Bobi Wine to contest for MP
Five Ugandans killed in South Sudan
Musician Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi) will contest the Kyadondo East member of parliament seat which fell vacant after the High Court threw out FDC’s Apollo Kantinti. Kantinti was ousted following a successful challenge to his election by one of his opponents in the February elections- Sitenda Sebalu who cited various election irregularities. While Bobi is yet to declare whether he will run on a party ticket or as an independent, he has been particularly close to FDC’s Kizza Besigye in recent months and even visited him in jail.
Five Ugandan businessmen were killed in an ambush by armed South Sudan soldiers at Aruu junction Tuesday morning. The five were travelling from Juba and headed to Nimule towards the border point of Elegu, only to be caught in an exchange of fire in the South Sudan capital of Juba. The same ambush left their South Sudanese driver badly injured. The identities of the five had not been established by press time.
Besigye out on bail The High Court Tuesday granted Dr Kizza Besigye bail of Shs100 million not cash. In a ruling he delivered before a packed court room on Tuesday morning Judge Wilson Musene Masalu said he was satisfied with the arguments Besigye’s lawyers made in pushing for his release, among which were advanced age, the fact that Besigye had never had failed to appear before court as required in previous cases and that he was a responsible citizen. Besigye had been in Luzira for the last two months and faces treason charges for allegedly conducting his own swearing in.
Museveni orders rescue of Ugandans President Yoweri Museveni Tuesday ordered the evacuation of Ugandans trapped in South Sudan after fresh fighting broke out on Friday between forces loyal to South Sudan President Salva Kiir and those of his deputy Riek Machar. The fighting left hundreds dead. In a tweet on Tuesday, government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo confirmed that the president had ordered the evacuation of Ugandans in Nisitu by road. Army spokesman Paddy Ankunda said UPDF troops would be deployed to secure the movement of those rescued.
Landslides bury four in Bundibugyo Four residents of Kasanzi village in Bundibugyo district died after landslides in the area buried them alive. The landslides followed heavy rains in the region. The dead were buried alive in their houses by moving mudslides. In May this year more than 15 people died and 200 homes were destroyed in Bududa as a result of landslides. Red Cross and other non-governmental organisations managed to rescue a number of affected residents.

IGG starts investigations into NSSF Shs227 billion cost of Pension Towers at centre of accusation
T
Proxy war?
The accusations against Mr Byarugaba come in the wake of an earlier whistleblower document in which an anonymous person, claiming to be an employee of NSSF, accused deputy MD, Mrs Ssali of being “incompetent” and “insubordinate”. The four page document, says in part “As a responsible staff member, I am required by the Fund’s Code of Ethics to bring to the attention of management the conduct and actions of Ssali that I consider unethical or unlawful conduct.” They include alleged leaking of ‘vital information to the media on the running of the Fund, a thing, according to the whistleblower, that contravenes the ethical code required of all employees of the Fund. The same whistleblower also brings into question Mrs Ssali’s academic credentials, saying that she is not qualified for the position of deputy MD and that “she lied about her track record and experience.” The enduring feud between Mr Byarugaba and Mrs Ssali climaxed when Ssali was denied access to her office on return from maternity leave. In a March meeting, NSSF’s Board of Directors resolved to suspend the deputy MD and commence inquiries into allegations of misconduct and gross insubordination. Mrs Ssali challenged this in the High Court, where it was ruled that NSSF reinstates her. However, that court order was not complied with, leading her to sue NSSF again, this time for contempt of court. The High Court ruled in Mrs Ssali’s favour, and awarded her Shs200 million in compensation. She is back in office, although the Fund has since appealed that ruling.
NSSF responds
In a statement published on its website, NSSF pledged to co-operate with the IGG’s office. In the same statement, NSSF however denies any wrongdoing in its decisions involving placement of fixed
Poisoned chalice? The feud is a continuation of what has been a common threat in NSSF since it was established in 1995 by an Act of Parliament to provide social security services to employees in in Uganda. Its first chairman, Elly Karuhanga left a disgraced man after he irregularly procured for himself a sleek Mercedes Benz. Abel Katembwe was retired in 1998 in public interest after a committee of Parliament on economy and parastatals recommended his sacking citing influence peddling.
BY OUR REPORTER he Inspector General of Government has commenced investigations into alleged corruption at the National Social Security Fund. In a 27 June letter to the NSSF managing director Richard Byarugaba, the IGG states that the purpose of the communication is to introduce two investigating officers “who have been authorised to conduct the investigations and obtain relevant information/documents”. It is the fifth time NSSF, valued at over Shs7 trillion, comes under the spotlight. At the heart of the investigation is a whistleblower’s dossier which alleges that Mr Byarugaba hiked the cost of Pension Towers to Shs227 billion from Shs181.5 billion. The cost had been slashed by Geraldine Ssali Busulwa in December 2014, as acting MD at the time. The whistleblower goes on to allege that the increment, upon Mr Byarugaba’s return from leave “was for his personal gain as well as that of his brokers”. The IGG’s office received the whistleblower’s document on May 5, 2016, according to a copy seen by this newspaper. Construction on the towers, located on Lumumba Avenue, was suspended after its retainer wall caved in claiming nine lives in 2008. Another allegation leveled against NSSF management and to be investigated is that Mr Byarugaba is given a monthly commission as a percentage of fixed deposits that the Fund places in commercial banks. NSSF is also accused of “squandering workers’ savings on political misadventures” when elements including the Fund boss allegedly funded former premier Amama Mbabazi’s campaign for the presidency.

deposits with commercial banks. “The decision to invest money in fixed deposits with commercial banks is made in accordance with the Fund’s Investment Policy Guidelines approved by the Board and the Uganda Retirement Benefits Regulatory Authority. “The Fund invests in commercial banks that meet Bank of Uganda minimum capital requirements and the Fund’s risk ratings. This process ensures that the Fund’s fixed deposits investments are transparent and not open to individual negotiations, manipulations and commissions of any sort.”
NSSF also explained the Pension Towers figure saying it was not arrived at by an individual manager or board member but rather scientifically determined by the project consultants based on technical requirements to complete the project and an independent market assessment. The Fund’s management also denied the allegation of bankrolling certain political individuals or parties, labelling the allegations “incorrect and unfounded” adding “our books and accounts are open for inspection and verification by appropriate independent authorities.”
In 2004 NSSF managing director Leonard Mpuuma was charged with accepting a bribe of Shs700m from James Isabirye, the director of Mugoya Estates. Mugoya Estates and NSSF were involved in a botched 400 unit housing venture in Nsimbe, Mpigi. The report noted at least seven allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the transaction between NSSF and Mugoya, including the loss of four billion shillings through over-valuation of 840 acres of land for the joint venture. It also pointed to a plan by NSSF officials to wrongfully lend five million dollars from NSSF to fund the joint venture. Then there was David Chandi Jamwa who was accused of causing a Shs3 billion loss to the Fund following his decision to sell Treasury Bills before their date of maturity between September and November 2007. He was sentenced to 12 years in jail by the Anti-Corruption Court.

MEN WHO CLAIM
to be Jesus Christ
Semakula (R) is the Nakaseke man who believes he is Jesus! He is currently in jail.
Solomon Semakula, is in prison in Nakaseke District. His crime? Starting a cult referring to himself as Jesus Christ. In fact when he appeared before court on Monday, he refused to respond when the judge called out his name, insisting he should be referred to as Jesus Christ. Semakula is not the first as there are many people who have claimed to be Jesus Christ, the world over. Matooke Republic We bring you the most popular ones of the lot.
Inri Christo Brazilian national Inri Cristo doesn’t only claim that he is the Messiah, but he also dresses and looks quite similar to Jesus Christ, except for the fact that he is 66 years old and rides a motor scooter when he’s not busy preaching his “Word.” Inri Cristo lives in a farmland outside of
Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez In 2011, Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez tried to assassinate President Obama by firing nine shots at the White House. Five days after the failed assassination, Ortega-Hernandez was caught in western Pennsylvania. So, why did this man try to kill the President? Apparently, he believed that Obama was the Antichrist. Aside from that, he also strongly believed that he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ whose mission was to stop the Antichrist from ruling the world. He even made a video declaring this delusional claim, “It’s not just a coincidence that I look like Jesus. I am the modern day Jesus Christ that you all have been waiting for.”
Brasilia, which he claims to be the New Jerusalem. Though he is branded by many people as crazy, this old man managed to attract hundreds of followers from around the world. And you’d be surprised to know that the majority of them are beautiful women who are devoted to serving him. Inri Cristo claims that God spoke to him in Apollo Quilboloy Apollo Quiboloy is the founder and leader of the The Kingdom of Jesus Christ The Name Above Every Name, a church that is based in Davao City, Philippines. Quiboloy is a very charismatic person who has attracted six million devoted followers. Four million of them are in the Philippines while the remaining two million are living abroad. Quiboloy claims to be the Appointed Son of God or the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. According to him, God has entrusted him with the Sonship and has appointed him to become the Saviour of the Gentiles or non-Jewish people. In April 13, 2005, Apollo Quiboloy declared that God has entrusted him with the Kingship. This Kingship that God has supposedly given to Quiboloy gave him the authority to govern God’s Kingdom and execute His laws throughout the world. He also claimed that since 2005 he has been living a state of “sinless” existence. Quiboloy is a very influential man in the Philippines. He is respected and sought out by many Filipino politicians due to his vast number of followers
1979, revealing to him that he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Since then, he has been to 27 countries to publicly declare this “truth.” In his efforts to convince the lost that he is the “savior” they need, he has been arrested by the police a couple of times and has even been expelled from the UK, Venezuela, and USA.
Moses Hlongwane In 2013, Moses Hlongwane, a South African man appeared on the eNews Channel Africa to declare publicly that he is the black reincarnation of Jesus Christ and that he is immortal. In that TV interview, Hlongwane said that he was “getting ready” to perform miracles like curing the lame and blind and even resurrecting the dead by “opening the graves.” His claims might seem too preposterous for many us, but surprisingly Hlongwane has managed to convince several people to become his followers. Some of them, like 84-year-old Paul Sibiya who is giving his whole pension as offering every month, are giving all of their possessions to him. Allegedly, Hlongwane is using the money he receives from his followers to spread his own version of the “Gospel” to the world.

Alan John Miller Before claiming that he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, Alan John Miller or simply known as AJ worked as an IT specialist for an Australian company. What makes his claim quite interesting is the fact that he publicly declares that he has vivid memories of the crucifixion. According to him, his suffering and death on the cross wasn’t as “harrowing” as many of us imagine it to be. What’s more, AJ claims that his partner, fellow Australian Mary Luck, is Mary Magdalene— the prostitute whose life was changed after Jesus Christ rescued her from her persecutors.
Sergey Anatolyevitvh Torop Sergey Anatolyevitch Torop claims that on August 18, 1990, he received a revelation from God, a revelation that changed his life and the 10,000 people who believe in his teachings. Also known as Vissarion or the Teacher, Sergey claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and has founded his own church called the Church of the Last Testament. Vissarion and 4,000 of his devoted followers live in Petropavlovka—a man-made utopia where consuming meat, drinking, smoking, and cursing is prohibited. Petropavlovka is a self-sufficient community that surprisingly doesn’t use money for survival. Before Sergey became Vissarion, he worked as a traffic cop for the USSR. The disintegration of the Soviet Union caused him to lose his job. Following this event, he received the divine revelation that led him to claim that he is the Christ. One fundamental aspect of the Church of the Last Testament is their belief in the “outer space mind” or aliens.
David Shayler David Shayler was once a British agent who worked for MI5. However, in 1997, he made a terrible mistake by accusing MI5 and MI6 of doing illegal activities and mismanagement. His bold accusations eventually got him into deep trouble— his career got ruined, he got imprisoned, his girlfriend left him, and no one would hire him. Interestingly, these misfortunes in life led David Shayler to believe that he is the Messiah, the modern day reincarnation of Jesus Christ. He strongly claims that he has supernatural powers and that he can control football results, affect the weather, and even stop terrorist threats. But surprisingly, these self-proclaimed “powerful” Messiah admits that he uses cannabis. He justifies his use of drugs by saying that cannabis “makes you more spiritual…and takes you closer to the light.” Unlike the other Jesus wannabes discussed in this list, Shayler hasn’t managed to gain followers. In 2009, it was reported that he was living as a squat in a farm owned by the government. Also, you’d be surprised to know that this man who claims to be Jesus Christ is a transvestite. He dresses like a woman and goes by the name Dolores Kane. David Shayler was once an articulate man who went from an excellent MI5 agent to a homeless “tranny Jesus.”

LETTER TO MY MANGO PEOPLE JACOBS SEAMAN ODONGO
Police’s comical absurdity T
Of Police’s comical absurdity and Leo’s roadside phone stunt There is something comically absurd about the once envied Pearl of Africa turned Peril of Africa by the so-called patriots who believe that our Mango People must be eternally
grateful for their shedding of blood in the bush. I say comical because the absurdity is as amusing to my Mango People as it is saddening. On Tuesday, the nation watched with bemusement as a convoy of the so-called Uganda Police Force whipped anything that looked like human flesh on the roadside under the guise of stopping people from serenading the released, on bail, of Dr Kiiza Besigye. I know we are just a bunch of mango-eating people to the regime in power, but if you are going to behave like that just because you have the reins in a banana republic, then you had better been born with wrinkles in your eyeball. I was watching a clip of the Police charade on social media and a friend who stopped by
my desk cringed. I was smiling and this chick was cringing. She asked why anyone would smile at such a debasing behaviour in the twenty-first century. I told the chick that the whole thing was comical absurdity. How? she had asked, squinting at the images on the computer. Well, for starters, my dear Mango People, the Police have long crossed the rubicon. They are beyond redemption. However, you cannot fault them and Mango People are wise enough to know this, hence their turning of the other cheek to bear the brunt of the whips. These people, the Mango People, they are aware that even a dog has to be left alone when it is eating, I had finally used a Korean
adage to explain to the chick. She did not get it, so I told her that the Police or Kifeesi or both of them--the thugs whipping innocent people under the guise of stopping them from forming a procession on the road--they had been thrown some crumbs here and there and had to be left alone to enjoy it. I do that to Nando, my dog, not that I ever beat her anyway, just like Mango People never stand up to Police. Otherwise, one only imagines what would have happened if some of those innocent Mango People being flogged for merely coming out to greet a man they love, some even just road users on normal business, had retaliated with stones that sent a few of the charlatans hiding behind guns into hospital.

Maurice Kirya to release another duet with Ne-Yo
Irene Ntale to hold ‘date night’

uring his stint at the Coke Studio last year, singer Maurice Kirya had the opportunity to record with American R&B sensation Ne-Yo. Maurice was part of a collaboration titled Reason which NeYo recorded with African stars that included Dama, Alikiba, Wangechi and Ice Prince. We’ve learnt Ne-Yo and Maurice did so much more than Reason, as the Never Been Loved singer told us he will be dropping another duet he penned with Ne-Yo. “We penned a song together
and it’s been in production all this long, but those are some of the surprises my fans should expect at my concert,” Maurice said. Maurice will hold the ‘Kirya Live’ concert at the end of this month-on Friday July 29 at Kampala Serena Hotel and unlike several musicians that made it a habit to hold a mega concert each year, Maurice says he will continue his arrangement to hold a concert at least every after two years.
rene Ntale is finally set to hold a concert come August 26. Dubbed Date Night Sembera, the event will be the first of its kind, according to Irene’s manager Julius Kyazze. He says the concert is a special concept designed to attract couples and people that appreciate love. “Irene’s music appeals to many people in love or those intending to fall in love. That’s why we decided to do a date night, specially for people that are in love or appreciate love,” Julius told us. Irene had to cancel her concert last year after the organisers of the Konshens vs Busy Signal concert scheduled their event on the same date as she had announced. Even this year though Irene will not have August 26 all to herself as comedian Salvado had already set the same date for his Africa Laughs comedy show. Date Night Sembera, will be held at the Sheraton Gardens and tax will be Shs50,000 and Shs100,000 for silver and VIP sitting respectively.

ew NTV Xpozed show host Mc Esco recently scooped a deal to co-host the first ever Luxury Insta party. The Luxury Insta party is slated for July 22 and will happen at Guvnor. The party is organised by Dope Divas Inc, that is headed by Mc Esco’s co-hostsocialite Dorothy Kulabako aka Dorothy Deirdre. According to Deirdre, the Luxury Insta party is a social party that is “all about class, elegance and comfort” as partiers are given an opportunity to interact, socialise and connect with each other instantly using their
Instagram accounts. Esco described the party as “physical online partying” and during the event, partiers will take pictures, record videos and instantly upload them onto their Instagram accounts, share with their followers. Deirdre told Matooke Republic there will be rewards for partiers that will use their Instagram accounts “outstandingly”. She added: “We shall have rewards for three categories; Coolest upload of the night, Best Dressed Persons- male and female, most uploads by a reveller.”
apital FM veteran presenter Alex Ndawula is known to fancy his drink but during the Blankets & Wine event last weekend, he might have had a bit too much of it. Trouble started during the Euro final match between France and Portugal when the visiting Mi Casa band members retired to the Multichoice VIP tent to catch the live action, and Alex found his way into the tent. The band members were seriously engrossed in the match when Alex decided to engage them in conversation. But while at it, Alex stood in front of the screen, which didn’t go down well with the band’s lead singer
J Something, who asked the veteran presenter to find a seat. Alex heeded and he squatted down, but went on with his conversation that involved asking J Something a few questions. Realising the South African star was not listening to him, Alex lost his cool; he called the singers names before staggering to his seat. Even in his seat, which was a few metres away from where J Something sat, Alex continued to hurl insults at the visiting musicians. Despite attempts by the band manager and Val Oketcho to calm Alex down, the loud veteran presenter wouldn’t budge. It took Multichoice officials calling in a bouncer who threatened to throw Alex out for him to sit back and reduce his insults to whispers.

ccording to Crane Management Services Managing Director, Rajiv Ruparelia, the real estate development company is on a massive plan to change the Kampala skyline. Considering the enormous projects they have undertaken in the recent past and more in the pipeline, this statement is not a bluff. The real estate firm that is part of the Ruparelia group has just “cleaned up” some shabby buildings on Kampala Road, replacing them with the mag-

I needed someone with her kind of exposure and music skills to help me put it on the music level I needed it to be. How much did it cost you to record? Well, the recording plus the video wasn’t all that costly. We spent about Shs7m all together. ‘’Pressure Ya Love’’ was the last time we heard from you; do you intend to come out every now and then to do a collabo? I intend to come out [of] doing collaborations
part time to doing music as a full time career. I have a lot of solo songs in store that will take this town by storm. My music will put the industry on another level now that I’m dedicated to it. Any chance you’re giving us a solo anytime soon? As a matter of fact, yes. I have a solo called ‘’Byebyo’’ which is out already although I’m still working on the video. What else do you do apart from music? I’m a Tourism graduate from Makerere and I also achieved a tourism postgraduate degree in England although I’m not yet practising. I want to first put my music passion in gear and then later I will be able to practise what I went to school for. How do you rate ‘’Wadawa”? I will say that “Wadawa’’ is a hit song. It’s catchy and I don’t think we could have done it better. It’s just the result we envisioned when we embarked on the project. What are your thoughts on our music industry? Well the top most challenge we have in the music industry in Uganda is the lack of copyrights. Most artistes are struggling because their hard work is paid little if paid at all. Even producers don’t benefit so as a result they produce incompetent work to be able to squeeze the little they can get out of artistes.

efore the takeover of the high-waisted jeans, every Kampala girl’s biggest nightmare was the low cut pants. Having to flash the back of your panties was norm. But with the duster coat, that should be a thing of the past. This stylish coat is a nice way to finish off your skinny jeans and tank top looks. This coat is rather light and quite easy to wear even in the hot weather. And since it’s available in pastel shades like lilac and mint, it’s the perfect way to make a fashion statement. But do not feel the need to restrict this coat to jeans, you can wear it on body con dresses, or even maxi skirts for a great look. The best idea is to have two of these,so you have many options to choose from.

PARENTS DEMAND SHS2.6B FROM MAK FOR MOB JUSTICE VICTIM DAVID OJOK
A
mob of students beat a young Information Technology specialist David Ojok to death mistaking him for a thief on the evening of April 12 2015, at Makerere University’s Nkrumah Hall. The family of the deceased represented by lawyers from Center for Legal Aid have sued the university demanding Shs2.6 billion as compensation for their son’s brutal murder. This comes two months after criminal charges brought against the three suspects in the crime were dropped due to insufficient evidence. The lawsuit which will be heard by the High Court, describes Ojok as “an ambitious, hardworking and illustrious young entrepreneur and fast-rising consultant in the (ICT) field. He was a renowned computer programmer, software developer and engineer.” The lawsuit also indicates that Ojok earned an estimate of Shs5m per month and would use it to pay his tuition, his three siblings’ tuition and take care of his

aging parents. Ojok’s father Mr Maxson Okidi, a policeman, claims that the university could have prevented his son’s death, which is why the family is holding them liable for their emotional distress. Okidi also adds that Ojok was subjected to cruel, inhuman, degrading treatment, intolerable pain and death, a result of the university’s negligence. The lawsuit also details that, “Beside the financial compensation, the family also wants Court to order Makerere to rename Nkrumah Hall to “Ojok Hall” not only in memory of the deceased, but also as a lasting indicator of its commitment to stamp out mob justice on its premises, construct a security wall around the campus, install CCTV cameras equipped with night vision at Nkrumah and other halls since the criminal trial collapsed partly because suspects could not be identified.” This is a developing story. We’ll keep you posted about the court proceedings.

Home remedies for sinusitis relief BY IRENE M. NAMARAH
H
ave you ever had that burning inflation of the nose that makes your head feel like it’s been loaded with wet cement? You sneeze, blow your nose like your life depends on it and feel like your face, especially forehead, is on fire. It could be a viral/fungal/bacterial infection and can easily be treated with medication, but sinusitis is often not necessarily an infection and so medication may not be of help. A person who has weak mucus membrane lining (sinus) is susceptible to develop sinusitis at any time. This happens when the lining becomes inflamed due to a series of factors including cold, strong scents, too much humidity and dust. The signs and symptoms of sinusitis are often mistaken for those of a common cold, but whereas common colds are gradual, a person with sinusitis will have a full blown attack in no time. Sinuses are also prone to reoccur at any time. Before you decide that you need medical attention, you will want to relieve your pain as fast as possible. Here are home remedies that will help you treat the symptoms.
Steaming Mix hot water with a few drops of eucalyptus or

pepper mint oil. Drape your head with a towel and enclose your head over the hot water and inhale the steam. This will help to break down the thick mucus.
Keep hydrated Drink plenty of fluids especially water, sugar-free juices and hot tea. This helps to drain out mucus from the irritated sinuses. Stay away from alcohol, caffeine and sugary beverages as they are dehydrating substances.
relate Unlocking the matters of the heart
Spicy foods, ginger and vinegar Spicy food mixed with pepper and vinegar like cider apple or cider vinegar is good at dissolving excess mucus. For better results you could also take lemon juice to further dissolve the mucus.
Grapefruit seed Grind dried grapefruit seeds and pulp into a fine powder. Mix in water and administer in nasal drop form. This will help prevent other contaminants from taking root in the already weakened and inflamed sinuses.
Vitamin C Vitamin C is one of the most recommended immune boosters. It is available over the counter in tablets, liquid and chewable form. Vitamin C can also be found in fruits.
Lots of rest It is advisable to take as much rest as you can to give the body enough energy to repair itself.

ou want him to leave you alone and then you don’t want him to go. You don’t want him to touch you and then you want him to. You feel so bad about it that your inside reaches out for him but your body pushes him away. Sounds familiar? You could be having a perfectly wonderful time, laughing, talking, teasing and then your guy makes a completely innocent remark which rubs you the wrong. You shout at him for ruining your mood when you truly believe that your anger was uncalled for. You try so hard to let it slide but it’s like a pain in the wrong place. Your significant other tries to talk to you but he doesn’t understand a damn thing because whatever it is you’re feeling, you don’t understand it either. Of course you cannot expect it to be
party time at all times in your relationship, but what if you or your boo suffer mood swings? Although it’s usually not a cause for alarm, it could also be a sign that you’re falling into clinical depression. Severe cases of mood swings could result into irreparable damage so the sooner you get a hand on it the better. Some ladies tend to experience mood swings more than others. It gets more bizarre when she’s out of the moody episode, she becomes the extreme opposite. Over bubbly, extra affectionate, super considerate, almost as if the mood swing was some kind of rebooting of the system. What irritates a lady more is telling her that her mood swings must be because of that time of the month, as if the problem is her hormones and not her boyfriend’s meeting with his pretty ex or something as nagging. Whereas premenstrual syndrome greatly affects
mood swings, a variety of other triggers can be highlighted. Lack of sleep, too much sugar and caffeine, illicit drugs and alcohol, stress and depression, and it could also be down to bipolar disorder. Do not wait for the situation to get out of hand to seek both professional and moral support. Getting yourself or your significant other out of a moody episode is easier said than done, but by taking deep breaths, meditating, taking a walk or simply taking a long bath can help you be yourself again. Also if you or your partner can trace the mood swings to a certain cause, it will help you quickly decide that you’re experiencing a mood swing and not a justifiable pang of anger or disappointment. This could simply be your or their personality so any other approaches to your hyper sensitivity may not be of help. You only need to know how to keep it in check.
a problem shared...
My boyfriend is overly messy I know most guys are messy; I understand it and have never had any issues with it. That’s until I met my current significant one. I didn’t notice his super messy side until about six months into the relationship and now I simply can’t turn a blind eye any longer. When I go away for a week, I will come back to a pig sty. All the week’s dirty dishes piled up in the sink, soil all over the house from walking in with dirty shoes, dirty clothes mixed with clean clothes... Sometimes I feel that he doesn’t shower unless I am around. We’ve tried talking about it, argued about it to the point that I threatened to leave him then he changes for like a week or two and
then he’s back to being messy. He gives me the excuse that he has no time for cleaning because he is always at work. I don’t know what to do please help a sister out.
Trisha Act like a mother and start beating the hell out of him while you tell him it’s high time to grow up from a boy to a man. Or this time don’t just threaten him that you’re leaving but act and go away for a while and give the condition that he either changes or risks losing you. Who really wants a messy idiot?

y cousin Tina talked like a radio. She was loud and she talked too fast. She talked and never got tired. While we walked to fetch water, Tina talked to and from the well. She had different jokes for every situation. But there was one problem. Tina’s lips were pulled by every mature person we had in our family more times than they were smeared with Vaseline. Our relatives thought she was an embarrassment. How does a girl brought up in our kind of cultural home be so careless and bubbly? It was not allowed to be loud and talkative. If you were that kind of child, they gave you names like; parrot or sewing machine. Tina had a rough time changing her character to meet people’s expectations. Today, Tina is the most celebrated radio presenter in my district. She is still loud, funny and bubbly. She was never “tamed” or confined by society. Different children have different characters. They are created differently with different unique talents. Some talents we know and can spot early, others we don’t know and can’t really tell that they are useful talents. As parents we fear to raise children who are “different” from the usual. When we spot a difference, we try so hard make them conform to the standards society has put in place for the everyday child. We compare them to everybody else and demand them to be like others. But why? We are tough and we become judgmental. We find our selves saying things like; “Don’t dance like that. Girls are supposed to be calm and put together. Leave that to the boys”, or we say, “You can’t join the boxing club. That’s a boys game”, maybe we say, “Bicycle competi-
tions aren’t for us. Leave it to your brothers”. Parents, I think this is wrong. We are supposed to empower our children. Support them and encourage improvement of different talents. We are supposed to spot unveil and celebrate the difference. Talent is everything. It makes your child stand out, it makes them proud to be different and if well groomed, talent could be a future source of

esterday I was up by 5am and had to leave home as early as 6am, because I had too much to do in only 24 hours’ time. But before I could rush out of the house, I woke my daughter and informed her that I had borrowed her water bottle. Was that really necessary? Yes! I assume every parent would love to teach their children all kinds of lessons like, love your neighbor, sharing is caring, respect people’s property and privacy and so forth. Well, it’s only right you start with such little gestures. Show that it starts with you from ‘now’ and not ‘later’ on in life. You also prove your point by practising what you preach. I in all honesty respect my children’s property just the same way I would do to any other person’s property. I will not just take my daughter’s water bottle without seeking her permission and hypocritically go on and on preaching the gospel of “Respect
Train them to‘Do unto others’... “. The first step in teaching your children to live by the Golden Rule is, of course, to live by it yourself. Model the values you want your children to develop. This means throwing your trash in a can instead of on the ground, putting grocery carts away instead of leaving them abandoned in the parking lot, and not using vulgar words at any time.
Quick rules Some of the concrete rules you can give your children that will help them learn to respect other people’s property are: *Ask before borrowing something, instead of taking it without permission *If you do borrow something, take care of it as if it were your own *If you break something, own up to it with an apology, then repair or replace it. This particular one, my mother taught me so well. I remember one time I broke her favourite cup and begged everyone
at home to call her, so that I inform her before she gets home (I was certain that her anger would have cooled down by the time she got home). You may need to remind older children that respecting people’s property includes intellectual property. In other words, don’t let any pirates into your house. It is not respectful or right to download or copy music, software, or movies without authorisation or even go through someone else’s phone. Eventually, they will absorb the general idea and develop their own radar so you won’t have to remind them all the time of what appropriate behaviour looks like. The simple rule should be: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Teach your children this rule, and teach them to live by it every day. I surely believe that so far so good with my children.

any Ugandans are not aware what Free Zones are. Even fewer know of the existence of a body known as the Uganda Free Zones Authority (UFZA). Free Zones are designated areas in which companies are taxed very lightly or not at all in order to encourage economic activity. According to the UFZA executive director Richard Jabo, the Free Zones authority was established in 2014 to boost investments, create jobs and promote exportsand therefore Free Zones are in the real sense job hubs for skilled and unskilled workers alike.
Creating jobs
According to MrJabo, the Free Zones shall create between 15,000 to 20,000 direct and indirect jobsin the areas of manufacturing, horticulture, energy, agribusiness/agriculture value addition among others. The Free Zones are located at Kaweweta, Nakaseke district, Olaba in Koboko district and at Entebbe International Airport. Mr Jabo further explained that at Kaweweta Free Zone, Ugandans drawn from the skilled workforce such as; engineers, technicians, medical personnel, accountants, agriculturalists, porters,
drivers and cleaners are expected to land direct jobs. He added that consultants, private security companies and external auditors are some of the other professionals expected to get indirect jobs. “The Nakaseke Free Zone was established to be a specially demarcated duty free enclave for the purpose of production, processing, packaging and export of agribusiness products,”MrJabo said.
Skills required
He explained that Olaba Free Zone, is demarcated to serve as an agribusiness value addition hub which is envisaged to attract skilled and unskilled workforce for direct jobs. “These include agribusiness professionals, machine operators, medical personnel, cleaners, drivers and security guards among others. On the other hand, consultants, external auditors and hired private security companies will benefit from indirect jobs”. The Free Zones authority director for operations William Mugerwa said Entebbe International Airport, which is adjacent to Lake Victoria is earmarked as a horticulture and fish processing Free Zone. The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning MatiaKasaijalast year
signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Turkey’s ASB Group to establish a special free zone area (SEZ) in Kaweweta in Nakaseke district. The minister said ASB Group, one of the largest Turkish companies in the energy sector, would bring its expertise in areas such as agribusiness, transportation, investment, oil, gas and engineering services. ASB Group chairmanSitkiAyansaid, “Our main target is to turn Kaweweta Free Zone into Uganda’s primary gateway and there will be economic spillover effects to the national economy. The project will attract local farmers to contract farming and will bring in about 200 entities into the Kaweweta Special Economic Zone,” he said.Jabo said Free Zones will enable Uganda to export her finished products to neighbours in the COMESA region, Europe, Asia and UAE among others. He listed the exports to come from the Free Zones to include; tea, coffee, fish, cotton, sugar and beef.
WHAT FREE ZONES ARE Free Economic Zones (FEZ) or Free Zones (FZ) are specially designated areas in which companies are taxed very lightly or not at all to encourage economic activity.
ynthia Mpanga was elected unopposed as the new Public Relations Association of Uganda President, replacing long time PR practitioner Henry Rugamba at the 39th Annual General Meeting held at Hotel Africana on last Saturday. “It’s a new and fresh challenge for me as I seek to grow and consolidate the recognition of the PR profession in the country, boardroom and in the marketplace”, Mpanga said at a press briefing shortly after the elections. Mpanga is the current Country Brand and Marketing Manager for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda. In the other positions, Sheila Kangwagye, Helen Kawesa, Stella Nkini Ndiwalana and John Fisher Sekabira were all elected unopposed for the positions of Secretary General, Treasurer, Deputy Secretary General and Director for Programmes respectively. Peter Odeke and A.G. Musamali were voted in after beating their opponents for the positions of Vice President and Director for Discipline respectively while Paul Mwirigi had to beat off stiff competition from Sarah Kagingo to be voted in as Director for PR. Prau membership grew 47 per cent.
STRIVE MASIYIWA
Brand integrity matters
D Strive Masiyiwa is a London-based Zimbabwean businessman and philanthropist. He is the founder and chairman of international telecommunications group Econet Wireless.
uring the last few weeks, I have written on the importance of sales and marketing skills. We’ve also begun to discuss the importance of building, nurturing, and sustaining a brand. I’ve tried to show you that behind the sales campaigns, promotions, and advertising you see on TV and in newspapers is a highly complex business tool which you must appreciate and master if you want to develop a profitable business. One thing I’ve tried to instil is the important of “brand integrity.” This is because, in the final analysis, a brand tends to take on the persona of its founders, and those who manage the business on a day-to-day basis. You must do your best, and try very hard, to instil in your brand a culture of integrity. This is not easy, particu-
larly as the business gets bigger, and you’ve moved away from the centre of day-to-day action. In my 30 years running a business, I’ve met and known some highly gifted entrepreneurs who looked ready to set the whole world ablaze, but after a few years, some of them failed spectacularly. Whenever I looked back on what had happened… more often than not, it was an issue of integrity. The other day, someone brought me an article from an African Internet newspaper (I won’t mention the name because I don’t want to judge them, only to advise). The newspaper is run by young entrepreneurs who follow this platform. In the edition brought to my attention, they had an article in which they purported to have interviewed me, on the phone, whilst
I was “in Denmark.” The interview was a total fabrication, and whilst I have heard that Denmark is a beautiful country, I’ve not yet had an opportunity to visit in my entire life. This saddened me deeply because of the harm they did to themselves, and the integrity of their brand. A newspaper, even one on the Internet, is a business. It’s a business whose brand must be based on integrity, because people come to it to be informed about what’s happening. The moment you start writing stories out of your imagination, and print them as true, you’re on your way to practicing the ideology of Joseph Goebbels (Hitler’s minister of propaganda). Last week I also commented on the practice of setting up fake websites on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other other social websites, pretending to be someone else. In the beginning, it seems to be a bit of harmless fun. This is how most drug addicts began -- a “little joint” became heroin…
It’s the same in entrepreneurship: The fake website can lead you to fake credit card identity, and fraud, and fake drugs that kill others… and maybe a very long prison sentence. It’s a slippery slope. Africa has some of the most gifted musicians and actors in the world. Most of them go unrecognized, and live in poverty. They could be making millions, and standing on the world stage just like the most famous European and American artists. The problem is simple -- “pirating” of their material, supported by some of their own fans who happily buy the fake products! This is blatant theft. Let’s do our best, every single day, to try and build brand integrity. We don’t need fake newspaper stories any more than we need fake drugs, fake credit cards, fake DVDs, and fake websites. The original is always the best, and it has brand integrity. Thank you.

dward Mukiibiwas born 30 years ago in Kisoga, Mukono, where his parents worked as small scale vegetable farmers. Mukiibi was recently named among the ‘top seventeen farmers doing much more than putting food on your plate,’ by globally respected agriculture website- www.ecowatch.com. He still lives in his hometown in Mukono, where he runs and manages a small two acre mixed farm entirely working with local and indigenous products. At a young age, Mukiibi developed a passion for farming, but when he started attending primary school, he was surprised to find that farming was being used as a form of punishment. “If you arrived at school late, misbehaved in class, or even spoke your local language instead of English, you would be sent out to dig in the field.” The school gardens raised food for the teachers, meaning students never benefitted from the crops produced. Mukiibi quickly realised this discouraged interest in farming among young people, and created, what he called, a “boiling in his heart”
that fuelled his desire to change attitudes about agriculture and traditional knowledge. At the age of 19, he was given an agriculture scholarship from the government. While at university, he began working with a maize hybrid that was high yielding if planted alone. Mukiibi’s belief in traditional agricultural practices, were reinforced when a drought in the country had a major destabilising impact because of this widespread mono-crop planting of the maize hybrid. After this, Mukiibi began working with farmers to re-integrate biodiversity into their farming practices. During this process, he started looking for organisations that believed in biodiversity and community in the food system, and that’s how he learned about Slow Food. Getting at the helm of Slow Food International Mukiibi became a member of Slow Food International, a large community organisation that recognised the importance of traditional farming practices like those used in Uganda, in 2008. It was the community he had been looking for. Mukiibi’s work on a project dubbed 10,000 Gardens Project, later led to him being named the Vice-President of Slow Food International in 2014 at the age of 29. Mukiibi advocates for a new model of cooperation that,
according to him, is often not based so much on donations and money, but rather on collaboration and an exchange of services.
Global recognition
The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation estimated that there are more than 570 million farms in the world, at least 90 percent of which are considered family farms. And in an article on www. ecowatch.com, Food Tank went all out to honour a farmer or team of farmers, collectively responsible for growing the world’s food. It was17 farmers doing much more than putting food on your plate. And among the listed 17 farmer heroes from around the world, working for innovation, sustainability, the environment and local economy, all doing more than putting food on our plates, was our very own Edward Mukiibi who stood at number ten. Mukiibi is described as a farmer that has experience developing community and school gardens in Africa through his Developing Innovations and as one “promotes food gastronomy, to strengthen traditional food systems and communities and to defend African biodiversity.” Mukiibi was also recently on a five city tour dubbed “Good News From Africa” food sovereignty tour in the US.

Some will be scary that you’ll think of turning them down at first sight. But, when offered an opportunity, don’t turn it down - no matter how scary. High risk often also means the best rewards, so just do it. Always ask for help: While doing your work, you’ll get stuck and the only way out might be a hand from a co-worker or outsider. Never shy away from asking for help. It has never been a sign of weakness - in fact it is a sign of strength. Just imagine you spend a day working on something wrong yet if you had asked for help it would take you far less time. You’re wasting your time, the employer’s time and of course money. So, whenever you feel like you need help, just ask for it and don’t forget to return the favour. Value every person: As you start your career, you’ll meet many people along the way.
Some will seem to matter more than others at certain times. But, don’t get tempted into thinking that some of those you meet don’t matter. Everyone you meet is a potential door to a new opportunity - in your career or personal life. So you need to build good bridges as early as possible for you never know what the future holds. Aim for promotion: There are countless scenarios of people who join a company at the same time but after a few years, they hold different positions. The same could happen to you if you do not set your targets as early as possible. In fact, you’re setting yourself up for failure if you don’t set your eyes on promotion. Of course the next step in your career may seem far, but this is the right time to prepare for it. Take advantage of trainings and professional development courses. Take criticism positively: Accept that you don’t know everything and can’t do everything. No one likes criticism, but it is best that you take criticism or feedback as though it is a gift. Many times the person criticising you only wants to make you better at what you do. Peter Kisadha works with Jumia Jobs. peter.kisadha@jumia.com
ADDING VALUE TO PEOPLE

on the job
Ann Muhangi is the MD, Wholesome Consult Ltd, a firm that specialises in personal development, and team building
W
hen did you join the employed ranks?
I was one of those lucky ones that got a job before graduating. In class one evening, (Mass Communication at Makerere University) when one of the lectures called out four names of the students that specialised in broadcasting. Outside the class was Mr Kalyango Junior- then WBS News Editor. He had been tasked to find journalists to start off the WBS news room. After a briefing we were invited for interviews, which I passed and was brought on board as a reporter then became a business journalist later
How much were you earning? I was earning Shs200,000 which was just enough to pay rent, buy groceries and a few shillings remained to have a bit of fun. I remember when we’d get our salaries I’d go with two colleagues to the supermarket across the street, buy Pringles, ice cream and take long walks while enjoying our goodies. At that time, our needs were basic and our dreams small.
When did you start rising through the ranks? At that time it was hard to rise through the ranks in a journalism setting, so I opted to move on and I got a job at a humanitarian organisation. While there, I got a call about a job opening at the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). After 11 years of service at the rank of Head of Investor Education and Communication [at CMA], I moved on to follow my passion.
How exactly did you come to your current rank?
During my later years at CMA, I started wondering about my passion; it was the opportune time to explore what lies beyond a structured system. That marked my journey into the private sector. Currently I am the Managing Director at Wholesome Consult Ltd, a company that is involved in personal development and capacity building of individuals and teams through team building among others.
What are the greatest challenges you’ve encountered? Personally, the greatest challenge I faced was not knowing how to deal with people effectively. If one lacks people skills and does not know how to manage their personality trait and that of other people they work with, then one may struggle.
What are your future career plans? My desire is to be one of the leading personal development coaches on the globe because that way I will reach more people therefore building more lives.
Who do you look up to in the career world? I do not look up to a specific person and this is not to say that there aren’t any.
However I have come to believe that each and every person has something special in them, that if we observe closely, we can learn from everyone and anybody.
What motivates you in your work? As a life coach and motivational speaker, I interact with many people, sharing life experiences and learning from me and I from them how to make either their relationships, finances, families or work better. What keeps me going is the fact that I add value to many people every time I do my job and while at it, I learn new things.
What books do you read? I am privileged to belong to a readers club called the TABLE. We have read books like Think and Grow Rich, How to Raise Your Own Salary, The Power of Now. We have just completed The Alchemist – a must read as it tackles life management and how to make major decisions.
Tell us about yourself. I am a life coach and a motivational speaker passionate about empowering people. I’m also an upcoming farmer, an entrepreneur, a mother and wife.

GIVE YOUR BEDROOM
a new lease of life
W
luscious one simply by hooking it up with a wall-mounted headboard. If you already have one, repainting it will be a good move as it will change the whole bedroom look into a brand new place. A removable headboard is also advantageous as you can always remove it or repaint it without having to change the bed.
e all know that the master bedroom needs that bit of extra attention. Whether it is big or small, costly or not, your master bedroom should be the stuff of dreams. It is, after all, the place where all the magic is supposed to happen, or happens. If you’re a creative junkie you will want to transform your bedroom into a sleeper’s paradise as frequently as you may fancy. All you need is some flexibility and a box full of ideas. Repainting Repainting can be a lot of things, but boring is not one of them. When you have finally decided on the color, it’s a first step onboard a train heading to the dream haven. If your bedroom is small, a light color coat of paint is more recommendable as it makes the room look bigger. Do not be limited though in exploring a mixture of contrasting colors as that’s when your uniqueness will bring a sense of adventure to your room. Perch up your bed You can turn the simplest bed into a
Dress me up If your bed still looks cold and lonely after perching it up with, it’s telling you to dress it up. Consider buying a new duvet cover and matching pillow cases. If you’re one who loves a lot of pillows, be careful not to over match the beddings, it will only result in a dull effect. Throw in a few contrasting colors to bring out a whimsical effect. Move it The slightest movement of furniture can do wonders to your bedroom. Your bedroom doesn’t have to be boring. You could switch your bedroom furniture with that in the other rooms because moving furniture around can give either room new life at zero cost.
Get rid of it If you don’t use something in your bedroom, get rid of it. Too much clutter can be a stress factor. Besides, you need a lot of space to showcase your sense of style. If you’re having trouble letting go of something no matter how useless it is, you could always hide it away in a store or a stylish container. Dress up the dresser Transform your dresser. A dull dresser can be brought back to life simply by repainting and accessorizing it. You could also switch the old knobs with stylish ones while doing the painting. Spoil yourself Who says that you must never spend your last coin? Invest in a rich, authentic rug and dazzling curtains. This will add a “wow” effect to your already “wowed” up bedroom. It’s advisable that you don’t match all colours in the room. If you’re having trouble contrasting the colours, talking to an interior designer will be money well spent.

Colourful foliage plants BY ANNET NASSOLO
C
limate is a very important factor to consider when choosing plants or flowers for your compound. All seasons are important; as much as we need the rainy season, we also need the dry season to harvest. However during the dry season, our compounds need a lot of attention especially watering. Most plants will flower less in the dry season, so how do we bring back our compounds to life?
The answer is colourful foliage plants, these bring vibrant colours to the garden, contrasting brilliantly with other foliage to create dramatic effects. One particular plant I picked interest in is the Mussaenda. Whereas there are many species around the world, the common one in Uganda is the one with red leaves. It will make your compound look beautiful and vibrant all year round.

he just concluded Euro 2016 championship will be unforgettable for players such as Gareth Bale and Antoine Greizmann, but these players represent only a small fraction of the stars who performed at the level expected of them. For every Bale or Griezmann there are two or three big names that never got going or flopped outright,
Kane has made himself the most effective English striker since the emergence of Wayne Rooney 13 years ago. Kane won the Golden Boot in the recently concluded season and nearly won the Premier League title too. But the Kane that arrived
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden) After enjoying a glorious last season with Paris Saint Germain, scoring 50 goals and lifting a domestic treble, Ibrahimovic looked ready to terrorise opposition defences at the Euros. He forced the own goal which brought Sweden’s equalizer in their opening draw with Ireland but an embarrassing miss in the 1-0 defeat to Italy was followed by defeat to Belgium, and an inauspicious end to his international career. Arda Turan (Turkey) Barcelona midfielder Turan’s status as an icon in his home country of Turkey meant fans were largely pinning their hopes on him to drive the team on in France. But after a difficult season at club level Turan toiled at the Euros, struggling to influence games from his wide left position. The 29yearold even had to endure boos by Turkish fans during the Turks’ 3-0 defeat to Spain. Harry Kane (England) Over the last two seasons for Spurs, Harry
the tournament proper got underway. This partly explains why Austria managed just one point in three games. David de Gea (Spain) After dislodging longtime number one Iker Casillas from the Spanish team, De Gea was expected to show he’s just as good in national team colours as he is for Man United. Instead, he was at fault for goals in the games against Croatia and Italy, which Spain ended up losing. Thomas Muller (Germany) Just like Bayern teammate Alaba, Muller struggled horribly throughout the tournament, despite retaining the full trust of his coach Joachim Low. After playing six games, Muller’s stats still read zero goals at a Euro tourney, in sharp contrast to his imperious World Cup scoring record.
in France was a pale shadow of the Kane at Spurs and by halftime in England’s second group game, coach Roy Hodgson had had enough and subbed him. David Alaba (Austria) David Alaba was one of Pep Guardiola’sfavourite players at Bayern Munich, because of his tactical intelligence and flexibility, excelling in almost every position on the pitch. He was also the star as Austria qualified with ease for the Euros, but Alaba was unable to reproduce his best form for his country when

Reflections on Euro 2016
ootball fans that are barely in their twenties could be forgiven for thinking the only way to win a major trophy on the international stage is by playing pretty. In a run stretching nearly 10 years and taking in four of the last five major tournaments, Spain and Germany have won two World Cup and two Euros while passing opponents into submission, making us temporarily forget how teams like Italy and Brazil won tournaments through a combination of sheer will power, brute force and only a dash of technique. Portugal came and changed all that around again. After a brutal second round elimination of Croatia, it was clear what Portugal wanted to do every game, yet none of their opponents could find an answer. The Selecao’s triumph was a refreshing reminder that football tournaments can still be won by teams that prioritise defence; teams that can be solid without being spectacular.
Too much power, not enough poise for France Sometimes one of the good things that comes out of failure at major tournaments is the opportunity to ask the uncomfortable questions about issues that would otherwise have been swept under the carpet had everyone been sucked in by the euphoria of winning. If France had won the Euros, for example, not many would be concerning themselves with questions as to whether the obvious lack of poise in midfield poses some danger to future French assaults on major tournaments, especially as they won’t have any home advantage. Les Bleus’ lack of a conductor in midfield—a Toni Kroos type went unpunished when it should have been and got most brutally exposed when France could least afford it—in the final against Portugal. France have lots of power in midfield; Paul Pogba, Blaise Matuidi, Moussa Sissoko… But what is power without control?
Germany got it so right it’s now gone wrong After giving France a comprehensive football lesson Germany also gave Les Bleus a gift. It was the story of the best team at the just concluded European championships that for all their quality, Germany made work that little bit easier for their opponents— twice. First there had been the age-old nemesis Italy, who they worked hard to lose to—without succeeding. They continued in self-destruct mode against France, and this time did not get away with it. On the surface, Germany struggled because they didn’t have the man to finish all the intricate passes by their stellar midfield. The untold story of Germany’s struggles is that in remaking the team into one that prioritises possession, nearly every German player coming off the production line in the last decade is built to be a playmaker. As things stand, Germany now has a goalkeeper that passes the ball
Sport
better than half of the defensive midfielders who were at the Euros. Die Mannschaft might have wanted to fix a longstanding problem of lack of creativity but the irony is they got it so right it is now starting
to go wrong. Germany placed a premium on the ability to play the ball, it ended up killing its strikers and full backs.

vek back, upl more competitive
arlier this week, I saw pictures of Vicent Kayizzi’ unveiling at KCCA FC, and was impressed. Of course it was not the kind of welcome Manchester United offered Zlatan Ibrahimovic in England which came with a helicopter for transport, dozens of reporters, pictures all over social media and all. In fact to Manchester United, the Kayizzi presser was a joke. But I loved it for three reasons. One, the club so values its fans, that communication of the new arrival was passed on in real time with a few pictures to confirm it. Two; even with a makeshift press room, the technical area next to the touchline, the club made sure the media was welcomed to a well branded set and a well suited Vincent Kayizzi which is the professional thing to do. Three and maybe most importantly, Mike Mutebi and his bosses at Lugogo are taking the upcoming campaigns both locally and on the continent very seriously. Of course the mayor’s boys will play CAF Champions League football next season. Vincent Kayizzi is just another arrival after Brian Majjwega and Goeffrey Serunkuma which undoubtedly massively improves their forward line; a forward line that didn’t look positively predictable last season with Mike Mutebi having to chop and change his attackers and formations. KCCA is not the first club to unveil players this way in Uganda, so don’t think I find this groundbreaking and worth archiving for the future generations to know there was a first in the month of July 2016. No. The difference is it comes at a time when you feel it’s most needed by the club, its fans and Ugandan football. We must strive to go pro and not just let fans know about their new signing while kicking off the first fixture. The same KCCA FC held a trophy parade the other day driving through various parts of the city showing off their prized asset. This did not only get them a few new fans but also showed how ready this club is to up their standards.
That said, the recent events in Lugogo have sent shock waves to the boardrooms in Nsambya and Wankulukuku forcing both SC Villa and Express, respectively, to come out and get a share of the back pages. In the red corner, for example, there is new management with minister Nakiwala Kiyingi taking charge. You always felt among the VEK (Vilaa, Express, KCCA), it was Express lagging behind. They might have finished three points ahead of Villa in third but truth be told, they have been punching way below their weight. With all three giants known to have a cult following, Express has decided to awaken theirs by bringing in top musician Bobi Wine as an ambassador which should work wonders. He identifies with the fanatics. After the news, I tweeted expressing my reservation on maintaining Wasswa Bbosa as coach but the Sam Ssimbwa rumours reflect the ambitions the Red Eagles could have. In the blue corner, Eng. Ben Misagga is quickly gaining the reputation as a no nonsense boss. He chops and changes managers more than Kizza Besigye has appeared in Ugandan courts of law. Which could mean the rich-man is making sure he gets the very best for the Joogos. It also could mean he is not sure what is best for them, though. The reason for this piece is to awaken those sleeping fans who thought the VEK rivalry was dead. It could get even better next season, making for a mouthwatering campaign. Bring on the 2016/17 season. @andrewkabuura
