Defence minister Adolf Mwesigye says the army council has resolved to increase soldiers’ salaries.
Y
esterday was World Press Freedom Day. A journalist or some mutation of the profession is alleged to have poked police into raining spiked clubs on fellow journalists who were carrying out a parallel function in protest at his alleged abuse of office. Before you wonder if such a thing can happen, this is Uganda, a banana republic, where Mango People live for God and their stomach. Robert Kagolo, the annoying stub who happens to be president of Uganda Journalists Association (UJA), has dug his ignominy a step deeper than a one Kyalimpa did with the same institution. The problem here is that there is a duly recognised body of professionals that is being run by charlatans. The majority of the people you find in leadership of UJA are professional jokes no stronger than a baby’s fart. As Ugandan journalists pretended to celebrate or is it mourn the state of press freedom in the country under the powerful theme, “Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies,” a reminder that they ought to lead the way in taking up what is theirs and making it worthwhile. The irony that kicks Ugandan journalists like the annoyance and excitement a baby’s kick in the womb gives an expectant mother is that they spend all day calling for this and that to be done this or that way. They shine the torch on many dark spots but never care to look in the mirror. Of course, the rest of the Mango People are not any better. We are all so

good at cheering other nationals who stand against bad governance and make the change they desire happen. But we never do anything. That is why someone arrogantly calls the national treasure “my oil” and that he is not our servant but just another man slaving for his family. But what to do now? The Kagolos represent a special breed of Ugandans. Sadly, they are here to stay. And we have to live with them. Like when you decide to suck tamarind, you just deal with the piecing chemicals. Talking of special breed of Ugandans who are here to stay, it reminds me that there is this caricature of a human figure called Kale Kayihura who heads the First Family’s instrument of intimidation and suppression of the masses. Kayihura is a typical breed of a Ugandan. And he is here to stay. For a regime that has been reduced to filling gabs that keeps it in power at all cost, it still beats my mind that some Mango People were actually thinking Kayihura could be dropped from ‘thuggering’ the former Uganda Police. There were even social media cheers that Gen KK had been sacked. Sack? Kayihura is like a rich man’s jalopy. Everyone complains that the darn car coughs like a viral upload, releases stinking fumes like a hospital incinerator chimney and much more. But the rich man can’t feel more secure in a car. All others cars give comfort but not security, so he is sure to rely on that jalopy. But all said and done, I think Kayihura is a good thing. He is the gift that keeps giving. He is the manuscript that never fails. He was deployed by his boss and the man gives him orders to execute. The problem is that Mango People expected more than the phantom dream could serve. A water dispenser might boil water for your tea, but that doesn’t make it a pressure cooker. Gen KK is just an instrument of the state, not a servant of the Constitution. Get used to this. jeyseaman@gmail.com

ho is this great white guy behind these amazing shots? Who is Giulio? First things first, my name is Giulio Molfese (pronounced Julio), my skin is white, but I am Ugandan.
Is Giulio Molfese really Ugandan? Yeah, I am a citizen of Uganda, I am exactly like you. The difference between me and you is that you were born in Uganda. You didn’t have a choice. Me I chose to come to Uganda because I like Uganda. It is a very beautiful country and I decided to become Ugandan. So, where was the story right before Uganda? I was born in Italy, and I have been a photographer for 29 years! Before I used to do a lot of social reportage, wars, immigrants coming to Europe, musicians, the famous Bob Dylan…etc. Me and my friends knew Uganda due to the social reportage and fell in love with its beauty, so we decided to move here to start something different regarding the game of photography.
Douglas Lwanga: Commanding the crowd.
The annual party on wheels, The Purple Party started its 2017 tours with a sold out concert in Jinja last weekend. The party which is hosted by NTV’s Douglas Lwanga brought down the roof of Jinja’s Bax Hotel as crowds were treated to some of the finest entertainers in the Pearl including ; Dj Shiru, Selector Jay, Deejay Bryan Gravity, Maro, Ykee Benda, Fille, Lil Pazzo, Eddie wizzy, Leila Kayondo, Big Eye, plus Jinja based artistes. The next destination will be Mbale come May 20 and later the wheels will roll to Mbarara on September 9. Here is how it went down in Jinja.
Children usually dream of becoming lawyers and doctors … was it photography for you from day one? It came naturally. My grandfather was an artist, a painter of portraits so I grew up in this artistic environment. I think it was a kind of natural path that led me to go into this visual language that is photography. For me it is not only a job but it is as well a way of expressing me. So it’s more of a natural calling cum passion.

How supportive were your parents? It wasn’t hard for them because I went to the university and I come from this art background. The most important thing with kids though is that you should let them follow their dreams and passions. If you want to be a businessman, a nurse, just to do what you want to do and do it right. Do it with a passion, do it with love, whichever job it is, do that and it shall definitely be rewarding. I’m sure Uganda is not the only country you have been to, so out of all these African countries, why Uganda? Well, because it’s the pearl of Africa. Uganda is beautiful, there is huge diversity. It’s a blessed country, its full of resources, water, rivers, lakes, mountains, glaciers, Mt. Rwenzori, I have been everywhere in Uganda and I know every little dusty road, the national parks, the wildlife reserves and the people themselves.
What’s your phobia? I don’t know. I don’t like insects in general, I mean; I don’t have friendly relationship with them but…dead silence.
