thanks to a cold stimulus. Relieves depression Cold showers have been shown to relieve the symptoms of depression due to the intense impact of cold receptors in the skin, which then send a considerable amount of electrical impulses from the peripheral nerve endings to the brain, producing an anti-depressive effect.

IS HE WORTH FIGHTING FOR?

ter as it gets older, absolutely does not apply!

It gets disturbing: A study says that as a woman, if you want to be attractive as you age, the best thing you can do is really just not age past 20. To the lowdown We live in a time where many of pour tonnes of time and money into staving off the signs of ageing—yet some disturbing data shows that as a woman, if you want to be attractive as you age, the best thing you can do is really just not age past 20. The data, published on Jezebel.com reveals some pretty depressing results about what men are looking for in women. All men, from those in their twenties to those who are fifty, want to date a woman in her early twenties. The most commonly chosen ages are 20-23. For almost every year in his thirties, a man is most attracted to a 20-year-old woman. And a 50-year-old man is really gunning for a 22-year old on his arm. What these statisticss imply: “A woman is at her best when she is in her very early 20s. Period,” said the article author, Christian Rudder. Or, you can look at it this way: Men’s expectations never, er, grow up. “A 50-yearold man’s idea of what is hot is roughly the same as a university kid’s.” Is it wrong to say that after the initial shock, we are kind of not really that shocked at all?

Y

ou must have seen that Facebook fight that happened during the Easter week… it is said to be about a man—or men. In its opening episode it featured people that ‘do a man’ on one side and those that ‘do men’, mbu, on the other side. It was hilarious as it was absurd. Unless you have a poor quality Facebook feed (meaning you need to find new friends on Facebook), you should know about the hilarious part. In this space, we will focus on the absurd

part. Women have been celebrating their ‘emancipation’ in this our land for about 30 years now, so you would think they are too busy climbing the corporate ladder to have time for fights over men. All right, all right, we won’t judge, because there can be one hundred and one arguments justifying why a woman would risk everything including her reputation to slug it out over a man. The key question is; is he worth fighting for? The answer is not found in whether or not your man can put you up in a nice house in a fancy neighbourhood, or whether your

birthday gifts from him take the form of a Mercedes Benz car, or a trip to Dubai or even the fact that he is a great dad. Ladies, here is the simplest way to test whether you should be fighting for him or not: if he is the kind of man that puts you in a position where you have to fight for him in the first place, then perhaps he is not worth fighting for at all. If you have agreed that you two should be exclusive with each other, then he should not make it your job to ward off all those other girls eyeing him. And you should not make it your job either.

ver wondered how you could pull off a simple and affordable wedding? A cocktail reception may be that unique idea you want to consider. One of the advantages of doing your reception this way is that it allows for a much more intimate atmosphere. A cocktail reception will ideally be held during the evening hours, particularly in gardens and may be by the lakeside, or an outdoor setting (it could even be at a church). The beauty of a cocktail instead of a conventional reception is that you can ensure the event is short— lasting no more than three to four hours because your guests will be standing. A few tables can be arranged for some of the guests like parents and older people who might be uncomfortable standing for long. A food bar station can be set up from which you can have guests serve or be served a variety of finger foods. With a guest list of about 250 people, a cocktail reception is something you could pull off for Shs1520m, about Shs10-15m cheaper than what a modest conventional reception would cost.

f you are unhappy with your room, there is a good chance one or more of these issues are plaguing your space. Follow these steps, and you will be pleased with the results.

Your rug is too small

Rugs can be very expensive, so it is easy to talk yourself into a smaller size. Here is the problem: when your rug is too small, it breaks up the floor into little pieces, making your room feel even smaller. On the flip side, when you have a generously sized rug in your room, the space feels lush and cozy. Here are two suggestions that remedy most rug situations: Get the biggest size that will fit in your room. Alternatively, layer expensive and inexpensive rugs. If you are coveting a nice, patterned rug but are not keen to spend a fortune on it, try a patterned rug in a smaller size, then layer it over a much larger natural fibre rug—so you will be able to get the proper size while also getting the pattern and colour you are looking for. Your furniture is too far apart Laying out a room is hard, but here is what this really comes down to — your furniture pieces are spread too far apart. You

probably need less space than you think. You really do not need that much space from one chair to the next. A quick guide you can use is to have the distance between coffee table and sofa at 8-18 inches and distance between pairs of chairs at 4-12 inches. No chair or sofa should be more than an arm’s length from either the coffee table or side table.

Not enough lighting

A beautifully lit room feels warm, inviting, and puts everyone at ease. But on the flipside, a room that’s poorly lit feels awkward. The cardinal rule of lighting: never rely solely on overhead lighting. Obviously if you have canned lights or a chandelier, you should turn those on. In addition to overhead lighting, mix it up and have a combination of floor lamps, table lamps, and sconces.

Wimpy curtains

Curtains serve several purposes in a room, more than just providing privacy. They bring softness to your spaces, make your ceilings look taller, add color and pattern, or help fill wall space. But one thing most people get wrong is when they hang curtains too low or their panels are not wide enough for their windows.

Rugby Sevens battle for core status in World Series BY WILLIAM KASOBA

R

eigning African 7s champions, Uganda Rugby Sevens are in Hong Kong this weekend as they do battle in the threeday Hong Kong Sevens tournament. Uganda is placed in Pool E alongside Japan, Chile and Georgia. Getting out of the group remains well within Uganda’s sights, considering that even finishing third in a group might still be enough for a team to advance to the knockout round. Not that our boys are aiming that low. If anything, there has never been a better chance to fly the flag higher since, according to the 2018 HSBC world rankings, of the 12 teams gracing the qualifying event only three teams made it to the top 20. They will also draw confidence from the fact that only Papua New Guinea is ranked above Uganda, coming in at 16 ahead of Uganda

in 17. These reassuring stats will, however, have to be reflected on the pitch too if we are to make our second World Cup appearance. Coach Tolbert Onyango, whose charges left for Hong Kong last weekend, will be relying on big guns Solomon Okia, Philip Wokorach and captain Micheal Wokorach to bring their A game if the team is to accomplish their mission. The tournament will also afford the team the intense kind of preparations they need for the Commonwealth fixtures in Gold Coast, Australia in a week’s time.

PLAYING FORMAT FOR THE EVENT

The qualifying tournament features 12 teams divided into three pools of four teams each. Each team will play the others in their pool once. The top eight teams (the top two from each group, plus the two best third-place finishers) qualify for the quarterfinals of the knockout round. The winner of the knockout round will gain core status in the 2018–19 HSBC World Series.
