We can’t beg for money when Ugandans are chatting endlessly for free - Museveni The president also says that it is neccesary to tax mobile money to get businesses in the informal sector to contribute the country’s development BY ALEX TAREMWA

P

resident Yoweri Museveni has spoken out on social media and mobile money taxes saying Uganda cannot be begging for money to finance the country’s development when Ugandans are chatting endlessly while making foreign companies rich. “Ugandans must ask themselves, when you post on social media platforms like Facebook or whatever, is it for free or do you pay? Do you send mobile money for free or do you pay? If you pay, whom do you pay?” he queried. Museveni further noted that multinational companies such as telecom companies have been milking Ugandans at the government’s expense adding that it is time for the government to cash in. He blamed the telecom companies for the new taxation on social media and mobile money transactions saying that they had been cheating government of billions of dollars in taxes by under declaring their earnings. “Telephone companies have been under-declaring calls until recently when we acquired machines to see the telephone calls ourselves. This is one of the reasons our tax revenues are the lowest in the region,” he said. Mobile money is 0.5% not 1% Museveni also revealed that the mobile money percentage of transactions taxable is 0.5% not 1% as Finance Minister, Matia Kasaija announced during the budget speech reading. Unlike social media which he says is a “luxury of those enjoying themselves or the malicious”, Museveni noted that mobile money is a useful service but one that needed to be taxed to get businesses in the informal sector to contribute to their country’s development. “Is it too much for users of the mobile money senders and receivers to also make a modest contribution to the development of their country? The 1% was a miscommunication. The actual figure was 0.5%. That is what we should debate, on the mobile money,” the president said.

Taxation I Mobile Money Tax

PEOPLE POWER: Government backtracks on Mobile Money tax BY ALEX TAREMWA

T

he government has heeded to the public pressure and made changes in the mobile money tax excusing deposits from the 1% surcharge. State Minister for Planning, David Bahati made the revelation on Tuesday night after petition led by lawyer Silver Kayondo took to the Constitutional Court challenging the legality of the taxes that took effect on Sunday July 1. “Cabinet has resolved to scrap the 1% tax on mobile money deposits because the it was put in error,” the minister said. Bahati however noted that the tax was to remain on withdrawals, payments using mobile money and social media platforms where the government expects to collect over Shs100billion this financial year. The mobile money tax caused an immediate uproar with civil society, schools and the business community all ganging up on government to remove saying it would widen the poverty gap and hurt financial inclusion. Mobile money users in Uganda rose from 18.8 million in 2016 to over 22 million in 2018 transacting over shs54trillion

annually according to Bank of Uganda statistics. Government ignored warning of telecoms consultant Matooke Republic has also learnt that the government ignored warnings from the

telecoms’ consultant about the dangers mobile money tax would cause to the economy. Senior Economist Prof Augustus Nuwagaba was the lead consultant for both MTN and Airtel Uganda said that he warned the president of the repercussions of the tax but his plea fell on deaf ears. “We had discussions until the very top but they did not hear me out,” the renowned academic said. Nuwagaba further revealed that he persuaded government to tax telecom Escrow accounts to Bank of Uganda and only mobile money withdrawals but government was adamant. “The mobile money tax will only give go ernment Shs115bn yet we gave them an avenue where they could get Shs95bn more and they refused. These people just don’t understand economics,” he added.

“What we want is not a retraction. We want the tax to go entirely ”

Youth unsatisfied with the changes, want whole tax repealed Despite the government retraction, Ugandans are unsatisfied with the changes and want the whole law repealed.

Raymond Mujuni, a journalist and one of the petitioners in the Constitutional Court told Matooke Republic that the government retraction is a realisation by government that the people are against the tax and that if pushed further, the tax will be repealed. “What we want is not a retraction. We want the tax to go entirely and not just the mobile money tax but the Social Media tax too. We are waiting on the court to set a date to hear our case and if we are not satisfied, we shall seek other legal means,” he added. There are however other Ugandans who are not prepared to wait that long. They are raising the required signatures (one third of Parliament) to make the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Rebecca Kadaga reconvene Parliament and have the taxes repealed. Kyadondo MP Robert Kyagulanyi known popularly as Bobi Wine told the media that mobile money and social media taxes are illegal, illegitimate and unfair, giving government until 12pm tomorrow to have repeal the taxes. “We are going to mobilise Ugandans from all over the country and they demand for what is rightfully theirs and I promise you that we will win. An unjust law is no law at all. The youths are the majority in this country and they deserve to be treated with respect,” he said. In company of musicians Dr Hilderman, A Pass, Spice Diana, comedian Salvador and others, the artists said they would use their popularity to get their fans to abandon mobile money, stop buying data bundles until the telecoms have no revenues to collect forcing government to backtrack the taxes.

OTT tax changes the game for online business BY IVAN JUUKO

L

ast week, Uganda celebrated the World Refugee Day at Nakivale Refugee settlement in Isingiro district. The country hosts over 1.4 million refugees from 13 different countries which include; South Sudan, DR Congo, Burundi and Somalia among others. With refugee donations worth $354m (1.3 trillion) from a consortium of donors through United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and other nontraditional donors, refugees in different camps are assured of all basic needs such as food, shelter and medical care. Benard Ewalu is a digital media influencer and blogger who earns a living through promoting company brands on social media. His blog beewol.com is popular but on Monday he could hardly raise 1,ooo hits. Starting on July 1, the new tax on over the top services – call it Social Media tax – had eaten into his workstation rendering him unemployed. The story is the same for other creative artists, bloggers, influencers and online based businesses. Comedian Salvador Idringi told Matooke Republic that the internet is his office. He meets his clients online, gets paid remotely and does the job. “I influence for six different brands on my social media. Do you think my reach is going to be the same as before? People in Parliament, let us wake up and use our heads not our stomachs,” the comedian said. However, the creatives are not just seated. They have hatched plans to survive despite the tax biting deep into their pockets. Not only have they defied the taxes using VPN, they are also using their popularity to urge Ugandans to push for the removal of the taxes. Hannington Bugingo of Fun Factory argued that he will use his platforms to

inform Ugandans of their power and push until the taxes are repealed. “I am not a politician. Some of us detest politics but this is not a political issue. It affects everyone and we need to say no to it in the strongest terms. We cannot allow double taxation. I buy airtime, you tax me. I use the airtime to buy data, you tax me. I use the data so access social media sites and you tax me again? No way,” he said. On Tuesday, Bugingo alongside, Dr Hilderman, Spice Diana, Nubian Li, Bobi Wine, Pablo, blogger Edna Ninsiima, A Pass and Salvador joined lawyers and journalists and gave government up to Friday 12pm to have repealed the social media and mobile money taxes. The creatives have also began to equip themselves with skills to bypass the tax using the dark web, a hidden part of the internet that people access through special browsers such as Tor, I2p and Freenet and VPNs. Resort to physical marketing Some digital marketers have decided to go back to the ‘analog’ way of marketing products. They are saying that they are going move from town to town marketing their products because this is now the only option they have. Neville Igasira, the Chief Marketing

““I am not a politician. Some of us detest politics but this is not a political issue” Officer at Jumia told Matooke Republic that online shop has been greatly affected. “For now we are going to switch to more of the physical marketing as compared to

the digital bit that we have been mostly using due to the changes that have come with the tax,’’ he said. Similarly, the digital marketers are resorting using phone, text messaging to reach out to their potential clients about new products on market. And rather than mobile money payments which also suffered a tax, they will accept cash payments, cheque or bank deposits. For those who have no choice but to pay the tax, they have resolved to increase their prices in order to factor in the taxes. As Pius Enywaru said, “we are likely to hike our fees as well to accommodate these inconveniences and unfair taxation.’’

Barbie also showed us a couple of cottages by the lake shores which she said will provide a near to ‘sleeping on water,’ experience, and also confirmed that plans are underway to erect a conference structure which she hopes will be ready in a few months. wangz Avenue boss and producer Benon Mugmbya is a very happy man of late. For the past few times we have encountered Benon at events, he was always wearing a smile. We were beginning to wonder what’s behind the celebrated producer’s smile when a source let out the secret earlier this week. According to the source, Benon is a happy man after ticking a key box on his list of dreams. A few weeks back, Benon moved into his own house. Apparently Benon had been constructing his new home for the past two years. However, a few weeks back, Benon is said to have entered his new home located along Salama road in Makindye. We were not readily furnished with images of Benon’s new house, but our source told us it’s mega and promised to share images very soon. For now, join us to congratulate Benon upon ticking ‘owning a home’ off his priority boxes! Congrats Benon.

Irene Ntale unshackling herself from the chains The music star is holding a concert this Friday July 7, at Kampala Serena Hotel, a first since she left her label Swangz Avenue

T

his Friday, one of Uganda’s most celebrated songstresses shall be having her first concert outside the wing of her musical alma mater, Swangz Avenue. She came on to the scene as the easy-going girl next door with her husky voice on “Love Letter” and instantly, everyone loved her. Fast forward to 2018, the rest is history as she continues riding on a musical high even when critics had written off her career regarding her departure from Swangz. With just a day to the D day, we find out how her music is fairing this year, how she has fared ever since her divorce with Swangz to how her concert has secretly sold out to prove her maturity to stage a concert at Serena. In an engagement with one of the top deejays in Kampala, DJ Roja, he believes

that Irene Ntale has earned her place as one of the most revered artistes in the land. “I believe every artiste undergoes a hard time leaving a record label in order to start managing their own selves. Not every artiste makes it here. Very many people did not believe she would be here without Swangz, but she is and that is a very big statement.” He went on to add that this particular year she has done very well musically especially with her hit song “Gukuba” dominating the airwaves on both radio and television. He was quick to add that the song could have done better in clubs and attributed its low club presence to its laidback genre and groove. True to Rojas’s word, “Gukuba” is dominating the air waves from radio to television. On popular NBS show, After 5, it was pitted up

against Levixone’s Replay and Ykee Benda’s Kyenkyebula for their weekly Golden song segment and it took the week with 70% of the entire vote. With her music on such a roll, she has definitely earned her right to making Friday worth its salt. Music critic Isaac Ssejjombwe believes that Irene is among the only few acts we have that are talented. He believes that she has done some good songs over the year but he differs from Roja regarding her musical performance this year. He believes that she has not utilised her full potential. He argues that a lot can happen and she needs two more good songs for her to mark this as a good year. However, despite the music being a little bit

slow, he believes that there is no better time for her to hold her concert as it is coming to close to two years since she last had a concert. This is just the time for her to “unchain”. In a phone conversation with Irene Ntale, on how she has made it through ever since the Swangz avenue split, she admitted to things being tough initially. “It was tough in the beginning but I’ve now gotten the hang on things. I’m in a good place right now,” she said. “I have witnessed immense growth within myself and work ethic too.” She added. To her, after working her way up the top, through blood, sweat and tears, this concert means a lot to her career and she wants it to be an everlasting memory for her fans. Tickets are selling out and by Friday morning, Irene confirms that the concert may have sold out already. For Irene Ntale, Friday could just be a beginning to a new era from the shackles of her past. She is Unchained.

Album I Music

Review

Putting Juliana’s Bits and Pieces together TALKING MUSIC WITH TREVOR TAREMWA

A

fter enduring some of the most trying highlights of her life journey in this decade, one would imagine that “Bits and Pieces” is an album that tries to stitch Juliana Kanyomozi’s life jigsaw into one complete piece, but trust the songstress to always surpass your expectations. On her third studio album, Juliana kanyomozi makes one musical celebration as she expresses her versatile artistry that she has perfected over the years with varying themes, and outrightly shocking revelations as we get to experience the various shades of Juliana Kanyomozi on different genres. This album is penned by different writers from different backgrounds, some Ugandan, others not. Some uptown and urban while others, being a blast from the past. It is a musical cocktail and it is indeed, in bits and pieces. The main theme of this album is what Juliana does best- love. When Juliana took over the charts in the early 2000s, it was still love and her love ballad, “Nabikoowa” soon became an instant hit with distressed lovers and even those that pretty much did not know a thing about love. Eight off eleven tracks on this album are all about the love and they cut across the various genres that she experiments with, my favourite being “Nakupenda”, a song which we first saw her do with Nigeria’s Flavor in Coke Studio. It is a remarkable song not only because it is the first song on this album but also because we see Juliana going back to the basics of Juliana being Juliana, singing her heart out to perfection, a reason we probably do not see her having any collaboration. It is an afro soul song written by a gifted Kenyan writer Caroline and if you have been a Juliana fans since the early 2000s, it is bound to bring back nostalgia from her gospel classic, “Kanyimbe”. On this song, there is a rich instrumental blend that cuts across to each and every other song on the album to make this a musical masterpiece as one can easily point out the distinct flutes, the guitar and the piano. The afro soul leaps into her other song, “Omukwano Ogwedda” whose main highlight is the chorus on which she teams up with Naava Grey for an extraterrestrial vocal blend that would give one the illusion of the cherubim as she gets nostalgic about the good old times when love was as sweet as it would get. Juliana does not leave out the uptown urbane and funky audience as she collaborates with Nessim, who is behind the production of “Voodoo”, another sing along love joint on which she is deeply in love that she believes she is under the hypnosis of a spell. She is groovy

and it is a quick reminder of her groovy self on the “Kwekunyakunya” remix. The song is written by A pass and it could have been the influence towards the genre it took. On this love theme, she also does genres such as hard core afro beat on songs such as “Zaabu”, “Twala” (Michael Ouma does take it away on this one with his guitar) and “Wakajanja” which are written by Silver Kyagulanyi and produced by Crouch. When asked what influenced this as a major theme to her album, Juliana pointed out that she is all about spreading positive energies. She also noted that people go through a lot in their life and all they need once in a while is a fresh breath of something positive to make them feel loved. She also cracked a joke about the olden days whereby people would ask her to sing “Nabikoowa” at their weddings even when they were well aware that the song talks about distressed relationships, possibly, another influence of this theme. Other songs have already been released off this album and these include “Right There”, “Woman”, “Twalina Omukwano” and certainly the song whose video stirred hot dust, “I’m Still Here”. However, it is not all roses on this album as certain bits and pieces are of broken glass from her past on one song, “Naliko Omukyala Oyo”. This is a song that preaches against domestic violence that she wrote in 2013 out of a personal experience, but out of fear of coming out, she held onto the song. Fast forward into 2018, she has put this experience out there musically as her own incentive against domestic violence. Juliana reveals that she has been a victim of domestic violence before and she wants to use the ordeal she narrates as her own fight against the vice. Like she puts it, with bits and pieces, we see a different layer to Juliana Kanyomozi as she brings her vast experience on various genres with different writers from different musical heritages to collect these bits into one rich musical experience. This is an album that defines her artistry in the most perfect of ways.

THE NIGERIAN JERSEY

T

hey may have broken hearts on the continent when they failed to make it to the knock-out stages of the World Cup, but at least they left us something fashionable to slay.

What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? Denims. These are not only timeless, but they make for a great casual outfit.

The Super Eagles official jersey by Nike was breaking records, even before the tournament kicked off. The sold out jersey has been seen on numerous fashionistas and celebrities, and you may want to consider getting yourself one.

What is your worst buy ever? I have several of those. It’s those Chinese knock offs that they stock at uptown stores, making us buy them at crazy prices. You wear it and then find 100 other girls around town, in the same thing. Only difference is they got theirs at a bargain.

The green and white tee can be worn over anything casual, from jeans to jogger pants. If you decide to opt for something different, you can accessorise your shirt with a denim skirt, pleated skirt or even a tulle skirt. Add some heels or boots to add some flair to the look.

What styling trick works for you all the time? Jeans,T-shirt, a leather jacket and my stilettos. That look works like magic for me. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Scarves. I really never know what to do with those.

As of May, 2018, this fashion piece was retailing at 40,000 Naira( approximately UGX 427,000), so be ready to spend a pretty penny on it

hile delivering their report regarding tuition increment and student welfare at Makerere University, one of the members on the Student Leaders Committee, a one Obed Samuel made a request to the Makerere University administration following the newly introduced social media tax. Obed suggested that Makerere University should borrow money to improve on the existing university Wi-Fi, a move he thinks will save him and other students that cannot afford the monthly Sh6,000 tax on social media. “At least today I need to bring this to your awareness. I believe you know what is happening with the social media tax which is one of the serious issues to our students. I cannot afford to pay six thousand shillings per month to ensure that I access social media. So I would like to recommend that we improve on the Wi-Fi of Makerere University such that students in all classes

have access to this with immediate effect please. However much you may not have the money at that particular moment, you can borrow from somewhere else,” Obed told Makerere University top administrative leaders including the Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe as well as Council chairperson Dr Charles Wana-Etyem. In his response, Prof Nawangwe told Obed that besides South Africa, Makerere has the best Wi-Fi in Africa but they are working hard to improve on the ser-

vices. “Sam, when you went to Nairobi, I think you realized that we have the best internet services. Makerere has the best internet services aside South Africa,” Nawangwe assured Obed. Improvement of Wi-Fi was among the suggestions Makerere student leaders made to the administration whose general response is expected to come after an emergency council meeting set to be held in a week to come. MUK RELEASES ACCOMMODATION GUIDELINES FOR FRESHERS

T

he office of the Dean of Students Makerere University has released accommodation guidelines for all first-year students of the 2018/2019 academic year. In the document, that is dated June 2018, all undergraduate students shall be attached to a hall of residence as part of their identity. This, however, doesn’t entitle each of them to bed space in halls. The guidelines list a total of 18 courses that have automatic hall residence for government-sponsored students unless the eligible student gives reason to stay out. They include among others, all Engineering courses, all Medical School courses, Agricultural School courses, Veterinary Medicine and Law. The rest of the courses don’t have automatic residence and are subject to available bed space. The document also advises non-resident government-sponsored students to register with the warden’s office at

their respective halls of attachment upon arrival at campus, indicating banks and account numbers to which their accommodation allowances shall always be posted. In the accommodation guidelines, all privately-sponsored students are admit-

ted as non-residents and only those who apply for accommodation space where available and pay for it will become residents. Private students that are interested in the on-campus accommodation are advised to apply for bed space to the Dean of Students in Room 214, Senate Building at the university. The students that were admitted to external programmes are not eligible for full-time accommodation in the halls of residence and therefore need not apply. Change of Halls of attachment is also strictly prohibited except in cases where gender was accidentally mixed up. Campus Bee

Men with beards best for long-term relationships - study Looking to settle? It might be time

to grow a proper beard, as men with full beards are viewed as being more attractive for longterm relationships, according to a study. Fling your thing? No worries. Those with stubble (short, stiff facial hair), on the other hand, are viewed as a better bet among women looking for a short-term affair.

A bearded affair

Men with full beards are viewed as being more attractive for long-term relationships, according to a study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology. Researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia asked 8,520 women to look at a number of photos of men, and provide ratings for physical attractiveness. The images were manipulated so the men ran the full gamut of facial hair-length, from clean-shaven to full beard. Features such as cheekbones and jawlines were also manipulated to make their appearance more or less masculine. Participants in the study rated feminine faces as being less attractive than unmanipulated faces when both were clean-shaven. Faces with extremely masculine or extremely feminine features were judged as being the least attractive. The faces with stubble were rated most attractive overall, particularly for short-term flings, while fully bearded faces were judged as more attractive for long-term relationships. Dr. Barnaby Dixson, lead researcher, writing in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, said: “Our findings suggest that beardedness may be attractive when judging long-term relationships as a signal of intrasexual formidability and the potential to provide direct benefits to females.” Stuff is legit: This research appears to back a 2008 study at Northumbria University that found women to be more attracted to men with stubble than those who spotted clean-shaven faces or full beards.

man will take a girl on a date and immediately think it entitles him to every village on her body. He will immediately complain how you don’t like him because you are not letting him touch your thigh. Oooh you have a very smooth skin. Just a little bit of thigh, Irene. He will not ask you when you might visit him at home. Noooo! He is not from the ancient world. Instead, he will say, “We are going back to my place.” And then to cover his ugly assumptions, he might add a question tag: “We are going back to my place, right?” After you have made him understand that he will not be getting laid tonight (by you) he will immediately lose it. There won’t be any more fun. No more

conversation. He will make sure to tell you how many girls he could get with the money he was spending on the date. He might even leave you in the bar. If you are lucky and he’s got some class, he will drop you at your home. If you are even luckier, he will not gross all over you in the car. You know, pulling your hand to touch his hard wire and all. He will not even face you as you say goodbye. He cannot bear the sight of a girl who just wasted his money on a date. Which means that he will not give you some change for the hangover in the morning. You will have to deep your own pockets for that katogo or energy drink or whatever it is you use to drown the poison. Like you got yourself high. If you wanted to get high on your

own you would have bought yourself a few sachets and not have had to go through the disgusting ordeal. The ordeal of having to play off a sex maniac. Three hours of your life you will never get back. And that is after previous endless chats on WhatsApp. Picture uploads. Voice notes. Video calls. All those MBs of your hard-earned-money gone. Just like that. And all for what? So that a punk can assume that you are a good-to-go lay!? That you don’t deserve the respect of time?! Now tell me, why shouldn’t a girl ask you for cash as soon as you start showing signs of a potential time and money waster? I might be wrong but I think I heard someone say, “Time Is Money”. Judging from how much of women’s time men waste, I think we have got to start billing by the second.

Here is how to beat bloating BY IVAN JUUKO

M

eals are meant to make us feel better as we take them or even after, but sometimes we instead feel the other way with all kinds of discomfort after the meal, for example your stomach feeling twice its normal size, your pants feeling tighter, belching, gasses in the stomach or even sometimes cramps. This is what known as bloating. Bloating is usually just your body’s natural response towards certain foods. While bloating comes unknowingly, you can still avoid facing it and here is how:

Eat slowly

You may have a habit of eating your food very fast but did you know that you swallow a lot of air when you do this, leading to gas retention in the stomach? Taking your time eating will help you to avoid this and it will also reduce your overall food intake.

Limit carbonated drinks

While eating, avoid carbonated water and soda as these build up a lot of carbondioxide in the stomach leading to belching which is one of the more common forms of bloating. Instead of carbonated drinks, always opt for plain mineral water while eating food.

Regulate fatty foods

Do you realize that your stomach always feels like it bursting after a fat-filled meal?

It is always advisable to take a short walk after a heavy meal.

This is because the fats in such a meal take a longer time for your body to process because since they move slowly through the digestive system, which in turn causes bloating.

Opt for less fibre

High fibre foods like whole grains, beans and legumes are always referred as healthier foods however because of their high-fibre content, they can easily cause bloating. However much fibre is an important component of a healthy diet, its intake should be watched by gradually switching from one whole grain to another at a time and seeing how your body reacts.

Take a short walk

It is always advisable to take a short walk after a heavy meal. It could be done by taking the stairs say at your office or simply walking from the eatery back to office. This is one of the simplest methods that one can use to reduce the gas build-up in the stomach which often contributes to bloating.

‘God is everything in our relationship’

O

n Saturday, June 16, Audrey Nabbosa introduced fiancé Moses Kizito at her parents’ home in Buziga. The couple is so God-fearing they actually met during a prayer meeting and grew from friends to lovers. After a year of courtship the two decided to make it official. Audrey’s kwanjula was a very colourful one with very detailed décor and elegant outfits which were all worked on by Suki the Event Destination. Suki and Audrey worked around neutral and bright colours for the décor and bold colours for her outfits. The bride had Rema to sing her some of her favourite love songs as she matched out of the house with her entourage. We wish the couple all the best.

Why breaking the mirror on your wedding is believed to be bad luck A myth that dates back in ancient times when people had just started using mirror, mirrors were believed to have magical powers, which included the power to foresee the future. Thus breaking a mirror would terminate its powers, making the soul would stray from the body and result in misfortunes would being brought upon the one whose reflection it last held.

controversial Crane Bank takeover BY STAFF WRITER

briefing

Team up with big suppliers “There is no way a bigger firm will compete for a bid with all the necessary requirements and be ignored just because they want to give a chance to a local supplier...” Mr Simeon Wanyama, the chairman of the board at Public Procurement and Disposal

C

DC, Britain’s oldest Development Finance Institution is giving up its stake in DFCU Bank following the controversial Crane Bank takeover in January last year. CDC has been a major and the oldest investor in DFCU, having partnered with the Government of Uganda in 1964 to set up DFCU, although it ventured into commercial banking in 2000. According to its website CDC’s investment in DFCU is US$15.1m (equity) and US$10m (subordinated loan). Recent media reports cast the light on how CDC, a British institution was part of the controversial Crane Bank takeover that was termed as “fraudulent” by analysts and as a major shareholder it appears they have succumbed to pressure and given up their interest in DFCU. CDC’s Investment Director in charge of Financial Institutions, Irina Grigorenko, said it was “undertaking a review of its investment in DFCU Limited, which may lead to the disposal or some of some or all of its shares in DFCU over the short to medium term.” “It is our aspiration to exit in a manner that causes minimum disruption to the business and ensures the orderly trading of DFCU’s shares,” Irina wrote in a letter to DFCU’s top management on June 14. Irina added that CDC’s objective is to identify “like-minded investors who could support DFCU in its new phase of growth.” DFCU’s other major shareholder is Arise B.V. of Norway and they are yet to comment on the developments.

No job is too small for anyone. Start with the opportunity given, take pride in the opportunity because you might miss out on the other opportunities that come with that smaller gig. You must have the patience to wait because every experience is something you can add to your CV Legal battles with Crane Bank shareholders

One of the busiest departments in DFCU since the Crane Bank takeover is the legal department as they are entangled in a web of law suits with former Crane Bank shareholders. The Crane Bank sale agreement between Bank of Uganda and DFCU excluded Crane Bank shareholders contrary to the Financial Institutions Act, immediately raising the red flag. The agreement was also “deliberately silent” on the amount DFCU was to pay as a net purchase price and it later turned out that Crane Bank that was valued at Shs1.3 trillion was acquired for Shs200 billion. DFCU management is on record for bragging that they got Crane Bank on the cheap. Revelations later indicated that DFCU took over Crane Bank without paying a cent. DFCU has also been slapped with suits by Crane Management Services and Meera Investments, over Crane Bank property. The companies which are owned by tycoon Sudhir Rupare-

lia a former Crane Bank shareholder filed several suits for trespass and illegal possession of property in regards to 42 former Crane Bank branches that DFCU assumed ownership of. DFCU was also sued for ignoring contractual obligations they inherited from Crane Bank over property the bank they took over was renting. The properties include the former Crane Bank headquarters on Kampala Road where DFCU was slapped with a Shs32 billion suit.

Possible new investors?

CDC said they have held negotiations with possible investors to take over their stake in DFCU. “We have held preliminary discussions with a small number of potential investors” which include Cranemere Africa Limited and responsAbility Investments AG. Cranemere is a holding company for outstanding businesses in the US and Europe. Its shareholders are major families and institutions from the United States, Europe, the United

Strive Masiyiwa

Kingdom, Latin America, and the Middle East. responsAbility Investments AG is private Swiss enterprise founded in 2003. They describe themselves as an asset manager in the field of development investments. The company says its total assets are worth $3bn and has invested in Procredit Group (Germany) at the Chase Bank Kenya Limited (Kenya) and Hattha Kaksekar Limited (Cambodia). The companies are however doing due diligence on DFCU and sources say the controversial Crane Bank take over that has been in the news for over a year now is of keen interest. It should be recalled that DFCU’s profits rose from Shs31 billion to Shs150 billion just three months after taking over Crane Bank. For CDC, it is one way and the way is out as it “may consider alternative exit routes, including a partial or full sale of our stake through a capital markets transaction, if no satisfactory progress can be achieved with the strategic investors.”

Your career is too important for you to outsource

A

young American was visiting Zimbabwe as a backpacker and discovered it was easy to get around because people would give him a “lift” and charge for the ride. He noticed that most people travelled to work using “paid-for lifts.” To an American who spent countless wasted hours stuck in traffic jams, this was revolutionary! He went home and with a colleague decided to launch a “ride sharing” business called Zimride (which was soon acquired by a big car rental company). Thereafter, six years ago he and his partner launched another “shared economy” business called “Lyft” which is now worth an estimated $15bn+. It’s the main competitor to Uber! Another young man wanted to go into the hotel business but he did not have “enough

money” to build hotels. Whilst some would have despaired, he and two friends came up with an ingenious entrepreneurial solution that has helped them build a business more valuable than the biggest hotel groups in the world! That business, of course, is called Airbnb, a concept used in African cities for decades, probably longer. We started talking about this last week. In my own country, people who do not own their own home often rent space in other people’s houses as “lodgers.” Millions of people in Africa find lodgings in this and similar ways. Like Uber, Airbnb (now considered worth some $37bn only 10 years since its founding) could also be an idea born out of Africa! Suddenly I can hear a howl of indignant complaints from the “conspiracy theorists,” but this is not the entrepreneurial way to respond. All it means is that, thanks to technol-

ogy and innovation, there are other similar new opportunities right on our doorstep here at home! The response is for our own young entrepreneurs to study these new pathways to developing businesses, and re-imagine them to digitize things like our “urban lodging system,” and many other similar situations. The person who digitizes urban accommodation in African cities, will be an African Airbnb... Could this be one of you? Look around! What do you “see”?! Come on guys, what do I have to do to wake you up?! Wipe those tears of bitterness off your cheeks simply because you thought you don’t have access to opportunities or capital. Re-imagine the business model, and find other smart ways to get yourself into business. You could be the next Uber or Airbnb! The “shared economy” business model allows you to do smart things with very little

capital. It allows you to leverage limited resources, skills and/or assets. I spoke last week about a guy who developed an App to help people find a free tractor in his agricultural community. Another business facilitates “sharing” of big equipment to construction sites, and yet another enables hospitals to “share” expensive hospital equipment. Cassava Fintech (one of our businesses) developed a business model to help rural people pool their savings using mobile money.

To be continued. . . Strive Masiyiwa is a Zimbabwean businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is the founder and executive chairman of diversified international Telecommunications, Media and Technology group Econet Wireless and Econet Media among other

Mobile bank loans

Here are your options

Perhaps the biggest breakthrough of mobile money has been the ability to give users soft loans instantly asking them for collateral security. MTN MoKash and Airtel’s Wewole allowed users to borrow money from shs5, 000 to over Shs1million. This service has however been adopted by the banks too. Centenary Bank in March 2018 announced that their clients will be able to get loans on their phones instantly without offering security. The loan, if given, is immediately credited to your account and if you use the above mobile banking methods can access it immediately.

M

obile money has grown at an unprecedented rate since 2009 when it was first introduced in Uganda. More than half of the population (about 22 million Ugandans) use the mobile money platforms. However, the platforms are likely to take hit after the government introduced a 1% tax that would affect deposits, withdrawals, payments and receiving money. Don’t despair, though; there are simpler, cheaper and yet convenient ways to move money.

Choose E-Banking

In this digital age, you don’t have to go to the banking hall or ATM booth to access your money. Most commercial banks in Uganda now have mobile apps that allow users to transact on the go. This electronic funds transfer system allows you to send and receive money to or from your account even when you are in separate banks. Apps such as CenteMobile, Equity Eazzy Banking, Stanbic IBTC, DFCU QuickApp, among others all allow users to pay utility and home bills without transferring the money to mobile money first. This way, you can buy airtime, pay for TV subscription, water and Yaka at charges lower than what you would pay using mobile money.

Return to cash payments

you don’t have to go to the banking hall or ATM booth to access your money. Most commercial banks in Uganda now have mobile apps that allow users to transact on the go....

Try Agent Banking

If you don’t have a smartphone to install your bank’s app, you can benefit from the recently introduced Agent Banking system. Agent banking is basically the mobile money of banks. You can deposit, send, withdraw and pay bills, open accounts through an authorised agent of your bank in your neighbourhood. All agents represent banks and should not charge you anything you wouldn’t pay for in the bank.

Bank of Uganda figures indicate that between 75 - 85% retail transactions are performed with cash. Rather than incur double costs sending money to someone in Kisaasi or Kikoni money on the phone and lose more than Shs10, 000 in taxes simply take a taxi of Shs1, 500 physically and hand them the money in cash. The obvious drawback in this is the costs you could end up incurring in terms of transport and time.

Go the Payway route

Payway has been around for a while now, and it has made its name as one of the most accessible options for purchasing airtime, paying for tickets, electricity, and water and other utilities, for only Shs250. There is the

NO TEAM SAFE AS ‘UPSET’ WORLD THE BIG TALKING POINT WITH WILIAM KASOBA

A

s the 2018 Russia World Cup quarter final round kicks off tomorrow, depending on what has happened since its kick-off last month, it will go down in recent history as one of greatest editions not only because of the new VAR technology but also because it has indeed been filled with high drama and major upsets which have made us witness giants being belted. From hosts Russia, who many only expected get out of the group stage at best and join the spectators’ crowd, they are utilising the home advantage to climb heroic heights, as Spain indeed found out. Even before Russia’s heroics, we had already seen small nations overriding traditional powerhouses of world football. Iran narrowly missed out on making it to the next round after failing to kill off its game against now departed Portugal. For Iceland, who can underestimate their improvement in recent years despite having a total population of only 330 000? And let’s not forget how Germany were

well beaten by their Group F opponents including South Korea whose tactical genius delivered a deserved 2-0 win and in the end ensured the world champions were eliminated. In the Round of 16, Japan almost did the unthinkable with an upset against title challengers Belgium on the cards for a long period in their game before the Red Devils hauled themselves up from a twogoal deficit in a match which will have given Belgium coach Roberto Martinez food for thought regarding his current under-utilisation of Kevin De Bruyne in that vastly talented Belgium team. If Martinez can find a way to allow De Bruyne more attacking opportunity, the Red Devils could finally assert themselves in a tournament that continues to refuse to provide us with a clear favourite to lift the trophy. Just be sure of one thing though, the drama looks set to continue with all the finely balanced ties coming up starting tomorrow.

CUP REACHES QUARTER-FINALS FULL TIME ANALYSIS Tiki taka is not dead, but then… Seeing Germany and Spain limp out of this year’s world Cup after each had managed nearly four times more passes than the last opponents they played could have provided fresh ammunition for all the non-believers in the tiki taka philosophy. To write off tiki taka would be premature, however. What is certain though is that tiki taka, as this year’s World Cup just proved, requires a perfection that perhaps no other football philosophy demands. It demands that EVERYONE of a team’s players will be too good to waste or misplace a pass, because that is what put Germany in repeated trouble on the counter. The approach to possess the ball until opponents tire physically and mentally also requires that ultimately there is a special ability within the team to suddenly up the tempo (like a younger Andres Iniesta used to ) or the special ability to not misuse a scoring chance (as a David Villa or Miroslav Klose never used to). Short of that, a tiki-taka team can easily look like an accident waiting to happen, and at this World Cup, two such accidents ended up happening.

Winners don’t always look great In the midst of the hysteria that comes with winning a World Cup, may fans (especially of the winning side) tend to delude themselves that their favourite team was oh-so-great. The evidence from the past tournaments suggests otherwise. Italy played one truly great game en route to winning the 2006 World Cup, while Brazil were solid but never spectacular as they clinched the trophy in 1994. Where could we possibly be headed with this? In Brazil’s direction of course. The Brazilians have quietly gone about their business this World Cup since the scare they suffered in their opening group game against Switzerland, and if you are not too impressed by their football, at least you should be by their solidity. World Cups are not always won by the best team at the tournament, but often by the most solid. Brazil, Uruguay and Croatia would top that table, so take your pick.

AIM TO RESPOND AGAINST KENYA SIMBAS BY WILLIAM KASOBA Saturday, July 7 Kenya Simbas vs Uganda Rugby Cranes, RFUEA Ground

U

ganda Rugby Cranes travelled to Nairobi yesterday on a revenge mission against Kenya Simbas. The 23-man squad that was named to don the Cranes jersey will be itching to respond to Kenya after losing to the same opponents in the first leg of the Elgon Cup. However, this fixture also being Rugby Cranes’ second game in the race for the Rugby Africa Gold Cup in addition to being a World Cup qualifier, the boys must bring their A game if they are to get a reasonable result against their archrivals. Head coach John Duncan is positive his boys will respond following the intense preparation and lessons learnt from the humiliating loss against Namibia last month. “The result we got against Namibia was really disappointing, but we have managed to recover from that with lots of lessons learnt. “We have been putting lots of physical training at high intensity because we need a good result in Kenya. It’s going to be a tough game, but not impossible to get the desired result,” Duncan said. Another positive ahead of the game is that former Cranes vice captain Michael Wokorach is back on the team for the first time this campaign. Wokorach had fallen out with the coaching staff after he was relieved his captaincy duties at the start of this season. Also returning are Philip Wokorach, Ivan Magomu, Martial Chumkam, Ronald Musajjagulanyago and Marvin Odong.
